"Karen actually had planned. Meanwhile laura was in charge of picking up seventeen year old missy as missy left her house around three pm. She told her mom that she and laura we're going to the park and that she'd be backed by eight that night. She promised to call if she was going to be late. Irene thought nothing of it. After all laura was like a second daughter to her together laura and missy headed to the park but when they got there karen and eva were waiting as if on cue karen and laura got out of their cars and started yelling pretending to be mad at one another. Mri wasn't sure what was going on. But soon laura stormed back to the car and took off with missy still in the passenger seat. She sped away toward their mountain. Hang out of camp. Meanwhile karen followed close behind in her own car. She told evil that it was all a trick and that they were just going to scare missy when they finally reached the parking lot off the main road. Karen and laura got out of the cars and turned on mri. They told her they were only pretending to be mad at each other. The real person they were angry with was her alone with them missy sense that her friends were going to do something bad to her like. Leave her up there on the mountain all by herself. She had no idea what they were. Actually planning laura and karen lead missy up. The dirt path with eve of following in the rear missy was crying. She still didn't understand what was going on or what she had done to make her friends. This angry with her soon. The four girls made it to the clearing by a stream where they usually hung out and party when they got there. Karen and laura directed missy toward a large rock on the edge of the stream sat there. They called her names and screamed at her about sleeping with both of their boyfriends missy cried the whole time wishing something to make them believe she hadn't done any of those things. At one point. Laura grabbed mris hair and pulled her head back then. Karen took a knife and cut off chunks of mris long brown hair. They wanted to humiliate her just like they felt she done to them. According to research psychologists walter torres and raymond bergner humiliation is often of primary motive for vengeance especially for people who feel that they've been wronged but don't see a way to even the scales without doing something drastic. Both karen and laura felt humiliated by missy who they believed was responsible for ruining their relationships torres and burgers. Research shows that humiliation much like jealousy can lead to all consuming thoughts. Someone who's been humiliated often becomes obsessed with the situation and finding a way to rectify it. For karen and laura cutting off mris hair was away to reclaim their power over her. Her hair was a symbol of her beauty and popularity taking that away from her was retaliation after they were done off her hair. Laura stepped out into the stream waiting. In so that the water was above her ankles. She ordered missy to join her missy tried to refuse but karen pushed her off the rock and towards the stream hesitantly missy took a couple of steps and then laura lunged forward and grabbed her arm pulling her in. The water was no more than eight inches deep but it still felt dangerous. That's when eva been watching. The whole ordeal from the shore became frightened and ran back up the path. She had a sinking feeling in her stomach. Something was very very wrong. When she got to the cars they were both locked. Instead of waiting there either hesitantly started back towards the stream hoping to get the car keys. She hoped things had calmed down. Maybe they had just done what karen said and given me a scare but then as she got closer. Eva heard one desperate nightmarish screen. Thanks again for tuning into female. Criminals will be back next week with part two where we'll discuss. Finally on September twentieth she and bill decided to take action. They made plans to dismember rodents body and crush it in a meat grinder. At four thirty that evening the pair headed to the store and left with an ice crusher. They went back to bill's house and hung black tarps in the window to avoid being seen. At this point bill wanted to wash his hands of the whole mess. He had already helped plan the robbery built the bomb that killed Brian and lied to the F. B. Agents. Not to mention stashing Jim's body in his freezer for Marjorie. Enough was enough. So, while he and Marjorie were hanging tarps, he insisted that they needed a stapler to help. "As soon as the Romans docked in the port, they would be able to storm the gates and conquer the city. And kill its leaders Antony had very little time left and he knew he wished to spend it at Cleopatra's side. Antony returned to Cleopatra's palace and demanded to know the Queen's location. That's when a messenger arrived to break the terrible news. Cleopatra. Had died by suicide. Antony's army had betrayed him and his lover was dead. He had nothing left. So he decided to join Cleopatra in the afterlife he ordered his loyal. Guard arrows to stab him in the stomach. In Ancient Rome falling on your own sword to evade defeat was an honorable act but arrows could not bear to kill his commander. So Arrows stabbed himself instead. Bewildered and desperate. Antony realized he'd have to do this on his own. He gripped his sword and plunged it into his ribs failing to pierce his heart. Antony bled out onto the palace floor but was still conscious when a few of Cleopatra Servants were said to have found him. They delivered stunning News Cleopatra was still alive. Earlier news of her death was ally and some believe it was one told by Cleopatra herself her critics believe it was because she struck a deal with Octavian and needed antony out of the picture. Her champions insisted that she hoped Antony would escape and save himself. If he had nothing left to fight for either way for a dying Mark Antony, it didn't matter he loved Cleopatra and he wanted to spend his final moments by her side Mark Antony died in his lover's arms on. August. I thirty B C E. Several days later, Cleopatra Actually did die by suicide to avoid Octavian Wrath. Antony and Cleopatra. Deaths were the tragic conclusion to an epic romance but there are questions about the story's validity. Some historians believe the lovers were actually murdered by Octavian Forces Antony's men did betray him and one theory is that a deserter killed him to curry favor with Octavian similarly Greek and Roman historians were responsible for popularizing the idea that Cleopatra died by suicide while Octavian held her captive it's not inconceivable that Octavian took her out instead which would make. Antony and Cleopatra's deaths to of history's most famous unsolved murders regardless of how it happened. There's no doubt that the battle of Alexandria and Mark Antony's ensuing death changed the world forever Octavian