You know a lot of Georgia grads and whatnot. I mean, this has been such a drought in terms of like Georgia with all the talent around them and all the resources it's kind of crazy that they went this long. What do you think of when I don't want to put you in the shoes of somebody who grew up in Georgia because obviously it didn't. But for people who were there and how to see it, what goes through your mind, seeing how this kind of finished. Well, I did live there for 5 years out of college and one of my friends I made a shot of my here Jonathan ganz who worked at CNS I with me. I saw him here. We went to lunch. He's, you know, he's a super as die hard at Georgia fans. You can get. And the amount of painful heartbreaking losses he has endured over the years. Just since Kirby, smart's been there, frankly, with the second and 26. And the weird fake punt in the SEC championship game and whatnot. The SEC championship game this December that they thought they were going to win. It doesn't get any better for that fan base. And you could feel it in the stadium. I should have said this off the top. That stadium was 80% Georgia fans. You're so used to seeing lots of Alabama fans at wherever they play in these championships. But I think because it was so they do this every year. It's Indianapolis in January. They didn't make the trip for this one, but the Georgia fan sure did. And so the stadium just kind of it was like you're at a Georgia home game and something good happened. The stadium erupted and was something bad happened. And so there's something bad where you thought, oh no, I can't believe this is going to happen to them again was the weird stats and Bennett incompletion that turned out to be a fumble recovered by Alabama. I can tell you, I don't know what it was like watching it on TV. Nobody in the stadium had any inclination that was a fumble. The Alabama player who recovered it seemed to recover it by accident. He wasn't making some sort of urgent plated to recover the ball and balance he just kind of casually scooped it up. And the official comes on and says the call in the field is a fumble that's recovered by Alabama. And everybody's like, what? Now when they showed about a thousand replays on TV, they finally found one that did indeed confirm that that was the right call. But the Georgia fans didn't know that. They were booing for the whole next series. They thought they were screwed over. So this is a long way of getting back to what you said about stuff and Ben and his comments afterward. He kept getting asked about that play. And he said, that I was going to make sure that fumble did not decide the game. I was not going to be the reason we lost this game. And that takes a lot of guts. That takes a lot of faith in your own abilities. Given that things have gone south for him in these big games before. So we've talked a lot about stats and Bennett and this Georgia team over the course of the year. If I told you four months ago, that's in Bennett would be the most outstanding offensive player in the national title game and lead the Georgia bulldogs to a national title. I don't know if anybody would have been that shocked that Georgia would win the national title, but I think most people assumed it was going to be JT Daniels, who was going to do it. Right. I mean, if you go back to last season, everything seemed to get better for them once JT Daniels took over. It was, oh, now they have a real offense. So any notion they were going to win at all this year involved him the 5 star guy from Southern California as the quarterback. When he got hurt instead, took back over I don't think at first it was you assumed it was temporary. But I watched a lot of Georgia games this year because they were the number one team in the country and they were on CBS seemingly every week. And I think it became evidence me certainly sooner than it did to you and a lot of people that actually he's pretty good. He's doing exactly what they need to do. Their defense is so good. They're only giving up ten, 13 points, these teams. He doesn't need to be Bryce young. He's avoiding mistakes he's doing, but they need to do in that offense. Now, he came from game not so much, but when he came back and played the way he did against Michigan and just shredded a very good Michigan team. That I would hope that was the most people realize, yeah, this guy's actually.

