"All right, we're back here at the hockey party cast with the matri filippovich and Harmon dial harm. Let's talk about chicken. So he goes for a 2023 first, which is top 5 protected. Washington's 2024 second. And a 2026 second down the road. And there was a lot at play here. There's a ton of context. It's clearly important that was dictating this price, right? It came out afterwards. Elliott Freeman reported that the coyotes essentially had no interest in taking any dollars back, even if it was expiring for this deal, like to facilitate it. They needed to do a deal like this where they just take on futures that they don't have to pay for now and just get off of Jacob chicken's contract, which in and of itself is such a sad way to think about this thing because you're talking about a 25 year old defender who's in his prime who's really good, who's making half of what he probably should be on the open market and you're viewing it as like, this is a bit too pricey for us. I think we need to cut some costs here. Let's save the coyotes conversation for us for a bit down the road here because it's another whole separate issue, but from the senator's perspective, I get the risk of, all right. If they missed the playoffs again, this is too straight years where they trade a first for Alex to bring. They trade a first for Jacob Chico. They're running out of runway with cheap ELC or similar to what we're talking about with the Canucks where Jake Sanderson has one war. They've already paid Josh Norris. They've already paid Brady could shock. They've already paid Tim stutzle. They've paid Thomas Shabbat, right? They've already not boxed themselves in but like they're paying for a lot of these young players and they don't have the team success yet. That's to show for it, right? And so you're wondering whether it's from a timing perspective the right timeline, whether it makes sense, I guess I don't want to be speaking out of both sides of my mouth here because the senators aren't necessarily that far ahead of the Canucks in terms of their place in the league hierarchy. But I do like that they went and at least got a cost controlled 25 year old defenseman taking even though they're not in that dissimilar position. I know that they're much closer to the playoffs this year. There is risk involved, but I just maybe what's clouding my judgment is the fact that I feel like I'm on the extreme end of my Jacob sugar and evaluation. I think he is very, very good and the conversation around him has not done justice what a player he is. Yeah, I think there are also a couple of differences in comparing the senators and the cocks. Number one is senators at this point. They don't

"Anne ingraham isn't it. he's second. I believe second or third. It's mike ditka in nineteen sixty one is early. Yes that's how hard it is as a rookie tight end. The guy hit set the record that stood for what now sixty years. i mean. that's crazy but it's hard to be a make tight end. Make that transition. Excuse me josh. Norris of nbc. Sports said it's the hardest position of them all to transition from college to the pros so to me. The eight seventy five is wild but if people wanna draft kyle pits and let me have george kittle like. I'm not gonna complain no for sure. George kittle should be going well ahead a pets. Because even if i'm saying cockpits can hit eight seventy five like it is risky and you know george gidell's hitting that you like beyond that if he stays healthy like that's the biggest thing but if he stays healthy. I mean he's going to destroy that number. So yes and speaking of burke's like brandon uk's rookie season is getting so overshadowed because yeltsin jefferson had just an absolutely amazing rookie season like broke all those records. But that does not defeat why brandon. I did like we should not be just overlooking that. He led all rookies and targets per game. He had the second most receptions per game receiving yards per game just behind justin jefferson. He was one of five rookie wide. Receivers to average five receptions for game since twenty ten and the other four. Were odell beckham. Michael thomas justin jefferson jarvis landry and all of those guys. I ended up having ninety five plus receptions and were selected to the pro bowl in their second season so the first three that i guess we have to see what justin jefferson does because he was just last year as well but odom michael. Thomas jarvis landry all had over ninety five receptions in their second year. I think brandon i. You can be like. I know you're worried. He's the next dante pettis lashing us but not they patterson do close to what you did in your one and i do think he's way more talented coming out of school. I think you have a true superstar here at the wide receiver position. Deebo samuel can be your tough. Do like your juju income bolden but you have a true superstar in brandon. Iu and we're overlooking just because justin jefferson destroyed the season. It's clear to me. That brandon is the more complete wide receiver like brandon. I you can run. The jet sweep plays and running. Plays the deebo. Samuel can can run and he also can run routes and get open deep like so. He's like deebo plus now he's not as physical as depot dude is just. He's just a monster. But i i love the skill. Set that brandon has now never forget. Kyle shanahan's reaction when they drafted him in the first round he was like outwardly like steering and celebrating and this was in a wide receiver class. That was absolutely loaded. When i saw that i was like one kyle was a wide receiver in college. He's an offensive genius as a playcaller clearly knows the position so for him to be that excited. We must have gotten a stud and like you're saying right now. Everything points to him being that good. Yeah we're we're seeing that now the jets. When they took a more he was gone. I in their cell pump the have them and their reviews. Coming out of camp is that he's just been so good and it makes me very excited. Because the morris maya monday i saw that you know how it is coming out of camp like reporters have to give updates and i saw one for the jets and it was basically like i know i say this every time about who flash but it's elijah more again just doing things and i keep thinking of you because i know he was your crush the player that you love more than any other and i kind of like feel for the jets. 'cause i feel like they never have that guy on their team. They're like a running defensive team. That's who the jets have been. Let's get them dynamic playmaker police like i think one every forty years is okay. Yeah and i've been calling a lighter more two point. Oh antonio brown two point. Oh it's going to have now. i'm excited for. That's crazy to me like. Do you realize how good antonio brown was with steelers. That's a lot of expectation to put on a lodge more. Yes i do. I do and i don't expect that immediately but i do think he has the skill set. I'll say obviously for him to actually become antonio brown should be a hall of famer. We'll see if it happens. I mean his whole personal issues might get in the way with that holy allies. You're moore's antonio brown who doesn't go crazy. Yeah that'd be nice. But i agree with what you're saying i'm brandon. I hope that we see you know him get a chance to produce what we think he can do. Because i feel like he more than anybody else on offense was held back by just the disaster of a situation at quarterback. I feel like if he had any sort of consistency there. He would have flashlight. Justin jefferson maybe not to that extent but he would have thrust himself into the conversation on the national stage. Yeah and the fact that he had this top five rookie season with nick. Mullins and cj beathard like the sky's the limit with the state. I really think you so good. There's