"So I think Pittsburgh and Vegas specifically are still like, hey, our season's not over. They're having all those conversations. And Baltimore, offensively is pretty impotent. And now Huntley's in for Lamar, but even they shouldn't have won that Denver game. And Denver had 90 chances to put away. And as usual, they didn't, but Baltimore is about fourth in DVA, but the rest of the way at Pittsburgh at Cleveland, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, at Cincinnati. And I think I said this Sunday and I think even, I believe it even more strongly. I think Baltimore or Miami doesn't make the playoffs. And my money would be on Baltimore, but I think one of those two teams slide out. This happens every year in December. There's a team that's 8 and four falls off a core 8 5, whatever, and they just all of a sudden you're like, wow, they didn't make it. And I think it's going to be one of those two. So then you're saying that either the Patriots, the Raiders, the charts, not the pets. Or the Steelers is going to do this. So I think we're putting the jets in? Yeah, I think you have to assume the jets are it's got to be one of those teams is out. Maybe the jets are at the really think it could be jets raiders. Because then the thing with Vegas and we're taping this before they played in it, but I assume I would say it's a safe bet they're going to beat the John wofford with a neck injury rams. Or baker, baker baker, even better for them. But yeah, their schedules pretty doable. And I texted Lombardi during the Sunday game about how people, what are people going to say with Josh McDaniels is 9 and 7 playing for a playoff spot. Everybody was trying to drive the airport. So anyway, I think the thing with them though, that I love and obviously just full disclosure, but Mike's son Mick is the offensive court of the Raiders, so it's obviously close to him. They have so many good skill position players. The Raiders remaining schedule, they have a game against the Steelers. They have a game against the Patriots. The final two weeks for the Raiders, which is really interesting. Home, San Francisco home, Kansas City. There is a chance or a world that those teams aren't looking to start all their guys in the final two weeks. Yeah, they might have three seed, that's it. And that's it. Because that gives Seattle loses a couple, then San Francisco is like, cool, we're cruising. Hey deebo, sit out week 17 and all that track. William, sit down, kittle, rest. That could actually be a great advantage. I love this theory this week. I worry it's a whiff too obvious, but I liked it on Sunday Night. I think they're pretty good. I think they have good skill guys on both sides. TJ watt back Fitzpatrick's always kind of lingering around. The team. And I'd like to receivers. It feels like the receivers can make kind of two 30 yard plays a game that can swing a drive. And by the way, pick it's not bad. It's gotten better. For two straight months, been watching it. Like Pickett's like, I would say even like a shade above average. He was a turnover machine. They go on the buy. He comes out of the buy. And he hasn't thrown any picks. He's been really focused, really. Moves around a bit. Honestly, if you said, who would you rather that Mac or pick it? I think I would take picket. That's fair. I don't think that's crazy. Yeah.

"Yeah, yeah, the more I've thought about this game throughout the day, the more one, I honestly believe this is another must win for buffalo because of the Vaughn injury. I honestly, they need the home field advantage and I think their chances of gaining home field advantage go up a ton tonight with the win. The more I think about this game, I get overly concerned about this game for buffalo in specifically Josh. So if you watch that first game against the jets, Marcus talked about the interceptions, the 5 sacks of the pass rush. And then I remember our C and I doing a breakdown of Josh just being impatient, right? Like trying to curb the competitiveness of pushing the ball downfield, making the big play. And last week he had to play without his left tackle, Dion Dawkins. And I don't know if he's going to play this week or not. The truth of this matchup is this. The Jets have a massive advantage. Defensive line to buffalo's offensive line. Massive. My concern is this. It's Dawkins doesn't play Josh automatically goes to. I got to do whatever to win this game. Superman mode to win this game is a very fine line for him. And if he goes too far past it and get himself into big, big trouble against a really good defense, it's going to be pertinent paramount that he kind of focuses on not going too far with his mindset of doing too much. All right, let's get back to tonight as we get to Thursday Night Football rams and raiders. We check back in with the Domino's pregame headquarters getting you ready for this game and SoFi Stadium. Ready for a big one. Marcus, who do you have tonight and why? Guys, I gotta be honest. I never thought I would pick the Raiders to win a game this season. Based on how they looked early in the year. I never thought that I would have them as the favorite against anybody. But the rams are struggling even worse in the Raiders have thought to pick this thing up, finding themselves. I was ready to fire Josh McDaniels and say he'd need to go back and be an OT, but devonte Adams has found this groove dear car and him has built that rapport and obviously what Dan pointed to with Josh Jacobs. I got the Raiders in this. Yeah, I've got the Raiders as well. They won last week for two reasons. Devonta Adams and that pass rush and that pass rush max Crosby and Chandler Jones has another tasty matchup this week because they go against of course the rams offensive line full of backups. I expect them to get home and I think Vegas will win as a result. This is easiest picking a year is the Raiders. The Raiders, first of all, Josh Jacobs. Second of all, devonta Adams. Third of all, there are other playing against a third string quarterback that has an ankle injury on a short week. Or a guy they just picked up off the street two days ago. This is the easiest picking and the Raiders is that must win and they will win it. Trying to be confident in my pick. Having a tough time. Shut up. Yeah, I'm picking the rams, guys. Boogie. Change your pick. Yeah. Well, I don't know, guys. Maybe like, no, I'm not gonna be right. I'm not gonna be right, but maybe I will be. Okay, what if baker made you? You don't have to sacrifice yourself. I do sacrifice. That's how much I love you guys, okay? Sacrifice myself. But here's the reality. I'm fully prepared to eat crow tomorrow and I'm sure I will be. But what if Baker Mayfield comes to this game and like gets it going? I don't know. I watch NFL live tomorrow because if

"Different. Is it that easy that you in 24 hours could go and start for the rams and be able to play tonight? No, it's not that easy. It's not. Now, he has a little bit of an advantage or at least maybe some chance to make things work and man, this is quite the uphill battle, is that he at least has been in two places that are rooted in this West Coast system, right? So with the Kevin Stefanski, even Ben mcadoo and Carolina this year, it's all in the same tree as what McVeigh learned. Now it's just the ability so a lot of the rules will be the same. But it's the ability to transition the language in your offense, Dan, where like, hey, double slant might have been bangle, right? For like the last year or whatever. But now they call it lying or it's instances like that. So it's gonna be your ability to wait, spit the spit the play out in the huddle, and then organize it all in your brain as you're walking the line of scrimmage. Give me an example of a play you called in Tampa and then a play you called in Denver. The exact same play. But what would be the difference if I'm in the huddle with you? Oh, okay. And then that would be a harder transition. This is why I give it somewhat of a chance because McDaniels and the Denver offense, the New England, the Raiders now. It was totally different. And I laughed with this about Derek Carr earlier in the year because it might have been, let's say, we might have called, you're making me on the spot here trying to figure out how to play here. But like where Gruden, it might have been double wing right 200 jet Vegas. Let's say it's 200 jet Vegas. And now within 200 jet Vegas, we had a double slam on the backside and on the front side we hit a slant and a flat route, right? So there's that play. In, man, I gotta remember what the hell they call this, but in Josh McDaniels offense, it would have been like zero flood slot 360 four tosser slant flat, right? So it's a little bit different. Tosser was too slams. Right. And I could probably have better examples here, but I'm choking under the damn pressure. Now you see why I wasn't that great of a quarterback right there. But that's a lot to pick up. Can you simplify? I'd say dumbed down, but I don't know if that's fair to Baker Mayfield. But how does Sean mcvay simplify this that Baker Mayfield could start tonight? Right. Well, I think, you know, he gets to the, I think the offense is somewhat dumbed down or simplified right now without Matthew Stafford anyways. And you know, having to play Bryce Perkins, who's a young quarterback and learning his way in the NFL. I think they've had to go there a little bit too. So what you do is, hey, baker, you know, here's the plays we had in for the game plan tonight. You know, which ones are you comfortable within your mind where you feel like you know the rules, you know the language and you can kind of spit it out. And I think he could keep it simple that way. I mean, it's not easy. By any stretch of the imagination, it's not, but like I said, because it's a similar offensive structure there. It might be doable. I just can't imagine I'm looking real pretty. If I would have told you in August Baker Mayfield will be the ram starting quarterback Russell Wilson will be the quarterback of the worst offense in football. Jalen hurts and tua will be MVP candidates and the lions will have a better record than the rams or the packers. Which one would you have said? No. Oh, probably the Lions having a better record than the rams in the packers. That'd probably be the one that jumps out. You said a lot of good ones there. But with the two and the hertz thing, I saw the potential with the team a little bit. And I had said some things I gave them. This could be dangerous. Watch out for this. You know, what was the first one you said there? Baker is the starting quarterback for the rams. Yeah. Of course, I never would have thought that. But also I do think it's so Wilson. Yes, yes. Dan, that's probably the leader in the Clubhouse right there. Right? That was going to be Aaron Rodgers was going to slide in there and all that unleashed all of that potential. Yes, and it's not even close. And you know me, I'm not always about putting the blame on the quarterback and all that stuff, but I have a little bit of a soft spot for Nathaniel Hackett. And I understand he hasn't done everything right here, but that's plain and simple. You watch every Broncos game, are you not every game, but you've seen the ones that are on national TV. I said here in a few videos on social and things like that where it's just bad. I mean, it's as bad as it can get. And Denver's had to actually dial back the offense even more and make it more simple to kind of help him out and make it work. But I never would have thought I saw a guy that was kind of on a Hall of Fame trajectory to clearly being the worst quarterback in this division that that's another one that's a pretty big shocker up there with the Lions better record than the packers and rams. Okay, if I say more likely going into the Hall of Fame, Russell Wilson. Matthew Stafford. Oh. I guess how is this a question? I'm not gonna count Russell. I'm gonna still go with Russell. Well, I also is the guy not Matthew Stafford. Well, I see how I hold Matthew Stafford in a higher regard, you know, then maybe the most of the rest of the public of the world. That's where I just so I view him maybe a little higher than everybody else because I know the crap he was involved with in Detroit for such a long time. Yeah, but even when they went to the Super Bowl Stafford led the NFL in interceptions. That's okay. He also was one of the leaders in touchdowns and the interception things getting blown out. The quarterbacks ever up there and interceptions last year where all the all the quarterbacks that were, you know, towards the final four in the final 8 of football, too. So he was aggressive. He does do some dumb things every now and then, but yeah, I'm still gonna go with Russell Wilson, and his work ethic, what I've seen. I mean, Stafford is more talented. Yes. As a thrower for sure. Yes, he is. But Russ is a 9 time pro bowler, went to two super bowls, I mean, it feels like there's recency bias that's hurting Russell Wilson right now. Well, I don't disagree with that, but you know, I always play the game too of like, well, what would Matthew Stafford's life look like if he got to go play with the legion of boom and hand it off to Marshawn Lynch and win a Super Bowl by really being a game manager, but we go hey, he won a Super Bowl. And you go, well, damn, actually I think about it. I mean, Russell, did he do anything that? You know, special that year? No, and then it was kind of the next year where they started to go more in on him and he started to make plays and do that. But I certainly think Matthew Stafford's career trajectory and I think we lose this sometimes and would be a lot different. He went to a place where we all look at until just here about three weeks ago to go, places his disaster. It's been a disaster ever since I was alive, except for like two or three years. And other than that, it's been bad. So, you know, that hurts his chances there as well. He's Chris Simms, pro football talk live co host, with our good buddy, Mike florio, and a contributor to

