"Let's run through You know some of the bigger stories. I honestly it's one of those things where In sports in general really don't have much going on so it's all drama. So i wanted to chat up jay washington. You saw this story Blake pj washington. We're here for you. I mean your college basketball guy. You're a blue blood. We have your back You know. I'm an avid follower of advil. And he needed. He needed someone behind him to just to say like. Pj are we sure here. Are we sure we need. I mean he was losing it. He was down bad on instagram's weekend wanting to see his son. I we need. I just to shout them out because i wanted to give him a hug. You know what. I mean like a pr guy who gives up for them. Obviously not when they commit cry. I'm not talking about that. I'm not talking about like when they're accused of actual. I'm talking about leg a with manipulated and there's bad. Pr floating around that there. The judges the pj washington story. Ed there's this guy like a like a johnny cochran type figure who's like this is my lane and i'm just gonna step up and i'm gonna squashes and i'm gonna get out in front of this and i'm gonna run point on this and we're gonna we're gonna salvage pj washington it. Feels like tyler perry care. Yeah movie that he's just like yeah the negotiator. He's just going to come in to fix the all these outlets and retractions left the net. Yeah no i. I i did see that and my white asked is trying to keep up with what the hell was going on because It was very confusing to two. And then finally as soon as i understood what. The story was which like I then realized it was all fake. Right was all it was all bullshit so we don't really need to hash. Every i mean it is fake. It's like the numbers are fake. Like how much money he owes for child support every month. That that's all fake. But the actual you know what i mean. Yeah but like the not the situation. The the fact that he's paying child support ended up. Itself is not particularly noteworthy. It is the story is the number that it was like two hundred thousand right. That was the that was story. So if you take the story was like yes you set. That story goes away. Which is why you need somebody. These guys need somebody to step up like because because if you're pj walked you through it it's not like pj washington's get off the internet. Just isn't that what ray donovan does i. I know my mom watches. Ray donovan but i'm pretty sure raymond's downlands job is to like sniff out like bad. Pr bad situations and like clean before it gets out. Yeah pretty sure. That's what he does as i'm thinking about this. I think we need to work out the situation like where we put out another report. That's like she's actually paying. Pj washington thousand dollars a month to be able to see this on the josh pastor. Who won the acc tournament last year And and you know the reason. There's no i. I don't know what he's up to right now. I don't know what he's doing. I just wanted to call attention to josh faster. When they see see tournament in that he wore a mask a welder. Shield on the sideline for an entire season and then one. Acc tournament coming back as compared to your own esteem as well. All of these things happen now in the raptors. All of these things happened and i. It's just one of those things. I don't forget to eight so shadow gesture. Men cash out another coach. I wanna shut out brad underwood because we had katie underwood on our show and After this we we had someone tag us. This is on twitter it's coach underwood taking cow He's got a show. Like i don't even know what what he enters. The show with the cow I don't know if this is like a kansas thing You know texas thing or whatever but it's something that we should have asked about. And i think next time we have katie on. We have more questions. That are definitely specific. Like what is brad underwood doing his free time. You know what i mean. And i just wanna shout that out because for for the journalists that sit here. We should have gone deeper. You know what. I mean i. I wasn't tell us video. I'm like i need. I need this brad underwood couch. Just be prepared for the cow turnaround. And say hey. Yeah in the face. I wanna shout out. coach k. There is going to be his final season. Coaching audi greatest coach of all time to ever blow a twenty eight point lead or favored by twenty points. Even a boston at home lose that game. At the buzzer. He's ever Coach of all time to and I just want to remind everybody that he is in fact. The greatest coach of all time to be favored by twenty yes and lose at home at the buzzer so coach k. We're thinking of you come on the show. Ya farewell tour this. I have to say this for the show too. So i know you know this in our producer jim noses but i talked to coach. Cakes is true for the people. Yeah for for for a brief moment in time for about thirty minutes. I had zuma coach k. One to one face to face having a conversation about basketball the five star basketball camp and all the sort of stuff and you know you always hear never meet your heroes and and i firmly believe in this. Never meet your heroes. Your heroes will only disappoint you but always. I want to stress as always meet your enemies because coach k. I mean just. He corrected me a few times. You know he he like he gave me the look like hsien app just sap and you know it was a beautiful moment and i i could care less about my heroes but i love my enemies And and seeing them face to face coach k. We love you. we can't wait to. I told him good luck on the farewell tour. He corrected me that it was. What did he say. This is not a farewell tour. He said this season. It's just one last right. It's not a farewell tour though. He wouldn't make it about himself even though he had four coach gays on the