"Alabama's morning news. I'm J t. Well, it's been almost a month now. Since that horrific crash on I 65 where eight Children died in that crash. It was June 19th and, uh, Sometimes it seems like it was a long time ago and other times. It seems like it was just yesterday and joining us now Michael Smith, who is the CEO with the Alabama sheriff's youth ranches, where these kids Were To talk about the celebration of life Memorial Service That's going on today in Auburn. Michael Welcome, and thank you so much for being with me, By the way, What time is this? Today? It starts today at Church of the Highlands on East Separate Avenue and Almond, Alabama at one o'clock today, and we're looking forward to celebrating all of our young people's lives that so tragically lost their lives that day. And I saw the I guess the findings on this was hydro planning. The weather was bad and that storm was coming through and the speed of a vehicle just caused this Chain reaction, I guess is the investigation concluded on this, Michael No, sir. It's not. It's a preliminary that they're talking about what happened. You know the NTSB. They and Aaliyah. They're the professionals at that, and they'll come out with. We hope within In the next several months, they'll have a final re enactment of the accident. And what happened and really Really? We just want to know what went on and and they should should have that in the next several months. Has been an outpouring of support. Obviously, in this community for these people in these families go fund me, launched over a half a million dollars so far has been raised. I guess that will help with funeral expenses and medical costs for those people that are still battling some injuries. Well, it's it's multiple things that that that money will go for. You know, it's um it's you know, Satan took a slaughtered us that day. And you 19th and, um, thank goodness all of our Children were certainly lovers of God, and we know where they are, And now we leave these ranches back here to run and continue to take care of the needy and And Children of crises in Alabama. And, of course, that will go to continuing our ministry to bring Children of Alabama that need to come in and be with us to give them a good Christian family home. Odyssey. This is so tough. I mean, it's just I think about this, and I think about my own kids. I think about families. Children have lost their lives that are in our family. And you know what comes to mind? And all of this, Michael, too, is that And I'd like you to address this for people listening right now that you know you mentioned Satan taking a SWAT at us on that ugly day. And you know, I've seen that parents and family members and people there. Close to Children that have died do so much better through their grief. When there's a relationship with God and talk to me If somebody is listening on you know why bad things happen to good people and and even believers in our world. Well, you know, JT, That's something to be honest with you. I struggled with that. You know, a few things in life will always remember where we were. And when we got the call, and when we saw them TV, whether it was 9 11 the tornadoes in Tuscaloosa Explosion of the space shuttle, But I'll never forget the feeling that I had that day. I got the call at my home and what I was doing and where all of that and we have the ranches. We've done a really good job raised in thousands of Children that need a good Christian family home. And you know Satan saw that happening with us. And how much better we were doing the ranches had. We had more Children than we've had in 15 years on our different ranches and and took a swing at us and and you question why, God, why did you do this to me? We're doing so good. These kids were coming back from the beach having the time of their life. Why did you do this? So you get angry. You go through anger and we handle our grief in different ways. But then you realize that You know, we serve one God and God has a plan and so what we have started and that's why I'm so happy to have this celebration that we've been through all the funerals. I don't think I can cry. Another terror, which I'm sure that will happen today again. But God has a plan for us and with outpouring and the embracing of these ranches of Alabama by our whole nation and our local communities. It's going to give us now the opportunity to make these ranches bigger and better than ever to help bring these needy Children and Children of crises into a Christian family home. And, you know, maybe that's God's plan. Jakey. That's what we're going with, and and we feel like that. People now know about our ranches and know that you don't have to travel overseas mission trip You don't have to do. There's nothing wrong with it. Don't get me wrong. But there's Children and young people right here in our own state that need help so bad and we're here to do that. So I'm mission and remember the legacy of these young people. Is going to be do a better job than we ever had. And we're just not going to let Satan keep us down. We're just not Amen. And I just keep reading, you know, going back to John. You know, the book of John and it's 16. You know where Jesus as I've told you these things so that in me, you may have peace. And in this world, you will have trouble. No doubt. But take heart. You know, I have overcome the world. So you know, I I surely believe that these beautiful Children's lives well in the long term, glorify God in all of this. You know, and which needs to happen and will happen in my opinion. Well, we're you know, we're dead Set. We're not going to let Satan and we're godly people. And we're here for the glory of God. And I'm so excited to be able to tell you today that this is I might cry over there. But we can discuss the driver of the van who was our director of ranch life there Tallapoosa County. She was severely injured that day and and was and just had a horrible time She's lost. She lost two nephews and that accident she lost her three year old. Son being and she lost her 16 year old daughter, Bella, and I can't imagine what she's gone through our stayed in contact with her. But she is actually coming to the celebration of life today and going to speak at the celebration of life. And I can't tell you what that does to all of our ranchers and all of our friends and family. We have a huge ranch family. And we're all going to be there today to celebrate with canvas and she's coming back to work, and she she feels just like I do. We're on a mission now to make these ranches so much better than ever, and to continue to just shove it right back down. Satan's thrown and show him that we and God are in control, and he's not Once again the service and the celebration of life will take place today Church to the Highlands in the auburn and it starts at one o'clock this afternoon, Michael. Thank you for sharing with me. God bless. And yeah, folks continue to pray for these families that have been affected by this. Thank you, sir. Hey, thank you so much. And you please do continue the prayers for this, uh, for this ministry that we have, because with those prayers and the good people of Alabama will continue to grow. Thank you, JT. "Or caught the stories of