"Now the Vikings the Minnesota Vikings got embarrassed by the the Indianapolis Colts 28 to 11:00 and Kirk Cousins had three interceptions, you know, I watched the film and the first interception was really bad is a bad throw off. In a double coverage a bad decision just not a good play but a second and third interceptions were just I don't think his fault or at least we're not really ones. You can hold against him. We're dead interception. Number two was on a Hail Mary before half-time you check the ball deep you hope somebody on your team comes down with it. The other team caught it that's not really a bad decision. That's just a just play that happens off and his third interception was tipped. So I truly believe that these stats make Kirk Cousins appear worse than he really is and I think the Vikings have much bigger problems Kirk Cousins in my opinion. Yeah. Another thing went on to Washington football team lost to the Arizona Cardinals 3215. This is good news. Maybe I'm not sure I would have predicted going into this game that the struggles for Washington on offense. They scored fifteen points at the end of game. I would have figured that their struggles on offense were due to Accuracy being the problem for their quarterback Dwayne Haskins now that was not the case. So again, maybe that's good. Maybe the other issues or even more concerning. I don't know timing. They have dropped pass that were a problem Dwayne Haskins kept getting hit as he threw there was some miscommunication with his receivers like there were a lot of problems going on for the Washington football team on stage. They have a lot of things need to work on be better Logan Thomas. They're tight end could have had a better day, but there's no shame in Washington. I mean, they lost to a better team, so I don't know that that's entirely off the worst thing ever, but there are definitely a lot of little things for Washington and Dwayne Haskins to clean up moving forward as a year goes on, but I'm not ready to bail completely on Washington. I mean, I'm not they're not going to be an incredible team thought they were but I'm excited to continue to watch growth as the year goes on for the Washington football team Gardner Minshew almost had a really cool come back against Tennessee dead. The Titans beat the Jaguars 3330 the Titans are up 24 to 10 at halftime. And then Gardner Minshew battled back and had the game tied 32-30 near the end of game. I got home..

"Now the Raiders backup. Jameis Winston number one overall. He's a backup Matthew Number one overall. He's been a career disappointment had a career of disappointment the poor guy Matthew Stafford still makes mistakes that are boneheaded and just awful and when you look at the context of Matt Ryan, he was drafted number three overall how many other top five picks just fail at quarterback? You realize Matt Ryan deserves some appreciation not to mention. Here are some other first-round quarterbacks recently have not done very well Paxton Lynch Johnny Manziel EJ Manuel Jake Locker Christian Ponder Brandon Weeden, Blaine Gabbert. The user later picks. It probably went to better teams. I really strongly believe that despite the connection too too embarrassing, you know blown leads. Matt Ryan has been a massive success in a position where most people fail. Never ever forget that never ever forget the context that you can compare Matt Ryan two. And in this game on Sunday against Dallas. I don't think Matt Ryan did anything horribly bad. He's just gotta lead to really didn't deserve and Dallas found a way to win that game. I want to end this still with saying Matt Ryan despite his connection to these two bulbs blown leads Matt Ryan deserves a lot of respect, especially when you consider how many quarterbacks did I just list there were drafted in the top five or in the first round that didn't make it and you go I guess when you consider that page Ryan did pretty well in a position where most people fail All right, guys, I'm going to take a short break when a return next up. We'll talk about the Raiders and the Saints Monday Night Football from last night. Justin Herbert's first start with a ridiculous crazy night. That was crazy time. We'll talk about Justin Herbert lot of fun there later. We'll talk about more NFL week 2 we'll talk about Gardner Minshew Tom Brady Mitchell trubisky Dwayne Haskins Kirk Cousins. Then at the end of show, Justin fields to some degree called me out. Well fun with that lot of stuff. I've had.

"Oh my goodness. Good morning. afternoon. Whatever it is for you. I hope you're having a fantastic day. My name is Zach shomler. This is strong opinion Sports episode 283. I've got a massive massive episode for you guys. Today. We're going to talk about Justin Herbert his first start. I'm going to show a lot of film on that really proud of it will talk about the Cowboys crazy win. We'll talk about the Patriots Seahawks game. My favorite game in a long long time Mitchell trubisky Dwayne Haskins the Vikings Gardner Minshew. I mean the second week of NFL season Jose goes on and there so many things to talk about well and this show by talking about the Ohio State quarterback Justin fields, and I want to say, you know, it is in my plan at some point this week to talk about Josh Allen and Sam. Darnold. I've got a lot of questions about Sam. Darnold. What is going on with the Jets? I can't figure it out. I've got a lot of things I need to dive into and really get off. By watching tape and then Josh Allen my buddy Brett. Kollmann texted me was a couple of days ago yesterday Sunday. Maybe Brett text me goes dude. You gotta watch Josh Allen. He's unbelievably good and so I took a dive into the film and figure out what's going on with the Bills quarterback. That's not today that's coming at some point later this week. I also want to apologize. I was planning on recording this episode on Monday morning. And then on Sunday night, I became aware of the fact that there's this whole group of people that I've never properly had enough empathy for I got my grain. I don't know if you've ever had a migraine before I got one and it just really took me out of commission for a little while. I couldn't do anything my head was just throbbing. I just never had never experienced anything like it. I just I was completely useless for a while and you know people that deal with migraines consistently..
The story of Trevor Lawrence's life-changing summer
"So we just discussed how Trevor Lawrence is influence has been growing this off season I taking on issues of public health and racial inequality. But last month. The very thing that gives Trevor Lawrence his enormous Megaphone College football was put in jeopardy as players in conferences. Having. These discussions about canceling the season. What role in those discussions did Trevor Lawrence play. It was a Sunday night early August enduring. Trevor. Together again. There at travers fiancee's apartment and rumours are starting to pick up steam that some of the biggest most powerful conferences in college football the Big Ten PAC twelve that they're seriously considering, postponing their fall season, and this is coming at the end of a week. When of PAC twelve players have released a statement on the Players Tribune using the Hashtag we are united. And they've threatened to out fall CAM even opt out of games unless the conference mixed their demands for fair treatment and safety regulations and less the conference addresses concerns over racial justice, and meanwhile on a nearly parallel track, you have players the cost, the country, trevor, and fluted tweeting the Hashtag. We want to wait to express their desire to keep the seasonal live. So, in the Sunday night when it feels like college ball is teetering, it's actually dairying who decides to reach out to Dylan bowls. One of the players the Pactel's we are United Movement because endearing mine Houston gain. If we all join together the players in the we are united movement and the players in the we want to play movement that would be undeniably powerful for players who don't have concrete power who don't have a real seat at the table at least not yet their collective voice with the really hard to ignore because truly. So many of these fires want the same thing they want to play football this fall, they just want to do it in a safe responsible way. Dylan Daring, trevor they get on a three way facetime called a hash all this out to make sure they're all on the same page and that very quickly evolves into a zoom call with a dozen or so some of the biggest names in college football right Justin fields chew behind nausea. Harris And matter of thirty minutes, they agree to roll out a list of demands from this new fused Mecca Movement. It was amazing. How quickly we all got on the same page put something together I feel like the majority was getting spoken for. And we were like, Hey, we WANNA play. We want it to be safe but we do to take a watt mandated and universal safety procedures for Covid nineteen and they want to form players association. And it pretty much the stroke of midnight. These players, Tweeden Unison. But it's trevor naturally whose tweet is hurt the loudest he's re tweeted some fifteen thousand times including one quote tweet from President Donald Trump, and it's just a few days later actually that someone from the White House reaches out to Amanda Lawrence Trevor Lines mom letting her know that the president would like to get in touch with trevor. So hold on. So he has the president of the United States listening to him. Now let alone all of his peers across college football. What was that conversation with Donald Trump? Like? You know I would have loved to be a fly on whatever wall in whichever room that phone call took place the president has said really that trevor just reiterated his desire to play this season but trevor for his part hasn't divulged too much about that phone call. Conversation it was good I mean we just talked about kind of the whole we talked about that. We WanNA play like how's it going? How's it looking for the season and? president trump was just saying, yeah, I think our country needs college football and. then. Some small talk. Yes. We a little bit about what was going on in my life and vice versa. So that was pretty much the conversation though trevor is twenty years old the president of the United States wanted to speak to him. That is remarkable crazy. No matter which way you cut it. So. Let's recap here Halley Grossman because since March Trevor, Lawrence Age Twenty has faced pressure to help mitigate a global pandemic fight racism save the College football season display a level of political savvy and or gamesmanship that is obviously well beyond his years. So what else can you possibly be asked to do at this point? I mean look putting your stamp of approval which he's done on a list of demands that includes creating players. Association is a big deal. That's a radical way to reimagined that amateurism model that governs. College football right now but I think what this summer has shown is that trevor doesn't plan to quiet down you just a few days ago a whole lot of guys that original zoom call we talked about reconvened because they revealing again from a police shooting of a black man again, and so in the days after Jacob, Blake was shot. Trevor and Darien and Dylan, and a whole host of others talked once again to hammer out ways to help to draw attention to the issue and hopefully bring change. Trevor Lawrence football season is starting tomorrow and if all goes according to plan. He's GonNa win the heisman before becoming the first overall pick in next year's NFL draft teams have been salivating over his talent. There have been rumors that teams might even want to tank for Trevor Lawrence this season. So the question really that is, why is he even putting himself out there like this? Why even play the season? I mean that is the question, right? We have seen plenty a high profile opt-outs this season jomar chase at Lsu. Mike Parsons at Penn State today. Oregon. These are first round top ten NFL draft guys but no one literally nobody has less to lose by not playing the twenty twenty football season than Trevor Lawrence. are in a player having a job borough like. Or I don't know an asteroid hitting the earth, his Cossacks to go number one overall are safe, and at