COVID-19 Surge in the US: The Summer of Hope Ends in Gloom

"Summer. That was supposed to mark america's independence from kovic nineteen is instead drawing to a close with the us more firmly under the tyranny of the virus with deaths per day. Back up to where they were in much. The delta variant is filling hospitals sickening alarming numbers of children and driving corona virus deaths in some places to the highest levels of the entire pandemic school systems that reopened the classrooms or abruptly switching back to remote learning because of outbreaks legal disputes threats and violence from republicans have erupted over mosque and vaccine requirements. The us death toll now stands at more than six hundred fifty thousand with one major forecast model projecting able top seven hundred and fifty thousand by december. I it wasn't supposed to be this way more than six months into the. Us vaccination drive president. Joe biden held a white house party on july fourth to celebrate the country's freedom from the virus and other political leaders had high hopes for a more close to normal summer. The summer wave was fueled by the extra contagious delta variant combined with stock resistance to vaccinations that formed along political and geographic lines. Said dr stan vermond of the yale school of public health. The us recorded twenty six thousand eight hundred deaths and more than four point two million infections in august. The number of monthly positive cases was the fourth-highest total since the start of the pandemic the twenty twenty one delta driven onslaught is killing young americans at a much higher rates than previous waves of the pandemic in the northeast last spring. The sun belt in the summer of twenty twenty and the deadly winter surge around the holidays even before the delta variants became dominant experts. Say there were indications that large gatherings and relaxed social distancing measures will fueling new cases exposing a floor in some republican governors plans not to enforce distancing or mask mandates

Should We Have an American History Month?

"The fourth of july you know. I just felt compelled to start an american history month on a local kind of discourse. And just because i felt left out of all the history months So i i don't know if you wanna touch on that you maybe your take on you know trying to nationalize that as an american history month you know. Just bring everybody together rather than divide us spy individuality of individual heritage first of all. Thank you for calling. And i love jacksonville. Florida it's great. I want to say you're exactly right we have. Lgbt pride month we have black history month. We have all these different. Social awareness causes what used to be. Kind of an american pride month used to be july fourth which was the founding of our nation july second but july second third and fourth the founding of our nation which of course now has a competitor with june eighteenth. We went all in on that particular issue and we were vindicated as people were canceling the july fourth parade. And we're highlighting out of a black power parade. Can't wait for that news cycle to come back again. We will be proven right on that as we said we have a summertime competitor against july fourth independence day that abraham lincoln had four score and seven years ago. Our forefather's sought nation. He pointed directly july. For seventeen seventy six. Because he knew that day was the day that self government went from an idea to a reality. That's a big deal a deal for all human beings. The declaration of independence is a moral document. Make some moral claim that when in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people dissolve ties with that of another goes on to say but among these are life liberty and the pursuit of happiness the laws of nature and nature's god. They are appealing to a natural law principle. It's incredibly important. And i want to just say that. I wish we had a country that could unite on universal american principles but we are now gone into sectarianism. Identity. -tarian ism which does not take a lot of sophistication.

Ari Fleischer on Joe Biden's Worst Communication Blunders

"So whether the president's a democrat or republican is a good strategy to say. I'm not answering that question. To turn your back and walk away ari as former white house press secretary. I'm the only thing he could have done. Worse was going to maybe the july fourth holiday weekend and when he was asked about afghanistan. Say i only wanna take happy questions. I mean i guess when you compare what he did yesterday to what he did in july. This is only the second worst communications blunder. He's made and when it comes to body language not just what comes out of. Somebody's mouth but this video that is truly one of the most viral videos in the last twenty four hours of him apparently looking at his wristwatch as even his wife was holding her. Her heart hand on heart is the cost. It's coming off. The military transports dover air force base. This president let me ask you. Does the president come back from that image for people who are against him because he for him because he's not donald trump he can do no wrong but for most americans who actually wanna make fair valuation of who we have is the commander in chief. This is daunting and sebastian. This counts this resumes. This is deeply important to the american people. It's about better national honor to veteran military. It's about our promises around the world. This is not your typical shining object so to speak that politics is full of and i think americans are realizing now is we elected somebody just not up to the task

