"This is free talk live. You can join us here. The number six zero three two eight three sixty one sixty six zero three eight three six one six zero. You're just reading through the hit piece. That was released just hours ago by the restaurant critic of the san francisco chronicle just attacking as bad as you know dirty as she can against in and out burger fast food chain. Yeah because they stood up for themselves because they dared to say we don't think our employees should be checking of customers. That's just wanna come. Get a damn french fry and a ham and i tend to agree with that entirely the idea that society is accepting it as normal anywhere in the united states that you have to give your idea if you wanted a big mac or whatever is disturbing and it's happening in so of course it san francisco where the restaurant critic. I'm just gonna read you. Her bio salil hose tenure as the chronicles restaurant critic began in two thousand. Nineteen stomach tenure. She was previously a freelance food and pop culture writer podcast maker and restaurant chef. She also hosts the chronicles food. Podcast extra spicy with columnist. Justin phillips her. Seminal work the racist sandwich. Podcast covered the myriad ways in which food intersects with race class and gender. The racist sandwich podcast. That's who this person is. I have a hard time understanding how food can do any of that. The people making food maybe but like how is like. Oh here's a slice of cheesecake. Oh you're being sexist and racist cheesecake is that blah blah blah i it was used by to oppress african. Certainly right just the damn food and and by the way allow you eat this cheeseburger. You have to learn the full history of how it was used to mistreat native americans in american history. A lot of the Restaurants in places like san francisco have closed indoors. Because they don't want to have to deal like they want to say open but they don't wanna have to you know have their employees enforcing this stuff on customers. They just figured the best way to do. This is to lock the doors and to go drive through. Only because why bother. You can't afford to hire anybody else. The places at a skeleton crew to begin with and so it keeps it simple. We've seen restaurants doing this around here. Yeah just they don't have enough crew. Yeah it's not because they have to enforce anything because they mcdonald's hearing keen closes from what i can tell at least twice a week like just doesn't open during the day at all. Yeah from what. I can just of staffing issues. So yeah it's not like there's a mandate in place. Here there's no crazy vaccine mandate here and it's just there's just not enough people to work so they're they're just said you know what we're going drive through only and that's it in and out burger. I guess they figured they would. Just keep it going and see what happened. And now they got shut down sadly but at least they're standing up for themselves speaking out so kudos i mean it. Sounds like in and out burger was treating their staff. At least decently you know not requiring them to enforce stupid mandates and probably paying them fairly decently so maybe they're staffing issues weren't as bad as they were everywhere else. No they were putting everybody at risk while the woman at the restaurant critic says that they don't care she says in and out Leadership doesn't care about their workers they don't care about you. She says they care about their workers enough to say hey look intervening and stopping. Customer is a really bad idea. Then there's viral videos all over the internet showing people exactly how bad it can go not to mention people have died. You're doing this stuff. I don't need in and out burger to care about me now. I don't spend my food if they heard about. They probably wouldn't be serving you fast food. Let's be honest. They serve fast food. I think it's a given. They don't care about you. So i'll post this this link with when i post the in and out story i'll also post the hit piece by the san francisco chronicle is it's interesting that they chose to do this. They they feel like they felt like they needed to go and strike out against this. This come take the time. This person took the time out of their day to write. This restaurant has closed in the city that this newspaper is printed she. She's almost literally beating a deadly grape dancing. Yeah i'm glad she did it though because it was pretty entertaining. Nothing i i can't imagine any aspect of the racist sandwich. Podcast is going to be interesting but mad just by that name. I'm tempted to check. I wanna know how bad it really is. So lille ho is her name last name. of course it is. She's also probably trans an alcan or something probably so. Let's talk about some other. Good news are you had a story. Apparently about some protests some walkouts happening at hospitals in various different places. i presume. Yeah so it doesn't leadoff saying where it happened but hospitals tax by the pandemic over the last twenty months now have a new problem labor. Strife and a wave of resignations have people waiting longer four. Care exactly why like we said would happen when they introduced these mandates months of marathon shifts and onslaught on slot verbal and even physical abuse from patients and the public. And you've talked about this nikki. Hip and parental complaints over low pay and staffing shortages are stirring unrest at particularly critical. Moment in the pending. Who do you think has it worse. Nurses or fast food workers as far as like bad customer behavior. I don't know we get like. I mean nurses probably have it worse because we're not trying to save lives or anything like that. Yeah yeah we get like legitimate like mentally ill people. That's true is it. Works fast food worker because working in hospitality say customers are worse in the last two years since cova because for whatever reason. They're all uppity. So what's really happening is people are doing more drugs. Basically to cope with the facts that they were put in lockdown and that all this crazy stuff happening cova clown world so we actually had a lot of people relapsing people who work in that started using again because they couldn't go to their aa meetings anymore or they didn't have any of the resources that they were previous at home. They're depressed yes so they're depressed. They're isolated job. So we're seeing a lot of alcoholics coming in a lot of drug overdoses in those people tend to be especially like people withdrawing from alcohol. They tend to they're angry. They're confused agitated so most of the time it they know what doing but when you get a giant man swinging at you. It's not and we predicted that would happen with The relapses here early on. It's like you're gonna lock people up you're gonna force them to stay home. They are going to do things.

