They needed to do a deal like this where they just take on futures that they don't have to pay for now and just get off of Jacob chicken's contract, which in and of itself is such a sad way to think about this thing because you're talking about a 25 year old defender who's in his prime who's really good, who's making half of what he probably should be on the open market and you're viewing it as like, this is a bit too pricey for us. I think we need to cut some costs here. Let's save the coyotes conversation for us for a bit down the road here because it's another whole separate issue, but from the senator's perspective, I get the risk of, all right. If they missed the playoffs again, this is too straight years where they trade a first for Alex to bring. They trade a first for Jacob Chico. They're running out of runway with cheap ELC or similar to what we're talking about with the Canucks where Jake Sanderson has one war. They've already paid Josh Norris. They've already paid Brady could shock. They've already paid Tim stutzle. They've paid Thomas Shabbat, right? They've already not boxed themselves in but like they're paying for a lot of these young players and they don't have the team success yet. That's to show for it, right? And so you're wondering whether it's from a timing perspective the right timeline, whether it makes sense, I guess I don't want to be speaking out of both sides of my mouth here because the senators aren't necessarily that far ahead of the Canucks in terms of their place in the league hierarchy. But I do like that they went and at least got a cost controlled 25 year old defenseman taking even though they're not in that dissimilar position. I know that they're much closer to the playoffs this year. There is risk involved, but I just maybe what's clouding my judgment is the fact that I feel like I'm on the extreme end of my Jacob sugar and evaluation. Because even if i'm saying cockpits can hit eight seventy five like it is risky and you know george gidell's hitting that you like beyond that if he stays healthy like that's the biggest thing but if he stays healthy. I mean he's going to destroy that number. So yes and speaking of burke's like brandon uk's rookie season is getting so overshadowed because yeltsin jefferson had just an absolutely amazing rookie season like broke all those records. But that does not defeat why brandon. I did like we should not be just overlooking that. He led all rookies and targets per game. He had the second most receptions per game receiving yards per game just behind justin jefferson. He was one of five rookie wide. Receivers to average five receptions for game since twenty ten and the other four. Were odell beckham. Michael thomas justin jefferson jarvis landry and all of those guys. I ended up having ninety five plus receptions and were selected to the pro bowl in their second season so the first three that i guess we have to see what justin jefferson does because he was just last year as well but odom michael. Thomas jarvis landry all had over ninety five receptions in their second year. I think brandon i. You can be like. I know you're worried. He's the next dante pettis lashing us but not they patterson do close to what you did in your one and i do think he's way more talented coming out of school. I think you have a true superstar here at the wide receiver position. Deebo samuel can be your tough. Do like your juju income bolden but you have a true superstar in brandon. Iu and we're overlooking just because justin jefferson destroyed the season. It's clear to me. That brandon is the more complete wide receiver like brandon. I you can run. The jet sweep plays and running. Plays the deebo. Samuel can can run and he also can run routes and get open deep like so. He's like deebo plus now he's not as physical as depot dude is just. He's just a monster. But i i love the skill. Set that brandon has now never forget. Kyle shanahan's reaction when they drafted him in the first round he was like outwardly like steering and celebrating and this was in a wide receiver class. That was absolutely loaded. When i saw that i was like one kyle was a wide receiver in college. He's an offensive genius as a playcaller clearly knows the position so for him to be that excited. We must have gotten a stud and like you're saying right now. Everything points to him being that good. Yeah we're we're seeing that now the jets. When they took a more he was gone. 'cause i feel like they never have that guy on their team. They're like a running defensive team. That's who the jets have been. Because i feel like he more than anybody else on offense was held back by just the disaster of a situation at quarterback. I feel like if he had any sort of consistency there. He would have flashlight. Justin jefferson maybe not to that extent but he would have thrust himself into the conversation on the national stage. There's so many great pieces on your offense because they were just kind of throwing deebo samuel to the side but he is an awesome offense of weapon like you want him on your offense. I don't want him a fantasy but that doesn't mean he's not great for nfl team and then where he moster. Who missed eight games last year. Like he's so good when he's action the he opens up everything to he can. He is a guy who can get a massive chunk. Play for you. And that's not normal for the forty niners. You need him on the field. He's averaging five point four yards per carry since twenty nineteen. That