calendar. It wasn't about him. The dude basketball like tweets out of greg this last ride with a trademark next to it and the reason he correct because they don't have the trademark farewell tour. They have the trademark one. No i can't wait till espn does a tim. Part series The last ride and it's coach k. And i took that personally it just get ahead of. He's trying to keep the brand strong. If you gotta call start calling it farewell tour that dilutes the effort of as said. I mean you know. Like the goat of ucla's kareem go north carolina's michael jordan. "Wanna win. We wanna win definitely feel like there's a target him of back. There's a lot of people that don't want me to succeed because he's gonna look like an NBA guy came back with no experience and one. So of course, I'm getting used to this as a coach because it's a little jealousy. From a lot of these coaches around around the country, and I do understand that because we're NBA players trying to come back, and we didn't have any experiences, college coaches. So we didn't quote on quote, pay our dues, so two coaches and their so-called boys are in the media. They're gonna always throw Janssen's, and that's coach Hardaway from a weekly press conference yesterday. So yeah, that's pool. Let's some pool audio there. You know? It's funny. Josh pastor didn't have any college coaching experiences a head coach when he came here that was his first coaching job. Yeah. He said on the end of the bench at Arizona, and he'd coach today but pennies been coaching in AAU. And. In very successful high school and middle school. But you never heard about passenger. But I would imagine what penny is hearing is. You know, the the coaching the coaching circle of small if you think about it. It's it's small and word gets around. And things are said let me tell you right now. We're pinning has ruffled feathers. And it's the recruiting. It is. I mean here he is a first year coach, and he gets the number one player in the country and Jane wise, James Wiseman who plays for east here in Memphis, and he got him away from blueblood and that twice feathers. Get ruffled. So yeah, I'm sure he's hearing some rumblings, and maybe people are saying that. But you know, what it doesn't matter the the results pennies success pennies? Penny success in his it'll be written on wins and losses on the court. I mean,.

"Normally we are in the Quicken Loans studios in southern California. But this is the mother of all road trips. We're taking this back on the road. We are live in the we're on radio row. We are getting ready for Super Bowl fifty three. My name is Jim Rome. All right. So the show is a little different this week. We go guest heavy normally on Monday. It's not that busy. But this is one of the all time best Mondays we've had you just heard from Josh pastor and cliff able and our number one coming up next segment. My CBS calling Brisco Jim Trotter after that. Bill Romanowski coming up in our number three. But as promised gets more, Georgia Tech in the house for you. We've talked Georgia Tech basketball. Now, we talked Georgia Tech football. We are joined by the head coach there. He was named head coach on December. Seventh fifteen and ten and a pair of bowl appearances into seasons as temple head. Coach fifteen wins is the most ever by a temple head coach in his first two years. He had a couple of stints as an assistant at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech coming off a seventy six season. They open up against Clemson on August twenty nine Jeff Collins is my guest, Jeff, oh, saying you, and I were laughing during the break you have to follow pass ner. But pastor had a fall out in Memphis, right? Not easy. Yeah. This is an honor to be on the show with you a huge fan. And this kind of a surreal experience has to remember when the bills and the Cowboys played in the Super Bowl in Atlanta. Collagen came and experienced it to be on your show. It's a huge that you mentioned that do you remember that? Because I I don't want to date myself. But I'm talking about it in the week leading up to it. I was here that week. I covered the game that week, man. It was cold ice storm was unlike any what do you remember about that week? Yeah. Just being here and going to the NFL experience be around the game, you know, huge college football fan NFL fan. And now be here. This is a surreal surreal experience wants to real Jeff. What about the fact that you played in Bobby Dodd stadium as a member of the western Carolina catamounts back in eighty nine. I told you that day after that game that you would be here as head coach of Georgia Tech thirty years later. What would you have said absolutely, not, you know, when I was a graduate assistant, Georgia Tech in the late nineties early two thousand Georgia Leary, I kind of crystallized that I wanted to do this one day and beat the head coach here, but still going around Atlanta. See my face up on the billboards around two eighty five it's still very surreal. This is happening. But I'm having an absolute blast doing Jeff Collins is the head football coach at Georgia Tech. They mentioned O'Leary when you were a graduate assistant of his head coach you kept trying to convince him to let you recruit tell me about the conversations. What were they like? And what gave you confidence that you could go into somebody's living room come back with a recruit division, three coach Albright college. We signed eighty two kids I signed forty five of them before. I got my job at Georgia Tech for sure as coach Lear's graduates distant if I could recruit, and he just shush me way. Pushed me back in back in a corner to break down some more film the next year asked him again. And he was I alright wiseguy we have six primary states that we recruit you can