"Qb ones. simon he is a guy. I'm definitely in a super flex league. John i'm definitely tried to target and lock up. You know somebody that could be my second quarterback for the next five years or so that he's going to play and if the person who has on this roster really needs a quarterback we have all these buys coming up. You know maybe you can ship over a derek carr Even even kurt cousins. I would ship over her husband's for russell. It depends on on what. You're situations like with your quarterbacks. But i mean if you can get russell at a discount that would definitely be beneficial for your team moving forward. And if i have russell sin. I would go ahead and try to hold him. It's not often someone's willing to patriot. find this true especially aging quarterbacks. It's like everyone wants to young new order. Ever wants to passionate balls. Lamar jackson josh allen. The calamar they want that dual threat quarterback they're not necessarily Kirk cousins or even a russell's. I know he has at toll fat philly he's getting old guy has like thirty years old. I do tend to find especially when it's non suplex. Everyone almost like that can gas zamalek. Yeah you know what. I'd rather go for this young guys like for example i'm the Lands and destined fields own earlier in the super flex. Ar ram seem ranges. fossil wasn't listen a first round quarterback if anything he's probably fog the second and third even super flex show you how people value eads. Yeah and it's really silly like you can get some some valuable quarterbacks et instead of a rookie. That's unreliable like justin field. Was going right next to trevor lawrence is kind of laughable. Now like i don't think anybody thought it was gonna be this bad but holy crap dude. You can't even put ten points. And he's been atrocious. Oh my god but it is laughable that. He goes ahead of a guy like ryan. Tnl their car. Kirk cousins you know. I don't i don't know where if matthew stafford was going ahead of fields or not but yes other there's definitely value could get out of stafford. I'm i'm yes. Biography rounds even to good point. I will you gotta give justin phillips shop because santa weeks ago take was will outperform every rookie quarterback. I apologize to our our listeners. For that tag i was. I don't know what i had for To drink that day. But i don't know some shit with you. Yeah i mean i. I liked him because he looked good in. Preseason he you know. He's a dual threat quarterback. I thought they would figure out a way to use him a little more like a jalen hurts and but they're not either they're using more Appro style dropback quarterback. And it's just not really working that while he has been a little slow on his reids. I don't think alan robinson has performed to expectations. People had for him the season. I think that's had something to do with it. But i don't know i think matt nagy's i i am i on the way out..

"Or anybody in particular who saved through the first two preseason games. They've really flashed. You've loved what you've seen so far well number thirty five number thirty thirty five on both sides of the ball is flash source to be honest with you real happy with that Eighteen eighty four guys satire attention We want to a little bit more out of eighty you know. Unfortunately you know going protocol last week. We didn't get a chance to see him. This week would've loved to have seen him because he's done a really good thing Several the offense alignment. i mean. we've got some really good. Young talented guys have really played well And we wanna to watch watch them some more and they'll play a lot You know we're looking at the The backup depth that at the defensive line when those guys have got to step up so we wanted to watch those guys very closely as well. That was ron rivera. Tommy talking about the players that have impressed him in the first two preseason games and he just started ripping off numbers. Jersey numbers like he was doc walker He didn't do it. Spurrier and get the name all true yell all dr narian mccain. Was it dr narian. Yeah and who is the player. The raiders defensive end that ended up passing away when they signed him. He said well he's not jail Do you know the the Sec network was running. One of the us sad russell. Darrell russell darrell. Russell darrell issa. Exactly there are on the sec network was running this college football one. Fifty hundred fifty years of college football which came out a few years ago and it was called saturday's in the south and it's a five part. Maybe five part four or five six part series on. Just the sec. And it's so great and when they get to the decade of the nineties so much of it is about spurrier and just everybody in the sec. Not just florida gator fans but everybody loved spurrier but anyway For those of you without you know Your game day book. with rosters Without your program with with jersey numbers