"I'm going with two. Patrick being called one of the great characters of horse race in three architecture house, even though there's this qualifying one. He's one of my good friends. He's a great character and one of the greatest horsemen I've ever been around. I want to seek Patrick being cold. And in my eyes, the greatest jockey of all time, Patrick dates, those are my two favorite patricks and horse racing that might actually end. Help you both wearing green today. You know, there's a bunch of them, Dale did mention those, but a couple other Jackie. Patrick valenzuela, even though he had some problems, he still had a pretty decent career, Patrick husbands, the Canadian jockey, won some sovereign awards. Remember the trainer pat Kelly, who just retired in New York after a long and distinguished career grandma from one of the great families in New York race in the Kelly family. And you know, if we're going to talk about the female side, I guess Patricia would work, right? I mean, look at cocci. Coach Jackie, who had the most wins for a female writer until Julie krone came along and doctor patty Hogan is niched out quite a career for herself in the veterinary field. And you know, there's a whole bunch of horses that go over there and I'm going to just throw one out who is a dear friend of my God, colleague here, the great patio Prado, third in the Derby. Loving one of the greats. And there's plenty of horses names. I mean, you could go on forever and ever. How about a great steaks race? The Pat O'Brien. Yeah. Doesn't get any more Irish than that. I think there was a horse named leprechaun, wasn't there. Oh, I'm sure. Sure. There has been. I'm sure. Timmy, you stole my thunder with pat Kelly. I was going to bring pat Kelly up. He joined me for an hour on my trainer talk show back on the 1st of March and really enjoyed that visit looking back on his career. He's a class act and a lot of fun to talk with and he has great stories too. And then Dale, you brought up pat day. Pat day was somebody when I first started getting into racing. I couldn't stand pat day because all I did at that point, I wasn't involved in the sport professionally in any way like this. I would just bet races. And every time pat day would win, I would lose. Every time pat day would lose, I would win. So I was not a pat day fan in any way, as a matter of fact, the very first Kentucky Derby, my wife and I ever attended the year we got engaged at the Derby. 1998, there was a gentleman walking around with a hat and he had two buttons, one on each side of his hat. On one side it said, pat day sucks. On the other side, it says pat day still sucks. And I remember trying to buy the hat from the guy or at least the buttons. He wouldn't sell them. That's how much I couldn't stand pat day. But now over the years, getting to work with packaging and he is one of the great people that you'll meet not just in thoroughbred racing, but in life. So yeah, I think pat day certainly qualifies for me. One of the finest gentlemen ever to be on the race track and one of the people who taught me as much as anybody ever in the game, you went to ride and all my horses when I was first starting out took a like to me. And taught me a whole lot and love the man. Yep. Yep. All right, well, one final segment guys, you know what that is. It is our parting shots of the week, by the way, the showdown, no score update last week. And guys, I don't think either one of you have a horse from your stable running this weekend, correct? That's correct. I got one that's even on the shelf. That's why I think I should get to pick a new one. Oh, that's why you want to pick a new one. Yeah. Yeah, with my number one pick. Yeah, it's number one pick. Mike, what's the score again? I forgot. Dale, you're ahead. You're willing to 12 to ten. All right. By the way, you can head to horse racing radio dot net and see an updated leaderboard every single time we have a change. We post it there on our homepage. You can check out the showdown with Dale. And Tim that runs through the Belmont stakes. Okay, time to wrap it up. It is your parting shots, one final point to end the show. Timmy, let's go with you first this week, my friend. Well, I'm going to blow my own horn a little bit because I am going to get a check in the next few weeks for my first

"The united states and that was a distinction that she held throughout her entire career in fact until four years after she retired so she retired in nineteen eighty-four she. She had a riding accident that sort of forced her into retirement and then in nineteen eighty eight within about a seven day period. Patty cooksey surpassed her wins record. And then julie krone later that week but it took four years of being an active before any women caught up with her so she was really ahead of her time and and she was my mom. So i didn't know any different ron. I just grew up thinking that you know women can do whatever they wanted. And and one of the things. I've always attributed to my mother. Is that if she ever did experience anything like any sort of female discrimination. She's certainly never david voice. And so i never heard her talk about that in any way i feel like she honestly felt like its people weren't giving her opportunities divide. It's either because they didn't know how good she was. She wasn't good enough yet but either way she was going to remedy that and and so she instilled in me a belief in. I can do whatever i want. And that is strong ethic. A strong work ethic can create a lot of luck around you. Yeah that was my mom it was. It was a really you know. I didn't realize. I was being raised by pioneer woman Who was such a such a role model. But i i certainly look back in when i reflect on it. I'm grateful when i take a look at jockey's the size of them. And i can think of your mother being the slight size that she was to climb on a horse that has a thousand or twelve hundred pounds. I just kind of shake my head a little bit. Did she ever give any thought to that. Or how did she acclimate herself to being a jockey. Well i can tell you this one of the things that she would often say that the muscles that she uses the most to ride a horse is her brain and so you said it you know jockeys way a little over one hundred pounds and horses way around one hundred pounds and so you're certainly not gonna win on grew and so if you have to have that line of communication between the rider and horse be wide open and if it's not open you're not gonna get much accomplished because you're not gonna force them to do anything they don't wanna do one