Why It Matters

Hey, Remember the Olympics?

"I'll be the first to admit that I am not a huge sports fan. I don't follow the NBA and I tend to wander away from the TV during Football Games, but I do love to watch the Olympics, and that's because it's actually super cool to see whole nations rallying behind one team. It becomes something more than a game. It becomes this uniting cultural moment. It's like a global holiday, and so with a little bit of extra couch time on my hands I was very ready to tune into this summer's Tokyo Olympics the perfect distraction. But the July twenty twenty Olympic. Games aren't going to be held this month. They've been postponed by a full year. This decision wasn't made lightly. And in fact, Japan is working around the clock to try to figure out how to keep their games. Despite a global pandemic, it's part of a long story for decades. Just like their athletes. Countries have competed fiercely to host the Games despite mounting evidence that they usually represent a significant financial loss, and that made us ask why, if not money, what's the games offer that so special and worth so much effort I'm Gabrielle Sierra and this is why it matters today, the Olympics soft power and the deep running politics of the World Games. For many sports, the Olympics is the apex of what they can achieve as athletes, and it's a chance for the world to see incredible incredible athletes out there on the world stage. My name is Julius boy, cough and I. Teach Political Science at Pacific University, Oregon. Professor boy cough has written four books about the Olympics and as it turns out. He's also a former member of the US men's Olympic soccer team. and. That is really why the Olympics have stuck around and Ben so successful. Were it not for the athletes? We wouldn't really have the Olympic Games of course the money shuffle has become a big part of that. We can talk about that later, but for athletes in lesser known sports, sake curling in the Winter Olympics or maybe equestrian or something like that in the Summer Olympics, this is their one chance to make big. Now I think we have to remember that. The Olympics the Olympic Games themselves are a value or ideal driven event. I'm Katherine Moon and I am a professor of political. Science at Wellesley College I study issues related to eastasia particularly the Koreas and I love to talk about culture and values in international politics. As much as we say, it is about pure athleticism and fairer competition. It really was an is about ideals, human, being the human spirit to strive for excellence, and to do once best, and to be proud to be wist others who are excellent in their fields. And I think that's what drives people to go to the Olympics and to watch the Olympics. It's changed my life completely. Cultures and values together. Research big. So. It's July and we were supposed to start watching the summer Olympics in about a week, so what the heck happened! Yeah. The Olympics got corona virus and. They had to push back for a year. When you look back at that moment, there were calls to cancel the Olympics. There were calls to postpone the Olympics and the members of the International Olympic Committee seemed determined to press ahead with the games this at a time when other sports were shutting down, world soccer was shutting down various sports leagues around the world, and yet the International Olympic Committee felt like they needed to press ahead and the real reason why the. International Olympic Committee finally acted was because Canada basically said they were going to do a de facto boycott. If the Games were held in twenty twenty, they were soon followed by. The National Olympic Committees from Australia Portugal Germany, and when that all happened the International Olympic Committee had no choice but to postpone, and that's exactly what they did so now. They're slated for July twenty twenty one. To move has finally been confirmed. The signs are all over Tokyo symbols of what was supposed to be the Japanese revival. A comeback crushed at least for now. We're talking about it. Doesn't it seven years in the making millions of dollars. Two hundred countries at eleven thousand athletes. You can't just pick another date on the calendar. The Olympic Games have only been canceled three times. The first time was in nineteen sixteen during World War One. The second and third time we're in one, thousand, nine, hundred, forty and nineteen, forty, four, due to World War Two. It's still unclear whether the twenty twenty games will become forth historic cancellation. The current plan is to begin them on July Twenty Fourth Two thousand twenty one. But. Many experts are skeptical of this time line, arguing that there is no guarantee that the corona virus will be fully under control in a year. Still the struggle to preserve the twenty twenty games shows just how invested host countries become an success. What's at stake for Japan as the situation plays out. Well Japan has plunged a lot of money and prestige and human capital into making the Games happen if we think back to when they were originally bidding on the Olympics, they said that the entire escapade would cost seven point three billion dollars, but by the time this summer rolled around, they had spent some twenty eight billion dollars, according to an audit by the Japanese government, and so that's four times what they had originally planned postponing means adding anywhere from two to six billion dollars. Those are the best guesses that we have now. So what's at stake for Japan is they've already spent way more money than they expected and now they might not even get the Olympics to actually happen. By Minister Avi Government had hoped to use tourism around the Olympics has a way to bring in the capital and the entrepreneurial energy that eastern seeking for his country. The primary reason why Japan has wanted to host the Olympics is to jump-start or jump start again. It's downtrodden economy and I think this has obviously failed have been the pandemic, but also in some ways my belief is that it was a misplaced hope Japan's desire to get back on its feet economically as a major productive global power based specifically on high-tech a. Intelligence as well as energy, efficient vehicles that these are things that can be accomplished through the Olympics. Do you think that Ave sees the Olympics as important to his legacy? I think every political leader would regard the Olympics or in countries that highly value international football hosting a FICA World Cup. These are major events, and we know that that's the case in more recent years with Brazil, trying to do the Olympics and. World Cup. It puts a country on the map or it draws attention to that country that already may have been on the map, so every leader is interested, but whether or not I leader gets kind of positive affect and impact that they would like is really questionable. The stakes for this type of positive branding are even higher right now. Some see the next games as an opportunity to be the site of the world's comeback from the pandemic and economic recession. It's a symbol that Japan would love to claim itself and that China the next host would be happy to receive if the Summer Games and up canceled. Whether or not a country gains economically. I think they liked the idea that they might be able to gain especially through tourist dollars and more importantly to name recognition, and as a way to show off their country. It's almost like you know you size each other up through the athletics as well as through the economic and political competition power games, and so there's a certain kind of a surrogacy. I think that goes on, but for the most part they want money they want. Tourists and tourists are important because of the ability to spread the good news about the country back in two thousand eight in preparation for the Beijing Olympics both the Chinese government and the Chinese society. Were really mobilizing average citizens to learn how to smile. These people were trained how to smile especially for Western tourists who would be coming for the Olympic Games and. The hundred thousand or so volunteers for the Olympic Games themselves, they were giving formal smiling training sessions so my. Yeah so, you know this was all a matter of looking appealing sure as a host society looking welcoming, because then tourists will go back and say well those Chinese people. They were so friendly. There is all the time. And the it's a little ludicrous that one would spend one's energy outweigh the other hand. That's how important this image making enterprise called. The Olympics can be too certain societies. The world loves the Olympics. Any attention of billions of viewers seems to promise an opportunity for host countries to redefine themselves on the world stage, and when you look at it that way, those hundred thousand professionally trained smiles start to seem a little less absurd, but the Olympics were always what they are now. How did we get here? When did the world's cities start spending? Billions of dollars to host ski jumpers pull vaulters every few years. On the sixth of April Eighteen, ninety, six, the first modern Olympic Games opened in Athens to build Olympic Stadium in Berlin capacity has arrived preside at the opening ceremony. Eleventh Modern Olympia Mexico of sixty. Eight, two African American athletes stood on the witness podium heads bowed. Longtime was raised in a blockhouse house. into the Nineteen Eighty Winter Olympics remembered today for the miracle on ice, one of the greatest moments in American sports. Every Olympics provides a snapshot of a city and a country. At a point. In time, this one was more compelling than most since China's rise, and it's ongoing. Transformation is the global story, not only at the moment, but likely of the foreseeable future. So the Modern Olympics were the brain child of a plucky Barron from France named. Baram peered Cooper Thanh and he was an Aristocrat who was very much dismayed by the fact that the French had just gotten drubbed in a war, and he thought that he could use sports to toughen up what he called at the time of Flabby Youth, who just gotten too soft, sounds a little bit curmudgeonly in kind of odd, but I say all that to say that the Olympics were sort of built on a bed of contradiction on one hand, the barren peer to coupon want to start the Olympics to toughen up the. The youth to get him ready for war, but he also used the games as this big mechanism for peace, he thought that the women of the time should not participate in the Olympics in fact, if you look at his writings, he said things like women's should only be involved in the Olympics to place the victory laurels on the heads of men who won the gold medals and silver medals. You also had a lot of the racist sentiments of his time, so he was a man of great sexism and racism. He was also a man of great persuasion, and he persuaded a lot of people to come along. So, he's got a great name, but you know mixed bag there on the goals and the original intent of the Olympic Games. Well, it's interesting to Gabby because when he started the Olympics, he got together a bunch of other dukes and counts and barons to create the International. Olympic Committee so there was a real aristocratic flavor from the very beginning of the Olympic Games. The growth of the Olympic Games into the global extravaganza. We now know was slow and steady only eleven nations officially participated in the eighteen ninety six games, but by nineteen, thirty six at the infamous Berlin Olympics that number had grown to forty nine. These games were also the first to be televised and watched by a global audience with this audience came advertisers, a process that culminated in the one, thousand, nine hundred eighty four games. Games sponsored in part by McDonald's these became the most financially successful in modern history by the Atlanta Games of nineteen, ninety-six. Nearly every nation on earth was represented, but it wasn't until the London Games of twenty twelve that all participating nations sent female athletes took more than a century, but we got there eventually. Cheers Barron, what trends have you noticed over the decades about what kind of countries are bidding or hosting the Olympics? Sure will for starters, a lot of the bidding was incredibly competitive, especially in the nineteen nineties say and moving forward, but in recent years there's been the rise of a lot of criticism from critical journalists from academic writing from activists in different cities, human rights workers that has put a lot of people's heads to maybe have a little more caution in how they approached the Olympics. In terms of the wider trends of why we're not seeing or bids, those trends have also become more clear through time, and those trends are overspending. I call it a sketch economics where during the bid phase of the Olympics. The bidder say that the Olympics will only cost so much, but by the time the Olympics actually staged. It's actually many times at the Tokyo. Games are a perfect example of that. A second trend is white elephants stadiums because the Olympics has a lot of specialty sports like canoeing in these Whitewater rapid type scenarios. You have to build these special venues that. That really aren't going to be used afterwards and they often sit in disrepair, so there are memory pictures from say Athens where like the softball field is just a bunch of weeds, or you look at more recently Rio de Janeiro. Where in the DEO doral complex where they built this specialized canoe run. It's all boarded up. Nobody can really use it anymore. A third trend is displacement and gentrification. One point five million people were. To make way for the Beijing two thousand eight summer, Olympics I lived in Rio de Janeiro in the lead up to the two thousand Sixteen Olympics as a fulbright research, fellow and I saw for my own. Is Displacement happening there? Some seventy seven thousand people were displaced to make way for the Olympics. Another trend with the Olympics is the militarization of the public sphere. You're seeing more. More and more people around the world viewing the Olympics as terrorist target, this was directly stated by Chechen