"You have a former National Football League executive who knows the way it works right here. Ask him the question. Do teams know that they don't have to pay these guys that much? If he is not franchise tagged, he'll get it. Why? Because you can't get these guys. You know, the usual. I can get a guy that is as good as Daniel Jones. There's like 15 of them out there, Chris. Now be nice to the man. You're right. I understand the argument. The usual stuff. He's from the northeast. The usual suspects for quarterback free agency are nothing against these guys. Josh mccown, Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Fitzpatrick back in the day. You know who these guys are? Yeah, of course. Right? If you get someone like Daniel Jones on the market, look at Kirk Cousins years ago, they're going to get because the bidding because there's nothing out there. You can't get these players. Look at Deshawn Watson was basically a free agent. Now, I agree with you. There's no middle ground. There's The Rookie level and then there's these $40 million quarterbacks. Why isn't there a middle ground? Someone's got to do a deal with someone who's not going to be a free agent because they have leverage and say, let's do a 2020 $5 million deal. And before this season, Daniel Jones was signed for 20 to 25, over 5 years. And now he won't. Now he won't. Because he won one plan. And his answer is the giant should say there's the door. Well, they have the tag at 32. Or they do a deal, but if you're doing a deal, they're going to offer less than 32 a year. How is he going to do that? You know, Geno Smith, can you imagine Geno Smith? Might not be a happy with a 32 $1 million franchise. I'd rather have Gino Smith than Daniel Jones, these guys would it be for the year, I think you could have gotten them for 15 a year. 20 a year max. The other aspect of this conversation that Chris is asking about I'll ask it for you is, will we ever see a team, let's say the Giants are could be that team right now screw it. We are not going to pay that much money on our quarterback. We love him. We love Daniel. You know they love Daniel Jones. Okay. And there's many reasons to love them, but they're not going to pay him that much money just because the market says that's the cost. And they say, we're just going to go back and start again and draft somebody. Will we ever see a team run their franchise like that? Andrew Brent. I think people are afraid to do that because the quarterback is so important and trusting it to a young guy. Yes, you've got the examples of burrow hurts and Herbert. They don't come along much. They don't come along much. I wrote in Sports Illustrated this week. This there is a myth that if you pay a top quarterback, you can't build a Super Bowl team around them. I think that's BS. I don't subscribe to that. I think well managed teams can pay a quarterback 40 million and have a Super Bowl contending team every year. But listen, these guys are overvalued. Look at the draft. They're all put up on the draft when they shouldn't be drafted. They're drafted early. They're pushed up in free agency. This is where we are. They are everything in sports. In this sport, and yes, Deanna Jones, either going to be franchise, are going to get more than 32 a year. Same with Geno Smith, we would have never said that 6 months ago. Why can't we see more teams operate the way San Francisco did this year? Now, it was because of necessity because of injuries, but they took the last pick in the draft and were a play away and injury away from being a Super Bowl team. And if you look at what they did, they surrounded him with great talent on both sides of the operate that way if you know the last pick in the draft is going to play like Brock purdy. They didn't know he was going to play like they didn't know he was going to play like what I'm saying. They got lucky. But he used the last pick in the operate your franchise. Why not? Because you could get lucky, you're going to really operate your franchise. They did get lucky with Brock, but they spent three number one picks for the guy who's going to start above Brock next year. And imagine how good they'd be if they had those picks. They mortgage the future for Trey Lance, absolutely. But they hit on all the talent around. And if you have a good front office and you hit on your draft picks, obviously easier said than done. Why can't you just roll the dice every four to 5 years with a first round quarterback? I love it. What do you think? Go ahead. I see you got a guy right here. Can I answer your questions? I understand it. I've heard it before. I don't think a team is ever going to do that. Why? Because it's too risky? Damn straight. Because you are building your team around this player and you're going to pay what it needs to. And again, this is my feeling. Jobs are on the line too, right? I don't know. I don't think Russell Wilson won a Super Bowl. He's a third rounder. And they paid him. Now two teams have paid. Now, it's also, by the way, this is spoken like a guy who's got 6 rings from a pick one 99 in the draft. This guy is used to those are rare. Striking gold. I mean, listen, it's not thinking with that.

"And people are surprised when this happens all the time, but you look at guys like Josh mccown, right? Colt McCoy, who just hang around the league forever and they don't really play, but they're there. That's because they're just valuable resources to have in the room. Hoyer is kind of hit that level. Like you said, teams are going to be worried about what he can do physically. Yeah. It's his value in that room. He's going to be in the league another 5 or 6 years, probably. I don't know. How old is he? That might be a little much, but he's a bold years of the two year deal. His rookies. He's 36. He could play four more years. Wouldn't account play two 40, 41. Right. Exactly. Yeah. All right, so we talked about Brian when we were talking about all these other signings, but obviously the news coming down here and a little bit over an hour ago. The Patriots are without JC Jackson. JC Jackson has moved on to the Los Angeles chargers, the Pats now going back to the drawing board at cornerback essentially outside of Jalen mills and Jonathan Jones coming back from that injury. Hang on, you want a breaking one here. This is actually interesting. Okay. Demar is from Tom Paul Sara just now. DeMarcus Lawrence has become the first defensive end in NFL history to have 7 straight seasons of his contract fully guaranteed. He's got a new three.

