Miami Marlins: Derek Jeter, Kim Ng make baseball history
"I want to start with What I mentioned in the update, and that is the hiring of Qiming as the new GM off the Miami Marlins. And just off the top before we get to the historical nature of this and what it means for North American professional sports, moving forward. Just it is interesting to me. You know? Inevitably, the Rockies and the Marlins will be linked. Both coming into the league together. Iraqis and Marlins or not rivals by any stretch of the imagination. It's certainly if you are Iraqis Fan and the Marlins do something good. And the Rockies. Don't You inevitably draw that line between each other. And for the longest time, even though the Miami the now Miami Marlins used to be Florida Marlins have been more successful or tasted Oldham. Its success more than the Iraqis have. For the most part, the Marlins have been one of the worst run organizations. In all of baseball. We all remember Jeffrey Loria. Would buy a championship. Did buy a championship. 97 When Edgar Renteria got that hit off of Jose Mesa and the world Syriza's Sold everybody off. Because the wage bill would have been too high. But through that, by selling off all those players, he ended up getting a lot of really talented young players. Josh Beckett, Juan Pierre Carl Pavano. And they We're able to go win a championship, and then they were all sold off. Couple of ownership changes later, a monstrosity of a stadium poor attendance. Fire sales seemingly every other year incomes Derek Jeter and we thought that it was going to be more of the same. How in the world Is Derek Jeter. Going to Be the And he's not He runs the Marlins that he has a money man behind him. That helped him get the deal done as much money is Derek Jeter has made throughout his career. He can't outright by a major league baseball team himself, so he has kind of a What Silent partner that kind of front him the money, But he's the face. He's the guy that is making all the decisions. And it's something that We really haven't seen too much. And North American pro sports. We've seen plenty become G m's even presidents. And I guess that might be Derek Jeter's technical title, but two Be The owner. Of a team like the true owner, not nine. Justin Timberlake buying Air Peyton Manning's wife, buying shares of the Memphis Grizzlies. Like it's his team. And then they promptly had a fire sale. After he took over. We thought, okay, same old Marlins. Quietly. They have become one of the more Progressive Four thinking which I guess are It basically means the same thing. Progressive four thinking. Competent. Organizations in baseball.

"K away NEWS RADIO COLORADO Rockies. Baseball is coming up in one hour, but first we sit down with the biggest names in baseball. This's Rocky's Q and a no. Forgive everybody. Jack Corrigan, Welcome to another edition of Rocky's Q and A And Today we get a chance to visit with long time Big leaguer and very happy that he's wearing Rocky's purple for the first time in his career outfielder designated hitter Matt Kim. Matt. We will certainly talk about your success here at Coors Field, but I wanted to back up first of all and and go through the process for you. Getting to Denver. If my story is accurate, there was some conversation last fall and winter and did that lay the groundwork for the opportunity to finally come through. I guess you could say that it was some. There's some groundwork Lay. We had a nice conversation during the winter meetings. I think went well, but I don't think it all added up at the time, and it wasn't it wasn't the right time. But, um Time. Time only only could tell. And and I'm here in Colorado right now. So it all worked out for everybody. Yeah, I thought one of the great things after you signed the contract with the ballclub, Matt was the Fact, you said all of a sudden 35 is considered old. I never thought 35 years old. I love that Come and give us a little low background on that. I think there's just like this this thing going around that when you get over 30 that you You know your your talents get a little bit more diminishing and not as sharp. A cz usually are. You get older, but I think in baseball You know, the mind is a strong thing, And when you get older, you know your mind for me is stronger. I know what I have to do to to prepare and to have success on the field. And there's a lot not a lot of knowledge in this brain that I could give to a lot of young guys that could help them like it was. Me going up, you know, with with Juan Pierre and Marlon Anderson and Torii Hunter and some of these guys who dropped knowledge on me. When they were old or so it helped me a lot become a better ball player. You know, that's one of the great things about this sport, and I know it. It probably is part of the the drive. The motivation for you to Ah, to keep on playing for is long as you can, because the game is is ever evolving eye. Is there ever a time that that you stop learning in this game? I don't think so. I think it just keeps on moving, doesn't it? I learned something. Every single day about the game of baseball. You know everything, you know, stuff changes. You know some things that work for you when you were younger. Don't work for you When you're older, you know, you have to switch it up and you know a lot of these young guys. They know a lot about the game of baseball, and I'm still learning till this day, so Baseball's fun is something that I've always enjoyed doing, and I'm definitely going to do it as long as I is, I can. My body will let me do it because this is something that I love to do. Let's talk about the obvious adjustment as you said, 35. It's certainly not old in society in general, and it doesn't have to be in baseball. But at the same time for a veteran player like yourself, you know the body doesn't recover quite is quickly and there might be other elements. How have things changed for you? If it all met? Maybe the heavens how may things have changed for you in terms of Both the physical preparation and then things like asleep and died in in all of that to stay at the top. If you will, a lot of you know now, when I was younger, I could just come to the field Go hit. Stretch and get ready for the game. Now is that a lot a lot more preparation, You know, a lot more maintenance stuff, You know, hot tub kowtow, no massages, stretching and different kinds of things that we do in a way room just to keep everything loose in And going a cz Muchas he can sow is actually you have to do a lot more. You've got to get to the field a lot earlier and you have to do a lot more to prepare for the game. And then on the mental side, not to say that there wasn't scattering reports and preparation and ah teams making defence of adjustments based on a player's capabilities at the plate, But We have all this information now. Is that something that was harder for you to get used to? Or was it something that you embraced in terms of of the video study the analytics, all those things that are a part of baseball Now, I mean, there's there's a lot of things that that that you could definitely use. I can help you a lot more video. You know, numbers in certain counts, and and different things with that you have with all these papers that can definitely help you, You know, win some ballgames. You know, Defensive alignments and things like that some stuff. I don't You know, I don't necessarily Believe in but a lot of the stuff I believe in and and some of that stuff can definitely help you win some ballgames. For Ah, player like yourself, and I wanted to follow up on your your comment right there. All of that outside preparation helps, But they're probably still isn't nothing better than The experience of being in certain situations of facing a hitter and remembering. I know when I worked for the Indians and would visit with Albert Belle all the time and and Albert would would have that ability, Teo, You know, I could almost say Well, you know game against the Orioles three weeks ago, and he could take me through it at bat. The pitches locations all of that. Is that the kind of player you've been and you use that experience? In addition to all the new elements now, Definitely definitely, you know, want one thing that Ah, Jim, that that That Davey Lopes gave me at a young age. You help me take my career to a different level was is that you have all the ability in the world. You know, you're really athletic, but you can't always you can always No focus on the athleticism. You know, Sometimes you have to be a student of the game is like I need you to be a better student of the game and pay attention. It was going on in certain counsel in certain innings and watch what the pictures are knowing and You know, pick up on different keys, so when you can steal bases, and when you can't that really took me to help me. Help me take my game to another level, and it's it's been working ever since. We're visiting with.

