"It reminds me to a certain extent of the jets where we put in mark sanchez from usc key and from day one he was our starter and he took us to the championship game and he wasn't perfect but we were able to run. The ball played good defense and we had a really good year. If i'm at now you every day you don't do that. You're hurting credibility with yourself in the locker. What is the point of saying that. You need to see andy dalton in the in the regular season he's been in the league for how many years longtime well fifteen years like. I think you know what you've gotten any dalton. So why would he say that. I think he asserts that box himself. In and i think if he could go back in time what matt now you would have done said. Hey i'll always do what's in the best interest of the chicago bears and right now andy dalton starter but every player will always be evaluated and kinda give himself a little wiggle room but he was so out in front saying that dalton's starter. He's now going into the offense to justin fields was going to help him become even better. And i almost even. If justin feels is the real deal the allen robinson can become a top five receiver for for for short term as well and he still is semi young. He's still twenty seven so he still has another five six years where he can potentially make a big impact. So i'm going with alamo missing over and also because of the fact that alabama senate is clear number one receiver in chicago. We don't know that about the more he might be. The most talented received probably but will stand darnold target him. Much some of the other guys. We don't know yet. So i'm going with allen bob woodson over him well just an allen robinson at somebody. I actually left off my list Do like to tally somebody. Who's probably around sixteen. Seventeen eighteen The fact that they franchise him and didn't offer him a a nother contract something that worries me. Long-term how much they really philip outing. So is this another tryout year foreign You know. I don't i don't see chicago as even though he produced last year. I don't see that as a a great offensive hotbed of targets. But i still wasn't left disappoint. I still thought he had a solid season. And i think there's some room for growth and he's only twenty five years old just a great points there about a chris godwin But i had a his teammate. Mike evans as my last receiver on my list. god is a little bit younger He did develop chemistry with tom. Brady i think he is going to catch a lot of balls. But mike evans has just been doing it year in year out and when it comes down to i no touchdowns or unpredictable but when they were in the red zone. It seemed like tom brady. Looked for mike evans. First second gronk third. And then mike evans four. I don't think that's gonna change. Because i think that they had great chemistry might have such a big receiver that he's just going to continue to get those touchdowns and we may see a fall off a little bit that he's not catching as many passes as godwin and maybe he doesn't get quite the yard. God does but if he's getting twice two touchdowns guy does that just evens it up. And that's where i got mike evans. Although i certainly see your case for for chris godwin the i think. The buccaneers were forcing the law. Mike evans a little bit at the end of last season so it could got two thousand receiving yards but he barely got there and i'm not sure where he finished Receivers last season..

The six podcast are these three sixty episodes. We do before the draft where we highlight a couple of top players and we devoted an entire episode to doing a deep dive as if we were scouting right cultivating those sources talking to coaches teammates. Anybody we can find to learn more about a player. And i feel like we've got a pretty thorough. Look coming your way here on justin fields. Yeah think is a very thorough though because we had opportunity to talk to a couple of coaches. No justin feels really really well Try coaches high school coach. We had a chance to talk to coaches data continue to foster development along the way his head coach at ohio state ryan day and then some of the other coaches and teammates also able to paint a picture on how justin feels has become one of the top prospects in this twenty twenty one draft. It'd be helpful to have somebody on. That's coached him to a championship and We do. I want you tell that story buck for those. That don't know. I wish i could say i could claim but what i can is. I watched a guy play at an extraordinary level at an elite eleven camp. And i think what really stands out to me about. Watching just feels when i i was exposed to when he was a high school going into his senior year just a raw talent daddy displayed. I mean you talk about someone who had the time was really built. like an nfl player Tremendous arm talent could make the throws and for a guy who came in really celebrated as dual threat. He shredded opponents with his ability to throw from the pocket and what was unusual about the way he did it At the time we were introducing what they call pure progression concepts where. It's not just your own Curl flat