"Or basketball school because they didn't have a lot of success on their past summit? At least one would you say, probably still football? Yeah, I mean, that speaks for, I mean, Tennessee is a great athletic department. Basketball has been phenomenal there, but by the way, everyone is about is a football school right now. Daryl, because of the money. Oh, absolutely. No doubt about that. No, doubt about that. Hey, Paul, I was doing the kissing schedule. I've heard that last guy said. I was checking out, okay? I mean, that's just breaking down. Okay, they got ball split, they gonna beat ball state. I say, then they go to Pittsburgh. That's gonna be a big game in Tennessee. That's gonna be an opportunity to show that they're back. But enough, they will probably win that game. But what it's gonna come down to is two weeks later Paul, when they play Florida, again, Florida who has owned them for the last decade and a half. That's the game that's gonna matter. I think they were still losing Georgia. They still gonna lose Alabama and they probably gonna lose either LSU or Kentucky, but if they lose that Florida game, it's 6 and 6 again. If they beat Florida, I feel out chance, but you understand they go 84, maybe 9 and three. And hey, I wanna say one more thing about this. I'm putting this to rest, okay? This is the end of it right here. This is in regards to the Georgia Florida game, okay? You nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. We can have it in answers and when Paul returned to have it, they can have a new where they won't. Having Jacksonville, they can have an engage Bill, they can have it on the moon. It don't matter, but here's the deal, okay? The city of Jacksonville, using the Georgia Florida game as an excuse for making a revenue. I mean, they have an NFL franchise there. They are home to one of the most the greatest southern rock bands of all time. They are skinner. They're right there on the beach. If they make it here, they have a new problem. It looks like the city of Jacksonville is the problem, not the football game, but Phil, even with the football game, I don't think all that would prove to come, but you can't interact with them. So that ain't gonna cut it. That right there is not gonna cut it. And we're gonna bring it ass like it should be. But I think you were dead on that also. Good olds. What's that smell? Speaking of the greatest southern rock band of all time. Let's get to Randy in Georgia. Hey, Randy. Hey, how are you doing today? We're doing great. I wanted to comment on the game, basically. Well, he seemed concerned, but Randy, you have to be. Have you ever heard have you ever heard of football coach, especially one of those as great as Kirby smart come out of his scrimmage and be happy? We're young. We're young. We're breaking down a whole new thing. Kirby smart really needs to do now, and he's not going to be successful, Randy is try to tamp down the expectations. I don't think he's thrilled about being the number one number three team in the country right now, because he knows what he has to replace. And he knows that the difficulty of it and there's just this assumption that George will be back in the playoffs this year. So what did you predict Jordan residence generally? Being out being. I think they have a, listen, having just said what I did, Randy, I still think they have I mean, I'd probably say 11 and one, regular season. I know that I'm struggling to tell you which loss it will be, but I think Kentucky is probably the most dangerous game they have.

"Are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We are back, let's grab some more calls here in Gerald is up next in Kentucky. Hello, Gerald. Hey there. I want to talk about this same going on between cow and stoops. Obviously, is when I was growing up, I was watching Kentucky basketball, but it wasn't in the SEC. It was in the ABA, the Kentucky kernels. And then when I was watching Kentucky, it was actually football. There were beaten Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, we didn't beat Alabama, but they had things under control and you know they wanted a championship in 76, right? Debatable, but yeah, I don't think it held up. But then one of those years they were, they were ten and one. I do remember that. Right, right. We lost that year was to Baylor. But cow needs to beat Kyle needs to button his lip. You know, and we have football school from August to January. From January to we're back. I just asked him if he needed anyway. Bernie is up next. Hey, Bernie. I apologize, Barney here. I just think the caliper really needs to come out to the first football game in front of about 70,000 fans and apologize to the UK football fans and also in these apologize for getting beat by Saint Peter. I mean, it is a lot of basketball fans to be honest with you that I hang out with, which is quite a few are getting sick of Kylie Perry. And that's just what he's done now, stoops is a class act, and I don't think we can say the same for Cal. Thank you. Daryl is up next, speaking of class acts. They probably have three different personalities though, right? Yeah. You sound like you're in a coal mine right now. Can you get a little can you hear me better now? Yeah, you sound great. Okay, I would say that they have two other personalities. We agree with that. Oh, there's no question. Yeah, I mean, no doubt about it. Caliper, you can't use another as many programs at your food to try to make a point. You know, and the bottom line is, I think we all know that Kentucky is a basketball school. That's no big secret, okay? George is a football school, Alabama's a football school. But in the south, color football rules, okay? It will always rude. I mean, in fact, nobody cares about basketball in the record season until the March Madness starts. I mean, it's the only time people start carrying. So many years of covering sports, the most insecure group of people that I've ever come in contact with are basketball coaches. Let me ask you this. Okay, Tennessee. What would you say would you just like to see the football school

"I've got a lot of family that's always jealous, always asking me about the team inside information, you know, it just is how it is, but again, I really loved it, being here and kind of with this job with this aspect of it, you get to get to see the players and then coaches and kind of relate to them more as people, then I would say the average fan does just hearing them interact with the media. I'm just getting to know them personally and bad aspect of it right getting to tell stories be the ones that find out historian tell it to the public, just that aspect of it. Just getting to know them on a deeper level is something that I really love and cherish. Josh ultimately, you know, you're working for a school newspaper, which is a little bit of a, of an unfair description in today's world. It is a digital world, of course. What ultimately would you like to do with the training and the background that you have gotten? Yeah, yeah. I mean, coming into this year, most of my background has just been as a reporter. So I would say I'm inclined to do that. I've done that the most. I really like it. I like writing and telling a story, as I mentioned, but this summer I've got to intern and monitor league baseball and kind of open myself up to a whole world of sports media right. I would say most like an SID, just interacting with the players and kind of being between them and the media. I've got to do a little bit of color commentary on the radio. So I've enjoyed that. I would say right now, like reporting is probably my go to, but again, I've got to do a whole lot and really anything is sports media. I'm going to be totally fine with. Well, certainly all here pulling free, but before you go, we want to we want to get the expert on that campus opinion of how the voles are going to turn out. We understand you grew up a fan. We understand you're close to the sun there, but give us your best prediction for the voles. Yeah. I would say 8 wins, maybe 9 wins at the most. Again, they've got a couple of ranked teams on their scheduled AP poll coming out. Pittsburgh week two in their stadium, that's going to be a big one this year, maybe the year they'd be Florida at home. I don't know. We'll see how that comes out, but again, I think if they win 8 games, that's more than last year, that's a sign of progress for the balls, 9 wins, I would say, is probably their cab I don't think they're quite in double digit win territory yet. Well, Josh, I think if any of your instructors are professors are listening, they're going to give you a very high grade because unlike some of the fans from Knoxville who have called in, predicting perfect records and 11 and ones. You put your journalism at your journalist hat on and came up with what I thought it's a very objective view. You get an a from the crew over here on the show. Hank, thanks for joining us, we are going to be up there in a couple of weeks. And I hope you'll come by and say hello. Absolutely. Paul, thank you so much. Thank you very much. Experience talking to Josh. We'll do that again in a little bit later in the show as we will do it all week talking to all the young people that are involved in sports coverage in the SEC. "And it is back to school week. Remember when you were younger, some of you loved this week, others said, I can't believe summer's over. Which one do you think I was? Welcome back to the show. And we did this every year. It's really, I think, probably the best thing that we do, because we get to connect with we're really with a lifeblood of the SEC as those of the young people on the college campuses. And we're talking beginning right now with one of those young college reporters. Josh lane, who is the sports editor of the UT daily Beacon of Knoxville. Josh, thanks for being our first guest. We hope all is well. I have a feeling there's a lot