"That's the worst place for Alabama to have it because that's the person who can do the most damage to them. Spencer hall joining us. Do you believe we saw Kirby smart in Georgia get pushed around by auburn in 2017 on the planes? They came back a couple of weeks later and physically dominated the tigers. Do you have any faith that Georgia is able to correct those mistakes and solve the problems? No, because I think there's just there's still a big preexisting issue in difference between the two teams. And it's that you have one guy that you can't defend. The numbers don't really work out for you. And at one point, you're going to have to leave somebody one on one. And when my guy is better than your dude, I'm going to spy that advantage and take it every single time. I set material. That's not like a psychological. I'm not saying, well, these guys are up for it. No, no, no, no, no. I don't care who's up for it. You up or down, if you can't defend the guy and he has an advantage, Alabama's gonna find a way to lean on it. And Georgia knows that, you know, one of my favorite stories I've ever heard is there was a division one coach. I think it was Tim levit who watched Mario Williams on tape walked into a room and he looked at his offensive staff used F, and he says, what are you guys going to do with that big joker? Good luck with that. Let's just watch the room. And that's very instructive for me because sometimes there are players for whom you don't have an answer. I think fans think a lot of the time, oh, if we just countered this or if we just had this defense or if I just move this guy there, puff, tough, come up with whatever schemes you want to. Kirby smart doesn't have an answer that will prevent Bryce young from getting his and that receiving core from getting open down the field. I've seen it happen. He's just not going to because no one else has. Spencer, can you stick around and I can ask you about JT Daniels and Billy Napier and Brian Kelly. Can you do that for me? Oh, certainly. Absolutely. So let's get to state of the georgia program simply thrashing arkansas. Now moving on to auburn. Could after him yet. Paul yeah georgia's loaded. There's no doubt we've seen what does defense can do doesn't seem to matter which quarterback is under center georgia's had a lot of success. But but here's the big thing jordan hare stadium. And how much of a distraction can those fans be. How many penalties can they dry. South florida head. Six motion penalties at kentucky. We saw alabama with some trouble against florida on the road. Arkansas i mean it was over before it started between the hedges with the crowd and this is a young georgia team. Relatively on offense. That hasn't really had a true hostile. Wrote environment since auburn. Twenty nine thousand nine hundred really pulled. The last time i can think about george really being affected by a was lsu twenty eighteen because twenty. One thousand nine hundred. They went too fast on auburn and all the auburn fans just died. We didn't hear from again until the fourth quarter. So i anticipate a different level of crowd noise at jordan hare whether it's debts and bennett or jt daniels. They have not experienced a stadium. Like i know from way back when i covered the tigers. I know how that auburn proud can get. Engaged in. anything goes good for auburn early. It's gonna be real interesting to see how georgia handles noise and that stadium and you mentioned. Jt daniels and i don't mean to pick on him because you know he's he's a outstanding player and he's dealing with a lot of adversity but what is his status. It's really unknown. You know paul. We were allowed to go to monday practice. Jt was not throwing the football this this lack injury or as we know it around here that injury prescott had in the preseason. The grade one latte strain arrest is important and look if you're curvy smart. This is something to manage. I mean let's face it. This is a championship sort of year for georgia. The way the schedule sets up the fact that alabama lost six first round picks. Listen get better every week. But still i don't know if i'd ever say alabama's down but they're not what they were a year ago so there's certainly a window there so if you're kirby smart you wanna manage this quarterback situation make sure. Jt's one hundred 'cause you don't wanna relapse you don't wanna be managing this in and out throughout the season you want better once and for all maybe for the kentucky game defacto. Sec championship or certainly by jacksonville. When you face the gators seventy miles from gainesville jacksonville. Yeah okay you. You open the door for me to storm right in when it comes to the gators And to your credit you. You've you've let the good with the bad flow in toward The gator program. I'm really curious what your thoughts are about them right now. After last saturday night in lexington. I was surprised i picked florida to win. I thought we were going to see a florida. George game that would decide the sec east and too many penalties. I mean listen. Florida can really run the football. But but moans play calling. It's it's it's it's overrated. And he's got to have players just like anyone else. Does he have the right guy at quarterback. Might we see a quarterback change. But i look at it like this all this florida team other than georgia. I think the went out. And so if you're talking about a nine and three season i mean mullen told us at eight and four was a great season. He got rates for that. I mean i think nine and three probably gets him another race from scott stricklin. i mean. That's that's the standard. We're georgia's at excuse. Me where florida's at right now you in nine games you know win the east once every i dunno four five years and that's probably a realistic goal for where florida football is at right now and you think about all they lost. You know they love kyle. Trask who was on weight was for their fifth in the heisman last year. And they lost two first round receivers. So it's a little bit of a