"justin houston" Discussed on The MMQB NFL Podcast

"It just seems weird. It seems like a very odd decision to move off of Zappi and risk him getting claimed and everything else when, what is your backup plan? It's not even Malik Cunningham. You waived him too. It was interesting. I don't know what your thoughts are, but I was surprised at the way New England handled that. Yeah. You know, I know he came back on the practice squad, and maybe that was kind of like, you know what, we could risk losing him. But that says a lot, right? You're willing to risk losing Bailey Zappi and for the entire off-season, we're all wondering, will he take over for Mac Jones? So I'm probably going to give away a little sample of my story next week. I'm doing winners and losers for the preseason. And I wrote Mac Jones is a winner. He hasn't really done much, but it's all set up for him to succeed this season. I feel like Bill Belichick wants to make sure this guy has a fair shake. Yeah, last year was a disaster with the coaching hires that I made. But Mac, I'm going to do you a favor here. I'm going to give you a dominant defense. I'm going to give you a reliable running game, a competent OC and Bill O'Brien, and we're going to make Zappi on the practice squad. Like, what else do you want Mac Jones? If you can't win with a good defense, a good running game, and you can't improve the passing game. Yeah, I get the targets or the weapons are not as good, but it's all set up for you to do something. And, you know, Trey Lance will kill for the situation, right? Like even as Zach Wilson, the same guys from the quarterback 2021 draft class. So I just view Mac Jones as a winner, but does he deserve to have all this kind of, you know, success around him? Yeah, no, it's a good point, man. And if Mac Jones is smiling ear to ear right now, because Bailey Zappi is on the practice squad. And Mollie Cunningham, by the way, also got added back to the practice squad. So you end up getting them both back. But to your point, like anybody claims them, they're gone. I mean, you know, it shows New England's not too in love with either one of them. But if I'm Mac Jones, I'm like, look, both those guys just got cut. So I know I'm clearing away the number one guy. Number two, I don't have a defensive coordinator as my offensive coordinator anymore. So that's a nice change of pace. I actually have a coach who's on the offensive side who's running the offense. And Bill O'Brien, who said what you want about him as a head coach, he's a good coordinator. And they added, you know, they went out and got Kasicki and they added Juju Smith-Schuster. I'm sure they lost Jacoby Myers. But all told, like, look, I don't think the Pats are going to be the greatest show on turf this year. But they're better set up for success than they were a year ago on offense, where a year ago, Matt Patricia, who's a defensive coordinator who can't even coach a defense, was coaching the offense. I don't know. Bill Belichick, maybe the greatest coach ever. It's an interesting decision, to say the least. Yeah, no, I'm with you. And I'm really intrigued to see what, like, you know, last week we were talking about, like, it's a bad year for the pesky teams to make a noise in the AFC because it's just so low in the AFC. I really want to light the Patriots. And we're going to get into it right now with their AFC bracket predictions. But it's going to be tough, man. And it just, again, all eyes on Mac Jones. And, yeah, you know, even a guy like the wide receiver from last year, the second-round pick, the surprise, Taequann Thornton, right, the speedy wide receiver, he's kind of struggling. So it might be a tough uphill battle for Mac Jones. But, again, like, when you have a good defense and you have a good running game, all you need is, like, maybe 17 points to win a game. Yeah, I canned the ball to Armandre Stevenson. Don't turn the ball over and hope you can score, like, on one or two key drives in the game. All right, look, let's get into it. So we got the AFC preview. We'll do the NFC after this. You and I differ on a few of our playoff teams, not that many of them. Why don't we lead off with this? Why don't you give your division winners in the AFC, and then who are your three wildcards as well? Okay, for the AFC West, I have the Chargers. The AFC East, I have the Jets. AFC North, I have the Bengals. The AFC South, I have the Jaguars. And now my AFC wildcard teams are stacked. I got the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Baltimore Ravens. I'm telling you, man, you wrote the story about the quarterbacks in the AFC. They're just dominant quarterbacks. So for me, I can't pick the teams who are the underdogs right now, but those seven for me are pretty loaded. Okay, so I know the big question under that is, why the Chargers over the Chiefs? Yeah, I know that's going to be the big question I'm going to get for that one there. And it might not be the best reasoning here, but I know it's only one year of a sample size, but I saw the Rams firsthand covering them a year ago and trying to be a defending Super Bowl champion for the longest season in NFL history. They got to that mountaintop, and they lost that urgency. It's a different scenario because they don't have a Patrick Mahomes, and they just unloaded everybody after a terrible 5-12 season. But I just saw the fatigue, and maybe they parted too hard, Sean McVay, and everybody seemed injured. I don't know if I'm ever going to see this again, Matt, but the offensive line had 11 starting offensive line combinations in the first 12 games, and I could not keep track of who's who on that roster. So part of me kind of feels like, well, they've won. You might be right here. I forget what it is. AFC West six or seven consecutive AFC West division time. They've been the big hosted five straight AFC title. That's a lot, and at some point it's like, two Super Bowls in four years, I think we kind of let off a little bit, and that's the only reason I have. I'm not even worried about the wide receivers, Matt, on the Chiefs. I think they have some good players, but it's just kind of getting back to that mountaintop, and it's been two decades since the team has repeated, and I keep looking at the Chargers, and I shouldn't put my faith in the Chargers. I've covered that team for four years, like I mentioned on the top of the show. They're always having high expectations but always falling down in Jacksonville, falling down in Las Vegas. They just can't seem to get out of their own way, but they're talented. They're stacked, and maybe I was out there too many times in Costa Mesa watching Kellen Moore and Justin Herbert operate. They look pretty good, and I feel like eventually you've got to take the opportunity and take that division from the Chiefs, but I don't feel confident about it, but it kind of feels like, okay, there needs to be some type of change eventually. Yeah. Listen, they're to a point where, and the Chiefs I mean, they've won seven division titles in a row. The only team, I believe, that's ever won more division titles in a row are New England with Brady and Bell. At one point they won 11 in a row. I think the Rams in the 70s also won seven. Yeah, they've been to three Super Bowls out of the last four years, won two of them. You're right, at some point you would think there's just going to be a year where maybe they have some injuries or they step back. The one thing I will say with the Chargers here before I get into my pick, they are super talented. My concern with them is always the same two things, their coach and their injury history. They just get hurt every year and then Stanley does things that I just can't understand, although I do think Kellen Moore is a big upgrade over Lombardi and Herbert's fantastic. Hey, this is Paris. So, my seven playoff teams, so the same teams that we have, I'll give my division winners, we both have the Bengals and the Jaguars, so we were in lockstep there. I had the Dolphins winning the AFC, so basically all this ensures is that we're going to get a lot of hate mail from Buffalo. And I had the Chiefs winning the AFC West. I'm just a big, like, you've got to prove it to me. So the Chiefs have proven it so many years, I'm sticking with them. My wildcard teams, as you have, I have Buffalo, I have the Jets, you have them going in the division, I have them as a wildcard team. And instead of the Ravens, I'm going to go with Pittsburgh. I went back and forth on that, because that division I think is the best division in football. All those teams are solid, like, you could even make an argument for Cleveland if you want to, I just think Cleveland's in the wrong division. I just, man, I love the Steelers' defense and I love Tomlin. So my whole thing is, if Pickett's just decent, that team should win a lot of games. Now, I don't think they have the ceiling that Baltimore does. Baltimore, if it all comes together, I think is a team with a higher ceiling. I just wonder, you know, different offensive coordinators, is that a good thing, is that a bad thing? And then you have, like, Beckham, that could be great for them, that could be he plays five games. It's just, it's a weird, I feel like I know a little more of Pittsburgh, so I went there. And with the Chargers, they always ended up putting them in. I'm just wondering after last year, after that loss to Jacksonville, is there any kind of a hangover to that? You know, and then you have a lot of guys in that team that are getting a little bit older and you have a huge cap crunch coming up. I mean, Allen, Williams, Eckler, Mack, like, this could be the last year for all those guys here. So maybe that plays in their favor and there's an urgency and they play great. Or maybe if things start off rough, it becomes almost like, well, where are we going? So I had them at 10 and 7, but just losing a tiebreaker, they were the next team in for me. But yeah, I think the AFC is ridiculous. There's going to be two or three teams that aren't making the playoffs that are legitimately good football teams that just can't get in. Yeah, and you know, I guess with the Chargers, I am banking on that urgency for them to kind of do something. And to even add to your point, man, the GM's been around 11 years, man, and he has never won. Well, I think he won a division title, actually, no division title, no division titles, no AFC championship game appearances. He won like one or two playoff games with the Los Costa Jam. Yeah. And then the head coach, Brandon Staley, might be on the hottest hot seat right now. And you know, a lot of people want that job, too, because of Justin Herbert, so it puts a lot of pressure on Brandon Staley. So, you know, I'm going to say they're going to put it together for at least, you know, a good run. I don't I don't know how far they're going to go, but I think they might win a division. Will that be enough to keep everybody intact? I don't even know that that's going to be enough. So we'll see. I'll tell you what, man, if you're right, though, and the Chiefs, the Bills and the Ravens are wildcard teams, that is going to be an insane first weekend of play. You're going to have these teams at home, having Mahomes come in and Allen come in. And you covered the team, you know, better than me, like if the Chiefs go play the Chargers on the road in a playoff game, it's going to be Arrowhead Stadium out there. I mean, it's such a weird or if like the Bills go to Jacksonville, it's going to sound like Buffalo. I mean, it's just such that to me is everything with the Chargers. It's so hard. Every game's a road game for them. I mean, very rarely, you know, maybe once a blue one, they'll play some game like whatever. The other fan base is not large either, but it's just tough. They play the Cowboys at home this year. The place is going to be Jerry World. It's just, it's so, that's got to be so defeating. You have a big home game and you come out and there's 70,000 people rooting against you. I'll never forget covering the Super Bowl at SoFi and there were as many Bengals fans as there were Rams fans. You're like, how, how is that possible? I mean, since he's a tiny city in any event, it is weird. All right, so who, who's the team in the AFC that you think is not going to live up to the hype? That is a team that maybe is getting too much shine. And you're right about the whole LA being all over the place, man. I've lived there all my entire life and, and I even grew up a Vikings fan. I don't even know if I ever told our boss, John plume that, but I was a big Randy Moss fan because there was no LA team for three decades here. So that, that, that, that makes sense for why it's a, it's a very unique situation, a very unique town. And I'm sure Chargers are probably tired of talking about it. I used to ask all the time, Matt, so I could tell you about how I know they get with that. But as my my disappointment, right, that is a question here. I didn't, you know, for you, you know, you didn't have the chargers and that's surprising to me. But for me, it was the dolphins, you know, you have the winning division and the way I look at the dolphins is like, man, losing Jalen Ramsey is going to be tough. Like, you know, he's supposed to be this big piece that, that you got on the off season, you know, helping out with Xavier and Howard and they have a good defense. But Jalen Ramsey is supposed to be a big part of that defense and he won't be back until December. So that's a long time. What if you have a rough start there and you're already, you're already in the stack division, you're playing the Jets, the Bills and the Patriots twice a year. So why don't you fall behind there? And then I feel like every time I see a big fan, Joe defense, it's always year two. Year one is kind of a transition year and they don't really take off until year two. So if you don't have Jalen and that really kind of hinders, hinders your progression a year one. And then on offense, like it feels like, yeah, they got Jalen Watto and they have Tyreek Hill, but then it's kind of like, well, no tight end. And I get Mike McDaniel doesn't really like to feature a tight end. And then the three running backs, they're really fast, but is one of them really good? I can't figure that out. I know they have the rookie from Texas A &M who, you know, he can't really stay healthy. And then you have Jeff Wilson also going to be an IR. That's also concerning to me. And then two, can he stay healthy? So I think a lot of focus is on the big two there. And I'm not even sure I'm, you know, there might be the best to do on the NFL. Some people are higher in general water than, than I am. I still see some concerns there with drop balls here and there, but Tyreek Hill is amazing. Everybody knows that. So I feel like the dolphins are a little, even with Jalen Ramsey, maybe a little overrated for me. You know, it's fine. I pick them in the division because I like Fangio being the coordinator there and Ramsey I thought was a good get. Obviously he mentioned he's hurt most of the year. Of all the teams I picked to win the divisions in the AFC, they're definitely the team I'm the shakiest on because A, the division's good, B, all the things you just mentioned are fair. Like I don't know if Tua is going to play a full season. I mean, what happens, obviously nobody wants to see it, but God forbid if he gets hurt like week one, what if he gets a concussion? Like how long is he out for? Is he out for the year? Like I don't know, you know, I mean, it's a scary thing. So I do hear you. There's a lot of concerns. My team is Baltimore. I kind of laid out why, look, Odell Beckham's a great talent, but can he stay healthy? Rashad Bateman's a good talent, can he stay on the field? I believe in Lamar Jackson. I am curious though, if they ask him to throw the ball as often as Burrow has to throw it, Mahomes has to throw it, Allen has to throw it. Can they play that way and still have that element of being unique? Because I think the hardest thing to defend about them is how unique they are. And Jackson is such a freak, you know, with his arm, with his legs. Are they going to take that away a little bit because he's been hurt the last couple of years? I don't know. But I'll tell you the truth, my biggest fear with them is just defensively. I mean, you know, Marcus Peters is gone, Kaleis Campbell's gone, Jason Viera-Paul is gone, Justin Houston's gone. I mean, I'll tell you, I was doing a piece that was coming out next week for us where we're kind of looking at everybody's strengths and weaknesses, and you're on the NFC side of that, I got the AFC. I was looking at their pass rush. Who the hell is going to sack the quarterback? It's a problem. So in this conference, I just feel like, man, the AFC, if you can't get pressure, you better be able to score 30 plus because I don't hate stopping anybody. I think Baltimore is good. I just don't see them as like a Super Bowl contender, which I think is kind of where the hype has gone this year. So I love hardball as a coach. I think that they're always going to be a playoff contender. It's partially the defense, it's partially the new offensive coordinator, and it's partially being in a conference where they can win 10 games and still not make the playoffs. Yeah, you know, for me with the Ravens, I'm not going to defend them too hard because I feel like I could easily flip them with the Steelers. They're kind of even for me, but maybe just hearing you right now, Matt, you might have been higher. Lamar Jackson pushing that ball down the field, he's a good downfield passer. I know he hasn't stayed healthy the last two seasons, especially in the back of the schedule. That's brutal. For him to miss that playoff game against the Bengals a year ago, imagine he was playing, they might've won that game. But if you can't be reliable, he hasn't had the MVP year since 2019, which feels like a long time ago, but I just like that they're trying to bring that modern game of pushing the ball down the field and utilizing Lamar Jackson's strength as a passer. I think he gets overlooked in that area. But then we were just talking about Vic Fangio and how everybody's trying to counter the Vic Fangio inspired defenses by running the ball more and who runs the ball the best, the Baltimore Ravens. So maybe they're going away from it a little too early when it, yeah, so, and they were ahead of the, they were ahead of their time maybe with these defenses. And that's the way you counter them is by, you know, you know, doing the quick game and the running game, but sometimes it's good to be ahead of the curve. So who knows? Maybe now I'm going back, back and forth, now I'm going back to the Ravens because if people are all going to start doing the running game and do run heavy to counter these Vic Fangio defense, then maybe the Ravens have something brewing that could be special down the line. But again, I don't, I don't like, can I trust Rashad Bateman being healthy? Will Zay Flowers turn out to be a good first round pick? How about OBJ? Will you turn back the clock? So there's a lot of question marks where like eventually made it, they're going to be like, you know what? We tried it that way. Let's go back to all reliable and throw it to Mark Andrews, whatever, 10 times a game. Yeah. Yeah. Andrew, she's underrated. He's a fantastic tight end. Look, we're going to get nowhere surprises all leagues off. Be quick with this. I already told you. I think they're a playoffs team. Pittsburgh's my team. I kind of laid out why. I mean, I love Tomlin. I think Tomlin is a top three coach in the league with Andy Reed and Bill Belichick. Defensively man, like people don't even know how Alex Highsmith is got 14 and a half sacks last year. They have TJ Watt, they have Cam Hayward, they brought in Marcus Golden, who's a supplemental, like a good rotational pass rusher. They added Desmond King, who the Texans cut. It was one of the biggest surprise cuts of the day on Tuesday. They bring him in. They've got Joey Porter Jr., Patrick Peterson, Minka Fitzpatrick. That is, that's a damn good defense. They have guys. I mean, now the question, of course, is offensive line, how good is it? And can Pickett play? The one thing I can't stand is like false confidence. There are so many people in Pittsburgh, if you tweet out about the Steelers, or just, if you say anything bad about Kenny Pickett, or you question him in any way, the brigade comes out. It's just like, you don't understand the greatness of Kenny Pickett. It's like, I got to tell you, I watched every throw he made last year. He was a guy. He threw five touchdowns against seven picks. He spent five years in college, four of which, by the way, he was mediocre to atrocious, and then one year he was unbelievable as a senior. Fine. I obviously believe in them as a team. I think he's going to be better, but is he going to be more than a game manager? I don't know. I wouldn't go there. Now, look, he's got George Pickens, who I think you pretty much just wailed the ball downfield to him and let him go up and get it. I think the Steelers' weapons are good. Offensive lines are concerned. Pickets are concerned. I think Tomlin, who almost got duck Hodges to the playoffs years ago, can just massage it. Now, I will say, when they get to the playoffs that they do, I think a team like Cincinnati or Kansas City or Buffalo is going to put a number on them, but I think they're better than people think.