"Percent. That's the chunk of american adults that are now at least partially vaccinated against cove in nineteen. The milestone comes about a month later then president. Joe biden's fourth of july goal but as white house corona virus coordinator. jeff. Zion said monday. There's been a recent increase in vaccinations with these ongoing efforts. There's a strong sense of progress and you see it in the number of shots were getting into people's arms each day over the past few weeks we've seen a nearly seventy percent increase in the average number of new people getting vaccinated each and every day in the last seven days alone. Three million americans have gotten their first shot. That's the highest seven day total since july fourth. And just today we hit seventy percent of adults with at least one shot including ninety percent of seniors with at least one shot these are significant milestones in our fight against the virus. Wet Notes - 7-4-21

"This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio for sunday july fourth two thousand and twenty one first up today i wanna talk about re fest two thousand and twenty one this october. The reef environmental educational foundation will again be holding refenced from thursday october fourteenth to sunday october. Seventeenth in key largo. That's four days of some great activity. The festivities kickoff on thursday. And one o'clock. You can then get a couple of days of diving in on friday and saturday morning with a two tank dive from either key divers amaury dive resort or essence. Those charters run about ninety dollars and they go out at eight am. If you wanna do a kayak tour you could also do that. For sixty dollars with florida bay outfitters. There are seven afternoon workshops and seminars and activities at john pennekamp park the coral reef restoration foundation. The history of diving museum and the florida keys. Wild bird sanctuary. Wow this sounds like a great event. Unfortunately i won't be able to make it down due to a family obligation but this sounds really good. Be sure to check out repressed. That's reef fest. Two thousand twenty one on their website. Well who watches the tv. Show curse of oak island. I think matt has watched every episode. And i think they're still searching for treasure but i came across an interesting article about one of the guys on the show. I guess tony sampson had a strange situation happen about a year ago tony's frequently on the show and he runs a tour company called salty door. Salty dog tours. Well he was taking some tourists out when one of his guests hat blew off so quickly turned the boat around to fetch the hat. And that's when he spotted something else a voter in the water. Apparently the boater was on his maiden voyage with this new boat when it capsized and he couldn't get to his life jacket because it was tied to the boats seat ono so tony fortunately rescued the voter in what is called the oak island triangle triangle. I guess the boat subsequently washed up on oak island now at least those guys found something there about a year ago. Olympus announced that they were getting out of the digital imaging business and that they would not be making cameras any longer and that would have been a shame if these Tech this technology went by the wayside. I really liked my Olympus t g six. well don't worry. A new company named 'em digital solutions is producing the old olympics. Cameras binoculars audio gear. They took over in january. Two thousand twenty one. Their website is get olympus dot com. Now if you want to know more about the company checkout oem dash digital solutions dot com. This company is based out of tokyo. And it's led by sha guinea saga motto all digital solutions employees about two thousand people with evaluation of twenty seven billion yen or about three hundred and thirty three million. Us dollars the oem comes from the nineteen seventies oem solutions that they put in place to make cameras smaller more rugged and quieter. This is great news especially for us olympus fans. Here's some sobering news out of florida. The manatees are under stress as of june fourth. This year. Seven hundred and eighty two manatees have died in two thousand twenty one alone and that's a one hundred and fifty one percent increase from the three hundred and thirty one that died during the same period last year to put this in perspective. The record number of deaths for manatees in a year is eight hundred. Twenty one or eight hundred and twenty four and that was in two thousand eighteen. This increase is so dramatic that representative vern buchanan from florida wrote a letter to the us fish and wildlife services to change their status from threatened to endanger and that's the highest level of protection here in the us. The florida manatee used to be on the endangered list until two thousand and seventeen when their numbers rose. Above six thousand six hundred they now estimate a census of about seventy five hundred but as we can see that number is going in the wrong direction. Now what's the cause food availability. The seagrass is being killed off by oversaturation of nutrients and the manatees simply. Starve to death. Not sure how a change in status will solve the sad scenario but we need to start someplace. Well it's summer. And i know that a lot of people like to catch up on summer reading while they're on vacation we'll scuba diving. Magazine just published a list of books that you might consider in their armchair adventure section. A couple of book stood out. One of them was in oceans deep courage innovation and adventure beneath the waves. And that's written by bill steve. And it's a history of our underwater presence. He covers submarines saturation diving and recreational gear. Bill also goes into the impacts of aro vs versus in-person exploration. You can pick up this book in ocean deep for about fifteen dollars in paperback. Now the second book is exploration deep ocean the first descent to the bottom of all five of the world's oceans and it's written by josh young. The book covers the exploits of victor scovill and his team on their history-making mission. You can find this book in hardcover for a little over twenty one dollars time to kick back with some good summer reading and finally here on wet note if you're a collector of vintage gear or want to start mark your calendar for the vintage scandal auction on july seventeenth. The auction is run by the nation's attic and you can register at live. Auctioneers dot com now. The auction starts at ten. Am central standard time. You can go to the site now and take a peek at all the cool stuff you can also register embiid early. The first part of the auction folks who focuses on vintage scuba gear from the nineteen forties to the nineteen seventies things like regulators knives mask cetera. Then it switches to maritime artifacts and closes out with the really expensive stuff. Those classic military commercial hardhats. I missed the last one. Because i was out diving. But we'll definitely try to tune into this next one get set up early and register. It moves pretty quickly when when the auction goes off. And don't miss out on that special piece of scuba history. Well that's it for wet notes. For sunday fourth two thousand and

