"The three men who fatally shot him on Arbery more than two years ago are likely to spend the rest of their lives behind bars a judge on Friday sentenced Travis mcmichael and his son Greg to life in prison without the possibility of parole roddy Bryan reportedly must serve at least 30 years before he can apply for parole A judge is denying a request from the Michigan school shooter's parents to lower their bond Lisa Taylor has more The judge denied James and Jennifer Conley's request to reduce their bond from $500,000 to $100,000 judge Julie Nicholson said the seriousness of the alleged crimes the ties to family in Florida and their arrest at an art studio in Detroit led to her decision Earlier of 15 year old Ethan crumbly appeared via video conference he waved his right to a hearing and the judge ordered a trial in circuit court He's been charged in the shooting deaths of four students at Oxford high school in November I'm Lisa Taylor After touring a neighborhood in Louisville President Biden pledged his full support for the residents of Colorado effected by the martial fire I'm Brad seeking This is Bloomberg daybreak weekend our global look ahead at the top stories for investors in the coming week I'm Nathan Hager Some big big changes could be ahead for Democrats in Congress and the leadership there and they could unfold in the coming weeks For more let's head to our Bloomberg 99 one newsroom in Washington and Amy Morris Nami Thank you Nathan We are watching for some turnover a change in leadership for House Democrats next year and how all of this will unfold Pretty much could determine everything for the party Joining me now for some insight is Bloomberg's longtime congressional reporter Billy house Billy it is always a pleasure Thanks so much for taking the time I'm happy to be here Nancy Pelosi's been House speaker off and on for gosh 19 almost 19 years Let's start with a look at her legacy Walk us through some of the things that she's been able to accomplish and some things that maybe she wasn't quite able to accomplish Of course everybody thinks today of her as a foil to former president Donald Trump and leading two House impeachments But her legacy really more than anything is as the first and only woman to ever serve as the House speaker And opening the door essentially to a new era of congressional democratic politics It could be argued that she also represents a generation of women's movement and female empowerment as she moved her way into the second line The presidency Beyond that of course legislative achievements what stands out is her helping to her key role in ushering in former president Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act And battling with former Republican president George W. Bush over the Iraq War Led the country through economic times the Wall Street crash And with which some have called the great recession And another and now helping with a narrow majority get part of at least so far Joe Biden's agenda through So who would replace her There's some talk that we should be keeping an eye on New York rappers in it if I came Jeffries but what would make him a candidate that people might look up to Well it's basically there's after years of closely suggesting Pelosi staying on top and not stepping aside even after losing the majority a number of would be successors have come and gone taken other political jobs or left Congress Jeffries New York China has emerged as someone who is now the house caucus chairman who can maybe reach out to what has been a fractured house caucus progressives moderates he's seen as sort of the guy who can reach out and has relationships with all those groups So he seems to be at the top of everybody's list Others like Karen Bass to California had been talked about but she's now running for mayor of Los Angeles And still others such as the number two and three current Democrats because of their age there in their 80s stenny Hoyer and James Clyburn A good chunk of the parties says that when Pelosi leaves it's time for a new generation and they don't really reflect a new generation Let's bring it down to the more granular level if we could There are going to be people listening to this who think who cares Who's the leader who's the House speaker Who's going to be taking the place of Nazi Pelosi and her leadership Explain to us why this is the sort of thing that really does matter especially as we approach the midterms Well it matters because of the way Pelosi has done her job And not everybody will necessarily do it that way Pelosi has been a hands on even commanding presence There has been no very little discussion about who calls the shots in negotiations with Republicans on legislation And who can make deals with the administration and have a Republican president under Pelosi now that wasn't always the case for instance with Republicans as John Boehner and Paul Ryan were speakers you still had the freedom caucus and other aspects of that party that seemed to themselves be calling the shots And so there's not been that kind of disarray that you see with weaker speakers that you do with the firm grass the clothes you have Beyond her shoes being hard to fill in that respect She's a fierce political and legislative tactician And also a superstar fundraiser sort of no matter who comes and goes Nancy Pelosi raises the money for the party So those are some of the aspects that would be missing perhaps with a new speaker or new minority leader depending on what happens to fall in the congressional election We are talking with Bloomberg congressional reporter Billy House about the future of democratic leadership in Congress Billy let's talk a little bit about some hope among younger Democrats that perhaps they can move beyond the centralized leadership of the Pelosi era the Pelosi clever and Hoyer alliance that you had referred to What is it that they are.