"Baltimore is another slight under for me. The over under is 10 and a half, which I just think is too high. It's plus one Oh four to go over, which tells you that there's action on the under. I just have questions. I have questions on the defense. Humphrey's already hurt. I wasn't sold on the defense to begin with. They're bringing all these different weapons in. They're relying on Zay Flowers, who is, you know, is young. I always get nervous relying on young receivers. Lamar's health. Not sure about that. Yeah. Lamar just got this huge contract. Never totally know what that, what happens to somebody. And really tough division. They're loaded on the offensive line. They still have Andrews, but this division, I don't, I have them kind of fourth for talent. Yeah. Is that crazy? I don't think so. It was, it's a very different team, right? I think it was like a mass exodus defensively. They lost JPP Peters, Chuck, some of these guys are like, Oh, a little older, but they were like clubhouse guys. So yeah, Clay's Campbell, obviously Justin Houston, all of them. And so that's one thing. The other thing, and by the way, did we talk too much about Lamar Jackson? He got paid. It was fine for months. We were like, well, now are they going to do right by him? He got paid and he's up there with the, with the best. So now he has to play football. And I don't know, this is another thing where Hobart is a great regular season coach, right? He'll usually get you to double digit wins, but I like it slightly under cause I think the division has gotten better. And my surprise to win the division, I can't have four teams at nine wins in this division. So I get it. The thing when I said about how he got paid, he got the contract. Yeah. That brings a whole different level of pressure. Like a year for a year ago, it becomes, they got to take care of Lamar. He's so, you know, it's all positive. Now he has two bad games. It's like, my God, we're paying Lamar all this money. What's happening. And it's just different. And we've seen like, he definitely hears stuff. Yeah. Right. He's definitely attuned to what people are saying. Yeah. I mean, he had to go, he couldn't get out of the bathroom that way. The one thing I want to say is, and like a lot of the experts will laugh at this, but how much is Justin Tucker worth to win total a half a game? Like, you know, in my rankings, I had him as a two point guy and he was the only like special teams person. Cause it's like, he has to be worth two wins. Yeah. So if they're in a, an eight and a team, he gets them the ninth win or, you know, nine and seven when he gets them the 10th one, that's the only thing I worry about with them. Their schedule is a little goofy where they're at Cincinnati week two at Cleveland at Pittsburgh week four or five. And then they go to London and play Tennessee in week six and they kind of have to get through those first six being like three and three. If they're going to get double figures, it gets a little easier after that. Stroud and Richardson, two of the first three. Yeah. The defense is, I think my biggest question mark of anything in the AFC North. All right. Make your case for the Browns over under nine and a half plus 400 to win the division. Do you have money on this? I do. I have too much. I don't know why. I don't know if it's, uh, if it's, you know, because we, we know new people who work with the Browns and maybe this is my little dig, but I don't, I have them at 11 wins. I think, you know, DeSean, I'm throwing it out. Like most people are saying, well, you know, we had a good sample out of Watson and uh, he wasn't good. I was like, no, I don't think he could have been thrown back in there like that and expect to pay dividends. And you know, Elijah Moore's added Goodwin, Cedric Tillman, this rookie out of Tennessee. You got Chubb focused, not splitting carries now with Kareem Hunt. No longer. Yeah. Um, they pick up Thornhill, the safety from Kansas city bookend. Miles Garrett was a Darrius Smith. I think this defense is going to be amongst the best in the division. So I have them. Stefanski is good enough and they now they have Jim Schwartz. Like I said, the fancy is good enough. I think so. What does that mean? Well, he won his most important two arms and two legs and a head and he could hold a clipboard. Listen, he was at home resting. Um, when, uh, with COVID when his team won that playoff game, that's what you wanted. Just get out of the way. Let them do what they can. Their first five, four at home against Cincy, Tennessee, Baltimore, San Fran, and then at Pittsburgh week two, Monday night. Yeah. And that's it. And then they got at Indy week seven and I don't think any is going to be very good, but they have some stinkers on their schedule at Indy home, Arizona. They have an at Denver. If you think Denver's not going to be that good at the Rams Jacksonville at home, Chicago at home at Houston. So there's some wins they can kind of grab and then just try to split everything else. I have them at least 10 and seven nice. And you could talk me in 11 and six, but I have them as a playoff team. They're also kind of loaded and everybody's talking about their pass rush. They have, I think a top four offensive line. Yeah. Chub. You said pass correctly. Pass pass. You got to work on that. Pass rush. I don't like when you say it right. So it's the thing with them. I think they're that one of the high ceiling, low, low floor teams, right? Cause if Watson's actually like good, I'm not even saying four years ago. Good. But if he's just good and makes some plays and does some stuff, I think they're no question. They're a playoff team. Sure. If he's a C plus, they might still be a playoff team. If he's last year's Watson, then I would change my mind. You say low ceiling and I know you said the NFC East had the most wins last year, but if you were to, if FanDuel will make a prop about which, I want to know how to say it's like total wins. Which division is least likely to have a last place team with six wins a lot. Like I, I would say AFC North. Yeah. This is the one, right? Cause NFC East it's probably Washington. Right. Yeah. By the way, I want to ask you when you did your win totals, did you, did they add up to, I didn't do that. I didn't want to do that. I can't take you seriously. I think that's psychotic. Really? That's psychotic. You added everything up. How do you know if your numbers add up? I'm okay. This year I'm a little under on my wins.

