New Memphis police will have to delay the release of additional footage from Tyree Nichols beating that turned deadly, a judge ordering that delay after an attorney challenge for one of the former officers charged in his death. Women and young people were most affected by mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety during the height of the COVID pandemic. That's according to a University of Washington health study that aims to give governments a better idea of how to prepare for the next major event. What exactly conservatism means these days depends largely on who you ask. It meant one thing to Reagan Republicans and something quite different for Trump Republicans and then there's Florida governor Ron DeSantis who appears to be positioning himself for a presidential run. Michael schur is taking a closer look for The Washington Post and spoke with northwest news radios Jeff podol. Looks like desantis is reimagining what conservatism means. I think that's right. He is pushing beyond where Trump pushed the party when he took the presidency in 2016. Now, historically conservatives have talked of themselves as limited government conservatives. They've said they do not want government power interfering in the free markets. The desantis approaches essentially been to say, I am still limited government conservative. I want low taxes, et cetera. But there's an emergency going on right now. And that is that what he describes as sort of woke liberal institutions in the private sector, including corporations, education institutions, the media are voicing their views into the public sphere. And as a result, extraordinary government action is required. And that is how he is justified, you know, punishing the Disney corporation, for instance, for opposing one of his education policies in Florida, it's how he's justified passing a law in Florida that bans social media companies from being able to de platform candidates for office in that state for any reason, no matter what those candidates do. It's the reason he is pushing for changes to the legal standards under which defamation cases can be brought against the media. And it's also the reason he went after cruise ships after the height of the COVID outbreak when they tried to institute in their own, on their own ships, vaccine mandates, hoping to entice more people to come back on cruises. He passed a law in Florida that said, even private businesses can not do that. It would be against the law. I mean, this is very much against that old Reagan idea of the government is not the solution to our problem government is the problem. It isn't it contrasts pretty sharply with positions desantis to just a few years ago. I mean, when there was a debate over net neutrality back in 2017, he was very clear that he did not want the government regulating the Internet. He said, if you allow one politician to impose his ideas and the private sector of the year, you don't know what's going to happen when the next person gets elected. He was very critical of Barack Obama for mandating as a part of ObamaCare that private hospitals, including Catholic institutions, provided abortion services saying that was just overreach of the government. It shouldn't be something the government should be involved in. And he's faced some pushback from other potential 2024 candidates and he's not declared for president, but sure looks like he's running the governor of New Hampshire, Chris sununu has been very critical of some of these desantis moves, former vice president Mike Pence is also sort of edging towards an announcement has also said he disagrees with what desantis did with Disney. That is Michael Shearer taking a closer look from The Washington Post with our Jeff poacher. "We thank you for joining us Bill O'Neill at the editor's desk with Kim shepherd I'm Rick van seiss. President Joe Biden meeting with the German Chancellor today to talk about the strategy in Ukraine and other global issues. ABC's Justin Finch is on the northwest news line. And The White House has said aid for Ukraine would be a priority during this visit. What kind of assistance are they talking about? Well, that's right, this meeting comes just as The Pentagon announced another $400 million in new military aid from the U.S. to Ukraine. This would be additional ammunition for those high mobility artillery rocket systems or a high Mars. Munitions, as well as equipment to support vehicle maintenance and repair. What top of mind right now for the west, the U.S. NATO and the course for Ukraine is getting ready for a spray cover fed sieve, all the ground, Russia is making some advanced, especially in the 80s in areas like Bach boot, the west, and Ukraine hoping to fight their back, although it is calmed down to the straight by straight battles that Russia is engaging with Ukrainian troops in all the ground. So a major concern there. The president, thanking the Germany, the Chancellor Olaf Schultz for his strong and steady leadership on this topic he thanked Germany for their continued military support, but also their humanitarian support about food, health, heating, clothing, all things to those people needed as they left Ukraine for safer environments there. Schultz had Biden saying they will stick with Ukraine until the very end. So really underscoring their support for that fight with Russia, which again has now bought a year old. The U.S. already allocated more than $30 billion in aid to support Ukraine over the past year, Kim. Yeah, and not just financial support, the U.S. also offering knowledge as support with training. I guess they've been working with the Ukrainian military on exercises at the base in Germany. That's right. That's the ongoing issue as a continue to sit more weapons over. You just can't drop a tag on the battleground and say here are the keys. These troops have to be trailed on how to use these weapons effectively. And all the way developed innovations all their own to be very swift and fast. Fights with Russia. Now, another challenge that will be on the leader's agenda today, the relationships with China. Does Germany have the same kind of strained relationship the U.S. does? Not so much as strain, but you're very much concerned with the west. NATO very much watching closely what is happening with China in these deepest and tides to countries like Russia and Iran. And the president has not ruled out the use of sanctions if it becomes to China supplying that military aid. However, The White House has said time and time again, they have not seen evidence yet that lethal military aid has come from China to Russia, but they do believe it's not off the table just yet. And when we're thinking about all the complexities with all these relationships, I just think about the fact that we had two Americans and a Russian cosmonaut just blast off to the International Space Station this week. There are still ties even in this sort of Cold War type relationship that we're developing. And those small ties, I would say now the so much more than perhaps they have in recent years because it shows there are spaces and causes under which these countries that have so much distance between them on so many points can find common ground, you know, one big concern was put into the seeing a few weeks ago that they would temporarily pause their involvement and that new start nuclear treaty, these are things that The White House has said they can't afford to lose Russia on. So diplomacy is one of the many ways that you're trying to maintain what little ties they have to Russia and the east. ABC's Justin Finch on the northwest news line. Cliff cawthon with habitat for humanity favors the amendment as a way. To allow our young people to be able to buy homes in the future, to be able to fight stability. Since 1968, the state has occasionally amended the constitution to allow corporate investments prior beneficiaries include public pension or retirement funds, and funds held in trust for those with developmental disabilities. Much of the funding that goes to department of fish and wildlife to support environmental and conservation programs and work with wildlife management and habitat protections go directly to that account from the sale of these items. Democrat Jamie Peterson of Seattle says this bill would not undermine a person's right to bear arms.