the same time, no one has less to gain by paddling the status quo or shaking up the current system than trevor does this system works just fine for him? He is a young white man. He's a young white quarterback, and so I asked Amanda, his mother that seems washing. Why? Why do all this? I put himself out there and she said something interesting she said look. there. are players out there who do need to even if trevor doesn't and there are people out there for whom the status quo and the current system don't work even if it works for him and he understands that now probably better than he ever has and he just wants to help. That's really it know told me one of his goals for the senior only meeting because he wanted everyone to understand that unless everyone is good no one is good and trevor, his best friend took that to heart. Of the day, there's so much division in our country. Just word of some people that WanNa see people together, WanNa see people love each other and I think that's where a lot of the things I do. It stems from that just wanted to see people happy together not divided. With all this pressure now from all of these different places in our country. Landing Atop. Trevor Lawrence's shoulders. What are you personally expect from him when the season starts? Because of the ways in which Trevor Lawrence has stepped onto center stage this summer it's almost easy to forget what it is. That gives him that stage in the first place, he is extremely good at his job. Term Lawrence is an excellent quarterback. Making predictions in two, thousand, twenty, hundred, probably a fools errand. But tomorrow, there's football comes we'll pay wake forest, and if clemson continues to play if they and the ACC and the big twelve and sec are able to play a full season, don't be surprised to see Trevor Lawrence back on the national championship stage. Don't be surprised to see Trevor Lifting the national championship trophy and along the way don't be surprised to see trevor continuing to speak out and perhaps that's one of the safest predictions you can make in twenty twenty. Life to be reflection of what I say and what I believe I've been thinking about everything that's going on and I think there has been some some moments where I had to say some things because it's just the right thing to do and it's time really is just how I live my life I want it to reflect what I say. I. Would always be the same person I want to be consisted. Eliot Grossman. Thank you for jumping on stage with. US. Thank you so much for having me. Pablo.

"Is kind of interesting because a west little more wide open than people thought going into this bubble. So Lakers, in Portland, I'm going to go the Lakers but keep an eye on Poland. Okay. They are on a Rudd Damian Lillard is the MVP of the bubble like they are on a tear and Damian. Lillard and Lash in saying this last year Damian Lillard is a big time player. In baytown games he carries a team dame time is not time to mess with. Damian Lillard is the real fricken deal. And he is going to show up against the Lakers now. Do I think the I don't think Poland has noth- guys to guard with the Lakers have I think I do think the Portland does win a game maybe two in this series depending on what happens. So I don't think a Lakers gopher sweep I mean they have not looked the grid sense they've been back in the bubble. I just don't see pulling way the series by don't see Lakers sweeping then in the first round next the clippers in the mavericks. This is interesting as well. I think that the Mavericks are very underrated team to not a lot of people again are talking about you've Luca and Chris Porzingis okay, too big time players for that team and great pieces around them. Like their chances I don't think they're going to pull it off though I think end the rest that clippers team is going to be jest fine against the Mavericks. Maybe, they marriage. Win Game. I think the man was a winning game maybe to again but I do think clippers win the series no problem. The next series Denver versus the Utah Jazz going into this Milan again, I know Denver or one game one but I was going to go denver. I love the direction des Denver's heading in they have a lot of great young pieces great center. In Nikola Jokic. Again. You have great pieces Michael Porter Jr... Like Bulbul as well. Jamal Murray they had great pieces around them. When you look at Utah. Right now Mike Conley is not there. He's out of the bubble due to the birth of his child. And so is dawn Mitchell's team to really carry the load And in Game One, he did it just wasn't enough. Was Fifty seven points and you still lose. It's kind of hard to really man what can I do? I liked the way Denver is build a takedown Utah. I got the series going Denver four to one. File series Houston. Versus Oklahoma. City. Do Not Sleep on Oklahoma City I think they actually have a lot of pieces to challenge Houston and maybe even force a game seven. Yes. Russ and hearted versus their old team versus the team that has traded away both of them to the rockets. Are. Bleed I bleed it was hard and was signed by the rockets excuse me. But they traded away rust the rockets. So both these guys playing together against their old team. Chris. Paul playing against his old team in Houston. I do think though Houston will be fine. They don't really I as far as their size don't have a lot of size take on Steve Adams. Down low but at the end I, think that the speed will show up I. Think again. Is a great story with what they did with I honestly do not have making the playoffs this year I. Felt like going to year. I'm like I. Mean I felt there was rebuilding especially with Chris Paul but now they got draft picks when they traded away Russell Westbrook and got up draft picks as Welford. But in the end just don't see charming when they try to way Paul George to. Just. Don't see. The thunder taking down the rockets maybe they do I. May I don't I'm not I'm not gonNA be surprised if it goes to a game seven. But those are my picks for the first round of the NBA bubble playoffs thou. didst episode of one done radio. "Jonas Shaper of the Baltimore Ravens Righty, by the Baltimore Sun e calls in talk about Ravens and one, it's been light to adjust to his new media lifestyle. And then I talked about the Justin fields petition what it could mean. Even having an effect. College football. And I don't think it will finally. Tug I give my picks for the first round of the NBA playoffs. All that on the show, let's go up. All right. Joining me now, Jones Schaefer, Baltimore Ravens writer for the Baltimore Sun. You can follow us on twitter at Jonas Underscores Shaffer Jonas. Thank you for taking your time to call into one done radio. So everything going on, we know what's happening with the pandemic and for the media I know it's different for you guys what's been like for you guys handling everything right now. Strange Monday will be the first time of the rate of civility since fiscal last season ended. Everything has been virtual on much everything from our couches and our desks. Continue being strange because training camp is usually a place for. Get guys after practice pulled him. Aside, I try to tell their stories and unique way We still think we can do that. But because of the pandemic like mentioned, there's going to be low in person interviews this year right after Kazan's if you WANNA ask John have a question you have to do it over soon call other the ravens just like every other NFL extreme measures to keep their guys saved. I know some other team civilities, Agra orders a swap for a virus. We are just having our temperatures taken I'm not be allowed to silly so it's going to be different coverage but. I understand totally by. Every precaution they his Jewish Mike this. At least not getting a full. Check with a thing. Nose every single day. So couple of years ago I know in the middle of season there was some when before Lamar Jackson even played, there's talks that harbaugh would have been let go. There was no some rumbles of it happening that he played Lamar. Now we have a former MVP Lamar Jackson and coach of the year John Harbaugh. What is it about Harbaugh that? He just there's some coaches that league they just say this is my way we're going to do it, and if you don't fit the system, you know we'll get out. We'll go somewhere else. We'll figure somebody else out but harbaugh showed that's like listen I find whatever is the best pupil my players in the best position to succeed what is about hobble where he's able to find every player's potential. I A willingness to adapt and to be flexible to. Try New things I mean per as credible as last season was. With the Ravens having. NFL's top off and having a good defense by then. You go back and look at that twenty eighteen. It's almost as the president did not more because. Basically midstream that team went from being a typical trump troutbeck pro-style up and joe FLACCO. To one that was. Dominant that had a lot of different zone re concepts a Lotta Kinda college style rpo op stuff, and the Ravens Guts Plastic Guzman they lost just one game over this season second half. For them to completely I jumped ship and go from one kind of another and for really benefit. Team which already had a creaky. I think just spoke to people and and. You know show just how China is a coach. Affleck's one could be even when. I confront some some very, very difficult circumstances. Now you mentioned the Great Defense and obviously the offense best offense in the league, we had last year so they added two key pieces to the offense in. The one piece of defense to the draft. They drafted Pager Queen and J K Dobbins both who I believe are going to have immediate impact on teen. Give me a rookie was not one of those players that will also have impact on the team either offensively or defensively I think if you look at the ball. Starter I'll see them but they really seem to like Maliki Harrison the third round linebacker that they got out of Ohio state is a much bigger God at Queen. He was about four six in the forty when he ran the combine and he's just you know your prototypical strong side. Linebacker, at a I can have him clean lockdown fans for the next four years or so. They can have maybe have brushed the edge. They did a little bit at Ohio state and I just in need some help at linebacker because they has talked last village Josh Pons Breed. See I begin to refine Patrick over the jets. So you can have those as LBJ for the return starter at some of the other guys. Come back I keep really ask good depth was at is. About squawk last year was. All right. So there was obviously pictures and videos of Lamar, Jackson Antonio Brown working out what are the chances that they actually sign him I think the probably not great. There is that relationship with the Ravens have out with Antonio Brown Chester South, Florida cash, and obviously Mar is they broward county guide coach Mark Piece Brown is rockies. Brown is of course. The first round last year. The cousin Antonio Brown up there is that that the family connection there but I think the ravens as good as their locker room as for as. I can will upset whilst you today would be to to handle someone with a Tony Brown's personality. Let's put it. I just think that the Ravens. Probably, don't want to introduce someone with his volatility into what they're trying to. Greedier in his locker room so You know because of the fact that he's been suspended pearly state games, it could be more at none that that's Is separate assault charges because of the fact that you know huge obviously hasn't played anywhere Since we to last year I just think that they're probably hoping that some team you like Seattle Pittsburgh Aby just take take him author hands at that because I don't think the Ravens are are They got these perceiver stuff wonder week fats. But if they can do better just with the guy that had annouce. Now, I do a couple of one kind of. Same sort of so want to actually give you know you're from Baltimore along give you three. Celebrity facts and see basically or false. So if this person was born in Maryland or not. All right I actor or athlete or famous person Michael Phelps. Cure Sauce. Out. I don't know why. Why. Did so? next cure false. Aaron Paul. Off. You are correct. And the last one. Let's find a hard once he pissy. David T. Abercrombie..