leads the nfl. For guys. i have over one hundred fifty carries since twenty nineteen That's a lotta guys. And he leads the nfl in yards per carry like. He's so good he's also just a player. I mean this is the theme of the podcast. Stay healthy and that's why they drafted trae sermon. And i 'cause i feel like kyle just if you looked at kyle shanahan last year. He aged in dog years like it was he did rent you like it. Just took it out of them. All sunny started growing. The beard appeared started growing in like all grey. It was just an absolute gut punch for him last year. And i think his message to john lynch and everybody in that organization was like this can not happen to us again. He even said the injuries hit us before cova. Did they've built in redundancies in the entire roster. You mentioned it quarterback now running back you look. They have traced sermon and they drafted ally mitchell and they brought in wayne gaughman. You look at the offensive line. They drafted two guards on the offensive line to really try and shore up the interior of the line. They're they're bringing in defensive lineman like crazy like they have the debt that defensive line that is going to serve them so well this year as they try to keep everybody fresh and rotated. They basically have redundancies. Built in an injury insurance so to speak built in on almost every position except for linebacker and secondary but other than that they are doing everything they can to try and avoid just the absolute train wreck that was last year. Yeah and you're so right. Shanahan looked so rough at the end of that season. Like if you look at a picture of him before he became the forty niners head coach. After it's like it's only been forty years dude like what happened to you. He's aging like a president. Yeah he really is horman format because he's a cute guy but yeah it's the his face just looks like sunken in mike just so tired all right so the now you mentioned that. He's a cute guy so now i have to ask who is the best looking. Nfl head coaches. it cooked kingsbury. Yeah it has to be single. Because i know a lot of women think he is like devastatingly. Good looking he seems like alright a fine looking human. But i don't think he's like he's jimmy. Garoppolo say no. I don't think i wouldn't look at him. Oh god he's so hot but if when you're being compared to other nfl coaches. It's not very hard like there's not very many great. Nfl looking head coaches yeah. "Decided yet. That's the big question to me. You have thirty five people who haven't out of the ninety. You need twenty two out of that thirty five to decide to do something that they could have already done at this point. I just don't see that happening. And there is an interesting aspect of this that i think could become part of the nfl storyline of the twenty twenty one season. Not just for the forty niners but the nfl. Large the whole reason why we're talking about eighty five percent is because at eighty five percent a bunch of restrictions put on by the league are lifted. You can. You don't have to wear masks around each other. You can have team meetings in your normal conference room where everybody's next to each other rather than through zoom you can basically mingle and hang out a bit more and that makes you closer in. That helps win games in all honesty. And kyle mentioned those things that he would really like to be able to do those things so i wonder if this becomes something that mo- among all. Nfl locker rooms becomes a rift of sorts. Because you're going to have some teams meet the eighty five percent and i think you're probably gonna have a majority of teams not quite meet eighty five percent of the players who did get vaccinated. Sit around the locker room staring these other guys down going. I have to wear those masks. Because of you i have to go home and do a zoom conference rather than being able to sit in the damn team conference room because of you like i think. There is potential for some rifts and locker rooms that have this happen and we do have a precursor to this major league. Baseball is very similar policy. There's eighty percent and you have seen certain players. Gm speak out a little bit one of them being the cubs gm. Jed hoyer actually spoke out and said he's disappointed in his players that they have not met the eighty percent yet and thus they can't do certain things that would give them a competitive advantage. And i think that's going to be the case in the nfl. I think that everything you said is completely logical. I think it naturally will happen like you said 'cause when guys decisions affect other people's lives that's when rifts tend to form it's just it's amazing to me because you would think if there was one team that would be more willing to get vaccinated just to avoid all the extra precautions that you have to take. It would be this team. It would be the team that got kicked out of their city and their stadium and had to go and finish the season at arizona because of covert not arguably was more inconvenience from football operations standpoint last year than the forty niners. So if you had to tell me that. I could pick one team to bet on that was going to reach that threshold. I thought it would bend san francisco. But i guess not and to be honest levin. Getting there no you know. I'll be curious to see. Because i don't think there's definite policy on this. I could be wrong because honestly the nfl hasn't said much about it nor have nfl