reads whatever. Quarterbacks are really tasked with reading across the field and for whatever reason it really worked with his game and his eye and he shredded and terrorized opponents with his ability. Do that and i think it gave us a preview of what was to come for him as a college player. I remember going up there. I remember visiting with him talking with him And was like talking to a tenure pro after it was over and visiting with you have having been around him for all time you liked. This kid is the real deal and this is a seventeen eighteen year. Old kid But you got a chance to coach. Watch learn and perform at an elite level. No pun intended There at the elite eleven. And that's kind of where. His journey began in terms of getting on the nfl's radar Say but it started well before that. And that's what we've accomplished here on this episode. But i think both guys have the ceiling and both guys have a little bit lower floor. It's funny because i think these three guys when we talk about them we have to kind of all talk about them together right because it is such a unique conversation right so i'm going back through in in looking at these guys right. We talk about. Justin feels may will trae last one. Has the shortest resume turns the amount of gain sixteen starts whatever. But then when you go and you dig deep into justin. Feels and zack wilson. Their stores are closing comfortable. Zag wilson obviously had the injury before last season. Where like the numbers weren't necessarily what you want. But then it pops last year third three touchdowns three interceptions you look. It feels numbers. Yes sixty three nine as i guess like a two year starter one and a half year start whatever you however you quantify this shortened season that they had that wilson is super talented super skill. Love the pocket presence deploys the way that he is able to play on the script or off the script The thing that you love and we'd never can get this scouting man. I would love to see them. Play more big time games within when you go back and you look at the previous season. He has some big time game. He showed up in some of those things. But it's that's lake. I think play action has to be a big part of it because you talk about him. Getting stuck on the primary read will play action clears all of that up. "You. What are your thoughts here on. The carson wentz listening to come and key overpaid underpaid. Who won the tree. There's just so many opinions out there. What's yours i mean my opinion is for carson wentz. This is best case scenario. I mean this time was up in philly. The the philadelphia fans didn't want him and he didn't want the philadelphia eagles anymore so he gets to move on to a place where he wants to go and he never made it public that he wanted to be an indianapolis colts. But this is the best place for him. Is frank reich. A guy that believes in them. You have a very good defense a good run game. Excellent offensive line some young weapons on the outside. But to me this is put up or shut up for carson. Wentz and frank right reich. You're staking your your career on this guy being what he was in two thousand and seventeen when you haven't had him and now if you're carson wentz you're in a perfect situation for yourself to resubmit yourself as one of the top tier quarterbacks in this league and if you don't do it i believe this is his last opportunity as a no brainer starter for any organization ryan. What's your reaction to the eagles having the six pick and potentially targeting a quarterback at the six spot. You know what i think. The eagles would be stupid to be messed up at quarterback again. Right you look at it last year carson. Wentz didn't play well. You drafted a guy in the second round so there were rumblings that people wanted to see him play and then he plays any outplays carson wentz and now you find yourself in this issue. Do you really want the do that. Couldn't read his press statement in his opening. Press conference to start to season the season with a quarterback controversy. And here's the other problem. Let's say. Trevor lawrence and anzac wilson go one two or go one three. And if you're picking where the philadelphia eagles are if you're not in love with the quarterback don't waste your pick. Don't put yourself in another bad position. And listen to you. Look at trae lance you look at justin feels and i know people are going to kind of compare these guys based on color but that's not it. I'm just talking about style of play. We're talking about two quarterbacks that extend plays the same way. that jalen hurts us. Two quarterbacks that can make all the throws but may read things a step through slow if you listen to some of the skull which. I don't believe about justin fields. Which are going to have quarterbacks. That are very similar at at very similar ages competing. And i don't necessarily know if that's the right thing for an organization starting over with the new coach when you have a guy that had some success in jalen hurts. Evaluate him seeing. If he's your quarterback of the future anythi is you don't waste at picking us to get better somewhere else.