"Somewhat similar, jackrabbit, janoris Jenkins, you know, decent, but outside of Gilmore, nobody's really good on that list. I want nothing to do with Jenkins. I saw him get torched a number of times last year. I'll pass on it. Peterson's okay, but he can't stay healthy. Hayden. I'm actually kind of I'm intrigued by roads if roads could stay healthy. I wouldn't mind that. I agree. It's really been an injury thing with him. Okay, I mean, I'd be fine with that. My favorite guy if he's healthy is obviously Gilmore, but I do feel like the Raiders might make a late push here. It's been pretty quiet around him now. Let's move to edge. Zidar Smith, who was released by the packers, Melvin Ingram, Justin Houston, Jerry Hughes, Derek Barnett, and of course, when we look at Barnett, we talk about joint practices, Greg. Yeah, I could just hear the other patriots beat writers. They got a lot of Intel from him from the joint practices. They saw him up close. Because they happens all the time. We know it happens all the time. The Patriots do joint practices with somebody. Somebody pops, whatever they played them like they played Mac, the linebacker with Cleveland this year. And he had a decent game. Terrence Mitchell played against the Patriots this year for the Texans forced a fumble on Damien Harris. So, you know, I've always liked Derek Barnett..

"It's time to bone up on the pass rush because we saw it last year, Matthew judon got shut down, didn't play well, the second half of the season. They couldn't stop a nosebleed. Yes, I have high hopes for Joshua. Yes, I have high hopes for Ronnie Perkins. But go, you know, go get some street free agents, some veteran, outside linebacker, edge type of guy, like a Darius Smith, or Justin Houston, or somebody like that, to beef up the passwords because if you're going to play, we saw it last year, Nick, and we talked about it all year. Even before they went down the tubes, if you play a lot of zone coverage, you have to have a good pass rush because if you don't get to the quarterback, they have all day, they'll pick you apart. That's what Josh Allen did to them in the last two meetings. And so yes, they could be done if they are done. Time to beef up the pass rush. What interests me is where do they go scheme wise? And, you know, they've got Mitchell now who's more of his own guy. They played more zone last year and then we've seen them play. I don't think they're going to go straight up zone all the time. That's ridiculous. They're still a lot of man. But if they also go a little smaller at linebacker, that's another thought, right? If you go smaller at linebacker, that could also feed into zone coverage. So bringing Wilson in, signing Mitchell, letting JC Jackson walk, it's very interesting to see what they're planning defensively. Of course, Mayo said towards the end of last year, we need to get faster and all that and more athletic. So we'll see if this continues. And if it does, we have to start thinking a lot about zone and what this defense is actually going to look like, schematically. All right, so what are the needs now? Salary cap situation, options they might be looking at. We have all of that to cover, but first, let's hear about bet online dot AG from our guy Greg. It's that time of year is college basketball takes center stage as the tournament is finally upon us and the scarlet knights are playing tonight, baby. Build better not make any moves between 9 15 and 1130, or else I'm going to be really mad..

