Yeah isn't a loss of pastor the movie where a car explodes but they just wrote car explosion fx on the screen and good stuff a micro budget to it was made for basic eighty thousand dollars. "You think that people are being turned into pumpkin monsters. When the pumpkin monsters would be just as effective if they didn't try to convince you that they were turning people into pumpkin monsters. Eating people chosen. If you just an captured by the alpha pumpkin. What of what of your garments would they take to put on jack o lantern to make us think. Oh fuck just now jackal winter. Yeah i hawaii's would be the one my woodworking out wearing say it's a mackel lantern we've got to get your guys a flop house listener. I've made i would say not. Infrequent situation is me listening to the podcast with little to no familiarity of the film that you are describing but i am listening to this discussion as both a view of the civil mana listener and this has got to be one of the ones. That sounds gotta be way up there on like seward insane these things. Yeah as if like you know the alpha. Pumpkin has been transforming them in. The velma is in the mind palace shaggy and their consciousness for it is indescribable. Yeah well the pause. The movie to be like i gotta write some sentences hearing it described back to me like really has sort of undone. Like a lodestone of like scooby doo in general where. I'm just like okay. Wait hold why does the villain me to convince everyone else that something supernatural. You never been adequately answered in. Fifty years of scooby doo productions. It's the i think what i it's. It's basically just a means to get these incredibly charismatic characters. Shaggy hippy do a cowardly dolly alma. A smart nerd. Daphne a blank a sociopath whose masked hides nothing behind it and fred. Who's kind of you know a a lumbering lung head with a sweater on get those guys in action and traps. It's and hope that they eventually run into the three stooges. Or perhaps sonny and cher or tim conway or someone else. That you'd see on tv in the nineteen seventies. It's because you see you see the character select screen. You'd see fred and you'd be like he's a bruiser he's just going to go in there he's gonna hit big but he's going to be slow but you wouldn't expect him to be a trap character but whatever man you know it's cool. Sometimes games changed funny thing like this old celebrity ski because you have the same sensation. Like when you're watching old muppet. Show where you're like. I guess this person was popular. One point they aren't like sometimes you get a mark hamill then. Sometimes you get someone. You're like okay. They were a dancer along with elvira. They ll in late in the almost. The end reference a celebrity crossover literally. No child enjoy or appreciate. There's a phyllis diller nod absolutely bizarre so reason to think that a child would enjoy. So what would the. What would be the modern day equivalent. If scooby doo was doing with celebrities now they did that would be like i. Don't know who are they. Teaming up with judge judy or the teaming jenner partisans like who would it be. I actually have an answer for this. Because they The current series. At least the most recent series. It's is called. Scooby doo and guess who Which is each episode is with a new celebrity so Just recently we have The premiere episode was nba. Basketball legend. chris paul okay. And then there's the ghost. Of abraham lincoln is in the next one and that's also doesn't seem real guest star to say they may not a pretty big game and the excitement if it says ghost of abraham lincoln himself in the credits. Then yes. that's a huge get. This is the year so we've got the next. One is wanda sykes your home and then it's ricky surveys and tell her to be atheist ricky surveys ass himself. It's gotta be guys. I'm gonna tell you the the i'm just trying to tell you that it's than wonder woman can intel. Our from family matters late. But it's urkel or jalil white. No it's okay weird al and Sia i love. This is good. Scooby doo mystery gain. They're like the man thing in the marvel comics. Who's the guardian of the nexus of all realities. Could pop out of our burien howard. The duck the. Scooby doo gang can meet anybody any reality at any point in time. That's pretty that one. One week they're hanging out with jordan peterson and the next week. It's them and it's them and justin bieber and the next week it's them and rick moranis. These are just all canadian people on. I'm losing it over here guys because then we've got what's described as comedy rocker. Keenan thompson are your whoopie. Goldberg men steamed take a real quick smith dance spots over the.