"If Josh McDaniels was going to be able to hold onto his job. You would think this would be an easy win for the Raiders. You would think, but you know, they go into this game. They got weapons. Josh Jacobs has been unbelievable and is crazy as it may sound. The Las Vegas Raiders may not be dead just yet. Polygamy the schedule for the Raiders moving forward. Raiders tonight that had the ramps 6 and a half point favorite. They will be favored as of right now, hosting the Patriots next week. They will be at the Steelers versus the forty-niners with a backup quarterback. A third string quarterback, and then to end the season versus the chiefs in a game the chiefs may not need. Which would be interesting if the chiefs may be rested starters and the Raiders needed that game. But right now, 5 and 7 going into this game. If you had to bet on one to make the Hall of Fame, Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson. Wow. This was a no brainer last year. Because I would have said Russell Wilson, even though Matthew Stafford had his Super Bowl, but I think the consistency with Russell Wilson probably would have overshadowed Matthew Stafford, going to two super bowls, yes, did throw the ill advised ass. Food. Yeah, pulling. This is a faux poll question. I wrote it to get the pause reaction from the room. This should actually not be close whatsoever. If you look at their careers, Matthew Stafford is an under 500 quarterback who made one pro ball. We're also Wilson is a guy who's one O 7 and 61 in his career. Bent to super bowls and is a 9 time pro bowler and has 300 touchdowns to 92 picks, but the recency bias affected that poll question. Matthew Stafford he's got Super Bowl and he's injured so it's not his fault to ram stink. And Russell Wilson's having by far the worst season of his career, not even close, but their careers aren't really that close. But we always gave Stafford credit not blame when the Lions didn't make the playoffs. He would be like, man, he fell through for 5000 yards. What's he supposed to do? Yeah. What's he supposed to do? That it feels like this is pile on Russell Wilson. And people are still piling on. What if I said in August? Baker Mayfield will be the starting quarterback for the rams. Russell Wilson will be the quarterback of the worst offense in football. Two former Alabama quarterbacks will be MVP candidates in Jalen hurts and two a ton of iloa, and the lions will have a better record than the rams and the packers and the Cardinals. What would be the most far fetched on there? I would say Baker Mayfield would be the ram starting quarterback. Because you would go, okay, what happened to Matthew Stafford, and then what happened with Baker Mayfield, the browns, and then Carolina, and that he would be the starting quarterback as well. I thought the Lions were going to be on the cusp of being a playoff team. And they may end up with 8 wins this year, which would be saying a lot. Russ, with that offense, that surprising hurts and tua. I don't think it's as far fetched. We saw glimpses of Jalen tua would be the one that would be the outlier here where I might go, wow, MVP Canada. But he's been. And he should be. What else do we have this morning? I got a couple from Todd, if you want to uncork those. Okay. I mean, okay. Wow. Nice enthusiasm. Well, I never know if it's tongue in cheek. Usually it kind of tongue in cheek. Okay, but I didn't see these yet. You have not. They're not inappropriate or anything, but I think they're cute. Because you sent me some inappropriate ones. I did. Earlier today. Yes. But you did send those to me. I did. That was good. Okay. All right, all right. So you're not inappropriate poll question? If Baker Mayfield starts for the rams tonight, I'm more likely to watch. I'm less likely to watch. I'm watching Monday night flip over regardless of who the QBs are. Well, to be tough because it's Thursday night. That's awesome. I'm watching Thursday Night Football. I don't want you to go, where's choke on Troy Aikman? I'm glad you brought that to my texture. Thursday Night Football. And you wrote that down. I wrote I'm watching M and F regardless for the few bees are. It wasn't like you were going off the top of your head. You wrote that. I was reading it off with something. And then I love nothing better that you didn't correct him when he sent this to you. I would never have realized that unless you guys brought it up. Okay. Well, I'm watching, but baker playing starting makes it a more intriguing matchup. And the fact that it is a Monday night game on Thursday night. That's a good question. That's fascinating. It was Troy Aikman. Yeah, wait, what's Al Michael's doing on this game? He seemed to find this game tonight. Do you have any other poll questions? Do you have the one was on Steve Curran a tough loss against the jazz? If a reporter asks you what happened in the final moments of a game you just lost, you should understand the journalist is just doing his or her job and explain what went wrong as best you can, or have an attitude and say, you watched, you're asking me what happened? I probably need the sound of this to go along with your poll question. Probably. Do we have Steve Kerber? I would hope. That was one of the highlights of the night. Marv, do we have Steve? So it's on Marvin now. Yeah, putting him on the street. This is all about MVD. Everybody's setting each other up. Nobody told Todd about his typo, Todd didn't tell Marvin about the sound. It is getting ugly right now. It is getting ugly. Wow. Ruthless. Wow. Ruthless. Is there a subterfuge? Yeah. Marv, did you get to Steve Kerr sound bite? I didn't, because normally. Marvin. Marvin. Yeah, I know, that sounds crazy, right? Did Todd tell you to get to Steve Steve Kerr's sound bite where he got a little snappy with a reporter. You know, it's crazy because as a matter of fact, he didn't. Okay, he's just expecting me to know it. Exactly. That's pretty much the way this room works. We don't tell anybody what to do. We just expect you to know. So this should do it. There's sabotage going on right now. The stakes are high, and I understand. Marvin with the back. See that backfires though. Todd gave us that bit of gold, that's what probably his best contribution of the year. His slurry mouth. Wow. It's all coming out now. It's gonna make him MVD. That little picture video. Or sound, I mean. The gloves are off now. A little gloves are off. No, there's a mittens. The mittens are off right now. All right. How about we go to neutral corners here? We take a break. Let's get it on. Oh, that's another thing. Here we go. Okay. Mills, mills lane, famous boxing referee, died at 85 yesterday. And he would always do the big boxing matches and he was there when Mike Tyson fought van der Holyfield and Mike bit his ear. And Fred she wore a T-shirt yesterday. The Holyfield bow shirt I was already for you to set me up to talk mills lane and the biting of a earlobes and stuff. But you didn't, you didn't set me up to be able to set you up. You didn't say. I did it. I was helping my shirt. Like, why would randomly I'm wearing this boxing shirt that they have to legendary referee pen. Okay. Would you like to do your mills lane in personation? Wait, what? I'm gonna throw the flag here. 'cause yesterday, remember he started the mills lane off camera. I said, save it for the show. It's great. It's really good. And then he missed it. And at the end of the show, yesterday, I said Fritz, you didn't do your mills lane. He goes, oh, I forgot. I go, well next time he passes away at age 85.

