"Mean, Terry will be working together on figuring out strategically we're going to do everything in our power. All right, as a program to give our guys a chance to do that, and I truly believe we will be in the final four and in a short period of time, he's back here. Zach Gilbert. It is exact help show right here on CBS Sports Radio that was just smells on the new head football coach at U. C. F. That will take some time to adjust and adapt to seeing him on the sideline with the visor and no longer read Auburn as now, Brian Horse in who moves over from Boise State to Aubert is the head football coach at all. Burn And you do end up with Gus Bells on it. You see, by the way This is another thing that I just thought of, and we'll get to the topic of college football playoff expansion in just a bit. Who do you think made the best hire out of these three schools. Was a Tennessee with Josh Heiple. Was at Auburn with Brian Carson. Or was it Gus Malzahn? With UCF. Would personally say it's Gus Malzahn with UCF Now that does not mean that the Brian Horse and higher can't be successful at all. Burn. That does not mean that the Josh Heiple higher Can't be successful at Tennessee. But the best coach out of the three Is that all burn? And I don't know about you trace. It all burned, really upgrade with Brian Harston. And I would ask the same thing of Tennessee. Couldn't you make the case? That you see offended up with a better coach than the coach that they just previously had. I think the Golden Knights do you see have golden knights of the biggest winner here, don't you? 100% with you. Like us As a coach, I thought was a big mistake for Auburn a fire in the first place realistic expectations from those fans and that's that's why you feel bad for Brian harshly because they don't really know how good they have it. And I'm not even saying Brian Horsing is a bad football coach. I'm not. I think he's a good football coach. When you get rid of Gus Malzahn, and you're paying that coach $2022 million to not coach the team to not do your job. Gus Bells on took a five year contract for 11.5 million because of how much money and I know that UCF is gonna pay as much as other schools, but how much money he's Making stole from Auburn had to play a factor in that. He's tight with the A D, going back to the year they shared together at Arkansas State when you hire Brian Whoreson. And you get rid of a coach of the caliber of dust balls on who's not this great coach. I'm not gonna say he's great, but he's very good. He was actually able to beat Alabama few times. You have this big juggernaut in your conference in Alabama. That basically makes it impossible and the SEC I'm sure Georgia fans are gonna start to get tired of Kirby Smart, who was just in the national championship game a few years ago. Now. Since then, he had that big epic blunder. I still can't believe that fake punt and the SEC title game against Alabama but really The higher Brian Whoreson was underwhelming when you Get rid of the guy of the caliber of Gus Malzahn. And we hear we heard some things you know, just through various reports and whatnot. I guess they were trying to target marry a crystal ball. And they didn't end up getting him. Then the steel higher, never ended up happening, which often fans clearly wanted to stop. So That whole triangle. Where you see that Tennessee gets Heiple. And Auburn. That's horse in And UCF gets Gus Malzahn. It's It's kind of amazing to me, Ryan That the smaller school the power six school as they like to call themselves. And even as an American athletic conference along my guests, because I did go to a school in the American Athletic Conference of You may have heard of bills into the show. Temple University T for Temple. You The smaller school ended up winning here with the caliber of coach that they got. You think Gus Malzahn Don't want to say that. You know what Oscar's way? Is this? His final stop. If he if he kills it at UCF. Would he go back to let's Because Auburn is a huge SEC job? Would he go back to maybe one of those smaller SEC jobs just because it's in The power five. Don't so for categorizing smaller as let's just say, Kentucky or South Carolina, for example, like a Vanderbilt, I would say no, but I think he'll have a lot of success, where he will be able to parlay that into A big time like as we've seen, it doesn't take a lot for these schools to quantify their head coach is eventually Now your only real crazy eventually Alabama's gonna become open. Sooner rather later, maybe we'll see. Maybe he sits on that If you have success, you see if he could. Basically every single year hand picked one of the best jobs he wants. Have not go back. And when 10 or 11 games, UCF no problem. Well, how long is he there For? That very question. What happens? Let's just say A year or two. From now, Clay Helton is out. At USC. If you're Gus Malzahn, and they offered you that job, Are you turning it down? State. U C F I don't care how much you like D A D. Can you imagine on your resume? You have all burn and then also USC. Remember? That spells on not an old man. He's 55..

