"This week on Monday October twelfth a growing number of cities and states across the country celebrated indigenous Peoples Day. It comes as an important corrective after decades who celebrating the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus each year we know, of course that no such discovery happened. What did happen was colonization and centuries of subjugation, murder disenfranchisement, and displacement of native Americans as we reflect on our history and on the stories that have been too often excluded we consider the importance of not just what stories get told but of who gets to tell them. Today were thrilled to be joined on the podcast by Jose Rivas who will help us think through these questions. Hosts way is a visual storyteller educator, creative director and self-described indigenous futurist. He descended from the Michika Oton, people's he aims to challenge the quote mainstream narrative about indigenous peoples and to be a visual Messenger for those in the shadows of our society. His work has appeared in the Guardian, The New York Times and National Geographic to name a few publications. He's also the founder of the two thousand eighteen standing strong project attribute to the water protectors at standing rock North Dakota and co-founder of natives. Photograph a database for photo editors looking to hire indigenous photographers in North America. Today he joins me to discuss his work at the intersection of art journalism and social. Justice I'll be speaking to him from my home in Fort Greene. Brooklyn the occupied land of the topic narcis people and he from Portland. Oregon. The land of the Chinook welcome Ho sway and thank you so much for joining us today. Yeah thank you for having me. On Your podcast today it's an it's it's an honor for us to I want to start. You describe the work you do now is being at the intersection of art, journalism and social justice but I think you originally came to this work through photography. So I wanted to start there and ask how did you get started to Pataki? The. Thought if it was my destiny. It was the end of a circle of story. So my father who is photographer as well? He yeah he basically. Use images since I was a little kid and I grew up seeing the I grew up seeing my father. Do continue to us in like baptisms like more districts stuff in the same time he was also addicted to alcohol. So I grew up thinking of photography as something that actually can hate it and actually something that I resented a lot. But when I got older and started going through my own journey in my own process of self discovery, I was able to use the cameras tool for expanding in really upgrading Hoy was in really my operating system as a human being in really understanding woman was. So that's where I think that the destiny came in where. Tools were allowing us to tell stories visually. Could also be used for healing in kids will be used for finding a way to express in say something that you had insignia and for me that was my own personal healing process in started allow with. Understanding where I came from my experience a young man leaving them the streets where Mickey quietly I was homeless for a bit..

"Now let's get started with the podcast episode. So in the last podcast episode, the Zenko on shared is called Joe Shoes. Mu. And I want to share a couple of thoughts about this. The the Cohen itself goes like this Joe Shoe was a famous Chinese and master who lived in Joe Shoe the province from which he took his name one day a troubled monk approached him intending to ask the master for guidance a dog walked by the monk asked Joe Shoe has that dog a Buddha nature or not? The monk had barely completed as question when Josue shouted Mu. So I want to share some thoughts and he starts come from the Book Zenko on's, and this is a book written by Gyo May Kubo say the of all the Cohen's Joe. Shoes Mu is the most famous. It's extremely popular with Zen Masters who frequently assign it to novices if the student tens properly to business mu comes to resemble a hot iron ball stuck in his throat, he can either swallow it nor spit out the importance of shoes mu is it's succinct one syllable revelation of Buddhism. So little background here, and and and again, all of these thoughts come in from the book Zen Cohen's Baio Make Kubo say. He says, Mu, is the negative symbol in Chinese meaning not or no thing Mu. Is also a basic concept in oriental philosophy. There is a relative mu and an absolute mu, the relative mu and Chinese characters is the opposite of you. The letter you which means is the absolute mu of Zen Buddhism transcends is and is not in order to understand this Cohen. It is necessary to be aware of this distinction when the monk asked, Shoshu has that Dog Abboud nature not he was asking not only from the standpoint of his own troubled mind. But from the Basic Buddhist teaching that all beings have Buddha Nature Joe shoe realized this his Mu as an answer was a blow aimed at breaking or untying the monks attachment to that teaching. The essence of Buddha's teaching is non attachment. All human troubles and sufferings without exception are due to attachment even attachment to the idea of non attachment is attachment. Joe Shoe wanted the monk to transcend the relative world transcend the teachings, Transcend Mu, transcend Buddhism, and gain the free and independent world of enlightenment. Satori or enlightenment is this new dimension or perspective in life ordinary human life has always attached to the relative the is and the is not good and bad right and wrong. But life itself is constantly changing the condition of society changes right and wrong often changes. Every