"Rams two thousand oh two chiefs. Oh four minnesota. Oh six was joan team. That dwell two thousand texans two thousand thirteen packers two thousand sixteen raiders and then the two thousand eighteen chiefs none of those teams other in two thousand. Six colts even made the conference. Finals So again small sample size but it really makes me nervous. If you can't run the ball or stop the run yet. And i remember the giants fears back. Probably two thousand eleven were thirty second in rushing and i think the only team ever to win a superbowl being the last team in rushing. You have to run the ball. And i know everyone's in a passing that you have to run the ball. But if clyde dilemmas and fumble they probably still win like it a fumble is different than establishing the run it. A free crumble. It's a great play. And i've had some fun with the kid on good morning football because i couldn't pronounce its oda fe. Away is the rookie Ninety nine been attempting oda ffa. Ooi and he actually sent the video to show because like your mispronouncing my name. Here's how you say it was great. But that was an amazing freak. Play where he strips the fumble and recovers it himself and then of course it sets things up. I don't know if it's much ado about nothing about the running back situation in kansas city. But i do know at some. you're going to have to stop the run and in years past it. Came back to bite them in the ass bunch of times until spags came in there. And kinda fix it but this looks brutal and brutal. 'cause chub and hunt were running all over him to even worse the front seven look slow to me. It wasn't even like a. It was a brute force thing but it was also like they just. They couldn't get to the outside. Like lamar basically new anytime. He wanted to get to the ad side. Nobody in their front seven had the speed to go with them. They had a. They have a guy named nick. Bolan who's a rookie who they expect a lot of things. It's very young for him to be. They had a guy named willie gay. Who's really good going inside undecided on making plays. He's not out there. I think they really miss him. And nick bolan who is. You can't tell a rookie like hey we need you now to step up and be that guy like i think he needs to step up and be that guy and i used to have derek johnson. There was always that linebacker justin houston. There's always that linebacker in kansas city who would make the play. They don't have that right. Now and to watch ben neiman get turned around and to watch what they're doing in the middle of the field Two weeks in a row. They're run defense has been just not good. Well let's go through this one. Two three seven two teams one of them's points the night before we take this. The panthers assume they're going to be davis mills. But who knows just quick take would would you like about these two teams so like a sentence on each and what. I like to the raiders to know. resiliency going the way they won that game tonight and then they go and bounce back and win in pittsburgh that says a lot about them. So what. I like big plays They seem like they have a knack and they have a couple receivers. I like edwards to and he's at a couple plays called back but rugs and edwards plus waller. They could move the ball and they can get big ass. Twenty five plus plays and then their defense like Benso elected a good job of the on the ring of this week. A breakdown against his defense for real or not but at least they know what they are. There's paint zone figuring rushmore qazi. They are earning gakugei. Are good bus. Pass rusher. They didn't have either one of those guys doing what they're supposed to do and gawk as new but crosby is having the season we expect them to have last year. But you know eight years now. Derek carr never played in a playoff games. Got hurt that one year He knows what he is. And i think he's living a little looser this year and the players. They've really like him like we talked to all them. They really like him as much as we in the media when a pair apart he lives and breathes and dies this thing and he is a writer through and through and like he makes big place and that past rugs was huge with the pastor monroe in the end zone as he's getting it was huge. I think it's almost like and he doesn't curse doesn't use swear words but it's like the i don't give a you know what from derek carr this season i get it like i know scored is. Let's let's leave it all out there. And i respect it. I watched the entirety of both of their games. And i agree with you on the car thing. It's a tangible thing. You can really see through the tv sometimes. I don't trust the tv but his teammates really like him. I think his coach really likes him. Yes he got hurt in that second game and you can kind of look when somebody gets hurt. There's always concern right. People walking over get. This was kind of like there was twenty people around him and there is like. Oh my god cars hurt you know. Yeah i i don't know i just think that feels like it's his team and i'm with you. It doesn't seem like he gives a shit anymore. It's like he doesn't. I've got you might trade for aaron rodgers. the don't care. Sure an every april. I'm talking every april bill o. i do. It's the raiders of the team to watch the sneaky raiders team to watch for a quarterback like whether it was kyle murray or whether it was joe borough or whether it was whoever. The raiders are the ones who might be moving up and trying to get a quarterback. They don't they stick with derek. Carr jon gruden is like i'm all in on this guy and two two weeks of the season and they've started off six and three and six and four and miss the playoffs last year's but through two weeks of the season those are tough tests to beat the ravens and the steelers. I got given their credit. Well here's the toughest test. They're paying miami this week and besets point. Qb to his out now. I'm not a huge fan. I do really like percent. He's somebody that kyle. And i have both the joy in this little colts running got hurt two years ago but their offense the way it's constructed was for this is the classic thing that People love to talk about disobey warren..

"Game chicago bears. You've been like in the building like you've been camp for a couple of practices right. Yeah no. I've had the chance to go see the mcvay operation person in it is a well oiled machine. Let me tell you Like guess it's been really neat seeing matthew stafford in person. Because i think that's what everyone's looking forward to right like being able to see mcveigh in an offense where he doesn't have to basically handhold the quarterback. We know that. I think it was touched up from a pf. Who had that little chart about quarterbacks how well and how much appear to. Have you know when quarterbacks straight drop back. And i think you guys mentioned early. Jared goff when he's asked to drop back without play action is not very good and now mcveigh has a quarterback. Were not only can the quarterback freelance on his own economic compensate for potentially him play calling mistakes and being able to put the ball deep down the field Stafford's mabel move on the run seeing from what i've seen you know at camp again. I know the rams defense is still undergoing construction. I guess considering. They've lost their best secondary members but they still have aaron. Donald jalen ramsey. There's a ton of other town players. He's not ripping them apart but he's having success specifically on the deep ball his connection with sean jackson. I'm looking forward to seeing if this person is. It's crazy to watch in like just on jackson's still has the same speed that you know. He had maybe ten years ago. It's not two games sean. Jackson games this year are going to be wild. Let's say okay. You're not wrong. But also i have this ma this great memory of and the rams traded for brandin cooks and the rams social put out a clip of like bob goth bring in camp and then for the next twenty seconds. It was just cuts of sean mcvay. Go into different coach players going. You see cooks. That's beat she. How fast food politics like he has wanted deep vertical speed receiver and for that he a big part of his offense since the super bowl run and they just couldn't get it with off so you bring on jackson you bring in due to who is objectively fast and there are other things about all that may affect. He plays in that he is my weight. But you bring in these guys end. Okay to sean games. Let's say you get like six to sean games. That could still be really important to this team. Like getting a win over the niners getting of the playoffs. South and everything. So i think the sean is a very under appreciated addition to that entire rams offensive makeover absolutely is but the i think the biggest thing is going to be there outside line like whether or not that holds up. Because i know it's not a particularly impressive group. I mean whitworth is solid. I mean david edwards bright aling covert hadn't seen like a. It's a solid but i don't know if it's a difference making offensive line where you know you trust them every single game week in week out if they're league average group and they allow the running game especially now that they've lost Can makers for the season. And you're relying on daryl henderson sunday. Michelle in that backfield whether or not you know. They're i run game won't be overly important. I guess like in the sense that they're not going to rely on to you. Know run two hundred yards a game or anything. But i think that unit if there's any type of concern that i have for the rams this season it's probably outline right. The the lack of offense wanted this was shocking. I remember finishing the draft. Just being like wait done second off season in a row. They didn't do anything for the offense line. Last offseason just magically got better but aaron kromer gone less often cooked as i've often said first round picks and the offensive line just massively overrated things that are not critical to team building whatsoever. Gosh if the rams are good out will be annoying. Because that's just flying in the face of what we believe to be true about football. I was speaking of offensive line. Stephen has thoughts and prayers For the bears off of line facing aaron donald this week yes thoughts and prayers. It's gonna be at least the cannon fodder of andy dalton his out there instead of justin fields. 'cause you can't start them in week one chasing aaron donald of course critical smart. Now he's gonna be okay gonna make it. Bears are starting jason peters and germain petty left and right tackle right. So the answer's answer's no twenty. Twenty one man jason league. Yeah we'll be like he wasn't. Jason peters wasn't still in the league and there are so much so many injuries along the bears off to tackle group that peters has now become still in the league because he got signed in the middle of august. Thirty eight years old. But yeah andy. it's gonna. It's not going to be pretty. I mean i'm. I wanted to see just fields play. But i'm kind of happy for that. He's safe he's going to be safe. The other thoughts and prayers that we have on the docket is for seattle indianapolis. Another one o'clock game which is kaelin with the seattle offensive line against deforest buckner. Which you got to sell me on this one. Because i seattle's office That bat are they. It's not no it's not. I think they're upgrading. Would gave jackson. The interior is going to be big for them. I think damian lewis even poche like we'll see how they hold up. But i'm just a firm believer in the forest buckner like you Last the end especially down the second stretch her second half of the year he really turned on sack numbers of great and whatever but the fact that he's able to generate so much pressure and i think he's very much super important to the fulcrum of matt Assist because they don't blitz a lot they just kinda let their front in front front seven do their thing. And i know that justin houston's gone we'll see oakwood you pay. I picked him the wind defense worker year. Because i believe that the forest buck was going to be the guy that generates so much. Interior pressure allows pay to kind of walk into sack options. And we love seeing sack number. So i'm very curious to see because last season we saw russell wilson especially from the interior again injured offensive line so again different circumstances here but this all pro caliber player completely new system for russell wilson stepping into shane waldron. I'm really curious to see how that dynamic works especially when you consider how russell wilson struggled with too high. A structure defenses last season and the colts one of the better units at defending vending explosives with with their safety unit. So americans sell goes buckner for them is kind of like what he was for the forty niners in kind of like would fletcher cox was during the super bowl year. Where in ben can correct me. If i'm wrong on this. I didn't grind all the film from twenty seventeen but i believe they put him over the center lot dantonio protections you had the center has to worry about blocking this monster in front of him and that just opens everything else up for the other players because you can run stunts in games. No demand block the canzone block right. So yeah i think that's he's absolutely the centerpiece of that defense. And i think that's why they went after him because they knew we can't just sit back and play cover two. We gotta be able to pressure the quarterback and this is the way to do it. It goes back to that. Afc teams are building to beat the cheese which means they're building front for rush packages right. It's how you've got to do if you intend on getting out of the playoffs in the afc deforest buckner second best defense tackle in the league behind. Aaron donald chris chris jones now over him. Yeah run yeah not slashes getting a little old long. The not fletch. Not kenny clarke. Kenneth clark's great s. Probably defoe. i. I have a spoiler alert. I see hawks colts. Which is that okay. Lance is healthy. That's nice but you've still got problems especially early. I just have injury issues from the jump. Eric fisher is practicing this week for the first time and like the colts are presenting it..