I didn't get out of here till a little bit late last night, get home, sit down and having a little bite to eat, and it's between periods. It's between the second and third. So In the meantime, I pull open Twitter and I'm reading your tweets and everything that you were saying about Du Bois during the show last night was manifesting itself on the ice. But But then things changed. So just go ahead and give us your thoughts on that. Yeah, you know, like when we talked yesterday. Um, you know, we talked about Dubois and Ah, I believe it means the even the comparison I did on Twitter as well with Leon drives idol who is the superstar might win the heart trophy this year. Probably go in the heart trophy this year for the um Evanston Oilers. And, you know, people would immediately especially in Canada would just immediately jump all over your village. I can't compare. You know Pierre Luc Dubois outta that guy. And, you know, maybe not. Maybe it's not fair, but loopy blot is Big, strong sentiment right And he's young, a talented and he's got a lot of untapped potential. We can't do whatever you. We really can't because we're all in the same production studio don't curse, but. Yeah, don't curse do whatever you by the way after yesterday's incident where I got fed up with Chris cody's inability to get a label maker and put numbers on these. I took a sharp to the board yesterday directly to the board. And I just drew in these numbers. So hopefully, what happened at around the world and that segment sort of falling apart because I was bad won't ever happen. Again, we go to Tyler who's got a question for us. Hey, guys longtime fan. I just wanted to know what your walkup song would be like in baseball. What would yours be Tyler who still there? Yeah. I'd want. I'll talking about this with my co workers, I want like something like threatening like you. You don't wanna mess with this guy. So I'd say like raining blood by slayer. How many co workers did you talk about this? Only two who what were their names. Sam and Matthew what was SAM's? Ooh. Sands was the man what was despicable heroes. I think and Matthews. I don't the guy. He's not really much of a music fan. Really? He probably would have said something like he's a Johnny cash fan. So probably something like that. Are these guys your friends or just co workers just co workers? I really hate them. Oh. Sorry. Didn't retain any found out this way. She. Yeah. I really don't care about them. All right. Tyler to to answer your question. I we've been ask question several times, I think during the courses history and my answer turn did. I didn't expect them to. Well. I kinda knew that he wasn't crazy about salmon Matt because he didn't remember their answers or didn't care to remember. The big red flag for me. My song would be Frank saloons four from over who. Okay. Your song. It has to be something fun. I don't know. I feel like I'd be that guy that changes the song like three or four like every about. I have a different song. Yeah. Because I don't have a song. That's like my favorite song that I'd listen to every time. I'd probably just do whatever is like current at the time. And I'd like rotate it do you still remember the two thousand three four tomorrow Len's betting songs because those are sort of ingrained? I mean, I remember one peers womp here would get always lead off the bottom of the first with we ready. We ready or to you ever. So. Yeah, I I didn't know who sang it until a couple of weeks ago that that that commercial where the football players so dope. I love that commercial. And I always think about one here whenever I hear that song. I'm incapable of not thinking of Juan Pierre ROY. What would your walk up song be wherever I robot Metallica? I that's a good one. There's a weird like grassroots campaign again Metallica to do the next halftime show. I know I know because you're firmly entrenched in team. Pit bull. Right. Yeah. I mean, I someone that is fun Metallica. I mean, no offense Metallica. Have you seen the Super Bowl committees? New commercial? I have it. Yeah..

"I played baseball for the university of Miami, brilliant, brilliant, minds sports mind, he said, he made the case for Andrew Johns. Why is Andrew he he brought up inter Jones. Derek Jeter and their stats are almost identical. Italy, the home run has been Sammy Sosa gotten like, okay? So there's a voting block of motion say this voting block of writers that people who vote will know who are said fast that people who use PD should still be included. So they account for a lot of very bonds vote totals are a lot of semi's Sosas. But not so. Yes, those guys, but even for those guys you're seeing people who are not that not that entire voting block. Like Sosa got way less votes this year that then then he should have like say thirty percent of the right? Ters vote for guys on a PD basis. So says stoneleigh getting you know, sixty percent of those guys, but Sosas got Sosa, although he's my favorite Sammy Sosa swell. Huge amount of home runs hits more than sixty home runs. Three times. Never Ledley didn't leave the league in home runs wire McGuire and gone. But it's nuts to think that you know, it's unthinkable that two decades ago guy would hit that many home runs in season. And not even be included. That's a brilliant with you make that the homerun itself has been developed. So if you have used to be back in the day, if you hit four or five hundred home runs, you're in totally we're in they would look the other way at a two seventy batting average. The crazy thing is now if you look the whole batting average on the whole in the league has gone way down. So people are saying to themselves to ninety two lifetime hitter. But to ninety two like the news when it would be great today. So fine ac- certain guys like how much like Lance Berkman and one peer who came up who can one year. Other great Jay Z lyric. Here used to run base like Juan Pierre run base. I hadn't snare. I was I was listening to the beastie boys boys with my son..