have the other forty four. He thought that would shut me up, but we signed five kids out of those forty four states. And at the very next year. He promoted me to full time is the tight ends coach. He has probably similar to what I went through. I went when I worked at ESPN back in the day. I want to get one of those so-called Sunday night conversations. And they gave me the same thing. Like really want that you want that? All right. Here's five guys if you can get any one of them you can have that there were five guys that never get. So we went out there. And we turned a few of them. How did you approach those six states when you got that opportunity? Yeah. Absolutely. I just was relentless. G as back then could make phone calls. So I was just a incessant letter writer, and I'd probably sin, but five letters a day through the snail mail and got them to have interest in Georgia Tech, and we ended up getting assigned him, and they had great careers force. We're talking Georgia Tech football. Now. Is you talk about when you were here. Georgia Tech was a top ten team. They were playing for ACC championships. Is you look at the work in front of you. What's it going to take to get back to that spot? Is it a total rebuild or can you turn around quicker than that? Yeah. Just a big thing with me is just culture and branding. You know, I've been here when Georgia Tech was in the forefront of the conversation college football college game day was here. The prime time games are in Bobby Dodd stadium. So I've seen it happen at this place. And I know we're going to get it back there. But it's all about culture, it's all about recruiting. And we're doing a great job hard. Unbelievable. Staff of great men, relentless recruiters. They're going to help bring the talent back to the the next head coach in. In any sport whatsoever. Does not reference culture on this show will be the first culture is the term. And understandably, so what does that mean to you? What is a Georgia Tech culture? Look like under Jeff Collins, innovative, playing with relentless effort, positive attitude, positive energy, and every single thing that you do we're going to tack everything that we have involved in the organization, and that starts with recruiting starts with our workouts. We were five thirty Saturday morning doing a game of thrones workout in and around. What is that mayhem? There were ten stations all over the all over the campus and for about an hour and a half, we got after it every single member of our staff other than our fulltime coaches were dressed in as game of thrones characters, and I just having fun having excitement working really really hard, but you can have fun while you work hard. And we're doing that brought that up because you made a point having fun doesn't mean you don't care having fun. Doesn't mean you don't grind coaches seem to run from fun. Like, it's the plague. Or something, and they treat college football like a job like a job or a career and even worse than that. How do you go about balancing it out fun for getting the work done? The big thing. I think you can have a lot of fun. There's a borderline between having fun having energy and having juice and being silly. So we make sure we have that line set that we're going to do everything the right way, but we're gonna have energy we're gonna have music, we're going to have just a lot of excitement of surrounding our program and the guys feed off of it. I mean, this is the music capital of the southeast. Ashley, the movie capital of the southeast. So we're just kind of of a lot of fun embracing that culture, you mentioned juice, what does juice juice, look like what's it feel like how does it show up? You can just tell it's people that have positive energy excitement when they walk into the facility, they walk into the building your they want to be there. They want. Excel they want to work hard. But they want positively affect their teammates, and coaches that I've hired I've been blessed to hire have all of those traits and bring it out in their players. And you know, so just. Getting to work together. We're doing that Georgia Tech head football. Coach Jeff Collins joins me on the row. Now, you talk about a guy who looks like he's not having a whole hell of a lot of fun. I could be wrong. I could be wrong. Nick Sabin is not look like he's having fun. You work for Nick is he having more fun than he lets on in. What was your biggest takeaway from being with him? Yeah. I was blessed to be with him two thousand seven we put together. Arguably one of the best recruiting classes in the history of the game. And learn so much structurally organizationally in how to deal with different parts of the organization and I loved working for him. He coaches the defensive backs I coached the defensive backs at Georgia Tech, and I did at temple, and I take a lot of pride in that think the world of him is he tough on the staff was he on UPS, it just holds everybody accountable. Everybody has an assignment everybody has responsibility. And he does a remarkable job of just making sure, you know, the people are doing their job and fallen through in the mission of the organization thought about him. He talks about the process. Well, he doesn't everybody talks about his process is this. Process. So different from yours. Is it so different from other people's I'm used to process not attention to detail work, really hard every single day. I mean, he's not the process. Yes. Beautiful thing. I've learned so much. I've been in with Dan Mullen at the university of Florida or Mississippi State, and he had been with urban Meyer. So that tree I've been blessed to be in the urban Meyer tree, I've been blessed to be in the Nick Sabin tree and kind of blended those things, but the big thing is