let me tell you who. He was talking about First of all the thirty five's on offense that would be of course. Jared patterson and on defense that would be the cornerback tori macaire who i'd actually thought played pretty well. The other night is well. Pat patterson was the star of the game and then he mentioned thirty troy app key. I mentioned him on the podcast yesterday. And i mentioned him on the radio show with ben yesterday because i really thought app key looked good on friday night And so he talked about app key and then he was asked to follow up question about abc as well and he said he's really making the adjustment to corner. You can tell like. I think a lot of people that do these 53-man stuff projections. I think a lot of people have been discounting troy app. I wouldn't do that because he is i. Think a ron rivera guy Eighteen is isaiah. right remember him as a punt returner last year. Eighty four is dax milne the receiver and punt returner eighty sam's race. You know the former basketball player who everybody's been raving about and he said about race we need more out of him said the o. Line looks great. Then he was talking about backup depth for the d. line. You know when you're talking about backup depth on a question like that. I think you're talking about their backups. Like their actual backups. Tim settle mad. Ionitsis james smith williams shocked tony. Some of the guys that people have been talking about making the team who knows maybe pointing out some of the other guys including some of the guys that got cut today including justice. read But you know the five four players that they've cut so far they have not Announced their fifth cut. Were sitting here doing the podcast if that comes through i'll tell you in fact just in case you're you don't know the the eighty five down to eighty cut today For the five players cornerback jordan jordan brown offensive. Tackle rick leonard. Linebacker justin phillips and defensive tackle justice read. I don't know who the fifth will be but anyway You know maybe he's looking for more out of their backup de lyman. Which would include saddling ionitsis. Itis you know we we keep talking about the d. Line strength of the football team the deepest part of the football team potentially so maybe he's looking for more at i settle. I dismissed time right. Tommy i'm you mean. He had the cove yet. Yeah yeah but i mean. He was their best defensive line to. I night healthy. I know you believe that while. Because it's true he was really good. He's really strong. He's really strong. I one of the trainers on the team. Who i know Told me last. Year i and itis in kerrigan or the two strongest people on the team and it's not that close in terms of just pure brute strength so And that that's one of the reasons he had success. God i wanna. I wanna healthy man. I just from from two years ago to i mean that would be awesome to have them in there I think the Looked the roster is gonna take shape. We're a week away from the cut. Down to fifty three mentioned. Yesterday this will be the best fifty three man roster this Teams had an a long long time. I mentioned the two thousand team. I actually look this up earlier today. in in two thousand. That's the last time. Tommy washington had any significant preseason expectations. They don't have great preseason expectations this year either Let me just point that out. But the last time it's been twenty one years since washington went into a season with really high expectations odds wise. I went back to pro. football reference. Washington was the second pick in the entire. Nfl to win the super bowl. The rams were the favorites at plus three hundred. Washington was the second favourite plus three fifty in the highest over under number on wins that before the season started washington at eleven and a half. And that was it. you know. Now it's you know twenty the twenty one years at a followed They've never been anywhere close to being picked to be a contender for the super bowl. Well that wasn't even the glory days. I mean that. Was you know nine years. After the glory days ended. I mean we see jumping season right. That was seen the glory days. The promise of two thousand the promise of two thousand coming off in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine Impressive playoff run And with all the high priced Free agents that they got there were tremendous promised that year. You know. I've said this so many times in some of you disagree with me which is fine I as you know a lifelong fan and an observer of this football team. I won't i won't call myself an astute observer but i'll just say an observer of this team. I don't remember in two thousand in dan snyder's first full year of being the owner in terms of having a first full offseason. 'cause ninety nine. He became the owner officially after everything had already been done for the ninety.