"So it's funny to hear this because it doesn't scream of perspective like Chris Godwin shows me his birth certificate when these words come out his mouth because this is not Tom Brady at his peak powers if you really wanted to get into a measurable conversation because it sounds like arm strength Valencia, those things those are tangible. It's like the balls rippin. You weren't alive in NFL when Tom? Brady. Was In this big powers two, thousand, seven, two, thousand, eight years as Randy Moss if he went to practice and Watts Tom Brady, is that the same exact Tom Brady I think you might come up with a different answer an who cares because the team that quarterbacks lose last is their arm strength. Their legs go first then in minds go because I don't feel like preparing I. Don't feel like the next training camp don't feel like going through the process get beat up mentally before your arm strip goes I remember playing with drew bledsoe when he was retired I think it was like forty, seven, forty five at the time and still. Is Oh but then so of course, everybody Roseau. Tall. Planner, Bro the process retire me. So when you're talking about a guy in a honeymoon phase that infatuation phase is hormonal, you gotta respect that everything is beautiful. You don't realize that there's some wards in this situation and he'll come to that realization later but just not yet for more on this, let's bring back our boy Lavar Arrington Lavar you have the issue with God Chris. Trying to pump Tom Brady. First of all, we are state shots out the Penn State we all just on real. So No, I don't have a problem with him. Say What? What he feels. Here's what you guys missed in the in the state. Do you guys did not catch what he did. It was it was very sneaky. It was very subtle. Hear him say at the end of his sound bite? It was a difference. There's a difference. All right now he's not talking about Tom Brady's arm strength. He addressed arm strength earlier on in his whoa what he was addressing what you guys fell to. Go going here is the Oh yeah. Okay go ahead throw it out there. I was making the comparison between how it feels to get a pass from Tom Brady versus getting a pass from Jameis Winston and that's small. Little little part of his quote makes it abundantly clear that Mr Godwin has truly enjoyed getting the ball thrown to him from Tom Brady versus getting number James. Problem with that even young. Bar The thing about y'all Yo, Penn state people you never know what you've got. You know what you got until this you WanNa talk about Chris God when he's a top receiver, the receiver because he ordered back with a top-flight passer when it came to mask yardage about Chris Garmin because we got the tape of Chris Garwin last year and we got the table is Chris. You don't see this like you see James threatened need off his back foot thirty, five yards in between two defenders Tom Brady. He will have to deliver it to you on time and space because what you had last year you took for granted I understand there was some interceptions I get Davos? Turtle. Chris Guy wouldn't take things for granted. That's how I know Chris Zion 'cause you're talking about, Chris Cowan just went from one of the strongest Arms Jamus to one of the weakest arms and top. Can I ask you a question can I ask you a question us. Emma freezing listen. Here's my question on why you you just when you were at Texas when you were at Texas or when you were in Philadelphia when you had the starting defensive line in front of you, right when to as went when the first group went right back. Did, you know the difference between how you were able to make plays versus the plays you able to make when they put the second and third. Absolutely okay. Marcel Marcella. The twos and the three's going against you and drills. Did you know the difference between going against the twos and threes versus when you had to go head to head with the starters bombs? Yes, I do. Yeah, it was it was quite a difference. This is where I am going right now is to say you don't have to be gassing up the truth and the reality of what you experience when you're out there on the football field or in the meeting room you know what it is. You see what it is. You recognize what it is. So we don't have to say here. Chew up passes that to good passes that that James once in through the same. The Same Guy Different Angle. Okay. Same play different angles. Okay. That's all I know. Is this all I know that Chris went knows what he is saying what he's feeling from the caliber player that Tom Brady is new made it very apparent spoke very well, very singly barrier educated and only. All Star we had t shirts source who gives a damn. We'll even basketball coming up. Feel, says he has a much better state of mind as the enters his third season. We'll tell you if we like it nuts yourself is presented by day. Welcome back to speak for yourself. Let's Talk Baker Mayfield who's trying to turn things around after disappointing sophomore season Baker said earlier this off season he was gonna move in silence but then recently called out his critics Megan make sense Baker now beggar switching gears to changing his own mentality. We'll take a list. You know just the past couple of years. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions and not nearly as much assess as I'm used to. So I would say I lost myself. Not Having success, not not finding out what was working I think I tried different ways of trying to have success and I didn't find it being myself getting that Alpha mentality back Twenty twenty it's not been real great Mama mentality arpita Kobe but trying to get that and replicate something similar to what he had to lead these guys. To where we WANNA go. Lavar back with us from WHO knows where I do you like Baker's mindset heading into twenty twenty I don't man big fan of Baker Mayfield for Bra. He started on Ravello right before the moment true. I can't get. Right. Like first of all, you can't cliche me to deaf inspire me. I've been into many huddles and I. I didn't even trying to hear, and if you are going to say something, it'd better be that gas because if it ain't that gas I'm on your remind Ju, I can't curse on his show I'm on your head. "Difference maker Have Kyle, and into the mix he has thirty starts between college and pro. So I see Alex Smith was a clear advantage and then Paul. Allen and then Dwayne Haskins again, I'm not talking about the next five years bought an opening day because of an unusual off-season, Alex Smith will give them the best chance to win. Wow that really surprises me. What do you think? I'm not totally sure I think it's one thing to get cleared to practice I. Think it's another thing to be able to. Play and compete at the highest level. That exists in this sport. So grainy everything you said about Alex Smith I agree with you I, it is remarkable how easy it would be a guy that was a number one overall pick who's made a ton of money to just walk away at that point guy that got the ability to look ahead at what the rest of his life could look like and being able to play with his kids and you know and have a normal life to be honest with you to do. What he's done is incredible that being said like I still I looked at him and he's got that sleeve on his leg and he looks like he's got some other type of contraption on it like I. Don't know that he's actually totally healthy to compete at a similar level that he was able to compete at in those starts that might referenced. So it is a great story. It's amazing by him. I'm not sure that he's ready to really be back in their Cristiano what are we hearing. What I'm hearing is that there is still a lot that Alex Smith has to show and accomplish before he is a factor in a conversation about who's going to be the starting quarterback for that Washington football team. This year all he's done so far is really work out with trainers on the side do some throwing. So the coaching staff really hasn't seen him in any kind of situation where he has to move around in the pocket where he might have to make a quick decision. You know there's a lot he still has to show with less than four weeks to go until the scheduled first game. So as great. As it would be as as much as I hate to throw any amount of even slightly cold water on any of this, I think what Mike's Projecting here is still far fetched I. Still Think Haskins the most likely to start week one, and if Alex Smith is able to come back and show that he's able to protect himself when he moves around in the pocket, then they start to have a conversation about whether he's the best option but we're a ways away from that. It'd be clear I know that's what you meant I. I know you didn't mean that if he can't play, he will play at ten seconds go. I've been the room with doctors when they've cleared players and I've always said to them if you clean them this coaching decision. So I understand what Tim and Dan said but understand this he is clear. Medically, Ron, Rivera will now make this decision and his experience could make the difference in him starting at the very look. "Jay. Williams Zubin here's what he said. My biggest message to them which is. Really just to. Get them to realize how bad our players WanNa play just the guys. You know the guys that are coming back with the year's your back. Off Of, injury, I think. That we owe to those guys the most I've I've just seen behind the scenes in all the work that they put in and how much they really care about it and I also believe all the coaches and all the parents players want us to play and they also say with the. Ohio state asserts. So I just think that's the biggest message I like to get up to them. It's a remarkable set of circumstances. The football crew joins me here this morning I've got Tim Hasselbeck and Mike Tannenbaum Dan Grazziano and Paul Finebaum who's been with US already. Let me just come to you. Now that we hear Justin field directly, we opened the show this morning talking about this, you described it as a public relations. Nightmare if you will for the big ten, is it any more than that? Do you think there will be further repercussions than just what what appears to be a bad look with the players in the families this publicly unhappy. Mike I don't think it's going to change anything but justin fields is extraordinary spokesman for that that league and I think other players are going to lean on him and you will hear more people stand up and be heard. But but in the end I, don't think he can undo a presidential decision. It creates issues it creates public relations nightmare but I think a week from now the big ten will still be dark in terms of playing college football, Mike, Tannenbaum I. Know you've been talking to a lot of people what have you been hearing? This is GonNa hurt the big ten on three different levels one, the players are just not going to play just in fields they're gonna go with