President Biden Optimistic Despite Falling Short of July Fourth Vaccination Goal

"Biden is a major rebound in the economy and in our lives. This holiday weekend as the country marks an accelerated return to normal still challenges. Remain with the white house falling short of its july fourth vaccination goal. Monica alba is covering the president firing up the barbecues and air force one this holiday weekend as americans come together on the eve of independence day. The biden administration's top officials fanned out across the country from nevada and michigan to maine new hampshire. The president first lady and vice president blanketing the nation. Today in what they're calling. The america is back together tour giving new meaning to the fourth of july by marking our independence from the pandemic though it was hard to believe. I think that we would actually be able to be together on the fourth of july. Still victory over. The virus isn't being declared just yet. The white house will miss. Its own goal of partially vaccinating. Seventy percent of american adults by tomorrow nearly sixty seven percent of those eighteen and over have received one dose while forty seven percent of the public is fully vaccinated heading into the celebrations. The president warned those who haven't gotten their shots yet concern that people who have not gotten vaccinated have the capacity to catch the variant the white house announcing it will deploy surge response teams to hot spots as fears grow over the highly transmissible delta variant

Mississippians are paying the least to seventy five. While the vast majority of us are traveling by car. Two point one million people went through. Tsa check points on thursday people already. People can't wait to get out. Can't wait because the surge airline traffic came on so fast. Many airlines weren't ready didn't have enough planes now. Planes are full. United airlines ceo. Scott kirby now expects a surge of returning business travelers in the fall. I think zoom is going to be a great replacement for phone calls. But it's not going to be a great replacement for in person interacts. Meanwhile amid a staggering. Thirty two hundred reports of bad passenger behavior this year including onboard fights. More hourly wages for non-supervisory roles in leisure and hospitality industry up two point three percent huge games. Why Do Americans Celebrate the Fourth of July with Fireworks?

"Does this sound familiar at all. Without a visual clue it might be a little hard to figure out. But that's the sound of fireworks. Many of you are curious about how these celebratory explosions work. And why we use them. Historians and archaeologists think fireworks started in china. Maybe as early as twenty two hundred years ago and they've been used in europe and other parts of the world for at least eight hundred years in the united states where our show is based they've become a big tradition on the fourth of july. So hi my name is nicholas in six years old. And i live in plymouth michigan and i want to know why people do fireworks on the fourth of july. Thank you bye while nicholas. Americans have been celebrating. July fourth fireworks since seventeen. Seventy seven the first anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence. John adams was one of the people who signed that document in seventeen. Seventy six a year earlier declaring their wish for the american colonies to become independent from england. Afterwards adams wrote to his wife that he wanted that day to be celebrated with lots of parades shows bonfires bells illuminations. Adams was a well known person. In the early days of the united states he later became the first vice president and the second president so his wish would have been shared with others as well and so on the one year anniversary of the signing. The city of philadelphia had a big celebration with thirteen fireworks. One for each of the original thirteen colonies. Now john adams didn't come up with this idea entirely on his own. English royalty had been using fireworks for national celebrations since at least the thirteenth century. Which went fireworks came to europe. They were widely in use by the fifteenth century. That's about six hundred years ago. But they were hard to find in the early days of the united states so celebrations back then often included guns and cannons more than actual fireworks.