"To convince elvira to take her on as a protege and drive away in the new mystery machine acts and now it's a driving movie. Yeah i like the rest of the. It's you keep remembering like wait. This car chases still going on. And the fury road of scooby doo. They have their whole conversations with one another from one vehicle. I wish i just the beginning of the movie zipped along a lot more for me honestly this long car chase because at a certain point l. You mean the forty five minutes of them. Driving didn't zip along the way you. I'm like get out of the car guy. Yeah it's like. They didn't write any movie. They're driving very slowly to the end of the movement. I can't imagine them just the movie ending with him. Driving off into the sunset forever chased by these jack-o-lanterns never getting out of the cards. That's funny you should mention that because the jack-o-lanterns are hot on their tail with their own custom. Hot rods that i think are built out of the parade. Floats can't yes. Yeah look like that. It's a real. It's a real monster garage special edition where they took the take. These floats and tournament too. Cool monster trucks. And they're like we can do that. Oh the customer was a bunch of jack-o-lanterns but we decided we're still going to do as good a job as we can. Hey we need this part. Well we have to get that from japan a jack-o-lanterns this is gonna take awhile of chasing these teens. Okay we'll do as best as we can. We didn't have a lot of time. So a monster garage guys had to get on it. Sure sure sure. Those tools elliott. This shows a greater familiarity with monster garage than i expected out of. You watch a lot of monster. Garage monster house was never as much into. There's something about having a crazy. Themed car that i can understand but when theme your house around something it really like. Yeah not gonna wanna live inside of a dinosaur cave every day and that's coming from me a guy who wishes he could live in a dinosaur cave like three days out of the week but there was a there was a monster house where it was like the baby's coming. We decided to make his room underwater. Themed third sharks everywhere and fish. And i was like ooh. I hope this kid likes underwater stuff because this is going to be a bad room. He doesn't like it. Did that without my daughter. My first daughter. We made her Room space themed Almost as soon as she could talk she informed me how much she hated the safety. And how much she wished it was princesses. And so i had to have this sad montage of me like taking the rocket ships down on the wall and pilot ours. The stupid doctor who just off the starry curtains straight in the trash for like scraping the stars off the ceiling. Wow i did exactly that. Can we take a brief diversion to just check in matthew lillard. Quick i and this is celebrate tori. I am not ragging on him whatsoever. Because i'm envious in a way two thousand and two. Matthew lillard plays the role of shaggy rogers in the movie. Scooby doo and then you know what this is. Good for me. I'm just gonna stay here if that's all right and everybody can go about their business. I'm just chill here. Except for appearing in twin peaks to return briefly. i'm gonna dip. you're on david lynch's returned to television. I'm just gonna keep that other stuff. Yeah it's other stuff. But the fact that he just like even the last movie had will forte as shaggy and there like certainly matthews not gonna come back after that is it. No it's fine. I'll just sit back and like all not big. But like big for scooby doo internet controversy. With all like everyone's like why are they kidding will forte. Matthew lillard has been playing. This part since two doesn't work. I mean he's great and kate. Makuuchi is is so. She's so good as velma that she hasn't always been velma and it's like it. It's not perfect but i just think it's fascinating massey. Lower like those good. i'll just keep doing. It is pretty easy and get money for it and it's fun to keep being this guy. I don't think we have a lot like unless you want to look like a brat i wanner one of the mickey lineage. Like you don't have this level of interconnectedness between a character and a voice actor that goes on for years and years and years and years and years as wild. That's all it's always. Whenever they would have like a guest star on the simpsons character would become like a fairly regular or recurring character. Like i imagine. I always think it's weird that joe montana like still goes in and they're like yeah. Yeah a fat. Tony's and this can you come in record three lines. Yeah sure okay. Yeah why not. Okay but i always thought weird then of four matthew. Casey kasem did most. And i always thought it was weird that casey kasem had like head his own big career but he was still for years. The same thing coming into and shaggy is it. Just maybe really great to be shaggy like so joyful life. This might be a crazy question. But why wasn't casey kasem in the live. Action movie shady. Well i mean one. By that point he was either a very old man or dead. I can't remember with the action. The live part would have been challenging. Look at casey kasem How how alive. He was when that movie came out. Let's see i don't judge me okay. Okay so you're did ask if it was crazy ahead of time. So that's true so he voiced norville shaggy rogers from nineteen sixty nine to nineteen ninety-seven then again from two thousand to two thousand nine says So in two thousand two he was seventy years old so it might have been a little strange if it was like these young people playing the rest. The character isn't that a seventy year old man and if anything what's weird about it. Is that shaggy. So mu- so clearly take off of maynard g. Krebs from the dobie gillis show because they're basically the dobie gillis characters. Why didn't they just get bob denver to do it. I don't know look. I'm not hannah or barra. I can't answer these. I mean the answer's probably the bombed ever too much money. But i i. I don't know we'll have to go into the until. I guess an oral history somewhere to find out It's also worth noting that case case of did voice shaggy rogers in the year of his death thousand fourteen so that was a seventy to get judging from wikipedia..

"We have our next celebrity cameo bill nye shows up and he organized an airdrop for eighteen. Receive a new fancy mystery machine. Mcnally cabs again. I think this is a strange thing. Because at one point Bill nye was sort of a figure for children. But but at this point in the history. I think he's mostly known for like appearing on cnn and sort of like throwing his hands up at the fact that no one believes in science anymore but that is what is fascinating about. It is that that is what if this movie is about anything. But yeah that is what this movie is about. Is about velma struggling with the limits of science and belief and then where those two and the the overlap of fear and science belief. The perfect a perfect guy. I wish they didn't dissects if i'm so much 'cause you know i mean. He does want to see him as a sexy at one point. I thought sexiest sexier So the new mystery machine is like a cool automated. Like robo car has shortly. So you're you're issue with their handling of bill. Nye is similar to dan's handling with the issue of elvira character who is just radiating sexuality and is known for that has been neutered for child audience. Bill nye largely appears in the movie as the a hologram their car. And you think it's an a bill nye but it's not that because he's interrupted by trick or treaters one of them is just like aqua man who he then complains about the the the unbelievable character which it's real it's real nice building is just sitting there hologram in the van all for livestreaming direct to their van hologram. And here's the thing we live in a world. Where now in this show where scarecrows real meaning batman israel aqua man bill nye has a lot of issues with how aquaman could exist which implies either one command is not real in this strange. Dc hanna-barbera hybrid were to bill. Nye is always writing letters to the note. Local newspaper saying is a hoax. And i can prove the science doesn't make sense. Here's my seven minute. Youtube video on how acclamations not real fake news fake news and i just don't want to believe that bill nye is is harassing aquaman that way i also think the justin brings up a good point which is like like the fact that he is not an ai. And he's built this for the mystery inc Teens like is he committed himself to always sitting there in that chair. Like helping them and being like you know mean depends like there's times in our life where we just kind of want out really enjoy our longest since connections as opposed to the people didn't our nearest that maybe us too. Well sometimes it's better to work in a relationship where there's a little bit of extra people with a bunch of teams. Yeah i mean. That's totally normal right. I mean weird. It would be weird or if bill nye was just roaming the country with a bunch of teens in a van solving mysteries right. That would be more quietly. that's it. He's like. He knows that there needs to be distance. Helped him out well and he. And also he. And daphne us to date and here So tired of hitting a jacket lander so shaggy sets on it and then it turns into a monster. Pumpkin and bites him on the button. He says look. I've got a pumpkin but The reporters and various people are being attacked. By jack-o-lanterns a jewish coded reporter gets eaten by giant jack lantern and then gets turned into a jack of lantern The ground starts to be torn apart riven by earthquakes. Shaggy and scooby jump into Station wagon with mike and michelle. Daphne manages.