rebel Doku Umarov in regards to the two thousand fourteen Sochi Olympics. He said that's a legitimate terrorist target, and of course we know from the political history of the Olympics that there was a terrorist attack at Munich in nineteen, seventy, two, and another one in Atlanta nineteen ninety. Ninety six in so cities essentially used the Olympics like their own private ATM machine when it comes to securitising the Games, getting all the Special Weapons and laws that they would never be able to get during normal political times, and those special weapons in laws stick around after the gains a fifth trend that we see time and again is what a lot of people are calling. Calling greenwashing which is to say making big environmental promises during the bid phase, and then not following through and actually comes to the delivery of the Olympics, and so it's those trends that more and more people are becoming aware of when they think about the Olympics is kind of scaring off cities from wanting to bid, because the word is out on the street that while the. Our full of the world's most wonderful and talented athletes, they come with a whole lot of social and political baggage as well. Rusting stadiums unfulfilled promises, terrorist threats and deep financial losses. The list of reasons not to host the Olympics is a long one and yet. We still see countries like South Korea Japan. China France and the United States spending millions of to win bids to host the Games Y. I think there is always the perennial hope that this time it'll be different for my country that this time my country will be able to launch itself into the global economy in a stronger light or be recognized as a global power. If we look at Brazil in two thousand sixteen that was the expectation, but also the reality is that even if you don't make a whole lot of money or even break even in preparing for the Olympics, it does put people in your country to work to build stadiums and to renovate facilities. It also raises the innovation and the upgrading hills of people especially if you are a developing or emerging economy. I think that when you add the yeezy access of different marketing tools advertising as well as numerous companies in the sporting world. Who are there to participate and to sell their products? Many countries can easily see these opportunities as potential pass toward further global integration and possibly growth. It seems like some of what we've been talking about has to do with soft power so I was wondering. If you can maybe explain a bit, you know what is soft power. Soft, power is in contrast to the notion of hard power, which of course is military power as well as economic power that can be clearly measure trade volume for example, and so when we think about soft power. We tend to look at different factors or different tools of power, such as cultural influence, ideology and institutional appeal. It all relies on the power to attract. It's more than just influence. It's really a way to have a nation like exerting soft power helped shape. The rest of the world. To its advantage. Will we talk about South Power? We have to include the biggest example of soft power being American soft, power. And by that I mean three aspects, liberal democratic politics, free market, economy and fundamental values and rights, including rights freedom of speech, etc.. And many societies around the world, since the nineteen nineties has tried to adapt to these notions of soft power and the Chinese for sure when they held their two thousand eight Beijing. Their slogan was harmony. And it's an interesting. slogan given that the Olympics are really about petition right, but the as a harmony was intended to signal to the rest of the world to the outside world that they need not fear, China's rides that China's rise will be peaceful and harmonious will bring people together, and that it doesn't have to be riddled with contestation and potential violence the way that some in the national security style spin in the United States had feared or still fear China's rise to be. So in the context of the Olympics, there also seems to be a crossover between soft power, and you know maybe what everyday people would think of as just branding. Branding, of course, countries try to do all the time, but Tom soft power has to have some greater purpose than just selling goods. Let you South Korea's an example. The two thousand Eighteen Winter Olympics the South Korean government's preparations for another ballistic missile test by North Korea. So why are the Olympic so important as a potential diplomatic opening? If history is any guide when it comes to the careers, sport is one of the few ways to break the. President Will Jane of South Korea at the time. Really wanted to use the Olympics. For two purposes one was to entice. North Koreans North Korean regime to open up to come and witness possibilities of a good life, a good society, a life of Plenty in south, Korea and then a second related point or goal being. A message to North Korea that you too can have this. This is not just hours. You can share issue. Transform your political economic orientation. And, so the goal was not to sell a South Korean product or promote a South Korean industry per se, which would really about branding. But really to transform a reality of military tension and mistrust into one possible reconciliation, cooperation, and hopefully piece in the longer run. Announced that's grander scheme, but the problem there is. That North Korea doesn't really have a weakness at least not yet for the soft power appeal of other countries they've been able to withstand and basically say no. Thank you to many of the enticing aspects of the Chinese economic boom, and the land of plenty compared to North Korea. They know what's going on the south. They say no, thank you. They know what's going on in Japan in terms of wealth and influence. They say no. Thank you, so I think the part of international relations scholarship in policy-making around Soft Power Mrs Point. That in order for soft power to be effective, you need to have willing followers. You need to have willy meaning not coerced. You need to have a certain spirit of volunteerism toward transformation adaptation north. Korea is not a good candidate for that. I think a lot of people. Develop quite a bit of hope that something positive nothing specific, but something positive could happen. But in retrospect, it looks like South Korea worked really hard. Without getting that much turn, so President Moon jae-in is getting a lot of criticism in his own country for looking like a full for having been allegedly naive and I think that's a very harsh criticism. Because his intentions were very good, and actually there were signs that the Chick Korea's might be able to move toward some sort of cooperation or at least reduced hostilities. In retrospect you know, we can just easily say it didn't matter, but who knows perhaps in five ten years time, we may look at John Chang Olympics. As the seed that was planted in the middle of winter that grew into something more fruitful. Interpretations of the soft powers and branding potential of the Olympics will vary, but one thing is beyond doubt. Alongside the symbols of unity and pure athletic achievement, the Olympics are political. Looking back through history what you see as some of the most interesting Olympic Games from a geopolitical perspective. Oh, wow, there's just so many right from the beginning that had geopolitical implications. I think the ones that are probably most known to the general public would certainly be the nineteen thirty six Olympics in Berlin, if we think about those Olympics at the time Hitler was just marshalling power, and he was no fan of the Olympics it turned out, but his propaganda Minister Gurgles, put the pressure on him, and said Oh. You got to listen to this. This Hitler this is incredible opportunity to spread the gospel of Nazism to the entire world. Hitler listened and decided okay, we'll. We'll make this thing happen. And those games were used as a way of making it seem as if what was happening in Germany was normal when it was anything, but and in the end the United States went and in some ways it turned out to be a positive thing for the athletes like Jesse Owens who showed? Showed that Hitler's theory of white supremacy was just hocus pocus. Hitler had a stand there while athlete after athlete. Black Athlete after Black Athlete from the United States was successfully hauling in the metal, so that one is certainly one of them, but I think you could kind of go through time and look at just about every Olympics in talk about their geopolitical implications, some of the ones more recently that have generated a lot of discussion would certainly. Certainly be the nineteen seventy six Olympics in Montreal as well as the Nineteen eighty-four Olympics in Los. Angeles and you could argue nineteen eighty Moscow as well. This was at the height of the Cold War, when the Olympics were essentially being used as a proxy for a battlefield where the athletes from the United States and the Soviet Union were going head to head. In the Olympics of course, there was a lot more at stake than just medals. Pride was a standing in the international world system in, so you can look at pretty much every Olympics through the history of the Games and think about them through a political lens. One way to see how geopolitically charged to the Olympics have been is to take a look at its long history of boycotts while the United States did participate in Hitler's games. Many Jewish athletes from around the world refused to later in nineteen, seventy, six of twenty eight nations, including most of the sovereign countries in Africa, boycotted the Montreal Games to protest apartheid in South Africa in one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty at the height of the Cold War the United States led sixty six nations into a boycott of the Summer Games in Moscow the Soviet. Union did something similar with their own allies for years later. The list goes on. While I mean going off of all of this. You know the IOC claims that. The Olympics are nonpolitical, but it seems like they've always been at least partly political. So how realistic is that stated goal? The Olympics grown under the weight of an unrecognized political history. Deep contradictions are nestled at the core of the entire Olympic project, when anybody who takes a second to look at the Games knows that they're eminently political from top to bottom. When it comes to politics, the International Olympic Committee is living in the past, whereas politically minded Olympic athletes are rooted in the present, and they're thinking about the future, and so to deny their ability to speak out on the most important issues of our time is to squelch their individuality and to squelch their political dissent. So to step back and we think at this iconic moment of Olympic. From the nineteen sixty eight Olympics where John Carlos, and Tommie Smith stood on the medal, stand in Mexico, city and thrust their black love fists into the sky during the national anthem while the Australian. Sprinter Peter Norman, still by a silver medallist with an Olympic project for human rights button on standing in solidarity with the athletes that's become an iconic moment of Olympic history and is also even. Even bigger than that. It's an iconic moment of world history, and when that happened the International. Olympic Committee realized that they needed to fortify the rules within their Olympic Charter to quell that kind of activity after nineteen sixty eight, when they really get it down and clear writing, and they create a rule that's embedded in the Olympic Charter that prohibits political activism inside or around Olympic venues if If you fast forward to today you have numerous athletes that are speaking out on issues, so you take Gwen bury the US hammer thrower who put a fist in the air reminiscent of Smith and Carlos when she was on the medal, stand at the two thousand Nineteen Panamerican. Games same for race, Imboden, the US fencer who took a knee at those same two thousand nineteen Pan Am. AM Games in Chile. And after that happened the International Olympic Committee essentially doubled down and earlier this year in January issued special rules that were meant to fortify and be more specific to the rule that's in the Olympic Charter, forbidding descent and the new guidelines that were issued in January by the International Olympic Committee made it clear that hand gestures or kneeling on the podium was forbidden. These new rules can seem a bit ironic. Especially, considering the fact that in two thousand nineteen, the US Hall of fame, inducted, Smith and Carlos in recognition of their iconic protest the fact that the Sticking with its ban has prompted many critics to say they are out of step with the times and particularly with other large sporting organizations that have changed their rules to allow for dissent. There is always a political context, if not a political goal or reasoning around participation or lack of participation in the Olympics. And I think what's ironic is the two thousand eighteen come tongue gangs was about the most blatantly political on a diplomatic level at least very blatantly political Olympic event because of the north-south. Temporary raprochement at the Games so. It's not really fair to say that he can't have protests, but you can have diplomacy or diplomatic efforts as far as people's desire to protest at Olympic venues I think that right now we are in a world where protests has become almost a norm in societies that are still allowed to protest. Now I think we have to remember that the Olympics. The Olympic Games themselves are a value or ideal driven. Event and I looked at the Olympics bit light. The recent US SPACEX launch I was really surprised to see so many people on the NASA website from around the world. Congratulating the astronauts congratulating the space program, and saying that we are wish you at a time when the United States is so unpopular and is really an embarrassing situation on the global stage, so the Olympics is a bit like that that it says something to people that Oh my goodness. We can