so many great pieces on your offense because they were just kind of throwing deebo samuel to the side but he is an awesome offense of weapon like you want him on your offense. I don't want him a fantasy but that doesn't mean he's not great for nfl team and then where he moster. Who missed eight games last year. Like he's so good when he's action the he opens up everything to he can. He is a guy who can get a massive chunk. Play for you. And that's not normal for the forty niners. You need him on the field. He's averaging five point four yards per carry since twenty nineteen. That leads the nfl. For guys. i have over one hundred fifty carries since twenty nineteen That's a lotta guys. And he leads the nfl in yards per carry like. He's so good he's also just a player. I mean this is the theme of the podcast. Stay healthy and that's why they drafted trae sermon. And i 'cause i feel like kyle just if you looked at kyle shanahan last year. He aged in dog years like it was he did rent you like it. Just took it out of them. All sunny started growing. The beard appeared started growing in like all grey. It was just an absolute gut punch for him last year. And i think his message to john lynch and everybody in that organization was like this can not happen to us again. He even said the injuries hit us before cova. Did they've built in redundancies in the entire roster. You mentioned it quarterback now running back you look. They have traced sermon and they drafted ally mitchell and they brought in wayne gaughman. You look at the offensive line. They drafted two guards on the offensive line to really try and shore up the interior of the line. They're they're bringing in defensive lineman like crazy like they have the debt that defensive line that is going to serve them so well this year as they try to keep everybody fresh and rotated. They basically have redundancies. Built in an injury insurance so to speak built in on almost every position except for linebacker and secondary but other than that they are doing everything they can to try and avoid just the absolute train wreck that was last year. Yeah and you're so right. Shanahan looked so rough at the end of that season. Like if you look at a picture of him before he became the forty niners head coach. After it's like it's only been forty years dude like what happened to you. He's aging like a president. Yeah he really is horman format because he's a cute guy but yeah it's the his face just looks like sunken in mike just so tired all right so the now you mentioned that. He's a cute guy so now i have to ask who is the best looking. Nfl head coaches. it cooked kingsbury. Yeah it has to be single. Because i know a lot of women think he is like devastatingly. Good looking he seems like alright a fine looking human. But i don't think he's like he's jimmy. Garoppolo say no. I don't think i wouldn't look at him. Oh god he's so hot but if when you're being compared to other nfl coaches. It's not very hard like there's not very many great. Nfl looking head coaches yeah. Jimmy garoppolo is a special human being. That's for sure it's very handsome. Elise off the football field. All right. let's take a break. Because i know there's something about the defense that you wanna bring up and i don't want a slight the d the obviously very important so we'll take a quick break and we'll do that when we come back..

"Decided yet. That's the big question to me. You have thirty five people who haven't out of the ninety. You need twenty two out of that thirty five to decide to do something that they could have already done at this point. I just don't see that happening. And there is an interesting aspect of this that i think could become part of the nfl storyline of the twenty twenty one season. Not just for the forty niners but the nfl. Large the whole reason why we're talking about eighty five percent is because at eighty five percent a bunch of restrictions put on by the league are lifted. You can. You don't have to wear masks around each other. You can have team meetings in your normal conference room where everybody's next to each other rather than through zoom you can basically mingle and hang out a bit more and that makes you closer in. That helps win games in all honesty. And kyle mentioned those things that he would really like to be able to do those things so i wonder if this becomes something that mo- among all. Nfl locker rooms becomes a rift of sorts. Because you're going to have some teams meet the eighty five percent and i think you're probably gonna have a majority of teams not quite meet eighty five percent of the players who did get vaccinated. Sit around the locker room staring these other guys down going. I have to wear those masks. Because of you i have to go home and do a zoom conference rather than being able to sit in the damn team conference room because of you like i think. There is potential for some rifts and locker rooms that have this happen and we do have a precursor to this major league. Baseball is very similar policy. There's eighty percent and you have seen certain players. Gm speak out a little bit one of them being the cubs gm. Jed hoyer actually spoke out and said he's disappointed in his players that they have not met the eighty percent yet and thus they can't do certain things that would give them a competitive advantage. And i think that's going to be the case in the nfl. I think that everything you said is completely logical. I think it naturally will happen like you said 'cause when guys decisions affect other people's lives that's when rifts tend to form it's just it's amazing to me because you would think if there was one team that would be more willing to get vaccinated just to avoid all the extra precautions that you have to take. It would be this team. It would be the team that got kicked out of their city and their stadium and had to go and finish the season at arizona because of covert not arguably was more inconvenience from football operations standpoint last year than the forty niners. So if you had to tell me that. I could pick one team to bet on that was going to reach that threshold. I thought it would bend san francisco. But i guess not and to be honest levin. Getting there no you know. I'll be curious to see. Because i don't think there's definite policy on this. I could be wrong because honestly the nfl hasn't said much about it nor have nfl teams but does it affect travel. You know this past year teams flew in and played pretty much. Same day you know. They flew a day later the normal. They didn't get as much time to adjust to wherever they were going. So i'm wondering if you don't meet the eighty five percent if you still have to follow that policy and thus there is an actual a huge competitive advantage to the teams the do me eighty five percent and can follow a more traditional timeline. I just on twitter. Eleven sam darnold said he's not been vaccinated yet quote. There's a ton of different things that go into it. S somebody on twitter. Charles mcdonnell actually just joined us on the espionage Nfl show. He said what different things go into it. Then josh norris followed that tweet up with can we blame adam gates for this too. I just thought that was a masterful job by everybody involved. And i wanted to point that out. Yeah and that's what we're getting out. I mean this whole. Kobe thing is one of the topics this week in the nfl. Large because montas sweep had about as dumb of a response as you can get. In my opinion he said that he is not vaccinated yet because he's never gotten cova did and until he gets cova he doesn't feel like he needs the vaccine. That's not how it works. It's not a cure. It's a vaccine. it helps prevent you from getting it. It's not a oh. I have covert better. Go get that shot. So i don't die like and the best part was