situation is different according to time and place. So static concepts are not appropriate to life this thus mu is crucial offers no surface upon which the intellect can fasten. The word mu must be experienced as the world So those are the thoughts from the book Zen Cohen's Baio Make Kubo say regarding the specific Cohen Joe Shoes Mu. And I I wanted to share this. Cohen because as the book mentions, it's most popular, perhaps the most famous of the Cohen's. But to have a little bit of background, you need to understand the answer. So essentially, what's happening here is you have a teacher who's being asked a question by a student by a novice monk and the question is so out of place because. You know the Buddhist teaching of Buddha nature is that all beings have buddha nature. So it's like someone coming law coming along and asking a very obvious question which he should know the answer to according to the teaching that all beings have Buddha nature. The answer to the question does a dog have Buddha nature is obviously yes. But josue knew that he was asking this question that should be obvious. So instead of giving the obvious answer, he gave the answer that the monk was not expecting by shouting Moo or no, or no thing. And in the tradition of Cohen's and in the tradition of Zan, this is kind of the shock and all approach the shock and awe is that that's not what I was expecting. So here you have this novice monk asking a question, get an answer that he's not expecting. And it leaves him confused and that's the exact state that Cohen's and oftentimes Zen in general want to leave you in because it's trying to break you free of the conceptualization 's that you're making in your own mind.

"And it was kind of when you're saying it kind of reminded me Taylor's like he does he's little intimate settings It's almost like a size of a bar whatever it is, and he's there and this jam packed this bar never had that many people in its existence. It's been twenty five years and is dues blown out the walls you know what I'm saying. But it's like you know releases like that but he's also respect that on the mainstream level. Like the ones that no no, they're like this guy's really good writer. Yeah. His music just like further the average listen there's a little hard to. Guess consume if anyone's ever listened to earl. His newer stuff but yeah, I mean, I I think it's cool. What he's doing he seems happy. Yeah. I think that's what it's about finding your happiness and I also feel like with in. Mixing Now Right. So you have someone who singling yeah. I think that's what makes it appealing because you become truly unique. You don't have to stay stuck to a specific Jonah you'll have to stay stuck to. Specific style back in a day, you would have like an rb singer singing on your tracking and you're wrapping for the you know the hip hop scene. Now it's like yourself can sing you could be doing instrumentals you could have produced a whole thing like. They're just figuring it all out themselves. Especially now more than ever with with technology, we're just talking right before you got on about you know a camera and what it can do, how can shoot live videos for us on a couple of clicks here and there Has that changed the game as well you think like with instruments are are they urged instruments go out the window and just have these Just these boards where I can make a trumpet sound with Three Little Touches the keys here? Do you really do people were going to stick with having the actual instrument? I think it just depends on the person me personally I like I like both I like using both yeah. I linked up with like a really well known producer and he was He was playing like a trump on my keys. He's like a real trumpet player couldn't even do that. He was really good. Yeah. He also used live instruments, but we were there I think it depends on the person as far as me. I always try to include like actual live instruments Some people say like using virtual instruments is like cheating or whatever I I just think like things evolve. And I think like you should. You should use all these tools to your advantage. If something sounds cheap when you don't like it, that's a different thing but if that's the sound you're going for. I always try to include both I think that's for me. It works It's actually really fun I've tried to do everything live and it sounds amazing it works for some stuff some stuff it doesn't I guess just. You're going for. Yeah. I mean there's there's tools for everything, right? I mean. I know growing up my dad was handyman until her my uncle, they had tools like a Hansel. And and obviously the hammer or whatever that. They were building beautiful things but I if I could build the same thing they were doing with an air gun and a circular Saul I will not feel any less of a man honestly being serious. I'll just proud of what I produced and I'd be. Yeah. You GotTa give him credit for X. Y. and Z., but I'm like listen. I'll take advantage to take advantage of you know a tool and it serves the same purpose. Now, don't get me wrong I still can use a hammer and a saw as well. We're a different project. But who's to say, they wouldn't have if they had the ability if they had the if it was exposed to them at that point, it just depends on the person you have songs going number one whereas like a little loop. And, a drum loop I think drake does that I get like really upset with drake sometimes. All right the production sounds cool. But sometimes I'm like, all right, please do a little more. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think for roused King of that Really Great and I think he he utilizes both and I think to me for US lake the ultimate producer up there with Dr Dre as far as like hip hop. Guy, from Puerto Rico his name is VC Dante. He was part of God's say and the guy now has like twenty eight grammys how The guys like a beast producing but he uses both okay. Okay. And he was like his first big hit it was like. Thong mixture with like Brazilian sounds and it was like really weird but the song was like huge. Everywhere you went and even like the the chorus was like longer than usual songs. Yes. Like his chorus was longer than like an an average song at the time and he repeated that chorus. Thirty Times. With the nine minute song Yeah. The actual not the one that was on MTV what the actual songs like seven minutes. Well, that's wild producing you. Do you think that becomes like a style when people use like four example, there was a time I would say the early two thousands where everyone used Scott Storage, and they just constantly is back. Outlet better than I think he's be. Yeah it'd be goes even better now. Do you think Or even now, like almost every pop song, you hear it was like Dj Mustard and then it went to take heat and now a whoever it is now constantly but every song on the radio is the same person different artists but the same do produce is it like a style thing or just going with WHO's popping at that time? I think it's I mean from a business standpoint is like all right. If this song is hot, how can we recreate that and leisure? The baby does that like? All Day like, Oh, I had a number one hit I'm do it again and then like. I guess he stays up there. Yeah, I think it's like whoever's hot right now and then that person was like the Guy for me I try to look for things like different like if something sounds the same. All the time I think that's when we create crappy things because why not be different? Yeah. So have you ever gotten in a predicament where you're doing or you're just creating with someone? And you like you ended up with a finished product that you liked and they liked equally as much and you kind of do you ever get? WHO's GonNa take it like who's GonNa, put it on there that actually happened with my buddy heater in the. We have our first two albums are together. Yeah. Actually three that live one. So for like since I started releasing stuff has been with him. Yeah and now he's like, Oh, I'm releasing a solo album and and the. Bunch of time creating producing these tracks. Yeah, and then he says, this is my song. And he's like my brother and I look at them and Mike. No it's not. And then he goes, well, you can have that one. More. Like I. It's Kinda like difficult but at the end of the day like it, it's cool. As long as it gets out there like we just released a song called now and I think we both love it. Yeah and he wanted another one that unreleased and now it was really more commercial than the other one. Yeah and he says I want the other one for my project and I said I, really like that song and said, you can have now. As Hens now, my God..

"So moving forward, what what would you want the shows to be said you have to close out kind of setting do you want what do you hope for? I think moving forward again same thing like a multicultural environment. Again. Something like very different that you normally see I. Think I wanNA play more would set and lighting and stuff like that Basically just follow the same format but try to include different cultures like we already touched on Dominican Republic The second guys were from Columbia. Maybe next next one, there's like a huge Guatemalan presence in Trenton where we do it maybe we'll have somebody that does like traditional music from Guatemala. Marika. And then the third one maybe like touch unlike some afro-caribbean stuff a little more But yeah, each time is suddenly try to show people that is more than dislike popular music that you hear on on the radio. And Trap and All this stuff that they listen to normally. Of that stuff is caused fun. It's really fun to listen to. But I think a lot of times people don't even know that there's lake really good music other than that. Yeah. Because even jazz jazz is boring and I'm like well, have you have you looked at like Tom Mitch? Who's who does jazz but his own way? He sounds crazy. Yeah and I think the guy doesn't even like read music. Yeah He is. Yes. Yeah. You should. You should check him out. He's he's like crazy just released an album nothing from the UK or London. Wherever. You I mean, we grow up for us we grew up in. A Christian House setting right. So yes. So so we had obviously Spanish. Music. Gospel, but one of the big ones where we went to. If we're listening to music that was in English was always my we want the jazz and so we're always had like jazz or blues kind of thing going anyway. So when we started listening to as we became teenagers are listening to. Rap Rap and hip hop. I was more into like the conscious rappers common Talib Quality. So we started listening to these guys, and so I was already into like, wow, there's sort poetic. I. Like it. It was wasn't a later on where I got into like it was like I. Guess you call more of like a what you hear mainstream now but that's still even is it what? So I have appreciation for the jazz the that little you know that aspect of it. And it, and it's good and I feel like sometimes. With a social media. Those those genres kind of get buried because there's so much marketing going on with the other stuff and like you said, it's not that it's not necessarily that it's bad but there is no. There could be something that could be way more intriguing to you and you don't even know what's out there. Yeah. I mean like going