"Added a couple of veterans signing Luke voigt and Tyler naquin to minor league contracts, we got a surprising number about the Milwaukee Brewers from last year. It absolutely shocked me when I saw this. We'll be talking about that with Sarah Lang's. The rangers, Josh young, is preparing what will be likely his first full season in the big leagues, of course, the rangers are a team of stars like a Jacob de Grom, they got Corey Seager that got Marcus Simeon, Josh young is someone who gave me an impact right away. He talked about preparing for the upcoming season. My little mantra right now is like leave no doubt to myself to anybody else. Just go out there and play the best baseball I can. Not peaking too early. I think is a big thing. Last year I said I peaked in January. To just try to build up through camp and be ready to go for the season. I didn't crush it in the out season and hit 7000 balls a day. But coming in, just making sure I feel good every day with whether that's what the routine BP just having small winds trying to find the bottom side part of the baseball that day. I'm not having any sloppy pads that kind of stuff just come in from being intentional with my work. He'd be a candidate for a big breakout season today. I'm going to ask Carl about major candidates for breakouts and also we're going to throw some over unders at wind totals that were getting from a bookie in Las Vegas. Taylor, what else you got? Buster, not the most uplifting topic, but yesterday in the college game day podcast ree Davis and Pete family talked to Alabama's athletic director Greg Byrne about the situation with the basketball team, a young woman being gunned down allegedly by someone on the team, not a great situation, not uplifting at all, but a deftly handled interview and you might have seen it on SportsCenter or any of our channel. "I didn't watch a lot of giant games. Has shown some one year he's pretty great in the next year. He's not. He's due to be great this year, so maybe that's just the Giants wearing off on him. There are some guys that I think could grab a spot in camp identity Duffy is in camp. His name I haven't heard in a while. But yeah, if it were me, I would love to see them go out and bring back more or Zach britton is still a free agent, maybe bring him in. I think they could really use one more guy that is reliable and kind of just can tie it all together. So we talked about the starting pitching is the strong suit. The weakness would be the lineup and it was the weakness and they didn't do a whole lot to address that. I believe they didn't bring in anyone on a major league contract and he hit her right. So they're kind of banking on the same guys getting better, a full season of Josh young, et cetera. So maybe we can talk about the high point first because the issue was, well, there were multiple issues, maybe. But they had a low on base percentage. They had the 6th lowest on base percentage of any team last year. But they did have a breakout in the real bright spot was Nathaniel Lowe, who was on a rate basis at least the second best hitter in baseball behind Darren judge in the second half of last season. Now that was with a 400 plus babbitt, but what was the cause cited for how he suddenly got so great and I guess that would have some bearing on whether you can expect it to continue. Yeah, it was so it took me I've been doing this now 7 years to learn this hidden baseball secret and I am about to make it public for everyone on this podcast, which is to get hits. You have to swing the bat. And that is something that he just didn't really do a whole lot of. He had a lot of call third strikes. I really saw that being funnier than it was than it was. And then I said it and that was not my that was not my best work. You had a lot of call third strikes the year before. And they encouraged him last year to actually get that off of his shoulder swing. You have a good eye. You're not going to just chase a bunch. So get out there and do it, man. And we saw the results. So if it was just a mindset thing, like you said, it's about it was really high in the second half. Is he going to hit 300 again? I don't know. Maybe there's something to be said for this being the second year of a new mindset, maybe he gets more comfortable with it and he's even better. Or maybe he just reverts back to has a stretch where he's uncomfortable and reverts back to being very passive again. I think all on the table. But yeah, just cause to believe that it could be sustainable. Just because it really was more of an approach and mindset thing like swinging a good pitch is don't just take them to take them. So I think there's, I would say cautious cautiously optimistic on my part. The guy who you probably don't need to tell to swing and who I just Levi, I can't figure out if I believe it. So I want to know if you believe it. Okay. And that's a dos Garcia who, you know, like you see strikes out like 28% of the time or didn't 2022, but he still managed to one 12 WRC plus, he hit 27 home runs, put up like four wins by our