"Where do we stand on this front right here, sir? Okay. So the top four got in all got the seventy five percent this year, the next five Curt Schilling Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens. Larry Walker Omar Vizquel who next deserves to get in the baseball hall of fame. We'll start at the bottom Roger Clemens. Eight percent pro Larry Walker eleven percent. Omar Vizquel thirteen percent, Curt Schilling. Thirty two percent on Barry Bonds, thirty seven percents. I'm an bonds was stick them when he came up with the Pittsburgh Pirates dynamite. Who also a stick them as a rookie McGuire. Correct. But he's off the ballot now. So is Rick and kill Jason bay. Freddy Garcia, Jon garland, Travis Hafner, Ted Lilly. Derek Lowe Darren Oliver, Juan Pierre Vernon wells Kevin youkilis Placido Polanco. Roy owes Walt Miguel Tejada Lance Berkman Michael young because they also didn't they didn't reach the five percent threshold. So there. Good player there off the ballot there. All right. Let's sneak in some phone calls here before Rashad Jennings joins us then weird. Al yankovic will join us. Then Joe Torry will join us. And that is not a statement. I made an IRA need. All that is exactly our guest list and with thrilled about it. It's three guys and everyone in my kitchen. Okay. Let's go. Let's go to our buddy. Allen Dallas what's up Albert? How you been? Richard. How are you? Listen. Longtime longtime Wadsworth was yesterday. And this guy Tom from Idaho. They hit it spot on. I these are subjective. Play calls. Technology has made refereeing worse hasn't made a better. There's a penalty on every play this thirty eight thousand four hundred plays in a year. If you do one fifty times sixteen times sixteen making subjective play calls at the line at here at all these other places, I understand in the moment, you see the play happens. You get mad about it. But. Dilute the game I mistake. This is part of sports is part of competing. We can all correct everything in this world where everything needs to be fixed. Everything needs to be perfect. It's not perfect. That's why we play the game. Well, I I would love though in the twenty first century though, Allen, thanks for the call as always. I would just love in the twenty first century to use technology to create the gaff. Corrector? Wouldn't you love to have Armando Galarraga have the perfect game rather than well? You know what Jim Joyce blue that? Call. I mean, and I know it wasn't the difference between the Tigers going to the World Series or not. But wouldn't you want to have the ability to correct that? So Armando Galarraga has a perfect game. But history kind of reflects that anyway, but Don, but that's not the that. That's not it's it's the perfect game. It's not in the record books that should be. And instead, Jim Joyce. Who has you know was was brought to tears over it when he saw it, let's fix it. We only know Ragas name because this happened to him. If he does get that perfect game. He's just another guy on that list. Would you have a perfect game? Or you're the guy who's known for having umpires awful blown call prevent you from having it. I get what you're saying. But we were will remember this dude forever. Well, and also the Red Sox were known as a franchise that never one. Wouldn't you rather be known as a franchise with four wins over the last twenty years now, everyone hates us. Hey, did you before look Don Denkinger if that call was made now instead of one thousand nine hundred five that call in two thousand nineteen replay with corrected. And we play on is got to be something. That makes sure that something like that never happens again. It's a terrible look. So that's why you create something. It's not perfect. But it's something it's better than nothing. That's what I think. Let's go to Darren in California. What's up Darren you're here in the rich Eisen show? Oh, yeah. You got a proposal to do. Hannity's. Point out that that would not to change the NFC championship game. It could be your penalty is because the lambs would've review mask on. Right. That would have resulted in probably around touchdown tie game. A Rams four point lead. Right. Which means that the saints needed to score a touchdown at the end as opposed to just take the clock. All the way down to the to the end and kick a field goal to win. Correct. Darren I mean, and thanks again for the call. I mean, oh, Andrew Whitworth pointed that out yesterday that his numb that their numbers of teams numbers. I engulf from the one this year has been phenomenal. Again. And you know, we we've been through this before. Let's go ahead and review at all flag. Challenge flag comes out. What each challenging Sean McVay challenging that. There should have been a face mask on that. Play you missed it. Okay. Let's go into the booth first down. What's the problem with that? Is there a problem with that? Booth buzzes down. No, call turns into a call for for score. I mean for for for new for New Orleans, everybody anybody of a problem with that. It's the it's the instance the unintended consequence as Stephen Jones pointed out that somebody throws a challenge flag. And now all of a sudden everybody in a span of two minutes has got to figure out what's clear and obvious. I'd rather have that problem in the one that we've been discussing over the last seventy two hours. Really really would Nathan here in Los Angeles. What's up Nathan how you been? Hey, I'm doing well. I'm gonna find this in in a different way. I think the penalties that need to be reviewed our penalties where it's clearly an easily definable like line-item bullet-point criteria type away. What constitutes the penalty? So deep is pretty easy. You know, do they did the defendant arrived before the ball the defender in face scarred? The defender, you know, impede the reprieve receivers ability did they establish the definitive establish his own his own right to that bowl. Legitimately defenseless receivers. Another big one you already have definitions on that. No. I know. And then right? And then there's another one Nathan to you know. Where a holding penalty and Rashad Jennings just walked on the set and so called back again. Nathan, thank you. The holding penalty. So that's the ultimate gray area. Right. Offensive holding. You can call that on every play just the same way that you can call foul and every play in the NBA to right. I think so it's the the the the the hand goes into the breastplate and the pulled out. That's got to be clear and obvious or the around the shoulder pulling the hug, right? Yes. When you tackle a guy. That's telling you like there's ways to to to codify it, and it, and there will be an unintended consequence that we're not thinking of. But it's better than the consequence of the entire country seeing that and it's better than the consequence of people who we've met Wendell Pierce before. Okay. Who is on the show yesterday, the actor from the wire and Trey and all these other great movies and television shows that he's been in. We've met him before. Passionate guy, but a a normal regular human being correct at times it sounded like and I say it again with the ultimate respect it sounded yesterday. The conspiracy theories us throwing out to try and fill the void of the bizarre. Consequence of that not being called sound like you had like a tin foil hat on his head at times. But some of the stuff that you're not so fans are just so worked up some are gonna turn it off which you don't want. I still profit or say it will be a record audience for the Super Bowl. But. I'd rather have the unintended consequence. Then this again, we gotta figure something out to make sure this doesn't happen again. And God forbid it does happen. Again. We find out one of these guys. "We've got a guard for the Miami Dolphins today to eleven eastern as we continue our oral history on the greatest ending though. Miami Dolphins game we've ever seen. Greg Cody is dying to talk about it is the maker of Juan Pierre for the hall of fame, and he just got done arguing Adam gates for coach of the year as the coach of the Miami Dolphins and judging by his voice, he might literally be dying to talk about it. That's right. His voice is a mess. Jeremy shop is going to join us at eleven thirty to talk about Buster Douglas and the thirty for thirty on Buster Douglas. I talked to Buster Douglas yesterday on a highly questionable. We