"Countdown at 6. But with 52 seconds to go, this is the ball game. It's fourth and 7 for Derek Carr. Off his back foot. Lives for the end zone for Adams. Knocked away no flag. You know, I'm sorry. Mistakes as usual. Gotta have everybody on the same wavelength. I wish everybody in that room felt the same way about this place. And as a leader, that pisses me off. Sunday's supposed to be fun, and that's the least fun day of the week right now. Well, that was the latest in a series of close losses for the Raiders this season. The Raiders have played 6 games that were decided by one score this year. They've lost all of them and Las Vegas is the only team that is winless in that scenario. This is a significant decline from last season when the raiders were 7 and two in one score games tied for the second best record in the NFL. So despite those struggles, head coach Josh McDaniels still has full support from raiders owner Mark Davis, who told ESPN quote, people in today's world want instant gratification. The guys coach 9 games were two and 7, not the results we're looking for, but at the same time, we've lost 6 one score games with the ball and a chance to win at the end. Yes, the music sets the tone. He went on to say, Rome wasn't built in a day. All right, a lot to unpack here. Marcus, where does the blame lie in your mind? This is not a funny conversation, but your face. First of all, okay, I get it. It means a lot to guys. And I'm supposed to be going to complete the different way. Man, Derek, go back to the locker room, bro like, what people lose in this league and we all have been through it. Dan didn't win a game, his whole career. It did a fail. Sorry, Dan. But on a serious note though. Last year, you guys know, I called Derek Carr Johnny Cash and I talked about his leadership. Yeah. And talked about the thing. I like the guy. I really do. But that right there, everybody go through stuff with that. Everybody's in the emotion. I get it. I get that you upset. I get that you're angry. But this league is about doing something about it, all right? That's really what it boils down to. How many times have we heard, what have you done for me lately? That's the NFL. We've seen guys have success fall off the next year and be forgotten about. So what's gone wrong? So I looked at the last four plays of this game, okay? And I point a lot of this to Josh McDaniels. I look at the last four plays of this game. Now y'all tell me. This is a screen that Josh Jay. It ran it on secondary. This is a run to Josh Jacobs. This is a pass across the middle of the foster Moreau. And then the last player of the game when you need to score you throw the devonta Adams. What are you paying him a $100 million for? Why would you go get him of all people with the game on the line and you throw one pass to him in the last four plays of regulation? Are you kidding me? So Gilmore stands over devonta Adams after the game over and we all got respect for Stephanie Gilmore. I want to see him do it four times. Or at least two. Right? So we have these conversations about the rapist. We talk about that talent. We know what the injuries are. That's not telling me you trying to win. Don't say this. At some point, we also have to point the finger at Josh McDaniels. I understand it was Derek Carr's postgame interview and that kind of has sparked this conversation, but we're talking about a team who loses a coach to one of the biggest scandals in NFL history. We're talking about a team who had to deal with the Henry ruggs situation, which was an extreme tragedy. And that team makes the playoffs with a special teams coach that has never led a team. We watched Josh McDaniels fell in Denver. We watched Josh McDaniels take a job, leave a job, get his old job back. People don't normally fail up, but Josh McDaniels has seemed to. This is a team that had a locker room that was together enough under coach Versace. And I'm gonna say this about Mark Davis, who was sticking by his coach. Clearly, outcome, success doesn't matter to you, but I'm gonna tell you like this, do not stick by Josh McDaniels, and as he continues to mess it up, the way you have stuck by your barber, when you think about this team, think about where they were last year when it starts when it ended and where you are now in one score games this season. That's about coaching, that's about preparation. That is about execution. This team seemed to be able to do it last year. Why can't they know? The barber comment let's get some good jokes in there. So when I watched the press conference, I went and rewatched the game again this morning because I expected to see a lack of effort the way that Derek is like intimating that guys aren't maybe playing as hard as they can or giving everything. That's not what shows up on tape. I don't think there is an effort issue. There's a productivity issue. The reality is this, their defense isn't good. They're offensive line can't protect. They don't move Davante around enough. Derek's not playing on time that well. So there's a lot of on the field issues. But there has to be some type of disconnect between the head coach and the players right now. There's healthy scratches. There's guys like Darren Waller that are on IR basically the whole season. Hunter Renfro is sitting around. These guys were at healthy at some point and now they're not sure. It's about how you approach these people. We watch coach Versace approach these people who treat these people and treat these players in a way that made them want to go out and play. We know they do it. I got to get this from you. Even they're called look unsure of itself. For sure. How does that happen? He was late throwing comebacks this week. I did. And how does that happen? I had to say extremely difficult to learn this, this scheme. Because of the wording. I did hear that. We got to go. Interesting. We will continue to keep an eye on this and we'll tell you what we think. We want tiny. One more thing before we go. And for that, we check in on swagger's belt. Hold on. Let's do it. What are you doing? Here's the bell. Yo, America. So y'all know, he said, first of all, your belt is like, look like one of the power lines. That's why bro I was tight in the middle, bro your belt was like. I was typing the build, America, and it popped off. Yo, we have all on there. He has been intervening. And he tries to represent a problem and pop.

"You know, it's funny what job might be available as a saints job. And you know what? It sounds really stupid now, but if you're Sean Payton, you're a conquering hero there. They would I don't want to go back into that. No, you have no quarterback. You have a wide receiver and Michael Thomas, who's now blaming the team again for how they handled his injury, Alvin Kamara, legal issues with what happened in Las Vegas. I can make it worse. The saints traded their number one traffic next year to Philly. And that pick is now the fourth pick of the draft. That means a Philadelphia Eagles. We're having a good year, also at the fourth pick. Yeah. You don't want to go back there. Denver? Is Denver going to hold on to Nathan Hackett junior the third? I don't think they will. Detroit is Dan Campbell going to hold on. Cliff Kingsbury, if they don't make the playoffs. I think they'll be openings. I think Sean is always, well, I know he's always coveted. The cowboys. The question is, how far do they have to go for Mike McCarthy to keep his job? I think that would be what I would keep an eye on. Yeah. Alan Atlanta. Hi el, what's on your mind today? The cha cha slide band. Good morning. The cha cha slide is the name of the song. You couldn't think of. The firestorm that that show appearance on the show that I made started in my family group chat. Oh my gosh. Okay, hold on. We're arguing. Now, hold on. We didn't know Marvin questioned if you were black and you said you were, and then we ask you a couple of questions that Marvin thinks that if you're black, you would know what they were. And Marv and said the barbecue song, is that what we were talking about, marm? Yeah, like the cookout. First off, not all black people are a monolith, but culturally chances are you would know. Okay. A song that we played at a cookout. Okay. So at a cookout and Al claims to be black, but claims to me. He claims according to a source of knowledge. Yes. Hey, we're journalists here. "Oh, there was a lot of money bet on the eagles to just win. The money line. One guy put up $300,000 on the eagles to just win, and he would have gotten $60,000. Nobody gave him a chance. You always got to give him a chance. It's the NFL. See, what happens sometimes is we look at a team. We look at the franchise or the owner and we go, what a terrible team. No, they're not a terrible team. They got a terrible owner. There's a big difference in that. And you saw that last night. Ron Rivera somehow has kept this team together through all of this and done an unbelievable job. We often fixate on a team's record in the NFL. And if we learned anything from last night, you never really know. And certainly this year, coming into last night's game Philadelphia, the only undefeated team in the league. But that doesn't matter. It's not what you've done. It's the game in front of you. Because how many times do we go, wait, the chiefs lost to the colts? Yes, it happened. Go back to the colts. The colts needed to win last year. All they have to do is beat a Jacksonville team that had two wins. They make the playoffs. They got blown out 26 to 11. So every week it feels like, oh, that's a mismatch. I don't know what's a mismatch anymore in the NFL. Because you have to look at this and go, they have a chance. By the way, the gambling podcast, Dylan, the graphics guy. He said he was taking the commander straight up against the eagles. 5 units last night. We'll have the gambling podcast and Irving is back this week from San Juan Puerto Rico, where I think he stayed maybe longer than he was supposed to, but he'll be back with bad Larry. "So don't expect Evan Lloyd to be available at 21. JC Jackson's market still unclear at this point, whether the Patriots are going to franchise tag the star cornerback or not, but Mike giardi of NFL network reporting that he is going to have robust interest in the free agent market at the Patriots do let him get to unrestricted free agency. He will probably break the bank and free agency and it's going to have a difficult time for the Patriots to retain Jackson if he is not tagged before the deadline on March 8th. And last but not least, Andy Isabella, the former UMass wide receiver, drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, has requested a trade and has been granted permission by the Cardinals to shop his services to other teams. Isabella's agent confirming to steal an S media that Isabella does want out of Arizona and he's gonna begin talking to other teams at the beginning of the league year and march and as the draft approaches about trading for the former UMass star, he would Andy Isabella that is be entertained by an offer from the Patriots. He would like to come to New England as a possibility, although he is not your typical slot receiver that the Patriots have gone after in the past. He's not less Welker. He's not really Julian Edelman. He's more of a vertical receiver than that. Maybe like Tampa Bay Scotty Miller for patriots fans that have watched a lot of bucks games over the last couple of years. That is one player I would compare Isabella to at the NFL level. He's had a really difficult time cracking the lineup in Arizona only one catch for 13 yards last year for the Cardinals. So that is your wrap up from the combine on Wednesday here on steel and as media dot com and on patriots press pass. Keep it right here. As we get into the workout portion of the week.