"This is all things considered. I'm Audie Cornish, and I'm Elsa Chang. It has been a crushing year for restaurants, pizza shops, burger joints to Korea's There's so many places have had to close indoor dining for large stretches of the year, relying on take out and outdoor patios to stay afloat. But here in California, even outdoor dining isn't an option in some places as Corona virus cases continue to spiral out of control. SAN Francisco Chronicle Food writer Justin Phillips is worried not only about the fate of the restaurant industry but also about the future of black owned restaurants in the Bay Area places that made him feel just a little more at home there. Justine Phillips. Welcome. Thanks for having me. So you wrote about all of this in the Chronicle and you start off by describing what it feels like to be inside one of your favorite spots, the second half Sports lounge. Can you just paint a picture for me? Like what Would it be like to step inside that place? It was almost like stumbling into a house party like a house party filled with the coolest people. You may not know them, but they would treat you like you were their best friend. You mix that experience with barbecue with colorful cocktails with a lot of laughter with sports played on the TV when you left, you could feel that experience like in your bones the next day. Well, you wrote that you feel like the Bay Area can quote be an easy place to feel lost in especially When you're black, and you aren't seeing many black people. Can you talk about that? Some more like how did you first feel? When you landed in the Bay Area? You know, I quickly realized as a black person that moves out here, you have to put in extra work to be able to build. Community just because you know there aren't many of us here, and I think that was kind of exacerbated with me being in the food world, and they're being being even fewer black people. So then how important were these restaurants these restaurants owned and operated by black people. How important were they in your life in the Bay Area to help? Sort of fill that void, right? There was significant because you're black person looking to build community with black people out here. That's where you're gonna be able to find them. So it's kind of like gathering places. And you kind of like, quickly expand your network because you could meet one person who'll be like you should be my friend. You know, he might be a barber or you should be my friend. He makes smoothies at his house and cells from his neighborhood. For me. It became my anchor like restaurants became the anchor for me out here. I love that. Well, I'm also curious what it was like during the racial justice protests when ah, lot of these restaurants were still able to continue serving at least outdoors. Did it feel like that community that you're describing Evolved A little. Yeah, everyone was talking about trying to support black owned businesses. It wasn't just going out to eat and felt like, you know, like a political act for a lot of white people, But I talked to a lot of business owners who said that their customer base that always been the same for a long time. But once the George Floyd protest started, they started seeing like a lot of diversity, and it wasn't just people swinging by to do take out orders like they would reach out email. The business of Salas do and say they lived here by those spaces became places where people really connected and Scott, it was really unique to see. But after a while, that is started to wane, and that's kind of why I wrote this piece. Lot of these places. You worry that pretty soon it's going to be it. So if some of them don't survive, what is your fear of what would happen to black culture in the Bay Area? Well after the pandemic is over. I just have this feeling that it might be erased a little bit in the bear. If you already don't see many black people. And then on top of that, you don't see the places where they hang out. You don't see their culture represented at a Jamaican restaurant or something like that. You start to lose the connection with that community, and I just worry that people won't see black culture in a region where you know they really should be able to see it. Some more like how did you first feel when you landed in the Bay Area? You know, I quickly realized as a black person that moves out here, You have to put in extra work to be able to build community just because you know there aren't many of us here. And I think that was kind of exacerbated with me being in the food world, and they're being being even fewer black people. So then how important were these restaurants these restaurants owned and operated by black people? How important were they? In your life in the Bay Area to help sort of fill that void, right? There was significant because if you're a black person looking to build community with black people out here, that's where you're gonna be able to find them. So it's kind of like gathering places. And you kind of like, quickly expand your network because you could meet one person who'll be like he should be my friend. You know, he might be a barber or you should be my friend. He makes Smoothies at his house and cells from his neighborhood. For me, it became my anchor like restaurants became the anchor for me out here. I love that. Well, I am also curious what it was like during the racial justice protests when A lot of these restaurants were still able to continue serving at least outdoors. Did it feel like that community that you're describing evolved a little? Yeah, everyone was talking about trying to support black owned businesses. It wasn't just going out to eat. I felt like, you know, like a political act for a lot of white people. But I talked to a lot of business owners who said that their customer base that always been the same for a long time. But once the George Floyd protest started, they started seeing like a lot of diversity. And it wasn't just people swinging by to do take out orders like they would reach out email the business of Seattle's do and say they live nearby. Those spaces became places where people really connected. It was it was really unique to see. But after a while, that is started to wane, and that's kind of why I wrote this piece. Lot of these places or worry that pretty soon it's going to be it so if some of them don't survive, what is your fear of what would happen to black culture in the Bay Area? Well after the pandemic is over. I just have this feeling that it might be erased a little bit in the bear. If you already don't see many black people. And then on top of that, You don't see the places where they hang out. You don't see their culture represented at a Jamaican restaurant or something like that. You start to lose the connection with that community, and I just worry that people won't see black culture. In a region where you know they really should be able to see it. "Who knows what it's going to be? Two Thousand and twenty after Decade of displacement right so twenty eight percent of the population is black. Seventy percent of the homeless population is Black Brat be investigated like why is that Mari Research has shown you know everything from access to opportunities from jobs to food housing affordability displacement that you know really began in earnest well I won't say began ernest accelerated in earnest in two thousand eight during the housing crisis. We have to be able to look at that approach a statistic like that and say okay. Okay this is racially. It's racially impacting the city, and you cannot address the issue without looking at the racial component that that's been my