tape. Something has an aired yet. And it it was funny because I was reading to him from a profile of Sports Illustrated. How he was someone who didn't like confrontation. How Buster Douglas was a fighter but just sort of avoided if his if his parents were arguing he'd van? Wish if people as an adult raised their voice, all of a sudden he would move away. And so I'm reading that back to him. And he's like then who wrote that bleep. All man. Oh, I mean who's thinking about fudge this early in the morning. That's a fine. A big one. I don't know how much but something. Yeah. I knew it had to happen. Eventually, right. And let's just want. Let's let's examine this for a second. My apologies. My apologies. That was an obvious mistake. And I knew that was going to happen at some point in the last fifteen years for as often as I've been using bleeps where I use curses. And where us curses off air is often. So my apologies for what just happened there? But I want to examine what's happening with me in general because twice yesterday. Mike fooled by the internet twice. It wasn't just the Chris Collins word slide in bar. There was a World Cup bar. And I thought that a crowd had actually I thought that they had orchestrated that too. I listen to me, man. Listen to me. We're here for you. Okay. I'm falling apart. Okay. Clearly, I'm falling apart. And this is the way that it has to end it has to end with me falling apart and your mocking me as I descended into senility. I've been doing it to Greg Cody for ten years. Of course, you're going to be able to do it to make as I now entered the Cody slalom of my journalism career. Yeah. You really have other way. I just didn't anticipate happening so soon and so fast and so fast. But then we need you to hang on for another month, your, buddy. But no. But listen hear listen to what happened to me yesterday that you guys didn't even notice the whole Janet Jackson think CBS five hundred and fifty thousand dollars. We'll settle for a half million in the fine bucket. Okay. Well, I think I got dumped it it not. I mean. Yeah. I. So fine. Is it though is that a fine for me half-million record-setting fine. The second mistake that I made yesterday was I read a quote that was there is no place for violence in the NFL Kareem hunt should be banned. And I said it was from Ray Lewis, and it was and I looked at up like I went to verify to make sure that it was true. But I got who by second place that it was. So I found it on the internet. I was actually verify myself. But I got fooled by both of them. Both of the places that I've found is moving fast. It is man it is. And these these are grievous mistakes, there agreed just mistakes, and all we can hope for is that our device of when we're bad. We make fun of it. And then you forgive us keeps working because it keeps getting worse. I mean, it's hard to turn fifty Saturday. It's hard to make fun of something the audience couldn't here because it's one of those words you can't say so try to not make those mistakes your birthday Sunday. That's a fun. So Jeremy shop is going to join us to talk about Buster Douglas. He's Dr John and he's been celebrated on birthday decade. We're celebrating my birthday Saturday at midnight. So Jeremy shop the Buster Douglas stories to gods. What could happen today to be that what can happen today that you will?.

You know, from the, oh, you know, Ozzy Osbourne that kind of Osborne, the one that's full full of drugs. I don't care what he's full of. He's one hell of a musician. I've always been an Ozzy fan. I've also been well Little Richard will be eighty six on Wednesday. They tell me that. Did you see what assessor Ozzy Osbourne almost died from a manicure? Well, I'm not surprised I read his autobiography, he's got no immune system. He should have been dead forty years ago from what I he wrote in as well. I like Ozzy and Harriet better. Yeah. Yeah. Well, they're not around anymore. And neither is Rick or his brother, David. But oh, oh, black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne. I think David still around. I mean, I think David is still around. He was one of the award givers Little Richard no nano care about Little Richard talk about David. I'm talking about. David nelson. Okay. Well, you might David Nelson. You might not care about Little, Richard. But if it wasn't for him, there'd be no rock and roll hill. He was high solves last concert Detroit. Little Richard Lamm concert. I didn't see little Richard's. I said before he died in a plane crash. Oh, oh, Rick Nelson. Yeah. Yeah. That was a New Year's Eve eighty five but the lions play like well the offense play like they'd been dead since eighty five. Oh, yeah. I did for some reason. I didn't know maybe I did. And I know time gauge is going to be oh, by the way instead of that board. You don't think they should have site. Now, don't laugh the the Tigers. Go ahead. They should have signed Bartolo Cologne. The man is sixty is your age. I don't can't see sixty his average was five point seventy eight and Moore's was six point seventy eight. But you're talking about a guy twenty nine years of age. You're not signing guy to help you sign a guy that you can trade you get prospects for him. You can get a job strap for bar total Cologne now. Yeah, I know, but don't they got rid of Wilson? And and and and mechanical McCann's, I I was kinda surprised got rid of him. But even more surprised they got rid of. And what are they gonna? What are they gonna do this year win fifty four games that I think they should go? Try to see if they can get a hold of. And I'm gonna ask palm about the station. They get a hold of Billy Hamilton. That would be an interesting signing the guy can run he can play the outfield, but he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Yeah. I know. I mean once we get three home runs a year. You know, he's this generation's Juan Pierre remember one PM. I remember a little one beer. Yeah. He just generations one peer great outfielder. No, arm and everything I think he's got better on the question. Of course, my my my sister, Karen's got a better than one peer on peer did not have a good arm at all. Yeah. Same thing. Same thing with Billy Hamilton. And he's. No, I think Juan Pierre was close to three hundred hitter. I think Billy Hamilton's around to sixty eight. Not take your way off when you say to sixty Billy Hamilton, maybe two fifty or something like that. Three homers a year. But he can he can hunt him down out there in the old guard, and Kenny, and I'll I'll I'll talk I'll talk to Tom gage and ask him most things six his lifetime ban. And I'm right as lifetime. Batting averages to forty five to forty five forty five but he can run not the league. I think he led the National League in stolen bases once or twice. I believe he's got about four hundred stolen bases. Here's here's his deal. He's been the league since two thousand fourteen he came up two thousand thirteen in his best year in thirteenth stolen, bases in one thousand nine hundred bats and he had three sixty eight and he's been going downhill ever two fifty two twenty six to sixty to forty seven to thirty six last year. But his steals thirteen twenty two. Thirteen minutes guy can fly. He's. Yeah. Six two thousand fourteen fifty seven in two thousand fifteen fifty eight and two thousand sixteen and fifty nine and two thousand seventeen and he slipped back to thirty four last year. Yeah. He's a little guy. What's the six one and one fifty five or something like that six one is not little? Yeah. He's one. Well, one fifty five is well, he's one sixty court. Now, this is according to the also got Bartolo Cologne is two eighty Bartolo called at least one hundred points one hundred pounds. Ron Bartolo Colonus to eighty with one one foot on the scale. I'm meeting three twenty five. But yeah. I'll call back at six at half-time gauge what he thinks about picking up by their either Billy Hamilton their Bartolo. You got it. Well, thank you very much. Cowboys always. And let's take another call from. Oh God Joey in Dearborn. You don't have to your joy. He I I got say one thing when it comes to the NFL off SOX announcers, there's could be open and Thom Brennaman and under sixty feet of crap. And then there's everybody else. I gotta say I love that announce team. What what are you? Thanks. I do. I just wish he'd quit sing football. Every other word those guys. Everybody