jeopardy. Answer No. That the declaration of Independence was actually passed on July 2nd, not the fourth, the fourth, bringing the day that they fully edited version came out. John Adams thought we'd always be celebrating the second of July with fireworks that did not work out. But there may be a reason for people to celebrate the second of July anyway, if in this case It would have been a year later, 17 77. It has to do with the state of Vermont and slavery and here to explain that is Mary Elliott, Museum specialist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Hi, Mary yell. It's nice to speak with you, Mary. A lot of what we talk about. When we talk about independence is it wasn't independence for everybody, and I was just talking about what happened in Vermont. Now, you should fill people in on that It was July 2nd 17 77 that always independent. Vermont became the first state to ban slavery, not just bandit but guarantee voting rights for African Americans, which was pretty much unknown at the time. But like everything else when we talk about this, it wasn't everything It seemed to be. You could not hold adults as slaves in Vermont, but you could hold Children and whatever we look at back then, even when it seems like good news, it wasn't totally what it seemed to be. I'm so glad that you brought up this topic because so often we talk about Slavery and freedom, and the lenses pointed in the direction of the south in terms of discussing slavery, But when you discuss freedom and think of the north, the North isn't so much divorced from the limits of freedom for African Americans. What Vermont did on July. 2nd 17 77 is very important because it became the first colony to outright banned slavery. But again, it came with its limits. There were some, um, opportunities to manifest one's freedom. But like in many of the northern colonies, the limits, Uh, gradual emancipation included where, Um people were guaranteed their freedom. After a certain years of apprenticeship after they reach a certain age, Um, and then you were limited in your movement, your ability to own property and many different things. So that's very important to note that this wasn't a perfect notion of freedom and that kind of ties in with, um, July 4th celebrations of 17, 76 and looking at how you have this liberated nation that was still maintaining slavery. It's always this paradox that's lingering. Um And what does freedom really mean? How is freedom really defined at that moment? And what does it mean? By the time we get to 18, 65 and quite interesting, early June 19th 18 65 a new meaning of freedom or more defined Version of freedom that's applicable to all. Yes, and let's let's talk about that. Because people hear about Juneteenth they you know they they're not exactly sure what happened. June 19th 18 65 has to do with Major general Gordon Granger, who and general order number three And tell us about that because some people think it's just, you know, like a made up holiday or something, but it's an important date in American history. Thank you. For that question. Juneteenth is a very important date, and it's become even more significant in the past few years, even though People have been Commemorating, celebrating Juneteenth for generations as early as when the event occurred in June, 1919 18 65, and that date marks the occasion that union Army General Gordon Granger entered into Galveston, Texas, accompanied by Union Army troops, including members of the U. S colored troops. And the announcement was made that the enslaved African Americans in Texas were now free keeping in mind that freedom had already come to them as early as January. 1st 18 63 with the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation. So we talk about this. Meaning of freedom and an imperfect freedom. Well, the fact is the Emancipation Proclamation only apply to African Americans who were enslaved in rebelling states. Those states that has seceded from the union and within those seceding documents. They mentioned slavery several times. And so it took a war the civil war to enforce that Emancipation Proclamation. Texas being the farthest rebelling state farthest West and They continued that fight in Texas until, of course, um, the union army entered into the state and was able to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. But here's what's important. The general order that General Granger issued on June 19th. He had the authority to write this general order and it states and pay attention to the words because it really does speak to this imperfect freedom. The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with the proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves. And the connection here to four existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor, the freedmen or advice to remain quietly in their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect it Military post and they will not be supported in idleness, either there or elsewhere. So that moment of June 19th, which is referred to today as June teen is important because freedom came to those in the rebelling states, but not to all its late people. It took the 13th amendment to do that. But what's also important to note is in this passage the limits of that freedom. Now you're expected to serve as a hired labor and the person who enslaved U is considered an employer. Can you imagine the limits of bargaining power for that hired labor? That's what we see what happens when you see those sharecropper contracts having to be defined and enforced through the Freedman's bureau and the notion that you have to remain quietly in your present home, which is a slave cabin. And the fact that your idleness the assumption that you will be idle is not supported. This is a general order that was issued by a union army general. It gives you a sense of what society how society viewed black people, whether in the north or the South, whether in the Confederacy or the Union Army. Yeah, it was a very limited freedom, you know, and even going back to what we started talking about, which was the Vermont thing where safe slavery is over. Very similar to what happened with the statement from Granger on June 19th 18 65 is that first of all, a lot of wealthy landowners in New England kept slaves anyhow, because that money you could pretty much buy off anybody, but a lot of them would just say Okay, there are actually servants now. Oh, can they quit? No. Can you shoot them if they run off? Yes. I mean, it wasn't It wasn't really freedom. It was. It was like kind of just changing the job title Exactly And the other thing you have to keep in minors. There were, um There were people in the north in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and other areas mean Who were engaged in shipbuilding and ongoing involvement in the slave trade, even after the international slave trade was made illegal. So there was still an investment in the commodification of African Americans. There was still an investment in bondage. And there was still this sense of African Americans as being inferior and That control that limit of freedom played out in places like while we talk about Vermont and Connecticut and Rhode Island in places like Ohio the.