he was asked about that because washington had brought in experts to help educate the players on the vaccine and provide more facts and they asked how that was a month sweets reaction was. I didn't like that at all on his rant about how. He's not getting the vaccine until he gets cool but it's like because then he followed it up by saying because there's not enough facts known about the vaccine like. Yeah that's why the brought the expert in the teach you everything they know like clearly didn't listen if you think the vaccine cure so yeah monta sweat. Here is the full exchange. What did you make of the way. The team is bringing in vaccine experts to encourage people to get vaccinated quote. I'm not a fan of it. I probably won't get vaccinated until i get more facts and all that type of stuff. I'm not a fan of it at all. Which seemingly contradictory because the expert is the one who would have the facts he was asked. What is your hesitation with getting the vaccine quote. I haven't caught cova yet. I don't see me treating. I don't see me treating cove until i actually get covert k. Again as you pointed out that's not how it works. You talked to the coaching staff about the vaccine presentation. obviously they want everybody to be vaccinated to move more freely around the facility and with traveling and all that type of stuff but everybody has their own belief san. They're entitled to their own decision next question. How much has there been discussion in the locker room. Just about all of that. Meaning vaccines quote. We talk about it all the time amongst my peers and that type of stuff. A lot of it is going on today. It's a constant conversation that we are always talking about. I don't understand it that shows that there could be a big rift. Teams are talking about it. The players are talking about it amongst themselves. I mean i talk about work. You know who is talked about. When the vaccines i started rolling out at my workplace and my workplace isn't really affected by whether or not you know people get vaccinated like the nfl. I think there is a very big potential for risk to be caused in certain. You know. I think basically they're talking about it. That means that there's a chance that once the season comes if they keep talking about it that somebody crosses the line and gets mad or loses their temper and goes off on the people who haven't gotten vaccinated and that creates the rift that creates locker room that has to choose sides. Everything goes into the bucket and everything simmers and like john madden called winning the ultimate deodorant and if teams are winning and everything's great. Maybe it doesn't come up when stuff starts to go south. Everything is a factor all the contributing factors bubble up. And i agree with you. I think that at some point it's gonna come out like hey maybe you would have known the damn play if you could have been in the meeting room instead of on zoom because you didn't get vaccinated like i. It's very easy to me that that stuff could happen right. Winning teams probably aren't going to have a rift form. So yeah maybe the cowboys. Ever rift form tokyo specs into murder. The cowboys out of the blue like that. Maybe it's hopefully it's the cowboys. The packers the buccaneers. Let's get rips on all of those teams. What the hell. No i want. Everybody get vaccinated dammit as many people as possible even if it costs the forty niners the super bowl and we'll see we'll see how that plays out but that was basically the news of the day mike mcdaniel also spoke I am going to be honest with you..

"Guys New guy this new head pro or whatever or the or whoever's harassing him sounds like there have been on the greasy side. Yeah yeah and he didn't go to a labor lawyer which a lot of them will do right and file a wrongful dismissal suit and all that stuff and you know. It's just one more thing that that i was impressed with this guy that he did you know and soak of anyway. I thought it was. I thought it was pretty pretty interesting. Story know anyway. he's easy. He ended the hunger strike they. They've they've raised five or six grand form so far so good story could ziani. Meanwhile there was a neat story as well Real heartwarming kind of a story and pertains of the ottawa senators. For those who don't fall the sense that most people who listen to this show but they have a rookie by the name of tim. Stutz ladies the third overall draft pick in the most recent draft. And he's been very good for the sins they could parlay his stats over a full season over eighty two games. He'd be a forty six point guy and for the youngest full-time player in the entire. Nhl that's hell season and it's only gonna get better. So he gets against winnipeg on saturday. He gets his first. Nhl hat trick but of course you lose something something in terms of the celebration because no fans to throw their hats on the ice and so not a tragedy no big thing really but it would have been kind of cool and so tim stood slush shares a townhouse with brady shock where a duplex with brady shock. And josh norris. Talk about three future superstar players all living together and I guess the neighborhood kids all got together. It was only i guess could check talked to a few neighbors and stuff and supposed to be just a few kids but it built it built all kinds of momentum and all these other kids showed up so it looked like maybe twenty kids all armed with about ten hats a piece right and they stood in the backyard of tim. Stitz lewis place right behind the fans and he came out. I guess could shock helped..

"You'll know better than i. What year that was. But he put up some decent stats. Yeah they get twenty five goal season. I think yeah you know. Econo- browns of same type of player honest hardworking guy got a little bit of skill on the offensive side. Definitely has a high hockey. I q and can play anywhere near light up. And he's the kind of guy you need if you're going to win you just don't want him on your top line regularly. You don't even want him on your second line regularly. You were playing on a top two or three team in the league He's probably playing on the third line if he's on the first line it's only because he's there to as defensive presence with two studs otherwise third-line guide so thou you have to factor in all right. How much do we pay third-line guy and that's where you might have a bit of a problem here Down the road on. I'm not sure you were trying to remember what it is. That he voided. What is he making right now. Do you remember. I think he's around three and a half three eight You're absolutely right. He's making three six. So that's not bad like not a problem at all with that kind of money. I hear everything you're saying. I still maintain an. He certainly can help. Be a defensive presence. But i also think that there's a chance that that guy 'cause even more than jj pozo he's creating all the time you've mentioned before about. Does that guy dr. A line in our conversations for example about above guinea often the answer's no whereas connor brown is driving lines. Right now. whatever line he's on like he's not only a great defensive presence but he's making crap happen. Josh norris school like connor brown won't be on the scoresheet for an assist on that but he's the guy that went into the corner with two leafs went down in a heap big mass and forced a turnover that ended up on norris's stick. Sorry i it. Went out to. I think it was atherton and the not norris but making stuff happen creating chances and you know he'll be well off in my theory here well off what his to linemates will do as far as actual stats go. Maybe but i still think that that guy might have a home on a top six situation again. Like i said with skill players right like like yes. He is your stereotypical third-line grinding winger..