version of war and it was a good base runner and you look at a guy who you might invite to be a little more discerning and think is this going to stick and I don't know. So you tell me, what are your what are your expectations for adela's Garcia this year? Oh man. Rude question. I've already out of myself as a 70 year old. So you guys want to hear a word that you're going to hate that I think that I'm just I'm just cringing at myself for because I'm about to say this word. Do you either of you believe in clutch? I'm persuadable. Because this may have just been pure luck. I am fully aware this might have been pure luck. There were so many times last year, and this is weird for a team that lost a lot of one run games. Where he would come up late in the ball game, it's a clutch moment and I just feel like I'm swearing in front of my parents every time I say the word clutch on a fan cross podcast. And he would come through, whether it be a home run or a big RBI single or even some of his walks came in very high pressure situations where the team could really use a lot. And I think that probably if again, not having the numbers in front of me, I would imagine that contributed to some of his high war for a guy with such high strikeout numbers. One thing that he did better last year than the year before is he sort of maintains his conditioning, which is the year before he was just such a all out player every day, every play he was just like smashing into walls and going a hundred miles an hour last year he was a little bit better at like rein it in. You don't have to crash into a wall and a 7 run ball game like you made the team, you're good. And was able to sort of sustain his performance a little deeper into the year. Absolutely the chase is a problem. It's always been a problem. But I think there's a place in a lineup for a guy like that. And I don't know if it's your number four hitter, but for the guy that can play solid defense, had like canon arm, good speed, goodness runner, and has a tendency to come up big and close in late moments. Like I think you just sort of pay for that with the currency of strikeouts and go, that's just, you can't take away his aggression, otherwise you're going to sort of start to lose some of these other things that he does well. You can't build a whole team out of a Dolly Garcia. But can you have one Adele's Garcia on your team? I think you can. And if you're not relying on him to be dug eye, then yeah, I think he could be a valuable part of a lineup. Well, first of all, I think it's fine to utter the C word on a fan graphs podcast. It's okay. In fact, there's a stat called clutch on the fangraphs website and at the least Garcia was in the top 20 in that last year. So it's backed up by the stats. Good. I'm glad I don't look like an idiot. Yeah, I don't think that was why his war was so high, but it adds some extra value. The only question is is that a repeatable feat, right? Because his clutch was negative in 2021, so I don't know whether that's something he can continue to do, but. Beyond that, I wanted to ask about the two big additions last year, semi and in secret. Now started the year just hitting horrendously and then right at the ship and finished very strong. Seeker had a pretty good year. I guess it was a down year for him, but he has been often cited as the number one candidate to be helped by the new positioning rules, right?

Well, you know, it's really interesting as we've been talking all week about this Santa Claus rally, and right now it's literally on for the last 5 trading days of 2022. It's going to be interesting to see what the first two days of course of 2023 bring. Now typically, when you have a Santa Claus rally that does happen, it means that the next year is going to be higher when it doesn't happen. It's going to be lower. But of course we had one last year and that really didn't work out. So right now we have the S&P 500 down 7 tenths of 1% the NASDAQ down a little bit more down 1%. This is yields are higher volumes are low and of course the big news on the year is the down year, the bear market for the S&P 500 essentially down 19 .8% thereabouts. The NASDAQ 100 down even more. And yields climbing, so nowhere to hide bonds lower to. How people positioned. Volatility are options expert as well. How are people been looking towards position themselves into new year? Well, you know, it's really interesting, Caroline, in terms of the vix, something that's been baffling to folks all year long is that it's so low right now. In fact, it's a 21 handle. It's almost at 22. But the number one explanation for that is that institutional money, they're not as long as they would be, so they don't have to hedge. Now, is that true? It's hard to know, but it's an interesting explanation. The Vic's hanging right onto the bottom of its range. If it should shoot back higher, probably toward 35 or so, which would suggest the new year could start with a sell off. On the other hand, maybe that range breaks and maybe the bulls step in for stocks. The S&P 500 energy sector