"A brady bunch. Movie style like sort of It usually writing this line between parody and earnestness. And i feel like this movie really doesn't lean as ho it's funny of its own creation right it. What it does is. It makes choices for each of these characters. That is not necessarily referencing. Scooby doo from forty years ago but has rather like it's making choices that let them be funny so in this one. Daphne is very strange. I mean data is the is the oddball of of group and fred is funny. Not because he's referencing. What a you know. lovable Do yeah but like he's funny for other reasons because he is his own care. There's not a meta commentary on fred of your yields like when we were watching this. Oh daphne gets to be funny in this. Because usually daphne i think is the biggest blank in it. They're just like okay like well. She and fred both was just like okay. These are like are pretty leaders. But i don't really know who they are and she's she's What like affected like she has. Hills is the physical one i read to. You can make traps in these apps. Credit kept talking about traps. And i was like was that always his thing. Did i forget that fred's thing was traps. Because i thought his thing was just being like the guy who could walk into a normal like establishment situation and have like some kind of face that is trusted as opposed to shaggy who is clearly a drought from society was just kind of like the guy who would go anywhere. They can trust me. I'm worrying ascott. it's okay it is definitely one of those things where it's like back to the future to situation where it's like wait was marty's thing before that he doesn't like being called a chicken because i don't remember now he had. Fred has one of the best One of my favorite. Fred lines is he says. I want to do what i do best. I'm gonna do. Track survey decided to celebrate by going trick or treating. They talk about how they don't have Costumes which is weird. Spread is wearing like a half skeleton casting. I mean he's wearing the costume from karate. Kid that those kids were wearing on halloween. He just that skeleton constanta. So shaggy and scooby of course chew mouthfuls of candy spit it all over themselves and cover themselves with extra candy and become spilled halloween. Candy's their costume. It's wild and then they have a trick or treating and dancing montage to original song. I'm assuming created this movie There's a few times in the movie where i think it's about to become a musical. And then it doesn't quite become a musical like they faint at it and the characters sing a little bit and then it just kind of goes away and you're like okay. I kind of thought you do like a whole number here. But then find a wreck drown and a rep toxic waste truck and the two things combined to smear their juice all over a local pumpkin patch which the pumpkins and do monitors which are here to four known as jackal winterbourne's now. why didn't they call them. Jackal lanterns. They're not scavengers jack. They don't have any anything. Like jackals like jack o lantern. Was there a look kind of like critters that are also zombies and they can fly and drive custom hot rods and they laughed. They've got a very gremlin e laugh. Although i guess it's a critters. He laughed unlike unlike guli. They don't get you in the end. Well actually the later on. But are they like munchies. I don't really remember what the to do. Well they look up. Women stresses based on the vhs Post about transfers transfers like this law man transfers are completely different involved Jumping to different dimensions. Jacked app is involved. It's great so the rest of the gang spares racist and that nineteen seventies way. Okay okay what about. What about big box. So while shaggy scooby. You're watching the jack-o-lanterns origin story. The rest of the team needs the local sheriff in threatens them and and takes away the scarecrow obviously in case for de-fund they meet locals he if any if any criminal seems to be an imminent danger. That should be locked up at the moment. It seems to be the scarecrow. I'm not talking about the way that they're handling the scarecrow. I'm just talking about the general sheriff's overreach his ways interacting with these helpful teenagers. We meet a local Father daughter team mike and michelle. Mike thanks also family father team. They picked up saving down and offered by all karakoram corn later on museum rabbits. Your ended chekhov's caramel corn purchase. Offer if you if you promise the purchase of caramel cornyn act one by act three. We better see that karma corn get purchased. Dooby show up. They try and warn the local reporters who were very excited about saving the town that the town is in fact. Not saying there are of chapa lanterns on their way. Nobody believes them. 'cause they're covering candy and there's an owl stuck on his. But daphne then sings a an original song that is very kind of shrew. Consciousness elliott kaelin quality. My notes let me read you from notes. Daphne sings a real elliott style song. So i appreciated that part. I felt like. I feel like i felt seeing happy halloween scooby to now. We have our next celebrity cameo bill nye shows up and he organized an airdrop for eighteen. Receive a new fancy mystery machine. Mcnally cabs again. I think.