"What the NFL scouting combine in full swing on Wednesday, a lot of news and notes and regards to the Patriots and we start with meetings. Yes, combine meetings, probably the biggest part for teams now in Indianapolis other than the medical evaluations that their team physicians do in India every single year is meetings, getting face to face with their personnel execs and the top draft picks in the NFL Draft in 2022 and the Pats are doing their homework on this wide receiver class. We've already reported on the fact that the Patriots met with three of the top wide receivers so far in indie and Ohio State's Chris olave, Alabama's Jameson Williams and Arkansas wide receiver treylon Burks on top of those three. We can also add to the list more top prospects out of the wide receivers meeting with New England and Alabama's John metchie who played with Mac Jones at Alabama and had a great rapport with Mac during that national championship season in 2020 and Kentucky do it all gadget wide receiver Juan Dale Robinson also confirmed a meeting with the New England Patriots brass in Indianapolis. So you have pretty much every top wide receiver prospect in the draft telling reporters in indie that they have met with New England at some point in the process. This goes on the heels of a lot of rumors connecting the Patriots to trade targets as well, such as Calvin Ridley, the Atlanta Falcons, and at this point, although this could just be smokescreen for the Patriots and we should mention that these meetings come with a grain of salt. This is a fact finding mission in Indianapolis. The Patriots are doing their due diligence by talking to all these wide receiver prospects and just because they had a meeting with them at the combine. Doesn't necessarily indicate that they are interested in drafting that player in April. But still, the Pats are kicking the tires on every available wide receiver. And at this point, it would be shocking if a legitimate wide receiver impact type of player at that position was not brought in by Bill Belichick this off season. We also heard from former patriots offensive coordinator and current raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, he was asked a lot of patriots questions at the podium today in the convention center in Indianapolis..

"Remember Matt Patricia came back and it was kind of like, you know, a little bit quiet. Maybe that situation was quieter just because of how Matt Patricia came back after getting canned by the Lions and kind of walked back with his tail between his legs. So maybe that was why they didn't want to publicize that one as big as a new OC hire, but I think that they're going to take their time with this. I'm sure they already have a short list drafted up knowing that McDaniels was interviewing in the first place and was interested in the first place. So I don't think this took them by surprise. But maybe by I don't know, maybe by the combine, we know who they're OC is. I don't think it's going to happen super quick. Do you think it's going to be like instant or I think so I think the longer it takes the higher chance it is as O'Brien. Because I don't think anybody else is calling Bill O'Brien, you know, if it's a guy like shadow shae, if they're gonna go, you know, like a Joe Brady rat, right? I think there's maybe a rush to get that guy because there might be other calls for his services. I think with Bill O'Brien, he's either coming to the Patriots or he's staying in Alabama. So they can take their time with that one. So the longer we go in my mind, the greater the chance it's Bill O'Brien. Agreed. All right. "And you have to respect the guy and what he did here for the Patriots. And now we can look forward and start to move on here. And look for maybe some new flavor and some new spice. But I think we're both in unison that Bill O'Brien just makes all the sense in the world and it's kind of that doesn't need to be overly complicated with where they go at this higher. Yeah. Yeah, I would agree with that. It's like the Mac Jones draft pick. Is it the most mind-blowing thing? No, it's called occam's razor. Sometimes the most obvious answer is the correct most of the time. The most obvious answers to correct answer. Yeah, the last thing I'll say about this, what I think is interesting is not that no Belichick is not slowing down anytime soon. And I think a big part of the reason why Josh McDaniels is leaving is because it doesn't sound like Belichick's retirement is any sort of intermittent. All right, so this could be 5 years. It could be ten years. I don't think that anybody truly knows when Belichick is going to hang it up. But now that Belichick is alone, essentially, without McDaniels, without Brian Flores, mat Patricia is back in the building, but I don't think anybody actually wants Matt Patricia to be the next head coach of the Patriots. I guess you could have a conversation about jarad Mayo. But that is an interesting angle that the presumptive head coach and waiting if Bill Belichick decided woke up this time next year on a Sunday morning and said, you know what? I'm done. I don't want to do this anymore. Josh McDaniels was more than likely the guy that was going to get that nod. Now he is going to the Raiders. So there is a little bit uncertainty there of a succession plan if Bill Belichick ends up having a shorter lease than we all expect in terms of his life expectancy as the head coach. Yeah. Yeah, sorry, yeah. I don't know if we're trying to get off before the game starts. Oh no, no, no. You can give it to me. Go ahead. Yeah, no, I think it is like you said I think it is an indication that Bill is going to stick around and I think you look at Mayo. You look at all these guys on the staff and who is the next, you know, they're for the first time in a while who is the next guy we don't know. We don't know. And you know maybe that's a draw for somebody like Flores to come back. We've talked about when he come back if he's not officially the D.C..

"That side and look, maybe McDaniels takes somebody from the defensive side of the ball. I just. It should be Kevin fuck. Absolutely should be Kevin Fox. I know it's maybe not fair to sincerity, but he's the better option. Okay, last thing here, how would you view the end or how would you view the Josh McDaniels ten year in New England? Because we don't really know for you. We've talked about this a lot. We've gone back and forth on it. I'm probably swayed a little bit more back and forth on it than you. I feel like you've always been a Josh McDaniels truther and the fact that maybe he's not all that he's cracked up to be in terms of the hype around Josh McDaniels. I've always been a pro McDaniels guy. I've came back over to the other side, the dark side of it a little bit more this season. But what is your legacy for Josh McDaniels? Will you remember him as well, I think he always been here for pretty much every Super Bowl, but as the officer coordinator, he was the offensive coordinator for three Super Bowl championships, a 5 appearances or four appearances. Well, you remember him as that guy or you remember him as somebody that without Brady was in exactly the sauce, right? It wasn't exactly the cure all here. I don't think people realize how woven into the fabric of the Patriots Josh McDaniels is. Yeah. There's not that many people who have rings from all 6 super bowls. And he's one of them. He's been here since 2001. Obviously, there's that little break in the middle, but he was a big part of it. Like him or not, he was a big part of it. And I think that's ultimately his legacy here is that he was as much, you know, I don't want to say it now. Ernie Adams was bill's right hand man..

"That could get very interesting. Yeah. That's an interesting point. I don't know how much you really set your board yet. I think you do a lot of fall scouting and you have an initial idea of guys that you're going to look at. The senior bowl is next week. That's obviously a big, big thing for the Patriots with the draft process. So I don't think the final board doesn't usually get set until after free agency because you also don't know what free agent moves you're going to make and where you're going to fill holes in that respect either. So ultimately, I'm not too concerned with that because I do think that they are still ways away from finalizing that board. But yeah, they'll definitely be going for similar players in Vegas as the Patriots, right? They're going to try to build a similar scheme. Do you think that Josh McDaniels will take anybody with him from the Patriots current staff? Because I think this is another angle that we should touch on here that potential of draw Mayo. Maybe being the defensive coordinator there or your power just go out? No, the sun is coming in extremely bright and I will get up in a second to close the blind. Draw Mayo defensive coordinator, Nick Caylee is a John Carroll university guy. These two were John Carroll university guys and ziegler and McDaniels. They could pull from that coaching ranks as well to give a nickel some more responsibility in Vegas. What do you think about who they might take with them as I go and shut this blind? Well, we know about the relationship, Belgian statement of talked about this. They talked about it in the HBO documentary that you don't take guys for lateral moves. You know, you don't basically you don't blow up the ship as you're getting off. So I think, you know, I look at Kaley, basically the guy's Kaylee Lombardi, who reviewed his.

"So he could bring in, I'm not going to sit here and say that he was going to bring in the forty-niners run scheme where they have debo Samuel and all these guys running the football from different angles and different directions. But certainly maybe some bootleg, maybe some harder play action from wide zone system in terms of blocking. Maybe some more familiarity with motion and things like that like the forty-niners do. So if you want to go that direction in terms of wide zone system versus spread, if you want to go towards the wide zone scheme, then shadow shade is your guy. He's somebody that's had experience in that as well. And that's something that I think would be interesting. I don't know exactly if it fits Mac Jones that well. You know, typically when you talk about those wide zone quarterbacks, you think about guys that can get out on the move and make throws from bootleg actions. And I'm not sure if that's exactly what they want to be doing, right? But I think that that's still an option to I also would, I know that you don't want to hear this name, but I wouldn't rule out Joe judge. I know that a lot has happened since that happened in 2000. None of it good. None of it good. Daniel Jones stunk under Joe judge for the most part, but he was apparently The O.C. in waiting. If Josh McDaniels had taken the colts job a couple years ago, then it would have been Joe judge. Last name I'll throw out there. He's been working on the giant staff under Joe judge as Jerry Solinsky. I think I'm saying that correctly, who was the assistants quarterbacks coach with the Patriots for a while until he left for Miami with Brian Flores. He is a guy that has worked with young quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo is on the record praising chaplinsky, Jacoby Brissette on the record praising chaplinsky. He worked a lot with two attack of aloha obviously in Miami. So that's another name that if you're looking for a quarterback groomer than chaplinsky is somebody that has a nice track record with being able to work with younger quarterbacks. But the obviously answer is Bill O'Brien, we just wanted to give you a few names that check sticking outside the box..