"Joined by arts and culture reporter elliot williams and breaking news editor lori. Mccue welcome to the both of you either. Hate jonathan so fourth of july weekend is upon us already. We have had a number of announcements over the past few months about what is cancelled and what is on for the holiday l. It can you give us a quick rundown of what people can expect. Sure thing So an april the national park service canceled the national independence day parade for the second year in a row but earlier this month mayor. Muriel bowser announced that the fireworks display on. The national mall will take place as planned. It starts at nine pm. At the lincoln memorial reflecting pool on july fourth other popular events in specific neighborhoods are back on. I'm thinking specifically of the fifty fifth annual palisades parade in the capital hill. Parade along barracks row. Both are welcoming families back for hotdogs fireworks in outdoor fun also of note. The capital fourth concert is going virtual this year due to the pandemic. Pbs is prerecording performances in broadcasting at eight pm on the fourth or laurie tell us about any food and drink deals. That are out there. And i'm thinking that there are probably still lots of people that are leery of crowds and will probably be celebrating mostly in their backyards. What about grill kits. Yeah i gotta say with how hot it's been. The last thing i wanna do is stand over a fiery girl but listen grilling is fourth of july tradition right. So if you're going to do it. I would recommend doing it with the assistance of some local restaurants on there. Lots of opportunities around the region to find your typical grilling fair milan's downtown. They have their famous burgers central. Lena has sausages and lots of delicious sides but i'm also heartened to see lots of Sort of less expected options. If you're a fan of lebanese taverna like i am. You can get a whole package of food to make it home from like their coffee kebabs. you can add on chicken sh- norma and hamas and lots of other sides and for the pesca tyrians in your life There's baker's daughter in ivy city their packaging big grill kits that you can cook at home and they come with king salmon which is sort of a little twist on your typical barbecue and you know what if you're like me and you don't want to do any work on your holiday. Some restaurants are throwing parties or offering special holiday dishes like immigrant food on pennsylvania avenue. They're serving special fourth of july pancakes. Which intriguing there's via sophia the restaurant downtown they're hosting a really big barbecue feast but maybe my favorite option that i've seen around town is from sticky fingers the vegan bakery. They've got this desert kit. That includes a giant sharable chocolate chip cookie. Like those ones used to get as a kid on your birthday Plus they'll have chocolate and marshmallows in case you have a backyard bonfire option and it's called a giant sharable chocolate chip cookie. But you don't actually have to share it looking forward more generally to the long holiday weekend elliott where we're gonna find you. Yeah well other than eating one of the giant chocolate chip cookies that lori mentioned. I've always wanted to go to george washington's mount vernon so i'll be checking out their celebration tickets for the evening. Fireworks show are already sold out. No surprise there but during the day they'll have an eighteenth century hot air balloon on display some daytime fireworks over the potomac and some reenacting from washington himself not.

There number was both yesterday. Domestic flights should peak on july fourth and international flights will peak at the end of june. Really try to look ahead for the year and plan trips that you might have later on for weddings or birthdays. The restrictions unchanging travel plans have eased up. Which is good news. So it's better to change or cancel a flight than be stuck with booking super expensive flights last minute but my psychic finance senses are tingling and do for sea change fees getting reinstated later this year so book