"Weren projects sports. And whatever i welcome back to the show and By the way sends oilers again tonight. Seven o'clock I shouldn't say tonight people listen to this all the time and i'm constantly trying to figure out when they're going to pick the day thursday april eighth seven pm. That's when they play their next game. Do you think the oilers will run the table. Will they finish it off at nine ano- eventually you would keep betting on ottawa right. Murphy's law sti murphy's law here's what's going to happen tonight okay. I'm betting the farm on the orders. Really they are absolutely steve going to drill ottawa. They're absolutely going to drill them. They got no chance. They're licking their chops. So josh norris who. He's a rookie for the sends in his quote was Bordering on calling shot. You're eight and against the edmonton oilers and sends rookie. Josh nora says this it's been a long year against them but we can't go goose eggs against them the whole year. So i think we'll find a way to get one on thursday and play a good game for sixty minutes. I like his optimism. Mean they certainly got all the incentive in the world. You're a professional you're used to success and this has got to be Even the sends rebuild state. This has got to be a little embarrassing. Eventually when our when when edmonton Gets close to locking up a playoff spot check. What are the standings stephen. The north With got twenty fifteen to twenty games left. You wonder when because of this really odd schedule it's so compacted they're talking about you. Know the teams that are going to power through this thing. Mentally emotionally are going to be able to handle all this you know hopefully no injuries you wonder when edmonton does get close to locking up spot. Which they're they're getting there now. They have the right now. They've got if you can believe it. They've already got a fifteen point. Lead on the canucks who are in fifth so right arrow their lock as as are the leafs and the jets. so if you're coaching edmonton steve. And you've got As they call connor mcdavid. Hair the the faberge egg do not leave him alone. Boys okay let him do whatever he wants to do that. You're going to start to rest them a little bit. Stevie you know yeah you might might you see the others. Give him a night off. At least ibac is ice time. I think right injuries. So i wonder i wonder. I wonder like no one's setting records. You know they're going to be unofficial records all that shit because there's only fifty six games but if i'm coaching them You know i'm starting to look at that. I'm starting to look at that. The other reason to steve is you'll get you might get.

"And this team was in transition much like the senators are so on that team either. Twenty or twenty one years. Old was ron francis. Myself kevin dineen. Oh samuelson dean everson. Paul mcdermott paul. Long all guys it play a long time in the nhl and we got our teeth kicked in for a lot of that year. We finished the year off ten into the next year. We made the playoffs and upset quebec in the first round loss to montreal in game seven of the adams division final but the turning point was that time when it didn't really look like we were getting better. We were all getting better. We were all learning the league. We're all kind of figuring it out even though it looked ugly and there's been some ugly nights for the senators. Yeah but now. Bathrooms got four goals in five games. Josh norris looks like he could be number two center. Brady contracts their captain. Thomas chabad is a brilliant. Young young player can matt. Murray give them goaltending because in that first year. What we did was we traded for michael. You'd and he gave us goaltending. Gave us a veteran presence of matt. Marie can do that. They're well on their way in ottawa. But i think they're going to finish seventh anyway this year. And that's okay. It is okay all right. Time to wrap up episode eleven. I know you've got games coming up interesting. Game in fact. Got the wednesday or thursday Montreal winnipeg game right yes. Let's the rest of the week. Look like this is the binder. Greg's this is it's all here. Is it going to take a look at it. Because i don't know where are we. What's the date today. Okay sam montreal. Winnipeg then i got monday. Tuesday winnipeg vancouver games and toronto vancouver on next thursday. They got a busy week and three jets games which are fun because there's lots going on with death by the way i'm not gonna i'm not gonna let go with. I loved that. Paul maurice is that three forwards overtime. I love aggressive stuff like that. I just leave those diatta. They're just gonna come up the project. Get the four result there and try to win. I loved it and you know the forwards. Love it as much as you do right. They're sitting there going. Yeah let's bring it here fellas. We don't want this to be a one off. Let's keep this thing rolling right you betcha. You know what i did last sunday. I'm gonna do this sunday again. I went to the gulf simulator. My core spoil ashley. How the ball The driver a little wonky. So here's the mistake. We made a shot eighty six at pebble beach. Which you know i mean i guess it's okay. I couldn't a driver very well for whatever ridiculous reason maybe in fact i haven't played in about five months whatever it is But the pro who sat up the golf course played from the blue tees which was again dumb. Mistake is about sixty nine hundred yards and we forgot to change the setting off of expert on the greens. While the number of time times being few buddies would chip over the back of the green the ball but with saves us. So i shot eighty six units. Save me from ninety. Plus is that..

"Percentage automated What was it was ten shots. And he allowed two goals and it was crazy and Everybody's talking about it. Everybody knows the story. Well now disney has ruled in and Yup we're gonna make a movie out of this thing. I guess dave has said that james corden called him of the late night comedian called him shortly after the win. Discuss making a movie about it airs then connected with creative artists agency and at least twenty four different production companies apparently expressed interest in it and They narrowed it down. Twenty four than to twelve and a now. The whole disney thing is happening and airs. Says he's told he's going to be a producer and he's going to help with writing the script that's pretty crazy stuff. I mean as if he already hasn't had the thrill of a lifetime now he's got a movie based on this story. Yeah when when the story broke right when it happened it was so cool right it was. I mean it went viral right for about a month. Yeah everyone was talking about it and everyone said you know this stuff. Movies are made right. Yup this but i said no no. No there's not enough here to make a movie relax. Everybody just relax okay. I know what happened. The guy came in and was super cool. But but no. It's not no. I need more for my movie law. I'm wrong. I read that piece. You just read this morning. The guy's not only steve. Do they have twenty four production of fits or companies that they gotta pick from that's who they narrowed it down to was twenty four. They had more way more than that. That people approached them about right. So what do i know. What do i know about. This thing is. You know wouldn't be enough there to make a movie so it'll be. I'm forward to it because those guys don't they know what they're doing stevie when they look at their their movie subjects they're always free to address it up to right so instead of like twenty eight minutes of hockey and an eight hundred save percentage hollywood's probably going