Tatum, Brown help Celtics escape with 121-116 win over Spurs

"Jayson Tatum drained a tie breaking jumper with 33 seconds left before the Celtic secured their 6th win in 8 games. One 21 one 16 at San Antonio. Tatum finished with 34 points and helped Boston prevail after wasting an 11 point lead in the second half. Jalen Brown had 29 points as he and Tatum combined to make 25 of 52 shots. San Antonio had 8 players scoring double figures, including 18 points apiece from Josh Richardson, Zach Collins and Trey Jones, San Antonio never led, but remained close after opening the second half on a 13 three run. "Whether it's at the trade deadline or just overall figuring out their roster to fix what's going on because the bench shouldn't come in and eventually see myself as though they're going to ruin your lead in a game. It feels as though that second unit needs one more at least one more piece, a guy that they can count on and rely on that can either give them consistent offense or a significant presence defensively. But when you look at the way that starting 5 is defended, it's clear that you want to have guys around them that compliment what they do. And because they're playing such elite level defense, the to me, it makes sense. The commissioner wisdom says that they need another guy who can get buckets. And as Gary mentioned earlier, we'll talk a little more trade deadline. But the more I watch this team play, the clearer it becomes to me that they need another score. It doesn't have to be a big, it doesn't have to be a wing. It needs to be someone who can go out and get buckets. Because right now, the way they're defending, if they're able to defend at that level with the certain consistency for the rest of the season, all they need is a guy one more guy that they can count on a good bucket, 'cause Josh Richardson, I think it's been great off the bench. But I don't feel good about him being my best source of offense on that second unit. I need to have another guy if you're the Celtics who can go out and get buckets. And there are going to be some guys available..

"And then they're going to turn to the kings and try to get somebody in a trade. But in the meantime, he's always getting loud. Now he's talking all about all about Tristan Thompson and the other big. Yeah, I mean, in the meantime, though, they're in a minute's crunch. So they can't keep all these guys happy 'cause it's not feasible in the NBA to run out a lineup of 5 centers. You can't do. It did not look all that great. Bulbul and shooting guard alongside Troy Daniels point guard was not the way to go. So yeah, it just got something's going to have to give their venture. I didn't really fully grasp why they guaranteed Damien Jones contract when they did, so but they didn't. And whatever it is, it's done. Speaking of guarantee contract guarantees, Jalen McDaniels, little hornets becomes fully guaranteed today that'll happen. He's shown enough there for them to fully guarantee Terrence Mann and the clippers they did that early. So that's our already been done. Jabari Parker got a hundred K guaranteed yesterday. There was a little bit of a watch because he's somebody that looked like the Celtics might have moved on from him before he triggered any comment guarantee. And then a couple at the end of the week Alice Johnson from the nets, hundred K guarantee, triggers on Friday and Anthony tall of our of the 76ers comes really guaranteed. I'm gonna guess Anthony to all of her is gateway by TMI. I don't think he's gonna make it to that date. That is my guess. They're just Philly's Phillies over the tax and that'll give them a little more wiggle room if they move, move on from toliver. But yeah, so those are just some things to keep an eye on here. It's a lot of teams filling out their camp rosters now over the next few weeks. That's what will happen. So we'll start to see a bunch of guys when you and I tweet about them. We'll get the who, responses. But these guys are guys who are going to go to camp. And most of these deals will be designed around trying to get guys to the G league. Right, yeah. And that's what we're going to see happen with a lot of the moves that take place in the next few weeks here. So I think that about wraps everything up. When we went through a lot, had a puppy appearance and pretty soon we're going to start our team breakdowns as well. Yeah, yeah, reviews previews. We don't know what we call them, but they're both. So we'll start in on those too. And then we've got a lot of cool stuff planned for you guys. Going right up to the season. We're going to continue to go in season as well. Trevor and I are working with some of our partners to brainstorm ideas and all sorts of fun stuff. But if you guys, if there's things you really want to know about or see us do and those kinds of things drop it in the comments because we do check those out. We are happy to steal your idea and give you all the credit that you deserve on the show if you are the one who kicks us an idea that we have not already thought of. We're happy to give you a shout out on the show. That's the extent of what you're getting. Out of us. Maybe someday we'll have a front office goodie bags and swag..

