"Think Andy Reid Mike homer bell lost at the Ben. Lyons coaching trae. Josh Horwitz. I know because if ben lines he's a terrific guy. Josh correspond for MTV news where he's been leading their film covers since two thousand and six. He's also got great podcasts. Happy sad confused and has been told as recently as a guest on sinophile. The festival rules that you should all listen to. I listened to the Julia Louis Dreyfuss interview Alec Baldwin Very Funny Great Stuff from paramount. Josh's many roles as well in addition was working. Mtv and of course he's got so many stories but seemingly everybody in Hollywood. Thanks so much for the time today. Josh how we doing I'm doing well. I just realized I've nothing. But an appendage Ben Wyan so sad but I'm gonNA stand having to damage. It's good to talk to you exactly. It's like when the student over comes the mentor. Not that bad your mentor. Because I'm darker later to his emperor. You listen I'm so happy you in both got to be at the Oscars obviously a triumphal moment for parasite It's great for for four and Cinema Cinema. It's for anybody. Who loves different movies? It's such an audacious film. Of course I loved the Irishman. So I'm still smarting from the fact that went over ten but I expected to because on my ballot I realized it was not gonNA come through. But I'll give me a sense of what it was like being there and seeing parasite win. Yeah look being on the red carpet as you. Well know it. There's nothing like the Oscars I mean. I've been privileged enough to do it. A bunch of times over the years but as jaded as you get. When you're there you're like this is this is still mystery. This truly is and to be there On a night one. Yeah like there was a legitimate great surprise. I'll confess like many like I was predicting nineteen seventeen to win and Mendis to win best director. It kinda ruined my Oscar ballot at the end but I was thrilled that Bongino on that parasite one that it made history as the first South Korean foreign film to Win Best Picture. I mean you could feel the energy even on the carpet. I smoked a Bong Jun ho and he was like arguably on the award circuit this year. I think the two superstars were Brad Pitt. And Bong joon-ho those two guys. Everybody wanted to talk to and I was thrilled to get to finally meet him on that night on the carpet just a couple hours before he to come all those awards It was amazing. It was awesome. Yeah and he's such an endearing guy. I mean his speech when you on best director is you and I both know there can be a Lotta pretentious people in Hollywood and you know fake acts and stuff. There's nothing false about that guide. All he's one hundred percents here when he says he was not expecting to win. He means that with his heart and his speech about this. He didn't think anybody but the other nominees. I always love when people for the I got to do is say. Hey I want to congratulate weather nominees. I think if you're a really good person you actually specifically mentioned by name and mentioned the rule which Joaquin Phoenix Day believe at the SAG but budget entire speech. He just praised Marty. Cutie mentioned Mendis and todd. I'm going to go drink until next morning. Like what a great speech. I mean the fact that yeah I mean. Look I think we all knew. Even you with your your Irishman phrase and I loved Irishman or just as much as you We knew it wasn't going to be the night for that. But the fact that he singled out Mardi as like the you know the standard bearer for everybody in that room mental Wa. I mean I I. I think you know my whether you're actually was once upon a time in Hollywood I love Tarintino that being said that guy like does himself no favors when he does speeches like He. He's so competitor. You know you you cut to him when he loses. He looks miserable when he wins. He's not gracious in the right. Way Bonding Right. Where Tarantino probably would have done that. That is a great point. You bring up Josh. Because I'm watching the Oscars and they've got a couple tweets. Hey Jesse Mendez reactions. I immediately ran the cover. So you'RE RIGHT MARTY LOOKED TIRED. Tarantino looked pissed mendis give like wow wasn't expecting every Damn Award. I lose to this guy. You're kidding Todd Phillips and I think it's probably the jerk of them because I can't do comedy now because awoke culture. I probably liked him the lease he was the most gracious by giving a slight smile. So you're right you've got to be better in the moment and when Tarantino Spe- one of the globe he was like listen. I mean there's only two thank I did it myself like this guy is terrible being gracious terrible. The worst that being said maybe my favorite filmmaker to live. I don't making speechmaking to also these obviously a great show Baker. Nobody can deny that. Obviously the officers were ton of fun. But I love listening to you and Ben There at Sundance. Because you guys just having been there once with you guys you just you cram in three movies a day and you just firing through his best as you can. There's obviously so many movies. That people are talking about the Sandra moving particularly praises because the fact. Obviously that's big time money frame to be able to break a record in terms of What was able to generate for the sale? But we're movies the for you. That stood out. Ben gave us a bunch them and particularly the one. I think the Miller movie. He was weeping during an. You're cradling him the entire time I was I was watching the tears streaming down his face throughout those hundred minutes and then we did the interview right afterwards. Filmmaker remarkable but I was definitely moved by wandered. Play not as much as then. But it's it's a fine film lovers another great performance My you know yes. Predictably Palm Springs when I saw was just the perfect antidote to everything you see at Sundance. You know you've been down to you know that a lot of the stuff. There is pretty dark and brooding and palm springs is legitimate like Great comedy maybe the best use of Andy Sandberg the side of Pop Star And I think it's GonNa do well. You never know that Sundance bubbled. That in it can be a little bit confusing. See like what actually is going to resonate in the real world but that was probably my favorite film of the festival him and Kristen. I don't want to say too much. I think the marketing we'll tell you what the concept of the film is but at the high concept comedy that is very very funny The other ones that