knows that I liked what I liked back in the day is the big coach schmo Clin. John men never would say the word football. You don't have to everybody knows. It's a football game. You don't follow football. You fumble the ball. And I just don't like that. Another thing you said, and I agree. I think they're both. Excellent. We're live in Detroit. Michigan or yes. Where else would you try? He said twice Detroit. Michigan. Where else would Detroit being Ohio? The Detroit in Texas. No, not not as an NFL team. No here. Either. Exactly. But don't you. Right. I think they do a good job. Yeah. He's he's a Homer. I will admit that. He is a little bit of a Homer for the lions. But I love them for it out. I think a lot better than and Troy Aikman. I don't mind Joe buck for baseball. But I cannot stand him for football isolate you didn't like me the way I think he's better now than it used to be. Yeah. He's rated number. We're gonna have is other partner from baseball on another three weeks. About. He'll he'll do a good job. And I like, John I think Troy Aikman is excellent. I like the way he says need to blow up the Dallas what he was wrong there. But I like the fact that he Senate even though. Dallas quarterback. I. A fire under work. Whatever. Did it? Sure did work. What's up? I think I've lost some sun. No, I think they're five and Olsen. And I think I think we're going to be a three seat because the bears off for the giants. Crazy game out. Yeah. I saw that Trubisky back next week or no. No official word official word because. L A winter division only because they're playing nobody playing in Chicago's cleanser division today. The clinton. Yeah. How can they? New Orleans is still got oh. Oh, I said. They didn't clinched the Tolkien's, but the division. Oh, I don't care about divisions. Don't mean anything's conference. That means everything and they're still half game ahead of. Of New Orleans nor better team. I don't see any way they can win with that. Brutal defense. I mean look better today because they're playing the lines with no weapons. Well, plus New Orleans has the tiebreaker and the Super Bowl is going to have to go through New Orleans C, then the Rams are gone. Yeah. But crazy crazy lost by the bears today. I think the bears him in the world's gonna win a Green Bay Minnesota. No, no. Of the plan the paths right now. I know they're losing. What's the score right now as we speak? Got it right here on nothing. And who's got the ball knowing knowing it's got the ball. Like. Twenty six. Yeah. Two minutes left. Second quarter. Probably still be ten nothing. Minnesota can't win the game outside. They've won one game outside. Since our coach took over. Right shoulder. Date myself now a little bit. The game that they went outside keep it was just talking about it today on TV. Wow. And then somebody suggests in the paper that the lines trait Stanford and pick up Bridgewater. Oh my God. These economic plan those people famous Stafford's the hall of fame quarterback, but I the people that just call in. And he's got a chance for his numbers are better than most hall of fame quarterbacks. No, no. It's not ridiculous stuff. But you could be a hall of fame quarterback. But with the way the NFL's going now the numbers that he's going to finish life. I don't think are going to be necessarily spectacular ten years down the road the way the game is today. You could be right. Yeah. Yeah. So that's still up in the air. But I'll tell you one hundred twenty one consecutive game is durable. They hit him everything was except the kitchen sink, and he just bounces back for more. So I give them credit for their you can't make chicken salad out of chicken manure, right? Right. Has gotten a lot worse, which is sad considering how much money it's been according to it. And I know I'm getting to like an age old topic here. But it's. I don't know because they lost today. You're gonna get the same reaction. And who's always a lot of it's not there. I agree. Ornate aligns officially they're not gonna have a winning season. Now, so rough perceive coach Patricia. I think they might be eliminated from playoffs especially now. I know when they put up the graphic during the game today there were still in the that's why it's my favorite when it's December. And they put up a picture. Very in Detroit. Four and seven. Well, as far as that goes the Zona next week and then go to buffalo the week after they come home to play Minnesota, then go on the road at Green Bay in the year. Green. Green Bay is gonna make a coaching change at Kaiser will be starting that game at the end of the year Rogers because browsers they'll probably rest Rogers knowing that their their playoff chances are. We're guessing you may be right. Who knows those are all very winnable games. I hate to say it, you're right. Except maybe Minnesota, but southerner Diana's don't wanna be do not to see go seventy nine again on again. Well. And people raving about sue let me tell you something L A last year with Donna, Donna, even though he's playing he's just riding on the coattails of Donald. Donald John eating. Well, I mean, they won the Super Bowl this year. It's not going to be because there all. Because of defense on darnold. Donald these are best defensive lineman in the league. Defensive player should be. Last years would with the last few years has been SU never wanna play off game a bad apple in the clubhouse another band penalties horse collar. I don't know if somebody's I don't know about that. Give them a video a video tribute and have all the highlights kicking players. That'd be good for him. I don't think the fans would appreciated that they were booing him. You don't know that you have no idea. What that was. I hope it was booze. It should be boost line fans. Oh, that's what the same thing. They did was they said today there were boring. They don't realize that soon boost on the same thing. Yeah. Well, it's like the mister burns think from the Simpsons like are you saying you're saying, you're? Well, I'll see you next week. Yup. All right. Take care, man. From one to another. "Vs sports leader, welcome back everyone. But a great shows a lot of baseball talk today a lot of baseball callers as well. People debating about this upcoming hall of fame ballot. I'm not impressed at all. We got one guy who will be a locked short definitely deserves a spot in Cooperstown. As Mariano Rivera six hundred and fifty two saves two point two one ERA. He will be one of those guys that gets the minimum approval rating of seventy five percent. I'm hoping ROY halladay gets in as well two time Cy Young winner. I think he's a maybe not a shoe in like Mariano Rivera Todd Helton Andy Pettitte also on the list for the first time if good Martinez eighteen years in the league with the Mariners good shoddy received seventy percent approval last year, he needs seventy five this is tenth year on. The ballot. So you know, it's a big one for him. And then you see a lot of these guys right here. They might be one in done that means they may not even get the five percent approval, and they'll be done as far as being on the ballot. Rick in Kiel Jason bay, Jon garland, Travis Hafner, Ted Lilly. Derek Lowe Darren Oliver, Juan Pierre placebo Polanco, I can go on. I'm not trying to serve up eight raid. I'm just telling you what I think about the whole situation, especially when we got guys like Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens both failed to get even sixty percent approval last year. We'll be talking about that a little bit more, Mike Mussina, Curt Schilling. I think they should be in Manny Ramirez as well. But we want to get to something called juniors. Jots tell us about this Mr. f p Santangelo junior. Well, I just think about some things sometimes and just gotta write it down. And you know, I'll put it down either my cell phone in my diary on a piece of paper thrown in a binder and just bring it up for this saying. Meant this weekly segment juniors jot. So for the first juniors jots, I've got a question for you. Okay. And and I usually throw it out to the host who's ever hosting. Sure. Why do NBA teams not really make sense with their names and their location? I mean, there's no lakes in LA. There's no kings in Sacramento, and there's no rafters in Toronto. I know about the Lakers situation the Lakers moved from Minnesota. But besides that, where's the continuity? Well,.