"He was a guy that i'm a big draft nut. He was the guy that immediately jumped off. The page is being that athletic freak. You know almost seemed like he didn't belong on the defensive line right because he was just so so quick. And like you were talking about with you again. You can kind of explore with get off get that explosion. I felt like. I saw that from him. At penn state. And then go talk about that. I kind of jogged. My memory was him being able to the ravens trying to execute a lot stunts. Which is another area. Where i think you know always gonna be a big factor some curious. How confident are you that the ravens of southbound that civil replacement for do you think always going to be that guy or maybe somebody else so bringing justin houston as well and he is the replacement four in gaga and houston is not as explosive anymore than gok way. He doesn't have that same raw. Get off but he does have a more effective speed to power more effective balraj at this point in time based on what we saw last year last couple of years so they just went order cheaper. I think you can get eight again. The ravens rule ozzie. Newsome's rule from the beginning of time has always been eighty twenty eighty percent of the play for twenty percent of the pay. If you can get a roster full of those guys we're gonna have great depth and a good bit of talent and you're going to be better suited if guys get hurt. So that's being away aways really interesting player. The ravens typically never draft players. I did a profile on kind of ravens draft thresholds or kind of tendencies. They value sack. Production typically exponentially they love sacks production in college away had no sacks last year and i think that was just kind of a bull crap stat and you hear wink. Martindale talk about it. He says he thinks the most you know overrated stat defensively. Because there's so little context how you get a sack. Which is why brandon thorne works for cbs sports and a couple other affiliates and things of that nature is really interesting chart that he keeps called high quality sacks and low quality sacks So he doesn't chart. You know a guy getting blocked for five seconds and patrick moms runs around and then somebody finally gets him on. The ground isn't chart that as a as a sack. You just charts. Did he win with a rushdie win with a rip did he win with a you know a ghost. Did he win with a club. You know with a a cross job accounting way does so away had a lot of high quality pressures but very little sacks You've watched indiana game. He had ten pressures that game and four quarterback hits and no sacks so it was a little bit strange. I kind of almost rude away out. Ravens of never drafted an edge rusher in the draft who had below eight and a half sacks aside from. I believe it was john. Simon a few years ago out of ohio state was the only one so eight and a half career sacks away didn't have that The there's a couple other. He met every other threshold. Basically so the guy that i thought was a perfect fit for the ravens and i still am a little disappointed. They didn't get was joe. Try i thought he was a little bit of a better fit for what baltimore does but always a really really really high level run-defender at penn state. He was asked to line up in a four in inside shade a lot which is not a. It's really difficult to get a sack at a plane for your between the tackle and the guard. Who are the best pass blockers on team. You're not able to threaten with speed because you're lined up inside of the tackle so you're not gonna production there. But he was an outstanding run-defender. I kirby smart and always talk about low gear versus high gear. You have to kind of. There's always context then. You wanna go look at you know. First and second down are gonna be a little different for an outside linebacker for defensive end and third down especially third in like five or six known passing situations or probable housing situation. So people watch reps from odessa away where he is not gunning down hill off the snap. He's not lined up outside shade of the tackle. He's playing in low gear in other words. He's planning to run. He's diagnosing he's locking out and he's trying to get vision. He's expecting run. He has run responsibilities as a key run-defender but then when you do look at those third down passing situations. He was a lot more productive lot. More pressures had saks the year before in his two thousand nineteen season things like that so the ravens were enamored with him. I think you mentioned the stunts. He can run. He is a fast linebacker. He may be the fastest player on their defense in a in a straight line He can fly man and having that player replace matt juden who had a trident of responsibilities between the passed between the run between pass rushing is going to be a little bit more. What they they ask of away to be the field where their space you know. If the raiders lined up on the left hash always probably gonna be lined up off of the right tackle because he is going to buy one who runs the long side line and chases guys down so if he can do that effectively if he can beat up on tight ends it drop back into coverage and help be part of the deceptive defense. Wink martindale deploys. And i think he's going gonna be a good player. But i still think i would have gone with joe try on overrode yasha one side now side note on oa. I'm just curious. Is he still playing. Gunner was just like one As one rep. That went crazy on social media. Because i mean. I'll tell you i watched it on my bowels of pretty damn good. I mean like you talked about. He's not letting creek might be the fastest player on defense at defense That's something he's still doing. What second leverage played one more rep there than following week. If i'm not mistaken was interesting. Because the deadliest thomas quite a few years ago it was a guy that lined up at boundary corner free safety inside linebacker outside linebacker nose tackle three techniques in defensive season..

"It's superstars Saturday night. And the Battle of the Elliotts in Nashville as reigning NASCAR champion Chase Elliott enters the field to duel with his dad Bill at the season finale of the Camping World SRX series. That's all Saturday on Syria. Yeah. So it's kind of hard to believe. But the sack was not made an official statistic until 1982 so very modern. So guys like Deacon Jones or Merlin Olsen or Carl Eller or any of the purple people, leaders or Doomsday defense or steel curtain like Jack Lambert or mean Joe Greene. All of those guys never had official sack stats, none of them. They were never Given official sacks didn't start until lt was already in the league. That's how recent it is. And so when we have things like all time, sack leaders Or single season sack leaders. It doesn't tell the whole story. Well, researchers have gone back. These are these are people close to my heart. They've gone back and they've done all of the research to see who exactly had all of the sacks over all of those years. I think this is really cool in terms of how many they've gotten. Of ones that were lost. They say that they've got basically every sack. 99% of the sacks since the start of the merger, so that was 1970. So basically all the missing sacks from 70 until 82 they've gotten They've got almost all of them 95% for the 66 through 69 era. That's the start of the Super Bowl. So since the start of the Super Bowl, they've got 95% of the young counted stats and sacks and since 1970 the merger, basically all of them Starting in 61. From 61 until 64. They've got about 80% of them. So what we're looking at is as you go back, you get less and less of the official stats, but they're getting there and the way that they're doing it is Have gone through game logs, official game books. Unofficial tackle totals. Old film and footage play by play charts and piecing it all together. And so this is what we have. If you add all the unofficial sack totals up that they've got, basically since 1960 both AFL and NFL Bruce Smith is still the all time sack leader, sacking 200 sacks on the nose. Bruce Smith Reggie White, just two sacks behind him. 1 98. Then. The great Deacon Jones comes into number three again. All of his sacks are unofficial at 1 73. Then Kevin Green. Number four, the recently deceased. And Julius Peppers at number five. Yeah. Julius Peppers, actually the fifth all time leading sack artist. Lt at number nine. 1 42 Michael Strahan at number 10 1 41.5. The highest Player that's still playing. Carol SUBS at number 12 1 39. So those are some of the numbers. The name. Al Baker is interesting because Al Baker all time played from 1978 through 1990 for four different teams. Al Baker is the 21st all time leading sack artist. That's of these unofficial stats. Say number 21. He is notable because in 1978 Before sex were official. They have tallied Al Baker at 23 sacks for the 78 Detroit Lions. Which would give him half sack more than Michael. Stray hands record. So by virtue of this new research Al Baker, who played for the Lions, who played for the ST Louis Cardinals, the Cleveland Browns and the Minnesota Vikings. From the late seventies through the eighties would be your single season sack record holder. 23 straight in at 22 a half and that a number of guys have 22 that are official Jared Allen, Mark Gastineau, Justin Houston, But how about this? They found Deacon Jones did 22 sacks twice in 64 68. So the unofficial stats say Al Baker is the all time single season sack record holder and Deacon Jones is the only guy ever have to 22 Sachs seasons. Deacon Jones, also at a 21.5 sacks season. 1967. The reason that's really interesting is that even though Deacon Jones doesn't have the single season sack record He did all that in a 14 game season. Deacon Jones did 21 a half and 2 20 two's You know, 14 games schedule in the sixties. And now we'll have a 17 game schedule, which is why I think you'll see stray hands record go down. And you probably will see Eric Dickerson's record. Go down as well. 21 Oh five single season rushing record. Now there's gonna be an extra game. Which is yet another reason why I hate this extra game. But pretty cool that these football historians have gone back and done. The math and Found the unofficial.

Jared Allen Mark Gastineau Chase Elliott Merlin Olsen Jack Lambert Joe Greene Kevin Green Carl Eller Justin Houston Al Baker Eric Dickerson Deacon Jones Michael Strahan 1978 Cleveland Browns Bruce Smith Minnesota Vikings 22 sacks 95% 99%

And you probably will see Eric Dickerson's record go down as well. 21 Oh five single season rushing record, because now there's gonna be an extra game. Which is yet another reason why I hate this extra game. Pretty cool that these football stories have gone back and done. The math and Found.

You're getting them down there so he's gonna view that as a disrespect. And you'd rather be disrespected by somebody. I don't know than the one you don't right. Tom brady the whole story about him. Bill check didn't trust the age thing anymore. So was ready to move on. And tom felt like that was the ultimate the ultimate slap in the face. Like you're the guy that's supposed to believe in me because you've seen me when i'm when people go up against me you're the guy that's supposed to believe me bill and bill didn't and that's what like really really motive re-motivated him if you will if you needed any more of that so it's harder to take from your own team that drafted you that they don't believe in your worth your into a lot of people say well why would he take a pay cut and go somewhere else. Denver might be offering them eleven. He goes to tampa bay and they offer him ten. Why would he do that. It's more of a. It's more of a slight that your team would do it. Your own guys have seen you in practice every day for the past since two thousand eleven it it is something they take personally so you can see why they take. Pay cuts be rad. Wasted money at this point trade him. They won't trade him though. I mean if they pick up his option they could trade him but they'd have to trade him and someone would have to take eighteen million dollars. they're not going to.