to have him winning seventeen stanley cups making the hall of fame and walking on mars. Maybe cure cancer to. Yeah a couple of things. I want to touch on as we wrap up the show today. Couple of big stories that happened after we recorded and one is that the senate defeated montreal for in overtime really fun hockey game at the c. T. c. sends improved to four and two in their license games and the starting to resemble a pretty decent hockey team. We talked earlier about the revenge. Thing that maybe the sands of god for blood against the haves particularly after that spear on. Tim stood slow right in the neck. That never actually went down but it was a hell of a hockey game pond hockey at times Say the nhl would win a lot of fans a lot new fans with games like that. It had lots of storylines. Brady could check as usual at the center of it. All i e becomes the youngest player incense history to score fifty career goals. That's better the ashen. Hosa have latte ended up scoring twice on the night. Including tying goal which by the way was brutal. I mean people are gonna talk about the officiating and we'll get to that in a moment but carey price. Was the single reason montreal even got a point lead into bad ones but he was excellent in lot of cases could chuck also lost a couple of teeth in a brutal high. Stick situation from shea weber. Weber's trying to lift ca checks stick like with all his might and missed could check moved his blade at the last second. And so it was whammo shaft shea weber. Stick right on the chops and so could you right back out for the ensuing. Five on three so can't question that guy's toughness could check also got into a fight with bench cottam with a couple of rights on the beak and he had to leave a fix up some puncture wounds and yes so brady could chuck is high event hockey. There's no doubt about that and fans had to be sitting there going. We could have had that guy. We drafted kotkin yemi and we could have had kit shock. Montreal appeared to win the game at the end. Two seconds left. They seem to score but the goal was overturned on goalie. Interference brendan gallagher. Was the guilty party. He was livid and smiling. He's he's still not clear. That smiling is something you do. When you're you're happy but couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Cabs fan. Certainly though felt like matt murray time to reset after the interference but the bottom line is eight or fewer with the goalie. Goalies usually going to get the benefit of the doubt and i don't think there was any question that was goalie interference and then he had a wild three on three overtime. That's all of nothing. And then the sends win in the shootout on. Beautiful like beautiful high-skill goals by tim stewart's and josh. Norris sends fine low skill in the shootout and for that they can thank the air. Carlson deal both those guys. Coming over from san jose in the carlson deal. Effectively being the draft pick drake bathurst will come in handy there as well. He opened the game on a gorgeous breakaway goal. Five four shootout. They get calgary on thursday so be a lot of could chuck on ca- chuck action. Second story i wanted to add into the show before we wrap up was an update on tiger woods. As most of you have probably heard by now he was in a big car accident. He suffered serious leg injuries and he was trapped but conscious when emergency responders reached the scene of his rollover crash on a stretcher. California road this actually known for speeding an accident. He was driving shortly after seven. Am yesterday near l. a. And his suv crossed the median and went across two lanes of road before hitting a curb hitting a tree and landing on its side off the roadway in the brush and there was an la county sheriff's. Deputy was the first to arrive. He said he found would still in the driver seat wearing his seatbelt. Use able to tell him. His name was tiger. He was lucid and calm in shock. Didn't seem to be concerned with his injuries at the time. But i guess he was trying to get out but stock so they. Firefighters came used to pry bar in an ax to freedom meanwhile. Espn reporting that. He suffered serious but non life threatening injuries and underwent hours of surgery today and so the fact that is non life threatening injuries. That's really all you care about after seeing some of the images that we did today so that is fantastic news. We'll take time out on the program back with final thoughts. After these words. Everyone knows that to get the best price on home and auto insurance you have to shop around but who really wants to do that with access to all kinds of insurance markets not only can get you the best price but i'll also make sure that you get full value for your mother call me jour-jour all insurance ontario your modern blue tick broker jim kaye. "Get three points or more so yeah it was Even like the took a josh norris to get a point at plus one zero five. We just got lucky that that all those things hit and it was like a couple of weeks ago in the nfl in that Cleveland kansas city. Game where there was just points back and forth the whole time so everybody got in on the action last night. Okay so super. Bowl's coming up. What's your favorite goofy prop. That shows up on super bowl day. There's some good ones you know like I love the over under on the atom. Like i think that's that's the best. That's a good way to get in. Get up upper down before the game even starts right so over under on the anthem will go find out who singing it though. Like to research on youtube to see if they've sang it anywhere else before you know they'll try and listen to end and get news from the rehearsal in seattle rehearsal wet. Yeah so that's kind of fun but you know you can get everything like i've seen you know. Remember the traditional super bowl. Sunday where you know much beyond plays at home in the afternoon in the nhl. So you'd see like what will be more like kerry prices total number of saves or points by the home team. You know things like that. You can see all kinds of interesting props and yeah people people love it. It's it's a lot of fun. It's it's become almost biggest again now. I had a buddy of mine on this a super bowl party years ago. I don't even remember what super bowl it was. But this guy is thrown twenties and fifties around betting on everything absolutely everything including the coin toss right like is that a real thing or is that just for schmos like vape guy who owed log has nicknamed this duties a buddy of mine and reporter bed twenty bucks on the coin classes that real thing while it's of course it's a real thing people love the action and just like the anthem is a chance to you know. Get up or down Maybe get a little bit extra money in your account before the game even start so you know and then sportsbooks get a profit on it because people are gonna bet both sides so it's a win win for everybody it's been a fun isn't a smart thing to bet on no absolutely not. It's literally a flip but hey you could have worse thoughts on something now. What's what's the lines look like early. And what what trendy ac- of course there's the thought of brady doing something incredible and the reality. That mahomes is against a really good defense but he seems to do something great almost every week yet. We're seeing some really interesting. Bending action ray and actually dan and i were talking about this before you jumped on Before we did this call. Was that the public like everybody. The recreational bettors are coming in on kansas city at minus three At about a five to one ratio but the line is actually moved the other way because it was kansas city..

