And he is so motivated and it's so exciting to see how motivated he is that it like I'm even more excited. It's GonNa be a crazy election for us our family and for everybody really. But. I'm working at the poll worker I was inspired and now I think Arlene has too many workers. So I'm waiting for my precinct to find to me but I'm very excited about that too. That's awesome. Thank you for signing up to do that. Yeah. It's a really scary election but man to get to have your first vote be in this kind of. Consequential moment given what trump has been doing around immigration what he? It's a, it's an incredible statement. So I think that's it's inspiring when he came to the United States in two thousand fifteen, he received his green card literally the day after the two thousand sixteen election and like it was the scariest moment but a big sigh of relief and we've just worked hard. To get him to become a US citizen, his naturalization ceremony had been postponed because cove it. Thank God. He was able to get in. June. And Yeah, it's been a wild ride, but we're ready. In the last sixty days after hard six months after a hard for years what are you doing to stay motivated to stay upbeat so aside, from being enraged all the time by scrolling sure I, try to channel that energy into different local groups around here in Charlotte North Carolina. So we have an indivisible chapter and they've tapped me to be the Leader, in their voter suppression efforts, which is huge. North. Carolina. As you may occur to fight voter suppression, you're not trying to suppress the vote. Yeah I'm not poor voter suppression anti voter suppression, and Voter Suppression. Yeah. So we're trying to stop voter suppression So we're working with groups like black voters matter they're getting a caravan to go around to different districts help get out the vote So we're making sure that role through district nine which tried to disenfranchise voters last time. I'm writing letters through vote forward. That's a good way to have a wine at the end of the night. Also making phone calls through like phone banking for you can helping to register voters and helping people to navigate all the different ways in North Carolina that you can vote here here that people. Just, doing trying she's writing letters with her Chardonnay. With her Chablis. I'm trying I'm. With Latasha. Group she's really trying really frame I'm really afraid and that's the only way that I couldn't get through the next sixty days is by doing something we're all afraid you can either be afraid and trying or just great. I think. When you finish reading your letters. To Democratic voters who maybe haven't voted in a while. Or when you're done with your meeting with. LATASHA S- group about turning out the vote. You open up your your laptop. You turn on your TV and look let's face it. No one has ever said in these conversations that they're watching something that they're proud of what are what are you watching I started watching Friday night life I've never watched that before compared to some of the reality shows we have heard today. That is that is operatives. Compared to some of the some of the choices people are making which I support to be clear. In cerebral path I'm not like going like trash. Amazing. But I mean the football and the God in Texas is still a little much for me so I'm trying to get past that. Okay. Okay. Well, just thanks for everything that you're doing and thanks for. "But they run all the way from little call up the stream edge type service berry that only gets five or six feet tall. You can't put it in the water but it can sure stand right at the edge of the moving water and or pawn for that matter and then we go on up to some of the trees like I have in front of my house that are now fifty five years old that I know of a little more than that. Perhaps that are standing Well nearly roof Ridge high on a two storey house. So they're into that twenty foot range then. I have seen some even taller. So Service Berry right now is is looking like a firework in terms of clear explosion. There are either single stem or multiple stems coming up and the whole head of the Torri. You can't well. In many cases you can't see through it for all of the white flowers they will then turn into what's called June berry still service very by name still. Technically a plant called AMMO Lenka A. M. A. L. A. N. C. H. E. R. and of the mini kind but they will be furnishing us with more fruits to fight birds for just one of those things. It's called June Berry and then right now they it signals to the whale did signals to the Indians in the area that when the shad blow was in bloom which is also called service bury. It was time to go fishing and the Olin Tangent and the various rivers around Ohio So Mother Nature is still telling US things based on flour based on growth of plants and even to the point of winning officiant very nice. Where would you put a service berry? What kind of got put him in? A many. Many many many places One I mentioned a short he can go along the Stream Bank and there have been occasions. the well of the several types one well. One of the several cultivars that are trimmed as single stemmed trees are actually street trees. They'll they'll hit that twenty even twenty five foot range in time and they're used now as street trees then we go onto private property and all kinds of areas in the case of my home My the way. My house faces onto a street and street corner. I didn't want the STUCCO sticking up two stories high and and having the sun bounce off of it all afternoon so I planted three service berries off that corner. They have then hit that twenty foot range there unfortunately starting to go the wrong way Getting long in the tooth if you will. They're they're still alive and well but they don't flower spectacularly so corner of a bigger home Or Taller home. I should say And for that matter just playing a spectacular plant to have in a background of Even the back corner of your property where you want to have some color and interest because the color of interest of this treat is right now the flower then it becomes what is called June berry because the fruit ripens in early to mid June period. When that is eaten by Mir the birds and then we have just a good-looking Cherry size leaf of a bean green. Then we go into fall color. Which is anywhere from yellow to burgundy and the whole range in.