"Needle. I think he's one of them. I think he's one of the guys that really have an effect on the game. We'll see. It's funny, because the only thing that Houston's gotten right and probably the last 6 to 8 months is how they treated JJ. What now? I do think you needed a little bit of good PR. And if you continue to compound bad PR, is it worth the third or fourth round pick? That you were going to get for JJ. What? As opposed to letting him go. Letting there be no bad blood on both sides and sort of accruing that goodwill with its fan base. Like In the end, you're still trying to sell something to customers. You've done a really poor job of making those people happy that if J. J Watt ends up being traded to a situation that he's unhappy with And he's done nothing but right by you nothing but right by the city. There's just there's no there's nothing to gain from that by how they treated JJ Watt. So I am happy that they gave him his outright release and will allow him to go out and shop around and get his services. I think there's going to be a really decent size market. For J. J. Watt. And if you look at pretty comparable pass rushers. And where they are. So Justin Houston, for example. Around the same age is JJ Watt. He signed a two year $24 million deal at the age of 30. Now obviously, JJ wants a better player than just in Houston. But If you're a guy who's proven that you can get to the quarterback. And this is what it costs. It cost 12 year. It cost 13 $14 million a year. So unless J. J. Watt is going to do a team an absolute favor and signed for nothing by NFL standards. You're getting a guy who I think is still a proven pass rusher. A guy who yes, has had some injury concerns. But ah guy who can certainly help you come playoff time. A guy who certainly commands double teams commands respect. Guy who was done just about everything you can do in this league. Aside from winning So I think a lot of teams are going to be interested in JJ Watt and he's gonna have seven viable offers, and it comes down to where you want to go. We'll see where he wants to go. I think we'll see him sign here in the next probably two weeks. This is the time for him to listen to pitches look at schemes talked to his agent recharge after a disappointing season. And then make a decision. But he's going to sign before free agency. The reason that they cut you was to let you Signs somewhere before the money gets kind of gobbled up and you're competing with other players because you got cut and you're not a free agent. Technically, so you don't have to abide by the same free agency rules so There's gonna be a market for JJ Watt and we'll see where he landed. You listening to the Harrison Experience live on CBS Sports radio. Keep it locked in. Talking.

"Com. It is the hammer and Nigel show Big Nige is out. But the coach is stepping in the studio like a boss. How are you? I'm a boss. Baby. I am the boss. I am Mayor Daley in Chicago. I'm Bruce Springsteen. Pre do you wire whatever and pre uniting the country. What a fraud. I'm good. That is the voice of Dan Dockage, host of the Dan Dockage show Monday through Friday noon to three on one of 75. And S O every Friday. It feels like the first question has to be latest on the Colts quarterback search. What are you willing to give up for Carson Wentz? If anything, I'm not willing to give up what I would give up if the rumors were true about Russell Wilson. For Russell Wilson wants out. I'll give a first round this year first round next target. Whatever they want, they can have Quinton Nelson. Or they could have Darius let I don't care. I want a quarterback Carson Wentz, I I like what Chris Ballard said on my show week ago. Hey, look, we're not doing this desperate like people think they're desperate. Because clearly you need a quarter by Jacob Eason and some guy they signed the practice by the only guy in okay, fine, but I'm not getting desperate. I give up, you know, 3rd 4th round pick, but I'm not going first rounds. I'm not going what I'm reading. Not at all guys broke seems like and Russell Wilson is not going anywhere. Right? This is a brilliant move by his agent, because if you're Russell Wilson's agent, you see what the market is for quarterbacks right now, and you're thinking to yourself. All right. There's no way blue Hell. Seattle's gonna let my client go, so we're going to need all them for every single dollar they've got right now. Or maybe we do go somewhere. Well, that's the thing about it is I had a friend. Tell me who's really tied in to the NFL. Tell me Look, the Seahawks are hostile that he's on a like a media tour, saying the same thing. I've been hit more name, but he's got the numbers to back him up. He's right. So you have a choice to make. If you're Seattle, Do you see yourself moving forward with Russell Wilson? Or do you think all right? It's time maybe to see what we can get for him. And I swear to you if I'm the Colts, the whole seeing what I could get form would be Like I don't know if you ever seen draft day with Kevin Costner gives Seattle like three first round picks every year second, and I'm doing that. I'm making that happen. Fantasy general manager here. I don't think you do. One of these guys were coming to Indy, Russell Wilson or dish on Watson. I personally would rather have Russell Wilson, but I don't know the background or the inside locker. Money them. I've always been a big, big, big time. Russell Wilson fan. That's not to say that I'm not a dish on Watson fan. I take both my toes to be tapped, and I'd give up every draft pick we have until I'm dead. That should be it. We're gonna give up every draft pick until Doc. It's dies. But anyway, I just think that both of them would be great. But I'm a huge Russell Wilson with a young team guy you want, say, I'm Donald. Don't know about Sam Donaldson like because he's been on the Jets. I don't know, right? He stinks, or if he's just been surrounded by you on that, Ryan A lot of contract. Yeah, it's kind of the same, but a little bit younger than Philip Rivers. I'm just giving you logic because logic says in this day and age in the NFL, it used to be If you draft a quarterback, he's gonna sit here too. Right now, if you and I if you drive him in the top four because there's a kid from North Dakota State and the kid from BYU Zach Wilson and bumped into the top four if you dropped him in the top four, I don't think you're drafting a guy to sit. Have you seen Zach Wilson's mom? No BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, do yourself a favor and go on to Google and look up. Zach Wilson's mom did, though this no Jake from I want Jake from to be drafted by the Colts. For that very reason. The coach Dan Dockets joining us. It's funny. We're fans. We're talking about Russell Wilson and Shawn Watson culture going to end up with Fitz magic, aren't they? That's what's gonna happen here. Give me by percentage. The cult's end up with you Kobe Percent and Fitz Magic or It's magic and on the other end is to Shawn Watson, a Russell Wilson. I think it's that if it's a teeter totter our ass is on the ground with with just said and Fitz Magic. I don't imagine the other two coming. Speaking of Dijon Watson heard today that JJ Watt asked for his release from the Texans got it now is not the same dude that he was about five years ago. But I think of the right situation, Situational pass rushing. That's a guy that could make impact on a team that just needs a few more pieces. If you're the Colts, Is this something you look at? Or this? JJ Watt, just Want to go play with his brother is probably in Pittsburgh. I don't know the answer to the second one. But I know the answer to the first one. You need pass rush here like folks that think well, the Colts have a Super Bowl roster way. Second. Chris Ballard will tell you there's work to do. Where's the working? We've already talked about quarterback? I don't know. Based on what Chris said. T Y Hilton is gonna be back. So you need to speed wide receiver. I don't know. Based on what Chris Ballard told me that that, uh Xavier Rhodes is going to be back. So you need a corner and oh, by the way, you need pass Rush. Take Justin Houston and go me back. So my answer would be honor. Absolutely See where JJ watch head is. Is he going to go play with his brother? I would assume so and to your career Fun story, word on the street, Lee. Some of the things I've read the day he's talked openly about that in the past, so Probable. But I'm definitely kicking the tires before we get into some pics for tonight and the weekend, the Hoosiers taking on the Buckeyes this Saturday and I'm not just saying this to be over the top. I had money on the game I did in game betting Hoosiers against Northwestern the other night. That may have been the worst basketball game I have seen in a long time, Coach. I don't disagree. Butler Yukon National Championship game who was among the worst, but that for probably 40 minutes and went from 50 minutes, two overtimes was the worst basketball you're ever gonna see. All right. But having said that Indiana I thought guarded really hard down the stretch. They made their free throws. And then a couple guys particularly l'd, ERM came up big with shots, So I'm kind of all in on Indiana. Now, Look, I'm I'm the wind I'm with you win or tie. You lose. I'll rip your ass, but I'm with you. You win. All right, let's go. I like the way they played. I think they're gonna play the Buckeye stuff. All right, let's get down to the nitty gritty here, Coach. Let's make some money this weekend. What are you looking at? I'm gonna take Nebraska minus for our plus 14.5 against Illinois. I know everybody loves Illinois did driving too great but Illinois kind of place to who they're playing. Like they're not a dynamo team. They're not one of these teams. It just kicks your ass. I'll tell you who is Ohio State. But I think India is going to play a high state. Well at noon tomorrow. I'm just giving. This is a recommendation. Follow me on Twitter at Dan Dockage. I have a new strategy for gambling. I am on Lee betting different game. Different teams in game live made a ton last night on Kansas and halftime going to make a ton tomorrow on Indiana. But I do like the one that you like. And I like taking Nebraska minus 14.5 Seems like a lot. I'm gonna give you a real degenerate stand, please. Denver at Western Illinois tonight. Denver's too and 13 Western Illinois is five and 12 Denver's 330 seconds in total defense coach Western Evan Oy 328th. I am going to ride out western Illinois. I'm gonna lay the six here Western Illinois 135th and total offense, which isn't great. But Denver is 224th. So I got one team to can't score or guard anybody. I'm willing to lay the six points on a long road trip on a Friday night. Bring that one home to Mama. Go big tonight at Sizzler. In my opinion, let's go, baby laid the six Do you bet racing Daytona 500 this weekend? He went to race. I would have no idea paid any attention. Who should? I bet? Give it to me. Denny Hamlin is your clubhouse favorite? And your favorite is plus 800 on the Moneyline. This is why I did racing even in golf, which is a similar betting style. One dude against the field. You're not finding plus 800 as the favorite Bryson Day..