teams but does it affect travel. You know this past year teams flew in and played pretty much. Same day you know. They flew a day later the normal. They didn't get as much time to adjust to wherever they were going. So i'm wondering if you don't meet the eighty five percent if you still have to follow that policy and thus there is an actual a huge competitive advantage to the teams the do me eighty five percent and can follow a more traditional timeline. I just on twitter. Eleven sam darnold said he's not been vaccinated yet quote. There's a ton of different things that go into it. S somebody on twitter. Charles mcdonnell actually just joined us on the espionage Nfl show. He said what different things go into it. Then josh norris followed that tweet up with can we blame adam gates for this too. I just thought that was a masterful job by everybody involved. And i wanted to point that out. Yeah and that's what we're getting out. I mean this whole. Kobe thing is one of the topics this week in the nfl. Large because montas sweep had about as dumb of a response as you can get. In my opinion he said that he is not vaccinated yet because he's never gotten cova did and until he gets cova he doesn't feel like he needs the vaccine. That's not how it works. It's not a cure. It's a vaccine. it helps prevent you from getting it. It's not a oh. I have covert better. Go get that shot. So i don't die like and the best part was he was asked about that because washington had brought in experts to help educate the players on the vaccine and provide more facts and they asked how that was a month sweets reaction was. I didn't like that at all on his rant about how. He's not getting the vaccine until he gets cool but it's like because then he followed it up by saying because there's not enough facts known about the vaccine like. Yeah that's why the brought the expert in the teach you everything they know like clearly didn't listen if you think the vaccine cure so yeah monta sweat. Here is the full exchange. I probably won't get vaccinated until i get more facts and all that type of stuff. I'm not a fan of it at all. Which seemingly contradictory because the expert is the one who would have the facts he was asked. What is your hesitation with getting the vaccine quote. I haven't caught cova yet. I don't see me treating. I don't see me treating cove until i actually get covert k. Again as you pointed out that's not how it works. You talked to the coaching staff about the vaccine presentation. obviously they want everybody to be vaccinated to move more freely around the facility and with traveling and all that type of stuff but everybody has their own belief san. They're entitled to their own decision next question. How much has there been discussion in the locker room. Just about all of that. Meaning vaccines quote. We talk about it all the time amongst my peers and that type of stuff. A lot of it is going on today. It's a constant conversation that we are always talking about. I don't understand it that shows that there could be a big rift. Teams are talking about it. The players are talking about it amongst themselves. I mean i talk about work. You know who is talked about. When the vaccines i started rolling out at my workplace and my workplace isn't really affected by whether or not you know people get vaccinated like the nfl. I think there is a very big potential for risk to be caused in certain. You know. I think basically they're talking about it. That means that there's a chance that once the season comes if they keep talking about it that somebody crosses the line and gets mad or loses their temper and goes off on the people who haven't gotten vaccinated and that creates the rift that creates locker room that has to choose sides. Everything goes into the bucket and everything simmers and like john madden called winning the ultimate deodorant and if teams are winning and everything's great. Maybe it doesn't come up when stuff starts to go south. Everything is a factor all the contributing factors bubble up. And i agree with you. I think that at some point it's gonna come out like hey maybe you would have known the damn play if you could have been in the meeting room instead of on zoom because you didn't get vaccinated like i. It's very easy to me that that stuff could happen right. Winning teams probably aren't going to have a rift form. So yeah maybe the cowboys. Ever rift form tokyo specs into murder. "Guys New guy this new head pro or whatever or the or whoever's harassing him sounds like there have been on the greasy side. Yeah yeah and he didn't go to a labor lawyer which a lot of them will do right and file a wrongful dismissal suit and all that stuff and you know. Meanwhile there was a neat story as well Real heartwarming kind of a story and pertains of the ottawa senators. For those who don't fall the sense that most people who listen to this show but they have a rookie by the name of tim. Stutz ladies the third overall draft pick in the most recent draft. And he's been very good for the sins they could parlay his stats over a full season over eighty two games. He'd be a forty six point guy and for the youngest full-time player in the entire. Nhl that's hell season and it's only gonna get better. So he gets against winnipeg on saturday. He gets his first. Nhl hat trick but of course you lose something something in terms of the celebration because no fans to throw their hats on the ice and so not a tragedy no big thing