do this. Wow, I would like to do this. And I think it's a wonderful thing to see human excellence, and for the athletes, of course that is what they are striving for. So when Professor Moon mentioned spacex this. Into my head. It happened more than a year ago on this podcast when I spoke with former NASA administrator. Charles Bolden, and he said something on never forget. He told me about the AW. He experienced the first time he saw the earth from space, a world without borders a world in his words as it should be rather than the way it is. The Olympics for all their problems give US perspective. Every two years we get to see the nations of the world in competition without violence like the view from the International Space Station. This insight doesn't fix any particular global problem. Still it's hard to measure the importance of the view itself and what the world might look like without it. You. Berman has scored apparently an interview with President Donald Trump on the twenty-first of June at the White House. They have been accorded to channel nineteen Don Berman, the news director, but accorded 21-minutes not twenty one. What does it say about twenty to thirty minutes? They'll give twenty to thirty minutes. One on one with President Trump, and this is the result of dawn, you know, Margaret, you gotta give the guy credit. Wait, wait, wait, Phil. If you're talking about are you saying that he just lives stick the stick to the stick to it? Did did this of it? Oh, someone lay her down. What does that mean? What do you mean? He he was sticking to it. Yes. But I don't like that term sticking to it. It's still. Get it sounds like what it sounds like whatever's in your mind right now you're saying, I have a filthy. Well, you're in the middle of a freaking convention. I don't know what I can tell you condition. Yeah. It's a free condition to that. You have looked. Hi, folks. Welcome getting into the show Phil, we can deal with this later. We're going to have to deal with it now because I got done Berman coming on here to tell us about the interview he's got coming up with the President Trump, I got Margaret flipping her lid because she didn't get it at. No, I'm not flipping my live. But in the middle of you guys, going f-, Ted Dunn's IC. And I'm listening to some caterwauling sub man who is like every other man, these days, he's at man camp with a drum going. Know what? You don't get it. What's the get Jesus some of the stuff that pours out of here face? Yeah, nothing. Ted done whatever that song is. I don't know it's going to be done Berman. It's going to be a discussion of his, I think pretty amazing amazing scope. Can't tonight. I mean you see these stick to -ness of it was that the word you were. Yes. All right. Well, unique hit full of guy. Yeah, I mean I don't know how he did it. But, but, but do you like to do? I'm sorry. No, no, no. Sorry is not going to do it anymore. You're not going to fire him. Now, are you may maybe what I told you guys when I told you guys not to do that anymore and you still doing it? And it's pissing me off. All right, Phil now. Wait, wait. Wait, it's pissing me off this whole. Hey, Mr. Henry, you said, Buber instead of booger or whatever. To say that I'm using that as an example. Today, today, it's going to be today, how you respond how you perform today? Bud will tell the story tell the tale as to whether or not you have a job. Skin five, you know, Phil it's not really fair. The kid why isn't it fair because we've all kind of been doing it. It is true filled. Yeah. The bun guy's gonna get fired on a kind of physically handicapped, Mr. hearings prejudice. Yeah. That's it, man. I'm prejudiced. You're physically handicapped that. I'm prejudiced I gave you a job man. I've got you on the air. As a matter of fact. Yeah, you're say, I got an ear even though you sound like you're targeted to tarted retarded, I happen to know that you're not. That's why I'm. What the hell is with this conversation? So what do we done? Berman will be here in just a moment to talk about his big big big time scoop, baby. What do you mean baby? I mean I is he the guy he well right now he's saying he is the only local television, the only local TV station to get a one on one Donald Trump of then, I guess he is he scooped everybody in L A. I shouldn't say scoop nationally. I don't have any other local TV stations have done it. So that's coming up with Don Berman, also Vernon dosier is going to join us, and he's going to talk about the marathon coming up next week, and it'll be a forty eight hour Vernon does your marathon. Oh my God. Yeah. There's gonna be a lot of people loved us Verdon rage about things. So it'll be a forty eight hour Vernon DOJ Vernon. Dosier don't say it. Man. Fill you're not bowling are, you know, making it. Yeah I'm the only guy around here that starts to cry who is making it up. All right. Let's first of all, let's get done bourbon on the phone because this is a big moment for dawn Rivera Prada hip done Berman, a channel nineteen news right now in the newsroom daunting, but what a forty eight hour when did you first get the word word for word by father used to say the word Thunderbird? What's the price forty twice? And it's interesting that within the very thing that killed by father was wine. He was an alcoholic got. I'm sorry to hear that. All right. I didn't never said that to Don. I talked about. But when fuel said, you know, when I said, what's the price, you know, once the time it, it reminded me of my father had come home to everybody sitting on the sofa, and their next to 'em bottle of Thunderbird wine. And I'd say I look at it say what the price they'd say forty place, he'd go. What's the word? I'd say Thunderbird and he'd say you got that right. And then he'd pass out and so. On the happier times. Yes. Hard to happier times. Well, it seems that should Berman's eldest, son done. In fact, shred bourbons, oldest son, if that's what he's been able to stand. The oldest gets the same thing, bright, you were his only son yesterday wasn't only son. But in technically I was his oldest fun. But I, I was his eldest, son. And his only son, I had three sisters. One of them got married to the guy whose name, I don't want to mention the that was a whole. Yeah. I don't want to get into that. Yeah. We'll, we'll was a weird thing done sister. My sister Teresa, I've told the story so, but if bears repeating because you've got a lot of I guess, you could say you've had a lot of ups and downs in your family, not down. But I'm trying my sister Theresa married built door co founded dork mufflers in downtown LA over noon. Remember, the name is Theresa Berman, dork, and she's battled on my nephew. Got Don Berman back with this, you know, Don, I'm sorry that I hung up on you. I apologize for being online. I so let's just pick up. Let's pick up where we left off. We want to talk to you about your interview now with a Donald Trump. Well, that's why I came on. Still going to be the case. I'm very proud of it as well. You should be. We were just talking about your family. You know. All right. Okay. Look, I, I was in LA magazine. See this is the point I wanna hear about. But you do. Wait a minute. You brought it up. I was in LA magazine, because I said, I wouldn't mind taking my, my nephew's wife. Oh, god. Telling you didn't. Yes, I did. I had a I don't think I'm talking out of school. Everyone in LA knows I had a severe drinking until problem. No, I didn't either this might have been under the radar. Is it really because it's compete, it's all over the internet. No, it's not another radar. Believe me. Just because you guys aren't all that clued in doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I'm not proud of it. But I'm getting my car is on the table. Well, let's, let's put it this way. You've come through a lot, well you're gonna come from. But there's an awful lot that I want to make up to my family. The family named Berman name is I was mentioned too. So I've got this girl. I've got my, my sister Teresa, whose name Teresa, dork Berman, dork or whatever the hell her name, and then we got the slum families worked in. Well, at least the name slob is I was gonna say the middle name. Julia slob Berman. Oh, baby done. Berman is with us. Folks done has I don't know. You call it booked. Or we've, we, we booked an interview with the President Trump. Now, this is, as you mentioned on a unique one, because this is the no other local television station has scored a one on one with, with President Trump now I think people need to understand the difference the difference is is very simply this. We are in local affiliate went on a local affiliate with local station. We do affiliate with different news services, like what are the ones that you feel you with well? Are you do I have to answer that? I didn't say anything, but the channel nineteen doesn't like to. I don't really want to get into that. We, we draw our news from a number of different sources and we cut them when we use it. What are some of the sources, we credit them when we use it? I don't wanna get into it right now. Well, that says to be as if you're frayed you're gonna lose the affiliation. I'm and maybe maybe not. I mean we've come through channel. Nineteen is like Don Berman. We have we've been drug through every garbage pit do I gotta go through this? I like we use the garbage pit. You know, there was one other listeners viewers took exception, the way you guys. Thank god. Do you do that on purpose? It's the way I see the problem, all they think they do you think we're mocking you? I don't like the way you people say, God, it's like you're back east. I don't know. I'm not doing anything man. I mean maybe it's something to do purpose either. It's the way I like to say it because I like to emphasize when I think, someone is garbage. I didn't say if you wanna say Don Berman garbage, but I said, I'm going to bet you nobody's saying that we're moving on now onto another point. So, yes. Channel nineteen Don Burma to both come through some very tough times. Now comes the phone call the other night now. Yes, I got the phone call from from Kevin toy. Who's our? What's his name? I'm just taking some notes here. I want to I want to put this in my column. Okay. Yeah. E. R T, O, Kevin assistant, who's director channel nineteen. All right. And Kevin, you're sitting down. I said, I'm laying down. You won't. You're woke me up. And we had a laugh over that. And he said, well, it's not the first time I said, no, you're right. It's not the first time and we had, you know, we had a very healthy laugh over that, and reminisced for when did you tell you the nose all. Yeah. Yeah, throw he I, I lay there. He said did. I wake you up. I said, I was laying there and I said, yes, you did wake me up but I'm just laying here. Okay. And we've got that part of it. And I said, what's up? He said, Don, the White House responded to our repeated requests for an interview with President Trump. They said he will be available to you channel nineteen Don Berman, but you have him on, on the president's of planner for the twenty first. He'll talk in the afternoon at the White House. Yeah. And I'm telling you, I, I about a half a beat, and I think I screamed I jumped out of bed, I just missed so hat, Kevin was was beside himself happy. And then about a boy, say twenty minutes later here comes hill run Martin as saying. I didn't think you had it India. I read that in your tweet the other day. I said, well, thank you. Thanks chief. And so often the racist. Are you? Are you prepared? Oh, I'm very prepared. I I was joining gun questions. I've been working on this since before I got the word from Kevin. Yeah. It's and of course, the first thing that people assume about done Berman, because I've come through what I've come through is that I I'm gonna I'm gonna somehow cower and be Meakin scared and. Why is that everyone thinks I'm just gonna play this one as a softball. You know, just everything is, oh, gee, Mr President. Thank no, no, no, no, no. Don Berman doesn't get star struck. We're talking about, Don Berman's channel nine I do. The Berman beat. I do done. Berman lives in his car. That was a series, we still do that, by the way, Phil, and I get a lot of people coming up to me and to me, dollar bills and going as a joke. And, and I, I not, but they don't get they don't get what real journalism. But was now what was this done? That was my before he had the Berman beat. We had the special done Berman report was called John Berman lives in his car. Okay. Okay. What's the problem? Well, we're waiting for you to toast. But that beans, what does it mean? I'm talking to some people over here. Don. I'm sorry, what it means is. Can you imagine what kind of stoops what kind of news? What kind of information a man who is a reporter gets when he lives in his car living in my car? Yeah. Okay. I it didn't hit me. I'm not sure doesn't let a reporter so you'll have to be a reporter. You don't have to be a reporter. Why did you change the name to the Berman be because no one else got it either? So I'm not singling you guys out. But I it's, it's a it's a continuing source of your attention for me because I did I lived in my car during the period of time we had done Berman lives in his car, for instance, I would say, yeah. Did you say like tonight on Burma lives in his car? Yes. I say tonight on done Berman lives in his car, and I'd give it one to pre 'cause I'm staring into became bre. I'm looking into the camera. And I'm saying tonight on done Berman lives in his car. You know, I'm shifting my is back and forth to see if there's any sign of life in the audience and naturally the wasn't, and then I go tried on done Berman lives in his car. A man who eats garbage out of metal each garbage instead of stuff, and what were some of the big reports you did on that guy was eating out of garbage dumping homeless thing. I do a whole thing on people that are mentally disturbed. I can't remember. I try to put it out of my mind to be honest with you. But this would you do like today on Burma lives in his car interviews. President trump. Don Berman lives in his car. He interviews what he can reviews Krizan Trump. No, no. I I understand your question, but no that wouldn't play. Well, why not