of excitement building and buzzing on your campus. How are you? Yeah, I'm doing well, Paul. Thanks for having me. Good time to be here. It is great. We saw it today with the AP poll coming out that the vaults were literally right outside of the top 25 when you consider where this program was a year and a half ago on that dark day when Jeremy Pruitt was fired. It's almost inconceivable to think of what Josh has done describe what it's been like for you as a reporter and a student seeing all of this unfold. Yeah, Paul has been pretty exciting, one of the first things I got to do when I stepped up to the editor position was cover that Pruitt firing right. There's a big paper, big specialist to their. So that was a lot of work, but since then coming in and you do go through the process of a coaching change and coaching hires, there's a lot of work that goes with that, but then this first season last year just so exciting. You hear about the offensive Josh hypo brings in but see you in action and see the steps that hidden hooker and center till when all those guys took really, really exciting, exciting work. Just for me as a student and all my fellow students to experience, but also as a reporter, just a cool thing to experience and to get to cover so I'm excited for where we're going this year. Josh, we were up there late last year and I mean, we know about hypo as the offensive play caller and his offensive prowess. But what really struck me in talking privately to one of the football players was the buy in of him personally and you being a student can understand this better than those of us on the other side. Can you describe what it's like on that campus the relationship? With just students and hypo and especially the players in hypo. Yeah, I mean, everyone that I've heard talked about Josh hyper is raved about him, right? I mean, with Jeremy crew before then he just, I guess it's a personality thing sort of, but he's kind of, I don't know, reserved is maybe the best word for that, but he definitely did not connect with the players and definitely the fan base as much as Josh Harper does a note hybrid was always active on Twitter and just a few minutes ago they landed a recruit and Josh pipe was always tweeting about that. I know fans love that. The players they love playing for him. He's just one of those coaches that brings out the best in those players that really connects with them. So I think just the success helps, of course, but I think it's kind of personality based too a little bit with Josh Eiffel and just just how much he really loves and cares about being here and that's one of the earliest things he said when he was first hired was that Tennessee was such an important college football town. You know he's he knows what he's walking into here and just kind of the way he's able to bring about this program in success. The fans respect that and so I think he reciprocates that. Josh lane, the sports editor of the UT daily Beacon talking to Josh, I know you and some of your colleagues have been breaking down the team and trying to get to where those season would be one in lost. As you try to talk to the people that matter and look at it through your own eyes, what sets this team of heart other than the obvious the quarterback position where do you think the season will be will be determined? Well, offensively, they're running back game right. They lost time on Evans. He transferred out to jabari small, is going to be stepping up there. I think you might, I think he's going to have a good year, right? He come in and he's kind of transformed his body he's picked up a bunch of weight to help himself out, be more versatile as a running bag. And the coaching staff was really talked about him and just the mindset that he's had coming in, knowing that he's the number one guy. That's really helped him out the offensive line. They're returning for their starters, 5 stars from a year ago. So that's very experienced line. The left tackle position is the one that's still open. Probably not going to know who the starter there is for another week or so. But again, offensively, I think there's a lot of experience that are obviously where you guys saw that Cedric toman Lee in the way. But I think if you look at Tennessee's defense and last year, just kind of middle of the road for them. That's the one where I think that's where the season is going to be one and lost to say how you did, right? Cornerback debt, this kind of thin right now, still a lot of questions there up and down the defense. So I think depending on how they play that might determine how far Tennessee's offense goes. Josh, let's talk a little bit about your role and your colleagues role at the UT daily Beacon. It's certainly a great time. And any young person's life, let's talk a little bit about you for a second. What brought you to Tennessee? Well, I've lived here in Knoxville, my whole life. Really, I couldn't imagine going anywhere else other than college, right? I mean, it was the closest one in financially and made the most sense for me, but I mean, I grew up just Tennessee was always a part of me, you know? Being here right outside the college town went to a lot of games and stuff as a kid. I just really couldn't imagine going anywhere else. And so yeah, I'm super happy with how everything's worked out, all the opportunities. I've gone here and kind of how all of Tennessee athletics are trending right now on the right direction. It's really worked out for me to be here at this time. In terms of your own existence, being that the sports editors are really cool position you get to do things that probably the average student can't. You have access. What has that been like, especially for someone who was a fan and grew up around that program and now has an all access pass to see everything that's imaginable. Yeah, it's been pretty good.

"You're doing? Absolutely not. What happens when two Hollywood celebrities become owners of a Welsh football club? Is it community looking around going, what are these two guys doing here? Successful. It will be one of the biggest days in the history of the town. FX is welcome to Wrexham premieres August 24th on FX stream on Hulu. Paula, there have been more changes, probably in the last three years than in my 47 or 49, whatever it's been, this will be the 34th years of head coach. And we can either gripe about it or we can fix it. And we need to fix it. College football is a wonderful thing and has been for years and it's still very popular. We've got to take care of the players and we got to take care of the fans because without fans, we have no game. And those are the two things we've got to look at. So I understand in IO, I like it. There's a lot of great things about it. The first thing I thought about was an artist on your campus can sell his art, a musician can go play out a concert or a bar and make money. So Washington student athletes be able to do the same. The thing we didn't do, we threw it in place for that guidelines. The NFL has a lot more guidelines than we do. And what we've done now through recruiting within IO is we've made it where it's unequal and those that are paying more money through the collectives are getting better players. Now, the 7 or 8 that have been the best in the country have been the best in the country the last few years anyway. But we need to make it where it's more fair on signing date. The second part of that is you add the transfer portal and I altogether Paul and we talk about tampering. There is some tampering. And there's people that are buying kids off campus to go to other places. I really don't like that. Some people say, well, the kid has to be interested in leaving. Well, he's not making any money, and he offering 500,000. He's going to leave most likely. And I understand that. We had two that were approached on our team this spring, and they both decided to stay, but we need to get rid of tampering. And I don't know how you do it. We got a lot of smart people out there that have got to make some hard decisions. And then we've got to get it, so we just don't allow kids to get up one day and quit because they're having a bad day. Because it's not a good message for kids. They're not learning to fight through things. All of us have had to fight through things in our life and that kid gets up. Well, I had one come in. He said, it's 6 30 meeting. He said, coach, I'm gonna quit. I said, why? He said, I'm second team. I'm not playing very much. I don't feel really good today, and I don't want to practice. So I'm going to go visit some other places. That's not a good lesson. And I do think Paul, and getting into mental health and counseling here too much that there's so many options for these kids now about NIL and how much money should I get and how much is it going to take and I'm making decisions on money instead of what's best for my school or where I'm going to live when I get through. Transfer portal. I'm having to make decisions. Should I transfer am I mad? I should have been playing. And 4000 kids are still in the portal that went in last year and didn't even get to come out. So there are a lot of, there's a lot more pressure on kids, mentally than ever before, and that's why we need to clean this out. We need to get guidelines for NL, and we need to get guidelines for the transfer portal. And we need to figure out some way to keep people from poaching players off the teams that have some great players that they've recruited so hard to get that aren't quieting aren't winning. Finally, coach Brown, you were a Texas when we almost saw one of the most amazing realignments in history. It didn't happen, but it came close. And we're watching it again with the USC and UCLA and so many other things going on. And there's a lot of talk about the ACC where you currently reside about what the long-term outlook is going to be with the changing prices and price tags associated