point since I joined the chronicle and I. think that's what you do so well. Is You take those Let me just blow a little smoke. those statistical things and you turn two stories that we relate to so I am thinking. Just stuff the top of my head. You did a story probably a couple months ago now about a family who had A. Shoe, repair business and how they had to close. You know it was a big family depending on income from this business, and you read that story and you re these are not statistics. These are people who are really suffering who are out of work who can't do a thing that they've been able to do to support their families, and even so we're probably living paycheck to paycheck or could have been and I think that's the real gift of good journalism. Journalism, good storytelling and good local journalism. Because that's the point I want to make to is that if you're listening and you're not subscribing to your local news source, you've got to wonder. Who else do you think is GonNa look into the problems of specific aspects of homelessness in your community for instance or specific decisions, being made in your city, government and I think of not just Otis's work, but Heather Knight who writes for the Chronicle and I swear. Swear she's. She has the best blood. How knows for figuring out whereas their dysfunction in San Francisco city government and sniffing it out and figuring it out and driving real change at a at a macro level, because they're good at telling the stories of what the impact is at the micro level, the other day you and Yulon to James, did a beautiful photo journalism piece that showed photos of Bay area black folks who are out protesting and talking to them. Them about why they're protesting. And it was just it was so moving. It was so beautifully done, and it's a thing that I worry about what how are we? GonNa Cover these stories locally when the newspapers continue to consolidate I, wonder if you have thoughts about the changing landscape, and and what people can do to support local press. You know to support that kind of storytelling of of your own neighbors wherever you are listening to to me right now. Yeah, you know Nancy I. Don't have any good ideas beside asking people to support local journalism. Because think of like this, we're also your neighbors, so the stories that were tracking down in the stories that we're writing stories that we're reporting. It impacts us and you and without that Kinda without that watch dog. Public officials tend to not do what's in the best interest of the broader community. Hence, we're having now discussions about how cities, counties and states, and even the whole country have treated non white community for decades centuries now, and that's because you know we have existed in the system that hasn't favored equity and. and Equality Now I know that that shoe repair shop that are wrote about that. You mentioned that was something that spoke to me. Because know I live in the neighborhood that is really overly white, but the shoe repair shop. Was You know one of the few businesses owned by a person of color? And here we are you know not in week into the pandemic and they're already struggling. Why is that? Why is that? Why is it that this business applies for P. P. and they get? They got something like sixteen hundred dollars, but you know the Los Angeles. Lakers got several million. Why is that? Why are we helping out this professional franchise that selling all sorts of merchandise and you know we're not helping the neighborhood shoe cobbler, those are questions that journalists are presenting with the goal at least for my coverage to push for more equitable society in, but throughout the country. You know we have what we call news. Desert's where there isn't the local journals you know. Newspapers of shutdown publications are they're shrinking? That's what they're doing and. And I. That's going to have a term impact on communities where people live, because when information is not betted when information is not challenge, then politicians are allowed to set an agenda that they want because no one is watching. No one is questioning now until it's too late until decisions have ordered been made, it's hard to reverse, and then it's the communities that field in and also there is a segment of the population and I. I speak from experience because my inbox is full of that segment right now, who don't want to acknowledge what the protests are for. They want only focus on violence, the destruction people who are not connected to this move and have no knowledge, and who are so far removed that they have no understanding of what systemic racism the havoc it has wreaked on this country they want to turn the protest into something they're. They're not I mean if we're today is what June tenth. If we turn on Fox News now, you're still seeing. Images used a protest from May Twenty, eighth and May twenty ninth. Why is that? It's because so many in this country. Do not want to acknowledge what is happening right now. It is problematic. It's upsetting the balance this upsetting order that we all lived under without acknowledging how order disenfranchised non white communities in this country. And I think what you're seeing in media right now is a reckoning. Several editors have lost their jobs because they thrived under a system that didn't want to include perspective of other journalists didn't want to include. From people who were coming from communities that had been on the outside in this country, and now we're seeing that publications who do not have journalists of color are really feeling the brunt of that, but even publications like the San Francisco Chronicle that has a few, not enough a few. Journalists of color are seeing the impact of that my colleague. Justin Phillips was covering alleged looting in Emoryville and police stopped him and they didn't believe he was a journalist. It's not enough to have a badge that shows you are a journalist. Because police are not accustomed to see journalists of color, it's the same way that people are racially profiled by police. Generals are also be while monthly. That's another problem that I think media companies are having to reckon with as well right. You've been at the chronicle since two thousand sixteen, and before we started recording, we were talking about Kapernick. And you know different a an earlier protest that didn't. Didn't catch fire the way this one has so I'm wondering. Does this moment in time feel different to you from inside? The newsroom will why? because. You know in recent column I went back and in time and various uprisings and fifty three years ago during the nineteen sixty seven race riots, where one hundred and fifty cities in the country had uprisings, and there was destruction and burning of property, and the federal government commissioned a report called the Kerner Commission I. I'm telling you it's gonna be a fun one and it's gonna be a great time to to watch the game but I I'm just open the raiders have you know during core focus into where he understands get rid of the ball because once you can get it to where you can challenge to their secondary a little bit more then I think you're you're okay you're staying away from this right not that they're secondaries we because it's not there defense is solid but as long as we can somewhat neutralized Khalil Mack because you know if he gets a sack early it is going to set the tone for the rest of that bear defense to where they're going to say all is is it baby this is Khalil he's waiting for this it's a coming out party he's taking it out on the silver black your take Sean on that one.