"In jets game. Two of the three game set forth game of the season for ottawa sends won their opener. The now dropped two in a row including the ot loss to winnipeg blowing a three one lead to nothing lead in that game. Lines are going to stay pretty much. The same tim stood sla. Still won't play and The call him jimmy. What do you think of that. Jimmy that tim stood still is being called jimmy by his teammates already. He's got a a nickname. And i tried to make heads or tails of it brady could chuck was on a podcast explaining it. Chuck is rooming withstood. Slow along with josh. Norris and drake battisson and i guess when he first arrived there is playing with him. Kinda came in with all this hype rate world. Junior star third overall draft pick and there was so much media hype about him. The kid himselves pretty understated. And he comes in and just to give them the gears. I guess he introduced himself. A my name is tim and they pretended to not understand him on though is even though it's an east german but english is excellent and so they say what did you say jimmy and No tim okay jimmy. And then i guess it stock and the coaches of now picked it up and now his nickname is jimmy stew. That's stupid that makes no sense at all. That's funny that's funny. I second okay doesn't doesn't do it for me. Let's go name stick for the for lesser reasons than that eight. What's the status. what is i heard. He was skating though like he's he's he's practicing shooting some pucks and stuff and i don't think he's practicing at the moment. No okay. i thought. I read that this morning. So they do say keeps saying. It's a minor injury and i don't think it's a bad thing you know the guy He came here to the world. Juniors came here and quarantined. He had five days of training camp and then whammo into the nhl regular season game. So he's you know he's eighteen or nineteen now and Played the two games and then got hurt. Doesn't it's not necessarily a bad thing for a kid to sorta get your feet wet. Baptism by fire. And then take a step back watch things from the stands and see what the nhl game looks like from up there so while he may be dinged up. I have no doubt that he is Lose any hurry to get him back in the lineup. Either per se so there can be education to be had for kid watching from the press box. I think i read a lot of postal Over the last twenty four hours of people loving that team after they're after their lost that overtime loss. They're fun to watch a lot of support for the coach from credible a hockey people saying these. He's good he knows what he's doing and many many people in this team's going to be fun to watch you know Positively by the way you know not fun to watch too. You can go down so anyway. Another dominated that jets game They ended up blowing a three one. Lead jets pulled the goalie and then scored the equaliser on a lucky bounce. That went off brain cobra in the sense defenseman and then Yeah is sort of one of those sins of youth were drake by thurston. Join in a four check in the three on three and makes for an easy jets breakout of a two on one and they score on it..

"Formed. They're gonna kill everyone. You know so now i should point. You know it's it is just it's traditional that you know when you To have your home opener and your the day before at practice yesterday running your lines you generally will go with the line. You're gonna play in that game with But it's possible that call in white could still get in there. Is you know there's something to be said for that. You think about calling white and his and his situation He got the contract for six years at four point. Seven five million per year and sometimes a kid When they get set up for life like that so early like he'd only played ninety four. Nhl games and he got his big long term contract based on potential. Not on accomplishment. He had a forty point season in the lead up to that but the assumption was he's going to keep moving forward and the learning curve and and his skill would all continue to evolve and So far he's been dinged up a little bit. But i have a feeling that maybe the sends decided to do this. And i'll get your reaction to it. Maybe they're trying to reset the kid and just get him hungry again. Like think of yourself. It was twenty one twenty two years old and you've only played a handful of nhl games well. Ninety four is more than a handful but as not many games and then someone hands you a long term contract like that five years. Four point seven five million a year that can sometimes take a little bit of the hunger that a kid would naturally have at that point in his career. It's so funny you say that. That's kinda it's kind of creepy When when we do the shows here when we launched in. I got a pen and a piece of paper and and you know might tend to spend so i just i just write down points that come to come. Come into my head right. I wanna when you finish that. I want to go and i just i just put down with the big dole. They're not hungry enough. And that's i borrow that from kevin lowe six times stanley cup champs longtime orleans. And he's still still with the orders and he said well when the big money started to happen that that became an apparent problem that he could see and equated it to the to the big dole saying they're not they're not going to be as hungry. They're going to be hungry. Because i'll be all right here. You know. maybe. I don't want to go into the corner there and check that guy i got i got you know making five million. Take it easy boys. You know so interesting you bring that up. Meanwhile he lost his job too. So in the eric. Carlson trade that the sands made the san jose Ottawa got their first rounder. And that was josh. Norris a centerman and there's a kid who who is hungry he's He's wildly skilled and he comes in and effectively. He took the job that call in white and also another first rounder. Logan brown were fighting for logan brown. Didn't even make the twenty three man roster white at least made it that far but the money would say that he's going to but yeah it's all about and the sends one end of the season saying this. It's all about best players play and and sometimes it's going to be some decisions that aren't real popular or some decisions that don't make sense based on what the finances are but If night in fact is the game. Plan i i i tip my hat to that best. Players play should always be the game plan and contracts. Ideally wouldn't play hand in the decision making. I wanna take a timeout on program. Here want to get to this Because as a sense in leafs get ready for their game tonight. I wanna go back and look at that toronto opener. A five four overtime win over the hab 's on opening night as a couple of angles. I wanna hit on that including fighting as coming up after we have these messages everyone knows that to get the best price on home and auto insurance. You have to shop around but who really wants to do that with access to all kinds of insurance markets. Welcome back to the show. We're just reminder if you want to connect to this please do so steve. W project outlook dot com danny comments feedback about the show. Yeah let's hear it that's our email. You can also check it our websites. Twa project dot com k. So i watched toronto's five four ot whenever montreal james now first of all toronto scored to win the game. I was really taken as i always am with. Lee fans cheering away. Like that being all happy and then i realized wait. I'm irritated right now with fake -ly fans because it has piping in the noise at that stage really all fan all the fake anyways but the ones can still get under my skin backing up. What you're saying earlier steve. But but not being hungry enough and the lowest said and all this stuff in the big dole from these kids. it's it may be. It has changed the game right where it's not it's tough and i think back to the oiler calgary rivalry and a guy like jerome mcginlay and i was talking to a friend of mine who who played minor hockey and got drafted by the oilers years ago. He's long since retired but but he was saying you know know one plays tough like they did in the old old days right where everyone played tough and again louise to see him. A lot. Right with calgary and and it was a. Wow the tough guy good player really did player so the rivalries like we were talking about yesterday. Stephen i said there no rivalries anymore. Because there's no fighting that fight li- you still there see. I am okay. That fight last night between simmons and Ben is a trod that the guy from montreal correct. I it it changed. It changed the whole mecha- the game there last night. You know and what here we go here. We go good