"It's a little bit. It's a little late in this kind of transaction period. And I'm not sure what teams are going to be interested at this stage. A lot of guys that, you know, a lot of guys are locked up at this point because they can't be traded until December 15th. So that's going to limit your options. But the report also suggested that, look, Jeremy lamb he had a lot of injury issues last season. So a lot of teams are saying, well, we're interested, but we want to wait and see if he's healthy for. So maybe this is a guy just to keep an eye on and we'll see him moved midseason. Yeah, he got back about Blake January. He came back, so when he came back from that injury, with the pacers after in 2020, he tore his ACL. So about a year later, which that's roughly the going time frame for an ACL injury. And yeah, he was a little rough last year. So we'll see where he looks better this year. My guess is this is when we talk about this a lot. Who does this benefit to put this out there? And I think this is one that benefits both the pacers and Jeremy lamb because it starts saying like, hey, there's teams who want them. I think the article which was by J Michael of the Indy star who has proven to be pretty well connected to the pacers and their players. He said the Lakers had reached out, makes sense, right? Now was that the Lakers reached out and the end of July when they had built their bench. Yeah, or was that recent? Because it also he makes $10.5 million. How do the leakers get there? That's a little odd. But he also mentioned Charlotte hornets where lamb had played previous. They could actually maybe use another wing. Score, they don't have a lot of guys in that role where the pacers do. I mean, you mentioned levert and Chris duarte, but they signed toward Craig. They still have Justin holiday on that team. TJ Warren still plays quite a bit at the three for them. So that's a team that's they've got an awful lot of guys who play that same position. So that says to me, I bet lamb gets run early in the year as a duarte is transitioning into the NBA and lamb is showcased for a move down the line. That's my guess is how that one plays out. So he's going to be kind of the training wheels or whatever for Chris duarte to come in and he missed him. You missed it. You could have done with he's gonna be the sacrificial lamb for Christopher today. Oh man. I've got Keith. I have too much football on my brain. I was trying to get to Andy Dalton and Justin Fields somehow. I was trying to make that connection and then oh man. I went for the easy one man. I'm too tired after putting puppy duty and being up all night with this guy every few hours to make long ones. I went for the simple one. That one was definitely better. And it was sitting right in front of me like I said, I have too much fantasy football on the brain. I love it..

"And you mentioned they didn't have a front of the bench block ball. So it's hard to go from being a player to a coach in the same locker. It's very hard. Because instant we talked about this with you, Donna's has a mom, one other episode. The relationship just changes immediately. You're not you're not in the locker room with them like that anymore. You're not, hey, no, you're not doing the dinners, you're not doing that stuff anymore. So it's just very different. And that becomes a little bit awkward. So yeah, I think for him to go with a guy. He's familiar with Jason Kidd to a team where I think he can really help out guys like Luca, even porzingis and those kind of guys. I think he's got just a perspective. He can kind of give because I think what Jared Dudley to what gets missed is he at one point looked like he was done in the NBA, early in his career, and then he caught on with the suns. And rebuilt his body, got himself in a really good shape. And then it looked like, again, a few years later, like he was going to be done. And then he turned into this guy that everybody wanted to sign to be on their bench at the end of the year. So and I get it from the Lakers perspective. I think if they had more definite depth that they knew 100% was going to be fine, you can give him your 14th or 15th roster spot. I think they need to look at guys who just you need to be certain they can play 50, 60 games if you need them to. And I'm not sure sold that that's Dudley at this point in his career. But like you said, he's been looking to make this transition for a while. So this is great. And I bet he is either going to be a head coach within four or 5 years, or he's going to transition to running someone's moving his way up the front office ladder. He has him on that side. He's talked about how he either wanted to be in the coaching tree and wanted to go that route. Or he owns someone to keep his option open to be a GM. If he can hear our little guy, I didn't hear a little guy Tatum, is he he's letting his presence be known here? My wife just got home and he's one of the other ones started. So he's like, oh, we're barking. I'm gonna do that too. So he's a very deadly coaching. Whatever the big dogs do, he wants to do too. So he's letting him fly. But yeah. Let's go to. I guess there was a little bit of a trade rumor coming on here. Jeremy lamb, potentially on the move. Yeah, the Indiana Pacers. $10.5 million expiring contract that's coming season. They brought in Chris duarte. They already have Karis levert in there. So question in terms of how many minutes are really there in pawnee to give to give him so it makes a lot of sense. I always have to. I have to. I love that show too much to not reference that. That's so good. But yeah, I mean, look, it makes sense for them to move him..