because you're not going to get an interview with Don Berman lives in his car had more to do with the streetlife streetlife? You know what I mean by streetlife streetlife is like, homeless people. No, no, no, no, no. No street. Life is where it's at streetlight. Hey, you know, you know train. No. What are we talking about? Robert you much. No. Why would I know well the graphic an American what is streetlife streetlife is where it's happening home. Jose. Drug dealers Zenit. No. But what a racist thing, Don. No wonder it's not on the Ernie more. And you say, always no longer on the Ernie more, I said, boy, no wonder it's not on the air anymore. Oh, I thought. So why was it taking off the because they thought it was too racist? No well, I tried to make an about urban life, essentially what you did this you slept in your car in south central. Is that what you did, or you slept in your car at any black neighborhood, and you turn it into a whole thing about all right, Phil? I'm not enough. I heard you got. About twenty feel. I love you. But you'd like a machine gun is something that I you know, Don Burma lives in his car was was report. It was a series. I was very proud of and just people like you fill, you know, and people like bud. And all of you, man. Did he just gave up on didn't you? Yeah. I did. I gave up on it. So nobody fired. You man. No, no one fired me. I gave up on you happy. Are you happy? I quit. No one is happy done when you have to quit on something. But to blame Villeurbane anyone I didn't blame Phil you were you. Well, you blame me for bringing it up. And the fact that identified what it was about a big report on black America. No. It was not. It was, it was basically a report on crime crime in the black community. She's, you know what you should never have said, streetlife. Hey. All right, Don Berman with us here on the world famous fill in be show. We have yet to really get to the essential, although I think it's probably useful to talk about your career, dawn to talk about what you have done what you represent looking at your video camera. Fill in the way you're shifting around in your seat. It looks like you're trying to never mind. Okay. All right. But I'm just trying to let people know you might want to roll back in at, at all this out, bud. Yeah. You do that bud. Okay. What I'm talking about Phil's, shifting around. In malls? Are you done? You do that on purpose just to see what kind of reaction. You're gonna get out of me. Well, you know what? I'm not going to sit still for getting up and leaving wait a minute or trying to. All right. Three two one go so done. Berman is with us here and through your cut off the stuff about him. His boss. See what I'm saying? Phil dawn. I'm hanging up against. Do I want to it again? I swear to God I won't do it again. You like talking to a five year old, you know, that aren't got an energy with the president of the United States, and you're yelling at me. Well, then quit acting like a five year old. Don Berman with us. He'll be interviewing President Trump. This is a big scoop for a local television station, the only local TV station in America to interview, President Trump, one on one doing what, what, what do you think prompted the White House to, you know, to see I, I honestly believe it was the random thing. I think that's how the president works. I don't know I'm not saying they said any money MO, and I'm not saying they put us in our on a roulette, wheel or anything, but I do think that it was just a matter of sitting down and talking, I, I would give Kellyanne Conway a lot of credit. I think this bears her Mark of, we'll look, Mr President, you talked to this, that work in that, why don't we talk to a local television station, and why don't we have it be in a big market in the state that you're not very popular in California, and my reputation. I think is I've, I know there are a lot of guys the news business with stellar reputations. But I think mine was probably interestingly. Well, it's no secret that you have very vocally admired, Kellyanne Conway. And Jeannie Piero. All right. No, no. That's that's true. That is true. Then you did man. That is true. I mean. I'm not saying that it was a flattering thing. Go fill the Don Donald you're doing Berman. Don Berman, Donald Trump. Oh, wow. There's a woman over here. I we're talking to you right now. Sorry, Don Berman was very unflattering. And his commentary about Kellyanne Conway, and Jeannie Piero as if they were a couple of sluts that would do your bidding for a milkshake the way you put it. There was like you're in a convertible, and there. They are. And you got on a mink coat. Oh, yeah. Right. Do did man. Minnesota your host for the night. No, I did not well it sounded that way. Well, I can assure you and it went, so bad than why would she pick me? Well, that's what I'm saying. It's Kellyanne Conway. So there's no accounting for taste a lot. And by the way, I'll tell you. One more thing talking to me tonight on this radio on, on your podcast, brunette cat, whatever you call it Phil. I'm going off. I'm gonna talk to the president of the United States on grinding. You interview you put about that. Yes, I have. Yeah. And, and you. On me. Yes, I did. And you don't care. Do you know we don't know we don't done. That's the way we played around here. I don't hang up on you. All right. You can't if you want. But I'm giving you the opportunity here to talk to your audience, and I didn't go on FOX, you could go on FOX, and then you would probably be answering questions about your alcoholism, the various paternity suits. All right. Never mind. Yeah. So, so anyway, I, I don't know that it's the Kellyanne Conway, you think she was flattered by that. I said, yes, I'm I'm look I didn't mean to be crude and his loot as I was. I know I talked about the two of them tag, teaming. Let's knock that off. Man. You got to you got an interview with the president. Let's keep an above board. All right. But she was asking me. Why do I think I got the interview I think. Yeah, Kellyanne Conway, because she was flattered by your that you want to go there. Well, let me answer. Yeah. I do because I think you people misinterpreted I think Jeannie payroll got together and probably said he this guy Trump. I mean. That this guy Berman. He seems, you know, he's cute. And he was talking about us like, you know, shoot. Yeah. Oh boy. He was talking about us. All right. You really think you'd think she was flattered by that tag, teaming done Berman. Let me say this, and I'm going to say this as I'm gonna be as much of a gentleman, as I can, I'm going to be as much of a gentleman, as I can Kellyanne Conway. With a mug like mad. All right, Don. I haven't even been here can finish this never mind. Oh man gap. See some bed. I don't want to hear you say what you're gonna say. I was gonna say something good. What is your stood out with with a mug lake? Then I, I was going to go from bad. She should be really happy that you talked about our tag team in all this, because she's got a mug like that. That's what you were going to say. No, I was going to say that what were you gonna say? Oh well, now I'm not gonna tell you now. Yes, you are, what were you say I was gonna say with a mug like that. I'm sure she will look in the mirror and say, look at that kisser. And you know what it isn't so bad that John Berman? Oh, yeah. That's Bush much better. You know what you're right? You've probably should've come on this program. Damn right. I shouldn't have because I probably watched the interview now I, I'll tell you right about Kellyanne, if you're listening or if you're watching, you know how I feel about you, and Jeannie. And I did that whole snorkel you did it what I gotta get current show. Sanson sent me a joke about wearing a snorkel. What about it? But did you print it? No. Did you this is the first time? He brought it up. Then why you bring it up. You're right. Berman. You are so stupid. Consider you're considered a miracle. Like one of those Roman Catholic church miracles like the lady of our whatever the hell and she turns a, an apple into a cotton bale, you know. I'm talking miracle. You've got this interview I agree with that, Don Berman with us. Oh, you agree with that. Well, you know what if I still have the stare at this, this, this, this, whatever it is interview tomorrow? He'll be a damn miracle. All right. We're talking with John Berman from channel nine t news about his forthcoming interview with President Donald Trump on the twenty on the twenty-first of June, and I would suggest bud that all of this stuff have with Kellyanne Conway. I'll do it feel, but all the Kellyanne Conway stuff everything having to do with how Don got the interview. Yeah. This. Right. But in an oral just cut it all out, cut it all out. And just go back to we'll pick it up with this. What have you done, what have you planned in terms of questions? I know you said you indicated earlier that you don't quote nobody's punk and that you I think I'm a very hard hitting and everybody else. Real what so what are you gonna open with? I've got an open. I'm going to ask him some questions about Mr President. You know, there's been some criticism of you your communication style. A lot of people. Call you. I mean, I'm going to have to work on this. I don't wanna use the word liar, man. A lot of people say, well, a lot of people may say that, but Don Berman doesn't okay? So I'll probably say, Mr President. You know, you have a lot of people are talking about you like your, your can bid don't do that. No, no. But you trust me. It'll be good. Have to find a good way of respectfully approaching these topics. I know if you wanna talk to him, for instance about how he a, let's say he disrespected Bob Mueller on d day. Did you hear about that? All right. What don't you say this, Mr President, you gave some very wonderful remarks at the d day memorial. The seventy fifth anniversary. It was absolutely beautiful. Don't you think your comments about Bob Mueller probably were best reserved for another time? All right. All right. Don't you hitting well I'm not doing the interview. Well, I'm it. Go ahead. Margaret, if we're talking to him about it. Don't you think that you're? Yeah, that's a good one and then the stuff like that. I mean I don't wanna but by the time I interview that stuff's going to be yesterday's news. I'll probably be interviewing him about economic stuff. See this, what is what you take credit for President Obama, y'all? Okay. I'll say that. Why do you take credit for president? He'll throw be out of that. They have been widely successful, people have enjoyed them immensely, and we'll be happy to bring this to you, so Vernon. Welcome to the program, and congratulations on your own marathon. I I'm happy. I will see how that rolls out but yeah, I'm very about that. The forty hour marathons that we do have different gifts and different people than Phil Phil's interview. They turn out to be of people in a very, very popular. You've turned out to be one of the more puck. And our guests on the Phil Hendrie show. I feel about that. I think that I, I laugh, along with Bill because I know that you guys get a big kick out of me losing my temper. I mean, we're not mocking, you openly all the time. I think I mean, I've had people say coach John to fill in ratio. You make me laugh all the time, and I and I'll know that was, you know, I was just talking this morning about being humiliated by some parent or having some guy come in and wanna foot long. And, you know, make all the crew jokes. Are you still over at subway, by the way? Yeah, I'm in subway. But, you know you guys pretty much turned out the garbage when you, you got me to admit that. I don't really need the money. Good thing. Now, if you'll need the money we'd have to worry about you. Oh, yeah. Like you guys worry. Yeah. We do man. I don't I don't think there's anything good about a teacher having to take a summer job. I just think it's a disgrace. I really do. I agree with you there. Thank god. It's not that the case for me. What wasn't the case for you? Oh, yeah. It was the case. A lot of times, I had to pick Joplin summertime. Don't worry about it. A lot of a lot of my friends of mine. So getting back to your marathon, these are brighter times. Oh, look you call these spreader time. I know that people laugh at you, but you, you have a wonderful way of putting things and this is by popular demand. People want to want to hear you. All right. Well, if you wanna come out of laugh at me that's gonna be a week from in a week from moral weaker Marl. Which is eight seven is. Eight hundred fifteen that would be the fifteenth and the sixteenth. Yes. All right. Fifteen sixteen. Go ahead. I mean, you know, but. Man, what do you have a memorable time that you're on Phil show that you remember that? You enjoyed. I mean, no, but I'll tell you one that I am. I wasn't pay wasn't pleasant, but I'm very proud of it, and that was brought up by what Phil listeners the other day when I was in at eleven I didn't go in to the African American neighborhood, because I you know, I felt it was necessarily dangerous. I just wanted to find what I thought was a toughest bar in town. Okay. The black bar. All right. I mean, I'm sorry. But. And then you use the racial slur. You did. Man. I did. But I did it on purpose. Will you were trying to get killed? No. I was not trying to get killed. I was trying to prove look, I was crazy. When I was a kid. Okay. I admit I was crazy. I was driven crazy by mother with a man. She was a ball. Breaking. Let's watch it. I had a mother, I had an old early protective very inappropriate mother who kissed me on the lips and walked into the bathroom with their with robe open. Remember this he talked about it. You remember any of it? Where were you this is some of the hot stuff? Nobody is. Nobody brings that up. Believe me. I just heard you go. Nobody brings that up. Believe me, man. Oh man. What's going on? Mr. little nervous. I'm not nervous. I'm just, you know, I don't want to bring up stuff that's going to be uncomfortable for you. What was tell me about the time that you went into this bar. I went into a bar because I wanted to prove all the guys at school. Just my mother, kiss me on the lips when