rebuild for the gators and if they go nine and three You know. I think it'll be media day next year saying they're coming off a great year. We'll probably go. Yeah that's probably the great for florida. You said a minute ago. That dan mullen as an offensive coordinator was overrated. That is in contrast to what the national media consensus is that he's the best offensive coordinator play caller in america. Well then i guess that just makes stoops the greatest defensive coordinator than ever live because florida had all sorts of opportunities in the red zone. And i've been say a overrated offense coordinator said his play calling was overrated. I said i felt that that That they could have beaten alabama. I didn't think the two point conversion. I'll tell you what urban meyer would have scored more than dan mullen. That's for sure. But but if nothing else. I do think the play calling could have been better against alabama in the clutch in certainly against kentucky. I think sometimes people get carried away with narratives and they like saying that enough times. Listen dan mullen is a very likable guy. You watch his interviews. He's very down to earth You know could be your next door neighbor. You know the guy. That dresses up in halloween gear. Whether it's halloween or a press conference but if he's very likable guy. So i think they're going to continue to win. I think they'll have success. But but for the people that say that he's this crazy good played caller and genius. I mean look. They're football coaches right. Let's not turn it into more than what it is. Okay so just for the record as an off not as an offensive coordinator but as a play caller as a specific guy who makes the decision which which plays go in. You think he's overrated. Well i if you're telling me that he's the greatest in college football right now then. Yeah and i've heard a lot of people really fond over him. You out of people. I respect and listen. I know florida's got a lot of tv sets and everybody wants ratings but let's not just say things to say things let there be some proof in the pudding. I mean. the guy hasn't beaten. Nick saban animal eleven. Twelve tries it. He he made it to one. Sec championship game back into it with a scheduling All i'm saying is i think sometimes paul perception. There's kind of a runaway train on perception. As far as what's going to happen. And i've probably been guilty of that. I certainly thought florida was going to beat kentucky. I started getting carried away with the gators myself and marie jones and you know he may not even be the starter by the time. I see him play against georgia at the end of the month. I mean there's a quarterback situation there. This is a transition year for florida football. And it'd be nice to see him back in the spotlight in a couple of weeks but they're playing vanderbilt this week. So nobody's going to pay much attention to that game. If it's a transition year for florida. What is it for jimbo fisher texas. Am yeah like maybe another contract here. I mean he's got a raise from seven to nine million and he hasn't won the western beat alabama yet. So i don't know. I don't know what kind of barbecue. He's feed no zagging boosters but they single like eating it up and you know this is a big week for jimbo fisher in the as maybe they were looking ahead to alabama like the last two weeks right when they lost arkansas and mississippi state This is approved. Gain him so big game for jimbo fisher. He needs to be at least competitive. Earls jimmy sexton might only get them another million instead of two million dollar rings right. Now you're now. You're hitting close to home mike okay. Let's talk to the. Let's talk about this game this weekend. I don't know you probably were too busy listening to this program. But but south carolina fans have taken something away from two years ago and they think they can come in there and do it again i. I don't know many people that agree with that. So lay it all for us First of all. What's the quarterback situation on the dog side. Yeah i don't know kirby's kind of tricky you know last week you know everybody asks me cart you have carson beck was number two. He said yeah he's number two. What he didn't tell us was his debts and bennett was number. One in kirby kirby games a lot going to just depend on the shape of jt. Daniels i mean. Jt's the guy. Even those steps in bennett was was really remarkable. Titus school record with five touchdowns in the first half. I mean they really could escort one hundred points if they wanted to on. Uab last week it was. it was quite the route. Ap's coaching You know it's conference. Usa level coaching for all the kind words they were out scheme terribly There were three plays past plays that netted over two hundred ten yards. I mean that's shouldn't have. I mean fully once fool twice three times heck is forget it. It didn't matter but but if jt is healthy enough to be throwing the ball all way downfield and they feel like that strained. Oblique can't get reinjured. They go with them. But i just don't know if you take any sort of chance Put jt daniels. Because the one thing that south carolina can do well is get after it with that defensive line. That's the one thing they can do. Well and and one of the weaknesses for georgia's still remains the offensive line still somewhat suspect even with all those four and five stars and matt luke out there. Coaching them up They weren't really able to knock people off the ball in the game at like you would have expected from georgia team against clemson. We saw him kind of struggle. The first three quarters. So i i think if you're kirby smart why not be careful with. Jt daniels look at the sec. It's a long season paul. you gotta get. It's like talladega down there in alabama right. You've got to make it to the final lap to win the race. So why take any chances with your quarterback these not one hundred percent and you've got a very capable backup and a guy likes that's bennett. Who was ten of twelve for two hundred eighty