"Coming out. And this factor in a rob Williams too of like, okay, rob Williams is going to be starting at center. I think we're that's a safe, guess. Richardson, we assume he's coming off the bench. But dickers a case to be made to split up him intruder and have shorter do that and then you have Richardson and smart as you're starting backcourt and that's probably one of the best defensive backwards in the MBA period. If you go with that in terms of on ball defense and or are they going to go big without at the fork and rob at the 5 and then play Brown and tame or the two and the three and just hopefully save the wear and tear in those guys to start to? Yeah. I hope not. I like that for there was even reports the shooter was okay with coming off the bench, right? Yeah. I can imagine that was promised to him. Right. So I mean, and Richardson, you can say this about pretty much anybody in the NBA, but Richardson is a lot better when he's playing next to the Jays. Yes. I don't think he's the kind of the kind of talent where you want to put him to lead the second unit. He's a much better as a complimentary piece. I would have said the same about fournier before he obviously much better offensively in terms of leading an offensive unit. Even though most of these units are going to have one of the JS out there at all times anyways. But if you're talking about getting what I think the max impact from Richardson, I like Marcus Richardson Jays and rob. Especially as we've said in bernardoni is set a bunch and I trust him that Al Horford can not play the four anymore in the NBA. No, I mean, not against guys that can shoot. Which is there'll be some line of which is bringing me much of it. There are some, because there are some big lineups in the east that you could say where the nicks are obviously yawns, you can put out on a Yanis for ten, 15 minutes a game. But yeah, they're only that's not a winning combination. We saw last year, the double bank in general is just not going to get the job done most days. Right. So I think Richardson where you can say to him, okay, you're going to get you're going to get a lot more open looks, obviously, when you're out there with the J's, you are the guy you and Marcus, but when it comes to maybe covering some different wings, you can step up at times and take some of the pressure off the Jays. So they don't have to expend full energy on defense while also carrying the offense. And I just think that he is best served in the Celtics are best served with him in the starting lineup. Yeah. Well, a week a month away from training, I should say excuse me. So that will be something to keep an eye on that front. "At least lock you in for above mid level money here. And so we don't have to take that risk of you having a bad year or whatever. And then going to Dennis shooter out. I just need to say maybe maybe he talked to Dennis after it became officially like, oh, wait. For one more year. Right. Dennis is like, what's your advice? Like, sign the extension, whatever they put in front of you. And then again, when you look at the south side of it, it's like, should be a good value contract. I mean, I guess we can talk about that part of it first. Josh Richardson had another year of $12 million. Sure. Even if it's the worst, even as you're like last year, like, that's fine. That's not going to hurt you. Right. He is healthy. He can eat some minutes. Which isn't the nicest thing again. You need some minutes. But I just think if you're really, if you're going to talk about where the Celtics are right now, just in their grand plan, where maybe some of these guys could be thinking, okay, I'm just going to be a conduit to Bradley Beal. Could be rob, it could be Marcus could be all these guys. And we talked about nee Smith and Pritchard, too. Like, the better I play, that just makes me a more tempting part of whatever package is going to be offered up for Beal at some point. But if you're trying, and I think they are trying to get some cohesion, some unity, some real sense of team. And anytime you can just say to a guy, hey, you're going to be here for two years. I mean, anything can happen. But we're locking you in. You're not just a part of this team for one year to get yours and see what you can get on the market. You're part of this. So let's start building for this year and next year together. And if you can get one more guy on board in that sort of on that goal, I think that's good for the locker room. Yeah, that's a good point. I think the distraction element of being in a contractor hasn't been talked about a lot, but I do think with how things turned out last year and again how the team was viewed the Kyrie stuff around the league or the Celtics looking like a team taking care of their guys. Is not bad for business, I would say from afar. Even if they have other motivations on top of it, but being like, yeah, Marcus and rob have put in the work. We really liked them a lot. We're going to take care of them. Josh Richardson. Yeah, you want to stay for next year for a slight raise? Yeah, we'll take care of you too..

"Yes, I do very well. I was thinking that. If there was ever a time that we could have reached out to them because there is a common theme recently in Celtics where all this Brad Stevens and his extends his Celtics enhancement pills. We had Marcus smart last week. Rob Williams, Richardson. Everyone's getting extended. I was texting with a friend of the show and freaking co host, ran Brandon Joni to see if there is any are there any other Celtics left on the roster, eligible to be extended? And so guess what Bruno Fernando, you're up. The four year $9 extension is coming your way in mirror hours now. But it is. Maybe Brad used all his pills. That's true. Listen, you gotta see a doctor if he is too many. So let's slow down there. But yeah, so three, three extensions here in the past week. We already talked about Marcus last week. But I'll leave it to you. Where would you want to start with rob Williams or the Josh Richardson? Rob is, I think a little bit more exciting. I think the ceiling is higher and aerobic extension. It's a little bit more. I mean, there's a lot to unpack. I read your story in mass live about the Richardson extension where everyone's sort of figuring out what to make of it. But are the details out yet on rob? They are another way. They are not. So I will start with this. I would be shocked. If the $54 million is guaranteed. And I'll start with this. I will tell you that it is not. Oh. I don't know if we call a call that exclusive. That's absolutely. I don't report this kind of thing. It's not fully Gary. It's from what I hear. I have a winning place in this game, yes. But according to winning press play sources, I have heard that it is not fully guaranteed. I'm not follow-up on that then. Right. To check out, but yeah, again, that is not a shocking development. So with that involved, if the money is not guaranteed as we both suspect or have heard, then there's little to dislike about this deal. Again, once you kind of went down that road if Marcus smart, then like the train has left the station, so why not? Yeah, and okay, like I said, a million times. If he plays, it's a win. It's undeniably a win. If he plays the way he did last year for that number. Right? And let's say he plays more games that he's hurt a little less often. If he puts up that sort of production for 13 and a half a year, that is pretty solid value. But if we're assuming he's going to continue to develop, he's going to get more comfortable. And if we can assume he would be healthy, it's a home run. Right. And so that there's a long way to go on this run for a guy who's, you.