Because i know that's what we're going to talk about for the majority of this process leading up to the draft and after lawrence. There's a little bit of a gap and then at zack wilson. And then there's a gap between gods trey lance from north dakota state and justin feels from ohio state. So i think he is clearly the number two quarterback in this class. The question becomes greenie. Is that the jets taking two or the jets gonna move out and allow a team like a carolina to that number two spot to take him. And that all depends on the domino's in terms of the veteran quarterbacks right now where does shawn watson wind up carson wentz. We know is going to get moved to chicago indianapolis. I think joe douglas. The general manager is kind of waiting. And seeing some of these other quarterbacks go and he's fielding phone calls he's not aggressively making calls but fielding calls to see maybe if they can move sam darnold and if they do exactly since the pick for the jets at number two and if not as i said i think the jets will move outta to and wilson will still wind up being that number number two overall pick in this class. I grew the. I've been saying for a while. I agree with you completely. He'll be number two. The question is who winds up making the peck. Then the other part of this is. I'm old enough to remember a time when we wondered if justin fields might supplant trevor lawrence as the number one draft now all of a sudden these the fourth quarterback off the board. How did that happen. You go back. And study games against indiana northwestern. And then the college football playoff national championship game against alabama. He completed around fifty two percent of throws with five interceptions. Those games in my opinion. You look at it physically. He's big. he's sturdy strong who mobile. He's got a big arm all the traits that you look for. But he likes to see his receivers. Come open and get stuck on that. I read very frequently. So you compare him with trae. Lance and i have identical grades on the to train. Lance didn't play the level of competition. Didn't play as many games as is justin fields but i think he processes the game a little quicker in terms of going from his first into a second and third and seeing the entire field. So it won't surprise me if it feels is third quarterback off the board. But i think they're kind of bunched together in that third tier of quarterbacks behind lawrence wilson and then the other two and then i want to ask you about the guy that you currently have fifth because i'm a regular listener of the first draft podcast and so i'm listening the other day to you and field. Yates and mel kiper talking about what was going on at the senior bowl and everyone is raving about matt jones. Your buddy mel had max jones moving this thing and i believe he has him sort of. I believe he hasn't projected higher than you have in projected. What do you see for mack. Jones as this process goes on the fifth quarterback in the first round. Well i think what's going to happen. He's matt jones is going to benefit from the fact that these four quarterbacks are gonna come off the board quickly and it's probably going to be cut because of trades moving up. College football: Georgia beats Cincinnati in Peach Bowl

Yeah and even some of it is in sports too. You know a little bit of it has to do with sports up. And i've never been happier to be involved in sports right now. I can tell you that this is a this is a good day to cure about a college football game because otherwise you might need. You might shift drink. But let's keep it on college football before we get to monday night because certainly there's plenty of analysis. I couldn't help but think of you. On on friday as cincinnati was holding on dearly and ultimately lost to georgia in the peach bowl just You had been way out front arguing for others to be included in the party and they certainly acquitted themselves quite well. Yeah unfortunately you know this. Perception is reality. But sometimes the realities are when you wind up. Paul with A magnificent championship match up. And i will concede that that's what we have. I mean let's face it. We're talking about the two premier programs with the two largest brands from the two cities that get the highest ratings in sports television columbus. Ohio being second in birmingham alabama. Being one we're talking about the the the cfp really getting very fortunate. I mean really really fortunate. Because you know i certainly didn't believe in ohio state To be clemson the way they did. And i saw enough of ohio state during the regular season to know that they did not perform anywhere. Close to that Until that game was played. Which i think gives you know you have to give a lot of credit ryan day for having his staff and really his own gain planning so schematically superior to davos sweeney and clubs. That's you know brent. Venables is an outstanding defensive coordinator arguably considered maybe with dave aranda. Now is the head coach the best in the country and they were absolutely woodshed. It by ohio state and they did it. Schematically with two tight ends what they call twelve personnel football speak and utilizing the tied in and other receivers in a way that they have not done all season long. certainly they didn't do any of that against northwestern football team that defensively had the their team in a position to possibly beat ohio state in the big ten championship. I mean if it weren't for trae sermons Who had an unbelievable record breaking