"Level and Kevin Lee and plenty of ground to cover tonight. We've talked Pacers We've got college hoops and certainly much of the show devoted to the NFL playoffs and colts after losing in the wild card round today, Buffalo 27 2 24, the dean off Colts beat writers Mike Chapel from fox 59 dot com. He's joining us today. It's always going to visit with your chap. That's one of the reasons I fell on these shows so I can catch up with my friends. Tell me what your takeaway was from this game and the ultimate results. Probably the what might have been what should have been It's what it's one thing that oh, to lose in the playoffs or losing again. But when you walked away thinking, boy We let one really, really get away and against us, you know, arguably the best team in the sea right now. Second best team on this team. And it was just right there, and it coach didn't have to play perfect. By any stretch, but the mistakes they made two for five and in the red zone and in things like a 456 dropped passes. Amoako, Toray jumping outside on fourth and three when that's exactly what they're trying to get you to You just It's just too hard to win in the playoffs on the road. And it's really hard when you when you put so many of your own obstacles in your in your way. I fear it's one thing to second guess fourth down calls. I think you could always debate those a little bit, but I fear for whoever told Frank right to throw the challenge flag. On the fumble or non fumble because we saw one replay and it was pretty obvious, so that's a waste of time out there. You could have used at the end of the game. Yeah, That's one word. It's you that gives you got that. Then you're pouring over the middle of field instead of trying to force us off the sidelines. And he sort of indicated that was a bad talent. I'm well, awas, and it's one that they, you know, he sort of said that they made too quickly. They should have waited, but their initial reaction was so positive that it was a fumble. And it wasn't uh, it's things like in in in in the going for its source and four To the first half. I kind of I tweet there during that drive. When I got down there, I said, this is 40 on territory unless there's a negative play like on third down, and when you go minus three on third down and all of a sudden, it's fourth and four You know, I I understand you're going up like river. Today is a chance Go up 17 to sell on the road. And if he doesn't you know he misses humans with Michael Pittman. By what? Six inches. Your soft hands. You know, it's one of those work if it doesn't work through something else, me being old school conservative more than them that aggressive I might have taken the point after Minus four for the minus three by Taylor, But that's what that's what and it's. That's the good and the bad about the NFL. Is it That lady you open to all the second guessing, And when it works, it's great. And you're great Play caller and your your innovative and bull. You're an electrolytic charged works. And when it doesn't you pay the price way. We've seen it both ways with Franken. Doing things and the players love it, but they bought into it. You know, you kicked the extra point. And then there's an outside and you pull points off for that. There's just one point But, yeah, it's just all the things to come together as we is when it's not, But it doesn't work. Do something else. Like you. Asked why I mentioned just off the top is it was right there that this was 27 24. Boy change a couple of plays on this, and the other one is greater Buffalo played in Josh Allen's a real deal. That game was right there for him. We'll get back to some other things. Maybe if we have time in a moment, but whatever one's going to talk about, we're all quarterbacks centric. What's your best guess is Philip Rivers, the quarterback of this team, and I know that's unfair to death. But we're in the opinion business. So what do you think? My best guess is yes in everybody wants a better option. Tell me what you better action is. What's your plan? What's your plan? B? Yes, it's gonna be seized. 39 turns 40 next. Whatever it is December, and he's his best days are behind him. Media star. But but what? You're not in any position to move up to the draft to get a guy with that, really, really mortgaging the future. And you know the Shawn Watson. Really? You really think Houston's gonna treat first thing you think of that trade and then inside the division? Really? Yeah, there was a chance to get like a Matthew Stafford. Where it wouldn't just go crazy with with what it cost you go for it. But until I know what a better plane B is, he's your best option is going to touch the 25 million. I don't know if he'll push you the 30. I don't know. But I, of all the things that happened today. He's the reason they lost. No, no. So I thought I'd give it and there were some some Pickup stored in this season. You know, Cleveland, Jacksonville and all that. But just about every quarterback has those He liked, like one day I will agree with Frank right about is that rivers exceeded expectations. He did. And to go 11 5. And be, you know, having the ball in your hands within the last two minutes and all that. I don't know what else you really anticipated. Be the possibility so I unless there's a just a major drop off between now and next August. He's playing in another winning level. On again. I'm more than willing to listen to playing. B if somebody's got a reasonable plan B, But I don't know what's that What? What That might be. It's not Jacob Eason is not good for Jacoby. Percent, so, you know Give me the nationals are going to say Carson Wentz, but that the national meeting is our invention. Carson Wentz. I know. Does he? Look, he looks broken to me. He just does. Yeah. Yeah. So it in Well, that that will be the heavy argument. You're right, Carson Winter will be I'd have to look into the financial ramifications. I know what we would leave Philly in a bad way that maybe they can't do it. I wanted to keep in mind to it. Is the camps not going up this year? It's gonna It's gonna paper often open and the culture of gets, um they've probably got 89 10. Following players to worry about, you know, rivers, percent T y Hilton, Justin Houston. Danika Lottery. Uh, Marlon Mack, Molly Cooker on and as Xavier Rhodes. So they've got Some major issues to warn about. So the court of the quarterbacks the first one, you've got to figure out what you're doing. Because that that just you're not. You're not gonna put a rookie unclear, but if he should be in a second guy, a rookie In there. Put the playoffs. You might I just don't see that so Carson wins, that we're gonna have to hear that for quite a while. But a Zeiss sit here again right now. Still a purpose is your best option. Not. Maybe not the idea you got you want it all. But I didn't keep your best option. Unless again. Oh, our planet's until you tell me what you're better. What Plan B is T Y Hilton chances that it makes sense for both parties to return? Well, at the right price. I thought, you know, there were a few shots today. And you know all that. I thought he had a good enough December to where you saw still. But it can be good enough now. What's a reasonable price? I mean, he's not going to get O top 10 months that maybe he thought he might get with a big year. But you know it. Culture price. I wouldn't walk away from that. I think he white might come back here. Along..

"The ESPN APP and Sirius XM Channel 80 anthem against us by to hang out with us. They're here. Thanks to the Goodyear Hotline. It's using one of the best weekends and football and we're gonna get a little extra when it comes to wild card weekend in the NFL, But now it's our turn to make sure to put some more money in your pocket. Monday rolls along. We'd like to call it better as this. Wanna make some money this weekend. It's time for five game Friday Dream. Six games three on Saturday three on Sunday in the infant Simmons and yours truly Freddie Coleman would do our best to put some more money in your pocket. When Monday rolls around. We kick it off with the coat at the bills that the first game side one of five Eastern time My growth. ESPN Coast report on Freddie Fitzsimmons said that D love Indianapolis is going to be huge. Everybody knows about. Justin uses Justin Houston buried there. But the addition of the force bunker was incredible. Christian Chris Brown general manager Looks like a genius. Forgiving him with that first round pick, and but there comes here not and a half sacks, the Nikolai tree lined up next to him a seven a half sex, So I think that's probably the most underrated part of what the Colts have on their roster right now. On the other side, Marcela, we jacked the ESPN Bills reporter also in Freddie Fitzsimmons, he says Indianapolis gives Buffalo the biggest challenge. So far, it hasn't had to use his legs as much and it kind of little defects. Sleep. I really think he's got a point right now where you can just kind of hope to contain him. But ultimately, I don't think you're stopping Josh Alan and As far as the team's on buffalo side of the bracket. Right now, you've got Indy probably has the best chance there, especially with that defensive line up front. It looks like the path of least resistance runs through Buffalo side of Hey, if she playoff bracket All right here. Fitzsimmons Colter, Bill 70 versus the second See? Who do you like him? Why man outdoors and that weather Don't team traveling. It's one of my favorite games of the weekend. Give me the bills minus the six. I'll bite down to 60 and I love the bills in this game. I would love to think that Philip Rivers can function in the cold weather, but he has not had any success in previous years, playing in temperatures underneath 32 degrees in those games, he has one in five in his playoff history. That's way too much for me. The coastal fight the buffalo Bills, but in the cold in the sleep, potentially in the slush. I like Josh on the bills the advance and get to divisional playoff weekend. I'm with you. I'm taking the bills on that one. Ravens that Titan's many people leave this.