with various leagues. What do you think is the future of the Atlantic coast conference? When I was at Texas, we spent a year year and a half talking about going to the PAC 12. And it got down to the last day and I thought we were going. We were looking at recruiting areas. We were looking at scheduling and then one day there became a long, more network. And that kept us in Oklahoma in the big 12. So I spent a year and a half trying to figure all that out and what we were going to do in wasted a whole lot of energy and a whole lot of time. I do know that with all of the changes in college football NIL is going to cost schools a lot more money because the boosters that are going to pay the collectives are going to do that instead of give the money to the athletics departments. You've got cost of attendance. You've got now an academic stipend that's coming this year. So athletic directors are paying out a lot more money and they're not getting a lot more in. So that's why they're looking at TV negotiations because you're going to have to have a lot of money to be able to sustain what you've got to move forward in athletic programs. I don't know where it's going. I personally and my college football fan. I don't think it's healthy to have 50 teams that have a 16 team playoff and that's all we have. Because there's going to be a lot of schools in this country that won't have the opportunity to have the same type program, there will be a lot of kids that will not have the same opportunities to experience what we're all experiencing and power 5 now. And if we hurt power 5, it's going to hurt group of 5 FCS division two division three. And I think it'll drift down and really affect football more than anything we have ever done. So I personally hope for the fans and for the kids, we get to keep good conferences across the country that are competitive. We get to keep ourselves and we get to keep football more like it is understanding that there is a financial. Obligation for these athletic directors that they got to make some money. And that's what all of them have to look at is what about the game in general? When I was the president of the AFCA, we always said to our board members, don't vote for what's best for your school, vote for what's best for college football. North Carolina will be fine. They will be in that group of 50. But when you start looking at everybody else, I know it's not best for college football for 50 teams to play out of really high level and everybody else kind of go away. Always a pleasure. I know you got plenty to do. We appreciate you making time for us. Coach Mack Brown, thank you so much. Thanks, Paul. Appreciate you. Thanks for having me on. Always great to see you, Mike Brown. What an entertainment and entertaining segment and to begin with what he said if you were just joining us about he and coach Davis are perfectly agreeable to be friends. "We're an inexperienced team because our last two years have been our best recruiting years, but you're supposed to win close games by coaching. And that's confidence. And that's getting people in the right position. So that's what we've got to do. Younger coaches can't say that 'cause they're worried about getting fired and it's fact. And I can say it because I believe it. And it's there and we need to do a better job. You know how difficult it is to win a national championship. You won one with Jean shizuka as your defense of coordinator and you now have him back on your staff. How did you lure him out of the bright lights of television in the same place? I'm currently working to become one of your top assistants. Well, I was stupid to leave that job. And I told Jean, I was so dumb. I need to get you to be as dumb as I was. He joined me too. That worries me about his intelligence level. He said we work four months a year and they pay us for 12. How good is that, man? Now you have to work all 12. It was different for Gina and I, I tried to hire him three years ago when I came, but he was still watching his son in high school and his his son is a safety at Furman and playing well. And gene knew a TV. He couldn't watch him play Saturdays. So this was just a great opportunity for me to get him to come back and he has made such a difference in my life because he's been in my chair. He's won a national championship as a head coach. He's won a national championship as an assistant coach with me. So we know how to do this together and he walks into the room with credibility. He won 11 games when he was here as a defensive coordinator with coach fedora before. So he's familiar with this place. The place loves him. The kids saw him on TV like they saw me. So he walks in the room immediately and gets their attention. He's doing a tremendous job. Talking to coach Mack Brown coach, listen, we've had previous conversations about this next subject. And you are among the most honest about it because you're in a position where you can speak your mind and you've already done that on television and you did it when you were in Texas. So where are we now is year two of the NIL is underway. The

"Welcome, though. We've reached the middle of August and yeah. Top 25 is out with last week it was a coach is this week it's the broadcasters and the writers and it is no surprise to anyone who is at the top. That is the university of Alabama. And I think this marks the 15th straight year that at some point under Nick Saban, sometimes it took to the final day of the season, Alabama has been number one in the country. That is a mark that will likely never be matched. The list is pretty familiar. Ohio State, Georgia, and Clemson, Notre-Dame. They play Ohio State first week of the year. A and M at the number 6 position Utah taking on Florida in week one, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Bayer. After that, the Oregon ducks, Oklahoma state, NC state. USC coming off of a four and 8 record, the name says it all. You got the top one of the top quarterbacks in the country and the top receiver Michigan state. My Amy Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Kentucky, all missed 21 and wake forest then next, Cincinnati, Houston, and BYU. Speaking of Kentucky, there has been a lot of chattering going on over the weekend. We told you Friday about the back and forth between stoops and caliper, the athletic director got in the middle of it on Saturday and by most accounts he sided with his football coach and this is what Mark steeps had to say over the weekend. And listen, we all know. This program wasn't born on third base. So some may, but I could promise you this football team didn't wake up on third base. I did a lot of work. We did a lot of work. The commitment from the Joe crafts and so many different people in Mitch and doctor barnhart, you know, doctor caputo, so many people have done so much. That you have to have a respect and appreciation for. We all want more. You thought it would be deescalation instead. It was the opposite. You heard Mark stoops make reference to it. We weren't born on third base. That was in reference to calipari saying, they Kentucky's a basketball school. We're happy when the football team wins ten games. That was a major shot. And Mitch barnhart considered among the top athletic directors in the country, didn't exactly stand by his basketball coach and a lot of chatter over the weekend, and many are coalescing around the thought for the very first time maybe in school history that the football coach at UK may be more important right now than the basketball coach. Kirby smart had a scrimmage over the weekend the national champs getting together in Athens like they would get together somewhere else. And by all accounts it went pretty well. Miles Brennan, who has started at LSU over the years and continues to be hurt, is saying, you know what? I think I've had enough. That could be a sign that he was not going to win the starting job. Just could be. And Matt Brown, the Texas coach turned ESPN commentator, turned North Carolina coach, is calling for more accountability on his staff. Remember, a year ago, Mac brown's team started the season, ranked in the top ten. And we begin setting hello to our good friend Matt Brown that in Chapel Hill, joining us today and coach great to have you on. I'm sure if you were commentating on your season last year, you might have more diplomatic words than you used recently, but it's good afternoon and it's great to see you again. Thanks, Paul. Great to see you. And may I say that our basketball coach Hubert Davis and I are getting along wonder. I don't start with, but we can start with that to get that out of the way if you were gonna bring it up or question it all. Hubert was at practice the other day and we're great friends and really enjoy each other. No Paula, it's interesting we exceeded expectations of first year. They'd won 5 games in two years before we got here. One two the year before we got here, we won 7. Could have won 9. But everybody was excited about 7. We won a bowl game then the second year we go to the orange bowl for the first time, school history have a and M time with 5 minutes left to go in the game and don't finish. And blow it and then last year we lost a lot of great players. We lost 4200 yards of offense. But as you and I have always been asked to do right after the national championship game, people start saying right the teams for next year who knows. Chemistry, injuries, but we have Sam Howell. And we were on a good trajectory, but we didn't handle it well. Texas, we got so we understood how to handle expectations. We weren't there as a program yet. And I couldn't get that done. I was disappointed in me. And then going back and studying the program, we've lost on the road, and we've lost 14 games by 7 points or less. Most of those on the road, we've lost three overtime games. That's coaching. That's what we're asking our coaches to do. We're a very talented team.