good fight. The guy throttled them. Cool guy. He knocked the montreal guy. Down drugs got punched down to the ice and the guy let off drilled them german. Who's down on his knees and he didn't. But i was gonna go stevie talking now. We gotta rivalry right. Yeah and it still finding is still something that can turn a game around and there are lots of people in the media. A lot of fans on social media who say that fighting must be abolished and part of me is a is on board with that from the concussion standpoint and i do worry about the health of nhl players who have to fight all the time but no one is ever going to convince me of the angle of and some people do. Have this take that. A fight cannot turn a game around the sense. We're in the playoffs and twenty seventeen. Chris neal hadn't been used very much by g. Boucher the coach at that time there in a playoff series with the new york rangers and getting shoved around the rangers. Tough-guy tanner glass was out there and he was running amok and he was really intimidating. A lotta the ottawa senators. So finally g boucher. Put chris neil back in the lineup and he was only out there for one shift but he basically went out and rag doll glass for about ten seconds and all he went and he didn't get another shift in the game but the turnaround in the game and the series the came back won. The series won that game and changed the dynamic of things completely. Everybody played a little taller a little stronger. After that brief exchange between neil and glass but in other words lots of people though who said come on one shift is not gonna turn a series around you idiot totally disagree and i would invite anybody who thinks that a fight cannot turn a game around to talk to every player in that toronto dressing room last night and ask them how they felt after the wayne simmons fight. They're down three one. Simmons waxes chirac and the game changes completely right right. I agree like i was saying. They're not they're not tough enough. You know that like last night in the order game they lose by two goals was close game. They tied it up. I think the tied up in three all summer. I forget anyway. They're right in it either tight or go back and then there was a one giveaway. Okay that they're trying to trying to move the puck out of their own end The others are having trouble. It gets up to the blue line. There's a couple of guys there and dry seidel. Okay as around the puck and instead of instead of hammering the guy okay the toronto guy go for the man. Not the puck rights tv. He tries to. He tried to get his blade of his. Stick in there to grab the puck. 'cause he'd get a breakaway right. Well you know he didn't. He missed it and toronto went on to score and what he was. You know what you're supposed to do. There is hammer guy. Especially if you're the big offensive star like dry soil and latin last night's game. They were going so bad. And then i'll connor mcdavid not not not to the extent of penalty. But you're you're number one guy in your team in the league. And then he then he took a guy out you know and i was gone every goal right now. We got it. That's more like it. That's more like it. So the other angle. On the leafs inhabits on opening night of the nhl was three on three hockey and when it first came in. I was like this is pretty cool and then it got a little bored with it. But i don't know it was the best part of the game as it so frequently is i mean it was just fantastic hockey and it eclipsed the previous three periods level of entertainment. And i know that there's part of me that's a traditionalist. A purist of the game that the barks loudly when anybody says three on three hockey. That's all it's gimmicky. It's it's awful but what we walk this earth for x. amount of time and you have to think to yourself. How do i wanna invest my time. Do i wanna watch grinding five on five perfect cycles. Perfect systems and forechecking and hardly any mistakes. Do i want to watch that for three hours or do i want to watch more of the three on three entertainment which is outrageous. -ly undeniably entertaining Wash that last night and it just seemed like the older i get is a hockey fan. The more i glommed onto the notion that you know. Maybe if it's not three on three maybe four on four. I don't know but when you see like how much more compelling it becomes like him nodding off near the end of that game and then all of a sudden three on threes laser in. I gotta think jimmy that it might not happen in our lifetime someday. The highest grossing highest. Earning pro hockey league will be a three on three league or something different. That that's a little more exciting. Yeah what you know what. You're you're exactly bang on with what happens to me as well. And i bet it happens to a lot of people so you get a tie game in regulation and we're going overtime and like i bet a lot of people go like this. Okay now knowing it's okay here we go now here. We go all right and i sit up and i'm going now we're going to have some action here okay and back and forth in the montreal. Toronto game when that three on three was crazy. Good crazy good. The goal stood on their head in a bunch of attempts at went. Like i said it's zipped back and forth. It's fantastic fantastic bunch of to on one's always right in that in the three on three because you can't. You can't play defensive. Yeah you can't right it's like how. How do you defend this story. Andrea guys are spread out all over the joint right. It's good love it. I love when the three on three came in. Yup i would say i guess the only downside the only sort of am arguing against myself right now but maybe if you had a three on three league and by the way they do have a pro league that i mean. It probably won't happen now but it was scheduled to go as of june of this year called three ice. And you probably remember grant. Fuhr i think is one of the coaches. They've got a bunch of former. Nhl players in coaching And so they have a tv deal and everything i think. Cbs nt snl. Jumped on that thing. So it's i mean it possibly could work. I would caution though that maybe it would be too much of a good thing because part of what makes it so special now is that it doesn't happen all the time is very brief And it's the see. It's all the superstar players that you know and love and It decides you know the three hours of of hockey been watching. So would it be able to exist on its own as a league with nothing but three on three hard to say yeah. Well there's there's a bunch eb two. There's a bunch of stuff. There's a bunch of positive advantages. That could happen if you did that. If they made this extreme changes you know what that's all we're going to play place three hundred three okay. Three hundred so first of all. It's all about open steve. You and i both agree on that. All sports is about the offense. Okay whether you like it or not whether you're a big defensive guy and say that was a hell of a game the way they grind it back in terms of the entertainment value mean yeah. Nobody likes nobody likes it. They like they like the the big three hundred. So you got a bunch of action. Okay if you did that. Secondly steve the amount of dole. It would save you with having to sign guys right. You only have to carry twelve guys. Four lines right. It would be economically way better. You know what i think. They should try. Stevie here's what i would do. I don't know what the percentages of people who are who are three three or are con- three hundred. I don't know what it is but let's assume everyone loves the three on three. I would take the last two minutes tv or of every period and play three on three or the first two or the middle too. But i would do it at some point during every period that you'd have this three on three Regardless of what the score is okay. That that i'd love to see that last two minutes to eat or last even a minute. I don't know last ninety seconds last two minutes three hundred. You know what ten years ago. I'm i'm probably hearing that taking going. Oh how dare you. That's not how the game is played the on five. That's outrageous gimmicky. How dare you but again. The entertainment value of the three on three is undeniable. And i think that. I'm willing to experiment with things you know but that i hate that. That wouldn't be terrible. It will be and it wouldn't be dominating wouldn't be taking things over and What i don't know what the future of three on three pro hockey might be the. Nhl would be you know. It would behoove them to experiment with stuff like that because if you leave it out there and continue to showcase it as something that everybody loves. Everybody loves every night in