"Ladies, we go back to the Goodyear Hotline. Where Kelly Olynyk. The Miami Heat. Had a heck of a night. Tonight. 19 points. Eight boards on seven of nine shooting also had five from beyond the arc is the heat Just absolutely pumped? Okay. See 1 18 to 19. Kelly returns to the ESPN radio on Kelly. Thanks for your time, man. Congratulations on one heck of an evening tonight. What does this make this quick turnaround just to describe this feeling as toe You go from the NBA Finals in the bubble and Bam, you're back at it again. What's it's been like for you. It's been different, obviously is different than any seasons have you ever had, you know, going to the finals and having basically no six weeks off their back in training camp? Now you Hey, didn't even get to take a nap. You know you're just like anyone on your way to the next season, So it's It's been a little rush, but trying to get her feet under us now and kind of pick up where we left off. Hell, you had a chance to enter the starting lineup tonight. I was wondering from your perspective to seeing how versatile and how multiple this team is. How do you feel like you kind of in that Swiss Army knife type role could really flourish within this team. Yeah. I mean, we got a lot of depth on this team. You know, a lot of guys who can play a lot of guys tribute. So, um, Now you've seen it. I think we have six different starting lineups in the first six games. Um, you know, but for me out there It is about complimenting the other guys, you know, making sure Bam and Jimmy have space to operate and be themselves and then you know, just kind of space the floor and make it tough. I love it. I'll make my home in Dallas, Texas, and Luca was talking about how they didn't get to the finals, right. But he's kind of playing himself back into shape because he had to take a rest after the season. Do your legs feel right now, considering that you guys did go to the finals And as you mentioned, you kind of feeling your way back into this thing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, you know when the When the season got shut down in March, you couldn't stop working out. You have to continue working out with the whole time because you never knew what I was gonna start up again instead of the next day. So you kind of never got a break, so we kind of went Whatever it was like. 13 months straight. Um, you know all the way through the finals. Then you get six weeks off in their back in training camps again. So you had to take a rest, You know, not only physically but mentally ill. Just get away from the game a bit so Not to come back. Um You know that quick. It's going to take a little time and you had a couple new pieces together. You're just kind of trying to build that chemistry and Make it make it work. Tell you have had a chance to check out some of your YouTube videos with the kills kitchen. I'm wondering how much fun is that been for you to be able to, you know, go on the road and do some of these restaurant reviews. I know that life on the road is obviously different under the circumstances of the pandemic this year, But is that something that You know, you kind of enjoyed being able to give people a taste of the light the life you're living out on the road this year. Yeah, definitely. I mean, obviously on the road this year. It's a little different. Those only you know, some approved restaurants when you get outside. No. But depending on what city you're in, outside, probably isn't the best option and you know on the East Coast bid West. But you know, it's it's fun. You know, I love the kitchen. I love cooking. I love food and it's big sister and now it's been awesome toe share that and, um, get a lot of feedback on what other people like it when other people have found and you kind of just grow and So your palate on diversify. Love it. If you could see me right now, you you would understand. I also love food, but you're in shape. I'm not killing. Congratulations. Hell of a night, man will talk to you soon. Thanks, buddy. You say you guys take care? Kelly Olynyk here on the Goodyear Hotline is after the heat destroyed. Okay. See 1, 18 and 19 heck of a night for him. 19 and eight on seven of nine from the floor recording counting on me and Fitz Simmons, Now back to the Goodyear Highline Women with Mike Wells. Now we're now joins us here on ESPN Radio preview. The cult's Like that. Thank you. So much for your patience, man. What is the most underrated aspect of this cold squad? Because 11 win playoff team, I don't think a whole lot of people. Throughout the around the country were really paying much attention to this playoff squad. The first law and we're talking about food. And the last time I was on with last time I was on with you. I was on my way to Columbus for the Memorial Golf tournament. And you told me to go to all these restaurants and drop your name. Got zero so cups because of you. In fact, people proud when I mentioned your name and Columbus, Ohio, man I didn't say mentioned my name. I said Go there. I didn't say you're gonna get preferential treatment notes. Yeah, I got I got nothing out of it Did me no good, but I still ate good, So it's okay. Back back back back to your question. I was going to say Jonathan Taylor in the running game. My right talks about Philip Rivers, T Y Hilton, and you know the tight end on the Colts roster, but the fact that Jonathan Taylor ran for a franchise record. 253 yards against that pitiful Jacksonville Jaguars on week. 17. I can't say that anymore, but I will say the interior part of the defense of life. Everybody knows about Justin uses Justin Houston. Very clear. But the addition of the force Bucker was incredible. Chris Chris Balance general manager Looks like a genius. Given over that first round pick, and but there comes here 9.5 sacks, the Nikolai tree lined up next to him. Seven a half sex, So I think that's probably the most underrated part of what the Colts have on their roster right now. Mike. What's working for Jonathon Taylor? This last month doesn't seem like he slowed down at a time where other rookies on this team struggled as of late means averaging just over 86 yards rushing per per game, and we saw how crazy was in the finale yesterday. How much are they going to lean on him in the postseason? Well, when you brought the face, they bought a excuse me a buffalo team that put up 56 points just today. 44 against Seattle earlier this season, beat the Steelers. They've got it. They've got to find a way to keep Josh Alan, and that offense on the sideline and it's Jonathan Taylor. And I know Anthony Castaldo. Starting that tackle was out right now corrected season but the closer one of the best offense of lines In the NFL. You know, Frank Reich said. The best, probably today, he said. A running game travels on the road, and that's what the culture going to need is gonna be cold in Buffalo, But I mean, here in the Midwest, Courtney you know what? Madison, Wisconsin. That's what Jonathan Taylor that's type of weather that doubts and Taylor ran and during his career with the Badger, so it's a perfect opportunity. This confidence, Dr Turner Last six games 741 yards rushing in the less last six games of for Jonathan Taylor heading into the playoffs. It should be a dandy coming up in while Carter weekend, Mike, we appreciate it again. Don't use my name. I'm just giving you the name of the spot to go to One minute I forget your name. Some guy hang up, so don't worry about it. You're the best but enjoy it. Safe travels will talk to you soon, man. Thank you so much. Okay, everybody see, but Bagwell is here with us. Follow him on Twitter at Mike Wells, NFL for all Intel. When it comes to the Colts recorded Cronin on me and Fitz Simmons made has been a busy half hour so far. Now we're number two. Freddie Coleman still on vacay. Not good for him. Great for him Coming up next. The caloric intake of one blumen onion bite at the Outback Bowl. I'm guessing it has a common it. We'll see a cold Cuba could still standing after devouring an entire bloomin onion on national TV, while Comey Outback Bowl here for us at ESPN, Radio Coke,.

NFL Rumors Mailbag: Kyler Murray, Justin Houston Trade

"Yeah. What this is shocking to me in the sense that when we were having this discussion about quarterback musical chairs in the fall. My thought had always been the Jags are going to draft a quarterback. And it still seems to me like the more prudent direction here is for them to move up for Golic Hoskins or Murray rather than giving Nick foles twenty million dollars a year when you're already over the cap, it just I just don't understand what if the answer is both. And what I mean by this is that Dave Gettleman came out and said the sin. I think this has the opportunity to be very dumb trend around the league. But did other came out and said, we'll work was the Kansas City mom's it's stupid way to think about which is adding a veteran die on a legitimate contract. And then the guy learning behind him. Now, I don't think that them bring in foles precludes them from taking quarterback in the first two rounds. I don't know if they bring in foles, obviously at a number like twenty they're not gonna trade up into the top five, but they could still draft a a significant future starter quarterback type guy. Now, I think is a couple of things we need to to sort of peel back on with the Kansas City model first of all not everybody's gonna be Patrick Mahomes. Second of all the infrastructure in Kansas City was so remarkably good perfect. They basically structure had Nagy and and read working with Smith and they assigned Mike kaffa to Patrick Mahomes. And so you. Had not only Mahomes working with Alex Smith every day working with read in in meetings. But also anytime he needed something explained to him. He basically had the quarterbacks coach at his disposal. The infrastructure and other places is not going to be like that. There aren't three really smart or four because out include Eric b enemy in that. There are not four really smart innovators in thirty one of the other teams in this league. So if you're going to try the Kansas City, Molly better have Kansas City coaches, and you'd better have talent like Patrick Mahomes need better have a leader like Alex Smith. I just think that was a unicorn if you want to replicate a good luck. It does not make sense to me to allocate your resources in that way. If you're going to sign Nick foles, the idea of drafting a quarterback in the first two rounds, you are team that is built to win at this very moment. That's why you're signing foles using a high level draft pick on a quarterback while also burning twenty million bucks on your starter that I I have no idea. Why teams think that's a good? It's the same thing. The cardinals last year paying Sam Bradford what they did. Wall dressing. Josh Rosen like just put him in just put him in. I it's Mahomes is such a different case in that team was on such a different part of where they wanted to go in their schedule. The Jacksonville Jaguars are there. But why would you tr what would you also draft the guy? I just don't understand that at all. I don't know teams plan specifically. But there are a lot of teams don't know what they're doing. No. There are a lot of towns lie they're doing I don't know if anybody's looked into the last the NFL's celebrating one hundred years and one of the Constance is like my field of dreams speech. The only constant is a lot of teams and have no idea what they're doing my favorite part about. This is gonna be what happens with the offensive line market the players in the pass rushing market or good enough that even with those top four guys off giving Dante Fowler big deal or Trey flowers Iansa. There are players I like in that group more than others. But I'm still okay. With a guy like trae flowers. Getting paid. But it's going to be amazing when the guy Daryl Williams is off the board and then Roger Sappho than teams like, well, we're the Donovan Smith winners five years sixty million.

Nick Foles Alex Smith Patrick Mahomes Kansas City Jags Dave Gettleman Mahomes Trae Flowers Daryl Williams Jacksonville Jaguars Golic Hoskins Donovan Smith Cardinals Dante Fowler Sam Bradford Josh Rosen NFL Eric B Roger Sappho Iansa