"Hi, I'm Elizabeth dutton. And I'm Elizabeth dutton. Oh, wait, sorry. Is there any do you want to say your name? No, I'm good. Go ahead. We're the hosts of ridiculous crime. People love true crime, right? The mystery, the intrigue, the human frailty. Totally. But what a lot of us don't like is the blood and the guts and the mayhem. Wait, wait, wait, wait, some of us do like the mayhem. Okay, but let's be real. There's nothing funny about murder. Okay, that's right. Our show gives you stories like the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra junior and the max headroom signal hijacking. Oh, so you mean ridiculous stories like the UK cat shaver and Pablo Escobar's cocaine hippos. Yeah, stories like the dudes who stole buzzy the animatronic whatever he was from Disney World, and the woman whose husband tried to kill her, but came back from the dead and surprised him at her own funeral. Yeah, that does sound good. You can find this new podcast ridiculous crime all over the place. The iHeartRadio app, the Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. I don't know how you live. Ridiculous crime. So this obviously came to a bit of a head late in the late in the postseason here with the Brian Flores lawsuit, but diversity hiring is still a huge issue in the NFL, we are down to, I believe we have Mike Tomlin, Ron Rivera, Robert sala and lovey Smith. Am I forgetting anyone among non white head coaches in the NFL right now? No, you are not. So we're down to four at this point. And. You can't really have an immediate fix of it. Like you can't, you know, Roger Goodell can't pass down an edict that half the teams have to fire their coaches and make new hiring et cetera, et cetera. Obviously, there's a pipeline issue. The Rooney rule while well intended is not really making a big difference here. And again, if you're going to play devil's advocate with this, you could kind of say, well, the Rooney rule was a long-term play and well, now we're kind of in the long term. It's been around for a while. It's not really getting the results that you want and however you want to slice it up. A league that's 70% black with 28 of the 32 head coaches being white that doesn't it doesn't make sense. Yeah, I mean, what's weird about the NFL is they just seem completely content to not step ahead of any issues. You know, and I could see there was probably a time there where everyone was fat and happy and, you know, I think that there was as many as what. I think we had as many as 8 or 9 coaches of color at one point. I think maybe ten years ago, am I making that up? Does that sound about right? I think that sounds about right. Yeah. And so I think at that point, you know, if a third of the league or coaches of color like I don't think you're gonna have a ton of pushback, but I think what happened was and this is just sort of my understanding of the issue is like, you know, it's not so much as the total number. It is the resume to resume comparisons that have stacked up there. So it's like, okay, you know, Josh mccown almost got a head coaching job over and you can list black assistant X, Y, and Z and like these guys have been in the league forever, or you look at Steve Wilkes who got fired after a year with Josh Rosen as his quarterback. And so I think that there's a legitimate complaint there. There's something that the NFL has to confront head on. The Brian Flores lawsuit, I think put an interesting thing in there that they're challenging the NFL NFL teams to require teams to put their reasons for hiring and firing and writing. Because I think that's an interesting thing. I think that's worthwhile. And so we could all see it. And we can all understand it. And but they don't allow themselves to get ahead of any of this, like all this stuff could have been, you could have stepped in front of this years ago. You could have kept actively evolving the Rooney rule with the way that everything was turning. We first saw these super assistant trees getting plucked with Bill Belichick and you could look at that and say, uh oh, okay, this is going to affect the Rooney rule. Let's get ahead of this. Uh oh, this is going to affect it. Let's get ahead of this. But it's too late now. And you and I have talked about this. I mean, if you're an owner or you're a scared general manager, making a big hire, you almost have to hire from the Sean mcvay tree. What else are you going to do? And there's no incentive to be bold to take chances. There's no incentive to look any different than anyone else right now. And so it's a hard situation. It is just an incredibly reactive league in always and we could certainly do a whole show on the various ways that they failed to get ahead of things over the years. It's kind of just their MO at this point. But it's not getting fixed right now. The Brian Flores, the way that lawsuit comes along will be fascinating because the NFL is already they've also already been embarrassed by what's been put out there in that lawsuit. If other coaches start to join up with Brian Flores and we'll see what happens there. I mean, just the potential for a torrent of embarrassing information coming out about the 32 owners in this league or I should say 31 and then you have the packers. That's kind of that's the kind of thing that would move them to actually act. In a way that they just haven't done because they just kind of wait until there's a PR disaster showing up at their door and then they decide now it's time to do something. Yeah, I mean, we saw this two years ago, and then they said, and then they were like, oh, oh no and then so they did the minority coaching summit. And what have we seen from that, you know? In that time, we've only increased Josh mccown's potential of being a head coach. Three four. And there really, you know, what I really wish and it'll never happen. And I think it was this would be a good thing for Roger Goodell to do, but probably not if he wants to stay employed. It's like, look, I have nothing to do with this. At this point, your beef is with all these guys who own these teams and are refusing to listen to me. We have these meetings. I say please be more open minded. We remind them of the spirit of the Rooney rule, we tell the Mike Tomlin story that this guy wasn't even on the Steelers radar, but they sat down and they listened to him. They took a chance and he's arguably one of the three best coaches in the NFL. Nobody wants to listen to me. And so I don't know what to do. And I'm done kind of doing these half hearted efforts. These like corporate apology efforts that almost seem more insulting on the back end. You know, we're at the point now where we're offering teams like what compensatory picks to hire coaches and it's like, come on, you know? This shouldn't be that complicated. But at this point, if I were him, I'd just be like, listen, this is your problem now, you know? Like all of you guys have to answer for this. I'm not going to stand out here and be like, yeah, this is great. I'm really excited about the way this is going. Oh, hang on a second. I got a phone ringing. Is that your home phone? That is my home phone. I do have a landline. Very exciting. We should leave that in the podcast. That's Roger Goodell calling right now. Found out we talked about him. I'll jump back into this in three, two, one. Well, that's a $40 million a year to be the heat shield for these 31 dudes who don't necessarily.