"Crossing over with marvel comics and their jack lantern villain not wrong comics universe. Friends as you're about to find out or i mean. This is the green goblin through pumpkin bombs. But it doesn't have a jack lantern on his head. But jack lantern uses a lot of green goblins old stuff. Green goblin left a lot of his weapons. All over new york because one. He's a pack rat and to just in case. I guess he was in the nave. He needed to switch costumes. And so hob goblin. Jacka lantern dima goblin. They're all always borrowing green levels old stuff. You know okay. Well it scarecrow scarecrow and you watch that you think when i i watched this i thought. Oh this is batman. Crossover nope near just you know. He's like don't just want to be a batman guy. I want to be a little bit of everything ninety percent of the time. I'm watching the movie with audrey. And ninety percent of the time she loses interest almost immediately but she was on her edge of her seat for this one. Because she's a big. Scooby doo fan from way back She actually convinced me to watch scuba outback. But but but she said oh. it's the scarecrow. Thought she was just joking for a while. Because i missed the fact that you're like oh. I got them but no it's actually yes. Actually dr crane not frazier crane. But what if wait a minute hold on. What is green was the scarecrows brother. Hold on second. There's a third train brother. He's not in seattle in gotham. And he's the scarecrow. I got to see it happen. Okay to attack him with a bunch of drones and then fred us a phone app that is not a trap to turn them off and then they shoot him with a crossbow. Now here's the thing. I like about this right off. The bat is now. I have to assume that batman. And scooby doo coexist in the same universe. Which i love. Because i've been having some real issues with batman lately as i come to realize that he is essentially a character who uses violence to solve a mental illness problem and that his entire series is that is a long running argument against Empathy for anyone who commits a crime and in favor of just throwing them into an easily as capable asylum. Here scooby doo exists in that world. Then all bets are off. You know what maybe batmans the right way to handle. This world's is nuts. If there's just a top dog who's also pothead. Who solves mysteries with madonna families than like okay. Sure maybe batman makes sense. So there's a couple of turnarounds. It looks like scarecrows. Deadman's switch is going to launch a huge new batch of drones and then Shaggy picks up scooby and use them like an anti-aircraft gun and he spits candy. That is still fully wrapped out of his mouth. Yeah and shoots down all of the drones. They terrified they locked the doors to the mystery van not allowing us to get back in and yeah they've just been swallowing a bunch of a fully wrapped candy for the last for the credit sequence. Easier to animate yes. yeah now. here's a. I wanted to bring up so as always it. Looks like as scooby doo. It looks like it's a supernatural thing at some guy with pumpkin powers. No it's just drones and stuff. Were you guys as kids ever as disappointed as i was that every episode of scooby doo ended with the reassuring. Message that monsters and ghosts don't exist and it's just old men who don't want people to go to their amusement parks for some reason it's minor i mean schoo- breaks that traditional tradition. There is actual lake supernatural stuff going on. And it's my understanding that like some of the more recent scooby doo versions have had actual supermodel stuff going fully up on scooby dues modern continuity which is why one of the characters in this really threw me off when it turned out he was a continuing character. I mean i understand like scooby doo addict. General i understand having affection for it in the way that i understand having fiction for any old garbage from your childhood. Let's let's stipulate that the original cartoons were very good I mean they've done. I think they have done some better versions of it over the years. So i hear but you know i don't like it is wild to some degree that this is you know. Scooby doo has been in syndication from the one thousand. Nine hundred eighty s different versions. He is the longest running television cartoon character that there is like his. His show's been on the air in some form or another basically without with few break since the early seventies late sixties and life considering his main think about his main thing that i can think of is like this kind of shit brown color palette that is hideously unappealing. There's no there's nothing visually appealing about the show and also that every episode ends with them being like. Oh a monster psych kids. There's no magic in the world is just an old man in a mask but this this one really turned around for me partly because it's a very colorful. Chad is much more prettier looking version. I was actually going to say. I feel like the animation was a little bit jet like hurricane jerky and not particularly appealing to me. But then i don't watch a lot of commission for kids. how about you. Daddy's out there. It would say middle of the pack. I mean it's not it's it's serviceable. It's certainly better than a lot of the animation you see on on television is A lot fewer frames of much less animation. I and that. I would say that like for me. Like the limited cel. Animation was like the animation itself was not good but i liked the like the brightness of the designs so they you know they say the day they start to celebrate The the cop. Show up to take scarecrow way Vilma has some verbal sparring with Scarecrow and he gives them a mysterious threat. Daphne used a whole bunch of outdated slang Behavior she's drunk white wine spritzers. I've found that whole sequence surprisingly. But at the same time i was like. Who is daphne supposed to be here. Like what is her personality is. Here's what i like about this. What i really like other than the fact well. I'll talk about a lot of things like one of the things i enjoy about. This film is that. I feel like one of the things that has put me off of scooby doo to this point. I feel like scooby. Doo has been meta- at this point longer than it has been. Scooby doo right. Almost all of our scooby doo media is like a running gag about how she like a brady bunch. Movie style like sort of It usually writing this line between parody and earnestness..