"I would say more so than anything. They love to run pre snap motion. The one thing that I love about what Alabama does and this does help when you have jaylen waddle and Jameson Williams and John matthey and you have these fast receivers. But what I like about Alabama does is they throw the ball to guys in motion that are already moving. So you can hit you can get the ball into these players hands when they're already going nearly at full speed. And that is, I think, a really nice wrinkle at the Patriots haven't done a ton of where you get a guy already rolling and then you toss the ball out to him and the flat, you give him some lead blockers and watch him go with it. There's some RPO concepts that obviously I hope that he would bring that Mac Jones farewell and then there was also some things with bunch formation stack alignments that I really like. They gave Georgia in particular, especially in the SEC title game. All sorts of fits with bunch three receiver bunch formations and attacking rules add a bunch sets. I think those are things that the Patriots would like to do as well, moving forward, and we've seen Josh McDaniels in the Patriots do at times here. So I think there are elements of Bill O'Brien's scheme, which really is a hybrid of the Patriots offense and is spread offense, right? And he's combined both of those concepts into one. And I think that was a big reason why he was successful in the beginning with deshaun Watson and why he was able to coordinate last year pretty well at Alabama almost to a national championship. So I like a lot of those things. I do think that O'Brien element of it though that you do have to consider is a little bit what we talked about with Mac last year is it's pretty easy to coordinate an offense with Jameson Williams and Bryce young and John mechie and the stable of just incredible talent that Alabama has, right? I mean, it's pretty hard to mess that up. So when you come to the league, things are a little bit more equal. I don't know how much that is going to be a factor. I like O'Brien. Well, here's the thing. If you want a guy, if you want them to draft, John met you, Jameson Williams. Right. I mean, O'Brien's probably gonna push for that, right? And then you probably have, at least with match, you probably have Mac pushing for it. So if you really want them to go the all out Alabama route and take John mechan in the second round, take Brian Robinson in the fourth round. Then you want O'Brien here then you're kind of stuck on that one. Yeah, I like O'Brien a lot. I think that it makes so much sense because he has adapted the patriot scheme. Now, a lot of the reason why he adapted this scheme because he started adapting it here in New England and from 20 2009 to 2012 before he went to Penn State..

"Everybody happy Sunday championship Sunday, but the Patriots once again breaking news, a breaking news podcast number two of the weekend what off season so much for spending the weekend watching other teams play football, the pads, making headlines, maybe not for a reason that we wanted to see, but yesterday we have Tom Brady's retirement and then retirement. The heck knows. Let's go. I've been calling it. Are you familiar with the concept of Schrodinger's cat? No, but anybody who's familiar with it. It's basically Schrodinger's retirement. I'll explain Schrodinger's cat to you off the air. Okay, got it. All right, so Josh McDaniels, you see it right there at the bottom of the screen. Josh McDaniels and Dave ziegler the Patriots de facto general manager heading to the Las Vegas Raiders forming patriots west out there in Vegas in sin city. Now Josh McDaniels gets his second chance, Alex at being a head coach. Ziegler goes up and up and up the ranks here with the Patriots and initially really put it in the work and was somebody that grinded themselves through this and got to this spot. So we have a lot of different ways that we could go with this. I would also mention as much as I trust Adam Schefter, maybe not after yesterday, and Ian rappaport in their reporting. It ain't over until it's over with Josh McDaniels, right? I mean, there is still some work to be done here and still some eyes to dot and tease to cross. And I will believe that Josh McDaniels is officially leaving to join the Raiders Alex when he's standing there or sitting there at the podium being announced as the head coach. Do you think that that is fair? Yeah, I mean, I thought I made the joke to you. I made it to somebody like, who do we trust less here, right? Or McDaniels, given what's happened with chef during the last 24 hours and a rough look for him and obviously McDaniels, we know what happened with Indianapolis, but remember how I don't want to say this week started because it was Thursday, but the mcdaniel stuff was just kind of simmering below the surface and you know, hey, he might be interested, but there's nothing official. And then Thursday before I don't think anybody was even calling him the favorite and then Thursday or sorry, Wednesday there's a report that he's not the favorite. So nobody's saying anything. Thursday, he's no longer the favorite, which apparently he wasn't one point. Or Wednesday he's no longer a favorite. Thursday, he becomes the favorite again, goes out interviews with them this weekend, and here we are. So roller coaster couple days love the coaching carousel fun time of year and yeah, now the Patriots are in it and these might not be the only departures this off season. We got to see what happens with rod Mayo. Mike Reese reporting, Ivan fears might retire..

"You got to have something else in your bag, right? You gotta have something else in your bag for that situation because you know the colts watch that play on tape all week long and said we can't get beat by this if we get into a third and fourth and one and they run this play. This is the one passing play we know that they're going to run. So I thought, in general, I'm making it's called a really good game. I think in general, he calls really good games all the time, but these head scratchers, these one or two plays, the third downplay you're talking about, the fourth down play on fourth and one. These are the things that in these closer games against these good teams can often really separate the offense, right? This is really something that you have to look at and say, this needs to get better, right? Yeah. I would just also argue you said that overall, you thought it was a good game for Josh McDaniels and minus a couple of mistakes. Yeah, I would argue those mistakes came in huge moments. And we know how this thing weights things situationally. I don't think you can say this was a good game for Josh McDaniels. Yeah, if you want to go play for play, just counting each one is call it one point. Yeah, the positives probably outweigh the negatives. But you got to wait the plays that came in the big moments. And it seemed like every big moment that happened at that game the wrong clay was called. So I'm not willing to say that, a, Josh, you know, I won't give Josh McDaniels to credit that game I gave Mac. It works differently. Mac made the plays late in the game. He sucked at the beginning of the game. I'm not going to put that away. It wasn't his best game. But he made the plays when it mattered. Josh McDaniels congratulations, second and four early in the game. You call the right play. Awesome. Where was he on the third and goal from the 7? Where was he on the fourth and one like you said. Right. It's the situation. It's the situational play calling that killed them. Yeah, agreed. And it's kind of like max game honestly. They kind of mirror each other in their respect that like you said if you put up on a scoreboard, how many good plays that Josh McDaniels call versus how many bad players did Josh mcdaniel's call? And he probably called more good than bad. But at the same time, those bad ones really, really hurt them. And big spots. And that's something that you have to really hold on to from this game. That's about the field goal a little bit there as well. I actually bought Bill Belichick's explanation too. I thought it was a good explanation. There's 9 minutes to go in the game. Right..

"One of the best thirty two quarterbacks in this league so i don't think he was in the mindset to be a backup. And i think you know the fact that he has such a big personality and his unvaccinated status i think those things combined to the bacon not an ideal backup at least in this market i get the mindset but having him makes them better right. It makes you more secure. The most important position in the sport. I guess is what i'm saying. Yeah i mean he's he's certainly knowing the system and they're certainly developed offensive schemes around his skill. But i think the the the unreliability of being unvaccinated probably outweighed that where where they do have brian. Hoyer You know as kind of an established veteran in case something happens to mac jim you mentioned earlier that probably at this point camp newton's not a starter is on the evidence of what you saw in this training camper his overall body of work. I just look down the rosters and the thirty two teams and i can't imagine him bumping anyone that's that's kind of entrenched maybe indianapolis where their quarterback situation is so unsettled. But you know. I thought maybe washington washington where they could be a reunion with with ron rivera. But i'm not sure he could bump ryan fitzpatrick out of that job so i just don't see You know a a place in the nfl where he could come in and knock off a guy who's already adopted depth chart houston bribes. Perhaps houston but v got so many other problems. I'm not sure they want. They want this an unvaccinated veteran coming in and kind taken over how cam received in in his well. I guess in the short time that he was there. How was he received my patriot. Fans you know. People people love the fact that they signed him. After you know. Tom left last year. I think you know there's the fan. Base is a little frustrated when when they don't went up here because they're so used to winning so there was a there wasn't a lot of patients for cam last year when he went seven and nine Most of the fans were were kinda hoping that that they they drafted a quarterback they lubbock jones. And we got the biggest receptions during training camp from the fans. So you know. I think that you know as much as they liked the idea of a former. Mvp coming in and playing quarterback After seventy-nine last year they kind of wanted to see jones. You've mentioned the vaccinated things several times. How how big is this in the decision making of the patriots generally in this league wide. How much is being vaccinated unvaccinated. A real factor. You won't find anyone talking about any coaches talking about it. But i think that in the back of their minds. It has to be a you know. An overriding factor. I mean if there's if there's a close competition at at a in any position especially quarterback and you know one guy vaccinated and one guy. Isn't you know. obviously. Mike come down with kobe. Whether you're vaccine tanada or be close. Contact and be subject to a protocol and missing time but unvaccinated players are much more susceptible. And i think if you've got two guys that are close teams are going to go with the vaccinated. What's impressed you the most about johnson. You know a quick thinker in a quick delivery. Which is you know. I know some people have have drawn. The brady comparisons. I'm not ready to go there yet. But it does look more. Like josh mcdaniels traditional offense at the last two decades when maxim there You know i think back to the the The the opening drive of the second half earth preseason game when immediately went into two minute offense. He operated that so smoothly he did not look like a rookie that he makes reads quicks. He can read off defenders. Any delivers really really accurate passes which was always his calling cottage alabama. So i think quick think quick strike and accuracy stood out almost from the get-go and camp started. Do you think fans or or media members criticize ballot check. I'm kind of stuck on this because it is bills job to do. What's in the best interest of the patriots you. They'll criticize him for just releasing him. Not getting anything back for him and not giving themselves with a rookie. Starting quarterback a backup who has won. Mvp played in a super bowl. Yeah i think so. Patriots fans are pretty fickle. So there's there's never there's never a kind of a majority of what people think it's the right thing to do. But i think you know they'll the bill is built a lot of goodwill you know obviously super bowl championships. They're going to see how this plays out. I now have comes out. Doesn't perform in the first month or so of the season. Then yeah he's going to get criticized but I think right now that the fan base is berry excited about mac being the new guy and You know. I think that if you took the pulse the patriots nation baltimore degree with this. Move the number. One reason. Mack jones is starting is because he's just he just gets rid of the ball quicker than candidates. Okay and he reminds check. Brady i mean. Come on at deny that jim great work. He goes to the nfl and he gets the best coach in the nfl's history and if they gave out award josh mcdaniels would be on a shortlist to be the best coordinator at both bama and in new england excellent running game tremendous offensive line in protection. Is Mac Jones a Good Fit For the Patriots?

