"The ground communities that are really defending their territories and to reach protecting thirty percent of. The Planet by twenty thirty in order to stay below one point, five degrees, Celsius is going to be a huge effort yet a statistic that is mind boggling to me but also gives me optimism is it will only take one percent global GDP, which has nothing if all these countries start on pulling their resources for this. So I'd say that, of course, like getting rid of the fossil fuel industry phasing renewable energy like. That that to me is like the precursor solution, but we can't be destroying these vital carbon sinks that sequester tons of atmospheric carbon in unexpect- ourselves to be okay. Another solution that comes along to the thirty by thirty goal is legislative reform. So there's an organization I really loved called Eko sidewalk co founded by Joe. Joe and on polly Higgins who passed away A. Few years ago but echo side la basically is the idea of getting the international criminal. Court to adopt either side is the fifth crime against humanity, which is up there with homicide genocide. This legislative piece I think is key to informing corporate practices in policy decisions. So I'm I come from a family of land-use attorneys. My mother and father were attorneys I never thought I'd. Coming full circle loving legal applications things. But I do think it's really important like there's earthjustice out there those rights of nature or Egos Ibaka to really have lawyers defending our planet and defending territories that are sequestering a lot of carbon the Amazon alone sequester five percent global greenhouse gas emissions, which is massive. So we have to take care of it and I think we need to regenerate places we've destroyed as well. So I hope I didn't gone wrong about no that's awesome. I feel as though preserving land. Is such an underrated response as a climate solution because it is quite often that people think we need these big sexy carbon capture machines or things that they might be helpful but they don't exist yet or things that are just not nearly as important as making sure that you're preserving what you have I think about it a lot actually kind of like skin care, which is perhaps a little shallow but I'm like I'd rather just put on my sunscreen take care of myself now than worry about it in twenty years. Yeah it's just a matter of preservations. Also, I really liked that you mentioned the Amazon. So frequently because when we talk about ECO side when you talk about Loss Carbon, sinks I, think about how up in arms the Internet was about the fires in the Amazon a year ago. That are still going on today and I think that when you talk about Egos side and influencing corporations to really take account of how they're treating the land and how they are getting their product in the first place reminding their products in the first place I just think it's all very full circle at its a lot more connected than people realize. Absolutely I mean, our bias fear is so interconnected I think people in general have a out of sight out of mind mentality until it happens to them like it's not in my backyard that maybe it's in your backyard, but the deforestation of the Amazon is directly correlated to fine permafrost or the rapidly melting Arctic, and it's all interconnected because our biased fear is this beautiful functioning unit and unified system..

"I'd. Seen Al Gore's inconvenient truth in Leonardo's before the flood and I knew that climate change was problem but I thought okay. This is a problem a hundred years out two hundred years out nothing that I personally have to worry about in my day to day life but it's a problem and I support the environment and then I just started reading more I think through that Gateway of Health in the environment and I went down an environmental rabbit hole on starting reading a lot about climate change I found myself getting more and more. I guess you could say depressed feeling helpless feeling despair because a lot of I was reading was pretty doing gloom pretty dire based on science and scientific predictions fast forward two thousand Seventeen Miho community experienced the tabs fire in it was nine billion dollars worth of damage to our community. It felt like the apocalypse I. Remember driving through the freeway in there was fire on the freeway driving through like A. Of Fire in the hospital was burning on the left hand side. And I just remember that was my wakeup call on. Okay. The climate crisis is right here in right now on I was twenty seventeen and. There needs to be way more action on this I've learned through my work with Leonard Dicaprio Dacian in supporting through philanthropic grants, women on the frontlines of the climate crisis that less than three percent of all philanthropic giving those to the environment. So I decided as a philanthropist I only wanted to focus on the environment because if we don't have clean it nothing else matters. So I started focusing on my efforts there and then after the twenty seventeen fires, I had a wakeup call in Pitney. I actually ended up taking a sabbatical from my family business and having the crazy idea to launch my own environmental organization because I saw white space was there were so many amazing organizations out. There doing great work for the environment but they're all competing for that less than three percent of philanthropic giving in their all silo doing their own thing and I saw an opportunity.