index up 58% this year, wow. It's incredible. It's incredible, especially given the fact that it was up 50% the year before. And you know what? Yes. So we have now we have the energy sector over two years, a double, I think I don't know that it's considered to be as sleepy sector because if it is actually technically a growth sector, but who knew that that could happen? And I think that's a lot having to do with mega cap tech really falling apart down more than 40%. So folks wanting somewhere somewhere to go. What really stands out to me about the commodity complex in 2022, it's hired. The Bloomberg commodity index is higher, oil is up about 15%. I believe natural gas is higher. On the other hand, weed is up a little bit too. On the other hand, you have some of the metals lower, including copper. So a real divergent message there. And the reason that it stands out is, of course, we have furs around a demand recession. We also have the Bloomberg dollar index higher. So it's not intuitive that you would have commodities higher. Those are risk assets. So you have this divergence between risk assets of stocks and commodities. What's 2023 delivering? Fascinating the correlations, also fascinating course, the push in the pools of the global economy that does all this to whether or not we see commodities get a bit particularly in the China reopening. We thank Abigail to do little and we dig in a little bit more into the commodity space. Now, on Josh young, chief investment officer, a beast and interests, of course, you're focused on all on gas and public equities in particular. Josh just talked to us about in particular, the China reopening story. It sort of got everyone scratching their heads in the immediate focus. It feels that everyone's a little bit nervous. We're worried about the spread of COVID and how they're going to manage the short term. But in the longer term, does this mean that commodities could outperform once again? Yeah, I mean, I think if you define longer term in terms of more than the next two or three months, it looks great. It looks like China is setting a target for a really high return in terms of flights and we're starting to see congestion essentially traffic on the streets in big cities. Start to rebound in cities as they're on the tail end of their COVID wave. So yeah, I think it looks great from a short to medium term perspective. And as China turns back on, they also start to turn back on oil demand in other east and Southeast Asian countries. And so there could be a step up in terms of multiple millions of barrels a day of demand relative to where we've been over the last few months. Josh, you're based in Houston, as I recall. You know, you've got the energy stocks up almost 60% year to date. How good is life in Houston right now? So it's interesting employments actually not up that much in the oil and gas space. Capital expenditures are not up that much in the oil and gas phase. And the small cap stocks have lagged materially, unlike in past recoveries. So what it's setting up for is, even though those stocks are up a lot from their lows, it's setting up for a multiyear bull market where we could see maybe XLE and sort of the other large and majors don't have as much upside here after their significant outperformance, but the small caps and oil services stocks. I mean, there's real potential there. And there's also a real potential for the revitalization of Texas and Houston. I mean, we're doing great, but there's real, it's not the same as it was in the sort of 2010 to 2014 time frame where Houston was booming. And a lot of that, of course, has to do with federal policy making has to do with a pivot in terms of this economy, trying to focus in on climate change. There as well. How much are we likely to see the smaller caps that you say in particular, maybe start to turn on again? Maybe we start to see all output increasing a little bit more in the United States because that has been this interesting tension between the oil producers in the United States and indeed the U.S. government. Yeah, I think we need much higher oil prices to get oil production growth to be anywhere close to where people were expecting. So coming into this year, we expected oil production to grow by a few 100,000 barrels a day, and the consensus was, I think it was 1.2 million barrels a day. That consensus has come down a lot and we've gotten production a lot closer to our expectation. And so what I think is actually going to drive the small

Here's What We're Watching During Quarantine

