"Population has received an updated by valent booster dose. I'm sure you have more updated numbers on that doctor, but can you tell me to what extent the lack of booster shot getting is concerning to you? Well, it's particularly a serious issue for older adults because there is no question immunity wanes and there's no question that these new variants can get around the early immunity that people may have had. And so getting the booster shot is going to be very important. I got the booster shot. I made sure my parents got the booster shot right away. And I think this is the danger. As the emergency ends from a legal perspective, that hasn't changed anything from the virus perspective. So we have to remain as vigilant as possible and keeping up with vaccines is just absolutely critical. And again, we want to be able to keep up with this vaccine. We want to keep up with the flu vaccine. We want to make sure that there aren't gaps between groups of people so that there aren't inequities and access to vaccines. All those things are really important and to do those things, we have to remember that we need a strong public health system instead of just look forward looking forward and say, you know, COVID, we don't have to worry about it anymore. So having said that, we still have to worry about COVID. Got to get our vaccines and the boosters. And so on. But I am already thinking, I had a very dark dystopian conversation with a colleague here, and we just said, you know, at some point, mother earth is just saying enough. And either through cross contamination, chemicals in our system, plastic center system, what have you, all the things that people have been talking about, you do wonder what is the next virus or something that impacts the planet akin to what happened with the Spanish flu that wipes out a massive amount of people. Is that something that is likely to happen? What is on the radar at Johns Hopkins when it comes to this? Well, it's on tokens. We are absolutely thinking about many different terrible scenarios. We are experiencing unprecedented temperature change on the globe and that's causing all kinds of problems for humans and for animals and then it's also putting animals in humans into closer contact, which creates the opportunity for more pandemics. And so you've got environmental challenges. You've got new infectious disease emergencies. They do. We have the center for health security at Johns Hopkins that has identified a series of families of pathogens that could be the most likely candidates to be the next pandemic. The next big one. And there are proposals to prepare for them by preparing potential vaccines in advance and doing extra research in these most likely to become a pathogen to become a pandemic pathogen doing that in advance. And those kinds of investments are important. I think I would say they're not enough. It's also important to remember that we had a great vaccine very, very clear. I was going to say, we've been here before, right? Of COVID. We have to be able to deliver the vaccine. So we have to be thinking about how to have the best countermeasures, how to deliver them, how to have not just the thing to give out, but the roads to do it, the metaphorical load to do it into communities that may be distrustful and you really need a strong public health system to do that. So it's really important to be thinking about what actually will be the next pandemic in preparing, but also these universal protection. All right, so appreciate at the time that we've had with you. Doctor Joshua sharfstein, he's vice dean for public health practice and community engagement at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health. As you know, supported by Michael R Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg philanthropies joining us on the phone from Baltimore. Such an important story that we are definitely going to continue to be talking about as the virus continues to mutate. But first off, we are going to quickly get a check on the latest world and national news

Insurance rates are expected to go up about 16% in 2023. In sure if I says its survey shows rates will keep going up because of several reasons first, inflation, followed by the higher cost of vehicle repairs, higher driving and accident rates, and more frequent natural disasters that altered damage vehicles. Insurance rates are already way up in Virginia and Maryland, they are two of the three states where insurance rates rose the most in 2022, 25%. Kyle Cooper, WTO news. The death of actress Kirstie Alley from colon cancer has renewed focus on the illness and its prevention. Medical professionals are now recommending that people start getting colonoscopies at 45, rather than 50. Doctors including David Bryant at the Ascension via Christie cancer center at Wichita, Kansas are seeing more younger people getting colon cancer. We're not quite sure why that is. We think some of it has to do with lifestyle and diet. We're really trying to figure that out. Some 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer each year with just over half of those cases being fatal. Jim crisis news. Now turning to local health news, you can't overstate the danger. That's the message from a public health leader as teenagers around the area have been overdosing on counterfeit painkillers. People are not aware of the danger. "49 and ten quarter. It's 48 in Columbia. At one 40, another twist in the opioid crisis, a number of teenagers of overdosed in our area over the past week. Some have died after taking counterfeit versions of the painkiller percocet that contained fentanyl. Our Nick eye and Ellie talked about it with doctor Joshua sharfstein with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health. The contamination of counterfeit percocet and other counterfeit pills with fentanyl is something that has been happening for at least a few years. It's one of the reasons we have so many overdose deaths from opioids. Now, more than 100,000 a year in the United States, which is really a record. And it's because people are not aware of the danger of the products they're taking, they may think they're getting one thing, but fentanyl is so potent. And sole lethal that it is really an incredible risk to be taking counterfeit pills right now. And the counterfeits can look very, very similar to the original. So they don't come with a marking on it saying this is counterfeit. And you just have to be aware that if you're not getting it through the normal supply chain, like a prescription going to the pharmacy, then at the risk is going to be there. We've been hearing from police departments around the area, including prince George's county police in Maryland, Prince William county police in Virginia. They've been saying that these pills are around right now causing overdoses and deaths right now. It just seems like a bright red blinking warning sign for families. Sure, I think it's warning it's not just from police departments, but from health departments, these kinds of risks have been around and what may be happening is maybe there was a big shipment of counterfeit drugs that came in and then people are buying them on the street and winding up at a dying because of the fentanyl. I think that it's first of all, it's important for people to know about this, not just families, but also people who are using drugs that things are much more dangerous than they might have anticipated. But for families, particularly this is an extra time, particularly with the holidays approaching to really try to encourage their family members who are using drugs to seek treatment. There's very, very effective treatment for opioid addiction. And you should be able to get it in the emergency room or from your doctor, or call the health department, get referred to a program, these treatments can take away the craving that people feel for opioids because of the addiction that they experience and can also dramatically reduce the chance of overdose and the chance of dying. By 75% or more. That was doctor Joshua sharfstein with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public