"But at some point in time whenever Mac Jones is ready, he is going to be able to operate the full facilities of the Patriots offense, which Cam Newton was never able to do last year, I don't care what was around him. Mac Jones is one of the most advanced. I didn't get a chance to ask Bill. This question in the press conference. I wanted to But Mac Jones is probably the most advanced college quarterback in terms of pre-snap checks reads, all this stuff. All the mental song that goes on at the line of scrimmage I have not seen or heard of a quarterback as advanced at Mac Jones in terms of what his level of experience is. And I think that it's just citing to me. It's probably exciting to Josh McDaniels. It's probably exciting to the Patriots that eventually at some point in time. Mac Jones is going to be able to do a lot of the stuff at the line Shack on. Brady could do. I'm not saying everything. I'm not saying that he is Tom Brady, but just to be able to say, all right, we see this defense, we're going to check out of this, this guy is Advanced Beyond almost all college quarterbacks you. You talk to people around the Alabama program, and they talk about how smart he is. They talk about how he's been teaching the Alabama offense, to Bill, O'Brien wage, Down there, so right? Just in terms of all that, that's a great basis and it's something that the Patriots lacked, whether it was Cam Newton or Jerry students. Did them coming from the Baylor offense home and the Auburn offense, Mac Jones can do everything that the Patriots need to have done at the line of scrimmage and that is a huge key component in this offense and they got a guy who can do that.

Jimmy Garoppolo Is Reportedly ‘Plan A’ For Patriots At Quarterback

"So much has been made about the potential of a reunion between jimmy g. and bill be in new england. The forty nine. A quarterback is under contract for two more seasons but new england needs a quarterback and they may look to trade for garappolo that is according to a very interesting piece. That are mike. Reese put together over the weekend who covers the patriots for so well and he gets up with us earlier today. Mike for those who did not read. It gives us a sense of your thinking on the possibilities. Here of jimmy g. Coming back to foxborough so good morning green. I would say as a reporter covering the team there so much secrecy around the patriots quarterback plans so i was asking myself the question. What do i know for fact and for fact. What i know is that the patriots bill. Belichick he holds jimmy garoppolo in such high regard. And it's one thing for me to say it. But i could actually show it to you. I mean there was a picture after the forty niners handed the patriots their worst home loss in two decades under bill belichick. We're bill belichick. Steve on the field to talk with jimmy garoppolo and josh mcdaniels. The offensive coordinator was standing nearby for his. Turn to talk to jimmy garoppolo. So the point. Is this screening. If the patriots believe jimmy garoppolo is their plan a and the big gap to plan b. Now is the time for them to at least test. The forty niners commitment to jimmy g. and so then. That begets the obvious next question which is if they do decide to your point that that's what they wanna do. How do they get it done. Well got to give credit to michael lombardi. The longtime nfl front office man who was here with the patriots when the patriots drafted garoppolo in two thousand and fourteen on his podcast. The gm shuffle. He said how about sam darnold going from the jets to the forty niners who in turn with then trade jimmy garoppolo in a situation controlled by garoppolo. 'cause he has a no trade clause and you saw the respect. There was mutual between the patriots and garoppolo. Well you'd think jimmy might like the idea of a homecoming in that scenario greenie. That could work for everyone. The forty niners would pick up a lot of cap space in that exchange. The patriots would get their quarterback through they respect so much in the jets. Your jets would probably take a quarterback at number two which might be their preference anyway.

McDaniels' RPO Gameplan Starts To Bear Fruit

"I think what we're seeing and I wrote about this just now is just we need to embrace this offense in what it is is that it's a run Centric offense and I think what we were seeing at a Josh McDaniels in particular he deserves a lot of credit for scheming it up in the running game. We've talked a lot about the last couple of weeks defense is playing eight guys in the box with low safeties and kind of King on that run game. So what did McDaniels do this week? You realize that they needed to come up with ways to even the numbers back up. And so he used option runs to use the Wildcat formation a couple of times. He was able to get situations where the page we're seeing an eight-man box. But because of cams legs they were able to even up the numbers with him it being a focal point of the running game. So they also what I thought was really smart as they watched the tape of that Buffalo game and off Joey Bosa just absolutely dominate the game three sacks, right quarterback pressures and get three tackles-for-loss in the Run game on top of all that forced a fumble. So they made him the read defender on all those awful plays. So he's just sitting there trying to read out Cam Newton and instead of getting up the field and blowing them off the ball. He was kind of left in no man's land trying to defend the option place. So really smart kind of wrinkles nearby McDaniels to put both in Conflict throughout the entire game. And then the last one that I kind of went over in that post was the RPO package with the two running backs, which was just really awesome job. Sony Michelle and Damien Harris on the field at the same time and the Patriots are running rpos RPO bubble screens mostly where they have a trap run on the inside and then a bubble screen on the outside and I was just reading that overhang Defender to the weak side of the formation and he's able to kind of decipher. Should I hand it off or throw it out there? They haven't thrown it out there that the screen yet. I'm waiting for them to get that looked to be able to do that. But I just think it's really cool to see how McDaniels is saying. Okay. This is what we are right. We're not going to be this prolific downfield passing attack, especially with the way the cams throwing the ball right now. So I need to scheme it up. I need to figure out ways to make sure that this running game can still go and that's exactly what they were able to do.

Should the Patriots replace Cam Newton with Jarrett Stidham?

"Think this is where we need to start because it's where everybody is starting when we talk about the Patriots and where we're at with Cam Newton right now in terms of the Patriots quarterback of the here-and-now home and also maybe even looking Beyond here and now to the 2021 season even and here in New England you turn on Boston sports radio, and I'm not trying to pick on those guys, but there are definitely talking a lot about Jarrett Stidham and the possibility of benching Cam Newton for Jarrett Stidham. I think they're crazy. But that that's a topic for another day. Mostly I want to focus on what are your opinions right knee about how cam is playing and how he can obviously improve from objectively. What was a very bad game on Sunday against the Cardinals whether you're a chemist and or a cam hater. Yeah, and it wasn't dead. A game against Arizona and Arizona. First of all, I think you have to remember that Arizona's defense is a lot different than Houston's defense. It's a lot different than Seattle's defense back in week to that Houston game. That's you know game those were two games with Jim actually got the passing game going and you felt hey maybe they could put together a passing game that could actually be effective Arizona see on their athletic. They fly all over the place Isaiah Simmons budda Baker. Like they have guys that can play they have some different things and they certainly they were putting an egg nine guys in the box of times. I'm sure having you saw that as well. I know you have from some of the work you've done they were basically dare in New England like go ahead. S game by throwing the football and it looked like they couldn't, you know, they got a couple breaks at the end with a missed field-goal and Isaiah Simmons penalty then put them in position to win, but they didn't win that game because of the passing game, but you know, that often said, I think we all have to sort of take a step back and realize a couple of things one. You mentioned I studied quarterbacks. Each week at USA Today. I have to do what we call a QB camp where I put up five of my quarterback videos of the most notable quarterback performances. There are some weeks friends. It's hard to find five good quarterback package, which is league-wide It's just tough. This is one of those weeks like you might get Baker Mayfield than that because there's just not great quarterback players Patriots fans were spoiled from two decades of Tom Brady where we took the best at the quarterback position weekend and week out but then when you take a step back and you don't have that and you see guys like, you know, Derek Carr and his high variance play or Baker Mayfield in his high variance player. Look at Carson waves, I mean talk about somebody that's regressed. He's regressed all the way back to his senior year at North Dakota State quarterback plays tough. And right now we have a quarterback. That's high variance. Well, that's one thing. I think we need to remember the other is this he came in late in a strange year in the midst of a pandemic with no training camp more minimal training camp. No minicamps. No OTAs, no prestige. James be tough complicated offense to run that has so many different moving parts. You've read The Playbook, you know, Evan every road has like six different variations. I'm trying to do is hard. There are some play books that are easy. It's like oh, yes, this makes sense Bruce Arians Playbook. It's kind of easy. Nothing really changes Josh McDaniels doing the Patriots Playbook. It's like quantum physics for me. Like I I can't figure it out. And so to try to do that in the midst of all this is difficult. So with that context, I think you know, if you want to get into the home Jared versus cam debate. I don't really think there is one because as you pointed out this week on Twitter Bill Belichick has seen Jarrett Stidham now for almost two years. He's seen him every day in practice if Jake was going to be the answer to what fixed to what else is Patriots passing game. Yes, he would play him but he's not so that tells you what you need to know about Jackson them. I was on Jarrett Stidham home. Right before they signed Camp. I remember I wrote the peace and said look Jack said it was a planet quarterback everybody and I'm so glad I snuck in at the ad. Well, look if they could get can do it for cheap short not be great. But Jarod said it was a planet like two weeks later. I signed Cam Newton Cam right now gives them the best chance to win games. Is it through the passing game most weeks? Probably not, you know this week might be a get right opportunity. But if I you know, if for the 2021 season, I still think canvas done enough to earn the chance to win this job with a full complement of training camp preseason, all that stuff of the engine needs to get better at Short of the mechanics break. Absolutely not do they matter. Sometimes they actually do but right now he's the best shot they've got week in and week out to win games.