pro football, the be players anybody that has a chance of playing right now in the NFL next year, it's the wild wild west. They're thing about transferring to those other three conferences. So those be players that the big ten was hoping to hold onto they're going. To be gone, and then really maybe most transformationally is recruiting. They're GONNA get obliterated. We know that the ACC, the SEC. Arabia opportunistic and as it relates to recruiting for next year look for the big ten to start these programs literally over with middle of the road at best recruiting classes because their competition will be on. TV. Every week this fall Tim Hasselbeck, if you're a player in that conference right now. And you're one who is in that area not not locked into be a first round pick. But someone who has a chance to prove yourself a little bit. What are you? What do you think you're thinking right now? What do you think you'd be doing right now. Well I think that if I were projected to be anything other than you know fourth-rounder earlier then I think that. Would play so. Whether was spring or whether it was trying to find some scenario where do that but I think this is Kinda unique in the sense that. The conference was never waiting for Justin fields opinion on this or the parents of these players their opinion on this. They made a decision and that ship has sailed and so. I think we're often critical of college football sometimes for chasing the money. They clearly are not doing that here. They've canceled this in the name of player safety. And you can't go back on that at this point, there's nothing that's going to happen. That's going to change that. So well, fields can say that he wants to play like to me. That's the least surprising thing of expected to hear during this entire stretch that players were going to want to play. So look I think that. Brings up a lot of good points. Certainly could create some form of imbalance. They'll be players that that will think. It's wise to sit out some of them won't make the right decision I think they'll be other players. That have opportunity to maybe try to go somewhere else try to get a season in here or there. In. Those guys they might be making the wrong decision. So it really is a mess but I don't think it changes things one bit Paul I'm asking you to guess at something which I know you hate to do. But why not would you guess surprise in the offices of the big ten conference that it has gotten to this place that Yes we knew the players would want to play but would you guess they are surprised at.

"They have a plan meanwhile everyone in the big ten is watching that and everywhere else going what's going on here and another thing the the. Momentum, and the motivation for some of the other conferences to play is even more today than it was three weeks ago. Yes. They realized the viruses out there. But if if the SEC can play while the big ten is home that is a disaster from a recruiting standpoint for all of the schools in the big ten Joey Galloway you played at Ohio State you want a great players in the conference. What do you make of all of this as you sit back and watch it I have so many questions I. Don't know where to begin what do you think of all this? Heather, you mentioned that Maryland can afford to gamble with the health bit student athletes. No college anywhere can afford to gamble with the health of its student athletes and so in this situation at to hear parents, say you know we understand our risks of playing football. At as if. We're okay in. So you have those parents talk to parents of kids that have died from say heat stroke or or had issues from say concussions because guys wanted to play through concussions also, and so when you look at these situations, I, understand there is a lot of energy to play football It shows great leadership by Justin Fields. It shows that he can get a group together and and showed their desire to play. That is not in question here. And really has nothing to do with when you have to make decisions in football and in any sport regarding the health of the athletes involved that takes precedent over any desire Any anything that apparent may think should happen the idea is this is a game of football and people must be kept safe to play this game of football and let's not take that lightly these decisions made by these presidents and delivered by the by the Commissioner of the big ten. Comes from people who understand not only do people want to play, but there are financial ramifications to deal with this for their own universities. If they're willing to make those decisions, then there must be real reasons for them to put their schools in that situation that they're saying that these student athletes are way more important and we must protect them. It would not seem to me that the people in charge of the big ten be that the commission or the president's or some combination of all can just let this go as though it never happened. Someone has to acknowledge that this petition exists and and these feelings are out there. So what does that look like? Would you expect? They make some sort of state moved to expect some sort of meeting what should we expect to happen as a result of this this? Well, this is sort of uprising of emotion. The parents, of Ohio State and Iowa have asked have given Kevin Warren a deadline for later in this week they've asked for a meeting and the angst is coming from their voices were never heard right? They want input they want answers to the questions they want transparency they want to know specifically what the reasons are for whether suns can't play. It seems reasonable. I mean Joey. I understand the way you feel to the parents need to hear that. Need to be more transparency on the part of the people making the decisions as to this specifically is why we have chosen not to play this fall. I think that goes two ways. I don't know that there is an answer out there. That would make people making emotional decisions because they wanna play because they wanna see their kids play I honestly don't know what they could be told to change their minds and say, all right. You're right. Let's shut it down. Okay. I'M GONNA, leave it there for the moment because I'm out of time here I do three hours on this today. So all of you please stay close because we're coming back to it regularly as there was so much to unpack here and I want to hear from you today the question is really simple. Do you believe they should white college football this fall it is on my twitter page at ESPN Greenie go ahead and vote there's a ton of votes there. Already and mccarey this over under radio this afternoon I would really like to know what you think. Do you believe they should be playing football this fall knowing what you know yes or no casio at ESPN greedy on twitter meanwhile, we're just getting started coming up pats bombs have a little more Michael Jordan and and then you may have thought wait till you hear how one of his coaches describe him and you'll hear his response and then does sanity see playoff insanity involving the Lakers in round one we'll ask them the future hall of Famer Fans Carter joins US live in. Just a moment very is is ready to go Friday early on a Monday Vince Carter live next get on ESPN. Get up is brought to you by Pantene. To Her Let's just keep showing that I. Just showing that Ladies and gentlemen the Future Hall of Famer, Vince Carter whose highlight reel I would say rivals, any highlight reel that has ever been put together in history. Good Morning Vince how are you morning? Thank you. Thank you for doing this and congratulations on everything and we're going to dive into all this playoff stuff here because we're using you as an analyst delighted to do it but I just wanted to give credit where. It is due to you because people would ask all the time over these last couple of years. Wise Vince Carter still out there. Why is he still playing even especially on the end of your career on teams that realistically weren't GonNa Win a championship and it seemed to me you were doing it because you liked it and there's probably no better reason to do what was that what was your answer when people would say why it's Vince Carter still out there? Absolutely I think know for further the net I'm I did it because I loved it. Still. So Compete but I wanted to play it. That's how I wanted to contribute. To sit on the bench in in just collect the rain with a team. It wasn't my. Way of handling my business in enjoying. What had left as a basketball player so I was fortunate enough to be able to do it my way in still play the game that I love in worked so hard for even. In Ford, and so. It was great. It was great run. I have fun to watch. Okay. Let's put you at work here I want to start. By playing some sound from Anthony Davis who have identified in my opinion is the most important player in this upcoming NBA playoffs begin today and he of course, has always been on underdogs. Now he's on a favorite here's what he said about that difference. Other different. Not taking new. ORLEANS, most time we we were underdogs. Here. Favorite. So it's a lot bigger. You know we underdog when again this supposed to. Necessarily target bad. Favor. they know the pressure on us to win games and other team. Let's talk about that. Vince Carter. How does that pressure affect players in? How would you expect it to affect? Anthony. Davis. That pressure does the state players I think. When you come into a situation like Anthony Davis is when you're the underdog you just go out there and play and you swing for the fences and you say we'll see what happens. Now when you're the favorite and you're expected to play in the Eastern Conference finals if not the finals. The pressure is To go out and play perfect basketball they he has the luxury of Lebron James. On his side and could lead him when he's not playing well. But I something you said off airs he is probably the most important player. For their team right now you know what? The Bronze GonNa Bring but you need Anthony Davis to play at a high level for them to accomplish that goal at least to the to the western Congress and if not more I, think just the western. Conference finals at this point would be a disappointment based upon their season and based upon the two stars they have. Let's pick up on that thought what specifically do you think? Anthony Davis needs to give them to get them through the West to get them through the clippers and maybe win the whole thing. I say monster numbers in and he's going to need the numbers because. Until they figure out who the third guy who's very capable be the third guy we know like once again, we know Lebron going to be Lebron in moments where he needs to step up, he will do so but. Playing through? Anthony. Davis will make things easier for the Lakers it opened up. At No, they shoot. They have shot a great percentage in.