performance rushing the football. You know ohio state. Does it win that game against pets. It's gerald steam. So i think it was a legitimate by most of that cover football on a regular basis that simpson. Just add way. Too much ammunition and from a defensive standpoint would be able to handle what Been a relatively Understandable offense to defend. You know if you take care of justin feels and you double alava at wide receiver. You should be able to handle them well. That certainly was not the case in this game. So the cfp gets break with this matchup but that doesn't stop the thought process that that cincinnati gave everyone a reason to understand my point of view on this and so many others feel similarly that this is a team deserves to be playing for something a lot more than they were against georgia. They were two yards away all on third into and really didn't have to convert the third to if all they had done is just run the football as opposed to pass it Georgia would have had twenty five thirty thirty five fewer seconds to work with to get the ball to field goal range for fifty three yarder to win it. So i would contend that cincinnati's not just not getting the two yards but just deciding to throw the football rather than run. It was the difference in winning and losing. And and i think if that had happened the narrative wouldn't just be all my god. How great a matchup we have. We know how state alabama the narrative would also be. God did you see cincinnati. You know i mean did you. And they put iowa state with two losses above them. They they they dropped them to spots. I mean cincinnati's case would have been so much different. Had they been able to pull that off against georgia. But but i think people that are smart enough. That really understand the grander landscape of college. Football get the point and that is teams like cincinnati belong the ratings. Prove it too by the way. The highest rated new year's six game on your employers air by far was the cincinnati georgia game that means the game against north carolina and by the way eight. Mp team's gonna wind up at the top four right but you know it was that was a glorified exhibition. It did not rate the way cincinnati's game rating with georgia. It just didn't so imagine if that game was cincinnati were game. That mattered. "I watched the clips of brian. Kelly press conference and he looked like he was exact exasperated. And i don't know if you're a notre dame fan. How do you feel about this. Because he's i mean he's a really really good coach. We do these top. Twenty five lists every year and brian. Kelly definitely should be in the top five and they have really good players. But i don't know and he's right alabama's done this to almost everybody. They actually didn't do it. "And we're taping this about an hour after a pretty stunning performance by ohio state crushing clemson in the semi final game and so we both had two games. There were both blowouts but the second one didn't go the way anybody thought rights to yeah to blow outs. One felt like the game. You expected alabama notre dame. The other one. I never in a million years that i think it would play out that way. And maybe that's my bad. Maybe i should have more faith in the buckeyes though having only seen them six times having only seen them play A couple big games. Nobody could have seen that coming. Nobody could have six touchdowns from dustin fields in snaps dominant performance. I think the thing i most underestimated was just how much fuel they were playing with from the For at the very least from last year's game that they've been holding onto this for twelve months Davos ballot played a role. Who's to say but clearly it was one of those situations where a team just comes out on fire. I hesitate to go down this road With you. But i'm gonna go there. Look you know what justin field pretty fantastic for the first three games of the season against lesser competition. And then he had that three. Pick game against indiana. Who's a good team was probably the best team. They played all season and then they played in the big ten championship game. The i will say this. I feel like of the two of us. And i'm not trying to pop on the back here I feel like of the two of us. I was a little more of a believer in having a little more believer in justin feels. Maybe than you were at least as a passer. And i think some of that honestly stems from hearing all the elite eleven guys. And seeing him there where they raved about him in ways to a degree that they said. He's probably the most talented player they've had come through their Or quarterback and he looked like that god and i mean. This was the had some great performances. Obviously the numbers. You put up last year and at times this year. But i mean on that stage. The one thing that jumped out at me and you are both at the national title game in that stadium. A year ago was when it was head to head because trevor lawrence look fantastic when he shredded alabama as a true freshman. And that's when the hype. I would say that's when all of a sudden everybody fell in love with trevor lawrence and he is gonna be the first pick in the draft and a couple of years from now and he's done nothing to undermine that he's been terrific off the field. No michigan is attempting to practice. But there's no guarantee that game goes on. so how does this committee Look at look at ohio state and what is the big ten due to try to help their their prize bull because it's all about ohio state in the big ten this year.