You know obviously, very emotional. I'd like to. Thank. Everyone. For coming out. The support of my son? Would this senseless attempted murder that was committed on. When Jacob Blake senior stepped forward. They. Son He almost couldn't speak. Six Seven Times. Seven. He didn't matter. But my son matters. He's a human being any better. And then we heard from Julia Jackson Jacob Lakes mother as I was writing through here. Through the city. I noticed a lot of damage. It doesn't reflect my son. Or my family. She mentioned the damage that she'd been seen around Kenosha and she spoke very powerfully of reconciliation. Do Shakeup. Justice on this level and examine. Your. Heart. We need healing. And then we heard from one of his sisters. So many people have reached out to me. Selling me their sorry that this happened to my family. Well don't be sorry. Because this has been happening to my family for a long time. Longer than I can account for. It happened to Emmett to him until my family. For lead though Mike Brown. Sandra. This has been happening to my family and I shared tears for every single one of these people that has happened to. This is nothing new. I'm not sad. I'm not. Sorry. I'm angry. And I'm tired. I think that she just really wanted people to two year that and understand that this was baker than her brother. and. What are the say about? Jacob Lakes condition you know for the last two days people who'd been asking how is he doing? Is he going to survive this? When at least seven as many as eight bullets from point, blank range entered the human body. And shred through the tissue of the human body. They went to a lot of detail about what he was experiencing physically that can cause and didn't this case. Severe. And likely permanent injury. He had a bullet. Go through some or all of his spinal cord. One of the bullets had severed his spinal cord, which doctors believed would paralyze partially probably permanently, they said that it would take a miracle for him to walk again. He has holes in his stomach. He had to have nearly his entire colon. And small intestines removed. They really wanted to drive home the physicality of that of the suffering that he is enduring and they wanted to really put those facts out there and not hide them Jacob Pez a long road ahead of. A lot of rehabilitation you heard he's in surgery right now it's not going to be his last. They also said that he has been awake. He was conscious. One of the questions from reporters was. What does he think of health this? He does not know what's going on. The answer from the family was really he doesn't understand that this is going on he's heavily medicated. He's you know a lot of pain that he was still fighting for his life. There is no idea. In the condition he's in that he has become. A symbol for powerful symbol appears not it appears that he is largely unaware of everything that's happening the first thing he did when he looked at me was cried and then begin to say I'm sorry about all of this. I, asked him Jacob did you shoot yourself in the back? He looked at me and he said. Said then why are you? Sorry He says because I don't want a burden on anybody I want to be with my children and I don't think I'm going to walk again mom..

California Wine Makers Examine Climate's Effect On Their Industry

"California produces ninety percent of all the wine made in America but historic wildfires devastating droughts and other extreme weather have many in the business struggling alling with how to adapt to a changing climate as. NPR's Eric Westervelt reports a growing number of vineyard owners in the country's best known wine region. A calling for less talk and some more action on the beautiful heat lamp terraces and elegant tasting rooms of Napa Sonoma. The cabin as these days are often paired with talk of extreme weather and warming earth. It's a romantic and mealey's believes that the wine industry is something that has long term at Annapolis Lark. Mead vineyards head winemaker. Dan Petrosky shows me around the test plots lots. He's preparing three and a half acres of experimental grape varieties from the southern hemisphere and the southern Mediterranean. This research vineyard is focusing on the grape varieties. Heidi's that we believe will be important to Napa Valley or even to the future of California wine as we're thinking about how the climate is changing here. Over the course of the next couple of decades the idea is to find out which groups do better in drought conditions or in an era of colder cold snaps and warmer heatwaves Lark made was founded in eighteen eighteen. Ninety five and Petrosky is not looking to replace its famed Cabernet. But he'll test for resilience and flavor tryouts. You might call it for which grapes will become supporting according actors in the finished wines of near future warmer Napa the test plots he says or part of a broader long term strategy to try to mitigate climate change how we think about irrigation or non-irritating. How we think about keeping the temperature down not only the fruit zone but on the canopies with installing misting systems and shade cloth? So we're we're GONNA be using this as an opportunity to test not only new technologies but also the test the finished product in the absence of federal leadership on climate change a growing number wineries in Napa and Sonoma lark meter trying to reduce their carbon footprints organic farming solar panels composting instead of burning discarded vines and and most wineries in this region are now certified sustainable in the management of their energy water and soil. But I'm not sure that's enough we're dealing with which with a larger global issue of planet civility to curb carbon in neighboring? sonoma's sisters Katie and Julia Jackson Jackson aren't sure it's enough either and we need to stop talking about the problem. We need to actually start implementing and scaling the solutions. Now Julia and Katya part owners was one of the world's biggest wine producers Jackson family wines. They help run. Forty two wineries around the world from California to South Africa. Jackson recently teamed up with with another global wind giant Spain's Torres family wines to create international wineries for climate action sitting at a picnic table overlooking the vines at their La Crema. Emma winery Haiti Jackson says the new groups goal is nothing short of radically decarbonising. The world's wine industry that's an organization that's asking members to to reduce their carbon footprints fifty percent by twenty thirty and by eighty percent by twenty forty five we need concrete significant action immediately and also also for the mid- and long-term to join wineries pledged to meet those ambitious goals and show they currently get at least twenty percent of their energy from onsite. Renewables is like solar and wind and they have to agree to conduct a thorough carbon emissions inventory audited by a third party every year looking at all aspects of production. In through delivery Jackson wine has been measuring its carbon footprint for eleven years. One of several changes they made after an energy audit. They switched to lighter glass bottles cutting their emissions footprint three percent and saving on shipping and production costs are cute so far the new global wind climate group only has six six members change. Come slow in wineland tradition. Not Transformation is often the ethos. It's an industry driven by personality and passion individuals individuals who are fierce competitors sometimes averse to working together. Katie Jackson says that mindset has to evolve. We believe that our intelligence together is quainton be more powerful and more impactful than anyone. Winery trying to figure this out and go alone. There's another challenge. Many small wineries can't afford to invest in climate resilience such as an annual emissions inventory. They're struggling to get the harvest in survive. And maybe spending any extra cash on new generators to adapt to the new normal mull of rolling power blackouts due to the heightened risk of catastrophic wildfires driven in part by climate change.