she was dropping me off that I was on some kind of see. And I was kind of a mom. Oh boy. Man. You were always afraid of that as a kid, I was, I told I tell my school to this day, and I tell anybody who wants to be on my football team. You wanna you wanna bring your mum. Man. Take it easy coach, I'm just a memory of it. If you wanna come to my football camp, leave your mommy at home. Okay. All right. So that's what was bothering me. And so I went to this place all Duffy's Morton, like three blocks from my house. He talked about going to the black neighborhood. I don't what you mean. But I will you did though. Yes, I did. And I went in because I didn't want anybody thinking that I needed by. Coach McGinn it. No. I don't think you do. I don't think you do. There's a lot of these kids seeing that just mama. A lotta neither gap and they wanna come to my camp. My football Cam. And they say. Yeah. Coach can be the quarterback. Yeah. Coach can you really you'd be a quarterback. You sure you don't need to go home and go ahead and fetch daddy, because he needs to be here for you. And they'll look home to press and they shuffle away. That's what I know. They're just doesn't believe I don't eat him. Get him out of here. Go go help and find his teddy. You have very biking and spiteful way of saying, those words. Well, I know I, I don't think I do I see them in a realistic way. So you went into this bar, I went into the bar, and I pulled out a cigar pulled out all it was a lousy stinking just are. Well, what I call it gutter turn, it was a ROY tan, man. This was a cigar. Yeah. If you wanna call it a cigar, and I said, any of you boogies? Oh, you're kidding, man. You remember he said this. Yeah, I look like I said, I was young if that kid from parkland, that casual punk can get away with calling people. He Edward now everybody's still kisses his ass. I think coach dosier can get away with purposefully, seeing boogie because I because you wanted to get your Ashby, I wanted to get my ass beat and prove I can take it. Once you got chilled. I believed I would not get killed. You believe no matter how bad those guys beat you in there. I would not die. Oh boy. You are, you know what you are mentally disturbed are. Call me mentally disturbed, but I've been head coach here for a lot of years. So I think I know if you things and I wanna you Burgi I kinda dragged it out, gotta light, and they all got up and they pulled lighters out, and they said, oh, really, we, we have a light, and I kept backing up and back I knew it was coming. I just hit the deck, and I started, you know, they started just peppering my face with rights, the left I started getting boots gut, and I told myself that I would just stare at them and go. Oh man. That probably almost got you killed. It did. Yeah. As soon as I started laughing about an hour later, they started tire, then they got up and they came over to kick my ass more. How long did this take place, but probably two hours. And then he dropped me on the floor. I bleed for while they'd go over and play cards or more drinks and come back over start beating on me again. You gotta be kidding. I don't believe a word of this. All right. But you don't have to believe it, man. But it happened. You don't have to believe any of it. But I remember being very proud of the fact, and one of them that, you know what I'm gonna take a picture this, you know what, this, this guy can take it and one of them pulled my head back and I had a big smile on my face. But you couldn't see any teeth. It was just all rid. Fries. Puffed out my face. Puffed out. I'm smiling through, like there's no teeth left. And it's just my mom's full blood. But guess what you were smiling and laughing, I was smiling. I was like. I was just saying go ahead, anybody you punks and, you know, they drag me outside and kick me into the gutter and the last thing I saw was guy stookey. And he said to me, something like you know what? Keep the pack and he threw the packets wisher suites at me that had had rat poison sprayed on them, just like those old Shurmur. Yeah. Yeah. So. Did you smoke them? You smoke those they were Swisher sweets with what they had rat poison sprayed on them. Did you smoke them? Yeah. I did that how bad I needed to get high. You're lying to me now I swear to a mighty God man, you got beat. So bad does not left? You're going ha it's all full. You must wanna blood, and then you go outside the kick you into the gutter, and they throw a pack of swishes reaching you spray with rats break, because you needed to get high. Yes. Yes. When just drink I'd have drink, if I gotta pull myself up, I had no legs. They're just gone from, I cry did I crawled into the bar. I said, can I get a drink? They said, no, you have to be able to stand up tomorrow, and then I crawled out your full of shit. Okay. That's fine. Phil, I'm full issue and talked to my while others dead. But you couldn't talk to my mother able to crawl cry chrome, only down to the corner. You know, a phone booth and I called my mom and I should pick me up at the corner of fourth Dunphy and she can't I crawled over to the curb, and I waited there, you are waiting standing. Laying there so you crawled all the way down. I crawled down, you know what I'm just saying to you, well, whether it happened or not it's a good story. I'm telling you and I know a lot of, you know, I don't like the fact you guys are asking, whether it happened or not it really happened. It did. And that's why I say to this day, Fernan dosier. I don't need my momma, because I was able to get my face kick in and stayed, and stayed and stayed conscious as I got rolled out on the street and of the gutter smoked, a full pack of Swisher sweets, sprayed with rat poison called my mother crow over to the corner and waited for their. Oh, look at the guy laughing come on. I mean, this is funny stuff. What do you laugh at? Well, how'd you get into the car? My mother came out over, you know, around the car and drag me in the shotgun. She dragged you up onto the seat. Yeah. Vernon. Dosier folks head coach had versity football coach at Bill Maher kademi. You are doing offers you your friends or family whether live in the leads internationally I. Hope you are doing fine and free soft. Wash. Hands stay safe. Beheld we just did good for yourself right now because of the year twenty twenty things are very complicated. It's a coming of this Saturday is so strange though there was a period in time where there was no sports happening. Now we got hockey I just saw an empty hockey game for the first time is ridiculous I on TV like it's. It's a strange sight to see. Even I should be used instead of the fact that I've been watching the AFC, a lot. It's still strategy. Especially in team sports because right now right next to me and I'm currently watching the Utah Jazz Slash Memphis, quizzes game I'm trying to keep up with the seedings and what's happening in the tournament where the or the standings for the team to now in the in the bubble. And it's bizarre because they have fake audiences. For the NBA game for Games, they have no one there. They just have sound popping in and sound emulating. Fans cheering. But for the NBA they're doing like a life team, I don't know how this works. So they're showing a virtual crowd but real people it's real people. And they're doing like a zoom chats or all watching it together like these are real people reacting and interacting in real time to what's actually happened to the game. But the real people. And there's like forty of them at well over forty of them and they're being shown on a big monitor screener from left to right to the basketball players. It's very bizarre. It really is because he's a real people just is a zoom or skype chat. So that's off. A. Bottom laughter skype like logos only that or zoom logo, and you're seeing all these fans out there wearing their jerseys whenever the player with free throw their moving their arms lots. They are reacting to what they're seeing onto the court and it's very strange because some of them not even looking at the actual basketball game, other phone, entire time or the board. There tried to emulate the crowd. And it's very bizarre piped in fake noises for the crowd and I was wondering. Would it be strange if the added? Be Added Radin, noises onto AFC vans because you see three or four. The next game is right around the corner. And I'm pretty sure there's a sound sample a crowd noises they can use that they have used for the game. So why can't they emulate that and have a fake? UFC. Crowd noises come in when the fighters are going to the octagon or reacting I'm will be that difficult. Though it would be. The ended in our life in a life setting I wonder how they do that. Because the inmate games, they have monitors, they have dried monitors and they have like a fake chair and you've got people. Through, zoom as easy replicated in and Begum but it'd be really interesting to see if the NFC to replicate crowds crowds being there or replicate crowd noises to drown at all the other. People talking talking talking, you're the guy the. Other People talking in the stands like. execs, you got the commentary team the fighters up to this point can hear everything that commentator saying. They can hear it. We've. We've heard of fighters who fight and fight island or fight recently during this time of the pandemic during the bubble, they said, they can here every single thing that's happening. From the computer side like while they're fighting actually is distracting for the competition talking. So. Fake Radley's it'd be bizarre like can you imagine like because now coming up this upcoming events has Derek Lewis Against Alexa Olympic keeps Derek Lewis were to knock out Olympic and then you hear this fake allowed crowd ways being Derek Lewis. It'd be very hard. It really would tap coming up. This Saturday August eight will be UFC fight night Lewis was Olympic. Derek Lewis. Is the main event got a Mario? Amari a committee of against Chris Wideman. That's a huge question. Mark can fight for me. I. Don't get why why did we match up somebody as good as a Maria that was like I was wise. It's a bad metric for Wiedeman want he would accept that but it's a great fight for Maury. We got out market puteaux up at all stared Stewart's. Who I am really high on dared Stewart's. But then is the FDA thing had happened here? Von Behind Darts to witness fighting can't wait to see what he does. A very stringent. Here we got your Julius Starting Linko Yana Kaya. WPRO. Julius. Boy Is, the ankles I fight in the AFC exits. Find the because she came in from INVICTA and she had won the best fights of okay. Yeah. So she fought against. So sterling goes debut in the AFC as she fought against for Soza and Lisa for Soza Restoring Co has to be one of the best fights of the year. And say that the two best of the year so far my head would be. Well Zhang versus you WANNA at check and least. So against. Sterling go the little best fights of the year and so. She's making her. Yes. He debut against unit Cayenne. Let the units guy is coming back from a pregnancy? Yeah. I was gone for a while and then. Yeah this report. I'm looking right now. The, strange. So she was last time could pay a fought was against Aspen ladder. and. Then she was gone for a while. I think she was pregnant and now she's giving me funding is totally Anco Day. It's going to be fighting five hundred candidates. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's probably the most excited I'm watching for now I jd. Scarred face. So alliterative revert Lewis. Dick Spicer hit or miss their either exciting thing ever and was born the ever Omari made offers Chris wideman. That's fight daring. Stewart against monkey pillow I don't know much about. Potolo by Bynum a very high dared Stewart's. ANCO. This will be fun. One I don't think this however to grow. Are they going to be treated to? Standing Battle you're. Not Been Only there you should get Scott Hoffman Oh Dang. Wow, the first to fight the first to fight to this card is really good. Very exciting here. So benadryl Scott Scotsman escapers, Julia Sir, those are two fights. that. You really should excited for all of those fighters aren't popular I highly recommend you go up wash to and appealing Kevin Harlan. Wow. We Got Kevin Harlan use of Salal. Gavin Tucker. The pillar of the premiums also really impressive also. So that's a UC finance coming up August eighth at six PM at the table building can watch. ESPN plus and hopefully he do because it's a it's a cart full of a wad of unrein fighters and it's it's nice to know all these fighters. None of these fighters are top rank at all and. For me to see where these fighters are going within the rankings here? So we go from off from up and coming prospects to and like middleman. Above top by writing their divisions with Dana White's offering advice to the rock regarding the XFL. Who Okay? So this coming from Russell INC DOT COM. If none of you have watched the XFL, it's understandable why? So the rock. Former champion Dwayne. The Rock Johnson. Yes. The guy from the fast and furious movies and his partners are in the process of pershing visit. MANSA XFL football league for fifteen million dollars. Fifty Nine Dollars Dang. About a deal kind of. I don't know if the XFL even makes any money. I know in their initial run are negative money lost money during the XFL, and the second time through I do not keep up with xfl because Oh. Civil it's this like it's. Not Suspected the athletes here. But for me I always like watching the ethics in the highest level. Martial arts there are a lot of greater all around though but big fighters from invicta wars pride a pride belts. Are there a lot of fighters other organizations that do end up transitioning or making the way up into the AFC? The, xfl though it's No different to the Canadian football. League is different from arena foot pole. I watch football. It's tough. It's really tough to watch football I. Miss My excited about it to a regular football. But congratulations mad the rocky. He could be getting the XFL football league for only fifteen million dollars and you'll see president. Dwight recently spoke with tmz about Iraq's latest venture. I. Don't know why he did but as the video