kids these days. No, if you're genuine or are, they know if your fake, and so the big thing, I do is try to be true to my personality. But still use the great things that I've learned from the great coaches that I've been able to work for what was the experience in stark Vegas. It is the cow bells. I think I still have echoes from the cowbells from being four years there. My last year there we were number one in the country for ten weeks. Dak Prescott was a quarterback. Mckinney was middle linebacker. We had a really good team and a really good culture and the whole off season conditioning program at Georgia Tech, and it was at temple as well is based on that offseason conditioning setup that we did have different guys Dak what was he like to coach one of the so we have a saying an organization you can either be a great leader. You can be a great teammate news. The only two things you can be. But you can never be a great leader. Unless you're I a great teammate Dak Prescott was when the greatest teammates I've ever been around. I in the building last one to leave always eight last make sure his guys were taken care of. And you know, I had a, you know, it's an honor to be around him. We divided the teens in the off season in ten different teams throughout the organization. The captain's pick who's on their team. And one of my claims to fame is the last year there. I was Dax I pick to be an offseason teams and we won the off season. So that was a that was a little claim to fame for. That's a good one. Jeff Collins joining us, you mentioned leadership I'm fascinated by leadership. I'm sure you think about leadership quite a bit them quite a bit on leadership in terms of great leaders. Are they made her they born a little bit of both? I think you can work on your strings work on your weaknesses. We try to educate our guys every single day on what they need to be to either be a great leader to be a great teammate. I think there's an inherent quality to be an exceptional leader. But there are always things that you can improve on. I try to improve on them every single day. And we try to educate our leaders in that way as well. Do you need to make a lot of great plays in order to be a great leader? No. I don't think the plane has anything to do with that gives you a little more street credit times. But some of the greatest leaders that I've been around or the role players are the guys that are in the in the trenches doing the dirty work, and I don't get a lot of recognition. But they're the ones that really set the tone for your program. Can you be a great leader? If you do not go to the waffle house. Waffle practitioners when did that start? So I've always been a waffle house guy ever since I was a little kid growing up in east Atlanta. And then being up in Philadelphia for the last two years you had to drive an hour and fifteen minutes to Delaware to go to waffle house, which I into it..

"Modern air, low everything on the core product modern era low I mean, people got so mad at Josh passener in those seven years, particularly the last two Josh passers worst team was significantly better and all the computers than tubby Smith's besting. It was bad and you'd go tire game. Sometimes and there'd be people in FedEx for what when they used to get sixteen thousand for Memphis, East Carolina. Now, you got a thousand for Memphis against anybody. They had to give away like eight thousand tickets to get above ten thousand for Cincinnati game last season. And that's a that's a traditional rival that was ranked in the top ten at the time. And I had been saying on my radio show, and I'm certain on this podcast for nearly a year. It doesn't matter. What you think's right in in terms of you can't fire coach after two yet. You have to do it. This is a disaster. And you don't do it in open up coaching. Search you do it and you hire Penny Hardaway because he'd fix your money problem. You season-ticket problem? He'd flip the vibe of the program immediately. But then he would also. You always got ties to these costs to nineteen prospects. And I said if he's going to have a chance to flip Jeffries, and he's going to be the leader to get James Wiseman if he can recruit James Wiseman from Nashville to Memphis to play these high school. I don't know why can't recruit from east to Memphis, which is less than a mile away from each other. And it all came to fruition this week. And so listen, if you want to be skeptical that the on the court results are going to match whatever the recruiting rankings into being that's fine with me. But I will say he does have a former NBA coach of the year on his staff in San Mitchell. Another guy who's respected as a great basketball mine in Mike Miller. And when you talk to college coaches who watched pennies team on the grass roots level. They will tell you that he quote knows how to coach that he can coach, and I will say I've watched all their games so far, and he doesn't look at a place. He doesn't look at a sorts. He doesn't seem overwhelmed or overmatched. And so if you want to be skeptical that that's fine. But I'll just leave it at this. If you're going to keep getting top fifty players in the American conference, you go win a lot of games whether you can coach you're not. That's what John Calapan. Josh pastor did the conference USA. They just overwhelm them with athletes. It matter one good coach wants not coach or whatever pain is of those guys you can overwhelm people in the league. Like, the AC not in the you can't overwhelm people in the because his do can hall of fame coach, there's Carolina hall of fame coat. There's Tony Bennett. There's might Bray. There's Jim boeheim hall of fame cut like Ewing. You ain't going in that league and just getting good recruits and winning automatically..