Don't ask, cam. He's a Tennessee graduate. He's taking Laura. Thank you. We'll more on the zipper zipper game. Hey, you know what I want to know? I want people to tweet us their stories of when they had their fly down in the most embarrassing moment. I want all of them. Fine bob. Cat Laura. At Laura. I want these stories. I love them. Knoxville's beautiful. Let's talk to those overalls. You don't have to worry about your fly in the overalls, right? It's already up. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. And we welcome you back. We are live in Knoxville. Final hour and change in Ryan McGee joins us here on set. Another homecoming for you. Yeah, I was just telling Laura that I had a girl break up with me. I didn't eat that tree right there. The one on the right. Did you really? Yeah. It was and we were that couple. You know, the couple has the argument out in public, nearby is changing classes and they're like, oh, no, I can't believe they're arguing out in public. And it's all they have right there. So there you go. I'd forgotten about it. Now I hate to bring back the zoom with my therapist later. How you doing? It was come coming for you too. So I think we both went over circle park, right? Yeah, we had a conversation over at the daily Beacon office with all the student reporters today. It was really fun. Yeah, I went down to I never wrote for the Beacon. But I did radio at wut. For sure. 90.3 I used to walk past it every day. Yeah, there you go. Well I went down there and yeah, it was great. It was interesting because so much throughout campus has changed. Oh yeah. But when you go into the campus radio station, it's still smells exactly like it did in the 90s. So yeah, so it felt good. I'm not sure I passed it every day. I'm not sure I've ever been in there. If you would like to go one down. I got people down there. I'll be happy to take you down there. Because at the time, the idea of being on the radio just did not so all right, so just to be clear. Yeah. I am a senior writer to ESPN and I never wrote for the daily Beacon of Tennessee. And you have made a fairly comfortable living in radio over the years and you never worked on the campaign. I never even I mean, I'm trying to remember, I don't know if worried, where it used to be was on the same floor as the newspaper. I walked past it every day and I had zero interest in ever walking. No, there's probably smoke coming out of the car. Everyone in there. Well, I'm serious. If you'd like to go. Yeah, I would. I've got people. Really love it to her. I don't know that I've ever I don't know that I've ever been trying to think if I was ever in the office of the daily Beacon. I love the day. I was a voracious daily Beacon reader. Like I would eat lunchable myself and read the Beacon and all that, but I did not share this with the staff today, but a lot of things happened in that office. So imagine just imagine them what may or may not have happened in the campus radio station. An alternative rocket to o'clock. Yeah. I remember listening to it. Yeah, the statute of limitations. I'm pretty sure it was expired, if you'd like. That was the old joke for you. Radio jocks out there. Why did certain songs get play like stairway to heaven? Either got a DeVita. Yeah, it got it. Like 15 minutes. There were two songs that you played that were 11 to 15 minutes for a reason. Because you were either going to the bathroom or you were up to something. Yeah, or up to something in the bathroom. Yeah, yeah. There you go. Great to be back on campus fall. I don't know. It is almost predictable to say, but it is always unique to come back here. And there's another memory I haven't involved you. And it was one of the more awkward moments of my career was right right here. Yeah. One was just three years ago four years ago. Four years ago, I did my farewell interview with Butch Jones right up here. So then the addendum to that story is in the SEC nation bus. I was on the bus and bush got married because I told this story, I was on the bus and Butch came one of the bus just to wait because it's like the green room before he went out to do the interview with you. And he I went out of my way to set the microphone down and say, coach how you doing? The let him know. We're not because I want to ask him because it was a tough time. How are you doing? It was rough. And what he continued to do was give me the talking points. And then he walked off the bus and went straight and said I went with you and started to give you the talking points and that was and then I'll cover the game that day and it was the only time I don't have any dozens of games I've been to in the same as the only time I've seen people leaving at the end of the first quarter. I think it was a Georgia game. It was Georgia. No exaggeration I gave was over 5 minutes. It was 24 nothing before you turned around and I was sitting with the just retired bud Ford. Who I was convinced, the longtime of sports information director, Tennessee who I was convinced was going to go down to the coaches booth and start shoving guys out the window. Because he was so vocal about it was the strangest atmosphere. Before game and inside of a game, 'cause there was a lot of enthusiasm about that day like there is here today, but it just was different. It felt like everybody was just yay, we're excited. Like I didn't know for a really bought it and literally at the end of the first quarter people were leaving the game. I ran down from the press box. I took a picture of people leaving the game at the end of the first quarter because I'd ever thought I'd see it. But that was that seems like a hundred years ago now. It does. And let's see how many coaches and so on. We're this is the second one. So things that we've gone great since the last time we were here for Georges game. I don't know. I think there's a level of cynicism about the feeling now, but it does feel just a little bit different. Well, I think that people are enjoying it this year. Right. And I don't know that even when even when people forget, that one, I guess was it 2017, but that was a great year. That was Dobbs no booty. That was albums of exciting year and it just never that great before or after. But the feeling around here now is people are actually excited about it. They're enthusiastic and that because football can be fun and the way they're playing a football even losing is fun. I'm hearing music that I don't know what that means, but I guess that means that I thought maybe there was a concert or something. It might be..

"Please tell the story because so good. So it wasn't planned. In the middle of the show, somebody was Jordan. It was Jordan Rodgers idea. Was it okay? I didn't know that. That's because you didn't have your earpiece in, but it was his idea. So they decided for me to dress up as a yell later. Yeah. We knew he was picking Texas a and M yeah. Okay, big deal. Right. And so there's a finite amount of time that you can change clothes. Yeah, and at first we were going to take one of the yell leader outfits off of a current yell leader and have them where your clothes. But that got way too complicated because they were bigger. So at the very end of the show, I zip in to a tent. Yeah. I got undressed. I put the shirt on. And by the way, I don't get starch in my I mean this, you could that thing was stiff. You could cut somebody's throat with the shirt. I mean, it was that stuff. I saw it, and I was like, I could punch that. I get the shirt on. And I know this is just exactly what happened. This isn't. No, this is true. Embellishment. Because for anybody who's watching this year, I came out a few minutes later with a shirt and blue jeans on. There's a reason why. So I take my shoes off. And these pants, by the way, Taylor Swift could not have gotten these papers so tight. Wow. But I got in them. Well, have you seen his legs? My goodness. I got in them until the zipper broke. So I am fully dressed as a yell leader from Texas a and M which is a respected university, which honors the military. Yes. 5 days before Veterans Day and I looked down and my zipper's open. Well, you know, and I'm thinking XYZ Paul, come on. Maybe, I mean, in all candor, I would have probably done it at Tennessee. I mean, no big deal. We would have understood here, right? I didn't think I could afford to do that. You had so much going to pick me up too, because the yell later had told me. Oh, oh, I didn't know that. That surprised I was very concerned. I'm thinking they picked me up. Throw me up and there's my zipper open. And I'm spending the rest of my life writing letters to the Bush library. Okay. So that's why that was the backstory. So I didn't know, honestly, I was disappointed when you came out of the tent and you're not wearing the pants. I thought Paul's only halfway committed to this thing. And then it comes out and you know, he does the whole thing, he gets a little picky. He's hoisted on the yell eater shoulders. I thought for sure you were going to fall over. I didn't see I didn't hear what they said. And then my wife told me, she said, Laura was really worried. I was so concerned. I thought I kept saying, so it's so funny because people probably think some of our show is scripted. It's all very much our real reaction to things. I thought if they drop you, I mean, I was behind. I don't know what I thought I was going. I thought I'm going to catch you. I probably could. I'm very strong. But either way, if they had dropped me. That would have been.