Bring on the snack cake cereal
"Welcome to the Empty Bowl might name is Justin mcelroy and I am a serial enthusiast. My name is Dan Gilbert and I am a serial ethnographer in the sense that I know the cereal culture in the overall breakfast. Zeitgeist well enough to understand the impact of some of the stories we're about to talk about today. that's. So exciting we have so much going on this first news story Dan. I have to tell you. I'm thrilled over here over on this end. I mean it's huge. It's absolutely. Substantial. So. When you write about serial for five years I have inevitably you end up seeing some of the same things again and again, and one of the easiest things to do when you're reading about serial is to tell the world about the weirdly specific cereals that you've always wanted to see on shelves and for me Besides gingerbread toast crunch I think the second most idea of cereal I've ever had would be a little. OATMEAL, cream pies cereal, and now we must wait no more as Kellogg's has partnered with the snack brand to bring oatmeal cream pie cereal two shelves later this year. What's IT GONNA look like? So so from appearance alone, it doesn't necessarily look like the sort of sandwiched cream, an oatmeal cookie. Snack cake that you're familiar with It looks more like a brown oatmeal ring cereal, which is fine. I'm not really in this for appearances so much as the legacy of the snack taking question. You say, what did you say that the cream pie is your favorite little w product It's up there with cosmic Brownie alum that plastic chocolate on a on a cosmic Brownie I used to get star crunches a lot when I was a kid in my lunch bag but I don't like those so I don't know why I felt the need to tell you that but. You know it the for me. I'd say it's a three way tie between the oatmeal Cream Pie the double decker oatmeal cream pies. Distinct feast and the fudge around, which is essentially just a chocolate oatmeal cream by but overall I, think the oatmeal cream pies and amazing snack product. It's probably my go-to whenever I am Matt a gas station stopped long road trip. So I'm very very excited to see it come serial form. Especially, it's going to be a thin line to walk to get that exact flavor because as I, discovered recently. Raisins are in the battle of the bill cream pie. It's sink. Yes. Yes. Yes. Raisins in the OATMEAL cream. Pie. So that's why like you get that like is what gives it its distinct flavor is that there's raisins mixed into into the batter period into the better so. That will be a tricky flavor to to nail. Think I'm really hoping that mine is not the only mind that you've blown with this revelation right here because I did not know that at all I mean. meanwhile, I was just hoping that this is an actual oath based serial rather than some some sort of corn contraption because I think it'd be really an authentic otherwise but. I think my favorite thing about the story overall is how you just know that someone at Kellogg's saw post team up with hostess to drop the sort of twinkies, etcetera cereals, and immediately thought. Get Little Debbie on the horn. We're not going to stand for this sort of force that cooperation to happen. Yeah, it's funny that you mentioned cosmic brownies actually because when the story first broke before, it became official from Kellogg's themselves There was a youtube video of someone reviewing the little debbie cereal or oatmeal cream pies cereal before anyone knew about it and they were also reviewing cosmic Brownie cereal. It was weird because they had the box for Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies cereal but they didn't have any official box art for the cosmic brownies cereal and the stuff really kinda looked like the cocoa puffs Brownie crunch that rerelease not too long ago. So it's very uncertain. The legitimacy of this cosmic Brownie cereal because after the news officially dropped I reached OCTA Kellogg's my contact there and ask them about this and all I could tell me in the Vegas. Possible terms was that a cosmic brownies Syria was not releasing at this time. The seems like a tacit confirmation that cosmic Brownie Syria was at least considered whether it will actually be released or not or if it was scrapped entirely remains uncertain but the point remains that we're entering a brave new world of snack cakes, cereals and I'm all here for it.

And that's it man I. Miss the movie as that's the movie cobb a good flick. So great I feel like. As, you said it's not quite a cult hit. I think that's fair I. Think it has a bigger impact on people I still don't feel. It's like I feel like it could be a lot more well. Known Herald is like one of the greats like it is. It deserves to be in the same breath as pretty much every other comedy classic, but I feel like did never made like the American impact that that you know a lot of the movies said it's on some lists in England is like a top twenty all time film from England and stuff like that. It's definitely. Has Its do as a cult. Hit in certain circles, though it ain't easy to watch either I mean like. Thank goodness for criterion. Making do with with like. Bad. VHS And DVD transfers of this movie. Since we started watching it, there is if you went to to try to buy this right now. I think you're going to pay like. A hundred dollars. Really DVD of is like impossible to to find. Yeah, well, check it out and criterion I got a question for you to. Do. You say chin-chin when toast? Okay. This is interesting. I'm while it's so funny that you say that my wife and I wanted to start saying it We couldn't figure out if it was racist or not. Oh. Many, because there's so many things sneak up on every. If you have not wondered if something is racist, it probably. and. Tension is racist. Thing we google and Google and Google could not find it, but couldn't find enough. That said is definitely not. One of those weird things like the origin is not super super clear. We have not found definitive evidence that it is, but it was still we're nervous. Enough People that we just have. A prost. Now I boy prost a super racist. Hanging kidding. I I didn't know if this was the origin or not, or if that was a common. Usage tricalm. I've heard other British. People say no. It's from from this movie, but I never knew I've had certainly had plenty of friends that set it over the years. And I always think it's a nice little shorthand for. Being it's sort of like being in Little Club like if you love this movie. Yeah Yeah it says a lot about who you definitely will put it on the map if it was not the. Originator of it. It's definitely what made more common, totally all right dude. You got anything else on with nail. If not, we'll finish with the quick five questions. Wrap it up all right dude What was the first movie you saw in a theater? Be Thinking. I am trying to I you know that offhand but it. Pretty sure et. Okay. That's that. Is The guy first movie? Let me see that come out. Let me double. Check my memory there. That was eighty two as long as movies stayed in theaters. Then that is possible all right? Yes, I'M GONNA! Go to et okay. what? Was Your first are rated movie. Well that's funny that we've covered my first home. Already movie was sleep away camp part. Didn't know if you watched it. Didn't get through it. So I guess we will, we will give it to t t okay. We'll give the honor fully completing. Yeah, because you don't watch ten minutes of a movie from between your fingers. At. that. People do. Let me, see number three. I'm trying to find my list because I don't do these as much anymore Right here it is. Number three and people listeners are like dumbing. You know you're fucking. Questions Were you walk out of a bad movie or do you stick it out? I have walked out of one movie. Beverly Hills. Ninja all three about to say cob. No Beverly Hills Ninja. I walked out of Barley St-. Yeah Yeah. Yeah Beverly Hills and then. Walked out of, but that is the only that the fine large know. Nowadays like so absolutely rare, not nowadays in the credit hours Thomas but since I've had kids. It's rare that I'll like be able to get to go to a movie theater that I would probably just. Show static I don't care. I'm with you well and. I talk about this. A lot with other parents is like you, don't you? Don't take fliers on bad movies anymore. You go when you know it's a great movie. I. I saw the last time I went to the movie theater. I I saw someone looking at posters, and then talking with someone about what to go see and I almost had like like. Are you serious? You just showed up like what starting to people. That's the thing I've heard. Other would've luxury. That must be cheese. You're either. Independently wealthy all right here. It's very sad planned two weeks of planning built my schedule around. Number four used to ask guilty pleasure, but now more akin to ask. If could be. Or how about this? If you and your brothers could be in any classic comedy? What movie would that be?.