"People basically talking about him like he's a bum. See your fucking curse and just go off. Would Because if I'm Andy, dominant my pants, you know? Damn attention. I'm in the National Football League. I'm the quarterback in Chicago Bears. You can kiss my You know what? But you know that's not what people mental is. Don't It is not because you can't escape it, man. You people who know especially in Charlotte, People were saying stuff to you walking down the street. Do you think about when people say something to you? Or when article pops up about Yuki people like Hey, Do you see article that came up that you can't run away from something's days. Good. You should read it. It's a good That's what I said. Using this fuel is any Dalton in the bottom half like it went to about 32 teams, right. So is he 17 to 32 as far as starting quarterbacks or is he within the top 16? Talent wise. Where would you put him? You get in the middle. I'm just trying. He's like right there. I mean, he's he's like a little middle back metal back in right right down the middle. Right, So it's not a back. He's right back talking. But it's just about Chicago. That's why, Yeah, so many movies that are at the top, and we all know the top guys are right. There's only five of them. The rest of the guys. I kind of just They're right, you know, and in his division Would you put him in seconds? Think about it. See everybody second In that division. Nobody separates they sell. Whether it's Jared Jared golf, So if if I told you were picking teams on, I said to you Right there. Marge is off the board. But he was picked number one. J already took him. You have to take the next quarterback to be your starting quarterback out of that division who you take it. I'm taking care of God. Are you okay? Yeah, I'm taking okay. Can I just go back to a point and going Because we talked about this yesterday, I was gonna make sure reiterated. Bear starting quarterback since the year 2000 when we put up that list that list Oh, my God. Nature Too Risky. Here it is. Nick Foles, ESPN to righties. Daniel Mike Glennon 18 million. My Clinton by the way. Tenor century. I mean, Jay Cutler, I'll take Jacob. Okay. Okay. Matt Barkley, Brian Hoyer. Jimmy Clausen, Josh McCown. Jason Campbell. I mean, it's You adjust? McCown and Cade McNown. Something funny about that. Jason Campbell is that that's what I'm saying. Look at the list. It's a longer list. Kordell Stewart started. That's almost a quarter I came to count. How many quarterbacks is that greasy was? No, I know Brian Greasy. Was there, obviously for 56789? Is that not any true I can't say That's a lot of cubes. Exactly. 46 18 that's like almost since 2001.3 quarterbacks per year, Barkley Look at the names on this Christian Lor here. Chris China, Jim Miller. Yeah, them didn't do it all the way before, right? Played against all them dudes like there's definitely a rap lyric there just with crabs with Josh McNeal, Josh McCown in case that that that's a literally one, dude, I mean, all those dudes. Played. They're different ages and stages of the careers, but it's only really one Dude on that list tonight. Rock wit that would be J color the rest of the day. So any dog is just supposed to be the guy right lately. He's the guy QB one right? That's what they say. Let's bring this back from yesterday only because Jay and I just want to see Keyshawn. Just detonate right? And I want people at home to feel what keep here It is to like if you could you on radio. You can't see it. But when you listen to the voice in the explanation I want you to try to picture with Keyshawn is trying to say what he says. That guy is deciding your fate, and I'll be Ryan Pacer. Gee, I'm talking about what the Bears could do it 20, even though they already have two veteran quarterbacks. If we did you have to quarterback I do think it's it's a good room. For sure. I mean, those guys are both have a lot of experience. A lot of different experiences to which I think is good. I think the coaching staff that we have there that position is strong as well. We talked about it earlier with Matt and with laser would slip. It's a It's a strong coaching staff around that position and Get a lot of veteran leadership in that room, too. So it answer the question. Do you think it's that would be a good room for a young player to enter? But again? We're just gonna take the best players throughout this grab c. I can't do it. No, I can't do it. Let it out. I just I can't do it just because you want the letter Rain. It's true. You can't let her rip. No, I'm just saying they Employed him. To be in charge of what they're going to do in the draft. That really bothers you. Well, they have to veterans, and it's a good move for young quarterback. Great Glen in $18 million to be a backup because you eventually drafted moved up to get Mr Biscuit. I just Yeah, That was good, right? Yeah. That was before John Stafford versus something else. Yeah. John Kennedy say ESPN Internet. 79 377 cents. What's gonna David in Wisconsin on the Bears, David. Hey, What's up, guys? Um Yeah, whatever they do with quarterback in the draft because they're going to draft one at some point. I really just hope it's not Mack channels. As long as it's not him. Trade up. I'm fine. Why you don't like Mack Jones Man flavor to my white on Alabama's Mike Jones. Because nowadays You're a pocket passer, young quarterbacks. They don't work. Like all all the pure pocket passing quarterbacks. They're all in their thirties. Really like what goes around comes around. The trends always seem to come back, and I think that I think it's the Bears did that Chicago is gonna start in Chicago. It's sort of like, you know, it's the mullet. You keep it long enough. Eventually, people were wearing moments again. I'm so tired of this excuse in Chicago from fans and we never had a really good has always been our defense. That we win champions. Well, there's a there's a new age. Well, no, that's that's somewhat. I know, but they got you pretty good here. True, Okay. All right, so it's like, well You could make always had a great running game doesn't mean that things can't change for the future doesn't mean that you can't be adaptable and change out was always been and say, Well, things that have always been in relations don't mean it's gonna help new age relationships, like things are different these things, but I think I want you just think about Four minutes O J. When you just go around certain organizations within the letter, it's the weirdest and I don't even know the work that I'm looking for. But you make. Don't do your Duke dictionary and help me. It's a weird thing in organizations and style of play in football. I can point to the Steelers are always gonna be the Steelers. They're gonna run the football to go play defense..

"Going to stick around, even if they hired enemies, he's still going to be difficult. I think they'll go with whoever they think the best candidates. It might be Eric the enemy, but it might be Jim Caldwell. Or it might even be Matty before. I don't understand what's going on with this Josh McCown thing. I have no I mean, you are talking about the ultimate Middle finger to watch. And, hey, we're gonna hire a head coach who's never been a coach ever at any level, so I don't even understand what that is. But I think it's kind of chicken and egg right now, Peter, where even if you have if you don't love Eric, the enemy. You can't hire him just a piece of quarterback who still wants out. If you do want to play chicken here and say we're gonna hire because we think this is going to matter then you do hire him. And if you like him, then it doesn't matter anyway. You should've hired him already. Sure. So let me ask you a hypothetical then if it is unsalvageable, and we're past repair and Sean walks, and they part ways is somebody like Matthew Stafford, someone that you view as a possible good fit down in Houston. No. And here's why, Because Matthew Stafford is okay. First and foremost to Shawn has a no trade clause. And so he can decide whether or not he wants to go somewhere, So it's gotta be. You know, I just have to mention that first Matthew Stafford, I think could end up in the division. But it would be if the cold, so they the entire thing is a team who really understands. They can't get a young quarterback. They need a quarterback gonna win. Now They're the ones who are gonna be targeting. And the Texans. I believe Be state. If they move, Watson. Frankly, they're going to get better faster because they're gonna have so many pics. So I think you'll see the text and look for either a guy like to look coming back, stamped Arnold coming back. They're locking on Zach Wilson or or Justin Fields or Trey land, So no, I don't think that I don't think the Texans will be involved in that the staff but I do think he could end up in their division. So we got Matthew Stafford to Shawn Watson. Future mega church and little finger. I figured like we hit it all today, Lance, I appreciate it. I think we've hit just, um Yeah, I think we've hit every segment of pop culture. You can possibly it. I think so. We have done it his lancer line. 97 5 in Houston, My man. Best of luck with the game of Thrones going down there in H Town, Right? Thanks. Yeah, It's awesome where all the bad guys have been winning so far in the owners like Ho door. Afford ofour Lord,.