"Donate it to somebody else. I said, okay, sorry. I said, you know, we could do it right now. No, no, I'm good. Yeah, no, it's so those are, I mean, I've had you're somewhere, you're at a restaurant. And somebody will come up and they'll introduce you and they go, oh, and my friend, so and so and the guy will go, well, would you like a picture with Paul? My favorite too is because it's so rarely falls very famous. So he's sandbagging here, but so rarely anybody will have any idea who I am, which is great. But sometimes if someone sees me taking picture with somebody else, they'll be like, oh, maybe I need to go take my picture and then they'll say, so who are you? There's a picture. There is this great joke. I heard it a million years ago. Involves Frank Sinatra. Famous people in the world. Yeah. It was with Don Rickles. He went he saw Sinatra out of New York restaurant. And Sinatra had like entourage. More entourage than you have. Less than Tim Tebow has. He went over to Sinatra and he said, I'm with a new girl. That's how they talk back then. Oh well. Well, you would know. Well, how was it there? And Sinatra goes, would you come by? And I just, my first date with her. Yeah. Sinatra walks over, and there's like 5 guys with vests and guns and other people. Yeah. And he goes, done. It's so great to see you. And rickles looked up. He says, Frank, can't you say I'm having dinner? That's so good. Oh, that's great. Yeah, I'm gonna try that on you. Next time I have a really fancy dinner, I'm trying to impress somebody. I'm gonna see if I can get you to come over and then I'll say that to you. I don't think that. I don't know if I've ever been anywhere where it was really that impressive. Yeah, well, that's just how you think about yourself, which is it's probably very apropos to where we are right now because you are such a legend here in Knoxville and you don't consider yourself that. But that's one of the great things about you. So humble man of the people. Is he the best? My ultimate goal, though, one of my favorite things about volunteer fans is that they will have the overalls that have the orange and white stripes on it. I don't know why it seemed like this is a shot. No. I love yours. I think they look amazing in my ultimate goal is to get Paul wearing those. Don't you guys think that'd be great? Where do you get those? Yeah, we're gonna go get some. Ball shop. Ball shop. All right, we'll be there later. How later are you guys open? How late's ball shop open? Yeah. All right, so we'll get Paul. I know you're not run over there while you're here. You know what? I'll finish this up for you. You go get those. That would be worth it, right? People could suffer through me doing your show long enough for you to go get some of those overalls. I just think it would only be right. I think, you know what? You need an extra layer in this weather. It's a little chilly. Okay. We did a show. It was I remember distinctly. It was two years ago tonight. We did a show in Oxford. Yeah. And I had picked up something. I don't know what it was. Oh my goodness. And I literally couldn't get marquee reactors producing the show tonight said you have to get off the show. He was so sick. That was so sad. My goodness. So I'm so worried about you. I was watching the show inside and I felt so bad watching you outside. But you were, I mean, you couldn't even speak. You had some and I think you yeah, we've turned a new leaf with you, because now you take better care of yourself, which makes me really happy. You guys, Paul's been really getting it in the gym too. That's been, that's his new thing. Right? This is like this is your life, Paul fine, bam, huh? Yeah, it is. Well, I just think that people should know more about you because you're very private, but I like to share things about you. So I know anything about you that no, no one cares about me. I got nothing. For the people that get mad at us when we don't talk football. Which is a lot of people. Yeah, yeah. You know what? I like those people because they're so committed to football that you can't have any reprieve on this show. We've already had Roman and Tebow. That's not enough. We need our current Tennessee player. We've had countless. But we need more. You're on here for a couple of minutes a week. And people get very upset. Yeah. Anyway, I love you guys for calling us out and keeping us on track. So I'm going to get us to the nitty Gritty here. Did Roman say on this show what he said to me earlier about how he thinks Tennessee is going to score 21 points tomorrow? He did. I think that's really interesting. He also called that Alabama fans for being crazy. Which is even better than his statement about Tennessee. Anyway, I think that's possible too. And I think Georgia wins the game. They number one team in the country far and away at this point. I'm not sure. What? You're picking Tennessee? Paul. I just said I'm not so sure. I didn't say anything else. All right, but seriously, you think it's competitive? I think it's more competitive. At the end of the program tomorrow. I'm coming out of smoky. Okay. Last week, did everybody see when he came when he joined the yell leaders at Texas a and M and a story about that?.

"You're a student, you're trying to find a craft or perfect a craft, how do you deal with that? I think at the end of the day, I heard some good advice. It's just all about what you value school and the classes are important. And that's how you get a degree. But at the end of the day, experience is experience. And so I want to put as much effort as much time energy into this into my job here at the Beacon as I can because as I mentioned earlier, it is student journalism, but at the end of the day, we want to be respected and treated just as any other journalist. As any other major news, news media company. So it's just that just that idea of putting all my effort into this, just you put in, you get out what you put in. So history like I would a real job because this is what it is at the end of the day. And what I think some people don't understand is you are walking a very fine line, you you're a student. You're not working for an independent entity. The student publications office is part of the university, but you're still having to give honest portrayals of what is happening, especially when you go through something as we all did with the end of Pruitt. I mean, that is a conflicting Odyssey. Yeah, I mean it really is, we are editorial independent. So I think we have a little bit more room than normal, but I know in the past they've had stories they've had they broke news and whatever the case may be and they have faced some backlash from the administration. I forget the building or the organization, but one place won't run ads with us anymore because of whatever store they broke. I don't remember the exact example. It's stuff like that. And I think it goes back to that kind of student aspect of it. But they just don't use the same. But it is a fine line as you can. Yeah, you're independent, but you're the president of the university and the Chancellor are within they could throw a stone and hit your operation. And I think they do pay the light Bill. Yeah, they do. But you know, at the end of the day, news is new. So you have something that happens you got to break it. You can't just look over it just because it's a universities. So I think that's the mindset we have to have is that no matter what happens, we just want to be fair and biased and treated just like any other story we would cover. So at school of paper now is different than maybe it was a couple of years ago or even a million years ago. When you were there? Well, I was there a billion. But it comes out once a week, is that correct? Yes. We have a weekly paper. And I think twice a month we do a special issue, which is a little different just about whatever topic our most recent one we had won about a homecoming. We had one preview in the basketball season. So just kind of those special. What about online? Is it more regular? Yeah. Every day, every story we were right, it goes up online immediately. Just the print papers come out once a week. But everything else goes up online every day. Well, Josh, again, thank you for having me over there today. I'm sure young students had no interest in listening to what somebody may opine about yesteryear, but it was a delight and really a pleasure to come by and meet you and meet all of your colleagues and you're just a phenomenal group of people. I was so impressed with what I saw and heard and I hope you'll come back offer appreciate that Paul thanks for coming. It was great. Josh lane, the sports editor of the UT daily Beacon joining us here. An old rocky top. We're coming right back. You are listening to the Paul find show podcast. We're back we're live in Knoxville, Laura Rutledge joining us shortly. Great conversation. Our sports editor friend Josh and let's take more phone calls at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 I'm always the last person. John is next in South Carolina. Hey, John. Hello, Paul. How are you? We're great. Thank you. Good. Thanks for taking my call, man. Love your show. Big dog fan down here in Charleston, South Carolina, but it's got to take issue a little something in Tim we're talking about earlier things like week after week, dogs are 9 in that. We're shutting down everybody. We're still not getting credit. We hadn't been tested. So, you know, since we woke up from new touch or not, I mean, Clemson, yeah, Clemson was Clemson. We know how that stand out. So if I could interact with you for one second, you're not getting respect, is that what you said? I mean, I don't know maybe number one team in the country and you're not getting respect. Well, I will know you said earlier we hadn't been tough yet this year. You said we did not the dogs have not been tested. Is it this week we're tested? And then we talk about it Monday. Tell me. Well, let me back up. I thought I thought Clemson was a test at the time. But I would say since Clemson, I can't watch as many games as I can. Maybe I miss one, but it seems like most of them have been pretty much pretty one side. Yeah. Which, by the way, that's not your fault. I mean, that's the fact that you're so good. No, I mean, and it's been a while since we've been like this as dog fans. We've seen 8 and three, 9 and two. For many, many years and I watched TiVo beat up almost every year he was there except for one, which was that, but it seems like each week it's like, oh, Georgia still needs to crib a little something. I don't know. Well, maybe this week. Not that I'm here to offer advice. I wouldn't really care what people say as long as you win. I thought Griffith had a good point. Alabama went through this about 30 years ago that nobody respected them. The entire season only won the national championship. That happens, though, when you're when you're a defensive oriented team I got you. I agree. I agree. But I think this is a different team that the Georgia fans have not seen in many, many years. We've been used to silly penalties and all kinds of other stuff. And I think Kirby's got this team's got their head screwed on right and I think this is the year that we finally get one. Well, 20 years ago, I hate that. Thank you very much, John. Appreciate it. Matt is up next in Texas. Hey, I got right ahead. My brother. I want everybody to go miss game and I got a prediction for you guys to send the gym as well. I'll go over a prediction first. Animal beat on this 45 40 47. That's quite a prediction. And I got one you say to Jim. Jim, my man, miss Cole, you are so much. But a week, the crippled old man, thank you to your show. It's clear to show us past you over because you're too much home to thank you the future. When you're not the future, giving it or a diaper and go work for Fox. You know what? You ain't too bad. Hold on a second. We're Friends, right? The answer is, you let your brother Paul. I mean, is that really a nice thing to say to Jim?.