eight yards and five touchdowns in any young guy and carson back that you want to get some work to so i think the game may dictate a little bit but also how does jt practice. And that's something we don't know to. You're essentially saying georgia doesn't need. Jt daniel to be south carolina. That's what i'm saying. Yes sir i. You can pick any other quarterback in the sec. Input behind centered. They'd be you got to score the win in the georgia defence. Pau i mean they really are remarkable. The front seven is i mean. These guys are unbelievable. I haven't seen a defensive front like this in a long time. Now they're suspect at the corners. It's way too early to to make projections about what will happen when they play alabama in the sec championship game. Different positions have to grow and mature but this defensive front is so dominant. It's such mismatch against the south carolina offensive line south carolina. They really don't have any kind of hope. Okay at least at least they can get mad at a few more people. A matt berry was earlier. Said something similar now. You said it and they can quit Coming after me. Let let me talk about just what. You're sensing from this georgia team overall. Because i was surprised by last week. I agree with you i. I didn't see much of the game. Because there's there's only so much of a rally you can. You can consume as someone trying to to watch your games but do you feel how or how much better do you feel or do you feel really good about this team. I have you felt really good about team all along the same. I mean it's it's you know it's the same. I mean probably a little better. I see how well stetson bennett performance as a backup you. So how much air he got under the ball. You know one of the problems with steps and bennett. Last year paul was. He couldn't throw the ball deep actively. And you know he's gone to school. He's been working out with jt daniels. He sees the way the deep ballesta to put some air under get those and he was incredibly successful so to me. One of the questions is you know. Who's your number two right. We we've seen alabama pull that card a few times against georgia. Do you have a good enough and capable enough backup if something were to happen and you know again. The sec's brutal is we're not talking about the acc. You know you'll play anybody. You're the big ten in the pack. We're not talking a big twelve. We're not talking about those leagues. We're talking about a league where we can week out. You've got nfl players coming out. I gotta look do is look at the draft numbers all these teams have. Nfl prospects. they can they can accu down. They can hurt. It's a battle every week. And and it's largely a war of attrition right. it's hard to predict what's going to happen in in december because we don't know who's going to survive the season for these teams. I mean my goodness look at all. The injuries georgia had last year by the time they played florida. They were misinformed defensive starters and then they get their quarterback knocked out with fourteen zero lead over florida and florida's suddenly they're all this revisionist histories come up this week. Like they were clear and above the best team. Last i'm kuwait. Everybody not remember what happened last year. Everybody got amnesia but talked about like florida. Like they were just ed shoulder. Come on you know. that'd be an interesting game down there and swamp. Well i want to get to the because a lot of confidence from from the gators. We're here we hear it You know the swamp all the things that really don't matter very much In terms of matchups. But how would you assess this game saturday afternoon. Well kind of one of those guys. That says i gotta see it to believe and dan mullen is oh intent against alabama so another some people out there. They're talking about. What a remarkable job. he's done. Turn the program around you know. Coach mullen told everyone they're coming off a great season at eight and four campaign. We talked about that from. Sec media days eight four now qualifies as a great season for florida. So maybe they'll have a great performance. Stay within three touchdowns but you know. They lost a key. Everybody wants to talk about molin and quarterbacks.

Paul all indications would seem to be but there's been some reports that j. jt has been limited in practices jt. Actually taking a shot in scrimmage two around august twenty first and mighty taken an upper body bruise been a little four. I didn't think it affected his performance against clemson. He was only sacked once against tigers. Jt did the post game in fact and all seemed well. A lot of these guys go through treatment and have limited reps throughout the week. I mean that's pretty normal at other positions It happens on occasion at quarterback. So is this much ado about nothing or could this be the start of a quarterback controversy. I don't know nothing surprises me anymore covering the georgia bulldogs quarterback controversy. Is that what i heard you say. Well i mean if you play out this scenario the carson back plays and plays really well. I suppose people would want to sit back and and and evaluate that i mean carson beck is a really talented quarterback you know i was talking with hudson. Mason was a quarterback at georgia. To be able to win before this influx of even more talent and even more prestige programs enter. Like i think about texas a. and m. you know always one of the best teams on paper and hasn't really had that special season and they are losing their cachet would seems to be very important to them of being the only texas school in sec when when university of texas joins up. So i think they're under pressure to do that and i think georgia is under pressure. I mean i. Don't think kirby smarts going anywhere anytime soon but this another program that on paper always seems like it should be right in that national championship conversation and they just sometimes find ways to not make the playoff or when they do. "Always great to Welcome back