"Today recording it's august twenty fourth in about one month people are going to be coming to training camp late. September is going to be here really really soon. So all the stuff that we've heard about over the off season the teams that had interest in dame the teams that have interest in simmons. Keep this all in mind over the next six weeks or so because even though things are quiet today training camp is right around the corner. It's coming fast. It's coming fast. So this stuff could accelerate at some point in in about a month once. Training camp does begin. But maybe not maybe daryl morey will be okay with things getting ugly. Because he's waiting for that superstar and damian lillard. I don't know do you think they will. Because they should've last year and they ended up with the number one seed gif you know. What do you mean i mean. That was the thing. All as year was all simmons for hardin simmons for harden simmons for hard. That's all it was everywhere. And simmons was cool with it. But i think things were different than though i really do. I think things were different because he didn't you know. Pass up the dunkin kinda get thrown under the bus by you. Know his co star. Joel alabi in coach and like there wasn't this whole perception from philly fans wanting him gone like they want him out. A lot of sixers fans want him gone today. They don't wanna wait. They want him gone now and then the other side of it is that simmons and clutch also wanna change too so i think the circumstances have changed since he was involved in discussions versus where things are today dramatically different couple of quick things where we get out of here. The celtics are going to retire. Kevin garnett's number now. How long was he there now. Very laws seven years. Only some my head. I thought they won right when he got there right years. Six years of boston below. I thought at six years okay longer than i thought Six years only six years though..

"Right frankly they had to sit gilders alexander. They lost games last year. They were catching teams. Remember we got about halfway through the season. it's like why are they good. They're they're almost five hundred rating was horrible but at one point it's still it's still boggles my mind. How such a poor net rating and yet at one point they were near five hundred. Yes it's crazy like they were at one point. This season ended the season. They were nineteen twenty four at one point on march twenty second midway through the year and then they want three games the rest of the season. They went three and twenty six after that. Oh nineteen twenty four other news that we need to get to josh. Richardson got an extension with the boston. Celtics another move in brad stevens off He has he has signed You know he made the trade for al horford. He signed marcus smart as extension. He signed robert williams the time lord to his extension and then yesterday signed josh richardson to his extension. What do you think. And what do you think about brad. Stevens first off season. There's two ways to look at the richardson. Smart if everything. They've done this offseason one. These are some solid players right. Getting josh richardson locked up for an extra season. If you can get back to the guy that we last on miami before we started changing teams things kind of fell off for him. Then you got a good player two way player on your roster marcus smart at a you know a pretty fair dollar value annually williams. It's a big. If but if robert williams can stay healthy that's a great contract for the team but it's hard not to look at some of these that are being made by the celtics and not think about the fact that they still wanna make a big move and bradley. Beal and jason tatum. That relationship is very real if beal were to want to leave washington either during the season or next offseason and a sign and trade. Al horford plus josh. Richardson equals the new bradley. Beal max contract the following summer in a sign and trade so for the celtics..

"And your kids the great challenge and all outside absolutely not the great challenge. I've seen these people fall on their face and whatnot online. But i'm unaware as it become a wave. Were tons of people doing this. I saw one video of the guy smashing his face. I was like yeah. I understand thank you. I've no interest in having a permanent back damage for the rest of my life breaking her arm doing it. So thank you. i'm gonna watch the videos from afar and chuckled to myself. Yeah no no craig challenges for us. We have reached the quiet time throughout the nba but that interestingly enough there has been a ton of new since we last spoke schedule came out on friday. We saw You know in terms of what. The big games are things that we look out for the best matchup. What's going to be christmas. What they're who's playing at the very end of the year Anything that particularly stood out to you from schedule announcement day i thought. Nba dot com. Had an interesting article that said the schedule commemorating the seventy fifth anniversary with some classic matchups like some anniversary games. That i thought was kind cool. But i you know i. I think this year will be very interesting. They had a week about like some of the nineteen forty six forty seven season three teams. That were active than i mean. I'm sure we'll see some cool stuff. Maybe we'll see class jerseys for weeks like that in december during that week that other stuff on anniversaries as well from you know decades ago i wonder if i haven't let's closely enough to see if there's anniversary games from recent years. Obviously you know like knicks and hawks. Playing on christmas day will get drama with stuff like that. But that's what stuck out to me. I just think it's cool. How have some of those anniversary games. And maybe there'll be some stuff around that on the days of those games. Unsurprisingly the lakers led the way with the total of forty two games on either abc tnt espn or nba tv. Following the lakers were the warriors. So the lakers at forty two games so over half of their games on national television The warriors were forty one brooklyn thirty seven and then those two finals appearance teams one. That won the championship. The milwaukee bucks thirty six now Which is their highest ever by wide margin and then the sons who were hardly ever on national television last year got thirty three of their games on national tv so we will see a ton of the sons on a big stage. Boston also thirty three despite their down season last season They still have a ton of national television games. Other ones The knicks have. I believe i read more national television games this upcoming year with twenty nine than they've had in the last decade combined or something or the last at least five years. Goodbye the clippers. Still on tv twenty seven times.