I sent a tape in of me doing a take or Iran on something or Whatever. That never worked. Jobs. I've gotten evolving, based on You know? I don't like I don't. I don't have any. I don't think there's any There's no nepotism with me. My mom was a teacher. My dad. Worked for the state of New York like I don't have anybody in my immediate family who helped open a door for me. I don't I did not make I didn't network my way into a position like this. Because I had a family friend. Who? Because they liked my father. Or, like my mom, or like my aunt or uncle got me into this business. It is about who you know and Thankfully, I've met people and made a decent enough impression. Maybe not great, but a decent of impression where it helped Launch my career and then help me advance my career solidify my career. The point I'm trying to make here is Eric the enemy, right? This whole situation with him is beyond messed up. And I think it's a very Hey, I'm not the first guy knocking on the door. It was me trying to do. Knock into my microphone to make it sound like I was knocking against the door. I don't know if that worked Sorry. I'm not the first person to knock on this door and pointed out to everybody like, Hey, I'm not winning a race. I'm not the first one. They got to the finish line to say, Eric, be enemies getting screwed. There's only one job left. There's a bunch of other people I'm reading. I'm seeing on Twitter. I'm seeing on the NFL's website Josh McCown. Josh McCown, who was a Texans backup quarterback might go from Backup quarterback to head coach in Skip. The usual requisite steps to be a head coach in the NFL. That is ridiculous. That is that has never worked before. So I don't know what would compel the Texans that think we have We've got something in this. In this guy that we've, you know, he's he's so smart. He's such a savant. He's so brilliant that he doesn't even need to coach at all. Um Josh McCown and Leslie Frazier. Josh McCown in Jim Caldwell. You know, the Houston Texans are casting a wide net where they're talking to everybody there talking toe white applicants. Black applicants are talking tol re tread coaches they're talking to outside the box people like McCown. The obvious higher is staring them right in the faces of the enemy. If Eric be enemy Eric the enemy. Let people know that he was going to be extremely picky. And there were teams he didn't want to work for. And maybe the Texans would be one of them because you read things like the environment. There is rotten and it's a dysfunctional organization and all those things and that's why to Shawn Watson goes out. If we find out that that's why Eric the enemy didn't want the Texans, Jabal, so be it. But why didn't the Jets Hiram? Why didn't Eagles. Hiram, Why didn't Lions, Hiram Why didn't the Chargers Hiram? I don't get it. Getting back to what I said at the top about who, you know. Eric, the enemy works for Andy Reid. Eric, the enemy is Andy Reid's right hand man. History has shown us if you're if you're Andy Reid's right hand man. You get head coaching opportunities even before Patrick Mahomes showed up in In Kansas City. You don't You don't need to be the offensive play caller. You still see Andy Reid with that silly like angry readers warned the worst. Covert 19 masks I've ever seen. He had that iron man mask first, and now he's got what looks like Something that's like a knockoff chief. He doesn't even look like it's team approved this silly Maskey as on but anyways, you know Andy Reid well, and then you seem with laminated play sheet he calls plays. He's an offensive guy. I don't blame him for that. If I was offensive genius, I wouldn't want to pass that on to somebody else. I'm the head coach. The buck stops here. I'm gonna call my own place. So once in a while he's given opportunities he's relinquished, play calling, But for the most part he calls the plays when the chief said the ball that did not stop Doug Peterson from getting a job with eagles that didn't stop Matt Maggie from getting a job with the Bears. One of the things that's actually proven to be. AH, much better move as if you're an NFL had if you're an NFL team looking for head coach You have a much better chance of winning. If you hire an Andy Reid disciple, then if you hire a Bill Belichick disciple To Andy Reid. Disciples in the last 10 years have won Super Bowls. John Harbaugh in Baltimore. Doug Peterson in Philadelphia. Andy Reid disciples do better than Bill Bella check guys look no further than that, Patricia. Or Josh McDaniels or Romeo Cornell or Charlie Weis. You can go on and on. Mike Vrabel was never an assistant coach for ballot check. He played for him. It was Bill Bill O'Brien, who really Nurtured him as a coach. Okay. Even if you want to give Bella check Credit for Babel Rabel. Okay, fine. Italians haven't won a Super Bowl with him. He's got a pretty good job..

"I mean, they do things that are just mind boggling. And now this hiring a guy from the cold staff after they weren't happy with right years ago. What are the Philadelphia Eagles doing, Tony? Yeah, I think they're trying to appease the quarterback. I think they're trying to piece wimps. There is so much cap money involved in that that they can't cut him because then it's a huge cap it and it's It's a big cap it if they keep them, so they're stuck with him. So they're trying to find somebody to coach him out of this funk. And this is just my opinion on. So this is the higher for that Now this might be a sharp young man. This might be the next big day. This might turn it all around, you know? And Howie Roseman is there who is a good friend of mine, You know, so we'll see. But I'm kind of looking at it with one eye open going. Ooh! What happened there? Where'd this guy come from? And Why? Why was he hired over a gym call Will or Leslie Frazier And did they even interview those two guys, you know, or even an Eric the enemy, So I It's Ah, you know it Zen. Interesting. Higher. There's no question. Yeah, well, the you go from one franchise trying to appease the quarterback to another franchise with the Houston Texans that seemed to be doing anything. But I think it's clear that the Texans organization has major issues at the top. The way that they have handled to Shawn Watson. And the way that they have handled this interview process to me, shows some of those issues. I mean, interviewing Josh McCown for the head coaching job, having to be forced essentially to interview the enemy, it seemed, and now Caldwell or Leslie Frazier. Ah, other minorities. It didn't seem like they were bait, and they're being giving a fair chance from the Texans organization, even though their young quarterback to Shawn Watson basically said that they told him he would be involved in the process and gave them recommendations that he would want How do you see this situation playing out with the Texas Not necessarily who they hire here, Tony, But Maura importantly, what's gonna happen with Shawn Watson moving forward. You know, it is extremely important. I worked in the league 15 years 11 as a front office executive and for a scout, and I will tell you this in two different organizations might Leadership starts at the top. And if if you're not stout at the top, there's everything filters down. You're gonna have issues. They're having issues now