really broke out to me. I really liked promising young woman. Which is the new Carey Mulligan film? That's opening actually just a couple of months it already had this revolution It's kind of a revenge story about a woman who is pretending to be taken advantage of by men in clubs and kind of inaction this kind of really nefarious scheme on them It kind of reminded me way back when of like to die for kind of a sharp black comedy Carey. Mulligan is a maze in it. Burnham's Excellent Really Nice Ensemble of supporting cast in that one I really liked voice state on the dockside which got a big acquisition apples. I'm remembering correctly Boy State is this talk about every year. The American Legion Basically takes a week out of the year for young men and women to create their own government and they followed the boy side of it for this week in Texas and watch them Kinda go through the motions of elected leaders and in doing so you kind of see what they do. As kind of a microcosm of what we're all experiencing the divisiveness of politics all look the good the bad and the ugly. That's going on in politics today And it's a it's a really well then DOPP that has resonance today Yeah actually saw good movies at Sundance. This year I've done many years where I'd just like through the luck of the draw not seen anything of this year a half dozen movies. That were great. Yeah I completely agree. I mean just that one experience ahead. You're right you can go from like just a giant film that you love your embrace you WanNa give him a big hug to something else you go. What the Hell is this like? This is the people that hated independent. That's exactly the kind of claptrap laugh to sit through. I was sitting over from during a third to bother you so I haven't come back with visit my illness. Keith. Stanfield that drove me away forever. You can always follow. Josh on. Twitter is really funny. Always you're taking Joshua Horowitz's where you can find me in a tweet a few days ago which struck me personally because I love this guy to you tweeted. I missed Philip Seymour. Hop in an all time great. This thought comes to mind about once a month. The the gift he says I do many many things Which is from the master. Now I was GONNA say he's one of those that I don't even know if I was watching any of his films are really just a random thought but The fact that like you know you take me you. Just throw a dart at aboard and at any opposed Hoffmann's roles and they were all so different from each other and they were also unique and he was what is early forties and I think maybe I thought about it because I think he passed away right after sundown one year And a Heath. Ledger died during Sundance. When you're horrible anniversary But to think of like the way he was able to balance leading man role in Capote. He won the Oscar but even just supporting turns like from from silly comedies. Like a poly to like bad guys in mission impossible three. He can do everything so it's just about that walked that it really upsets me. From time to time I agree that just his rangers amazing. My wife has always mystifies it? What do you love it? What do you love them so much? I mean he's GonNa Act you. Don't look at him and think that's a leading mail like this has not going to start. That's pure talent night that guys show talented. It must have worked so hard right. He does not have what Tom Cruise Hazard. Denzel ring that stuff but like he does in his own way because he was so charismatic. Just an atypical manner. Yeah I remember seeing for the first funding sensible woman and thinking guys like the smarmy jerk. I can't stand this guy actually. I think that's hated the character and then over the years it was like a weight. That's just like an extreme talent that he has can go to these. Bizarre ends of the spectrum Yeah he was about so good. Also are the best Julia Louis Dreyfuss you have a great relationship with like I said I listened to the festival. Rose podcast you gave a disclaimer. Your wife is involved with the company or the corporation of the 'CAUSE WE Louis is involved with as well so I mean I certainly me that helps a little bit with familiarity but talk about somebody who is incredibly talented and seems very warm and gracious as well. Tell me a little bit about your relationship with her. Why you such a fan of this movie downhill she's made with will Farrell look like anybody I grew up? You know my age I grew up with for a you know watching on Seinfeld. So of course had great admiration for her and then through deep which is arguably one of I think the best comedy Zimbalist twenty years not all time yeah what my wife works for the Natural Resources Defense Council which environmental group that Julia is on the board of directors for its kind for her pet. 'cause that she's really passionate for And so I don to know her on both sides which has been really great through my wife and and for humanitarian where but also I did a series for MTV Where do kind of like long-form Conversations called personal space where I did a long interview with her for the end of the And then I've since then caught up with her a couple of times including at Sundance and He's he's just like my femur like I love. I love the combination of her and will in downhill. It's not my favorite friendlier. It doesn't work on all levels but their chemistry works there. Awkward Relationship Works for those. That don't know it's a a remake of a great foreign called force majeure that's basically about a family tested in this bizarre circumstance when like an avalanche is triggered and the the wife and the family of the MOM and the family protects the kids when the avalanche is coming and the dad basically grabs the phone and runs So it's kind of a and that kind of sets off a spiral of of Implications about how solid this family is The stuff between them. The film is Great. I didn't love is frankly the the broader stuff in the film decide characters whenever it focuses on Julia and will all in Those two are from my money. You just like the most neatly funny human beings on the planet actually ran into will on the flight back from the Oscars on the flight. So was thrilled to run into him too. They're also just two of the nicest human beings on the planet there. You couldn't ask for better people so that's awesome. It's always nice when you star power with that mixed with genuine. Human KINDNESS MEAN. It's unmatchable unmatchable combination paramount network..