really but it would have been kind of cool and so tim stood slush shares a townhouse with brady shock where a duplex with brady shock. And josh norris. Talk about three future superstar players all living together and I guess the neighborhood kids all got together. It was only i guess could check talked to a few neighbors and stuff and supposed to be just a few kids but it built it built all kinds of momentum and all these other kids showed up so it looked like maybe twenty kids all armed with about ten hats a piece right and they stood in the backyard of tim. "You'll know better than i. What year that was. But he put up some decent stats. Yeah they get twenty five goal season. I think yeah you know. Econo- browns of same type of player honest hardworking guy got a little bit of skill on the offensive side. Definitely has a high hockey. I q and can play anywhere near light up. And he's the kind of guy you need if you're going to win you just don't want him on your top line regularly. You don't even want him on your second line regularly. You were playing on a top two or three team in the league He's probably playing on the third line if he's on the first line it's only because he's there to as defensive presence with two studs otherwise third-line guide so thou you have to factor in all right. How much do we pay third-line guy and that's where you might have a bit of a problem here Down the road on. I'm not sure you were trying to remember what it is. That he voided. What is he making right now. Do you remember. I think he's around three and a half three eight You're absolutely right. He's making three six. So that's not bad like not a problem at all with that kind of money. I hear everything you're saying. I still maintain an. He certainly can help. Be a defensive presence. But i also think that there's a chance that that guy 'cause even more than jj pozo he's creating all the time you've mentioned before about. Does that guy dr. "And this team was in transition much like the senators are so on that team either. Twenty or twenty one years. Old was ron francis. Myself kevin dineen. Oh samuelson dean everson. Paul mcdermott paul. Long all guys it play a long time in the nhl and we got our teeth kicked in for a lot of that year. We finished the year off ten into the next year. We made the playoffs and upset quebec in the first round loss to montreal in game seven of the adams division final but the turning point was that time when it didn't really look like we were getting better. We were all getting better. We were all learning the league. We're all kind of figuring it out even though it looked ugly and there's been some ugly nights for the senators. Yeah but now. Bathrooms got four goals in five games. Josh norris looks like he could be number two center. Brady contracts their captain. Thomas chabad is a brilliant. Young young player can matt. Murray give them goaltending because in that first year. What we did was we traded for michael. You'd and he gave us goaltending. Gave us a veteran presence of matt. Marie can do that. They're well on their way in ottawa. But i think they're going to finish seventh anyway this year. And that's okay. It is okay all right. Time to wrap up episode eleven. Well now disney has ruled in and Yup we're gonna make a movie out of this thing. I guess dave has said that james corden called him of the late night comedian called him shortly after the win. Discuss making a movie about it airs then connected with creative artists agency and at least twenty four different production companies apparently expressed interest in it and They narrowed it down. Twenty four than to twelve and a now. The whole disney thing is happening and airs. Says he's told he's going to be a producer and he's going to help with writing the script that's pretty crazy stuff. I mean as if he already hasn't had the thrill of a lifetime now he's got a movie based on this story. Yeah when when the story broke right when it happened it was so cool right it was. I mean it went viral right for about a month. Yeah everyone was talking about it and everyone said you know this stuff. Movies are made right. Yup this but i said no no. No there's not enough here to make a movie relax. Everybody just relax okay. I know what happened. The guy came in and was super cool. But but no. It's not no. I need more for my movie law. I'm wrong. I read that piece. You just read this morning. The guy's not only steve. Do they have twenty four production of fits or companies that they gotta pick from that's who they narrowed it down to was twenty four. They had more way more than that. Couple of big stories that happened after we recorded and one is that the senate defeated montreal for in overtime really fun hockey game at the c. T. c. sends improved to four and two in their license games and the starting to resemble a pretty decent hockey team. We talked earlier about the revenge. Thing that maybe the sands of god for blood against the haves particularly after that spear on. Tim stood slow right in the neck. That never actually went down but it was a hell of a hockey game pond hockey at times Say the nhl would win a lot of fans a lot new fans with games like that. It had lots of storylines. But i don't know it was the best part of the game as it so frequently is i mean it was just fantastic hockey and it eclipsed the previous three periods level of entertainment. And i know that there's part of me that's a traditionalist. A purist of the game