the nhl You might find yourself With a competitor before long. Maybe this three ice thing will eventually be a competitor. I mean i can see it. Working grabbing recently retired nhl players. Who still are in great shape. There's still a name. Asia bring jerem again louder whatever Or get a get a kid like austin matthews at seventeen. He went over to europe before he was He wasn't playing these playing pro hockey in europe before he was draft eligible. Maybe grabbed those types of guys as well so names. From the youth perspective the feature superstars. But yeah i mean it's such an entertaining product that i mean the. Nhl really really has to keep an eye on it. I think given the fans what they want. Yeah the problem. Is you know what a guy will self label himself a purist of the game. You know that were you know. We can't change the rules but everyone gets along. Everyone gets used to it. Steve so a two minute warning hits we blower dead and we'd play some three on three to close out the periods. I don't hate that. I you know what i might get. I might get a gig in the head office. They may bring me as a consultant. Stevie it really meant that would be just the right amount of three on three to without taking the whole thing over a don't hate it. Don't hate it anyway Radical rule changes aside. We need to talk. Nfl because it's a big weekend in the national football league you are looking live. It's time for our nfl. Selections a busy slate of games. James last week. I won the first three games. You won the second three games on the sunday less. Kick it off green bay taken on the rams packers seven point favorite at home. I'll give you first. Pick stevie. I want to go to the intro for for my mother Backman neverthe- there was a produced intro for that number. Was nfl berry. Picking my mondays berry. Nfl very pickled jungles mother. That's right that you are looking live at the dining room table of mrs berry. Jerome and hunt club in downtown ottawa. I don't have it handy finish. Are you gonna find that. And that was great. Time for nfl. Jungle pecking with very son. Now not bad off. Nobody wants to pick you Was she was. Okay what you got. You can go first. Four games right yes. I still have the rams at green bay. And i'm glad you gave me 'cause i gave it to you i but you've given it back and so i want to cheer packers sonacare. What the line is. I do not bet against my packers for that reason. So got green bay mine. Seventy take the rams plus next game baltimore at buffalo. Buffalo is a three point favorite. I'm reading the buffalo. We've got buffalo gate. So i have all minus three over. Who who they baltimore. Baltimore plus three next game cleveland at kansas city. I think the old clock will strike midnight baker mayfield's Glass slipper falling off. That's enough of the. That's called pushing the disney analogy way too far steve. I'm gonna take. Kansas city minus nine and then finally tampa bay is at new orleans new orleans yet. New orleans is a five and a half point favorite in a in a battle of old man river in drew brees. Who is a by the way. Happy birthday as a record this. He is forty two today. And tom brady. Forty three so eighty five years of nfl quarterbacking experience and again the saints at home. A five and a half point favorite. What are you learning. "And emma feeling he might get claimed he became over in the san. Jose deal For erik karlsson and It was a massive bounty. They end up withstood. Sla and josh norris out of that deal and balancers to me is the next guy in that. That could be pretty good. The guy was like twenty two twenty three last year in belleville and thirty six points in thirty three games and So obviously the are probably gonna put him on the taxi squad before they can do that. He's got a clear waivers and was kind of disappointing to see him there but the whole season gets going tomorrow in the sense gate going on friday against toronto and this all canadian division. James is We're talking about this off. The air is going to be. I think pretty cool Whether you want to call it the canadian division the north division scotia division. It really does set things up. Nicely this inter divisional format intra divisional format. Where you're just playing teams in the division for fifty six games and there are no wildcards. It's set things up so that there's a very good chance this year. That the twenty eight year stanley cup. Canadian drought might come to an end. Because it's guaranteed that one canadian team will get to the conference final the way it lays out what is to. I think it'll be good for the old rivalry thing whichever loves you know the think back to the days of the while i go to the one right. The other flames one got ottawa. Toronto montreal montreal toronto against each other montreal or toronto against any other team The back to back games. I think is really going to rev up the rivalry right because sometimes memories are a little short if ottawa went in impounded toronto in a game but they don't play 'em for another two and a half weeks or something right. You kind of forget what happened but we have like baseball now. Everyone's playing back to back games I think depending what happens in that first game. Whoever you're cheering for you're going to tune in the next night on okay okay. They got got throttle. I'm here i hope. I think. I think it'll be good for that for the bus. Familiarity is in my opinion. Familiarity is important to storytelling. You're.

"They're all going to be a shacking up together. And that also indicates that josh norris is probably going to be here all year long. So it's a real turning of the page here in ottawa. Edmonton is undergone in recent seasons. You know you have. Some budding superstars rolling in and It's it's kind of a nice feeling when people saw tim's stood sla hit the ice today they said to themselves. This is like a new chapter. Not just for this kid but it feels like a new chapter for the franchise with so many great young prospects on the way. Yeah i can you hear me steve. I can you know as much as i i like. I'm usually. I'm usually a little down on like like like like his in down in the mouth a little bit when teams start to really promote and pump up guys. Who haven't played yet in the in the show you know that they But i think that day is gone. Now right i think the day is. That's what you're gonna do. You got your signing young guys. You're starting them in the in the nhl way younger than they used to be. But i really think you know when i watched some of that world junior and whenever i hear you know well this is going to be a great year because we got this guy. Take it easy now. Easy fellas. But i got. I got to admit steve. I think i think this thing with ottawa. And this kid with auto. I heard in a couple of interviews during the during the world juniors and then of course you know how good he is right and then named the best player and particularly came back from the seventeen thousand. Nothing game. But i really. I'm really interested in this. I think it's a great. I think it's a fantastic thing for the sense yeah. I don't know why i've been you know every year right. There's someone off matthews member when the guy came and he got four points remember in the first first game when he played in and after mind sends fans of that. It wasn't four points. It was four goals but by the way. Toronto lost the game. Somehow oh it was against audible. Yup oh i can right here in ottawa. I didn't know was screaming right. It was like okay. This is now. He's a great player and all that but we know how is done playoff wise. Yes been there anyway. This could be really good. This could be really good. You know. I think and the reason i think steve is because they're prepping kids a lot you know. They're they're preparing them a lot. More now to play in the nhl at are at a really young age. I think it has to do with fitness a lot to do with sports psychology. A lot to do with mentoring a lot to do with you know. When i say mentoring i mean all all kinds of from other players. I think they're paying a lot more attention to it. Because i know one of the one of the issues with connor mcdavid. Who's who's arguably the best player game was. He wasn't very good in the dressing room not with with a everyone outside of the players so he didn't some of the he didn't know that some of the trainers names for a while and he was so painfully shy right so they have to sort of straighten them out but help help them with it because a lot of these kids know nothing else. Steve but hockey. Yeah right and so. They don't have social skills and they don't they don't have they don't have a balance here to figure out..