because of the lack of leadership at the top, you know, So I mean, You're looking at an organization that is in total disarray there in a tailspin. What's gonna bring them out of it? That's a great question that I cannot answer. It's just going to be interesting to watch, you know, Assists unfolds. Moving forward, but it's a mess down there in Houston, there's no question For you. It's gonna happen with Shawn Watson. I mean, if you are, I know the Jets locally in New York have been rumored to or at least maybe they haven't been rumored to, but the fans want to see them. Go out there and get Watson. Um People are saying if anybody could make a mega offer four Hammesfahr as pigs go, the Jets would be that team and a walk to himself. Has hinted at that and certainly reference going in Miami. How do you see it? Playing out? Ultimately what the Sean walks and where do you think he ends up? I think it's also hadn't done. He stays in Houston. I'm with John McClane that beat writer down there. If you don't follow him, make sure you guys do that. He is He's awesome, and I totally agree with him, maybe out of their mind. Betrayed him. You know, I would. I would ask the world knowing I wasn't gonna get it. And make sure that you know this guy is our quarterback moving forward. He had one of his best years of his career, throwing two. Hardly anybody. Trade away, Hopkins and he has already anybody to maneuver the plane field with and still he had. He had a great year. Get out stand here, one of the best in the script, not the best, So They would be out of their minds. They'll run those people out of there if they lead to shop, get out there. Yeah, you can't You get a quarterback like that? You can't let him go on with you. We're talking about Tony Softly, who is the host of the pylon sticks podcast, former NFL VP player personnel called Director and scout. All right, Tony, Here we are. Championship Sunday. I mean, I'm gonna miss divisional weekend or divisional round, then wild card weekend, of course in the 17 weeks in the regular season, three football games left in the year, starting with the Bucks and the Packers. Brady's on a tremendous job getting this team to this point, even though I never thought that he would. I don't think the box would be this good. Their defense coming along their running game has been improving here. They seem like they're getting better over the last several weeks. Taking on one of the great quarterbacks the sport has ever seen. An Aaron Rodgers is looking to add to that resume. And when they know they're Super Bowl, how do you see the NFC Championship game playing out come Sunday. You know, I've always in my years in the league, it was what nine playoff games three NFC Championships in a Super Bowl appearance on was damn lucky to get that and Always want we were always the underdog. So we're both games. I'm going with the underdogs here. You know, Tom Brady obviously went with the new organization show what he could do. Buttered early. The run game came on. Mike Evans is back doing this thing. I think Chris Goblin is a hell of a wide receiver. You got Rob Gronkowski, but it's the Todd Bowles defense, which has been playing like you said. Last. Probably about eight or nine weeks. Lights out. So how did they play Aaron Rodgers. If you pressure him, he gets rid of the ball quick. If you don't have a pass rush, you'll crush you. They have Aaron Jones Green Bay does that's running the ball real wealth. On the devotee, Adam so wide receiver who's gonna cover him and I think in a double them are they going to single coverage? Him? This is the game right here. I think some people are calling this the Super Bowl. But this is the one that I think everybody should have their eyes on. I mean, watching both, but definitely Tampa Bay Green Day because of Tom Brady versus Aaron Rodgers in a whole bunch of their sub lines as well. You put any stock in that first meeting where the Buccaneers kicked their the Packers were and it was really the best books when off the year aside from their win a week ago, that was the only win that they had in their schedule is that you don't want that was an impressive win that have any factor here in this rematch. Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, you know they had the first go around here comes the second. Go around. What's going to change? You know, from a philosophy standpoint, you gotta no huddle. Do you do a lot of up tempo? You more heavy run than you were before. Do you take what they give you? Uh, so yeah, Both the teams know each other from a personnel standpoint, Both coaches know each other..

"Hope You're Friday's going great got Tim Anderson. I want to share that was from later in the show yesterday. It was a surprise guest with us, too. With R B I baseball 21 coming out when we got here that zips sound of some football chatter right there. Gentlemen, there's only one coaching job left open. It is the Houston Texans. It is still open. But according to Tom, Hello, Sarah. The NFL network with all eyes on the Texan's head coaching search. The team conducted interviews today with former NFL head coach Jim Caldwell and longtime NFL quarterback Josh McCown. How about that little Joshie football? All right. So Watson's getting traded, right? He's supporting his way out. Just Josh is one of my favorite guys in football. Is he Does he live in Houston now? No, he lives in Carolina. I think he coaches his son's football team I thought was any heat, though traded or something that they release him where it gets, wasn't he? Sort of with the Texans examine the covert quarterback? He was gonna be a nice idea. Everyone went down. Here's what pal Sarah's second Tweet, says Josh McCown is strong leadership traits and intends to get into coaching. Eventually. He's been rumored as a possible NFL head coach during previous stops, but his plan has been to watch his son play high school, A sons play high school football, then the next in the next few years, and obviously This would change his plan, though, if he got his coaching job I love Josh and I think Josh will eventually be a now outstanding football coach is hard to go from the gridiron to the sidelines. Go from being a quarterback to a head coach. It's just hard to do that, right? Like I don't know. Look, Shawn McVeigh was how young when he took over now. You coached for many years showing Faye was Josh McCown played. Yeah, but like Cha McVeigh was a coach for years before he became a head coach. So you believe that they do have two. Most coaches need to. Yeah, I think yeah. I think anybody needs to go and be part of the The apparatus before they become the captain of the ship. They need to go through some some one of the process. I think. I mean, I think it's You imagine like Cutler's his quarterbacks, coach? Quality control coach? No, no Cheap matches. J. J won't get out of the deer stand long enough to do that. I'm the Shawn Watson. The text goes in today. Trade me. The text goes in right now as much betrayed me. Yes, well, you wanted that's got to discredit Josh. It's not true that while you're sitting here is not tired yet. Yeah, that And also Jim Caldwell should be a head coach in the last. Well, he got a raw deal into choice. Yeah. No, Jack. All of our jokes are directed at Josh McCown, not Jim Caldwell because