"Re Valentine's day happy love dates now you are of course sort of the cocktail may even around after man ice who makes IT right we were just looking at the I was showing pictures from the Fillmore last night the ice sculptures that you guys did were fantastic but I company in Minnesota I in Minnesota is we do our thing nice yep all things out of frozen water not drive I country yeah yeah yeah you can if you're you know vacationing in Jackson Hole Wyoming and you're having a little soiree you can have our eyes overnighted tia and people deal yeah I know yeah twenty dollars wasn't like for twenty cubits it's a hundred dollars for eighty rocks and that includes shipping okay so there you go you're having a big fancy whiskey party well considering we just talked about the fact that Brady Carlo tickets are going for six hundred fifty dollars on stuff you guys are joking there was like a bargain Hey congrats Randy right okay okay great scalpers who are the ones right probably making the money on the step Hudson what I'm saying but that's what we're here to talk we're here to talk about cocktail in because I think one of the things about Valentine's day is that you you know you're either going to go out yeah you're gonna have like a big night out great option which is a great option and there's plenty of you know ice out there in October sponsor but if you want to have a night in that doesn't mean you have to give up the idea of having a fifty cocked and you could do both right can give up what if what if you just major your guy you're gala nice cocktail home and then took him or her out for a nice dinner that's that's yes could do both yeah you could do both let's talk about the why don't people why do you think people don't cocktail at home as much as they should good question and thought about that these people I don't know where they're not speak or not my people I mean my husband is like a grandma at six o'clock every night the man makes a cocktail you make them old fashion he does every day it's a clown mixes is own old fashioned yes he does not just poured in from Tattersall he's as maple syrup he does like the Tattersall but no he uses maple syrup he he's cheap so hell by that Evans Larson's whiskey well you know what I'm talking about I don't know like some cheap Evan Williams yeah help we'll use that for the whiskey the and yeah hello it'll bidders and the oranges and he's on the phone so I think you know kind of to your question one of the things you know in in any pursuit is the collection of a bunch of details is what makes something compelling yes and ice is one of the details and cocktails the the other thing is you know especially talking about old fashion is the sugar you can really what what's really kind of interesting to me right now is this is creating interesting simple service not just sugar and water right so basically any simple serve that I'm making these days is using a sugar and not water for example in that's interesting these cocktails that I wrote for on the pop of they're doing next week we I made a a cane sugar just plain sugar simple Sir but instead of water and using two thirds high biscuits tea and then one third care care fresh orange juice yeah it's just a way of you know introducing other layers and flavors into a cocktail there's another one that I'm really fond of his plane cane sugar and Rozay I was a simple syrup yep yep when you can just go into use on over talking about civil service if you guys are no it's just basically you put the liquid and the sugar and you cook them together until the sugar dissolves and that's another detail as if you can get away with not introducing heat though yeah you really want to do that especially if using fresh juice or what but I was wondering you know use a blender if you have it I'm on low speed if possible or if you do if you don't have a blender young definitely can warm it up on the stove but just use really gentle heat race and with a larger superfine sugar like shell to better yeah yep yep and then that's going with insurers you know use another thing with whiskey that I like to use as most of our sugar which is a really on refined very dark very molasses seizure yeah that's really great you are doing such cool things you're the person that inspired me to make all these drinks are ups yeah yeah with us yeah I'd like to cut all the June berries off my trees and I made like a June berries Sir up yeah I turn that into a strong we still get the watercress memo yeah that's that's was it had a yeah whatever is best for them so that's I was talking to a buddy other day about the cocktails that really inspired me the the four cocktails inspired me the most and that is definitely one of them that I had for the first time in Los Angeles at a place called the Walker and it just was the just off all my gosh I just advise me about it how do I do it well how do I do it it's the Walker and does a lot of are they did a lot of can high and molecular gastronomy type techniques with C. V. those easy thing system always.