"In offensive efficiency this season all these games again, coming up today on ESPN Vince Carter will join us. It's a preview in fifteen minutes, but that brings us to our big story of the day. Josten field superstar Ohio State quarterback has created a petition requesting the big. Ten Conference immediately reinstate the twenty twenty football season so far it has well over two hundred fifteen thousand signatures. This is part of what it says we the football players of the big ten together with the fans and supporters of college football requested the big ten conference immediately reinstate the season allow big ten players and teams to make their own choice as to whether they wished to play or opt out this fall season allow big ten players and teams who choose to opt out of playing a fall season to do so without penalty or repercussion. So he's talking. So our parents of big ten football players questioning the decision to postpone. Are. We just now realizing that there are risks that you take to play football. There are risks in life. It's really not fair to go forward and have our sons who have worked equally as hard how their season completely cancelled while others will go on but it's just simply not right. We as parents are churches support our sons as they move through their dreams and Mike and get to their aspirations. Wow. So that's a lot to unpack and the good news is we have all the right people to do with Joey Galloway is up early. So as Paul Finebaum it, of course, we'll start with heather. Who was supposed to be on vacation today and then this happened. And had they're good enough to jump in with here. So you've got justin fields. We've got a petition we have over two hundred, thousand people signing. We have parents speaking out I. Guess The question is simple. Is there a real chance that this will create a change and we will see football in the big ten this fall? I would be shocked greedy shocked if the president's reversed course on this, the reality of the situation is this the big ten has acknowledged. It has received letters from parents. There is a lot of anger and frustration not just from parents and their sons, but also from coaches and athletic directors throughout the conference who are still trying to figure out the abrupt about-face between the big ten schedule announcement, and then less than six days later, postponing false sports to the spring, but everyone has to remember that this decision was made by university. Presidents who are all dealing with different situations and made the decision based on the advice of the big ten medical advisory panel and I'm going to bring this up because it illustrates how different it is in twenty eighteen Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair died from heat stroke that he suffered at a practice I, do not know how Maryland President voted but I can tell you from covering that story for over a year that Maryland is one school that can not afford to gamble whatsoever with the health of its student athletes. So everyone. Is dealing with different situations on their own campus says, and while Ohio state has a lot of money resources and privilege to take care of those student athletes, everyone has to remember that those presidents are making those decisions based on what they have to work with also could be making them individually. One of the things that I took from reading those words in Justin's fields position, and we all sat here and crushed Nebraska for to go out on their own. But one of the things that he said is not only let the. Players make up their own minds, but let the schools make up their own minds. So if there were schools that wanted to play I, think we are all of the opinion I don't know the details that there were schools that voted to continue playing and they were just outvoted in this. Is it unreasonable to say that the schools that would like to continue that have players that would like to continue could go on even if the entirety of the big ten did not heather is that is that even in the realm of possibility? Well. Honestly. It's a question that I would have to ask Big Ten, Commissioner Kevin Warren but I do think that it. It could be in the realm of possibility if you have a majority of schools that want to do that look in this spring, we talked about the possibility of a conference moving on if one or two teams couldn't play Michael Rest go the commissioner of the American Athletic Conference told me Hey yeah, we were willing to. Do that. So I don't know necessarily that power five conference couldn't do that. The question is how many could and that's one of the things pairs race to me. They said, look we can have our players opt out why can't entire schools opt out if they don't feel safe. Okay. So there's the table set for us Paul Finebaum I'm giving you the floor. We've got players high super high profile player. We have parents who have people angry. What does it mean? It means that this is a public relations nightmare for the big ten in green need they did it to themselves. Yes. They announced the schedule and came right back and canceled and the biggest problem. The Big Ten has had is they didn't explain their reasoning Kevin warranted did has done one interview, one major television interview with the big ten network and quite frankly it was embarrassing he was not authentic. He was not transparent. It looked like he was trying to cover for the president's which he may very well have been in since then a lot of this has just blown up and he has not gotten control of it. It's also worth remembering this is his first year on the job he took over for Jim Delany, whose was there for twenty five years and was legendary and that really is their. Biggest issue right now, they have no messaging and on top of that guess what's happening today in the SEC greedy. The SEC is releasing its schedule. They're doing it in in prime time on SEC network television they're going to trump how they're ready to play. They have a plan meanwhile everyone in the big ten is watching that and everywhere else going what's going on here and another thing the the. Momentum, and the motivation for.

During the baseball season when it initially started, the baseball media went bonkers freaked out Oh my God, the world's ending when the Miami marlins generally a sub optimal franchise had multiple players test for covert. Yeah, they're young. They made mistakes frankly almost age-appropriate. My wife says that all the time. When our kids make mistakes. She said, are they age appropriate when my son was like four years old I thought it was funny. If you were sitting on the couch, he'd walk around and come up and look you on the face. He was four. He didn't do it at seven if he did it at nine twelve, really inappropriate at four. age-appropriate. These are Major League baseball players they've had thirteen thousand tests. "And I think a lot of dame. The problem he has he went to a high school. He wasn't controversial. He goes to Weber State. He goes to Portland which is geographically remote. They've never even had an all star game. They don't have the hotel big enough and he doesn't talk a lot. Let's his game do the talking and it's a really good franchise but Iverson. Georgetown controversy unique style but I put their numbers up next to each other, and that's with dame having former prime years unlike they look the same to me, they're look an. Ear Out of your mind, why why is are you about to go there I'm not saying he's there. Yeah, I'm saying Chris. It's not that far off in three years. This kid offensively is the best shooter right now at Steph and the entire sport. I let me think there's a lot to unpack their number one and I was talking with a scout in the league about this just yesterday. Damian Lillard and some of these other guys, CJ mccollum Damian Lillard was never you know given the superstar treatment growing up. He you said, he went to weaver state. He stayed there three years I believe, and so he's he handle the criticism when a coach stealth do this he doesn't have that ego where he can't hear you know the criticism can't be coats a lot of this generation's players who grew up as AAU superstars who went to as you said, the huge schools, they can't take the criticism I have scowl tell me he sat. Down with players and say, he said, they said, what do I need to work on and he said, well, you need to lose some weight and they've cut him off. They won't talk with him. You don't have to worry about things like that with guys like Daimler, who didn't get that superstar treatment. So that's one thing I love about it. Now as far as Alan Iverson, you really WanNa say he's better I'm saying. I'm saying in three years I'm looking at those numbers dame's got three to four great years of prime shooting left. Dame is great. There's no doubt about it. Let's see if he continues but remember Alan Iverson would an MVP MVP He led the League in scoring several years. He's the best pound for pound score rich. We've ever seen there's no doubt about that and he got a team to the finals. Lost in Five Games coaching Larry Graham but they were the one team they got game from the Lakers ain't nobody else even beat them including Tim Duncan Spurs so I I, I will not go there just yet. But here's the other thing dame now has reached that level Colin were now we're looking at. Okay. Are you going to win? Even if you know when the championship when you get close every year, you need to be close and so I think he's reaching that superstar level but slowdown on on and are you saying he's the best six footage player ever? Iverson and then let let me let me let me guess is an told us this name Isaiah. I. Like Isaiah Thomas I. Don't think he shot like this and I liked him I liked him a lot nobody at that time sound like this but Isaiah is the only person alive. That can say I'd be Jordan Bird and magic in their prime they all had top fifty teammates Isaiah didn't have one top fifty teammate no, I, get it. I like Isaiah trying to marginalize me that I don't like Isaiah Thomas I love office. All right he's the best small player ever right Cow, Steph is a small guy. Yeah. I don't all right. Good seeing anybody. Coming up next studies indicate the you the consumer, the audience. Trust, the media less than you've ever trusted them. "Therapists on apple podcasts the iheartradio APP over ever you get your costs Good to have Yan the Houston Astros won a world series a few years ago against the dodgers, the dodgers are still bitter but they have a reason to because who Houston. Cheated and stuff they knew what pitches were coming. They were banging on drums and banging on garage cans and they had this whole system worked out that eventually got their. GM in their manager fire but players did not get fired. They had immunity they were rats and they got immunity and Joe. Kelly is now a dodger and it just drives him nuts the snitch and the rats over for Houston it should be noted now Huston, his eight and ten so far. It's amazing when you don't know when the pitches are coming and what kind of pitches it. Yeah. You're not as good Jose altuve is hitting under one ninety and. The Astros were I in baseball and hitting last year another fifteenth. It's just amazing when you don't know