"Veteran wing Josh Richardson this offseason after stops in Miami, Philadelphia and Dallas and president of basketball Operations brand. Stevens likes him so much. He gave Richardson a contract extension before we've even seen him in a Boston Jersey. It's one year extension so he'll earn nearly $24 million total over the next two seasons. Josh brings a great grit an edge, he can defend several position. Last year was a little bit of an anomaly and how he shot the ball. He's always been good. There are numbers would say that when he gets the open opportunities, he's better obviously the show last year, but he wants to win. Richardson averaged 12 points in 59 games for the Mavericks last year, while shooting 43% overall and 33% from long range. It's fair to wonder, why would a team seeking salary flexibility beyond this season? Do this well remember having multiple trainable mid range salaries on the books? Can help potentially acquire one big money star Adam Kaufman, WBZ Boston's news radio, 12 43, the Subaru retailers of New England all wheel drive traffic on the threes and Kevin Brennan. I'm not sure the exact situation but again. It's been out there for quite a while. And we're talking. "I just don't think it's likely that he'll be worth it. Particularly on this team with this budget and the rest of the players that they have on it. Cuz I mean, at this point I'm Forty-Eight and smart, I don't think are going to be like, one of those. Two guys won't be here next season. Once Richton comes in the door and knowing what the long-term Financial Obligations are off, and what the budget limitations probably are this year so that it's a back-up plan for mobile again. If you leave themselves open, if if Fournier goes out there, if, if the next send, you know, the Mavericks and everything. And it gets their guy that they want. That's not 48. And 48. Might have to come back with his tail between his legs, to the Celtics to sign, or at least figure out a sign-and-trade where the Celtics May net. Something out of it. If I'm going to a team that, you know, doesn't have cap room. But again it for now, it seems like someone's going to step up to the plate and give him what he wants, or maybe. But I still am semi skeptical that even though he's clearly not hurting his paws, with his playing the Olympics. So far, and the Celtics may go out and pay more. Second round picks to make another trade exception. I don't, I don't really know what the value of it is. If they're up against a budget right now. But it's possible, they could. And that that could somehow turn into something, I don't know. And you can have this exact same conversation around Josh. Richardson, you can say, if he has a good season next year, than the year after that, he and smart likely won't be on the team. You won't like they won't be able to have both of them on the team. Yeah. Now he may go out and have a sort of useful but underwhelming year and sort of settle in a being a ten million dollar player. Emily sort of price player where they, they can bring it back. If he goes out and plays really well and win Sixth Man of the Year, which is not out of the question. Like, if he goes back to playing the way that he did in Miami, then he absolutely could be that. Then he might become a player who makes the amount of money that you then can't fit in a pub with both? He and smart. Even if you aren't doing anything like dealer related, so you could have that conversation again you just keep rolling and rolling rolling and there is The time Horizon, all these things are, like the reason the players that I wanted them to go and trade for was somebody who had two or three years left on their deal. And in some ways they are sort of making this like synthetic player of, you know, Evan 48,000 Richardson, Kevin Richardson gives you a year-and-half. So it's in that case, it's again, not the end of the world. There are worse ways that this whole thing could have played out. It's just not a good way that it's played out writes. A c minus instead of a month, if maybe with Richardson coming in in total. But and and again, those same time, things would have happened if they traded for Aaron Gordon then after and Gordon's contract run out you'd have the exact same conversation about..

"I don't expect there to be that offer significant of a breakout but it's not, you know if it's happened before second-year players, third your place and have a big big step forward and sort of change your Calculus on. That would be a welcome change. But yeah, at the moment if you're thinking that you're basically saying, like all of the pics is the only path you have to get into player. It is really hard to trade one right now for for that kind of upgrade. Particularly because I don't think anybody thinks this is like a title team right now. Right? So right. What do you do in their home? If it happens. You know, it's possibility, it wouldn't like stunned me, but it just sort of feels like it would be a little short-sighted at the moment. Even for all that I've been talking about, they should go after Larry Nance's, you walked are Max Weber, they should go after players like that. Just realistically you know in the cold light of day it's like and if you actually shouldn't. So all right, let's look let's start with the, I think the biggest domino here in terms of current free agents and that's M Fournier and the the riding with someone on the raw already, when Josh Richardson was taken in for Thursday, the what's left.