"Was specifically about Galveston, Texas. The union troops went to Galveston on June 19th 18 65 and realized that Texas had not released all their slaves. And informed the slaves that they were free. They were already free everywhere else. But in Galveston specifically, and maybe across all of Texas, they were still slow to to release their slaves. The Democrats in Texas that were holding slaves did not tell them they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation actually took effect on January 1st 18 63. That's the document. That's the proclamation that Abraham Lincoln made that freed the slaves of the seceded states or those states that were that were that were separating from the union. He said. That's it. They're free. As of January 1st 18 63. The assumption was that the slaves in the north already we're free. Although I'm sure there's an argument to be made. There were still some most were free men. June. 19th was not a specific holiday federally because it was about what happened in Galveston, Texas. I want to talk about freeing the slaves and saying This is the day we should commemorate it. It should be January 1st. That's the 1963 that the emancipate the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. It was written sometime in 62, but in January on January 1st 18 63 is when it took effect. The idea that we somehow have Slave free day or something or free the slaves Day is just not true. It was the day you call it informed the slaves Dave, you want They're already free, but we weren't told they were And they had to be forcibly freed by the union soldiers. The Republican soldiers who came down and told the Democrat evil Democrats who were enslaving people that they couldn't enslave them anymore. So why would we take a day and celebrate that thing that happened on that day? When we already have a day that is Independence Day on July 4th if nothing else, the last slaves that were still being held by the evil Democrats in the South were freed on June 19th so they can now enjoy July 4th with the rest of us. So what We needed a specific day for that. He's a little bit nutty. There was also a financial reason why making Juneteenth a federal holiday didn't make sense. It's going to cost $600 million now to give people that day off $600 million of taxpayers money. So why does Congress care? Or why does Biden care? And then when Biden signs it as a national holiday, he says something about the stain on our history and the horrible this and we still to this day have to fix that. I don't know what you're talking about. Nobody is oppressed today. Nobody. We, by law have equal opportunity in this country. Yet for some reason, something that we litigated 150 years ago slavery keeps on being brought up by the party that enslaved everybody. The Democrats they keep on bringing it up. And if you're a member of Congress, and you dared not agree with Juneteenth, you're somehow evil and you like slavery, which is bogus. You're actually Commemorating the day Democrats were forced to no longer enslave free people. And I might add this As we see. People continue to bring up slavery and continue to live in the past and continue to try to separate us by race and change our culture. Let me remind you that their slavery today in much of Africa Today you're born into slavery in Africa. Nobody says a word because it's Africans enslaving Africans. You can't blame the white man I guess and their slavery in America today, the sex slave trade is real. It's happening across our border border. That's more porous now because of Harris and because of Biden yet for some reason, a bunch of this this old white guy In the White House. In the same party that were the racist. Historically a guy who I conduct Ament, his racism specifically, Joe Biden was talking about the stain and the this and that, as if somehow there are people still trying to bring back slavery in America, and it's just plain stupid. It's stupid. It's an American. It doesn't make sense. You want to commemorate June June 19th do so. And maybe you can talk to your state about doing it to make it. A federal holiday is actually re educating people and what it never was. There are Children who believe June 19th is the day that the slaves were freed. It's not I think that's the day the civil War ended its not That's just not true. You want to have a a full emancipation day. Find out the letter of the day the end of the war was signed. Maybe talk about that date, Juneteenth. This is something you people made up. It was only about Galveston and was it was only about Texas. It wasn't about freedom. It was about The people who are still enslaving the slaves who knew they were free. They should have been charged with crimes. It's not a national holiday. And then our reaction in this country is that we have to keep on getting up this this anti white hysteria, this white supremacy hysteria this depression hysteria that doesn't exist through critical race theory. The 16 19 project Juneteenth. We're just going to keep on doing it until what? We have violence in the streets every day everywhere. It's crazy to me. There are people listening right now who think I'm somehow our raise it? Because I dared come out and tell you the truth about June 19th that you probably didn't know. 88941 Paige's 889417247. Joe PAGs dot com are coming right back. Stay here. This is the joke. Exhale today..