buff so there's video about it. You're going to see it from TMZ sports is very strange. So so dating white talking to the camera, he says, if I was the rock I'll try to get that rolling as fast as I could I tried to get that on television ace I guarantee there's a ton of networks out there that would do it. You have all these multi millionaire athletes that don't WanNa play right now white said all these guys that don't WanNa play they WANNA sit out don't want to stay in the bubble don't want to do what it takes. Don't be surprised if the rock slides into that slot with some great programming 'cause let me tell you what people are dying to watch live sports right now. Went. Also revealed that he has the he was planning to be a sort of covid nineteen advisor to the Rock and his partners I'm actually had a call him today a walk them through what I think he needs to do so are on the covert side of this and I have some ideas for him. All Right Dana White's look at that man working alongside. The Way, the Rock Johnson wouldn't think ever be saying that ever what does restrict about this was that the rock was hurt him I said like the the deal killer for the initial xfl, not being fun to watch. If you remember the first ever xfl. There's a thirty for thirty documentary on the first. Subject Seville. It's Super Cardi. Like wrestling like the fake over dramatic aspect and scripted aspect of progressively added onto NFL, and that makes the XFL here because at one the first. First thing you see. When you saw when you watch the first ever fell the first episode was Dwayne the Rock Johnson. On a time John. Saying Hey I'm doing the Rock Johnson I love the XFL I. The xfl. The XFL is great and in the rocks arts cutting a pressing Promo about how much he loves the XFL, and if you don't like the xfl He's getting beat you up. Ridiculous. Absolute. Ridiculousness. I didn't think I'll be talking with the xfl. Eddie capacity in twenty twenty. Now the ecstasy was happening but then cancelled because of covid and I didn't really hear much about the success of the etc but if it's being sold. For fifteen dollars. An once I'm there's May podcasts but LEMme. Talked about before. Fifteen million dollars the grand scheme of things as it pertains to support Athens as pertains to athletes. Is chump change money. Toll on a secure. Now, I follow the NBA all the time do the season because I play two games in the NBA Games. Thing called my league and in my league offer, you're offering these athletes players money in order for them to decide for your team is different from being a GM. GM and the NBA NFL NHL look anything where your goal is to go and assembled the best team. Possible. and. In the NBA, there's some players who make upwards of one, hundred, twenty, five, million dollars over the span of five years. One, twenty five over five years another rocky bottle he bought an organization for only fifty million dollars and that once when they're getting yeah, the comes before tax stuff but they're making more money through advertising through bonuses through through sponsors through even it NBA athletes. They're actually making extra money ex revenue doing Patriot what page Mandela's doing and they're doing sponsored videos on instagram on their social media. So they are a ballots well over one hundred, million dollars a year I think Steph, curry he a couple years ago twit dating back to twenty fifteen he made about no another for the twenty seventeen, he made thirty million dollars. So. Yeah. Fifty million dollars to years. He athletes they'll be like, wow, that's awesome. That's amazing. But trust me fifteen million dollars in the grand scheme of things nothing I. I really do wish Jeff athletes are being paid more but then going to be a lot more money being thrown in to the AFC in order for athletes to go get to go get more money. UNIONIZATION can be Ping. If all the if all the athletes, all the athletes stop being petty divas or for themselves or try to sell themselves to try to. It's really frustrating how there is no union yet for the. Yes. See because a lot of them still act like kindergarten. Like. Draw, people in Divas. So you're listening to the GMC May podcast comeback, grabbed the shirt break covering some more news see soon. This Saturday and one of the fighters is Chris Wideman. He's been in a downturn lightly since winning the belts, he won the Belt Amy Lost Luke rock hold very decisively, and so what's going on Chris wideman the former UFC middleweight champion. Chris, Whiteman may have a positive attitude but that doesn't mean he's oblivious to the fact that he's been knocked out in back to back losses while dropping five of his last six bouts. But Hey Robin things happen. That's according to the all America who explained to 'em may fighting that his little street may have more to do with the fact that mixed martial arts is a wild and unpredictable sports and less to do with his physical tools and natural talents. You fight all these really good guys. You're not always going to get your handrails. Wiedemann. Said there's definitely randomness on who wins that night's random things that happen it doesn't necessarily mean that person is the better person in the fight. Chris Wyman who recently turned six back in June will battle former welterweight mar a committee of in the AFC Vegas events which airs exclusively on ESPN plus Saturday august Saturday August eight. I need to get a freaking W I need to get back on winning ways I. Think I have a lot of bandages in this fight. But when you're in there, you never know what's going to happen I'm taking it very serious it's tough but what I look at the guys are fought I don't think. I don't think he's up there as far as the most talented will Amari is right number fourteen. Yeah. He's probably within the more lease is our least popular lower rank guys out there has ever fought in recent years. I think it's a statement without knocking him. We'll find out this weekend. Okay. So All right. Let's talk about Chris Wideman for a bit here. I am so mimic. We talk about the all time. Right and we always say that Chris Simon has to be one of the worst champions. In yesterday history. and. Is because there is such an asterix behind his championship brains. Right. So he defeated. Okay going back the UFC. Again I'll do like A. Retrospective on Chris Vibrant here. Glenn back when Chris Line was undefeated. July sixth twenty, thirteen he'd defeated and silver and what had to be the biggest upset in UFC history. Now say it is the biggest upset ever see history wiedeman will forever be known as the guy who ended Addison Silvis Halloween. But. When. You Watch it fights. was. Leaky. Of course, I've been being overall better by the answer civil or is answer still a? Being Lazy and not taking that fight also seriously a win is a win. Yeah. WHOA. Wait a minute defeated absence of fairly but at that point, twenty, thousand dollars something that wasn't the best version of civil that wasn't twenty ten Anderson Silva. Twenty eleven even? And then Meka Skate December twenty, eight, two, thirteen later that year thousand fights that made everybody. Look at Silva. You see silly he threw the leg kick. Civil went down his leg buckled. Silver never became the same person ever again. So they could defeat server yes. He defeated and civil a second time through Kathy. So the first, he'd Silva. One could say that was Silva being unworried on motivated by Prion. Second Time as an Silva pretty much enters himself. Now let's go to a second elephants LIOTTA. Leader Machida. In twenty fourteen was really not good. Really No, they don't Gina. I think now he looks I'll say. Right now, I think really candidate Legal Machida back in back in May two, thousand, fourteen because twenty, four, liter machida. He wasn't really all that. He wasn't really all that. Good. Then he fought Vitor Belfort. Okay. So it's the wrestler Bristol striker thing would veto Belfour back in Twenty fifteen. Yeah, both was impressive. He really is. The likley wise. This was a match up. That was perfect for Chris Limits win. He was expected to fit leader Machida. Here's expected feed veto rebel war. He added in civil author technicality and the first time he defends himself, you could say. Being. UNMOTIVATED And then we get to his to find his title fight against Luke Rocco. His first loss. Everett. And yes, he history and This by ended in the third round. Is actually enforcement so. Rock. Hold was the feeding Luke Luke. Rocco was defeating Workers Wiedeman in every single round up two points and one could argue that by the end of the third round Luke crackled or reddish one. Why I gonNa Take Down Rock Old rock hold was grabbing pounded the heck of Wiedeman and there was absolutely no way Chris'll recover in the. Going into the fourth round after what he endured in the end of the third. Fourth word happens. Widens pretty much done. This point look rock old. Wiedeman goes attempt to take down look older versus Ed goes does and goes does more grand pound. and. Absolute Fun fights does more of a showcase. How great look was in that bites. Your Romero against Wiedeman. Ko by live Ne- your mayor looked Austin fights Masasi Tko by knees. They become gas. So you think gas love. Then you lawsuit chocolate all of autosomal. Dominant Grizz to stellar fighters and. Debuting debut into heavy division. He could have grappled Dominic Reyes. So yes Chris has had many. He's one, five, nine bonuses. He's one of the night bonuses he won Performance Tonight Bonuses Mobile. Times. But in the span of five years, he's won one finds and I'm not going to say it's random I. Think it's ridiculous for me to say that the reason he lost his fights was because of randomness. Trying to understand that because you have. A long time to prep these fighters, you know what the anything can happen in the octagon I would call it a random because. All these fighters have. Wasn't random for your merita throw a flying me. Kind of yeah. But there's a fight business what expect like do you like is expected every fighter who goes into the on is gonNA. pull up the same that to Jab Hook Combo and go for a shooting for. Those wiedeman expect to happen the octagon. What's IN CHRIS BINS MIND IS NOT RANDOM IN THE OCTAGON Like Is it random four luke rock hold it to a versa take down into greenwich pound. Is it random. It quits Wiedeman. Up to get knocked out via knee by Masashi. Annual. Romero. Is it random that Jacques race does that dominic res- knocked him out. Like what's random about either those fighters parking hammock and getting caught. I don't. I don't know I really don't know what why heads go right now. Now do I hope Wiedeman was this fight? Yes. I. Hope Chris I wanted to fight I wanNA see fighters bounceback his debut in let's division ended disastrously. And I don't see any reason for slide men especially at this point in his career to return to the middle. Division. Just. It's it's ridiculous. It's absolute ridiculous and I. I. Don't know I don't know what's going on Chris Wiedemann said renounce point. And so of course Simon who had an interview where he's talking about. What he expects out of himself in the upcoming fights. He talks he talks with Japan on Com saying I can never make one seventy in my life. It could never be an option said to wide movements. He looks like he the strong guy but I stay certain level strength and pace as a big guy that can wear on a guy that is a little smaller strong I think I have a big advantage in that. Course when kids here's the card advantage in addition to the size advantage expects to break his opponent mentally and physically on August eight. I'm extra great. He's a tough guy came from Russia swings heavy wild. He's on a nice win streak. He'll be competent in Timbo truthfully yeah. He's a pretty streak. He is on a six hundred win streak not that he is super known or anything, but he has been doing this in one eighty, five vision to be honest I. Think I'm better everywhere he gets tired and swings heavy not that he is knocking too many people out. He didn't have any knock knock outs he does swing wild a little unorthodox but he gets tired I think I can pick on parts on the feet create a crazy pace and mentally and physically break him. Dan. Idly to crack them with a good shots taken down climb to mount running around him for Tko he might give me his neck I'll take that too. So. I'm looking I'm looking at the. Some frontiers someone says this should be Chris Weber's last fight in the FCC loses. I kind of agree. But this anthem I am not advocate for a person their job. But they did lose six, they lose fire. Neil is five of their past six fights. And if he loses way, he's GonNa lose six of his last past seven fights. In the meantime were he hasn't WanNa fight in six years. So. Yeah. That's GONNA be. That's GONNA be really rough for him. And the reason why I am focusing Laurie now on the coming event inside the main event is because Alexa is Derek Lewis especially, rick, Lewis. It's very random. I know I know I talked about Kris. I've been saying what's random in yeah see I don't think there is readiness in the AFC but what I mean random for Derek Lewis. It's in the sense that I don't know what type of Derek Lewis I'm going to be seeing. Am I gonNa see the destroyer ductless and we're going to see very bad cardio. Deck Lewis. Always say he asked me one of the most boring or most exciting fighters in the AFC Sound curling on ESPN right now, and there's a debate on about what people expect from despite here and so. How this is going to go off Olympus. Tough. I don't Olivia the very, very good striker. Rayan radio. Is the wrestler rapper ballot battle here if let's the naked suited for takedown. Grapples with Derek. Lewis. Olympic wins. Debate or argument Derek Lewis. Is going to lose this fight if he can take a lunatic. And he's not really good at all defending himself and take downs or on the ground. So politic some down goes hurried acre chip, which isn't all the difficult to do on against Louis concern the skill level of. The election wins fights. But how is this going right now it'll be bullfighters they're going to go. I don't think Olympic is even going to have a successful down. or be that urgent and going for take down until