I actually try to make ribbed for the first time ever this year when it came out because I've never tried it before, but it's always such a big crazy. That's a big deal for function. So I just drove it. It's all right. Okay. It's fine. Yeah, Yeah, a lot of lot. If you don't like onions, you're probably they put a lot of onions on it. If I'm going for barbecue, That's not where I'm going. So that's true. Smokehouse is right up the road. Exactly. So you just turn out Atlanta highway and it's You know, it's right up there. But by the way, you know, he did finish seventh out of the field of 44. So I'm thinking maybe if he If he'd foregone the the this Sunday Maybe we've been a little lighter. He could Maybe maybe six or 766 or fifth position, you know, been lighter but up up up to I'm loving it. I love that. That's fantastic. Hey, guys, I'm going to take your what? Would've been better for taking his NASCAR be taking his race car That would have been perfect. All right, 26 minutes after seven and Wdun, you're looking for a race card? Probably not. But you are looking for great transportation and you want to be able to afford it. You don't have to pay a race car prices. It costs a lot to fund a racing team. "Is relatively Minuscule. It's more topic driven, controversial, driven the Astros cheating steroids that true it's a regional sport. Also, it's a great regional support. No, we know that it's It's long ago Morse for America's pastime into a great regional sport, but how many sports and I'm really looking at the MBA and the nd an MBA in the NFL. How many teams can be as good as the Utah Jazz are in either of those two leagues and not get any national run? Like, Think about it even no, no, no, like it wouldn't happen in football because it's market or relevant. And the NBA, for the most part is market irrelevant, But there's something about Utah That people that's a great point. You don't like it. Just tell me what's the worst. What's the smallest market in the NFL? Whoever it is small this, whoever, Whoever I think it was May may have been a May have been Oakland. Yes, Markets Jacksonville Jack sounds about right, So let's say pretty small market right? But But Buffalo's got like a history, but I'm just saying market size true, but it is a smaller market that hasn't had success. Um, you know, you look at you look at Buffalo. Let's say, Let's say it's Jacksonville on that's not Green Bay because green Baize I mean, so their legendary I'm talking about, like a non plus very encompasses several states really true, a non legendary team and with it has, you know, Okay, fandom and whatever. And they're they're 11 and oh, You know what I mean? That's not saying we're paying attention, 100%, and we're not doing that with the Utah Jazz, and it's a shame. No, nobody is, which is why we wanted to leave this in there. They're a great story there. Admittedly a little tough for me to diagnose. You know, I watch him play. And it's just this. Is this what this would drive me crazy about me? I three years like I've defended the Denver Nuggets, right, prop them up. And when the Utah Jazz come up, I usually try to give them a little pop. Not that I bring them up on my own. But I usually try that. Don't forget about Utah. Well, coach like I'll always throw him a little bunks. I know that they're good. And now here we are. We're illuminating Utah and I feel like I'm now going come going the opposite like here's my chance to like help elevate them, But I don't feel that in my heart. I don't because I just I keep going back to Mike Conley, who you know, is a good killer. He's 32 33 got some miles. I know He's a good player. I know that. He was great with the Buckeyes. He was great with the Grizz. He was great. Got that big. It's not great, really, really good with the Grizzlies Great, All state and I just can't And this is maybe my bed. I just can't envision Mike Conley being What? What He will be required to be in a seven game. Syriza's to beat the Lakers. I just I don't see it. Yeah, 16 points a game 16.5 points per game. He's finally half percent 5.5 assists. I mean, he's a good player. Very good. But, Mike, we need you to call 30 tonight. E. Yeah. Is that happening? I don't know. I don't think so. All right, let's get the update. Acts on top of that is you actually feel today, buddy. You good? I'm good. I'm good. You could be president. Think yes, Happy President's Day to use well, What's a happy Valentine's Day? But we know it was lonely for active, just somebody healthy. "Here in 2020 what, each and every night about this time we give you something, something that could be a rent or could be a rave, But it's always something good that we like to call. Freddie and Fitz Simmons. Last word my brother FitzSimons on this late Monday early Tuesday. What is your last word? I'll never forget talking to Jason Witten his last year the Cowboys before he went to the Raiders after having the 14 into broadcasting coming out of retirement. And going in one last hurrah with cowboys before going the Raiders and now and now retiring for good. So what do you want to do, man? You said, Look, I'm going to be a coach. Have to be around the game. But I want to be close to my family Also. So he said college right now, no NFL right now. No, and he turned down. I know for a fact several opportunities Too. Right now straight out of retirement. Be a position coach. A big boy colleges and in the National Football League. What does he do? It's just typical Jason Witten. Of first ballot Hall of Famer. Is now the head coach at Argel, Liberty Christian football. That's where his kids go to school. It's a suburb right outside of Dallas, Texas, just little North. And if he said, it's a great day to be a warrior And that's it. Deliberate Christian warriors. Can you imagine going and coaching? If your if your kid there, right? And your new football coach is Jason Damn wooden. A cowboy legend and you're playing there. Doesn't get much better. He's going to be a remarkable football coach. Not just this. You're getting his feet wet, right and and going into being a head coach. The high school level. He could step in right now. In my opinion, Freddie Being offensive coordinator in the league. I'm not talking college football. I'm talking in the league and the moment he is ready. From the University of Tennessee. Where he starred as a tight end. The Cowboys got him is a third round pick. That if things don't work out with Josh Heiple As your new head coach and 34 years. There's one phone call making one Does the man's intimate knowledge of the game. Of people judging people on how he interacts watching.