"At mortgage talking text line. That's how you become part of the big program this afternoon, and it is always more fun when you avail yourself of that number, whether you are talking whether you were texting, But when you do call and you'll be talking to Kyle, he's the executive producer of the big broadcast. To get to me. You've got to get through him. So be nice, And that's the way to go. We got a lot to cover today. And first of all, it is. Everybody has pointed out. It is good to be back in the building. This is, uh I have been broadcasting from my super secret bunker. Whenever I've been fortunate enough to fill in for Jeff for Scott, it's been It's been an odd time. But now I am back. And, uh, Boy, things have not changed. Everything still looks still looks as a beat up as it was before Kyle. I'm not going to be honest, I don't think the keyboard has been wiped down in a year and a half. And I don't mean to come in and start complaining, but somebody was eating fried chicken in here and they didn't use a napkin. Carpet still needs a lot of work that's in tatters. But you know what? That's what makes. That's what makes being in person in the studio different than being at home. You know, here it's the Every grain of gunk that's on the wall or the floor. It's a piece of history. You know, there's something there's a story behind all of it. Uh, you know, the fact that the chair is falling over precariously to one side means that somebody was lounging and picking at the arm rest. So I am happy to be here, Especially today as we celebrate a brand new federal holiday. Yesterday. President Biden has signed into law making Juneteenth, which is tomorrow June 19th a federal holiday, but because it went into effect right away, and with Juneteenth falling on Saturday, federal employees got today off. A lot of other companies had already given the day off. I know my wife's firm. Had the day off. A lot of the folks here at good Karma brands have the day off, which is terrific, but you know we're working, and that's fine, too. It's one of those things that I know we have had a lot of discussions over the past year, trying to figure out If this was a good idea, and I think it is a great idea, I am very happy that the president took this step. We have not had a new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Day was put into effect. So I'm I'm all down with this. And if you're still wondering like me, because if you're honest and I will be I didn't know anything about Juneteenth till last year. And I think that goes for most of us. Most of us had no idea What it was. And why people were talking about it. And why. After all these years of us being in school, we didn't know anything about this. How can this be a thing? Let's not know about it well. Yesterday. The president the president, put that away. We have. We are now celebrating Juneteenth and Juneteenth represents if you don't know. June 19th 18 65. It's the date union soldiers arrived in Texas. To announce that the civil war was over, and slavery had been abolished. The issue there is that was 2.5 years. After the president President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was signed and declared slaves held in Confederate states free and two months after he was assassinated, So it took 2.5 years. For some states to finally come around and say, Okay, uh, you know, we'll start abiding by this new law of the land. There were a lot of other states that we're not going along with it, but You know, we tend to focus. We tend to focus on Texas in Galveston in that particular day. June 19th where things were going on, But there were Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia. Those states were still Operating under the Slave mentality. When this all went down when when the troops finally got to Galveston, But this has been a big thing and in the African American community People have been celebrating this for decades. Ever since this happened, it went away for a little while. Then it started coming back and it's morphed. Milwaukee has a long history. Of celebrating Juneteenth, and now everybody's going to do it. There are some people who are saying, Well, why Why is this an issue? Why are we Why are we paying attention? This isn't this going to be divisive, which was the main The main argument for one of the loan. House of Representatives members to vote against it. This was this was unbelievable. It passed unanimously in the Senate, and let's be honest. It passed unanimously in the Senate because Ron Johnson earlier in the week dropped his objection which he had been doing for a long time. So he decided All right. I'm he put his finger in his mouth. Held it up to the wind went. Yeah, we're not gonna this is I can't win this one, and he got out of the way. So when the Senate it was unanimous and then in the house There were only 14 members of the GOP who did not vote for this one was Tom Tiffany, a Republican from Hazlehurst, and, uh, he put out a statement that said A measure to recognize the holiday quote, fueled separatism by creating a race based independent stay and called the effort politicized. He was the only member of Wisconsin's delegation from either party to vote against the bill. So We now have another federal holiday. We are celebrating something that Is something.