"juan pierre" Discussed on KNBR The Sports Leader
"Leader. Welcome back. Everyone. Henry Wofford, you know, the number here. Eight eight can be are we're going to swing over to baseball. And we got some hot topics to discuss I am basically not in a good mood right now when it comes to talk and baseball because I took a look at this upcoming hall of fame voting ballot. And I'm not impressed at all. The only thing I get from this ballot. Is it's time for all the writers who vote to drop their attitude and start voting for some guys who played during the PD era. Okay. Now, I know what they say. Oh, well, if they gotta clean reputation will vote for them. But there's some guys we just don't know yet. Look man, look, and I'm seeing man because I'm tired of talking about this. It's so watered down right now if you gave me a round trip full. Early paid all expenses to go. Visit Cooperstown I would say, no, thank you. I have no desire to walk into that hall of fame. Without so many key players who should be in there beginning with Pete Rose. Okay. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Curt Schilling Mike Mussina, and I can keep going on with this list. Manny ramirez. But I'm gonna tell you what happened last year and a case you're not familiar with how things work out each player in order to be inducted. They gotta get approval by seventy five percent of the electors people who are voting last year Chipper Jones first year on the ballot was voted in ninety seven point two percent. Vladimir Guerrero second year on the ballot ninety two point nine percent. Jim Thome me first year on the ballot. Eighty nine point eight percent and Trevor Hoffman his third year on the ballot approval was seventy nine point nine percent. Great players don't have an issue with it. All right. This year new on the list. We only have one player who's Sherlock. That's Mariano Rivera six hundred and fifty two saves two point two one ERA over eleven hundred K's. This guy is a lock after that keep your fingers crossed for the two time Cy Young winner, ROY halladay. He's a maybe I think he's got a good shot if not this year possibly next year. He'll go in not sure about anyone else for this year's class. Todd Helton Andy Pettitte, they'll get a decent approval rating. But I don't think they're getting an Edgar Martinez who has. Back on the ballot. And keep in mind. You get ten years to be on that valid before the veterans. This is his tenth year. Now he played for the Mariners eighteen years. Great hitter. Has a good shot of getting in last year. He received seventy percent of the vote. So if he gets five more percentage votes, he will be in. There's a lot of guys they'd call one and done. And that's not a good thing. It's not like college basketball one in down where it's a good thing for voting for baseball. It's a bad thing. They're saying look you could be on that ballot. If you get less than five percent, you're done. You're not coming back on the ballot. Again, you need more than a five percent percent approval. Here are some of the names, which I just find embarrassing. Rick and kill is on the hall of fame. Ballot. Rick and kill Jason bay. John garland, and I'm not saying look these guys are laughable horrible players. I'm saying they're not hall of famers, Travis Hafner, Ted Lilly. Derek Lowe Darren Oliver, Juan Pierre placebo Longo. All right. There's no way in the world those guys belong in the hall of fame. Well, why are they on the list because we've been passing on guys? How about Barry Bonds the home run king last year was a sixth year on the ballot? He got fifty six point four percent approval. He's not even close to the seventy five percent, folks. This is a seven time MVP, the writers don't know what the hell they're doing. They should not be voting. Oh, how about Mr. Roger Clements last year sixty year on the ballot fifty seven point three percent? These guys still have a long way to go. Curt Schilling fifty one point two percent. You wanna know a little bit about Curt Schilling two hundred sixteen wins three point four six ERA. Twenty two saves more than three thousand.

"Some sports got a hot hot day going on tonight. And it's going to be Mr. Bip Roberts. Joining us a little bit later talking some baseball because I was. I was looking at some names on the ballot this year. And I'm seeing embarrassing, and I'm not trying to rip any guy and his entire career. What I'm saying is embarrassing. The fact that certain people are on a list, and they're calling them a candidate for the hall of fame for the hall of fame. I mean, I'm not saying you're a horrible player. I realized how long it takes the play on the elite level of a very difficult game to play. But this list that we're going to talk about a little bit later in the show of guys that could go into the hall of fame. It's a list that makes you say are you serious? Are you serious that guy is really on the list? And this is what was bound to happen. When you're keeping so many qualified guys off the list, or maybe they are returning players on the list. But you know, they're not getting a true look. Because they played during the PD era. We were just talking about moments ago guys like Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, you really want to keep them off the list, you really want to keep them out of Cooperstown. Roger clements. It's getting ridiculous, folks. Sammy Sosa, you know, I'm not a guy who's gonna keep seeing Sammy should be in. Sammy hit a ton of home runs. Hit over six hundred home runs. But at the same time his overall batting average was two seventy three and prior to the PD era Sammy he struggled to hit two fifty multiple years. So he's definitely a guy who benefited big time. But there's some other guys. I'm just saying a no brainer on this year's list. The new guys on the list. There's only one lock and that's going to be Moriano Rivera. I'm going to say some names that's gonna make you say there's no way he's on the hall of fame. Ballot. Rick and kill. Are you kidding me? Rick. Rick is not getting five percent of the vote. And now, you know, if you don't get at least five percent of the vote each electoral has ten people that they can Mark on their list. If you don't qualify. Five percent, you're one and done. They take you off the list period. Even if it's your fifth or sixth year. Maybe you started off getting twenty percent, and you're dropping into climbing. Once you get less than five percent. You're taking off the list. Rick and kill say goodbye. You're not going to the hall Jason bay. John Garlan Travis Hafner, Ted Lilly. Derek Lowe Darren Oliver, Juan Pierre placebo Polanco. I mean, really these guys are not going to the hall. There's some other decent players on here. Kevin nucleus, burnin Wales Miguel Tejada, I'm not saying once again, they're horrible. But because they're far from it. Very good players. But when we're. Talking about the hall of fame, and you start thinking about guys who aren't in there yet very bonds Roger Clemens, Mike, new sina, Curt Schilling Manny Ramirez. Sammy Sosa Larry Walker. Omar Vizquel former shortstop with Indians thirty seven percent is I go around last year going to get more this year. There's just a lot to talk about is it time to switch things up. Do you have a problem with writers having so much say or who's going into the hall should players? Former players current hall of famers have more say into it. We're going to discuss it. And we're going to bring him bit robbers, by the way, bed Roberts is a guy career batting average. And I'll look it up one more time to ninety eight almost three hundred almost three hundred. I wanna get bits take on a, you know, some of these names he sees on the list and say what's wrong with baseball. Do we need to drop and this brick wall and say let guys during the PD era get in. It's definitely a hot topic. Also, Steph curry out at least three more games. He's already missed six games. So that means he's going to miss at least nine. Games. And with Steph out are the warriors able to hold this thing together. What are they going to have to do to get back on the winning track?.