"Cool. All right. So So what's the vibe on the Heiple Hire our people starting to buy in a little bit warm up to what are they still kind of Skeptical about it. I think this is general feel about. Ah, get nepotism. I think Tennessee fans remember when Danny White was that U. C s and he jumped up and down like microwave popcorn when he's CF was undefeated, and he called out the big programs and Kind of make a made a scene and I don't think really anybody in the South kind of took that seriously. Especially SEC. Teams know what it's like to play. Uh Strong defense is weak in and week out and stronger competition. Well, that's an interesting point, Amos and thanks for the phone call, thanks for being gracious about everything. I appreciate it. And thanks also for following me, as you said on instagram to here to see that pork butt that I smoked up last weekend for championship weekend. Have a great weekend, buddy. My thoughts on the Hypo Higher is When you have Danny White B A D come from UCF, and he says he's gonna cast a really wide net and try to find the absolute best candidate and you can't and then he ends up with his former coach at UCF, Josh Heiple. It does feel like it was a backroom deal like Hey, this is my guy. I didn't really look too far. I want to work with my guy. Let's get in the front door. So I understand that skepticism. What I would also counter, though, is Maybe Josh Heiple actually was the best candidate after throwing up a wide neck. Remember. The Tennessee has had major turnover at the head coaching position over the last 12 years. They have become an afterthought of the SEC East, where Georgia and Florida have run laps around him. Given annual game against Alabama. And they have the carnage of the Sensi double a investigation where you're gonna have major players leave and transfer. And it's gonna be hard to build back up. You're kind of waiting for the anti Double eight. Eo, drop the guillotine on you, and so it's not a desirable job right now. And so the way that I look at this is this Josh Heiple. Exciting is offense is impressive. His coaching record kind of getting worse and worse by the year isn't The fact that he was hired by his buddy, Is it exciting, but he does have a good track record with quarterbacks. But Tennessee, unfortunately, might not have better options right now. So If Heiple is there through this rocky era. And he delivers some exciting offenses and he developed some exciting quarterbacks, and he steadies the waters because him and a colleague coworker And a friend of Danny White are able to Maneuver their way through the politics that have kind of beset Tennessee before then it might be the guy that you need at the time right now, but not the guy. Long term. People might be the right bridge right now. Getting you over this rocky point to where you could then hire the next really impressive candidate that excites everybody. No offense to CBS sports, but that's the truth. The D a show with you in the car or on the go wherever you are. So Tennessee fans have been handed a smoldering pile of dog poo for a while now and after you had Major coaching stability from the seventies through the two thousands. Ending with Phillip Fulmer. You've now had just a bunch of Coaching hires and fires and embarrassments. The Derek Dooley nonsense and then the Butch Jones weird press conferences and then the Jeremy Pruitt stuff and Not hiring Greg Siano and the mob mentality that was behind that. And now you have Josh Heiple. And I totally understand evolves fans that are underwhelmed by this higher, totally get it. The thing is, the Tennessee football program should not be a joke. There are some programs that are a joke. That should be a joke. Tennessee program should not be a joke. Tennessee resides in the best football conference in America. And on a side of the conference. That is competitively beneficial. Yes, You've got your rivalry game with Alabama. But being the SEC East has always been way better than being the SEC West With Auburn, Alabama Ellis you now A and M. Tennessee has 100,000 people that will show up two Saturdays in the fall. They've got history. They've got Heisman Trophy winds. They've got national championships. They've got NFL pros. They've got a lot a lot, and they should not have to be a punch line. So for evolves, fans That were underwhelmed yesterday like this is the best we can do, Josh Heiple. Get it. Because it absolutely feels like the athletic director Danny White, who was hired from UCF didn't look very far to get his guy or Ah, bunch of people turned it down. They had to end up settling for Heiple. The idea that Hypo was the number one choice is obviously fraudulent. He was not He could not be the number one choice. A guy that won six games last year cannot be the number one choice from a group of five school for a SEC team. Get it. And that frustration by balls fans is totally valid. Will say. The reason that Tennessee's in this spot Is a bunch of busted hires of guys that couldn't get the job done and a Very Disturbing and dysfunctional coaching, search and power play by donors and media members that end manipulating What the public should want. And that whole issue is is another can of fish. It's a whole different situation where it's not always hiring the right guy. It's hiring the guy that makes people happy, and that's not always the right guy. So if