exactly what the pitches that's coming. It's crazy how that works. nutty coincidence and Joe. Kelly is now a dodger pitcher and he got into a scrap a while back about a week or so maybe two weeks ago against the Astros, he threw it them over their head a couple of times love him for that and he went on a podcast this week and he still banging on the Astros. The people that took the fall for what happened is nonsense. Everyone's involved. But the way that thing was ran over, there was not from coaching staff it was ran with Code News, APP. Yes. Don't get me wrong but they're not they're not the head Boston charge of that thing is the players. So now the players get the immunity and all they do is go snitch like a little. And they don't have to find. They don't have to lose games. He's not wrong by the way now I I've said this before. I'm not a big snitch person, but I would be more likely to snitch as a mobster than I would be a baseball player because if you snitch in the mob and you call the feds at least you can go hide in a move to a boring town the food's not as good. There's no juice to your life but as a mobster I could rat on guys to the feds. And a lot of guys have and they just moved to a city I'd call the feds and say, listen give me a nice place in Malibu looking at the water I'll I'll sell everybody out and I don't see myself as a snitch in baseball I would not rap. Because in baseball if you rat. People. Just throw at your head for years. In fact, you could end up on the team. that. Your former team hates. And people would throw at you and you could be in the sport for fifteen years. You're Raton the mob like that picture of me you gone you're disappear. You go live in Arkansas or something like that. But in baseball. You can't. And that's why. The Astros are getting exactly what they deserve. They never considered while they cheated the repercussions here they are. The ball is hard and guys through it ninety eight, and they can throw it at you sometimes a little high and in dangerous spots. Here's more from Joe Kelley. When you take someone's livelihood to save your own ass. That's what I. Don't like cheating. They cheated. Everyone knows her cheaters. They know they're cheaters. It's over that's been there done with but now they mess it up by GonNa ruin and other people's laps. Twice when you take someone's name to save your own name I think that that is one of the worse things you could probably do it. Just really freaking bugs me like I I. Think I'll be irritated forever. He is not wrong Joe Kelley of the dodgers joy Taylor, the news. On the news, this is the headline news. Well Cam Newton is expected to be the Patriots starter this season we. We think. But football check is apparently not just gonNA hand him the job he was reportedly third in line to take quarterback reps in practice this week. Brian Hoyer was first. Injured System was second. Third is sending a message. Now I think he's just doing about check does like he has a system has a way about things got to earn your way to the top and. I would I would do pay per view to watch this. Yeah. I don't understand listen all you network executives when you're done with your four hour Martini lunches. Put. Patriots Dolphins practice I, WanNa. Watch. I WANNA watch to, why are you not televising this hour soliciting for practices I'd also like to watch tangles practice, which was not a sentence I never thought I would say in my life, but we job borough skipping balls to players. Joe. Borough I. Don't I want to watch this. Watch this over everything but the NBA Finals I wanNa Watch Cam I WANNA watch ballot check I want to watch their practice I. Well, I don't know that they want everyone watching their prime minister that's probably part of it but. When they start like inner squats scrimmage. The patriots tape everybody else exactly. This is payback you should be able to watch your practices I'm not gonNA live too much into that I. think that's just this is how they're doing things out of respect. So George Kitto will be saying in San Francisco for the foreseeable future for the agreed to a five year seventy five, million dollar contract extension with the forty niners with an average of fifteen, million a year. This deal will make him the highest paid Titan in the NFL by far Hunter Henry is the second highest paid He's the franchise tag for ten point six million. And Austin Hooper signed a four year forty, two, million, ten, point five, million for years about five million more more per year for George get owner Jason He's underpaid I. Think we've reached a time in the NFL. where? The tight end is as valuable as the wide receiver. You remember we had. On a couple of weeks ago, and he was talking about his podcast interviews, tight ends, and he mentioned this that kittle is the one who has to set the market for ends because you're right tight ends. A great tight ends like Kiddo like Gronk, in his prime who's in a super bowl, two teams to the best the two best tight end in football. We're both the Super Kelsey a great tight ends. I is Kinda more valuable than than a high level receiver. Do More on the field. Well, they steal. Other thing they do is they blocked right and the other thing is that the most important NFL games in December January bad weather that often takes the vertical essence of football out until you get to a super bowl and the dome or the warm weather, the wildly important and. How big was Gronk two years ago? How big? Yeah. Shelve himself and he was he was the difference maker in that Super Bowl. So yeah, it's good. That will obviously he deserves this this. This may become more of a trend that he had set the market for high level tight ends and I I honestly feel like they could really make a strong argument that they're more valuable than than your top receivers with a lot of offenses abs especially with a young quarterback joy they will say the tight ends they don't do the volume because the position is different obviously, but they're still extremely valuable. So finally only one playoffs by is still up for grabs in the NBA. So most of the teams have their first round matchups sets. But the clippers are locked into the second seed in the west and doesn't think seating that important this year. It doesn't seem like sees matters I mean. Just like tonight we inverted so's for the traveling Eric. Altitude. Other using..

"For I'm Lakers name. Can I go jeff please go. Balance. This out. You sound like a football player talking bath. Wash the. The. Blazers. I'll give you. They'll go six. Oh. If I in Dame will have three four good Games, which get great games which get to victories. But Nick right is on the money would they got to stop lebrun and stopping C. J. Dame is not the same as stopping Lebron James there is such a thing as playoff. Lebron. By. The Lakers really familiar a of Lebron James. Twenty seventeen in Cleveland they finished the last two months, eleven and fifteen turn it on in the playoffs get to the finals twenty sixteen they've been as Jenin seven, turn it on in the playoffs win the final. So this isn't unusual Lebron will come out stoke for the play offs and they can't stop you. But beyond that, they can't stop Anthony Davis the the the. Blazes perimeter defense is poor and that's their problem you're right. They're shooting is going to give the Lakers problems because they don't talk the perimeter well either but there is no way dame is going to beat Lebron Anthony Davis CJ O., B. Inconsistent Gary Trent junior will probably not play that well in the spotlight of the play offs. Oh, I found so it ruins their word. Learned Marcella. Here's what I learned about Paul Basketball. Guy. You know. You're one of those football guys such lazy lazy out to try to defeat fast see those being a football guy. But then there's just being an intelligent human being and all it is safely as I'm looking at the real stats real fat. So to matter what I learned brought spent way too much time in the casino wrassling way too much. You can't bet against the way and what you're trying to do right now is bet against the way well sooner or later dame is gonNA break Lebron is he's a playoff guy who knows Lebron I do think Lebron is a playoff guy but I also think that the Pose a real threat I'm not saying the blazers beat them but the question was, should the Lakers be nervous them for you to death don't Chris. Chris. Didn't too much stock in the bubble. So I guess. I guess he jay. Ward is an all star. Do. We care about what happened in November of twenty nineteen or what happened. August eleventh. I just don't care what? was on Christmas Day. Last year feels like ten years ago. It's not a matter of putting stock in the Bubbas. Just I am what have you done for me lately? Not What have you done for me? Dame is averaging thirty seven points a game in a mom to his twenty eight points a game outside the bubble that thirty seven has to way more than that twenty eight. The fact that Danny Green can't even find a rim has to mean more than what he did in the NBA finals back in. Twenty? Says it has to make it makes it I saved some of them. Told me let me just some of this. Me Tell up in here right now because I'm the fool screen king. So let me just. Set the tone what my screen. You, I wanNA talk about the bubble because they play the play offs. No homecourt advantage Lebron them went out there and fall for homecourt doesn't matter and that's what I'm seeing right now comparison the two teams into bubble. I don't see one category and which the Lakers are better. Not One category even though they have arguably the best duo in the NBA. Now, one category better than his team. So that is called a wave coming at you taught the Portland Trailblazers. Then you'd start talking about double digit scores and I love just said, Trent Juniors not gonNA play well under the bright lights but Kyle Kuzma. Is Oh, how many playoff minutes Kyle Kuzma guy don't do it to a Mo-. Nut. So Lee Who has been in the League but this is. Essentially his. We already seen it but how do last night? Sudden. He's twice that wasn't A. Hearing Junior. and. Then he he lays an egg come on I'm played in big games at Duke. The KUZMA has an NBA Telo. Let's keep going seven double digit scores owned the Portland Trailblazers. I only four and the Lakers and one of them is cool. So we don't even know go anyway let's talk about school sometimes football basketball guy we get caught up in name calling and lose all of the real material. Real, the religious. Let's play a little pickup game and I'll go have you to pick between Lillard mccullum Carmelo. It's whiteside junior and he over Lebron. Waiters coups bookcase. Never. To forget titles, forget accolades forget what you used to. Why can't we? Because this is what's coming. They're gonNA meet in this moment they're not gonna meet in the past. Are you living in the past right now? Well First of all, let let you blazers get there. I'm not convinced they're getting out I'm thinking them to get their today the. MEMPHIS two-time straight is not going to be easy and I really hope it's Portland and Phoenix because I wanNA, see day in Verse Book and I'm Picking Portland There Josh tripping six game. Was Coming off at twenty, one, thousand, nine th season for the record books