Still doing very well. How about that the Clapper? Stugatz. I guarantee you wanna get the sales on this thing. They're going to be through the roof through the roof sets Clapper's here. I'm wait for it. And getting Clapper clear, you going to contribute anything to the segment or you just. Invented this Clamper segment, by the way, it was me who brought it up. You're welcome. But Clapper libertas show with this Stu gods on ESPN radio. If you're just joining us. We were alarmed in the first hour the local hour at Greg Cody of the Miami Herald who's in with us every Tuesday about how little he knows about Eddie Murphy's career. He said of the movie with our son Arsenio hall. He called that made in America. He called another one of these movies. The nutty professor the klumps he called it the fat, professor. And then he he named the party all the time song something about dancing is what he said what other Eddie Murphy information. Can you give can you give us? I would like a list of all the things about Eddie Murphy that you know, I enjoyed them as a stand up comic. You know, the name of either one of his specials. No, they couldn't have been that special. But you enjoyed it. Yeah. He was good. You know, he he wasn't Chris rock or George Carlin. But I thought he was a good stand up was actually not in my opinion. To have my own opinion. Opinions really bed. You spend it during the break arguing the merits of Juan Pierre for the hall of fame over Adrian BELTRAN. That's thing that just happened during now if I could explain myself because as usual, you misrepresent me, you should be a politician because everything you say about me feels like a negative ad. I didn't say one peer should be a hall of Famer..

"It's a hundred and forty years old played on the same size field saved for the height of the Mt. Is virtually the exact same game. And forget is like JD Martinez who don't bring a glove to the yard. But that's neither here nor there when it comes to a record about a playoff staff though for baseball. I gotta draw the line Rafael Devers had an incredible postseason. There have been guys in the modern era who have been young and had incredible postseasons, but they mean different things. So a couple of stats came out last night about Rafael Devers, I wanna hit on. He turns twenty two in five days October twenty fourth okay? Playoff RBI's, postseason RBI's and profession or in major league baseball before the age of twenty one Rafael Devers, now second all-time. He ties Miguel Cabrera for second all time and passes Mickey Mantle Mickey Mantle ten career RBI's before his twenty first birthday is twenty first birthday the thing that baffles me or before the age of twenty water. But this all must have been before the age of twenty two my apologies. Turns twenty to the twenty fourth so playoff RBI's before the age of twenty two Mickey Mantle with ten Denver's and Miguel Cabrera with twelve under Jones with fourteen now the Jones won while he only did it in a couple of postseasons. He was playing on some teams that went to the postseason every single season. So he had more opportunities. He was also playing in a in a postseason era where he had three rounds to do Miguel Cabrera to me a little bit more impressive because in two thousand and three when he got here. He was he was a young guy. Play with Jeff co nine and Dontrelle Willis and Juan Pierre only made that one playoff run. Now. I know he was traded a year and a half later to the Detroit Tigers, but he only had one big playoff run before his age twenty two season. So more impressive to be McGaw Cabrera put up those numbers as a twenty year old back in two thousand and three. Now, you wanna get really impressed Mickey Mantle this guy was only playing in World Series. There was no championships series. This guy would win win. The pennant go to the World Series and drive in runs. Dave ten RBI's before the age of twenty two. That's a pretty impressive note. The fact that the three guys who have passed it have played in the last twenty years. She told you everything you need to know about that Mickey Mantle stat, Dave. Yes, he had ten RBI at the age of twenty one at the age of twenty. Fifty four because he was injured when he was twenty two. So that's that's the number. I'm looking at here. David fifty four they didn't go to the World Series. Anyway, wouldn't matter. Right. Yeah. He didn't play right. He didn't Chris your your New York Giants were handled Vic words and the Cleveland Indians. That's what was going on. But in his age twenty one season. You're right there. That's what we're getting at here. So that's that's before the age of twenty two. These are those notes now for playoff home runs before the age of twenty two Bryce Harper with four Mickey Mantle with four Miguel Cabrera with four Andre Jones with four so all the guys you just heard on that list. Bryce Harper though has been hit his home runs with nobody on base. I guess though, Dave because he's not on the ten Rb Islas, but he is on the floor home run list before the age twenty two and then Rafael Devers now with three. So Rafael Devers by next season. If the Boston Red Sox make another push could solidify himself as one of the best young postseason players of all time. We'll have to take that with the modern era because clearly Mickey Mantle as a twenty one twenty two year old and this by the way, Mickey mantles been at the forefront of my mind. I got sick last weekend. I was out on Monday. Remember, Dave when I get sick. There's a movie I've been watching since I was a I guess it was my dad's showed it to me. It's the Billy crystal sixty one Barry pepper Thomas. Jane incredible movie, one of the best HBO made movies, in my opinion. One of the better baseball movies ever buried pepper played Dale Earnhardt senior in the Dale Earnhardt number three movies, dude..