"It is a up Friday morning October fourth will handle here and the morning crew top stories we're covering it this morning the impeachment Chow course impeachment issue keeps on going to actually getting bigger and I thought it was not going to be this big a conversation with Ukrainian president seems to be also I did stock market is up because the US has added a hundred thirty six thousand jobs less than expected we're a fifty year low three point five percent and the numbers all we skew weird because the way the government leaves unemployment is if you've been unemployed for or whatever sixteen weeks twenty two weeks and you're no longer work I and you're still you're still looking for work you falling off. you're no longer in the unemployment less because you have to be looking for work with the next number of weeks is very strange all right off like Jamie. now this little gal who Greta as you know what's your last name she's a Swedish get him there June berry yes thank you Tuesday June Barry Swedish name is not. she has become the poster child of the younger people getting involved in the environmental movement. end of the environmental movement is obviously gaining some big lakes because out why well because Israel. because global warming is real. because the use of fossil fuels and its exacerbating our climate change issue is real so one of the things she's talking about is flight shaming. no commercial flying accounts for about two percent of global carmine missions in twelve percent of all transport emissions. Seoul. what's going on what's what's this flight shaming. well flight shaming effectively well it is it change you from flying on airplanes. you shouldn't fly on airplanes. take buses take trains actually trains are the best because that trains have the least impact at least foot print hello trains on actually leave footprints because they move but that is a different issue entirely. and so it's all about if you're on trains you're not flying the emissions are far less especially per person of course and all of a sudden you're helping the environment. and let me tell you one in five travelers is flying last. now is this flight shaming. propels people to actually shine air travel for the sake of the planet the Serbian six thousand western travelers. so this survey kept on going environmental concerns is shot would keep denting air traffic. and you've got activists who are moving into. forcing people.

Almost every plant has some sort of fall color the ones that would give her read though starting with a fairly fairly sizable vibe. Burnham called Winter Third W. I N. T. E. R. T. H. U. R. It's a Maroon Dark Maroon Leaf. It has has then what's called a droop fruit. I believe correct and it's it's half the size of a grape and just about the color of green purple grape. Fragrant Sumatra is gross AMAC. I happen to have that around the base with three toughest nails. it is putting up at the tree. The root system of the the tree is a few weeds and keeps on keeping on it has a good looking fall color female spice. Bush is bright right yellow. Now that's not going to be the color she's after but we come into common witch. Hazel which is again a little off of the the norm arm as far as getting into reds but it's usually a rusty orange type of thing then well June berry or service Berry and the reason is is called both is that June Berry. The fruit has actually developed turns from green to less green two more red to purple. You have to to fight the birds then it has a wonderful rusty red fall color in most cases father guilt well and there are many varieties of of service berry from I'm probably only hit heights well taller persons at six foot or so on up to about fifteen twenty feet then there's a plant called old fuck. Gila it is a Shrub I have seen it whether it's a giant one hour standard when if you will ask for the standard planet is is probably your best bet because the the big old fashioned one. I've seen unmanaged period overdose arboretum. I've seen it eight or more feet wide and probably eat feet tall so it it and at the same time I know where there are a dozen of them. On each side of a major is your walkway into a business building facing south hot dry miserable on sloped ground it still holds up and when it comes uh-huh fall it goes into red orange red and when you're off oh one hundred or more feet from that entrance almost looks like as a fire burning earning on both sides of the entrance. That's a good one. There's another plant that goes into the burgundy-coloured. There's a dwarf of it and a standard size. It is called I T. "Buries? It takes a lot of different locations. It'll do great in full sun. It will also do great in part shade. Zone four. So it's tough durable. In the springtime, and I liked the clump form, that's why I picked that one out specifically that sold more than a single stem. But in the springtime just loaded with beautiful white flowers, which are absolutely gorgeous. Those white flowers are followed up by a really nice about an inch and a half long kind of an oval shaped. Nice dark green leaf. And as soon as those leaves come out all of a sudden, the flowers that were there form berries, and those berries are absolutely wonderful to pick fresh and eat in your cereal or wherever else you wanna eat them. But service, berries are outstanding. You fight fight. The bursts for forum for about a week though, you'll you've got service to pick. And and the wildlife likes it as well, then in the fall, great red fall color. So you get multiple seasons of interest pretty easy to grow tough, durable sun or partial shade smaller tree. I like it. And I'm surprised that I never have featured. Service berry as my plan pick