maybe the middle to the end of the second round. In the minimum at at the minimum. On the. First Round Willie both fighters trading off. will be we'll be Olympic tried to wear down there Louis because right now who who it's harder obviously, there is one was hardest hitting guys in all the. Olympic he's a really good technical striker, not a hard nut, the hardest hitter but a really good at his boxes boxing's vary here. Now. This is like a cloth. So we'll let kicks. So let's he's going to slowly wear down Lewis. And then Louis in the beginning of the second round is going to be very reckless. He's going to be overly aggressive. And a two minute mark of Derek Lewis. Chasing Alexi. Olympic Olympic has got to go duck under he's going to shooting for a double leg takedown and go for submission victory. That's how I believe the fight is going to house go end. And I'm looking a everyone else's opinions of viewpoints here. Here's what here's favor. Dirk Lewis has only tapped out once in his UFC career. Yes and that was a two day of me. So understand Masa. Why someone would think Ahmed Derek Lewis. There's no way. humilate was admitted again, Olympic. I think. He matches perfectly, well, Dan Cormack like to see oh. That's your linen down. cormie would be very, very right now, I don't think he's ever going to happen considering Olympic stance right now in the heavy division where he's ranked and they me saying he wants this to be the last fight in his career sally as to drink but for me that I'm never going to see but Alexa, Lineker is. I think he I think in the talk ten. He's one of the only guys era with respect in terms of ground wrestling yesterday's for receiver doom. That's another person by Lennox right now, icy is a better grappler than resume. And Lewisville most partners career hasn't fought with other artists are submission be spiders in the head division, 'cause ground grapplers, heavy division, or camera rarity. See Derek Lewis has only tapped at once in the AFC career, but that was against any record me. And they're not the many grapplers in the heavy division. So Olympic Bristle Louis Louis tough guy. But. He's not as skilled as Olympic and he's not skilled enough to defend the take down to defend the wrestling and I, don't even think dirk loses boxing is is anymore better than electrolytic. I don't think so I think as a who who's more dynamic. Striker our Olympic but they're close here's one push knockouts as that's going to be worried about him. Golden state media concepts, sports podcast listen. And we are back. So coming up this Saturday is EMC fight nights. But next month is a very interesting matchup. We have Paulo Costa. Is You and I'm not sure if anyways I've seen this guy should look it up. So there's a video out there with Paula he added twenty three leg kicks in this whole seconds. and. I, look at it and I am I'm looking at how politics trading. So apparently, legs are gonNA be huge aspect or important parts to. The game against out of Sonya. Thinking about that. Because they out of Sonya fights either Sonya is counter fighter like for the most part out of Sonya fights opponents moving backwards. Any the point at the Ritz. What the hell. Fights because I'm comparing how these two fighters fought against your Romero and their other match ups but since you're. Both of them have fought Yoel and they both fought you well, very, very differently. So to fight went, it was Paula Costa pretty much putting the pressure onto your Romero and your mayor would go go pushback compared to the other side near Murphy's which is just like You got one skinny statue and you get one gigantic statue and they're both standing there. And they're both like a little bit poking each other. To very completed for Pfizer and so if what political subduing is doing is gonNA translate over to fight against Israel, it's on you. I'm guessing pollock coast is GONNA for kicks. He's GonNa. He's GONNA ample. That is GONNA try to chop down the long legs of sunshine because if you look at odds on your stance water sunny does is that he? He he leans over heaping. Okay. He puts his left leg forward. His right leg a little bit back. His left leg is kind of Benson because he's a little bit bands and put and he will his body backwards. And so with the way, how the how looks Artist on. You can always have enough time to go react to a punch. That's why he's looking good defensive fighter. He's a really good offensive either and he's really good counterpuncher and because with the way how Stance is he's kind of been opponent to go shoot in partake down, but he has a strong base that he can go into fanatic down. But only the only does he have a strong base and here's a stance. That's good. I can say the the take down he gives enough distance between his opponent and his own head because he's leading back, they can go and duck under it can go away or you can go Perry certain jabs or structure hooks. Is he stance is really good for defensive boxing and if it's a striking but the one issue that is he has as it pertains to a sense is really good at the fact that take downs and defending its head hunters, but it's not good for fighters. See shoot infrared kicks I've seen on lots and I've seen it. I'm always talking about this why don't warfighters shooting for like kicks and I know why and it's because when the student for kick. Then there's a small site opening for their put to go in him for with a hard jab or run. Punch. because. You're going for let kick your opening up to a free strike from your opponents. But while polyposis doing trading right now is he's trying to get the transition between body and legs into sharks. So he's going to do he's GonNa shoot in. Is GonNa. Go for a LEKIC. And then what is signing would do in an actual fights with after lactic is he would respond with a lead we're leaning in for job or a long punch. And what politics is going to do that he's GonNa go for a leg kick. He's going to go duck under and go shoot in for a couple small hosts small folks. Because I don't think is really good fighting in the mid and long range but once he dives in deeper because you can look at it. It's in your members of you fight on a Sonya and even his fight against Roy Tiger. On us on is a very, very uncomfortable biting within the range of dirty boxing. He's not. He's not comfortable with fighters who go in for short. Hugs not comfortable. Doing these fifty exchanges where he's not going to maximize his reach self pollock was gonNA shoot in for a let kick and he's GonNa Bates. Is assigned to go shoot in a First Round Punch or Hard Jab politicos can go counter his counter where the shirt couple hooks and it can go. Any can go and do damage onto on. But once again, the issue with strategy though is that politics are has to accept that he will go get tagged by out, of Santiago, which expected the championship Fight Right So. This year. Political Civil, definitely try to make the exciting, and if Israel to sign yet is perfectly fine going in for the Bates knowing that he can go handle Oregon door whatever cost is going to give back the this could be incredibly exciting. It could be very similar to Robert Wetter versus versus sign yet. Hopefully, it'll be a lot more exciting than your Romero resigned the but knowing how these two fighters fights considering you are. Romero is a counter fighter and pollock hosts that is type of fighter who likes applying the pressure. then. What this is just in terms of style wise the these two fighters are meant to make something will exciting. We got something here. So Daniel Cormet his last fight is coming up this month his potential ass fights against number medoff and is coming in from a major dot com and that during the Korea says he was taken aback by could return four. Yes he took before. So Khabib is making a comeback on October Zuma who's GonNa come back in September but house before his father's passing now he's GonNa shoot in, for October, return. It was short time ago, Dan cormie uncertainty about cobwebs fighting future in the wake of his father passing. Then could be. But then could be was booked to defend his lightweight title against engaged and may surprise about the time line the timeline being UFC fifty, four on October twenty, four Baotou Corby number grid, our good friends and teammates at American Academy and. Cormie has been seen firsthand. How Tat Lee bound the relationship between Kabila's with his father Koreans. pleased. Previously, you vote his concerns about how soon if ever eagle would soar back into the octagon, the light we tell you about is now official with Inter, champion just engaged against Khabib and Daniel cormet says he's a little nervous. Is according to emory junkie always a little nervous initially, not nervous I was taking a little back. To the show for ESPN talking about it. I have heard that be was looking more at getting going sooner than later. So when the announcement was made, it didn't surprise me because I had the inclination it was going to but I thought he would still be away for a while but nothing makes me happier than might shaping coming back and defending his belts. Cormie has an important fight of his own coming up against the coach. and Dan himself says our preview like there's a, there's a video preview about Cormie Tokyo his upcoming fights and he says I'm probably going to be taking a step back. So. I'm going to Austin in the year twenty twenty how predictable it is. There a lot of fighters. Leading and it makes the most sense right now. So Henry Pseudo. He's he dropped to tell divisions. Like. He was shape for two different divisions and then retired. There speculation for maneuvres that Shuki be retiring and she champion for also two other divisions. Any who would challenge who was a champion And then you hear John j-o-h-n saying that he's open to vacating his title. Then have Daniel Cormet. Who if he were to defeat steep would be the heavy champion Hebrew tire as champion. And any of toby number made off where it is speculated. That, he will retire undefeated. That's FEB system engaging and if to be boarding matched up against DSP or some other person. Here retire thirteen Oh as lot as lightly champion. Currently so far. There are very few constance happening right now in the AFC as it pertains as champion. Let me look at all the champions at right now and how many of them were. Okay. How many of them were champions coming up in the twenty? Look how many of them were shampoos nineteen and retain it through three twenty me right now. So we have. John. Jones. Could, be getting his lottery belts. Davison pig radio just recently became the fly champion just a month ago. Peter Leon just became Batman's champion just a month ago. I was at a rookie he recently what he recently when the belt from X. Hallway and the offended properly great for him. But coming to become to twenty twenty men nobody would predicted walking off ski becoming the champion. Then we have Khabib who we don't know what his status is. We don't really know Kamar Mon- He seems to be one of the only champions out there that's consistent and that's available. But he was postponed against Gilbert Burns in that fight dropped. And if I get sorry Mazda at all. And Lucille has wanted more like likeable personalities out there in the AFC. We have a lot of Sonya. Who is a great fighter but his research performance against you are Merrill really sowed a lot of people. And looking over we got sleepy milch. But. If we lose the bill against Daniel Hormay, the Dan Courtney will go with vic the belts the Amana Nunez is a double champion Valentino Chink in news beautyrest. Also, for all, we know values Janko, she's currently unavailable. She was she was divided gets you want. Calderwood. And since Valentina is. Recovering through it through an injury Calderwood ended up fighting Jennifer Maya and Jennifer my end up taking place as the contender. and. The male Willie Zhang, and we don't know what we can speak these shanty comeback near twenty twenty because all all of this whole covert pandemic shoe. So, yeah. It's It's a mess. It's a total total mess right now in the grand scheme of being. As it pertains to the champions. I'm GonNa tell you right now by the Year of twenty one, we are going to have a completely different set of champions. By the end of the year twenty one, we're gonNA have a different set of champions. All. New. I. Don't know what to expect the cause so much can happen in the AFC and just the urine now currently so far Michael Champion, my favorite shape ins are wealthy Zhang and is Sonya. Champions to watch right now because I because I know. I. Can expect those to to still compete at the highest level in the next two years in their respective divisions. That's what I can expect come on. We hear rumors of corned one rumbling that he's going to stick him moving up to light weights and if he does that what's going to happen to agree with rate belts I'm not really sure also the budgetary division is comprised of a whole lot of unlikable people. So that's an issue I know with worldwide division and we go from a horrible people to really good people soon, coming in from bloody about our COM wonderboy. Stephen Thompson says Kobe Covington is terrible and tries way too hard. Won The nicest people ever in the NFC wonderboy Stevens obstinate currently ranked number six in the division wonderboy Stevens Hampson in an arena discussing about public personas even Thompson being one of those fighters out there that's getting really popular in on Youtube because you probably. Have seen before says UFC fighter Stephen. Thompson breaks down martial arts scenes because guys, martial arts also any and breaks down scenes from movies in his interviews a lot like he's doing really good job. Make himself look as good as he can to the public image here talking about personas what are we Thompson to observation? That's some fighters are Kinda McGregor with his gift for Gab, and the authenticity of the Diaz brothers make them natural spotlights, but the same can't be said for others. Like Kobe Comington and who is terrible at it and is trying way to hard all the same one boy Stephen Thompson says I just want to know what he has to say about me whatever it might be. You can bet