he should still be eco. Jim Caldwell got a very bad deal. Amazing. She's going back to New England. By the way more. We don't need me to do what to the trust tree. He's going to assist the Patriots coaching staff in a variety of roles. Well, because right now what his son Belichick son is like co defensive coordinator, right? Yeah, And there's a former player that I forget who it is one of their their accomplished library. Is it Is it Giraud Mayo, who is their defensive coordinator as well? I think that there is somebody who it sounds right why I had a good spin as a player who is That's the That's kind of the natural progression is that if you want to be a coach, and I think one day Josh could probably be a fantastic coach, but you have to go through process to the chaplain's their vice president right now. Okay? Yeah, but that's not in Houston's different. Yeah, I know that they're not the model franchise when it comes to that. About what that's what that's who we're talking about here, though, aren't we in Houston? How about Houston? Like they may hire that? I don't know who they're gonna hire. I'm just telling you, I I don't think that that's the right path for those who don't know the guy who is the vice president right now. On runs. The team is a guy who used to be New England's chaplain, and then he left New England. Any was with Houston, and then he was elevated the vice president of the team. Yeah, that's a weird situation, so we're there is some several articles out there. I want to get to this while because we're up against the clock. Um Tim Anderson joined us yesterday. He's outstanding. He's going to be on the cover of R B I baseball 21. The white sacks now are one of the favorites in the American League. And the first thing that we asked him, like many football players, you know, aren't happy with the mad and rating. I asked him, Anderson if he's happy with his RB, I 21 rating. Yeah, definitely. You know the ranking. Don't matter. I know how good I am and realize how good are you so if you for someone who hasn't seen you play Yeah. How would you describe your game right now? Almost palpable. Who will stop me? You know, I'm just I'm I'm a problem. I'm a proud nomads, but honestly, no. Honestly, I just, You know, Madame I just work. It just worked at it day in day out, man. I'm just obsessed with, you know, continue to get better on and off the field. Um, And then I just, you know, just learning myself learning my swing, and I understand, you know? No, I know what I'm doing in the box, or, you know whatever it is Just mostly had an understanding on it. And you know that Once you understand you're gonna you're gonna take the confusion out of anyone taking frustration out of it, and they just build have fun with it. Regardless of what the results are you can you can hear the excitement level in your voice right now. How excited are you about what has transpired as a team? In this off season and your enthusiasm about what's to come in the 2021 season. No, definitely, You know, excited. Um, you could see it. Um, you know, it's been talked about for over the past years to finally be able to get to this point. Um, is definitely you know great. Um, but, you know, We remember what opened felt like last year s so that I think that's enough. They should make everybody hung enoughto continue to go out and try to deliver what you know what the ultimate goal is. Is the World Series. How much contact have you had with your new manager, Tony LaRussa. I'm not a little contact. You know, he takes back and forth. We talk in there. So you know, I'm definitely, you know. Good. "I'm just so happy that I got to play my whole career in Cleveland, and I'm so happy right now that I'm the number one Browns fan on and I'm able to enjoy great playoff run. I'm just trying anything one game of the time right now. You gotta let me just get a few more thoughts for you before we let you run about the other stuff that happened on wild card weekend bills did take down Indianapolis. The Ravens also got a victory up against Tennessee. Those two teams, bills and Ravens will meet this weekend. That should be a fun one between Josh and Lamar Jackson. Absolutely. I mean, two young studs in the NFL. Two guys that can make plays at their feet, and they can make plays, throwing the football down the field couple stingy defense is I mean, it's the playoffs. Football's all about right. Two teams that are playing at their very best right now to Young star's gonna be fireworks. I can't wait to watch. Do you lean more towards Brady getting the best the breeze or the other way around here in the third match up? I think I think Brady gets the best of breeze that will be another one. There's the other end of the spectrum to old guys that were kind of making their final runs at Super Bowls, potentially with really good teams and I like Brady in that one. I think that his team has been playing a little bit better down the stretch. But you never know When playoff football comes around. We saw you just never know who's gonna win like when Pittsburgh Steelers lose the Cleveland Browns at home. Yeah, right. Um, when we get to the final match up since we brought up all of them coming up on divisional weekend, we didn't talk about the Rams and the Packers. A heck of a win for the Rams up against the Seahawks. How much of a shot do you give the Rams up against Green Bay? Well, if they if they could limit the past anyway, they did. Russell Wilson. I think they've got a great chance, right. You know the Packers They run the football pretty well with Aaron Jones, who I think it's probably the second best running back in the NFL behind Nick Chubb. Um, so if the Rams are able to kind of limit that passing game a little bit, they're able to Limit Devante Adam. I give him a chance, but I still I still think the Packers win that one. But it's playoff football. Anything can happen. And then finally big NFL news today. Doug Peterson is out as Eagle said coach three years after winning a Super Bowl. That catch you by surprise, or after reading up about it. And here in some of the conversation, you kind of understand the move. Was really surprising, and it's disappointing to me how quickly in the NFL fans owners they want to move on to the next guy like the grass is always greener On the other side, they don't seem to learn their lessons. And I think the eagle and their fans they're gonna miss Doug Peterson in a couple years and they're going to realize that you want to Super Bowl for us two years ago, first one in franchise history. He knows how to get there. He knows how to develop, uh and build a franchise to win and last year I mean, they had all sorts of injuries and he still took him into the playoffs with Josh McCown is their quarterback on go. I think that was just a really quick knee jerk reaction and one thing I do know that if you want a fair guy, you can always talk yourself into it. And that's when I was reading the comments. That's what I heard from Jeff Laurie. He wanted to fire Doug Peterson. So he talked himself into it about. You know, the vision isn't a line and you start saying these These words, that intangible words that don't mean anything. It just means you wanted to fire him, and you didn't how you're talking yourself into it, So I don't like that Move..