"Okay so i mean it's what area he again supporting. But i don't see san antonio maintaining their record and i am not sold on portland. I think the warriors have a better chance of falling out than portland or the spurs. I think those three teams are the teams that the mavericks would really fighting for and and one of those three would be the team's a fall out. I know portland. Had that nice little run where they were eighteen and ten. I think the record is a little misleading like every year. Any time portland wins. Four games in a row star. Wars portland's always the dark dark before they got willard when the mavericks played them in two thousand eleven they were projected to beat them average portland. I just don't think they're that good. They're sixty four of their last ten. They've four in a row. I think since they beat the mavericks. They've lost four in a row. So yeah golden. State san antonio portland. I can't see denver staying at eighth but you never know like denver's lost a lot of people. Did over the last couple of years and michael porter. Jr. he can put up some stats. But he doesn't impact winning losses when wins and losses. I wouldn't be surprised if they ship porter somewhere Would you want him now. He's too much of a liability on defense. okay yeah. I agree i think the warriors have the biggest chance but i guess i could see the blazers were the spurs pulling up. The spurs are really. I mean they're seventeen twelve. I think they're staying. Might not remain the fifth. See but i think they're staying next This is from accident. Show ten again. What's luca in capeeze. "Is from ads the k. King the question is thoughts on trade options involving powell and bobin i mean i i would prefer for what you're going to get back for bo bon. You're better off. Just keeping them just for his locker room presence. Yeah his friendship with luca his joy. You wouldn't get anything back for him. That would make it were. Yeah well powell. You want to get rid of at this point because i mean no. I don't mean that a main getting ten million dollars a year the next two years. So you got i will take a second round pick for wipe i would take cash Nothing for i will give you cash to take two white powell. I think for the from the mavericks point of view. Having him in the locker room is worth more than a second round pick. It's worth ten million dollars a year. I mean you wanna talk about him contracts. Yeah because he doesn't ever Yeah you know after the achilles just before the achilleas. I hate how people are putting that anecdote asterik. Before the achilles he was a non player in this league. I was like i feel like now all the dwight powell lovers are just using that as an excuse. It's like this is what he was like before. I mean he can't jump for the. But oh god dad now you know whatever whatever i don't want to bash powell again i. I don't think they would get anything for power. I don't think there's any team out interested in him likewise with on. I think you'd better off just keeping them just for his locker room presence. Yeah i don't think either one of them have value. Okay love to get terry rozier for them. But it's not gonna happen. Um next one is from at direct show ten. The question is how much value in a trade do expiring contracts of james johnson and tim hardaway junior have at the nba trade deadline. I mean depends on the team. I know it's no. It does not what i was gonna say. It kind of depends on the team. That is what their decision is. What their plan is for the future. Is that team. That you're trading them to wanting cass base like new york when you did the whole cap dump for them. Yeah they were wanting to sign max guys. They thought because they were new york. They'd be able to do that. So you would have to find the right scenario. I don't know if tim hardaway like has a lot of value like tim. Hardaway's value is for a contending team. Like he would be the final piece that a contending team like the clippers say for example they just need one more schuler warrior or the warriors. Well they're not really contending. But the top near milwaukee. They need one more shooter you know so those kinds of teams. Yes exactly so they would. They would have a wad value for tim hardaway. But if they could guarantee that they're gonna he's gonna resign. Yeah unless you're going win now mode oh yeah so yeah outside of that. I mean it really just kind of depends on the team that you're dealing with because they may have a lot of value depending on the team or they may not have any value basically. It's really just about the record like a a really bad team. Generally doesn't care about cap space because free agent destination. True like the mavericks young. But i mean yeah if if region destination yeah but for the most part aband- bad team is not going to lure a lot of free agents..