of the week. So that's what we picked service berry. Interesting story. Now, they say neither one of these probably are true, but stores way back when that was actually called. It's common names, there's many combinations for this. By the way, service berry is called Shad blow shed Bush shed would service berry Sarbaz, June berry sugar Plum wild Plum. There's all bunch and Chucky chuckling parrot ever understood that one, but the service berry supposedly came from the fact that win this flowered in the springtime in states. Where it froze a lot really deep over the wintertime, and you couldn't bury people because the ground was frozen when the service berry would flower, you was an indicator that the ground was thought enough that they could go ahead and have the funeral service and bury the people that they weren't able to bury over the winter works. I mean, this is stretching a little bit. But that works the. Shad blow comes from the fact that her Shad berry comes to the fact that the Shad runs in New England streams right about when the tree is in flower. So they called it the Shad barrier Shad blow, and that's where that came from. And I can take that one as well. But anyway, it's always fun to see where these names came up from. And by the way, Alan Armitage's book about naked, ladies and other plants in the garden and how they got their names. That's a great book. And it covers a lot of these things and therefore with stories about how they got the name. But anyway. That's the pick of the week. So you can see all of this on our special website at Ron Wilson, online dot com or take a quick break. We come back. We'll jump into the guarding phone lines. "Word for you. Stoop and your coffee and all those warm things. Yeah. I someone told me what they're like you are this. And this is what I am. Okay. Majority shorter ajar hoarder 'cause I make my soups. And I put my Mason jars. And I make my salads. And I put them in Mason jars. Oh, yeah. And then I'm like freezing like leftover stews. And every everything I cook I freeze and put into Mason jar. Dotes glass, it's you can keep using. And you just ended up in the microwave. So I'm always walking around with like a Mason jar full of some random strange looking. Idea to not use plastic. I might be in the same boat there. And I mean, if you have like, I just I freeze everything because walking around it's much easier frozen jar. They're really tight sealed tight, actually. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, I'm a pickler Kanner. So a lot of those from this in my Crafter, and that's how I sort all my stuff. I have Mason jars it's really they're quite handy. Your order to I know. Don, are you a her com? Yes. Because my mother makes homemade jams jellies pickles anything. She's just like I mean, she like Martha Stewart, and she sends it to me. Then I heard her jars that she sends in reuse them. Stephen. Oh, yeah. Okay. So Christmas time. That's what's on my list of what I would like from Utah. Something from your mom. Oh my gosh. She would love that just one thing. Yes. This you pick your well. You like Jerry jam. Okay. It's kind of un-american if you don't like. Very. Who are you? She I mean, we have our own blueberries from our our bushes, and she she makes the best blueberry jam. Wow. Very chunky. I did do something Alexis along these lines that would make you laugh. We I live in town home group. There's eight of us in Saint Paul right by the capital salts. It's like all these houses on the same block. Right. Yeah. And we have these trees called service berry trees, and they have these big giant berries that fall off the tree and the birds love on, but they're kinda messy berries. I was talking to my neighbor because I'd never I'd never really paid attention at my old house. I didn't have these trees. One year some guy came by and asked if they could pick the berries. Apparently, you can like use them and muffins and stuff. What is it called service, berries or a few and berries June berries? Okay. Yeah. Is it like a raspberry or like? It's more like a blueberry they start out red. And then they get really dark by the end of the season. Okay. And you can pick. I'm kind of all the way along and one day. I was on weekly dish. And I don't know what we were talking about. But I got this idea that I wanted to make like a drink syrup. So I went home, I harvested, the berries from the trees the syrup that was amazing. And then I brought some to the neighbor and he was like. You made this from our trees like he thought I was like an alien from outer space. It was so funny. He said, well, what would we do with this? Can we like he drinks? I'm like, you can just put it like if you have like a vodka tonic or vodka soda just put a little in there. He was like, well, okay. Anything else can make pancakes. Muffins like toes? Just go to town. Anything my husband's like, yeah. Neighbors don't necessarily want to eat your homemade, let alone something you harvested from their tree. Are you kidding? I thank God every day. I had a neighbor like that. We'll see. Bring him desserts because if you make like a pie or something and then the next day, maybe you have one for breakfast. But no one. Yeah. Here's more food. They are in their eighties. Situation. Today. I always have stuff texted you and asked to bring broth because I wanna taste totally have I probably have thirty jars in my freezer. So I went home, I harvested the berries from the trees. The syrup. That was amazing. And then I brought some to the neighbor and he was like. Marry me you made this from our trees like he thought I was like an alien from outer space. It was so funny. He said, well, what would we do with this? Can we like? Yeah. Yeah.