"Well, very difficult, right? I mean, your risk is gonna have to play the game of his life. My guess is they're going to get Travis Keys. Legs involved quite a bit. That is an asset he possesses. That is tough to defend and It's now or never now, right? I mean, I'm not saying you want to get him hurt, But I'm saying you're willing to take a little bit more liberty a little bit more risk. At this point with him in that regard. The problem is their defense isn't good anymore, Lawrence. I mean, they've just been decimated by injuries in the secondary. They've got young kids that shouldn't be playing. As the nickel back. It's truly unbelievable. I was talking with some people from Chicago about this. I swear the Bears can never get their offense and defense playing well at the same time. Even when Cutler would have those good games or Josh McCown had that stretch. The defense wasn't good, but and when the defense's is awesome and killing people, then the offense really struggles, they can never get those two to marry up together. No, you're right about that, Do you? Ross? Do you think it's fair to have this game tonight between the Steelers and the Brown? It just seems there's no place to put it like you're gonna have a disadvantage to the next team. But it just seems unfair to make Cleveland play this game. Yeah. I mean, I don't have a big problem with it, Um, in the sense that You know, everybody's going under the same protocols, right? And you know the Steelers don't have Joe Hayden. They don't have their best corner. He's on the cobra this so he tested positive He's not playing so They're both missing some people they'd rather have to me. At this point. The covert thing is like injuries. I mean, it's part of it, and unless there's a risk The players being together or playing of further spread. I think they got to move forward, and I know it's not ideal for the Cleveland Browns. But think of it the other way. Can you imagine if they want me? No head coach? No, but Tonio This would be like one of the most legendary wins in Brown's history. If they were able to win anyway, and you know, Baker wants to be a part of that, That's for sure. Ross. I was checking out my front page story dot com And at first I was like, Wait is this Ross's site Because I see like marriages and stuff, and I was like, Oh, he's he's helping people out. So what What made you put my front page story dot com together. Yes. So it's a buddy of mine who had the idea and I'm just kind of helping him spread the word, But it is the single best gift idea that I'm aware of. And look, Valentine's Day's gonna be here before you know it, fellas for the people that are listening. Two things What is to be able to say to your wife? Or your girlfriend or whatever. I had a story written about you. That's pretty much the coolest thing you can say to something when you're giving him against like they'll be like what? You have a story written about me. Yeah, I had the story written about you, and then when they see it It looks Lawrence like it's on the cover of the newspaper. It's framed. It's beautiful. And when they read the quotes when your wife reads the quote from you saying, I just don't tell you enough how much I appreciate everything she does for the family..

Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears quick thoughts
"Next up lions bears. It ain't Trubisky. Chicago's defense is number one in the NFC. Okay. Number four in the NFL. They're number one in turnover differential. Listen, it's a little like Dak wins last night and everybody freaks out. They had the running game and the defense, and they had the lead bottom line in Chicago. Matt Nagy is the less well-known version of the ram Sean McVay McVeigh's got stars offensively left tackle running back quarterback receiver. What the bears are doing right now with Mitch Trubisky to me, it's the story of the year. I talked to people inside the NFL year ago that thought maybe the kid was a bust Trubisky. This year twenty two DS seven picks and a quarterback rating over one on one. I don't think it's him though. Next up bills jets. Bowls fired yet. The jets have lost four straight Sam darnold left. It wasn't Sam darnold. Josh mccown came in and he was awful quarterback rating thirty nine listen, the parking lot got empty by halftime the team quit. You gotta remember Buffalo's fourth quarterback this year. Matt Barkley came in and dropped a forty burger on them. This was about effort again, I feel bad for Todd Bowles and Steve Wilton Arizona, but these young defensive coordinators feel like flip phones and twenty eighteen they and the GM should go with Bev. No offensive players left tackle need, a new one, right? Tackle need a new one center. Average running backs below average tight end. Good should be third tight end wide. Receivers a bunch of dudes just guys. Next up falcons Browns. Woke up dangerous. Listen, it was a perfect setting for a rookie quarterback played with the lead against the bad defense. The running game was humming for Cleveland and Baker Mayfield. Who's got a lot of swagger only. Add to throw the ball twenty times tied for the least in the NFL. Never forget when Big Ben came into the NFL. Remember that first year? Big bend didn't fill the football member. Philip rivers. I here in San Diego. Didn't tell the football. He attempts seventeen throws. This has how you manage a rookie quarterback Duke Johnson. And Nick chop are tremendously talented running backs. They got a lead that defense is the real deal. They had very few third downs. They didn't ask a ton. And they asked him to be accurate this play right now, you're watching was his best of the day. But after the game he was all fired up. When I woke up this morning. I was feeling pretty dangerous. He is good behind the mic. A next up cardinals chiefs. Lights camera action. Join I disagree on this too. I understand celebrating. I get it. The NFL wants free social media buzz. I totally get that. But at some point second quarter ask Andy Reid if he loved this. That's a fifteen yard penalty have to have rules mine. Knock on celebrating is ultimately it will become taunting or penalties. So how about a new rule? You can celebrate all you want inside the end zone. That's already a roll. Well, he got he got. Well, I mean, they're not going to the penalty for the lambo leap, but he got penalized because he used the prop.

Jets QB Sam Darnold likely out Sunday with strained right foot
"Layups. So I understand why coaches are protective in terms of who's revealing the injury news. But this is not about being protective with Sam darnold about who's revealing. The injury news darnold didn't really say much of anything after the game other than perhaps slightly indicating that he was banged up. But there was nothing that it was serious that this is something that's going to sideline him forced him to miss time. No indication whatsoever with respect to that. Then a report emerges early Wednesday before Todd Bowles has a press conference that. It's an injury that certainly gonna keep him sidelined. They could be a multi week injury in this after reporters came into watch practice on Wednesday and Sam darnold was nowhere to be found. They believed the latest report that I read was that he was in street clothes. He wasn't even in jets gear. So you knew he wasn't taking part in practice. And then people figure write something up, and then Todd Bowles confirmed it and his press conference. Now, if anything what is the takeaway of all this like, I said who cares the details. The time line of the injury. The bottom line is it's an injury, and he's going to be sidelined. Josh mccown is going to get most of the first team reps from a coaching perspective. That's priority. Number one. You're not here to appease to the court of public opinion. That is the one thing that I will defend coaches and players to at nauseam. They are not put on this world. They are not put on the map. So that they could tell individuals who passionately root for those teams what they want to hear. That's not their job. The one thing that never gets old is that dissection of the press conference. What guys it gals say in front of a microphone and more often than not it's meaningless because it has no bearing on what goes on on the field. And I think the perfect poster child, by the way, this this subject this exact point I'm selling here is Odell Beckham junior. Talking about a player that is constantly scrutinized for. Actions on the sideline or words that come out of his mouth and at the end of the day. When it comes to effort when it comes to productivity. Can't really fault him for falling short in that department. And we'll get into that. When we come back because the jets are not the only team with drama. The giants also have some drama as they get set to start the second half of the season with a one in seven more. There's eight games left hard to believe eight more games of seeing whether or not the giants can break out of their offensive issues, and whether or not they can keep things competitive and perhaps get on a winning streak schedule. You can make argument based on paper that it's not as overwhelming as the first half of the season. And not so quick when you actually break down the numbers, and you look at some of the defenses giants have a huge challenge ahead. But there's a lot of meaningful football for a team. That is still breaking down the nuts. And bolts of what this team is gonna look like in two thousand nineteen so stay tuned for that. As we move along here on the sports zone. Lance better with you eight hundred three to one zero seven eight hundred three to one zero seven ten the voice of New York seven ten wer times,