Boston - Cam Newton Says Fit With Patriots Is ‘A Match Made In Heaven’

"Quick Art quarterback Cam Newton called his fit with the New England patriots a match made in heaven saying that on the Greg Hill show on w. e. in Boston this morning you tend to agree, I. Do I think being able to rebrand self with a ill football savant like bill belichick like Josh mcdaniels will put him. Situations where their team won't beat themselves and allow them to do what he does well, and not put them in situations when he doesn't really well, you know anytime, you can do that with your Kobe perset and be able to show the flexibility. I believe that the Patriots been waiting for an opportunity to ask new wrinkles to that offense of system that has the added ability to grow under. Tom Brady for like twenty seventeen years. I. Don't Know How long you've been at least twenty years seemed like it's been forever man but it's between love and hate he love you today while you cheat. Cam Gets Signed

"Well there was big news coming last night. Courtesy of our Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen former MVP cam. Newton is a free agent. No more instead Newton is heading to new. England to join forces with bill, Belichick and follow in the footsteps of another MVP Tom Brady. And Cam Newton's cryptic fashion. He had this to say the instagram. I'm excited because I know what right now all praise to God dropping contact tomorrow. I hope you're ready Hashtag. Let's go pat. And so now we know, and we'll start with Adam Schefter, and our health hall of Famer. Steve Young One one. Just tell us how we got here. How did this deal get done? Listen I think it took Cam Newton a little bit of time to recognize that there was not a thirty plus million dollar a year job on the market when you released two weeks into the free agent signing period not only that there's not an obvious starting job that's out there, and so the longer this went on, and the less he heard from teams, and there really was nobody that he heard from the more he recognized that he had to find the right spot. And if you're going to find the right spot, there's nothing wrong with taking new. England Riga tour with Bill Belichick and Josh mcdaniels, and the new quarterbacks coach Jed fish in an offense. That obviously is going. Going to be trying to replace Tom Brady where you're competing with the guy like Jarret, Stidham hasn't proven that he can play yet in the NFL and so cam. Newton goes to New England on a one year deal where he gets to reestablishes value show that he's healthy, and over the shoulder and foot injuries that he has been dealing with the last two years, and this is the the place that he now tries to relaunch his NFL career at the age of thirty one, which should be most quarterbacks, the prime of their career, no question and Adam. How likely is it that this is in effect? A one year auditioned for Cam to be with the Patriots beyond this season. Wendy what I would say is this if Cam Newton plays well, the Patriots obviously would be interested in resigning him, and if not, they have the ability to move on from him. It depends on how the year goes. It's difficult to forecast that right now. All we know is that the Patriots signed a former. Most Valuable Player who won that award in two thousand fifteen, who has tremendous ability who goes into this offense, and now we'll have to learn it, which is not going to be an easy task in a shortened off season for put as the ability to be dominant quarterback. If he can pick up that system if he plays that way, you would think that no one would not let him out. Out, the door, but again there's a whole year. They WANNA see Newton. They WANNA see them. They want to see a year goes to. It's truly to say that just yet well. Yeah, I mean a lot can happen in a year. We've all we've all seen that in Steve. How do you like the fit between cam? Newton and what he brings on the field and the New England patriots. When healthy. Rusted Cam Newton mean it's like. Manna from heaven right I mean in many ways I, think Josh, mcdaniel and Bill Belichick sitting around a lot of times. Saying. Could you imagine what we could do with this guy or that? Guys? They play these players. Run the League, and they see them in places where I'm sure they say because they're supreme of conference. Not Hubris just supreme confidence that if we could get a hold of him what we could do with him, and we can really expend on what you're seeing around the league. What we can do is special, and so I'm sure they're saying this about. If Cam comes in his foot is okay. Because we know the arm is all right, we should. We saw that early last year before. So. We know that he's healthy. If his what is good and he can move, you've got. Hungry. Sophisticated and the type caliber Blair in New England, where you have bill and Josh saying you can't imagine what we're GonNa, do with this kid and so I think that's I. think that's the conversation. That's happening right now. New England, Steve. Look it's anybody's guess at this point, but you. You have an opinion very qualified one. What do you believe the likelihood? Is that Cam Newton? Is the Patriots Starting Quarterback Week One? Again if healthy, if he can move around, I can't imagine them with his talent level, and what they think they can do them again. It becomes a you know it's a proof point for what they're out to show their out to show that we can do special things with special players, and so it's it becomes A. A right of passage to be in New England, and that we can take somebody, and we can show you amazing things that can be done and they've done that with flair after play after player so Cam Newton and healthy can move around. I. It's GonNa be, too. It's like a gravitational force when it's to special to be able to show what they can do with a great Cam Newton. Yeah,

Would Tom Brady to the 49ers make any sense?

"NBC. Sports Boston's Tom. Curran told our old friend Chris Mad Dog Russo on his radio. Show that the chatter chatter connecting. Tom Brady to the forty niners as quote real now again. I heard that in India by the way before went on the air and said it. I had heard that Which I dismissed it as A. That's ridiculous and then I would assume the heard it as well and because he's a master at disseminating information played it. As you know I got an idea. This is crazy but out here you know but that that was as early as Friday Thursday. That was kicking around here. Jimmy Garoppolo the details of it are pretty fascinating the time that current said it was from both sides. Oh of course. Tom Brady wants to play for the forty niners. He's looking around the league possible teams to play for that. I can't come up with a better pick. Not just because he is his favourite teammate. And I mean that's the starting point. The next would be how how good they are and how Santa me everything's raincoat. And the fact that the forty niners have some mutual interest. According to this report is what and put yourself Garoppolo shoes. You have a really. You got traded from Tom. Brady's team across the country. You have this great ending to the season with the niners. Then you play your Tom Brady in two thousand nineteen you blow out your knee. Very frustrating comeback. You improve as a player. Maybe you're not all the way there where you're superstar. Maybe you'll never be that guy but you have a better season than Tom Brady. Your team goes to the Super Bowl and has a double digit lead in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. And now you're hearing that the guy that you had go three thousand miles across the country to get out from under Mike. Come back to you. That's a tough situation stinks. But I would say that you look back when the trade happened. There were whispers that the forty niners had inquired about Tom. Brady not even whispered. I mean that was out there. And secondly if you're Tom Brady and you you're gonNA leave Josh mcdaniels in this embedded patriots environment for team x and you have no idea what really is happening to the one team. I could trust if I'm Tom Brady going teaming with Kyle Shanahan and seen how that two year process will play out the first one where I thought this is the first brady remember. It makes sense on his side. I don't know how it makes sense for the forty niners but it does make sense for Tom. Brady well there. There is thought that Jimmy G. Kyle Shanahan you know aren't a perfect match where he's not doing what? Kyle wants reading answers on every play and that maybe Jimmy G. doesn't always have the answers wash the fourth super bowl. Look if you're trying to compare the ability to win before the snap or the mental ability of quarterback comparing someone at Tom Brady. You're not going to end up looking great but I think that's some one where Kyle Shanahan would look. That's the advantage that Tom Brady would give to them that he would. He would know all the answers and and as crazy as it is. I mean I'm not putting this as like it's the answer but pf for instance. Had Tom Brady as a much higher rated quarterback last year and. I don't think that's crazy. I think Tom Brady led similar or better level. Brady's entire two thousand nine hundred thousand season under the microscope that Jimmy. Jeez fourth quarter was has been under. And you're going to see a guy who failed over and over again with the New England. Patriots feels tremendously shortsighted. If the niners went this route I mean Brady is going to be what forty three and August. He's showing signs of slippage. Garoppolo is a guy that still in his twenties. What is take? That doesn't make sense right. What what do you do in two thousand? Twenty three cents. I think if you have to think long you don't because if you're Kyle Shanahan you're up twenty eight to three in the Super Bowl you'll lose. And now what are the Falcons? They've never been back. They're not the same your window. That's the thing that's you know. I experienced it from two years ago with the chargers. At twelve and four beating the ravens going New England. It's tied at seven. You feel like okay this is great than Brady gets the best of you. You come back following year and people are picking win the Super Bowl to win the division. You've already be Patrick mahomes once maybe you figured it out with Derwyn Jones and it falls apart. You can't like there is no law window in the NFL FAST. But the so just go get it. Go Win the one championship and worry about one mile scenario to also just indicate that they don't that Jimmy Garoppolo is someone that they're invalid about long-term because I think there is a. There are a number of quarterbacks are there are situations where of course they would not want to jump off a guy in his twenties but if they considered a move. Like saying this one specific. Don't feel great about Jimmy D but I'll tell ya I'll tell you who is excited about this. I mean If there is a perfect situation or to get patriots this is it. I mean this is this is this is. This is what I as a selfish fan would have wanted. I I've said on this podcast. I don't WanNa see. Tom Brady played poorly in any uniform. But I'd rather have played poorly in another uniform and the Patriots and this this story here at least I would think we talk about Patriots fans all the time. It's all you ever bring up. I wish I could jump off of it but this would bring me back in. I mean I think it comes down to this. This cow Shanahan Jimmy. Garoppolo holds them back right now and if he does then sense to look into it. I guess if you're interested US coachspeak but they absolutely believe it is is a better than guy be do. I think my team has a better chance on a super bowl with Tom. Brady or Jimmy Garoppolo next year. Because if I believe. It's Tom Brady. Guess WHO's coming to play quarterback Tom Brady. This is too good having that some pink upright there Jimmy G. wants back with the Patriots as starter. I'm I mean you can't just sell that down the river as an organic happening that feels to me like a prepackaged preplanned plot hatched years