"They would beat those teams. I think the mouse would probably lose. Especially if they're like a seventh or eighth seed but it's their best chance of winning. Okay next question. This is from at brent edmonson. What players do you think the mavs trade for to help us now in the future and in the future i don't know if he means like should they trade for or if he means like what's a prediction solicited. I mean it really all depends like we talked about before on the porzingas. If we're gonna assume porzingis not traded and they wanna fill their roster outside of that they have no assets. They're only main asset is jalen brunson so with brunson if another team feels like. He's a starting point guard which was great that the media is starting to hype that up. Because that's just increasing his trade value and there's a team out there that needs a point guard and has yes well but do the cooper's have any pieces that we want so it's got to be a perfect scenario. The team's gotta yeah. I mean i don't know if i'd trade brunson for a thirty two year old walker how old ivanka's and besides if you're gonna keep porzingas ivanka's kinda pointless so you would need wing depth or a secondary playmaker. That's better than brunson and can start. I was talking to a bulls guy this past week and he saw a lot of value in maxime as well as brunson. I think those two kind of had the most value to him so mattress. You maxi for zach levine. You know like it's not like they have a ton of value but just on the mass roster those two guys have the most value. What could you get for. Maxine brunson. I don't think a whole lot. But i don has more value. So what the mavericks can offer. A team is really similar to what they did. When they got porzingis they can offer a young asset. Who's actually better than dennis smith. Who and they can offer space very much of a burn. I think i don't know anyways. So they can offer a young promising player. Yeah and they can offer a whole bunch of cap space with hardaway and james johnson and josh richardson's contracts. You just got to find the perfect scenario. You gotta find the other porzingas..

How Joel Embiid Became An MVP Contender

"Also derek. Last season ended in pretty disappointing. Fashion for philadelphia. That'll do it. The boston celtics move on by defeating the seventy sixers. Four games to nothing. The first ever went wrong in that first round against boston for embiid and the sixers. I think a bunch of things went wrong. First of all. You can't start without saying this. Ben simmons zone. Outside of that sort of what went wrong was wrong with the sixers all year. The team didn't fit well yet. Al horford and josh richardson. Who were tough it's around a post op center and embiid. Richardson shooting for three ended out. They didn't have a real reliable second often times during the series alec. Burks was your secondary options on offense recipe. Brad stevens and the celtics and bead romeo leg for the rookie thinking about double vacates birds. Who can't make them pay. So there is a lot of mistakes that were made roster building and there were missing. Simmons isn't it was a tough series for sure. Can you remind us what the narrative was after that first round exits surrounding joel embiid and his performance. Yeah it was fascinating because on one hand when they came back into the bubble they had spent pretty much those months in between working with you all to get better at handling dull teams and it came out in the bubble in orlando during the seeding games and some of that had started to show and he looked like he was handling double teams better and he came out against the celtics. And i think that he converted back a little bit in terms of struggling with the double team and bead backing down ties gordon hayward on the help and they come up with the steel but he was dominant as an individual score. That was locked off and be. Did it again. Safe focused joel. Fb five of seven. Give him thirteen of his team's thirty one. We'll lifesaver on that. So i think a lot of people looked at you made steps. He did most of what he could do individually. He just didn't have enough help around him. Well that disappointing end to a long season led to a number of changes within the sixers organization. Can you take us through. Some of the moves that philly made in the off season and how they related to unlocking the better performances from joel. Embiid is off the front office. Obviously brought daryl morey To work above. Elton brand and then they brought in doc rivers replace brett brown and then you had some pretty key addition to traded al horford for essentially danny green. And then josh. Richardson for steph curry. And i think those two editions have been pretty big with joel. Because i think if you look either trade you'd say the sixers got the lesser talent but the fit and just having to players in curry and green. Who the other team can't leave has been huge for. Joel shoe autom- double wall and pass. And you miss accomplish you. Miss a lot of shots You just straightening and then you start thinking of all you gotta do everything by yourself. 'cause everybody's not made the shots. Richardson horford they were not only inconsistent shooting. If they are unwilling shooters and they'd hesitate any office. Which is kinda come grinding down to a halt not only is curry making his shots and all these green making his permanent shots. But the ball is moving around the perimeter. Much quicker than it was. So there's more consequential doubling joel embiid than there ever has been monarch got a lot of assists but Ogle gets one us open. Invite double or triple team has a lot of hockey else's shake milton hinton to downtown ten points and ten minutes off the bench make no mistake that play which about drawing the double and then the ball moving east gotta be willing to be content. That the ball's the swing opposite and he's gonna creative for shots teams are now left with a real choice whereas before i think the whole strategy just send you all need help and disguise it a little bit senate in different locations but if you send it frequently enough you're going to confuse joel embiid or the sixers aren't going to have the talent or the players to make him pay. I think that's changed now.

There was also a popular hashtag titled Esports for all that hashtag drove over 5 million views on all videos, but most of them weren't actually any sort of Esports content. So yeah, I don't really know how to tick tocks hashtags work either but hey five billion views incredible for something that has a sports in the title on the actual Esports side as one could expect FaZe Clan Topsy Sports organizations with about four point five million followers on the platform for the corporate Channel SM also has over a million but G2 Team Liquid Cloud 9 and are G are all under a million. Philadelphia 76ers agree to trade Josh Richardson to Dallas Mavericks for Seth Curry, per report

"Today. Just now josh. Richardson was traded by the sixers to the mavericks at a thirty six. Pick with richardson for sets cari and richardson's kind of one of those guys that just happened now according to coach and you know an elder reporters but The tyrod terry moves into this at curry spot into the south carolina. Spot right into but richardson is one of those types of guys. That were sort of talking about here right. I mean like. I think you would want knee smith to grow into that type of role and hopefully get better on defense. Maybe not a guy who was handling a lot for you but can here and there That that would be the long term goal for him. But i'm not so sure that the ball handling ability is there but if it is it's never going to be at a high level he's always going to be a shooter for you and if he can shoot a heck of a lot better than richardson. While being good on defense. That'd be a really nice player but there's a lot of questions though.