Has Sam Darnold Secured Jets Starting QB Role
"There's, another rookie quarterback that is making a big Mark in the. Big Apple, Sam darnold is trying to earn the jets starting quarterback job and. Friday night in the battle of New York against. NFL preseason roundup: Bridgewater, Darnold sharp for Jets
"Jets have an awful offensive line and teddy Bridgewater is absolutely viable on an open market. You can get stuff for teddy Bridgewater to me. He's a starter for about eight teams in this league. You know, this is what the eagles did. Bradford got picks moved up. What are they going to do in New York with Bridgewater and darnold both. I think good enough to play Bridgewater though. I think pri- better today and certainly tradeable. Well, Colin, I'm pretty connected with those jets guys and they also same thing what an embarrassment of riches because it's not just Bridgewater who looks good and it's not just Josh mccown viable starter in the NFL. Year you, know he caught some. Balls got some, yardage didn't really. Score it was my first pick in So, I kind of. Retired from from fantasy this year I gotta take I'm taking. A year, off maybe I'll come out of retirement later you know. Make, a big big presentation here around the radio station anyway we'll see if he. Can start finding the end zone a little bit more I know that. Something he and the falcons wanna do and Matt, Ryan we'll see if he can return. To MVP, form but what, a tough, division they, have I. Mean seriously the Panthers the saints the bucks it's tough although they're catching a bit, of, a break right now because the buccaneers I again listen they've. Been underwhelming the past couple of years to get Jameis Winston being bencher suspended for. First Things First
Antonio Brown pitches Dez Bryant to the Steelers
"Why? If you're the newer jets, aren't you trying to come to some agreement in some kind of middle ground with Sam Donald on this because that means every other contract that comes to be, you have to come to every other every other contract, but Sam Donald doesn't play every other position he plays the quarterback which is premium change in any way. Now you're seeing more guarantees. And one of the few teams though that have this language in their contract, and this is this happened, Jill votes with the with the chargers chargers as an organization in the NFL our they regard. They're actually picked to win the AFC how the organization regarded around the national football. Everybody says that the charges are one of the worst organizations and football in terms of how they deal with contracts, how they relate to their players. So I don't think the charges are the model for what you wanna do. If you're the New York Jets, this all aside week one who's the starting quarterback for the jets, I would like it to be teddy Bridgewater just because the jets have three games in ten days. They've got a Monday night game Sunday night game in Thursday night on the road in Cleveland. I would like it to be teddy Bridgewater just because I think that's a lot for a rookie quarterback to digest. But I think that we'll see Sam Donald sooner rather than later. I think the last time we saw first round draft pick not play at the quarterback position is what he sees and was Aaron Rodgers back in two thousand five. You don't think Josh mccown. Listen, I love Josh mccown, but I think we saw the best of Josh mccown was last year being five and eleven journeyman quarterback for we all agree on that. But teddy Bridgewater we don't know how healthy he is. I mean, three games in ten days is a lot. You almost feel like you throw Josh mccown to the bulls. Let him take a beating then Bridgewater and then eventually late in the season. You get Donald up and going get what you're saying. But Todd Bowles has got to win more than five. Your. Chris, we're making stick around even long. Could Dez Bryant teaming up with Antonio Brown and Pittsburgh AB. Sure. Hope. So that's next on first things. First. Back here with Chris Canty and we are talking Dez Bryant a few days into most NFL training camps. And Brian is still not on a roster while the Browns and Bryant reportedly have mutual interests. Steelers wide receiver. Antonio Brown took to Twitter to recruit Dez. Brown tweeted, come play with me, does Bryant. Let's get the chip, eat greedy, big plates, see better option for Dez Steelers, Browns would go Steelers just because it would seem like if you add to that Brown's receiving group with Josh Gordon Jarvis Landry seems like that would be a combustible mix. So I think I would air on the side of going with a team that's more veteran ball club. They've got a veteran, quarterback, fetch skill position players. They're not going to be relying on this to be a number one or number two option for that matter because they got juju Smith Schuster. So I look at the Steelers situation, say what that probably fits Dez a little bit more than the Cleveland Browns. And plus we know that Ben Rothlisberger. Has been known to pay backyard football a little bit. Being able to add live run the scramble drill pretty much better than anybody in the NFL. I think Dez Bryant would fit that style more so than the Cleveland Browns and what Hugh Jackson wants to do with that offense. I get where you're going and where you come in from. But I think that das- wants to have a great year wherever he goes. He only wants a one year deal, so he wants to put up some type of numbers. So next offseason he can get a big contract in Pittsburgh. I mean, obviously got Antonio Brown. You got juju Smith soocer levian Bill catches a lot of balls like he got one hundred and thirty two targets lash..

New York Jets choose Sam Darnold
"You know i pop ing numbers each and every saturday so that was a great choice the other new york team the jets had the third pick in the draft and here's the direction they went i think we have it in the two thousand eighteen nfl draft the new york jets select sam darnold quarterback usa all right so sam darnold was at one point projected to maybe be the first pick and go to cleveland he was mentioned in that slot i think sam darnold going to the jets was a smart move they had to pick a quarterback will it work out there's just no way to know how these picks are gonna work out so much depends on systems who's around them when they're plugged in all that kind of stuff the jets hope that they landed though there he was the star at usc they're hoping he's going to be the franchise quarterback of the future what's interesting is you had arizona at ten picking josh rosen the quarterback from ucla so you had for the first time a usc and ucla player in the top ten chosen in the top ten of the draft and you had four quarterbacks also in the top ten picks in this draft in the first round that's huge and that's historic so we'll see as for the jets like i mentioned they're hoping this this is the highest drafted quarterback since joe nemeth he was the number one overall pick in the nineteen sixty five afl draft you hear what i said nineteen sixty five back to power flower power and everything that happened in the sixties shifts go back that far the jets hadn't used the first round pick on a quarterback since two thousand nine that was mark sanchez and if you go back and just look overall there's only been a handful of times where they've chosen a quarterback now they have certainly done that josh mccown would go into training camp i'm sure is the number one quarterback but that could change so just like with cleveland this coach for the jets todd bowles is not ruling out the.