Brady: Spinning the QB Carousel

"Brady. And I'll start with this one I just. I would be stunned if he ends up anywhere else. So I'm going to say the CAROUSEL stops and he sticks rate where he is even if he also moved his house and headed out of state. He's not long for New England either way but for another year especially if they end up ponying up phoning up to thirty million or whatever and again the Patriots end it also gives them the opportunity like the colts to draft a quarterback and start developing someone this time though for real. It didn't work out Jimmy G. Because Brady just kept playing but this time they actually would be grooming a young kid for the future Brady stays annoying on who disagrees as who agrees Wi with you hundred percent. Think He. I think he wants to be wanted in. This process might address some of that and then have New England come out in a total pantomine show and say yes. We're going to pay you a a lot. Yes you know. The quote was weapons ad he wants stuff added around him. He doesn't want to be in last year's offense. I think all that New England is the best situation for him for him to seamlessly. Leslie not start over with a new playbook work with Josh mcdaniels and hope that you get it right. Probably the best for the Patriots. Are they really going to do better than him. I think it'd be difficult. I don't buy the talk that he's GonNa the idea that he could make a free agency and this has been on our network to and see what he's worth and then come back. I mean if you're talking about I want more weapons. And he wants the team around him to be good if he gets the the free agency and comes back they have to pay. Whatever Tom Brady is gonNA cost plus thirteen and a half million in dead cap money it makes no sense? I just can't see bill belichick operating like that. I I think the Patriots at some point. We'll have to be. We'll have to say if you reach free agency like we're moving on. They either get the deal done before free agency Z.. Starts or not because otherwise it makes no sense to bring him back plus thirteen million dollars of fake money He Lord knows knows he's earned the benefit of the doubt but I'm still floored by how much benefit the Dow. He's getting compared to other quarters. I agree and people keep mentioning the titans and if here the titans why in the world you've got Ryan Tannehill who you're probably going to keep. Who can escape pressure? Athletic and can hit passes down the field. And you're going to move on from him for the Tom Brady. Who played in two thousand nineteen? I don't see that only the only issue there is that any of the thirty one other owners would would sign up for scenarios like that many cases where Tom Brady changes everything. People think about your team for the next year from a coach angle. I do under like if the this is one where the insiders don't have a good read on it kind of like Peyton manning back in the day because it's such a big deal but if you believe that the insiders had a read on it really feels it's just chargers or patriots that there that there's not gonna be the level of interest by any other team and even that the chargers feel like it pretty big underdog in that scenario

Where will Tom Brady play in 2020?

"Asaka little Tom Brady. We did not speak about the report. Indian rappaport our guy has followed it up a few times that the Patriots are willing to pay Tom Brady thirty million dollars or more which which I think is very significant also reported by Ian. was that the chargers would show some interest in reported by. ESPN is that. Tom Brady made it to the free agent market that the raiders would be expected to show a ton of interest and all. That's fine but once I heard he and wrap Ian say the Patriots Patriots are willing to pay him thirty million dollars. I kind of was like that. That's a wrap like he's coming back to the Patriots defense. True not on purpose never made sense to me that this was for all of the prime of his career the last decade. He didn't care about money. He took pay cuts so the team could be stronger. You're all of a sudden at age. Forty three he's greedy and he only wants to be about money and you better pay me and Mike Giardi report makes a lot more sense to me that he cares much more about them. Upgrading grading the weapons around him breaking the bank on this contract. Yeah I'm with you this. I mean the idea of a money. Grab when you're within the marriage family structure that he's in money is not the first. There's the question of the night question with him as these reports and weeks have gone on is what is the level of interest in the Patriots treats especially bill belichick in in bringing Tom Brady back so the the idea that they would pay him. Thirty million would indicates me. It's high. It's it's high and and they're gonNA bring him back. I didn't I didn't know that and I feel like Ian. I thought there was like a chance they would go teddy bridgewater something like that. I really did. I think it's I think it has to do with what else is out there. And like Andy Dalton is not as. That's nice that people like to connect the DOTS and put Andy Dalton New England. And all this stuff by met no. It's flights it's flights out there people have little mentions of. Maybe Andy Dalton would be a fit for the cements exhaustion around this entire topic. It cannot be sealed up quickly enough either. figure it out just figured out figure. We're going to go. I don't WanNa hear another report about Klay. Biden wants to jump in I know he's he's Well he's not taking less money for the team narrative with with Brady well. But all taken it for I I mean I don't WanNa get too far in the conspiracy theories but I think Tom Brady is being compensated To the amount that he needs to to play for the New England Patriots I mean He. He owns a company. That is running and is operational and you can go. I do today At Patriot Patriot place. So that's not a conspiracy. That is I. Don't I don't know how that plays into your conspiracy. Do do think in terms of what Tom Brady wants Tom Brady wants to be wanted by the New England patriots. I I think he's a he's a guy that's obsessed with the way he's perceived with with bu the people that he works with and if they are willing to give him thirty million dollars in that says Tom we want you right once. We don't want Eighty Dalton. We don't want Hypothetically Cam Newton when we want you we love you Tom Bye. We will work out with your doctor. We will sell your wares feet away from the stadium. We love you. I mean al.. You are everything to fill. Its bill ballot check. He knows Robert Kraft wants wants to be new. England wants him. He knows Josh mcdaniels. It's the whole thing of does bill ballot L.. Check still want me. Does he still want him. I mean this is a guy. Bill ballot check who is ready to move forward with Jimmy Garoppolo of everything that came out of the whole Deflate Deflate Gate in that whole drama with Jimmy Jean after that the one. I think salient point to me as a patriots. Fan was ballots was very ready to just move forward with Jimmy Garoppolo and and so. That's in Tom. Brady's mine a couple of years later I would imagine that this guy might not want me. I still am not really sure but it might not be bill bell decision. It might be Robert Kraft decision. Let's move on.

New England Patriots’ nightmare Tom Brady scenario very much in play

"At a more I can ask you about New England because man this is juicy solid sounds like Brady does not want to retire that Brady would like to come back it sounds like Robert Crandall were lying desperate to have him back in New England and yet there is this kind of something hovering over this situation as Belichick want Brady back we don't know is Brady wanna be with Belichick any longer we don't know is there any chance in your mind that Robert Kraft chooses Tom Brady over bill Belichick and Belichick is moving on so but let me say this Robert Kraft can certainly mediate this if necessary the I found it no it wasn't Tom Brady senior who is right there right DSL said this is Tom seizure Newman is bill Belichick's call it's up to bill Belichick he controls what time is going to do so that's what it does if you watch list of the Bella check after the game he didn't want to say much he acknowledged that you know that calm is an icon there with pages and all the he loves them and all that stuff but he also said something very revealing which is that Hey this is a two way street and you know when they went into the contract this past year it was Tom's idea Brady the I did it he just said this project it is basically you ended this year any other cancer had three agency but not be franchise and so what what Belichick kind of said the other night briefly well that it is a two way street here no kind of like Tom had a choice but now we're in a different choice because to me bill Belichick is the architect of this team as he's done a marvelous job but if you saw what was around Tom Brady this year I don't care who's playing quarterback I mean yeah maybe Russell Wilson is somebody that can overcome some of the weaknesses that there is a bit weird the receiver is doing adamant got a hundred passes and I'm showing we're gonna find out he's really injured this year it's always amazing I don't drop the ball but you know what it was that the tide introduction obviously because rob about Kelsey fell off the only way to be if you what Tom Brady and bill Belichick both counted on was that they had Antonio brown and that was going to fix a lot of problems it was Robert Kraft the owner who decided after Antonio brown messed up by the weekend it that this was not going to be for him and so grab one Tom Brady back I believe Tom must come back I think the best place form is New England and then it's a matter Belichick's got the better players come out of any any attempt to do it we know we can do that but no don't you sure kind of that that little shot there about no it's not a known it is a two way street Tom Tom Tom wanted this to go either way this crisis which is now I go is there and they can make it a bigger crisis Belichick says dole but it was going to play quarterback for the year instead of is not ready yet you know and it's all month to play and I think this month is a probably bugs dollar check and I don't know this because they told me yes yeah you know Tom because of this family he is is all season is different he doesn't show up until later in the offseason but if you're gonna be working with new receivers yeah I David bill Belichick is probably going to want him around more frequently to get them all close up but on the same page when we are moving parts and now we don't know Josh McDaniels is going to be there and and as the office you Lycos dot a scar neck you coming back and we just saw it there the receivers coach just begin the New York Giants

"Coaching news out there. If you haven't seen it this morning Pat Shurmur it has been let go from the New York giants but the giants have also let us know that Dave gettleman will remain as the GM so we know that that's happening. We're also starting starting to hear some of the names names of people that are being requested for interviews. Adam schefter pointed out the Cleveland. Browns have requested permission to interview a Josh mcdaniels. We knew that they've also requested permission to interview Ravens. Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman for their head coaching vacancy. So that's one there. They can take care of that interview now in fact because the ravens have a bye week it gets a little. It'll trickier with Josh mcdaniels. Who appears to be a hot candidate for several different teams? He is on the list of candidates for the giants. He's on the list of the the candidates for the the Browns as well as you and for the