"I won't hit on a couple of. Do you have anything else you wanted to say about. The deck deck zeke zeke jalen well. I think i moved on to that. I just think that to kind of finish where we started about the let jalen smith have his day okay because he certainly you know. I just don't think there are too many stories in the n._f._l. That are better than than that and i guess the best way to illustrate how far ariz come with the contract extension that he got today is to go back and look and i reached out to some general managers and head coaches at the time time. The cowboys picked him to see what their thought process was on him and here's three that i wanted to share from from a g._m. In the n._f._c. on jalen smith after the cowboys took in the second round. I would've considered the sixth round. It's fifty fifty ever plays again a head coach. We consider it. We would have considered him in the fourth round. He'll oh play again but the level of play completely unpredictable and another g._m. This one from an a._f._c. team said we wouldn't have ever considered him. That's what what we pay our doctors for so they have off their board and now he's one of the dominant young linebackers and football okay and what was that team doctor. Do you want to throw that <unk> out there. I do think ed today. I would have had dr dan cooper up at the podium i would've put him on the on the day up there and bring the trainer who worked worked extensively. Gotta shout. I liked that second like a second father to me is what jalen said back to talk to heard from some of the medical staff earlier and i think they felt they felt really good about how that was presented but i would've extended both of those guys brit in in dr in dr cooper i would i i would also given them disclosure clauses. They're not allowed to smack to the media cherry dot getting contracts nondisclosure. I think you could get those those numbers. I'd like to get a look at brit brown's contract. I hope he got an extension but <hes> i. I think everybody in the organization. This is one of those deals we beat. You're you're right to bring this this up by the way because we beat them up on some of these risks that don't work out. You know we're still waiting to see gregory's had some really good moments. We don't know exactly how that story's going to end and some of the risks they've taken over the years a sean lee. It's been up and down. I think overall you would say that was worth the risk for the kind of career he's had for the cowboys but that one's been up and down but for a second round pick. I think you're okay. They've had some that just <hes> they they. They just went by the wayside. Is you know whether it be drug suspend david irving now of course they didn't give much on him but they've had some guys that just signed him off kansas city's i think you're right and then they had relondo mclean. That was still not a bad deal. They gave up six or seven man. If you don't mind all the embarrassments of you know getting suspended and all that happens yeah. I think they might have to the purple drank or whatever whatever it was. He might have burned down his own home. We don't know we don't know what would all went on you on. We're gonna talk about some guys yes. Yes and i'm glad you went back though because i wanted to give jalen smith i so what i did the other night. I don't know if you've read to some press box d._f._w. I in fact i put it up on our <hes> doomsday. Pay facebook page and we really like our community community. There are a lot of people access through the facebook page and i write these long. How many exact harlem's what do you mean thousands thousands of people yeah and i think so especially these <hes> especially the pro-peace columns. I'll do like a thousand words on the preseason game. There are a couple of young guys. I wanted to mention i like i like the guy we talked to. His college coaches college a position coach the defensive coordinator at u._c._f. At the time tristan hill has shown only a few things. I know he's kinda raw and i don't think he's going to be it'll be a little bit like taco. I hope hope he plays better earlier in his career than taco geico as but i like how he's blowing up plays in kind of you know he'll do some spin moves. He'll do some interesting things in the other guy by the way that is taking over right right now. I'm talking about tristan hill of course with that but maliki collins this me collins nine third round. Pick out of nebraska believe what a monster monster this guy. Is you think maliki out there looking for his contractor sure he's probably one of the next few guys to get it. I would say that in talking to the coaches and watching thing the games in the practices the two guys who stand out to me are jordan lewis and anthony brown the two slot corner about that and that it could be slot corner. There could be important because byron jones. We don't know what does that. Setback hip surgery they kinda thought he'd practices weakened can and unlike demarcus lawrence and tyrone crawford. He was not on the field. Today was not been activated off the pup like those two guys were <hes> they practice on a limited basis but we don't know how far away byron jones but they i think they feel like anthony brown could bump outside and play as an outside starting corner corner if byron doesn't make it back but you'll want to feel good about four corners in today's game and they really only have three of byron's part of it yeah. I think you're right in a couple no more players i want to mention big ninety five love seeing the big boy the big man covington christian covington he was i mean he just was he norm now. He's he came from a different team. <hes> he had been with somebody else they brought him in. I think he's going to maliki antoine woods. He's