"Richard Grant is so great in this. It's his first movie and it's just like. I mean to cut to. For this to be your first role. Is just like revelatory. It's just. Reform Konak. It's so yeah. It's comic the Trying to think of the other, you're talking about It's like Greenland in here. where did you get super? He's eating offi Witherspoon. So we mentioned Uncle Monty and I did want to talk about that because it is an interesting mean talk about things you don't realize. As. Tastes and awareness of things continue to evolve. We see there's a big plot point that and basically the. What you come to learn is that Monte is gay, and it is very heavily implied that with now has promised that. If he lets them use his cabin that. I. Who's apparently as googling I found out named Peter I'm going to prefer to speeders. That's much Marwood another I think in the script. He's Marwood Marwood Yeah Peter would and Peters. Is also secretly gay, and would you know have a romp with right? and. There is a an basically this time period. It much more closeted much more Tabar. Uncle Monty comes who's Richard Griffiths who you'll know as. Mr Durr XLII Harry Potter is adopted. Dan He's great in the NFL uncle. The and he's fantastic, and there's a scene where uncle Monty well. He has come to the cottage and he is helping them to. Get a little bit more settled. He's been very kindly, but also kind of obviously has designs on Peter and there's a scene where. Against Peters wishes. Uncle, monty comes upstairs and basically like. Attempts to force himself on. To Peter and it is. Like a very, it's a very troubling scene. It's a very disturbing scene. Yeah, To play like a horror movie host it is, it is but it. And obviously I'm a straight guy. I, my read on this may be completely wrong. This is just as I've watched it. Repeatedly in different lenses gotten older, my most recent take on it like. In lesser movie. It would be a comedy a lesser movie it would be. I mean an lesser movie from like now you know like this time period the idea of A. closeted. Gay Dude attempting to. You know. have his way with. A Straight guy it's like from wedding crashers. Vince Vaughn seen. Yeah, okay, good. Yeah, that's a really good comparison. But this movie I think both through like direction and writing, but also through Richard Griffiths performances, absolutely like astonishingly in the he is out of control good. He imbues it with a sadness. And the desperation of somebody who basically lived a lie his entire life. Is just now. You know realizing that that's not gonna be his life And Monte is not given a chance to where we're not seeing him forgiven in terms of the movie. We don't see him. He doesn't like. Make it up to anybody, but the movie doesn't also try to excuse his behavior. He just disappears from the movie at this point. Yeah, but it's really like. It feels more like a commentary. Maybe this is overly generous again, but if feels more like a commentary on what society did to gay people at that point by making them hide their existence, I think it totally was I mean this was set in nineteen, sixty nine and the character. Monty is in his sixties easy so this is a gay man in England who grew up. From the turn of the century where it was literally illegal, and you could be chemically castrated. in that letter that he leaves the next day when he's out of there is just so sad and tragic. You know. Yeah, it's very. It's very sad. Fun Trivia for you. Richard Griffiths say more credit to his force. He's forty years old. When this movie was shut up. Really Yeah, yeah, forty when on yeah. While may awhile yeah, I mean. That's the read though he does. He is not meant to read. It's a forty year old. His I don't think so. And here's another bit of Trivia. I don't know if you knew but The the writer director Bruce Robinson base that character on. Zefferelli because he has a young, very handsome actor, was in Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet and apparently was. Very much hit on income onto by Zefferelli He thought inappropriately a much older man, and even took some of the lines directly from Zefferelli like. Are you a sponge stone? Apparently was something. Zefferelli actually said to him, wow. Yeah, it's IT'S A. It's tough I mean I. Don't know how. A smarter person or a person would would feel about watching that scene. That is just sort of my read on it, yeah! It's a very it's. It's but but I mean I think it definitely feels progressive in terms of the the mid to late eighties. Yeah, you know he is not sort of like other D-, or to be a monster because of his. Sexual orientation it is because of the. Attempted assault. Of Peter, but yeah, and that's sort of three line through the movie. You know there's a couple of times where there's the one time in the bar earlier on in the pub when the guy him ponts. Calls Marwick upon, and he's just terrified of getting beat up and I think I think he with Naylor are. It seems like they're constantly being mistaken for a gay couple, yeah? And actually seeing it again. And having not seen it in a while I couldn't really remember. I kind of thought. They were a gay couple and then it sort of jog my memory as a movie along they.