that the barks loudly when anybody says three on three hockey. That's all it's gimmicky. It's it's awful but what we walk this earth for x. amount of time and you have to think to yourself. How do i wanna invest my time. Do i wanna watch grinding five on five perfect cycles. Perfect systems and forechecking and hardly any mistakes. Do i want to watch that for three hours or do i want to watch more of the three on three entertainment which is outrageous. -ly undeniably entertaining Wash that last night and it just seemed like the older i get is a hockey fan. The more i glommed onto the notion that you know. Maybe if it's not three on three maybe four on four. I don't know but when you see like how much more compelling it becomes like him nodding off near the end of that game and then all of a sudden three on threes laser in. I gotta think jimmy that it might not happen in our lifetime someday. The highest grossing highest. Earning pro hockey league will be a three on three league or something different. That that's a little more exciting. Yeah what you know what. You're you're exactly bang on with what happens to me as well. And i bet it happens to a lot of people so you get a tie game in regulation and we're going overtime and like i bet a lot of people go like this. Okay now knowing it's okay here we go now here. Nhl players in coaching And so they have a tv deal and everything i think. Cbs nt snl. Jumped on that thing. So it's i mean it possibly could work. I would caution though that maybe it would be too much of a good thing because part of what makes it so special now is that it doesn't happen all the time is very brief And it's the see. It's all the superstar players that you know and love and It decides you know the three hours of of hockey been watching. So would it be able to exist on its own as a league with nothing but three on three hard to say yeah. Well there's there's a bunch eb two. There's a bunch of stuff. There's a bunch of positive advantages. That could happen if you did that. If they made this extreme changes you know what that's all we're going to play place three hundred three okay. Three hundred so first of all. It's all about open steve. You and i both agree on that. All sports is about the offense. Okay whether you like it or not whether you're a big defensive guy and say that was a hell of a game the way they grind it back in terms of the entertainment value mean yeah. Nobody likes nobody likes it. They like they like the the big three hundred. So you got a bunch of action. Okay if you did that. Secondly steve the amount of dole. It would save you with having to sign guys right. You only have to carry twelve guys. Four lines right. It would be economically way better. You know what i think. They should try. Stevie here's what i would do. I don't know what the percentages of people who are who are three three or are con- three hundred. I don't know what it is but let's assume everyone loves the three on three. I would take the last two minutes tv or of every period and play three on three or the first two or the middle too. But i would do it at some point during every period that you'd have this three on three Regardless of what the score is okay. That that i'd love to see that last two minutes to eat or last even a minute. I don't know last ninety seconds last two minutes three hundred. You know what ten years ago. I'm i'm probably hearing that taking going. Oh how dare you. That's not how the game is played the on five. That's outrageous gimmicky. How dare you but again. The entertainment value of the three on three is undeniable. And i think that. I'm willing to experiment with things you know but that i hate that. That wouldn't be terrible. It will be and it wouldn't be dominating wouldn't be taking things over and What i don't know what the future of three on three pro hockey might be the. Nhl would be you know. It would behoove them to experiment with stuff like that because if you leave it out there and continue to showcase it as something that everybody loves. Everybody loves every night in the nhl You might find yourself With a competitor before long. Maybe this three ice thing will eventually be a competitor. I mean i can see it. Working grabbing recently retired nhl players. Who still are in great shape. There's still a name. Asia bring jerem again louder whatever Or get a get a kid like austin matthews at seventeen. He went over to europe before he was He wasn't playing these playing pro hockey in europe before he was draft eligible. Maybe grabbed those types of guys as well so names. "They're all going to be a shacking up together. And that also indicates that josh norris is probably going to be here all year long. So it's a real turning of the page here in ottawa. Edmonton is undergone in recent seasons. You know you have. Some budding superstars rolling in and It's it's kind of a nice feeling when people saw tim's stood sla hit the ice today they said to themselves. This is like a new chapter. I think they're paying a lot more attention to it. Because i know one of the one of the issues with connor mcdavid. Who's who's arguably the best player game was. He wasn't very good in the dressing room not with with a everyone outside of the players so he didn't some of the he didn't know that some of the trainers names for a while and he was so painfully shy right so they have to sort of straighten them out but help help them with it because a lot of these kids know nothing else.