"By July fourth mayor Eric Garcetti agreed it's fine to be hopeful but ultimately officials will rely on science and part of the re opening plan requires more testing L. A. was the first city to offer free testing to anyone who wants it and it's unclear though if everyone who wants it has been tested or has stopped testing we're going to talk about what's happening now in LA county with Jonathan fielding former director of the LA county department of public health and an expert in public health preparedness and communications he teaches now at UCLA welcome the program thank you good to be with you I have to have your well what are your thoughts on this idea that LA county can reopen cautiously by July fourth I think we always want to be optimistic but I I also agree we have to be guided by the science and we're learning new things almost every day so I think it's going to be important to have a road map of what exactly that means whether it's all for example I assume that we're not gonna talk about having large assemblies even after even after July fourth we're as one would hope for retail establishments that that would be a possibility for most of them so dining in in restaurants shopping inside stores inside malls that's okay you think well I I think again I think when wants to make sure that their social distancing the people who are in masks and in the hand sanitizing all as important as well so it's not just a question of the facility it's a question of how people are interacting with their in within that I would think that restaurant is going to be very tough because you you well as I talk to restauranteurs they have to reduce their into and tiles tables the seating by between fifty and seventy five percent that may or may not make it possible for them to continue to to do business at that level so it's it's it's it's tricky with with small retail stores how do you make sure people are keeping him reasonable distance thing and the like so it does take is Ferrer said the whole raft of different individuals and different sectors coming together it's a question of routine testing I think is a is a is an open one and let's remember that they're two different kinds of testing one is the diagnostic testing the somebody have the disease now basically yours had the disease very very recently and then there's the antibody which means that which we're basically using to try and see if somebody's ever had this disease in the last since it's been available since it's been prevalent in the last three or four months as different it gives you different information I do think of the offering the diagnostic testing is reassuring to people that they will have a place to get tested but I'm not sure that that is going to be terribly helpful to have widespread diagnostic testing in low risk populations of Iran and nursing I certainly would want that but does the average person I'm not so sure well speaking of antibody testing I don't know if you saw that USC study that was published this week and think Gemma which estimates that four point six five percent of LA county residents have had coded so yes I mean that I've seen that result and it was with the department of public health food product most Simon and I think it's a we need more of that kind of random testing so to try and understand March of this disease and and abroad well what does that tell you the four point six five percent well it's user on way from for herd immunity we know we have a lot of an apparent infections and this gives you a sense of how much that is compared to the other number that I have and you know it does definitely section in the short period of time so for herd immunity sixty percent of the population either has to have had it has the antibodies or has had a vaccine yeah the sixty percent immunity actually we're not we're not going to get there we're not going to get there just with the the natural course of this disease we're going to need the vaccine for things to really be moving in a positive way to back towards what we consider normal right okay so meanwhile as we're talking about opening what about schools that's a huge question and the heads of various school districts on a letter I believe to the governor saying what with these budget cuts we're not sure we can reopen in a timely manner because the how do we prepare for this how we have to totally restructure and we're not going to necessarily have the funds to do so what do you think should happen so that schools can reopen in the fall well it's a good question isn't just whether schools can reopen the question is or should reopen the question is how they re open not just financially but in terms of the concerns we have about transmission and I think that's that's a significant problem that's why for a lot of universities anyway they're talking about probably having online you know classes as as opposed to in person classes and that that is an option you see that the school systems of bought a lot of computers for the students that can't afford or don't have it and they're adapting to that but it's you know it's certainly not the preferred way to long term on the other hand you don't want to lose you know wanna lose years for education of our children to code if you can avoid it right okay so what do you think from a messaging standpoint because we're talking about re opening and a lot of things need to happen you're mentioning that retail stores need to make sure that people stay a part in there where masks and all that do you think that public education has been adequate in LA county to people know what they need to be doing to try to halt the spread of this disease as they ventured out into public well I think there's been a very good messaging and is consistent that we need to do physical not social distancing we need to make sure that people are wearing masks in that they're using the the best kind of hygiene so I think people know that whether they're going to use it when they especially as we get towards a time when it's nice to be outdoors and then like to do things and then that maybe they're good outdoors they're going indoors and out back you know it's it's going to be more difficult because people even if they know what they're supposed to be doing they may say well you know for me it's not a risk young and the complication rates very low so I'll take a chance or maybe you know I'm outside so I don't worry about it very much and and outside is generally better in inside but it is not a panacea to try and prevent the disease all right well thank you so much for joining us today you're welcome my pleasure that's Jonathan fielding former director of the LA county department of public health now at.