"The pride passion then pageantry of college football lives here. This is the Paul Fein bomb show hour three podcast. And we're back second half the show live from Knoxville. Yeah, that's smokey there. You see a lot of smokey replicas on the campus of the university of Tennessee, which is where we are. We have made it back to rocky top on homecoming weekend, the dogs are in town and we are here. We've had a great show. We just had Tim Tebow on Josh lane joining us. He's the sports editor of the daily Beacon. And it is a delightful to welcome you Josh. Good afternoon and thanks for being here. Paul, thanks for having me. So excited to be here. Let's talk first about this campus right now. It seems different than any time I have experienced it in a long time. And I want you to tell us from a student perspective, you cover the team at the UT daily Vega in the school newspaper. What's it been like to watch all this unfold and especially to see the excitement for the first time in a long time? Yeah, the word you said describes a perfectly just exciting. I mean, everybody's talking about the football team again. It's always big around here on campus, but now that they finally have a good product or at least better than it was to ask last couple of years, I think everybody just excited about it. Obviously, fast paced often set scores points. That's going to get eyes. It's going to get attention. But I think excitement is just the best word to use everybody's talking about the program now. As a student sports writer, you're obviously you want they're still getting around. This is your school. You want them to do well, but you've also had to cover as the rest of your colleagues. A lot of disasters. What has that been like in the ensuing months leading up to the hiring of Josh hyper and all the other? Within a couple of days, the head coach was gone. The legendary Hall of Fame athletic director who won a national championship was gone. It seemed like everything that could go wrong did. Yeah, it really did. I kind of was lucky that when I first started as an editor, it was at January right when Pruitt was fired and hypo is hired. So the very first thing I did as an editor was we had a special issue come out about that. So that was pretty challenging. I kind of set the tone. It's kind of been more relaxed and kind of the first thing I was doing was writing about everything that happened with Peru and looking into the investigation and all this. And then we hire hypo a couple of days later. So you're writing about hand, you're looking into him. So it was kind of a tough way to start, but you know, here we are now. In terms of that investigation, and I know we don't hear a lot about it. But it is out there and there are some concerns not to dampen the spirit. But whatever happens there could affect recruiting moving forward. What are you hearing? Not much right now. Obviously, a couple of weeks ago, there was the news that Jeremy Peru was calling out some of the coaches. I don't know if that was just made or what I haven't heard much since then about that as far as Rick Barnes and everybody else, they get what's called out. So I assume there wasn't much stalking in that. But it's just in the back of everybody's mind, of course, recently, Tennessee decided not to self impose a bold band. I guess that's kind of the right move considering that they think most of the guilty parties, including in coach and players are gone now. So just doing that kind of protecting the innocent players that are still here. There's still looking into it a little bit, and they have some smaller punishments and the size of maybe the recruiting pullbacks like you mentioned kind of limiting that or limiting scholarships or whatever the case may be. Just kind of those smaller penalties. But I do think it'll have an impact on recruiting. Since they're not doing a bold band, they're going to impose those other panels there in that area. Talking to Josh lane who's a sports editor of the school paper. Josh, let's talk a little bit about your role. Before the season, we had the opportunity to talk to I think we talked to somebody from every different school newspaper leading. And it was so cool. And as you do your job, I know your contact and concert often with others. What is the mood out there among campus reporters, especially in the aftermath of what happened in Oklahoma where you had someone that does what you do, literally break the biggest story of the year by sneaking in, not sneaking, but he legitimately climbed on top of a building or something and looked in and found out what was happening with Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams in Oklahoma. Yeah, I think he's kind of as you mentioned earlier when you came in and spoke with us is that that idea that we don't get much respect. And obviously, you know, you can debate with the other figures that feel like that. But with student journalism, it's always just kind of been behind just behind everything else just because of the fact that we are students. Obviously, we try to be as professional and treated just like any other journalist would be, but at the end of the day, we are students. And even though most other people in the media are very kind and very helpful to us, they're just in the back of everybody's minds. I feel like they think, oh, they're just students. So they're not as important. You know, they're not as credible or whatever the case may be. So to see, and to hear that story, what happened in Oklahoma, students taking the next step in breaking a story before anybody else and doing it in that crazy way. I think it just goes to reinforce that student media student journalism is a big thing and it is legit. It's not just students on the side just doing whatever they want to. It is an actual really can break news just like anybody else. And you mentioned. Earlier, and I want to thank you and your entire group for having me back to a building. I did know how to get there. It was so cool. Not to opine about my own experiences, but to be able to spend a considerable amount of time with you and your colleagues at the school newspaper. And then we had what I thought was a big surprise. We had the Chancellor. Ploughman dropped by and I had never met her before but I felt like I knew her and I told her I said the reason I feel like I know you Chancellor is that she's been on the front and center so often with a machine she's the one that went all in on Jeremy Pruitt. How did that play on this campus? When she did that. I think the mindset with everybody was kind of what you were alluding to earlier was just that it's a nice change because a lot of schools could have just swept this under the rug. It's very minor compared to some of these other scandals and things that happen. So the fact that they brought it out, they brought it to light, they call it. There's some schools that will not even acknowledge that they're under investigation, right? Yeah, that's what he just flat out said. That's guilty. That's what made it so different was the fact that she said that to the public, and then they fired through it immediately. They looked into it and now they've been so open and honest about the whole investigation since they've been working very closely with the NCAA. And I think that's just a nice change from what you normally hear about administration and kind of involved in interfered with the athletic program. Let me wrap up here in a second, Josh talking about what you're doing. And I will, for those who have never been in a position, I mean, you are in such a unique position. You're at this great university with football what it is. You got Georgia here this weekend. How do you approach your job knowing that there are a lot of young people who are reading you keeping up with you, however they are and not let all that affect what.

Because <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> you get a whole <Speech_Male> lot of information <Speech_Male> that not <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> it you know <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> Not look at <Speech_Male> what happened <Speech_Male> last <Speech_Male> year in <Speech_Male> house <Speech_Music_Male> is a real <Speech_Music_Male> slow rollout <Speech_Music_Male> for <Speech_Male> football <Speech_Male> College <Speech_Male> football even <Speech_Male> start. <Speech_Male> You know. I didn't <Speech_Male> even know how <Speech_Male> many games are <Speech_Male> going to be getting played <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> and it starts <Speech_Music_Male> scare me now <Speech_Male> because <Speech_Male> you know <Speech_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> The fearmongering <Speech_Male> behind it <Speech_Male> is <Speech_Male> is starting to <Speech_Music_Male> make new worries <Speech_Male> it <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> With <Speech_Music_Male> which how <Speech_Male> many people they're going <Speech_Music_Male> to allow him <Speech_Male> to the stadiums <Speech_Male> and all <Speech_Music_Male> that you know right <Speech_Music_Male> now it looks <Speech_Male> good but <Speech_Male> the more <Speech_Male> the media <Speech_Male> pushes <Speech_Male> it and <Speech_Music_Male> all that <Speech_Music_Male> i'm afraid <Speech_Music_Male> to. <Speech_Music_Male> I'm afraid they might <Speech_Music_Male> start rolling back. <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> You know <Speech_Male> why do <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> i have. I <Speech_Male> have some <Speech_Male> friends who <Speech_Male> who feel the same <Speech_Male> way they keep <Speech_Male> telling me. You <Speech_Male> don't really think <Speech_Male> you're going to be out <Speech_Male> there traveling this fall <Speech_Male> and i said yes i do. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> And they're they're they're <Speech_Male> they're in similar <Speech_Male> fields to <Speech_Male> you and <Speech_Male> i <Speech_Male> respect that very very <Speech_Male> much. <Speech_Male> I never <Speech_Male> last <Speech_Male> year was a little bit different <Speech_Male> last year. None <Speech_Male> of us knew what we were. We <Speech_Male> were getting into <Speech_Male> do now. <Speech_Male> You have <SpeakerChange> a lot of experienced <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> a new <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> you know. <Speech_Male> Yeah and. <Speech_Male> I don't think we're <Speech_Male> a year ago today. <Speech_Male> We were still <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> were still wondering <Speech_Male> what the next couple <Speech_Male> of weeks would look like. <Speech_Male> We're not really wondering <Speech_Male> anymore. <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> say we aren't <Speech_Male> Those of us. Who <Speech_Male> do this show. But i know <Speech_Male> you are and <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> it's a it's a. <Speech_Male> It is a very <Speech_Male> dangerous situation <Speech_Male> out there. And <Speech_Male> i know that sometimes <Speech_Male> because you <Speech_Male> have a caller who <Speech_Male> who propagates <Speech_Male> one theory. <Speech_Male> It means <Speech_Male> that you are <SpeakerChange> necessarily <Speech_Male> endorsing it. I'm <Speech_Male> not <Speech_Male> i <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> people say why. Why would <Speech_Male> you even let that person. <Speech_Male> On my my. <Speech_Male> My feeling is to let people <Speech_Male> talk <Speech_Male> and let everyone <Speech_Male> else decide for <Speech_Male> themselves <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> right. <Speech_Male> And i and i appreciate <Speech_Music_Male> that. He's you <Speech_Music_Male> know there. There's <Speech_Male> a lot of opinions <Speech_Music_Male> out there. Not <Speech_Music_Male> everybody has <Speech_Male> a <Speech_Male> The experience <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> and and <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Then <hes> the <Speech_Male> the knowledge <Speech_Male> upon lachey or <Speech_Male> here in things <Speech_Music_Male> on facebook <Speech_Male> groups or <Speech_Male> from friends and <Speech_Male> family <Speech_Male> and they don't <Speech_Male> really know <Speech_Male> though you know that <Speech_Music_Male> <hes> earlier. <Speech_Music_Male> Wow if seventy <Speech_Music_Male> five percent chance <Speech_Music_Male> it's going to happen <Speech_Male> on a <Speech_Male> where he pulled at <Speech_Male> number of it but <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> is not <SpeakerChange> how. <Speech_Music_Male> How <Speech_Music_Male> look i think <Speech_Male> you better than i <Speech_Male> do. The biggest concern <Speech_Male> that i hear from <Speech_Male> healthcare workers <Speech_Male> And you are. One <Speech_Male> is <Speech_Male> the icu situation. <Speech_Male> Because that goes <Speech_Male> it that goes haywire. <Speech_Male> The healthcare <Speech_Male> system shuts <Speech_Male> down. And we're <SpeakerChange> all in a lot <Speech_Male> of trouble <Speech_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> And that's all take <Speech_Music_Male> that <Speech_Music_Male> one hot spot <Speech_Male> for <Speech_Male> it <Speech_Male> Blow out and they've <Speech_Male> seen no. <SpeakerChange> He has <Speech_Male> <hes> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> The college <Speech_Music_Male> sports <Speech_Male> the

"Some today. we're back We still have forty five minutes to go. let's get some more calls in your anthony in louisiana. Hello anthony. hey how you doing. We're doing great. Thank you Good a look. Yeah i wanted to just put a little input about texas and oklahoma if you can hear me Tetris think is not going to do that. Well in scc. I think oklahoma. They'll come in and compete. You know just some opinion. what you'd think. Well i think. I think oklahoma will will slip in here very quickly and do quite well. I think ultimately texas will do what we'll do better but texas has to up its recruiting to the level of alabama oklahoma. I mean they're not that far away they just they just need to go up in class and i think ultimately they will to me without this texas who is going to continue to be mired in mediocrity but but i think the sec could potentially give them the shot in the arm that that's necessarily. Hey thanks for the call appreciate it. Jim georgia. You're on the air. Hello jim hey paul how you doing jim. We're doing great thank you man. Thanks for taking my call. A longtime viewer first-time caller. I'm glad to hear from you had a caller earlier. Speaking by georgian clinton playing we used to play all the time and hasn't great gangs back in the day. Some that i go along with long field though. If you wanna be you as a fable man pull up that Larry month and rex things kicking the ball. I remember that jeff. Kevin butler wasn't it. Well kevin butler kicked one that ranked bras the cape extra mile. Forgot that well. Yeah i mean the robbery is fantastic. And i think everyone is. I mean. forget the fact that it's one of the two of the top teams in the country but This game really ought to be back on campus. There's no hope. I hope it will be soon some is up next Go right ahead life. You're on the air. Hey miss a finebaum First time caller man Just so excited. I got a chance to come in with you. Well thank you. Just two things i wanted to say. I'm just so excited. I don't know really what to talk about. But i think we're going to Bama full-time bama fan me and my wife live here. Nor ford I think to our trouble games is gonna be ole miss and texas. All the almost game is at home. Now let's should help a little bit but you're right almost is going to be a threat to everyone this year. It's just a matter whether their defense can shore up and and quite frankly the game is circled There's not an aggie fan in the world. It's not thinking about that that afternoon. yes sir. Hey look here man. I'm just so excited to get your voice on the phone. And i watch your show every single day me and my wife and we are die hard alabama fan well license. I really appreciate your your calling. In and i hope you'll do it again and you guys Just hang in there and we can't wait for the season to get started here in a couple of days. Absolutely man have a grey week. Thank you appreciate it There was a pleasure to talk to you. Let's continue with more. Phone calls. And chris is up next in arkansas. Hi chris we're doing great. Thank you i met my question for. You aren't lsu But my question for utah coach saving. What does he do differently than than other coaches do football How does he keep winning year. In and year out with new coaches every year. What does he do differently. Well i think there are couple of things because you're right it. His his staff is always in upheaval. Because of success you know he is a a detail process oriented coach. What does that mean. That means that everything is planned out plotted down to the second. And i think the one thing he does not get credit for is his evaluation skills. He makes mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes in any sport but he makes very few and the reason why he makes so few as he is a student of the game. He's he he. He never stops looking at film he never stops evaluating and then he makes good decisions and you know again. You can afford to make better decisions when you have. The the field of players to choose from alabama does but you don't want to He i think he tries to avoid discipline issues which will upset and perhaps poison his team and i think ultimately success builds on top success but but he has always said. His success is coming prime primarily from the process. He hasn't laid out he doesn't deviate and then the execution comes after that. Right right well. I appreciate apollo more fine. How do you think. Lsu's going to do this year With i know there's big talk so going back to the toy nineteen year which is as we all know. There's a long shot vallis you family like to see. How do you think they're going to stack up in the sec. Quite well i'm pretty high on lsu. And i mean the first game makes me a little uncomfortable because you for this reason. Ucla we'll have one game under their belt. And that's that is a tremendous advantage in college football because so few teams get that job because we don't you know week zero is is not something we do very much with major games. Ucla hawaii this week. I'm really interested in that game. But other than that i think. Lsu has a really good chance of a big year. if i looked at the schedule Which we are looking at. I think as a little tricky just because of where it sits. I just notice a kentucky game. You can't go to kentucky without expecting difficulty. Florida at home is a real advantage. I mean all misses a little troublesome to on the road and alabama. I look at. I look at lsu schedule. I like the fact that am is at home but they have some sneaky. Tricky games on the road which which made me a little bit concern but having having talked myself into the concern. I'm going to talk myself out of it. As long as max johnson stays healthy. I think they have a really good chance of contending if he if he goes down. It's over There's there's no like there's no turning around thanks for the call to sheet it. Hairy in louisville is up. Next harry pile. We're doing great thank you. I wanted to talk to you about the kind football. That's what i wanna talk to you about. Of course like the idea. I don't like to add their Princeton clemson they don't play by the boss. Let me being the playoff every year. Because they don't play but now eight on your home is in there without me. Alabama might not even come out normal. You know what i'm saying. Well you're you're you're right And the one thing about clemson you have to give them credit for their record against the big teams are is fantastic. Especially the sec. But there are some theories about. Why are they so successful in these big games and you just laid it out. They play a pathetically easy schedule. They don't incur as many injuries as other schools. Do because of the competition and they skate I'm thinking about clemson's losses over the years. They've had a couple of Inexplicable losses like to syracuse or or pittsburgh. But but i mean this year i mean. Let's let's move the georgia game aside because we all know about that. South carolina state georgia tech at nc state. I mean that's a tough game in the acc. Boston college terrible..