of the things that that makes you know. Horse racing work is that courses are born competitors. They're racing each other out in the field and so you can get them to think that it's fun to let us go along for the ride. Then they're happy to take you on the ride and it is thrilling ride. But you're not going to be able to force them to do it now. There are instances where you end up in a bind and you have a horse. She's trying to run to the outset fence or you have to pull up abruptly because There's a reason in front of you that you've gotta pull up quickly and you've gotta get strong. You gotta get strong pretty fast. And i know i trained in the gym. My mother trained in the gym Jockeys pound for pound in considered among the strongest athletes in the world. And i think that's true. I know that when i was a jockey i was certainly able to bench. Press my own weight which was a little over one hundred pounds on my mother could chew and so you you definitely do need to have the physical strength but the advantage that you have female athletes competing against male athletes in the field of being jockey is that we all have to come in under a certain weight so it's not like in basketball or football where you have male competitors that are just much bigger than the females that they might compete against you. Know the jocks run because at scale at levels plainfield i was wondering and then shaking my head a little bit. When i saw that your mother also was an exhibition bull rider. I don't know what gets into anybody's mind to do that. I'll tell you another story about her real quick. He loved horses from the time she was a kid and she did not grow up in a family where anybody introduced her horses and so she went to the. She grew up in davie florida. Which is a pretty western area. Florida and she went to the local rodeo and she was seventeen at this point she found out that they needed a trick rider for their exhibition Show that they were going and so she applied for the job master if she's ever trick road before and they had the horse and they have the equipment she said absolutely well. She had because she went to the library. That day got hired went to the library that day. Got a book and figured it out and same with the exhibition bull. Riding by the time she was nineteen years old. she's been a trick rider. An exhibition bull rider card dealer in las vegas at a blackjack table and a semi truck driver and she was five foot to. Qc incredible she she really is. You began your professional career as a jockey in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. You were one of d wayne. Lukas is first call jockeys in the nineteen nineties. And i'm just wondering when you mounted that horse for the first race. What would through your mind as you got into the gate when you wouldn't talking about writing for lucas. Well i miss you know by the time you get to the gate. It's just all about the horse and and it's really any other race you know you're thinking about house you're doing and how what kind of position do you want to get away from the starting gate. I had already gotten over by then the thrill of oh my god. I'm writing for the fall. Made at keeneland. I remember it. Because i had been going by his barn and trying to get mounts for him and then pat day was out of town one day and he put me on two horses but they were was originally a ride and So yeah the thrilled but by the time you get to the starting gate. You're already thinking. Strategist but i do remember after the race that he told me i did a good job but i overrode just a little bit which means that. I got a little bit ahead of my horse. I was riding faster than my horses. Go but I ended up writing for them the following spring when we came back up to keeneland the by that summer i kinda was go to rider because he had a lot a two year olds at that time and hat date and wanna ride the two year olds and i love to the two year olds and i got on most of them in the morning so i knew him really well and i was known to be a really good as they think. Eight riders so it was good away from the gate to the chiro and so by the time we get to the spring of nineteen ninety five. I was riding quite a lot more. And then and i learned an awful lot from it. You know. we call him the coach because of his background of being a basketball coach. But he's also coach coaches everybody around him assistant trainers his jockeys because the agents in the bar and everybody tell me about the strategy aspect. I've always been fascinated in that in sports in general but particularly in horse racing since a reactionary type of sport. You're not quite sure what's your horse is gonna do. You don't know what other horses are going to do. How do you anticipate things. How do you prepare yourself mentally for what happens in a race when a junkie looks at a race they strategize on how what are their best chances plan and so we look at it. A little different than handicapper does because handicapper looks to see who will win where jockey looks to see how they can win. And so you you when you look at the race. You're already seeing two or three different possible scenarios and so you plan for planet but that plan b. and plan to your also possibility in the good trainers know that also one of the quotes often said by trainers is that as far as giving jockeys instructions that the good jockeys don't need them in the bad jackie's won't follow him. So what does that do right. And so the talk about in advance of the race One of the funny things about riding for wayne is i think people know that he always almost always likes to have horses forwardly placed and so in the paddock. He would always say to me. I want you laying one-two-three three coming out of the gate. If he ever said to me. I want you laying once you three or four. I thought oh my god there's no speed it all. He never went back to four. he was always one. Two three was a position trainer. He wanted his sources to be in position from the start and make them come chase us or at least being positioned to to sort of you know. Get into really good stocking position on the horses. One or two horses in front of you. But so yeah you do talk with the trainer and you do look over the race and then after that you have to like you said make split-second judgments out there and the trainers gotta write a doctor that they trust and make those judgments and sometimes you come back and in the trainers upset and you explain it to them. What happened and why and they understand. And sometimes they're still upset but for the most.