I mention the dam bond you know so my Sunday show Mister this. the stuff of life liberty and live in ten PM eastern this coming Sunday I know it's only. Tuesday. but the way to prepare the program today because I'm this week and I'm I'm traveling. I birthday's coming up the twenty first you believe that rich. gonna be sixty two. don't look a day over sixty one by the way. but Dan's one of my buddies you know he's he's a regular substitute host. I just got very famous now she doesn't substitute as much but I couldn't be happier he is terrific. and he's got a wonderful new book coming out called exonerated and it's also trip it's got a lot of great information there but we have a wonderful time. and he does a great job. you can see over his Twitter side will be talking about it later in the week to. it's a great show where I give people time to speak it's very popular everywhere I go people ask me about it. and they appreciate it because I think they appreciate. some rational logical discussion and that's what we do in the program. I've been totally unsuccessful in getting Elizabeth Warren AOC Omar to leave. Bernie Sanders the rest of them on the program they just won't show up. they will do. that's fine that's up to them. can't coercive. we've also tried to get on the radio program those folks in more Jerry Nadler won't come on my program now if I were a domestic terrorist Mister but is I think a come on my program if I were doing a podcast you know off off shore on a boat. maybe yeah. maybe in a Cuban harbor maybe then you come on the program. the best part of this hearing is yet to come that would be Corey Lewandowski who I want to salute but let's let's can this continue Jerry Nadler ladies and gentleman cut to go the way this is not one because of the American people to hear the story in full late yesterday the White House said this a letter claiming that missile and that's his conversations with the president quote are protected from disclosure by executive branch confidentiality interests close quote they say he may testify about presidential communications that already disclosed in the mother reports but no more they make that claim despite the fact that missile and asking was at all times a private political operative let's let's let's stop. let me help Mr clown out here Mr Bozell. the privilege belongs to the president not Lewandowski and then you look at the circumstances. and what the White House counsel's office is saying when Mr Lewandowski was in the oval office talking to the press the United States his particular profession is irrelevant. the president of the United States has every right. to receive counsel and input. to discuss ideas and so forth in a confidential manner or he cannot function. notice Mister Nadler would never ever. allow the present the United States to question his staff. the question people who visit him. to apply the freedom of information act his documents or anything of the sort. but the privilege is that the present United States. has a right. be given advice counsel seek input so forth from people otherwise we're gonna have here again have an individual can't talk to anybody. and I Adler's out there acting like this is black and white on constitutional a cover up and that he speaks for the American people in the American people never get the full story American people never get what full story we just had a two year criminal investigation. the media have been all over this stuff what story is this clown talking about. he acts like he's some kind of. objective judge jury judicata of some kind what he's already pronounced repeatedly that the present United States is committed crimes. and this whole thing is a farce. president is not required to play along. it's not required to to undermine the office of the presidency and separation of powers to accommodate this radical pro terrorist not jobs agenda. and I wonder when in this nation an election between Matt learn trunk Nadler continue stay speaks for the American people how so based on what..

Where are you going to have hundreds of thousands of people? We're going to celebrate America. Sounds good right, July four. Celebrate amount. This election is a verdict on whether we want to live in a country where the people who lose an election reviews to concede and spend the next two years, trying to shred our constitution and rip your country apart. You remember during one of the debates when crooked Hillary said, if I win. Are you going to support me? But I must be honest, I didn't give her a great answer. I was very that might have been my hardest question. During the debates. Isn't it amazing that it worked the other way around? Right. Isn't it? If you want to know how the system is rigged. Just compare how they came after us for three years with everything they have versus the free pass. They gave to Hillary and her aides after they set up an illegal server, destroyed evidence deleted as it washed thirty three thousand emails, expose classified information and turned the State Department enjoy pay for play cash machine. Thirty three thousand emails deleted. Think of that. I keep mentioning, you know, there was a lot of corruption on the other side. But, you know, the simplest thing they get a subpoena from the United States Congress and they decide that they're not gonna give it. So Lindsey Graham, they delete and they acid wash which is very expensive. Nobody does it. They acid wash. Does he mess? Never be seen again. But we may find them somewhere deep in the State Department. But can you imagine if I got Cepeda? Thank you, this. If I got a subpoena for emails, if I deleted one Email, like a love note to Malania.