"We all know that What's it feel like. And how much different is it even with. Covert concerns rising around the country. Yeah think everybody's excited to be back on campus now. Football back tennessee I would say everyone is still kind of skipped skeptic about tennessee. We got the new coach. But i don't think everyone jumping on the bandwagon yet. I think you know with the history. That's innoc- has. They're all kind of reserved as far as that. But everybody's excited to be back. They're excited to hasselbald meena neilan capacity again. It's it's hundredth year of the stadium. So everyone's excited about that. But i think they're still hold off from declaring tendency the national championship point the joshua final. Tell you mentioned pruitt earlier. And i know that's the topic nobody really wants to go to but It ended in an absolute disaster. Then we had the school chancellor and and the president coming out and throwing him under the bus. We're still trying to figure it. Phil fulmer leaves in in a matter of days. We're still trying to figure out really what's going to happen on that front. I realized nobody is saying anything. But what are you. What are you pick up around campus. What's a how big of a concern is that Impending investigation or the current impact the investigation. That's currently going on. Yeah it's a bit of an odd situation because as you mentioned no one really talks about it. It's something i think this kind of on the back of everybody's mind like well you know. Maybe if we're actually good night somehow you know. Make the playoffs or ballgame or something like that you know they might revoke it because you never know what the punishment is going to be. There's always the thought. That tennessee could impose a punishment on itself So but you know they don't really announce much as far as that goes you know. They don't let the media in and all that so. There's still some questions. Some some drawbacks there because nobody really knows But that's just that's just kinda how it is with these investigations. You know you ask the coach although give you as you know we're cooperating. We're doing our part and you don't get much more to go off the net. So i think that's just kind of something that's on the back of everybody's mind where you know we're not to worry about it now but maybe towards the end of the year could ask consequences on tennessee josh. Let's talk about you for a second before we go. You're in a coveted position. A lot of folks would like to be the sports editor of the school paper in a place like knoxville. What you're back to ask you what your back story. You're a college student. So there's but where you from. And what are your. What are your thoughts. Moving forward as You you tackle this job. Yeah i'm from From lewisville tennessee is just right outside knoxville. In here in this area my whole life. And so i'm pretty excited to be here at the daily beacon. Get this opportunity to be pretty cool things Cover tennessee sports. You know hopefully I'll be have a career that continues in sports journalism. That's what i wanna do this. What i love But yeah the beacons been great. I've had nothing but great experiences so far last year. It's kind of weird with kobe. Didn't everything's online but happy to be back in person. Even though you know. I'm like four days into it at this point but it's it's been nothing but great so far all the best. Thanks for making time. We hope to see if we Come that direction And maybe you could give us old some old timers a tour of the school newspaper and see if it's still there. Thank you very much. What applies pleasure to To have josh lewin And that is something that we are going to try to do as much as possible. We've done it three times. And i will continue to do it As we work our way through this week. And as i mentioned a couple of hours ago when we go on campuses We really do like Talking to the cat. I'll never forget. It was two maybe three years ago when the most memorable moments. I think we've ever had on a friday as we had The editor of the sports editor and in another editor of the daily beacon. We were up there at Areas hall and it was just amazing Amazing time just reflecting back on the year is and and talking about these young people in the prime of their life As they get ready to tackle the the end of their college career. And what's ahead for them. We'll take a break more of your phone calls right.

"Young student. Well speaks for itself student. Reporters and editors on college campuses as we go back to school this week. We've been a couple of places in our final stop. This afternoon is in knoxville. And we're joined by josh lane. Who is the sports editor the. Ut daily beacon. Josh thanks so much for being with us Congratulations on that position. And how are you get ready for a fall in knoxville tennessee. Yep all thanks for having me. I'm doing pretty well. We just started back on classes wednesday At a couple you know daily beacon meetings last couple days so we're getting back into the swing of things. It's been fun so far. I'm to let's talk about what's going on At practice and what we know sometimes coaches are helpful. And sometimes they make you guess. The quarterback situation seems to be where we're all is rn. Now in josh. Polls i i Fall what does it look like to you. Yeah we'll so far hypo has been playing cards close to his chest. He is not been willing to give starter yet I kind of the feeling that you know within the program. They've got their deaths chart made out and maybe they've got the top guy but they're not announcing that you get just you know it's hard to imagine that ten days before the first game. They're still undecided but they haven't released anything to the public yet So far i would say joe. Milton is probably been the guy that stood out as far as his size and athleticism. Strong arm that he has. But i've josh typos. Been you know not really willing to name starter yet. So let's let's kinda everybody's waiting on right now. Now coaches are always different about that Considering the opponent is for the first game. I doubt this is just a opinion. It really will make any difference but you guessed it hypo is just type of coach. Doesn't want to give anything away. Or maybe he really doesn't know hard to believe that though. Yeah that's what. I was thinking. I think he's just a coach it doesn't want to give it away on some of his You know assistance to defend coronations. All they've talked about that You know not wanna give away their base defense and also. I think this is kind of a a trait within the coaching staff. But you mentioned their first opponent bowling green. I don't think they're. I think they're gonna be full green regardless of if they have a couple of days for indices quarterback or not so. I think it's just something. That's within hypol- coaching staff this. This willingness to keep keep all the cards Their chest get every advantage that they can trash. Let's talk about this team because it's old news now that so many great players departed L. for elsewhere. I mean we're talking about some of the stalwarts of the last couple of years in knoxville. But how do you think it's gone without having seen him coach game yet other than in the spring. But how do think. It's gone so far for josh apple. Well so far quarterback thing. I would say so far so good for josh hypo At least within the program within the players right The kind of the mentality that some of the players had that they were talking about under jeremy pruitt there at the end was how much of a chore was coming in the practice. It felt like going into work on monday mornings and so far the know. The players had great reviews for josh hypol- In the vibes the culture that they're getting they're in the program. It's a been radically different. So i think everybody loves playing for him. I think he makes it fun. I think he's still. He's still saying disciplined in teaching. But he's got that balanced to where they enjoy it. They love coming in and playing football form. It seems like a certain narratives have have been formulated in one well. Tennessee may not win a lot this year. But it's going to be much more exciting to watch. I know that won't satisfy fans for a long time. But is that a fair description of what we're about to get into. Yeah i i think that's fair because obviously with hypo the thing brings that offense. And that's something that tennessee Been well documented in lacking. So you know just bringing that offense no having some quarterback competition and maybe a starter whenever they name it that you know might play the entire year and might be pretty good. I think that's something that You know something. That fans are excited for now whether not that means. He wins eight games this year. I don't think that's going to happen. I think it's still a work in progress. It's just hypospadias here. So give him time. But i do think that we're going to start seeing that progression in it might even start with you. Know a big. Big offense. Invite next thursday Against bowling green as you look at the schedule. There's certainly some flashpoint games and a lot of colleagues that we talked to here have pointed toward pittsburgh as being a really important game. They're all important. Let's not get caught up in cliches but because it's a good opponent. It's not a great opponents. Alex starting against clemson but pittsburgh is a known team because it really gets difficult after the tennessee tech game. It's at florida at missouri Those look promising sites south carolina probably and then the ole miss alabama kentucky georgia gauntlet. How do you evaluate what what these first couple of games could mean ultimately for the vol's yeah. They're going to be real important for tennessee. Because i mean you mentioned that you got it up there it gets it gets real god thing to the end so you know. Take advantage of bowling green pittsburgh tennessee tech. You know some of these teams. That should be easier. Now you mentioned pittsburgh can be pretty good and you know they're celebrating the johnny majors thing there so you know there might be extra emotion sarah from pitt. But you've got to take advantage of these teams that you think tennessee's got a chance to be that you can't let anything happen a couple years ago when georgia state comes back You can't let anything like that happened. So take advantage of these. You know these first couple of teams because as you mentioned. It's going to get real tough to win games for tennessee there at the end. So you know record. The winds while talking to josh lanes is sports editor of the ut daily bacon. Josh let's just talk about the the attitude. The mood on campus. Were about to see football in just under under two weeks now. The first game on thursday night last year was it was a mess..