it. From a hot from a hot tub next to a woman who looks very paid to be there. Well. It's super wholesome for of over there. So One, thing Thompson. Regardless of where you see puts Thompson the the thirty year old says he feels great and hopes in retirement comes later rather than sooner as eastern seven, the guy looks awesome for the seven man. Man. He's only thirty, seven I. Does like. Thirty, two, thirty, three. Maybe. But that'd be a fun match up wonderboy Stephen Thompson Against Covington the story of good versus evil that's I. Think. In terms of lane in terms of a narrative that's a very fun one and obviously everyone would cheer for Stephen. Thompson. Do agree with wonderboy year yes. I'll. Rony and that's There definitely are a subset of fighters, actually a growing number of fighters over the past couple of years there are trying to be pro wrestling heels or person characters to get themselves over. Now, Kobe Comington has successfully done. It's in a very aggravating annoying way. I'll be like it works. Kobe Covington. was able to get himself popular enough to go get in for a title fight and get some people looking at him. So I can't deny that what he did. It is working wealth rear. But that doesn't mean after like the guy. So. But but Kobe risen by Stephen Thompson in terms of narrative and terms three, the fight that can be booked. That's GonNa be a really fun matchup and our love to see if fight between those two fighters because a great fighters and be it'd be fun story. Good rece- bad. And we are back and so every park the end off with something that strays away from just being an news and I found a forum here talked about this last week in that I always enjoy. Trying to understand why people are into into certain aspects as a pervasive mixed martial arts earlier today, I was doing an interview with two people who don't watch mixed martial arts and they give me very different responses. One of them said that there. I told them hey, what's the I think of when he of mixed martial arts fan one person said Wall I think of some dad. I think of a dad. Wrong Tattoos. A. Bunch of dumb. Face. Tattoos. Bush Adum Body Tattoos and they're all drunk. They're holding a beer enders yelling in front of the camera. And we've all seen that image was seen the weird white guy with the whole with the words UFC or the letters GMC forehead with the beer being like year like those guys the type of person that would be running affliction shirts and another person said that their image of the every day mixed martial arts fan is just a person who really cares about being in shape a lot. To, respond to there, and it's always interesting to see what people are into into with mixed martial arts and I'm right here this coming in from read it. Emmy comments a what are your hotcakes and last week I talked about this and I'll read some more about it and I'll give my personal viewpoint and you yourself. So you can think of whatever you want to think about the hot takes look heartaches. Do you have messages on Instagram facebook twitter on your heartaches are for mixed martial arts. I one coming in from noodles. I try to hype bites for my friends who are huge sports fans and they seem so apathetic to it's there were all in gross in a ten hour. Michael Jordan documentary the last dance which I watched. But I don't think any of them tuned in for the fights. Last week doesn't make sense to me but whoever floats your boat? Are then so I'll be honest with you right now that ten hour documentary Michael Jordan is a really good documentary and. That dog maturity is way more engrossing. Then a whole lot of mixed martial arts fights. On the honesty when I watched horry Mazda, all risk, Martin Luth Mon- when it got to the third round that's why he's popped up my phone and started like text messaging people are looking at brandon videos or random means look hard looking at social media and stuff because it got really bored by the end of the third round for the fights who Michael. Jordan documentary, it's always Bam Bam Bam the way how that documentary shots with pacing with its editing is always something happening on screen odors. No moments in Documentari- where you're. GonNa. Learn something whether it be five seconds. Ten seconds you're learning something. You're learning the narrative here for mixed martial arts you can also, but then again. There's a lot of patients. There's a lot of patients for mixed martial arts that has to. That's really The every fan. So I was asking to, what would it take for mixed martial arts to go be interesting or to be enjoyable to them I ask them other friends about what can we martial arts do and? Some of them said I don't like. It's when a lot of these fights are just one dude wrestling or wanted grappling or you don't get the full context or the narrative or the slur here because I told them. Hey, who's Hurry Mazda? All you can. You can write an essay about the narrative kiss stories of fighters causal of Ben Aspirin of a cool becoming of a Conor McGregor. And I felt like in order for you to really get these characters you have to go out of your way and try to sort them out. All right then. You can watch. The countdowns and you can hear the commentary team talking about Kobe Covington. You can hear the the press release and stuff. But until you're bottomless, really captivated by Kobe, Covington in your him through the twitter instagram and through mortal source sorts feeds, you're not going to get the full scope of Kobe come and I says documentary the viewer is being hand a to all the situation but if you're. If you've never heard coming in and then he's prepped up to go fight against Harwood. She is practice fight against. You need to go and backtrack two years. No. Like three years of Kobe Covington stuff to get Kobe Comington save the Senate if if artificial if she Were to Tara Right now, and here's somebody. And I tried to get my fans into watching that Chilton match they're not gonNA care. because. In my mind because I know, chill sudden's character in the stick and followed his career for a long time I understand she'll sudden's character for them. They just see this guy who just talking trash and that's about it. And One and one of them would be like. Well, what's a special about this guy? Was the special Senate and out some sucking he's really good at trash talking and I'm like, yeah but. Like, the other person trash talk also makes his trash shocking anymore. Apparently, trash talking isn't all that appealing especially if the person's doing the trash-talking. He doesn't have that much birth wrong merits. And chose strongest merit is the fact that he lost. It really is like his greatest ever is the fact that he had a really good showing against entered and Silva. Almost one. And in the world of sports where there are so many winners, it's hard to place. The narrative of someone almost winning and a high pedestal. This Show. Sunny now I understand. I get it kind of appeal for that for that type of character for that type analogy there. But for the casual fans, they don't really get that much. What here I'm not sure there's this unpopular. The machine has truly built to stars like last decade Last Decade Being Rhonda. Connor is izzy. John Bones are not mainstream yet they're not mainstream. Is Your Sonya and John Jones is not mainstream and the reason why is is it mainstream? is because the FCC or over is his agents? Are there up placing them in like in the forefront of media? I don't think Izzy or John. Jones care about TV shows, commercials and movies. There's one do their own thing. Like if for someone in the AFC. Star, they gotta go beyond the Octagon. Who are so focused on the octagon they don't really care about anything else and I don't mind that at all Kobe in tries that he tries but seven and doesn't have a future in movies and television time Woodley to an extent does that right now like he's playing the game But he's such an Michael Dude that it's hard to actually be committed to following this dude when he tries to venture out into movies and reporting and acting all that stuff it's difficult. I think shot Malley can do no. No No. If you want the NFC needs another big mainstream star. They got really push an athlete who has larger aspirations of the Octagon. And is likable or and it's interesting or indoor intriguing. Or Brassiere do most fans really think it's that big of a sports to the masses. So. Many working on this mini dockery now. I'll get to it but I ask people, hey, how how much money is being brought into the and I and I brought up the average salaries for NBA and NFL players and they all said, the same thing said, okay. If the average salary for an NBA player is points of million dollars and the average salary for an NFL player is about to is about two point, seven, million dollars there them in their own mind are like well has to be at least over a million or one point five million. Dropped the bombshell that it was just under twenty thousand dollars and they are freaked give this team shop phase. So yeah. Even, casual fans. Imitators should be paid higher. But then again, man is being paid under two K. One, hundred, fifty k. a year, which is well a lot of. Mid till top tier fighters are making even fighters in the top five in the rankings. Cave. Turmoil entirely is really up there in terms of his status in the. Only. Major. K. For some people two hundred as lot for athletes. Small potatoes small. Someone says Henry Pseudo can defeat Derek Lewis I don't know. About here. Your marriage actually horribly your marrow he purposely doesn't wrestle. I have come to the conclusion that although he's a great wrestler, he doesn't WanNa. Wrestle. He's doesn't and it's not because of. Lack of him not wanting to do it though as more of a sense of like it's just not healthy for him for his neck. Surgery enough he'd rather be more comfortable boxing and wrestling. Runner is he could come back and beat ninety five percents Bantamweight Division now, I don't really think about that. I. Don't think every NBA or NFL player would be a great fighter. There'd be agree athletes Altieri. Now an NBA player or an NFL player. pursuing. So, NBA player or an NFL player pursuing the path of MMA fighter. It really helps them lots. It really does it's no different from let's say you do track and field all right you to track and field, and then you're making the transition into boxing. Well, Bingo track and field shows that you're hasn't cardio and cardio dedication yet the you already have your mindset nearly know how to deal with training, how to deal with long long long hours of training and so. A person who's really good at running Kudos like the sprints or marathons up there to make the transition into being a fighter. While they have all of physical tools already to an extent, you just have to mold them into being a great fighter. Also. Here's an amateur athletes they're naming their far far from the best athletes in the world, and that's why Jeb on them it really is the truth. With all US talking about the camera shirts, how about Reebok making custom shirts only for a top fifteen and fighters in every division it's good. Aesthetically analysts casual fans know who's elites are to watch. Okay. I don't think the casual audience cares all that much about the trunks as being warned by fighters. Only think. So now my friends was able to spots like all the brands like she watched like one fight. On. Her own head memories, all the brands which is insane to me. So you like, okay those fighters dare look at the monsters are right there got rockstar and over there Oh look at that time company. John Jones is being tested by God about right now. Kind of weird probably, not unpopular opinion by yes. He abandon the pay per view system. I get mixed the money hand over fist but I I enjoy seeing the day where fighters get paid way more the way I. See it I see happening through massive sponsorship deals. It's not the has nothing. The paper be has nothing to do with the fighters making as much. It's the sponsorships and small ship stems from the UFC with the money going in towards the pockets of the higher brass of the organization and then. Then mix of budget of how much of that money is then being given to the fighters. So pay per views in my viewpoints do not actually play a major role or big role for how much money eight fighters away to make all matters are the TV deals. What matters are also the sponsorship deals that the UFC makes whether or not the is paper new or not actually according to eat a lot of. Pro Wrestlers that actually lost money when they made the transition from paper view into having all of views being purely. Their revenue like necklace chemistry. In the W mark. So right now, if were to move from the people of you thing which is outdated and move towards streaming and have it be more accessible, they're not the fighters are actually GONNA lose. Money. They'RE GONNA lose money and the are GONNA slightly lose the money so it doesn't help out all around if they transitioned from reviews and to truly streaming or some other avenue. Now, if fighters WANNA make more money, then the FCC should go in micromanage budgets and increase the budgeting for how much they're GONNA pay the fighters It's unacceptable that they charge so much product and gives so little to the fighters. I don't know. I'm the type of person nowadays because someone is complaining that. Okay so I pay for ESPN PLUS I pay for ESPN plus and I by the views I know. Some of my friends right now who currently got laid off actually do as a result of the COVID nineteen issue. And Sixty dollars or one hundred bucks it's not allowed to them I mean it's a lot to them but to a person like me and to a person to a subset of my of my group of friends. Hundred Bucks or sixty bucks a month. Is Not all that much. It really isn't in the grand scheme of things it varies person person. To me spending sixty, two, hundred bucks per month is an all that much. I'm spending way more than that per monthly basis right now for Muslims. So it's not a hugh that's big. That's big money for me, but it's big money to all of our friends and it's understandable. Everybody has their own budgets. And Salah. I got through that pretty quickly.