"For what reason? It's weird. Like I well, because I just I grew up a Marlins fan, so I'm I'm stuck with them. Mm-hmm. You know what I mean? Like what's my choice? If I grew up a baseball fan and grew Marlins fan, stuck with him. I will say this this year has not been my most active moral watching your like, have them on, and passively walk by check in and see what's going on. But it's hard to watch a nine inning game just because you know, kind of their out of it and for the next couple of years, I mean, they're they're rebuilding or building or whatever it is that they want to call it. So they're not going to be in it. But this weekend, Jason fan, appreciation weekends? Yeah, I love a good fan of fireworks. No, I don't. Maybe they shirts DJ Khallid. No, DJ. Cal was opening act guess with tonight as Jason go. The tonight tonight is throwback Thursday. They're going to do what throwback bobbleheads as I mean. Well, as far as I can understand, it seems like they have a bunch of bobbleheads left over from previous bobblehead giveaways, and you go and you just get a model head totally random bobblehead. I, I could be misrepresenting that, but that's how I interpreted. What's going on. And I love that have like leftover ROY, halladay, no hitter against us bobbleheads. You can go and you can get a bobble head. I mean, I have a lot of bobble. Do you collect things? You don't seem like a collector, you collect things? Not really. No, not. I don't have like a stamp collection or so. I I, there's some things I have from my childhood, and a lot of them are probably like game giveaway thing. Yeah, I've not been able to throw away, but they're totally worthless. But they have such sentimental value at a giant bin full of basketball and baseball cards. At my dad's house, I have so much like just random Marlin like there was a year for whatever reason that the Moreland giveaway was miniature billboards, and it was like replicas of the billboards that were on the expressway, and I have like a Carlos though Gado miniature Marlins replica billboard, and it says like one eight, seven, seven Moreland or whatever the numbers on the bottom. And he's like swinging. And it has like the catchphrase whatever the ticket sales thing was that you're it was it's probably the strangest giveaway. I think we have a picture what a. Mini billboard giveaway would be like, how would you display it? It's so it's like a, it's like a hard plastic and it's like long hair drying out with your fingers, and we're on the radio, the super long Stacey still doing with yard. You're still drawing it has like a base, no one can see you. I don't know how to explain it. It's it's a hard plastic, miniature billboard withstand, but I just have so much crap like that that I feel like if I went today to throwback bobblehead day, I'd get a bobble head that I might already have. I used to love bobbleheads for whatever reason you want to know a sad day in my life. Not really. I'm gonna tell you anyways. Here's a sad day in my life. I collected after two thousand and three World Series championship bobbleheads. So it was like the players like Josh Beckett, Pudge Rodriguez Juan Pierre. I don't think that I got one Carnoustie on who my favorite for some reason, but it was all of them because we'll chant because of the chant now I just liked him Jeff. Conan, Mike law had all of them and they were holding like the little World Series trophy. And at the I feel like I got him for Christmas because they're kind of expensive h. Like probably close to forty bucks. So I had them like displayed on a bookshelf and I was moving the bookshelf because there was like a few meters something coming. So I had to for whatever reason I'm moving the bookshelf and I left him at the top of the bookshelf and there is just the massacre and they fell off the top of the bookshelf and they all died..

"You could say that i am if he wanted to sure sons like you're well you've been on the outfield arms beat this week it had a trade firmer speed and the trade reactions beat and the outfield arms beat it serves interesting combination of topics to cover this week i don't know for you want to get into that but you've pointed out that chris davis has no arm so christie it would know everybody understands chris davis doesn't have an armed this is a for the people no three things by chris avis they know that he is a lot like the other chris davis they know that he hits the crap out of the ball when he makes contact and i think they know that he doesn't habits throwing are now that's one of those things that may be fans of the teams with chris davis no better than fans of other teams who don't pay chris davis too much attention but his throwing arm has been weak for a while i've heard that he sustained a shoulder injury in college i believe it was that he just hasn't recovered from obviously not linked to his massive massive batting power so chris davis still strong except in the one way where he is trying to return the ball to the infield he currently has in the season of course is not over but we have fifteen this is the fifteenth year of of us singleseason data four arm ratings for both defensive runs saved and use the are open exonerating so they both have arm value measurements and they are a little bit different mostly the same of course there's good correlation and according to both of those measures chris davis is in the midst of what would be very easily be worse to throwing arm season in a decade and a half for an outfielder he is a i wouldn't even say edging he is beating the crap out of like 2013 juan pierre for the worst season on brief historical record chris davis he has one assists this season i've written a whole post but chris davis having four outfield assists before and i feel bad because this kind of piling on because i'm a big government about his like incredible power and good other skills but he rates as of.

"But this is a top10 strikeout guy again he wasn't last year do that's a fascinating one putting the two of them had a head to head against each other i have they kaneta there yeah y yeah you do i that's it's close they now did they both belong in the top twenty i think they're both i think pineda's borderline i think raises a little bit outside i want to see a little bit more on him on a see you next that on me knows next outings it oh it's the audio yeah elects its next week because that we're looking here and it says tuesday against san diego so again in another like you know week often probably the second worst offense to philadelphia right now so as great an all counts the same um are the best header over the past week best player elvis andreas huawei long been a um well i don't wanna say a big fan of face purposes but what he's doing this year is a lot different than what he's on the past him he's already mean the powers outstanding got seven home runs already scoring runs the top the lineup he's doing more basis what has changed in elvis andrews to make him suddenly viable all those years he was a top hundred pick he wasn't deserving of that he didn't have any power he wasn't aim for average and he hasn't stolen more than twenty seven bases since two thousand thirteen seems on his way right now yeah and it's it's kind of been a long time coming i thought he'd have the capability of getting into the teens and home runs that we were looking at a probably a fifteen to eighteen homer a career peak what he has done his studies severely decreased the groundball rate this is a guy who was an excrete extreme ground bowler who is trying to use his legs to eta to eek out those infield hits it was like the juan pierre mold way back in the day as we always remember but he took it from what was fifty six and fifty percent of 2013 in 2014 to forty seven forty eight and now forty five percent hard contact greatest increased right now this year he is performing at a careerhigh in that category is a little legitimate pop in his bat means in the right park for it.