he's going to add to that depth. They got beat up at the line of scrimmage by the rams divisional playoff game. I liked covington. I mean he talked about a big old monster and then you bring in kerry hyder who had eight and a half sacks that season for detroit. He's the former texas tech defensive lineman texas tech known for having some quick undersized defensive defensive lineman. He's fast hyder makes highest hands raise a._m. Today for his contributions it's hustle his knowledge of the scheme being in great shape relentlessly pursuing the ball making plays on the ball so he's a guy that's really impressed them in have at the hawaiian <hes> the trip and in that number forty four oklahoma state's justin phillips. Did you like that. No look interception. That's pretty good. My gosh just kind kind of upper reaches up there and snags at ball he my understanding is he did not fulfill play so it was one of those i play but how about playing within the scheme and being where you're supposed to be because there was a guy opened behind you that was supposed to be your responsibility. I don't know which that happens. Sometimes i i mean the the lack of takeaways team has a lack of interceptions. I'll go ahead and let justin phillips have that mistake. I mean that's a good ball but at at the same time you've got to coach the point that hey you had an assignment that you need to honor because more times than not it's going to i think justin phillips earned the right to freelance apps. Also what about my man a luma. How about that guy kit. His word is his kit in practice is kip. He's got he wears a long blue bright royal blue sleeves and royal blue leg. He looks like he's richard. Sherman out there you know always the body but he really stands out to form a standpoint yeah. That's nice. I'd like i like the way you put decks for bloomberg or somebody is named donovan whose donovan donovan wilson. I like a loom bus much. There's a guy from a._d._m. That hits the people. I haven't seen him lately. I just a lot of people who really really stop talking or no. I it's fine. It's fine now the guy they gotta help. They gotta help this poor. Who is who who is number sixty five. That's the guy i'd like to help that poor tackle. Did you see it left tackle. Oh my goodness. He was getting blown up. It's not campo. It's another another campos sixty three number sixty five you gotta get him off the offensive line you gotta send him. Oh from clemson hyatt big high. Oh my gosh getting exposed. He's guy really been disappointed by because they really thought they had something and you know they haven't had. A mcgovern hasn't been out practicing practicing yet so that's an issue tyron. Smith is practicing on a limited basis zack. Martin has a bad back. You know the last thing that can happen to the team for him to not have elliott and then have some of the offensive line issues that they had last year. I think the thing that really got overlooked. Last year was ezekiel. Elliott led the the n._f._l. In rushing by huge margin even though three of their offensive lineman missed significant playing and i mean travis frederick miss the whole year but tyron smith miss three games martin miss games for the first time in his career he missed two and yet zeke elliott still led the league in rushing yeah yeah and and one more i wanted to mention a good point by you devon smith number fifteen former second round pick by the jets and whilst who would ever know that the jets could get away but he did have to a._c._l.'s and so that was a big reason why it just didn't work out but the boy if he could stay healthy the quickness the speed about that throw to from cooper rush. I know you have been very tough on cooper rush but i thought cooper rush great timing on the throw and <hes> devin smith snags that thing in the corner of the end zone on j. lo i happen to arrive it. His media gathering a little bit late today <hes> after practice but he was was praising devon smith and even said something like he can moscow is like he can go over the top is and bring it down like randy moss and and i verify that that was a mossy recycling on that saint panama's a winston moss or some of these other mosses he was talking about randy moss so if he has any randy moss characteristics as far as it pertains to performing on the field that would be good thing. Keep talking. I'm thinking more mosses. I think there's a tony. Moss was pretty good. I came the three i know no. I know i was just sitting here thinking but you made me wish them all. She used to play at line university of texas. Linebacker green bay didn't wait. What's the most places in texas winston. Moss played for university of texas. Oh keep going you get in trouble. At some point. You've got your own green bay last year for some something he tweeted at air rogers by the old that winded and moss yet fired as a linebackers coach up there. There's shortly thereafter okay. There's an was after mike mccarthy had fired. There's there's an <music> old u._t. Player name moss and that's who i was kinda thinking you're talking about kind of modern day winston moss this those are good things poor john vay johnson. You're gonna have to put him on the practice. Squad demand is just not consistent enough. A muff punt reggie davis the muffed punt the you know you're always looking for these receiver phenoms. They have not been consistent assistant enough. I don't think either one of those guys will make the team. I guess they'll save a spot for noah. I mean he's been held tied in. He got an versatility see that kind of distinguished himself from the rest of the receivers in a way that could certainly benefit them especially given all the injuries. They haven't tight end right now. Yeah him included boy. I can tell you always zaven for the doomsday podcast..