"I've had for years box. Dvd set that celebrates the Chicago Bulls six championships in the nineteen nineties. The title is NBA Dynasty Series Chicago Bulls Real quick takeaways couple takeaways Scottie. Pippen totally underrated. I I mean. I know he's considered a legend and one of the top fifty basketball players all time. But but he's even better than that as far as the goat discussion. Greatest of all time between Jordan and Lebron James. All right I conceded. I think it was a year or so ago that Lebron has probably taken that title. I'm more than willing to be argued that I'm more than willing to be argued wrong as a Chicagoan but one thing is for sure after going through some of these. Dvd's Jordan is so much more fun to watch. I mean he just. He spent so much time doing beautiful things. High up in the air way above Lebron's had would have been so That's just a blast to watch now. You can't this is kind of a sneaky. Pick you can't stream this. Dvd set so. I'll take this occasion as an excuse to mentioned that. Espn's ten part Michael Jordan Doc. The last eight they move that up it was gonNA come out on June nineteenth. Yup the release date is April nineteenth. So obviously I can't wait for that listeners. I can maybe loan you my bulls box set because it isn't streaming but otherwise just look for the last dance this weekend on ESPN. I will be watching it. Yeah I have not seen the set that you are watching but I cannot wait for Sunday night. When the ten part doc starts it's been this mythical thing that's been rumored to be in production or potentially production for some time new house coming out and ESPN wisely bumping that up. I think it's something that a lot of people just like us are going to be watching my number three these fall under the category of blind spots and in this case there is a specific hook to Josh. Though it wasn't by design all explain it's my unofficial slash official. Bruce SURTEES MARATHON. So one day. I realize I'm kind of running out of options in terms of things that are really hooking me on net flicks and I know that there are some things I should get to real cinematic blind spots that have been mentioned on the show over the years that I feel regret about but they just seem heavy. I'm not ready for it yet. I need stuff. That's under two hours. I can knock it out and I needed to be reasonably entertaining but I do still WanNa feel like I'm getting some homework done. I do still want to feel like I've crossed something off my list that I felt for some time that I needed to get to so I went over to Amazon prime. And one of the things that popped up happen to be dirty Harry the first dirty Harry movie with Clint. Eastwood Don Siegel directed and right away. I realized how stylishly shot it was and so after I watched it I looked up who the DP was and I see that. It's Bruce Surtees. I think yeah I know that name. I can't really tell you what else he's done. I don't know much about his history's legacy at all but that is a name I have heard and oh I'll just file that away okay. So what's next? Couple of days later I go back to prime one of the film's POPs up. Lennie the Bob. Fosse directed film about Lenny. Bruce and that really is one for me. I've always been ashamed because I adore. Is You know all that jazz. Fosse's film I like cabaret quite a bit as well and in the TV series Fossey Verdon some of the making of Lenny POPs up in that TV series it. Of course POPs up in all that jazz as well. A lot of cutting to scenes of the fosse alter Ego Joe Gideon cutting the movie. That would become lenny so it was kind of just been a joke for me that I've never watched this film. I decide I'm going to sit. And Watch Lenny and. I'm watching the credits. And whose name POPs up is responsible for the Black and white cinematography. It's Bruce Thirty so then decide okay. Well this is just too convenient too much of a coincidence. We're going to make this happen and I'll give you just a little bit of background on him. Is He a name? That's familiar to you at all Josh. Young familiar with the name. I don't think I would have been able to identify any of his movies though right so he got his start as a camera. Operator working with Don Siegel and especially on Siegel and Clint Eastwood Films in the late. Nineteen sixty so movies like two mules for sister Sarah and Cubans Bluff and then his first role as a cinematographer. As the director of photography was Nineteen. Seventy-one it was the beguiled so that Seagal Directing Eastwood and then play misty for me followed that where he was working with eastward again but this time Eastwood as director that was his debut he died in twenty twelve and if you look at his. Imdb the early two thousands in the nineties were not good to surtees out of maybe twenty. Titles there's not one that really stands out as essential viewing and even at the end of the eighties. The decade closed for surtees with rat boy back to the beach and licensed to drive in the eighties for him was otherwise filled with a lot of eastwood's stuff prior to that so movies like Fire Fox and tight rope and sudden impact even honky. Tonk man his heyday really was the nineteen seventies which brought me to night moves. This is an Arthur Penn. Early Bleak Neo Noir starring Gene Hackman as a former football player turned disillusioned private. I would other type of private. I is there in the seventies and it's all set within the movie business so it's reflexive to in the mode of Altman's the long goodbye and then the one I most recently watched was another Eastwood blindspot. Which is Pale writer?