"It seems like this great amazing like K., one off character and then I was reading something about Wayne's world. It's like this is. A character called Danny, who is a drug dealer in a movie called with the on I, and it's not like it's similar. It is the same character guy named something different in a completely unrelated. Cinematic universe it is so strange, but yes, the Danny and this was also filmed a good. Fifteen is ten fifteen years before Wayne's world so like it's just the same guy again in in the movie which I'm sure like Mike Myers saw that movie and was like Hey, can you just or somebody that movie and it was like? Hey, can you just do this again? If you could just do that character, I should've named him. Danny and so good little Easter egg that I'm sure you probably know about is alien three. Did you know about this? I don't think all right so alien three was ventures run at alien, and he wanted a reunion of the cast, and he couldn't get Richard E. Grant, but Paul mcgann and Richard Griffiths. I'm sorry. An Ralph Brown who played Danny are both in alien three and Richard E grant turned it down and he was. It was also another Omar. that. I. Mean they call it a cult film, but it's more than that. It's sort of this cultural touchstone to so many. English people for sure but even Americans and other filmmakers and writers. It's okay, so things I like without getting getting morning. Trivia 'cause. It's like. Things I like about with now on I'm are my wife and I watched it as a result of this and. Talk about like a movie that you can like. VIBE on to you like it fee. It has such. A distinct vibe this movie that is, it feels weird. It feels out of time sort of its maybe fill in the mid eighties set in at the very end of the sixties. And it doesn't even feel like the late sixties that much. No, it's well. It's very low budget, so there's not like a lot of life. Set Decoration, and stuff like that that that that they've done to make it feel it. You know of a period, it. It is very subdued. There's not a lot going on in it. Yeah, From from a from a story perspective like there's not much plot, it's about two. Unemployed actors that go on holiday by mistake made. That is literally the entire bit. And there's a story to be told is just very much about the. vibe that that of their of the world that they are ad. It's bizarre. Yeah, in what hit me. watching this last night was at first of all I. saw this in college when I worked at the cool video store that had all the Kalindi movies I. Then I've seen it twice since before last night. each time with one of my good friends from England one of my oldest friends from college. Still One of my best friends Justin we watched it together and then when I lived in La, I had a very good for name guy. Four guard and it was one of his favorite movies and we watched it together. But watching it last night. It really hit me of what A. What a Corny hokey movie! This could have been. LIKE TWO UNEMPLOYED ACTORS GO ON A. Mistaken vacation to the English countryside and Tzaneen US ensues, which is exactly what happens, but nothing about this. That's Hokey your corny so real. Well. It's very. It's like if you look at these, so these guys start off in. Absolutely deplorable circumstances swiftly all his like overly dramatic and cruel and cowardly. And crappy. And then there's I. He doesn't get named WHO's Paul. mcgann was the eighth doctor and the this them living in deplorable circumstances, there drugged out of their minds. They are living in like it feels claustrophobic. It's so fully realized that like you feel like I. Want you guys to get out to? The seems miserable. Yeah? But when they go to their to this that one of their friends. With nail has an uncle, Monty, who has a house in the countryside's to them. Go there. And like. From the moment they get there, it's so ground. It's like the whole movie's like this, but like like for example when they show up at the college they don't have. Fire. They bring anything to start a fire. Where Food Avenue they have no food. They don't have boots, so they are have wrapped their feet and plastic to protect from the weather and it's like. That is not something that a comedy like this normally concern itself with, but those small, even the small details like that. Their desperation and ineptitude like each thing become feels momentus they at one point, are at a bar and they see a poacher. Has Takes has it. Heals band take. His pants that he wax the head of the yield on the bar till it dies, and then he puts the eel down his pants, and then they come over, and there's a scene of them like trying to talk him out of giving them the yield. Down his pants, and like every seat is like that of like these very small, Banal circumstances, being elevated just by their like absolute ineptitude at navigating. Life. I think like a lot of great comedies. It is also undercut. With a real sadness, yeah! Time that. It is very much about the end of this. Era. It is very much about the end of the sixties and like. The reckoning that would come. It is very much about the hang the I think they even talk about like. How the seventies are going to be a massive hangover from the sixties, and that is very much what you see buildings like as they're driving onto the countryside. There's a shot two buildings being demolished time It's all very gray in washed out and like it feels that way feels like their eulogizing the the sixties in a sense like and these guys. are a kind of got caught at the end of the Party and they're they're. A couple the last guy still there and there's a real like sadness about the whole thing that I think actually makes it work better than it would without. Oh, absolutely and you know seeing this movie in My twenties and thirties which was. I think the last time I saw. This was when I was in L. A. Probably Fifteen sixteen years ago. And then seeing it here at forty nine. I had the this wave wash over me where I was like. Oh my God. With nail is a desperate alcoholic. Yeah! And that is the sadness. I think seeing it through older is. It's very funny in the alcohol is played as a as a gag so much through the movie. But when you see, it isn't is a grown adult like this. You can't help but think oh my God. This guy's GonNa Die Young of liver.