driven star led the League in touchdown passes and had the most rushing yards ever in Zimbabwe quarterback former super bowl MVP. Williams stinks terrain and MVP who'd be setting a new NFL trend as a dual Gret SAM. Unfortunately, not going to get a Lamar Jackson every year for the next Mark Jackson that does come out I. Don't think the coaches in the scouts appointed sit around and say what he can't do as a quarterback. We're going to take a page out of Baltimore and go back and get the tape to see what they did with Lamar Jackson and you theft. God, especially young black guys that are super talented athletically joined once again by Lavar Arrington but also coming to you you think, Lamar. Style has opened the door for others like him I do not. But first things first shout out to Lamar because he is changing the culture he is a trendsetter and he is going to have a lot of young athletic quarterback then being real a lot of young black quarterbacks believing and dreaming and actually accomplishing them playing the quarterback but this in but. The point you said has Lamar opened up the door for others like him. He hasn't because he can't open up the door. The door is open by general managers by head coaches by quarterback coaches. Now, the more has we'll have more people standing in line to get inside that door, but he hasn't opened up that door because what it comes down to is people always look for an excuse or reason not to do something they don't want to do right now there's still an excuse not to lead with a mobile quarterback the Mark Jackson he is he's leaps and. Bounds ahead of what rg three accomplished but to accomplish a lot now that first couple of years the Mark Jackson, he's shown lease leaps and bounds ahead of what Michael Vick accomplice. But Still Lamar Jackson hasn't won a playoff game general managers they don't care if you're the NFL MVP, they don't care if you on the cover of mad they want to win super bowls something that Lamar Jackson hasn't yet gotten close to doing. So he hasn't yet opened up the door for others like him, but he does have a few more people now standing in line to get inside. So we're going to argue over how open the door is not. Saying it's not at all I disagree with that and I agree with Doug Williams in this respect. One. Bill Polian Bill Polian has changed his tone about Lamar Jackson. Poli is always brought up with Lamar, Jackson is because how Great Bill Polian is and how wrong he was this talent. So all of the gatekeepers out there at all levels, it's not just bill polian former general manager hall of fame General Manager Talking about Lamar Jackson and those type of quarterbacks the mobile quarterbacks do threats to point owes it's the lower level coaches in evaluators who are now understanding. Oh, I. Could been wrong about this type of talent. Let's talk about how this type of talent is even created because when I was growing up a guy like me who turns out to be six four to he wasn't even looking to be an NFL. He wanted to be the boxing heavyweight champion of the world and lose a few pounds and try and do it George Foreman and that type of scope and then. All of a sudden NFL started to have the money have the resources have the glamour and that condition guy like me to become something else we all know from playing sandlot football the greatest athlete own the Sandlot is playing what position running back and then that started the more for to not put them every saver. Now, YOU'RE GONNA look at receivers that out there talented, athletically gifted and coaches going to walk up to him because of a Lamar Jackson success. Let's say you throw the ball as well and that's how the door is opening. Wrong. Sorry Lavar. I just I can't let this one go dog dog is wrong Marcello twelve. Trevor Lawrence sparks united #WeWantToPlay movement, players association goal as 2020 season hangs in balance
"Let me ask you. You've seen this trending some of the biggest players in college football. Justin Fields, Trevor Laurence. We want to play. We saw Trey Lance at NDS you their quarterback who's going to probably be a top 10 pick. He wants to play. What do you think about the players and certain programs coming out saying Let us play, But yet here we're gonna have the conference is probably cancel it. I'll start with the players. I have a ton of respect for Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields in trail and to be honest for guys to speak out, because those guys probably more so than anyone. That plant on playing college football in 2020. They have the most to lose, right. I mean, I would say they're probably all top 10 picks. I haven't seen anything on Justin feels lately, but I know he's talented as they come. Trevor Laurence and obviously Trey Lance, but You look at those guys to speak out and use their platform for their fellow college athletes. I have a ton of respect for that, but at the same time I don't really agree with them because for two reasons, the 1st 1 being They obviously want to play the same way that I have friends that wanted to have their wedding this summer. I have you know people that want to go on trips and people that want to go visit their parents without fear of Dean, asymptomatic carrier and passing covert along to them, so people want to do a lot of things. That doesn't mean we should or that doesn't mean that we Are allowed to right now because during a global pandemic times are just different. Like I want to hop on a plane and go visit friends. But guess what? I cannot do that right now. At least I should not be doing that right now because it's in the best interest. Or of the general health of myself in the population and those around me, So we're making those sacrifices in college football is not immune to to those things, and at the same time if you're a college athlete I feel like if I was a charge of the College Football Players committee, not that they have one of those, but they had a union or something. I would have waited until the conference schedules said Hey, do you know what we are going to play football this year? And then I would use that as leverage to Seo so are being treated differently than normal students who are all at home doing virtual learning. I feel as if we should be compensated for this. And if they were gonna pay, they should be paid to play because they're essential employees now at this point, right? You have normal student at home taking classes on mine, but you're going to ask the players. To travel to pay rent to live on campus and then you know, go risk their health and their livelihood on the field. That's what in central employees, in fact is, so I don't know. I understand the competitive desire. I feel like I would probably have the same mentality. A 20 Thinking you can't touch me. I want to play college football is my senior year. But at the end of the day, I want to do a lot of things. But much smarter People tell me I shouldn't do those things.
The Fate of College Football's 2020 Season
"Ridden Berg thank you for taking a little bit of time after what is zoom is an incredibly chaotic day to chat with me. GREAT TO BE WITH IT'S A. Very historic and like you said wild and crazy time right now in college football, we figure out whether there'll be a season if there is who way. Adam Ridden Berg is scrambling to cover college football including the big ten. conference. For ESPN. Adam I want to start by rewinding a little bit actually from your perspective. What last week looked like because as a Friday, it kind of looked like we were GonNa have some college football. There was this path moving forward on that front and so if you had to make a chart. Of how things stood last week of who is in who is out who was on the fence for actually playing college football what would that chart have looked like? It's like an optimistic chart going back to two marsh but certainly even last week I still felt fairly optimistic about the possibility of a season. We had Yukon that announced on Wednesday that they weren't gonNA, play but they're independent. They're not connected to these television contracts like others are even these these group of five. Leagues. And then Thursday into Friday. He was hearing from sources around the sport that, Hey, this Mac meeting that was on Saturday in the mid American conference that was to be significant. That, there was a chance that at least one school was not going to play and others might be in the same boat and the whole league might decide at that point to postpone the fall season and football. It Yo it became clear that we were heading a lot closer to a you know a national postponement or at least a large groups of the College Football Leagues deciding not to play this fall. And so Adam you and I are talking at about six Oh five pm eastern time right now on a Monday so. What happened today and it will I guess what was the first thing that happened today on your feet? Well, again a lot we reported ESPN and others that the the big ten presidents were strongly leaning towards postponing that was on Sunday, and then you're the news that broke overnight was significant that this crash tag we WANNA play movement From Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin fields of Ohio state. Some of the most prominent players in college football were getting real traction I mean this is your became the number one trending topic on twitter for a little while that was sort of the big story overnight and then today it's just monitoring. You know what's going on in the big ten. There's been reports that they've already canceled. That's not a at least as this recording that's not true. The Mountain West. Late, this afternoon did decide to postpone their seasons. So that's the second FBI's conference after the men American to decide not to play football and other sports this year. and You specifically cover the big ten that's your beat, and that's the conference. Everyone seems to be waiting to see what move comes next. So what exactly as we speak now is happening with the big ten this evening. Right. So it appears that the athletic directors are or speaking that's not a huge deal because they talking all the time now in the League but th, there's a sense of when they'll be a formal vote among presidents that hasn't taken place. I haven't heard from many sources that vote among presidents it's imminent but in theory I, it wouldn't take very long for that to take place if the League was ready to move forward with the postponement. So I think the discussions now are regarding timing whether some of the positions have changed around the conference. You've had a number of prominent coaches speak out about their desire to have. A season the big ten Pablo has always been a league. I I've covered it for a number of years that's been largely unified on the big topics and I can't remember a time where you've had a group of presidents that seem ready to postpone for the most part. But then you have many others loud voices in the league like the coaches like the players saying this isn't right. You can't do this. This is a wrong thing to do at this point and so that that's that's a unique spot for a conference has always prided itself on your equal revenue sharing and you're trying to be unified in its messaging.