"Jason reitman. And my office is approximate what you know of Josh Horowitz over the years feel right? Honestly. I didn't know quite what to expect. I honestly if if there's a ten different versions of your office that would have been like make sense. But is this one of the better possible possibilities in your mind? Definitely look I mean, if there was going to be three posters behind you. And I'm going to read them off you got color money back to the future in big trouble little China. And that's great trio. I'm not gonna knock that loan color money. Underrated score says hundred percent underrated. It's fantastic movie. If that movie is on I'll say this if goodfellas on I may not watch it. It's an it's an undertaking. You're in. Goodfellas? It's obviously brilliant. If it's on though, I'm not I don't feel the need if color money's on. I agree. I don't care if it's three thirty AM. I'm going to be up till five thirty. I'm watching that movie. Newman's amazing. They're all mazing. They are all Mary, Louise master Antonio, so amazing and one of the best time crews performances, and it breaks your heart with Newman and the shooting gorgeous end the handling of the midwest and the snowy streets in the mud and pool halls and the. Killer ending is clearly my favorite kind of ending ending before the ending Athens credits freely. Future. What more is there to say? I mean, perhaps talk five screenplays ever written. Just an absolute gorgeous movie with like the economy of storytelling. You know, the maze of about juries started. You might have his model. This is how little Christopher Lloyd is in it. Right. Doc Brown went duck proud and Marnie MC fly say goodbye to each other. Then it is absolutely heartbreaking. And you'd think they just spent ten years on the castaway island. They met each other like three times in real like in as far as like the movies life goes they've they've had so few scenes he literally like shows up confused. Hello. How are you sleep to the house? He goes to the school comes back shows the model, and then they're like off and like, that's it. Well, it's probably as economical in that like that performance. And that character is so big and like as much as I love the sequels. There's more of doc in the sequels and the kind of bigger and broader. Yeah, it it's it's have you ever heard the original. What was the log line like what gave Bob gale the idea? No tillman. The idea was what if you met your father on high school? Would you guys be friends you've heard? Yeah. Brilliant amazing. And it's kind of it's speaks to. Everything I think about -veloping in that same father used to say ever told you my father, the this story about my father, showing me the show twenty four no Kiefer Sutherland show. So Hyundai mmg is me call and he says you got to come over and watch twenty four like now, the Al like now all of these little. Little getaway car go to my dad's house, and he's got like a movie theater in his house. And we turned it on. And we watch for episodes twenty four hours of twenty four. Okay. And it's greatly. If you watched it. Yeah, it's can shop, and it was a great show. And and he loved it. And I said why is it so good is this so many shows about terrorism wisest show, so good? My dad goes isn't a show about terrorism this show about a man trying to keep his family together. And it's like any said don't confuse your location for your plot. I love it. And it was it was so important, and it's perfect on thing. It's all the bells and whistles that make it fun apart stories, actually. Yeah. The reason that one is a classic and the other two are good fun movies is what you're talking about time. Travel is a location, right. What if you met your father on high school? Would you be friends that is the movie is about and the great movies know that difference strikes me when you give me that log line go full circle this year on Tali? That's a little bit of like, how are we gonna talk about my movies? I couldn't help not here to do. We'll come back to Vic trouble in little China. All right. So. Embarrassing story..