I think the big evolution's in four our for me. There's two things one. You still got the sort of like us you're grappling hook to fly up in the air, and then hit the parachute to keep floating. And then use your wing suit to get extra distance your wing suit. Now has rockets on it. So you can just sorta shut pack around like, and it also shoots like missiles out of it. Great shirt went up. I don't know where he's hiding those. But find so that's that's very cool and fun. The other big thing is the grappling hook now has like. Discreet, load outs, which are comprised of there's like balloons, the you can get to lift things there are boosters which provide, you know, thrust. And there are there's a retract her that'll pull two things together. So you can customize a load out that like if I hit something with my grappling hook and attached to something else it'll pull them together. But then if I press up than it'll fire boosters and shoot it in the sky, and if I hold up, then it'll trigger balloons that will lifted in the sky, and then as you play through you unlock new upgrades for those like, you can make your balloons explosive or you can make it. So your boosters will fire horizontalising throw like ten of those on a car and do nothing except explode. Basically, I did have one on like I'm gonna I'm gonna hit this ramp with my thing. And I basically just my car started spinning wildly like a cheap. Firework purchase the fourth of July spinning around and then eventually exploiting Gill. But the the mission stuff is just like I- y'all had had to put a game in there. I guess I feel like one of these days they're going to figure out a way to capitalize on those wild mechanics that that are that make sense with the game. But this is this is not that time. No yet. I am. I. I so much enjoyed what you any other macaroni brothers have been doing since you guys parted ways with polygon. Tell me more about some of the stuff that you're doing with FOX though, we just launched a MAC the macaroni family, which is McElroy dot family. It is a site that we made sort of in partnership with FOX, and it is. Sort of finally like a website where we can put all of our johnke that my family makes got links to like buy stuff and our books and video series that we make podcasts and make and all that good stuff one of those video series. Of course being monster factory, which is part of this this partnership that we're bringing back monster factory and putting on both our YouTube channel and the polygon YouTube channel for a while because we wanted people to be able to find it..
"justin mcelroy" Discussed on Polygon's Quality Control
"It's been such a joy to get the feedback from y'all and to bring you guys the program that we've brought you for these many years when he's four but just actually out sorry, I felt older than twenty four. That's an old. It's an old show. Yeah. But just and we we wanted to get you on really to talk about, you know, the original concept and the original inception of quality control. Take us back to this show that you created and why and what it was supposed to be halcyon days. When you work at a video game website. There is video games. One of the best like most fun conversations. He gets a have is talking to someone who is reviewing a game and sort of hearing the the scoop, you know, the skinny if you're not the first person to play it. It is really exciting to talk to the person who's his the first one to play it and get their sort of like unvarnished. Here's here's what I think, you know. And a lot of times you get the as review is evolving. You know, the reviews are much more. Thoughtful, I think measured and often a little bit more polished than what you get just talking to that talk to that person gain their first thoughts, and for me every time I've ever written a review I've had like a thousand points for every point I made in the review what you know, what I mean thought that those points were bad, but they just didn't belong there. And I love those conversations and for me, it was a way to sort of bring that conversation into a into a podcast. So that's part of it and partially. I think that they're reviewing of games is something that like I mean, my first job that was an actual permanent position was as the first reviews editor at joystick. I got the review program going there. We had not done that up until that point. And some of the I love and I find fascinating. And and I think that the story behind a review is. A lot more interesting. I think than even you know, if you're talking about a movie, there's a story there. I went and watched the movie, you know, but with a game, there's always this sort of like, eb and flow, where you're, you know, how do I feel about this is this may be a great moment in any. I used to love to talk about when you're doing a bad video game. There's a great moment that happens every time when you're when you have the realization where you're like, oh, wait a minute. This is a bad video game. And all my God. I'm gonna play all of this bad video game. So does it goes very early? So it's like four or five hours, and it's it's dreadful, and I love it. And so in Soviet as I love hearing about those moments where you're like, oh my God. I'm I'm stuck reviewing a bad game. And I think that that context is is really interesting for people who really care about care about games. What was sold very enjoyable for me though in the early days and kind of the middle period of qu-. Control. Was this concept of games as a service and games evolving over time? It was something that polygon really pioneered with our reviews program, where we would constantly be updating those reviews, and and you know, helping our audience understand how game was growing and being tended to by its developers and Puckett's quality control really became a place to have those kinds of you know, after the fact ongoing conversations about how what was like to live with and in a game over time. There really wasn't wasn't a place anywhere else to get that kind of information and a podcast. You've mentioned regrets of mine. Charlie. Thank you for bringing that up. I think my number one was calling it quality control because friend if you're gonna call a show quality control every you better never have an error in an episode. You'd better never have that oughta go or bad editing 'cause hachi it's right there waiting for people to walk through the door of why this show could use is a little quad..

"justin mcelroy" Discussed on Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine
"Madison oh boy woke of assault bones tour serve misguided medicine i'm your co host justin mcelroy and i'm sitting mcrrae well justin i i was trying to prepare for the show this week and i found a way to prepare for both this show and my day job all at once and i was very excited hundreds we nothing it is so rare that you'd you'd think the two would overlap allott sensor both medically oriented but uh telling patients about how we used to bleed people and then actually practicing medicine actually don't very different ideas don't coincide very often so how did you how did you find this overlap well i'm gonna do a i'm going to do a grand rounds genetic rain round since i mean i do want you slanted for bay up there i guess that's worth explain a grand rounds as opposed to making rounds when a doctor says they're making rounds and many people mary no this which is in case you don't let me usually means were walking around and physically seen patients in a hospital or then follow that following that up by sitting at a table and talking about them there's a rounds but grand rounds moon grand rounds is when we all sit in a room together and teach each other something so it you soon actually involve a patient bakken back in the day you would actually bring a patient into the room and tell all of the residents are students or whatever about them and um you know go over their case in front of everybody and hopefully like get some good ideas about what to do next the patient will be present yet mess.