conquered Egypt renamed himself Augustus and became the first true emperor of Rome if Antony and Cleopatra had survived history of Rome and the world might have played out quite differently. We'll never know what that world would have looked like. But history will always remember how hard mark. Antony. To make it a reality. Crime, track the ups and downs of the investigation, and ultimately witnessed the closure of seemingly unthinkable case I'm already hooked. Not Every story has a happy ending, but at least have an ending follow solved murders, true crime mysteries free and only on spotify. Now back to the story. On June seventeenth, Nineteen thirty nine convicted kidnapper, murderer and fief oil wedeman was publicly executed in the streets of Versailles, France and the crowds that gathered to watch seemed to revel in his death. My guest host Alistair is GonNa. Take over from here to discuss the context surrounding the event. Thanks Vanessa. The execution of Oregon Wedeman made history the not because of Wedeman or his crimes. Yes wedeman was a killer and thief, and allegedly he expressed little remorse for his crimes. Save the killing of twenty two year old dancer Zhang Dacoven most likely because that case. He hadn't had a gun to distance himself from his victim. He was forced to strangle her with his bare hands, but morality and regrets aside if we were to rank history's most notorious killers, Oregon, wedeman wouldn't be likely to make the list. What made the execution so monumental was the Bob Barrick reaction of the public. Amidst the crowd, the Catholic, that day was a seventeen year old Christopher Lee. The young Brits attended with a friend of his family. Who happens to be a journalist. Later in life he would star in such blockbuster films as Dracula Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings. But he never got the very real drama of the Wedeman execution. According to him, he didn't watch the blade full. He turned his head away just in time. More than anything. He remembered the reaction of the crowd. Their energy and unrest, pal fervor rushed to his body. That and the sound of the Guillotine when it fell. Previously old death sentences took place before the sun was up before people were out on the streets, and it was difficult to take photographs in such low lighting. It was easy to metaphorically sweet the event under the rug and go about the day. But given the circumstances, the beheading was not only photographed. But, it was filmed as well. and. Just like that. The darkness of Human Nature was dragged out into the light reflected in both the crime, the criminal and the voyeurs who sought out his slaughter. The President Franz. Albert, Lebron was horrified by the historical nature of the proceedings. He did the reaction of the international press and rightfully, so the story got picked up by publications across the globe, including the New York Times afterward Lebron placed a ban on public executions in France. That said the death penalty wasn't abolished until Nineteen eighty-one. In fact Guillotine would stay operational for decades after Wedeman. The last time one was used was on September tenth nineteen seventy, seven. Foot all those years. It was just neatly tucked away, so nobody would have to bear witness out of sight out of mind. Supposedly, it was more civil that way. I'm Vanessa Richardson. Thanks again Alistair for joining me today. Thanks for having me. You can find my podcast. "Her understandably furious and indignant demeanor throughout the trial and a wind storm that hit Connecticut on the day of her death. The weather event was likely a free coincidence, but to the puritans it seemed to corroborate the fact that they had killed the woman with unholy powers. The second source on the trial is John. Hale years after the execution, he recounted Margaret Story in his book, a modest and quarry into the nature of witchcraft. Hale who was twelve years old at the time of the execution described how Jones neighbors tried to persuade her to repent on the day of her execution. His account also provides a possible explanation for why she was accused in the first place. He wrote she was supposed partly because that after some angry words passing between her and her neighbors, some mischief befell such neighbors in their creatures. Hale did not specify the content of his argument between neighbors, or what exactly happened to the livestock, but it is plausible that superstitious colonists want to see Margaret Jones punished for seemingly witching their animals. She wasn't the only one to face charges and conviction on such flimsy accusations in the roughly fifteen years following her death, twelve more women, and two men would be executed for witchcraft in New England. Meanwhile Margaret's husband Thomas Jones was released from prison, following his wife's execution, but his reputation was permanently tarnished, so he attempted to sail to Barbados aboard the ship welcome. Governor winthrop's Journal mentions that welcome was unable to sail due to being unbalanced in the relatively calm water, a nineteenth century account points out that on this ship of three hundred tonnes were eighty horses. These caused the vessel to roll considerably perhaps heavily, which two persons of any see experience would have been no miracle. However, the crew learned there was an accused witch on board, so the blame fell on Thomas. He was arrested and taken ashore at which point the ship righted itself. What became of Thomas Jones afterward has been lost to history. John Hale would be ordained as a pastor in the sixteen sixties and preached in Beverly Massachusetts a settlement that formally separated from Salem Massachusetts in sixteen sixty eight. During the notorious Salem, witch trials of sixteen, Ninety two hale was a witness at the trials and executions of a number of accused witches in November sixteen to his second wife became one of the accused causing him to rethink his support of the courts. It's widely said that this accusation began to turn public opinion around and eventually helped expose the Salem witch trials for the injustice that they were two years after his death hails book on witchcraft was published in which he proposed an alternate theory about the hysteria that surrounded Salem at the time. This theory held that demons impersonated the accused witches in front of witnesses, committing acts of evil. That would condemn innocent people to hang. Tellingly this line of thinking allows both the accusers, and the accused to be correct, this puritan double think would allow A. Man Like hail to believe his wife was innocent, while at the same time, protecting him from the thought that men he knew and respected had slaughtered innocent people. Thanks for listening to today in true crime, I'm Vanessa Richardson to learn more about which trials in seventeenth century new.