Stimulus checks and other coronavirus relief threatened by old technology and rocky government rollout

Few months have gotten saddled with this new totally unprecedented task. Getting all of this money to the people who need it fast. There are all these small banks trying to process millions of loans that they've never dealt with before and their state unemployment offices many of which are running on shoestring budgets sometimes with just a few dozen employees as of last month. These little operations have come a lifeline. For THIRTY SIX MILLION UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS. Hello and welcome to planet money. I'm Stacey Vanik Smith. Ninety five mask and how it became the life saving tool it is today through line from NPR. The podcast where we go back in time to understand the present Kayla Nelson and her husband have been waiting for their unemployment checks for six weeks. Meanwhile Kayla's husband got sick with covid nineteen. Some of her kids have been showing symptoms so she is trying to quarantine people care for people. Cook clean keep the kids doing their schoolwork. Keep everybody inside and on top of that when we called Kayla last week. She told us she's been spending hours on the phone with Indiana's unemployment office every day. Just calling the one eight hundred number which is great. You're just waiting and waiting and waiting and then once you finally get on the phone with them either one they hang up on you. The call is dropped or two. They don't have any information to give you KAYLA. Tried email. Thought maybe that would be faster. Emailed different claim and I only got a response back from one our family. We are really in crisis and I didn't run around where unemployment my name is Josh. Richardson on the Chief of Staff. At the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. We operate the state's unemployment insurance program. Josh has been working there for more than a decade. He was there during the great recession. When things got so bad they had nearly thirty thousand people applying for unemployment in one week so when Indiana announced a statewide shutdown. There's this one thought that went through his head. How do we possibly staff up to process than if it's the people need and the timeframe in which they're going to expect him in need them just a few months ago? Indiana was seeing record low unemployment. The staff was lean but was more than adequate to handle the two thousand odd people filing for unemployment. Every week they had about fifty people answering phones and around two hundred people processing claims but Josh thought if we get up to the great recession high of nearly thirty thousand people a week filing for unemployment. We're not going to be able to handle that with our little staff. And then the claim started coming in three thousand people five thousand people ten thousand people twenty thousand. Josh couldn't believe what he was seeing. And the numbers kept climbing to fifty thousand one hundred thousand people and then it kept climbing was like a hundred and twenty one hundred and thirty one hundred forty one hundred and forty thousand people filing for unemployment in one week. That's almost five times with Josh. Seen during the great recession just realizing that this was just really different than what we were expecting and what we built for hundreds of thousands of people were calling and Josh had fifty people answering phones. He started hiring as fast as he could. But people had to be vetted and trained and in the meantime all of these weird problem started cropping up news reports people saying well. I've been waiting for hours and I was hung up on. And so you. You start to investigate. How in the world are people getting hung up on? Josh looked into it and it turns out a lot of cell phone. Carriers have called time limits. Most of them. I think that we've seen many with four hour hold limits and so if that person on hold for four hours they are on hold for four hours and it's an extraordinarily long time and even all the longer when you've been waiting for four hours into call automatically gets dropped. They're also all these reports of people calling and the number just not working at all turns out. There are actually limits on. How many calls per second one phone line can accept so even when we had the recording to say sorry? We can't answer the phone. The number of calls per second exceeded our ability to connect them with the recording. They were getting more than sixty calls per second in the last eight weeks. Josh's brought on hundreds of people he now has roughly six hundred fifty people working with him. But they're trying to assist six hundred and forty thousand Indiana's who've lost their jobs Josh's whole time is down to around two hours and he says he's working all the time he doesn't take breaks. He says whenever he tries to all he can think about are the people who haven't gotten their money yet. People like Kayla who says her family situation is getting more desperate by the day. We barely have enough to pay the rent and still have money left over to support our family. If we don't get any really. Everybody is dependent on the government right in. My husband never had to depend on the government. We've been working for years so to go from being our own backbone in our own source of income to just waiting. You don't know when it's coming I was I was very like I was at my lowest. Yesterday I was over. I quit was over Josh. Richardson says he and his team are working as fast as they can trying to get money out to the people who so desperately need it still. He says he knows that. For a lot of people people like Kayla not fast enough. We sort of get the. Hey you guys should have been more prepared. You should have seen this coming in. There's no point in arguing that out. All we can do is try to get better.