"No, Jerry Jarrett has not been there very long. He was at UAB before, then this is his first season. Right? I think it is is first season. That's what that's what the media says. I use it because I didn't happen. Leisure didn't happen. That's the first game. The next year is going to be the first one ever plays add North Carolina. I'm going to be. Yeah, nice. That's that's the first time. So I'll see them in person. The car? No, they look good. I will be sure to point that out if they get blown out, I will definitely be sure to point that out. Jerry, what's his lesson? Jared has. It's unfortunate last name when you're coaching, shitty, bass, Wilton. Yeah, we're like, Jared, but. The bulls. We move on. Number eighty. One on our list is the Georgia Tech yellow jackets coach by lane kiffin of college, basketball, Josh passenger himself. This is passengers youngest team at Georgia Tech. He lost been Lammers. He'd lost a Kogi. He lost Tajik Jackson, and you think about all that he lost and you think to yourself, why was Georgia Texas bad last year? Because it should have been better. The should've they started the year in China, right? And they played, you sell in China, and then they lead? Yeah, lead liangelo to steal. And then that was like the last we heard from him and then we never heard from Georgia Tech. Again, they had like first round pick been Lammers like one of the best players like talent wise in the country. But we remember really what happened. Right. We'll have him ner. He was. He was going through the ringer as they say, oh, off off core. Yeah. And he has been cleared maybe if you, if there's any optimism for the land. So he got cleared and they found the assault claims to be false. I think it was in June that guy. I remember seeing it in the summer and thinking to myself, I need to remember that this happened just so I can say, Josh passenger will be, you know, back in some capacity. So I do think that Georgia Tech a passenger last year should have been a really good season for them. Just based on the players like you mentioned, Jackson Cody, all those guys in Lammers. Of course, I think that Josh passenger will be back. They got mentioned the instability stuff as as a as they tried to recruit Nick tomb when he was in France, obviously passionate wasn't there at the time, but that was good PR for that. People were like, like people are like, oh yeah, I remember when Derrick favors right up in the crowd and committed to Georgia Tech and Paul Hewitt was there. And I remember when you know Jerry Jackson was there, and I remember, you know, all the all these times in the passenger to take actually mattered to us. So I think it was good news and now the. Oh, jackets are center trae young. Hit the shot. Yeah, free from the g. Yeah, like it's great for subtle pub that's coming in. This is good for passenger. Georgia Tech still exists. Pessimist higher to Memphis when he was thirty one, he's my age. Yeah. No, he was supposed to be show them. But he was thirty one Linkin was thirty when you hired by the raiders. But yeah, the whole Chicago, the going back to Chicago. Same thing. I'm not too young. I'm I'm thirty one. You don't just as much as Josh pastor did not over five years to. What for five million. Oh my God, dude. Oh my God. I'm how much will move on the next thing Pepperdine I'm I'm done. I'm done with passenger for he got. I can't even. I was trying to trying to coach for free God. Damn it. Yes. And he got four point. Five million? Yes. You just got Memphis, move onto Pepperdine. A speaking of coaches Lorenzo Romar is back stint number two pepper nine. He's coming home. So who's the more impressive comeback guy, Dave Leitao tubby Smith or Lorenzo Romar because all three of them are very more remorse going to have the most Romar is the one that's gonna win..