up against like. Beyond sees great. It's beyond say like Disney plus she's everywhere right right. So so you take like a Tom Mitch, that I just mentioned on my guys knew Mitch's like. Not really he has a great album like an amazing album. Put him up against like a beyond or even like a meek mill let's say, yeah, and most people. Who Meek Mill is right right. Right off the top like of their. These labels get behind this one person that they know at the end of the day. We all hate to say, you know there's it's a business right and they're dirt. They're trying to make their their money. They're trying to make their return on their investment, and so they're they're getting behind the specific artists. Pacific. Songs House, whatever it is and unfortunately some people get lost in a saucer. You know talent gets lost in there in the in the in the middle of the ocean, the sharks. I think it's also like a it could. It could be like both ways it could be a good and bad thing like, I. Know this one guy he's like really talented and he refuses to to put his music on streaming services. He releases CDs he refuses to Film Music Videos anything he refuses. He says, I'm happy where I'm at and ask them how do you make money? He says I am making more money than some of my artists that are some of my friends resigned and I said how and he said I will contact my list of like a three hundred people say I have a show tonight and they private location I will send it to you and our before. He says he lost his want someone and they will go to his show. Charge them like twenty bucks, but some of them will pay way more. And the way he designs his sets. They're like amazing and it's almost like who is this guy? What is he doing now? He says he's been doing it for like fifteen years. He's developing like this long list of of followers. And like he says I'm happy he says I would hate to like tore the world and do all these things. So I think while you may have like somebody who's used as as beyonce meek mill you also have that guy who who's completely happy on his hill and Puerto Rico during shows by the beach barefoot. Phantom, like nobody knows about like you don't get no info about him until underground it's really jess underground. They know like they follow him but he doesn't tell you where raise actual and then when he tells me like you might have to drive up amount and then you might need like a jeep today. That's why people go. It's like an experience you that's awesome. Cool There's There's there's a bunch of. Folks who made it off just Internet basically having soldier boy. They have like their little unique following, whatever it is for whatever reason right? They just follow this person and it is almost like like earl sweatshirt is a person who who's a person that was like he's not mainstream like at all at all. But if you mentioned him to a specific group of people like we do said, die hard fans they love this dude..

How the Post Office's email service could be exploited by criminals

"W w if your post off postal service customer, everyone listening is if you have the it's called the informed delivery, should delete the app and not subscribe to that anymore. What should you do or is this fixed? So it looks like the post office fixed it they patched it. Just like you patch windows, you know, monthly you're probably daily at this point. But but yeah. Claims that they have a patch that loophole. And so in theory, it's not. You know, he to worry about. Now, what else is this is even if you Scott Sloan or media guy, even if we don't sign up and use informed delivery, everything is scanned everything that the post office goes Josue, automated scanners. So even if you're not getting the info the influence out there. And so if I'm a one of these hackers compromised that API I see it's coming even if you don't even know the services out there. So it kind of doesn't matter if you don't do something or you do something, you know, if you use not it's the information's available via the USPS infrastructure. So there's nothing you as the consumer can do at all. Dude. Definitely you just did it it now that

"Is there a way in which either of them has done something that we didn't expect them to do or is it just that they are both really good teams that are maybe playing slightly better than we expected them to both play both really good okay well we'll probably give them more airtime later in the year at guests if the pennant race continues but it's been enjoyable certainly if you are a yankees red sox fan and probably everyone else who hates both of these teams thinks it's a nightmare but this is where we are can you think of another pitcher before who's had carpal tunnel syndrome that's the thing right who's got yeah david price with symptoms of what i was worried might be threatened outlet syndrome but no carpal tunnel which is something that i will forever associated with dilbert well i know that josue maya had something like carpal tunnel i don't know whether it was i think it was right because he either blamed it on or it was blamed on guitar hero rate and playing lots of guitar hero and so now people are probably silly blaming david prices carpal tunnel unfortunate i don't know whether there's any truth to that but that's the only one that comes to mind josie maya and he had other injury problems as well so i can ask you what is fortnight for tonight is it's an online multiplayer game it's kind of part of this little royal game trend which is just sweeping the video game world and it is the latest and greatest and most popular of those games so it is kind of taking over everywhere right now is it like a shoot kinda game.