mike griffith to the program and mike. Let's start with the georgia bulldogs. After a spectacular saturday. They were hoping for one more game. It had already been postponed and now it has been canceled in what has been the reaction there and can anything be done about well. We're not gonna probably ever have anything like this in the future but really curious about your thoughts. Yeah a lot of fury. A lotta anger at georgie. No i it's twofold one georgia's playing great football. Jt daniels i mean before jt. They convert forty two percent of the third downs with jt. They convert sixty six right. Jt daniel six touchdown passes on on third down throws three incompletions. I mean the guys night and day. It's been amazing. Some people maybe. It's the schedule actually know if you look at the third down defense is the last. Three teams actually ranked better than the first six on average. What georgia's played. This guy has made all the difference in the world. It makes a difference in recruiting. Suddenly you have players. That are migrating to georgia that. Want to be a part of the georgia offense again so this transformation is happening in the shadows. Now that's georgia's fault. They didn't take care of business when they needed to jacksonville or in tuscaloosa and so they're sitting out this week so you don't get to see it but it's been happening on saturdays in athens and this georgia outgoing class. All these guys had an opportunity to be the winningest class in georgia football history. That's quite a legacy. But because vanderbilt canceled out all they can do is tie that mark now and so the a piece of their legacy is gone understand. Covid nineteen is not controllable but in the case of vanderbilt its players that are quitting the team and in the case of vanderbilt they cancelled on december fifth rally the troops for their senior day on december twelve and then canceled on georgia again. After the fact so georgia couldn't even get an alternative game that was acceptable for the senior day. So there's a lot of of anger and frustration and disappointment and all george can do now is hope that they get a good bowl draw. I think they need notre dame to upset clemson. I think if that happens. And if chalk holds and ohio state beat the bad northwestern and alabama roles florida. You could see georgia clemson in the orange bowl and i think that could excite the georgia fan but as things currently project. You're looking maybe. Cincinnati georgia in which case. First of all. Let's talk about the good news. I the fact that he played well for those who missed the game and it was not exactly the feature game of the day How did he play. I thought he was fantastic. Four hundred yards four touchdowns as the first georgia quarterback to do that since twenty thirteen for a program that has had lingering questions about this going back even pass through the twenty nine thousand nine season to have a performance like this especially when they couldn't run the ball. At all this was the worst rushing performances. One thousand nine hundred eighty six which is a total yards. Jt daniels doesn't play the way he does it. I think it's pretty fair to say. The georgia probably loses to mississippi state team numbers. Not that highly thought of coming into saturday. We're talking to kinda raw and lane kiffin alluded to that as well. Which is just a shocking statement. Is it not that we we ended up getting to this point for those who have not followed the vagaries connor of jt daniels. Do we know what the hold up was with him. in terms of clarence yeah so. His dad came out and made some comments today. You can read them a dog nation where he wasn't one hundred percent ready to go and august and even september. We know he wasn't clear to play in. That arkansas game came out right before the auburn game. Second game of the season and said jt daniels physically clear to play. Football games and reality is yours. Second game of the year. We didn't end up seeing him until the seventh game. We know he took that knee. Brace off prior to the tennessee game and practices in warm ups. But for whatever reason we didn't see him it may have been an issue of how comfortable he was in his knee. And the level of mobility that kirby smart was looking for that's something he's referenced. Many times based off what we saw on saturday that mobility was there the ability to make plays in really. I think the biggest question at least fans people who follow the program asked me or how close was jt daniels to what we saw on saturday back on november seventh when georgia played florida because if daniels plays like he did on saturday against florida. There's a real chance of jordan. Finds a way to at least made that game closer and possibly even win. It just truly amazing to think about how different this georgia season is and while they're having a better season than most two losses of Effectively out and georgia was expecting to be in atlanta at the end of the year and not watching on television or playing in another game. Just give us your your your read on the energy that has now maybe been brought back to a program that was seemingly dead in the aftermath of the florida game. It was a it was a mighty big fall from grace. Do you think this is going. Yeah people's energized. Even i think if. Jt daniels keeps playing away. He does. It is gonna keep people interested in tuned in the rest of the season. 'cause you point out. This is georgia program. Where going eight and two this year in a burst in the peach bowl. That doesn't do it for them. There was a lot of negative energy around this program. Losing the florida so for daniels will come out. Look good look like a possible at least certainly this season and potentially even long term solution at the quarterback position there for georgia. I think that's huge place. While again against south carolina and finishes the season out strong. I do think that can build a lot of momentum towards that twenty twenty one season when a lot of these skill players.