His media gathering a little bit late today <hes> after practice but he was was praising devon smith and even said something like he can moscow is like he can go over the top is and bring it down like randy moss and and i verified that that was a mossy recycling on that saint panama's a winston moss or some of these other mosses he was talking about randy moss so if he has any randy moss characteristics as far as it pertains to performing on the field that would be good thing. Keep talking. I'm thinking of more losses. I think there's a tony moss was pretty good. I came the three i know no. I know i was just sitting here thinking but you made me wish them all. She used to play at line university of texas. Linebacker green bay didn't wait. What's what's the most places in texas winston. Yeah him included black and tell you always even for the doomsday podcast. You had great information but for some reason in these past couple of weeks you even have more information what's happening on a regular real quick ed. Give give us the cowley look at frito just taking copious notes. I don't know what he's trying to tell me but there's been sixteen losses in the n._f._l. There's it's been four moseley's white. There's been more than that. They'll call the moseleys here one two three four five six so sir over eight nine ten muslim c._j. Moseley now he's he's a good player. I'm looking at border now. That'll be done great soccer player named order. There's no orders orders now. Hey while bremen or law fredo and you continue to do this real quick. Give us the because people kind of want to know our doomsday and they can you you know you've read it in the new york daily news and other new york daily news and other places other tabloids but <hes> yeah that's right but what what what exactly happened it i mean this is kind of a a rare territory for someone to get laid off. I wouldn't call it acrimonious because you did handle it. I thought you you handle it well but but you came back after your your time away was finally came to fruition. It's like okay. Ed can go take a job somewhere else you basically we're being paid not to work somewhere else and then at the end of your time it comes to an end. You're also going to be a free agent and e._s._p._n. Hires you back ed. How how did this happen with some sort of disdain. No no no. I mean it's an interest janka. They make such a big process so <hes> w- what happened was i tried to stay relevant by doing this show by doing westwood one by being prolific on social media in a way that aggravates you and i succeeded on all three levels but i guess i met a lot so i met a lot of people at super bowls and so forth in recent years interviewed with them but ultimately with like a year left on my deal with e._s._p._n. When they change presidents i reached out to people there and said look. I've got a year left before i can go wherever i want to go or you know with anybody who will have me <hes> and work for them but i really like to know what interests there is if any from my first choice e._s._p._n. That's kind of where i always felt i belonged and and fortunately they were receptive to that idea. I went up there in december and met or they shocked at all like when they heard that were they surprised prize them that after the way it ended and the the weird nature of all those layoffs were they did they <hes>. Did it surprise them that to hear from you. I i think it surprised them because they were i mean i worked there for twenty years. A lot of people who are there lifelong friends and so between i by maintaining those friendships and then seeing people at games i- coverage for westwood one or at super bowls and playoff games interact with a lot of those people they have a new president and you know i don't. I don't think it was jimmy jimmy taro. The president. Now wasn't the guy who let let me go. Let the other people go. I think i i look at it like i'm the only one i believe of the hundred people who got let go who so far has been brought back on a full-time basis and there are other people who are equally deserving so i feel very fortunate that to get that second opportunity and i mean it's like i i stepped right in and it was like i never left from the standpoint of ahmat cowboys camp. I'm covering the same people. I've always covered on working in the field with the same producers and same cruise. I was working with two years ago and i'm taking and throwing to the same anchors on the sportscenter desk and the n._f._l. Desk as i did two years ago so it's like nothing changed and that was kind of a good feeling yeah. No it is good feeling you don't want it to feel completely foreign to you at all kind of came back to you and the only thing has changed as your chevrolet years older too but i got the feeling that when when the anchor like it started with hannah storm and then subsequently absolutely throughout the day i think i always had relationship every seemed a lot of enthusiasm by my colleagues on the air and i appreciated to that and it's very nice did at any point in the negotiations. Did you say no. I mean that that is nice at any point. Did you say i'm only coming back. If i can bring mosele usually with me did that did that come up. We didn't get that far goodness human negotiations before they said yes. You thought that might be a little little much breaker so i had stayed away from it. Maybe in the next contract next i don't. I don't think anyone's aware of your interest your interest now. I'm not really i mean but i am with e._s._p._n. It's just it's different affiliate yeah down hill country central texas. You can listen to me daily on e._s._p._n. The in central texas ed goodstuff. Glad glad you're back good stuff free donation productions always good to be out here studios little warm in your today but other other than that thought green screen. He has done a great job that green screen really looks good which we would utilize it at some point great to be here in back on with doomsday uh-huh day podcast special edition jalen smith with the cowboys until two thousand special editions..