"justin fields" Discussed on Pick Six NFL Podcast
"Listen. This is for the cover three listeners. Better here this is a a relationship that goes back. Many years I think we all like and dislike each other equal amounts just across the board of the quadrants and It's exciting to be able to be with you guys and and get in on a little crossover episode. I would like to declare myself as the very first super enemy of the pick six. Podcast that you've been you've you have like your like a borderline like honorary super friend. You both have enemy okay. Super friendly dumping a super friendly but I can stay for the record that I've hated Brenston for dozens of years. What kind of crazy. I think that collectively between the forum because our mutual friend. Hey sperm our text me though day and was asking me. He's like don't you have some kind of anniversary coming up to CBS? And I was like maybe turns out. July will be my ten year anniversary. Cbs which means that. We have a borderline on this call borderline forty years of CBS. Work Experience which we are Briscoe. We are as a weird people. Go because you came on right after. I had yeah August and then Tom and Ryan not long after. Us right came on came late. August twenty ten right. I'm the Nice. Take that so Tom. Do you have any connection? North Carolina family friends visitations. I'm friends with a guy who went to North. Carolina hosts the PODCAST. I'm on one hundred percent North Carolinians on the but that's good enough well he Yeah Tom. Toms gotten drunk with me. And and my wife In Chicago take twelve ten years ago around. Give or take then we went to. Where did we go? Did we get billy goat as it was for like twelve years ago because I wasn't working to CBS? Then Yeah Yeah Man Drunk. We did about the same time. I was Podcast Wilson on the old Fan House. The House Cast House Anyway. About Twenty twenty one. Nfl draft instead of the past. Let's look to the future. Two thousand twenty one in F. L. Draft Aka the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes Chip and. Tom Us you guys. As is Thomas Tom because chip. Acc homer and Thomas. It's not is there any way that Trevor Lawrence is draft? Justin fields could be taken over Trevor Lawrence in the twenty twenty one. Nfl draft barring like an injury or no college football player etc. Yeah I mean I. I think that at this time last year. We didn't think there'd be any way that to it wasn't the top pick in the draft and we saw how that went with borough kind of coming out of quote unquote nowhere to have a huge season. But if you look at fields it's if you look at how they both played last year really wasn't a major difference between them on the whole and fields is the more mobile of the two whereas Lawrence kind of busted out the run. It's more last season. He's not justin fields when it comes to running but if you look at their overall numbers last year fields at a higher. Td rate lower interception rate it higher completion percentage though the difference was his on target rate was lower. But it wasn't that much lower than Lawrence's and that's for the whole season but if you break it down because if we look at Trevor Lawrence is I think that Lawrence will be the first mistaken like you said barring injury but I'm not ruling it out because if you look at Lawrence a season as a whole the numbers aren't as great but the first three games of the season he was bad. I mean there were two the two blowout wins over Georgia Tech and Syracuse in which he was just kind of playing free and loose. Chuck the ball taking chances and he ended up throwing some pics then there was a close game against an where he completed seventy percent of his passes but he didn't play all that well but from week four on although stats. I mentioned. Lawrence was much better than fields in like every single one. Although fields had a slim lead in the touchdown interception rate was the same. Their yards per attempt was offense. Essentially the same but Lawrence is on target rate. Went UP TO SEVENTY FIVE POINT. Eight percent which was a full five and a half percent higher than fields. That's a significant difference. And then you take him to the fact that Ohio states team on target catch rate as a team last year was ninety. One Percent Clinton was eighty-eight Ohio States. Drop rate was at six point. Three and Lawrence's was eight point six with Clemson receiver so even though he had better stats he was also a bit unlucky with his receivers who are also highly rated and we'll probably get to them again later at least one of them did not play as low as Ohio state's receiver. So when you look at all that as a picture I think. Trevor Lawrence is your prototypical number-one pick type of quarterback but I think fields is talented enough and is better than a lot of people. Maybe wanted to give him credit for that. Yes if he goes out and this year and has another. Strong season improves his accuracy. He can very easily overtake. Lawrence is number one in the class yet. There are games where Trevor Lawrence is not the best clemson player in some of that is by design privacy. Tnn IS THE TWO-TIME ACC player of the year. Like he is at times within the flow at the offense the Alpha and this is sort of what we're using to be able to establish what we WANNA do. Lean on the defense a little bit Trevor Lawrence Top. Nfl draft prospect top quarterback talent but just in fields is the Alpha for Ohio state. He is the passing game. He is the running game. They have a thin running back room right now and I think that Justin feels with as much offense of responsibility as he's going to carry four. Ohio state is probably going to end up having a better college football season. They more likely to win. The heisman edge out Lawrence for some of the all America stuff. But I definitely understand. Why when you just sort of pick apart all the different pieces of Trevor Lawrence you like Yep. He was cooked up to be an NFL quarterback. I still think Lawrence goes number. One you guys would make a good point and this point was made by Barton. Simmons actually think day three draft We we actually all second on the twenty twenty one draft and he said Yeah. Trevor Lawrence is the same dock number one overall pick right now but I mean. Don't forget Justin feels. It's been that offense or one year. He had a knee injury late in the year. So you SORTA hobbled. He wasn't the same guy that we saw early on. And if he continues to progress in year two like we saw on your one there is a conversation to be had and you. You guys both touched on it. Trevor Laurence says that the world on fire yet last year I was at Syracuse game. And he he looked like crap. I mean there are times where you wonder what he was doing I know someone at Clemson and they kept joking. The problem is Trevor Lawrence girlfriends so hot but I think when you go like Trevor Lawrence your girlfriends. 'cause we had no matter what you could sell carpet so. I don't know if that was it but the couple. Yeah I haven't even seen her red hair better hair for sure yeah hair. I don't think he's better looking if Trevor Lawrence doesn't have an attractive girlfriend. It's like there would be an NFL team be like we ask is dead. Doesn't have a good looking girl. I post a picture of Mason Rudolph girlfriend and they said now. I dare you to call a mediocre Mason because he looks like what an NFL quarterbacks girlfriend's shed look like even though he's not a great quarterback. I WanNa ask you something. Really quickly quit You mentioned that the officers that run through Trevor Lawrence. They run through translated parts and other players. That were there. If I was only half paying attention I would say. Oh he's talking about chick from. Wow but he's not jake from right. No no one hundred percent. Not Jake from because then you have the back half of the season when he was averaging what like twelve yards per attempt in some of those games went on an interception free streak of like seven or eight games near the end of the season. I I think that that the inconsistency the beginning of the season is worth your attention though as I can report from. Acc homer corner. What all the people at Clemson say is that trump was trying too hard that he as a very young human being now heard all of the expectations that were being put on him. After he lit up Alabama and a forty four to sixteen national championship. Game Win came into the next season trying to force it a little bit and then like extra extra homer. If you had t higgins and Justin Ross when you Texas shots to like that was their audience they just had two big dudes matchup advantages almost every single snap and so I think he forced it a lot. I think he made some bad decisions and when he calmed down a little bit and sort of stepped into the flow of the offense win. Travis eating in kind of took over as the missed important player in the offense. Clemson saw better team success Lawrence that we have to say. I think we have to consider the boredom factor for asking until the Carolina game and then everybody. The national pundits were like well if they lose like even if they run the table they might not be guaranteed a shot at the stupidest thing. I've ever heard and daddy got pissed Sharon Lawrence locked. Et and got pissed Brent Venables. He's always pissed but he got real. Everybody that's Clemson until the playoff had a game that was like within twenty points the rest of the way they played blue. They all the teacher terrible. But there's like blew out wake forest. It's like seventeen points at half hanging in there. It was it was a they caught fire and I think I agree time. There's definitely aboard factor there. Yeah like if you're playing madden on rookie. After awhile you just start trying stupid stuff to keep yourself. Entertain right exactly. How do you explain Jacobson? Justin fields having to leave Georgia. I think that from I mean as far as NFL quarterback prototypical. He doesn't have the talent the size. The arm. Strength that eastern has doesn't have the mobility and versatility and the accuracy. That Justin feels has. But I think that fields just came in. He was young and he was a freshman so they were kind of just trying to ease him in plus he didn't really fit their offense anyway. We'll just in fields. It's the best thing that happened to just leaving Georgia. Trust me but I think that they were easing him and then from was just better within the system that they wanted to run. Because Georgia's offense last years has been extremely conservative. Even to the point that they've got a game manager and they're handcuffing their game manager at times not letting him do some things so I think from fit into that better whereas eastern to me is never going to be the guy that's GonNa play within a system if that system is conservative. He's got the big arm and he wants to try to show it off and fields is just just way too towns for what they were doing on that. Offense is uncomfortable but also kind of bananas that Justin Fields One of the most important players in college football left school and gained immediate eligibility because he was called a racial slur by baseball player. Yeah that's kind of crazy. It's just it's uncomfortable and it's strange and it's one of those twists in College Football Lore like Oh remember when Randy Moss was at Florida State or oh you never leave. What the practice footage was like fulfilled of these strange twists stories. Where hey guess what now? He's at Ohio State. He's got in the college. Football playoffs is coming into this season. Heisman trophy contender and he was not the starter for the Georgia bulldogs. Not that long ago. It's a great question Wilson. There's always yes fantastic questions. I have a question for you. Who were your top five players taken in your twenty twenty one. Mock draft well sorts of Trevor Lawrence and I made this list Actually during the twenty twenty drafts so there and by the way we should point out that this the the order of the draft pick is not. It's because Wilson hates the Jaguars and pink reverse sportsline Super Bowl. Odds who has the lease the lowest the worst Super Bowl That would be the Jaguars Game Number One. Pick bengals have the next worse etc? Yes when you say that I was talking to the Jaguars writer for Jaguar Dot Com earlier today and this last question was so..