"COVID cases are up more than 100% in D.C. and Maryland 63% in Virginia and many areas schools are also reporting significant spikes in infections among students and staff The number of people in the hospital with COVID in our region slowly increasing But thankfully deaths from the virus remain low This morning doctor Joshua sharfstein the vice dean for public health practice and community engagement at Johns Hopkins University about the rise in COVID infections right now It is a sign of just how incredibly contagious these new variants are Because you're right it's getting warmer but we're still seeing more cases People who've been infected a couple months ago some of them are getting infected again We're just seeing a lot of ability of these variants to infect people even if they've been sick or vaccinated before But like you said the good news is particularly for people who've been vaccinated The chance of getting severely ill is low Let's talk about this from a parental standpoint because I know there are a lot of people who have kids in the fight to 11 year old range And given the cases that are being reported the booster shots for the kids of those ages Are they coming too late for this school year Well first of all there are a lot of kids that have not gotten vaccinated at all And it is a good thing to get vaccinated because of the risk of severe illness and not just direct illness but also the immune reaction that kids can get from COVID this the vaccine really dramatically reduces the chance of that terrible reaction to COVID that kids can get The booster can provide additional support particularly against omicron And it may be late for this school year because fiscal year is almost over But we don't know what's around the corner or the next variant of omicron that's going to come So I think it's a smart thing to do to consider that for kids What form of the virus are we seeing right now that's contributing to this uptick in cases and hospitalizations I'm pretty sure we're looking at BA two which is one of the sub variants that came off of that one And what's interesting is even though these viruses all have sort of the same name it sounds like they're just like cousins They actually are responding quite differently to the immune system so that people who had maybe a BA one infection can turn around and get a BA two infection It doesn't protect as much as you might think just by the naming of the virus So it really means that if people want to stay safe from the virus they have to continue to take care wearing high quality masks when you're in indoor settings with a lot of people is a good thing to do Having meetings outside eating outside taking care of particularly if there are people that you may be exposed to who are at high risk for their illnesses or their inability to be vaccinated With the latest on COVID concerns this morning that's.

Washington, DC Coronavirus Update: 1 New Death, 65 Additional Cases

"776 new cases, eight new death, there have been more than 98,000 positive cases reported in Maryland. And word of an uptick of more than 1000 new cases in Virginia, 1114 to be exact and 11 do death. Covert positive cases in Virginia now total more than 103,000. Latest numbers illustrating a downward tick, as we say locally in Maryland and Virginia, But it is a small downward ticket experts say. We're not out of the woods. Not at all. They continue tracking new cases, hospitalizations in the all important positivity rate, looking at of all the people getting tested. How many of them turn out the house, Kobe Joshua Sharfstein with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, says the number COMPTEL us whether enough testing is being done and whether there's community transmission. The latest seven day average positivity rate in the district is 3.3%. DC is meeting the standard for having enough testing because it's less than 5% and if it's relatively stable at that number, then you're still seeing continued community spread. The picture is similar in Maryland, which sits a 3.63% Virginia's at 7.2% which means it could perhaps use more testing and also still has a fair amount of between new transmission. John Aaron w T. Coronavirus cases plateau across D.C. area

"Reports 775 new cases today in 12 deaths, The state has done 1.4 million tests so far. Virginia today is reporting 1300 New Cove in 19 cases and five deaths. The state has performed 1.2 million Tests. DC today reports 64 new cases and one death. The covert positivity rate, which are percentages of people who test positive for the virus out of those who have been tested overall, continue to move in the right direction in the region. But when expert says it's not all good news, Maryland announced its daily percent of positive cove in tests at 3.2% a record low, Johns Hopkins, Dr Joshua Sharfstein says that isn't the whole picture. Maryland has a relatively low percent positive but is identifying quite a lot of cases about 1000 a day. That's a pretty high number. It's more than Virginia. Reporting in Virginia's a bigger state. Currently, Northern Virginia has a 6% positive rate and increase in hospitalizations but lower number of cases being identified overall and he says, D C is doing well. The number of cases our population is lower. The hospitalizations have come down and the percent positive is low, but it probably won't get much lower while it's surrounded by Maryland and Virginia with their higher numbers, Michelle Morello w T o P News