Heiple ends up being the right guy, But did it make people happy? So be it. Who cares? If you're underwhelmed that he ends up being there for 10 years great. I always felt this way. Tennessee needs a guy that feels like this is a great job and not some type of saving it out of a burning wreck. And If Heiple can do that, and he can streamline some of the issues with administration because he knows the A D. That's good. He comes from an offensive background. People have always Considered him a bright offensive mind that's good as well. He also needs to be able to win recruits because they are hemorrhaging players after another go around with another coaching search, improved getting the ax. All of these recruiting coordinators and assistant coaches getting the ax is well in under investigation. So you need somebody who's stable. But who also has a little bit of time dynamic personality because What happened with Butch Jones was He won some games. But Butch just always seem to say the wrong thing was absolutely anti dynamic was the Undine Amick? And that combination made a lot of people real board. Although I will say Butch Jones, you know, going 85 or seven and six. Sounds not bad right now, after what happened to Jeremy Pruitt So I think the thing is, you could be underwhelmed. But if if the salute If this is a fit in the solution so big, you'll take it. You just want to get out of the cycle of embarrassment. That's the key here. And I don't blame balls fans for being Tauron at this, okay? Yeah. I mean, I want to believe in the guy, but I can't believe the guy because the program never gives me any any reason to believe. Too much dysfunction. I think what you just have to do is unfortunately right now, you just take a wait and see approach. If you're not jumping up and down with pom poms, that's totally fine. You really don't have a reason to do that. And you see The little things the small steps. What's the staff look like? What's the early recruiting return to look like? There's a scene in anchorman, one of the all time great movie lines. Where will Ferrell goes that escalated quickly. But not quite what happened in Green Bay this week. More like that De escalated quickly. After the Packers lost in the title game, Aaron Rodgers seemed unsure about his future in Green Bay. And a couple days later, Rodgers Had a different tune his weekly appearance in the Pat McAfee show. Rogers said that he didn't see any reason why he wouldn't be back. Although there are no absolutes. As I said at the time yesterday at this time, I said, I don't know if this is a real story. I don't think it is. It sounded like wishful thinking, because then that allowed shows to go. Let's speculate where Aaron Rodgers could end up and I went Let's slow down here. Because I don't know it. We've maybe in frustration. He just said something off the cuff. Aaron is very calculated. And it feels like Hey, I just put a little smoke bomb out there. Hey, what's everybody all upset about here? And then you realize they're kind of reacting this way because of what he said, and how he said it when he said it. Oh my gosh, Does he want out? Does he think that he's going to get out? Uh And then you had Mike Florio in pro football talk, saying a source said that Aaron Rodgers wants a new contract. I said Why? I could see that. But not that he would want out like, where is he going? And like Davante, Adams is still there. You could still have a good offensive line. You still have a good nucleus there, young nucleus there. You're playing in the NFC East or the undersea North like, you know, that's not you not to worry too much about who you're playing most weeks there within the division, but The Packers president Mark Murphy said. Well, he said, this about Aaron Rodgers. I just want to ask you and I want to go into great detail. But how did you take what Aaron said yesterday? But there's a lot of futures that are going to be uncertain myself included in any kind of chuckled and that has just gone. That's going ballistic today. National No, No, I'll say this There's no way and that Aaron is not gonna be on the Packers. I mean, he's he is eyes gonna be the M V p of the league might have had his best year ever. These are unquestioned leader. And you know, we're not idiots. Yeah, That's the right answer because Aaron Rodgers isn't going anywhere even if he isn't 37 Roger's coming off one of his best seasons, and it's becoming clear that Roger's situation might not be enough to fuel the machine That is the NFL off season chatter. No, we We have other things to be talking about that air real I would be more concerned. If I'm Jared Goff in his future in L A. Then I would be Aaron Rodgers worry about Green Bay. Here's what you don't want your general manager to say about your future. Here's Les Snead, the Rams GM on Jared Golfs future With Jared would shown since they started partner together. You know, Jared has more more wins than any other quarterback except Tom Brady. So there has been successes there and now the vision. The goal is to look at the model. See if there's some tweaks to beginning to make sure we get back to who we wanna be. Okay? And finally, I'm sorry I did it. So you can't say this moment. A Jared Goff will be on the team in 2021. What? I can't say it. Jade golfs a ram in this moment, and I said its way to her and speculate. Future that's beautiful mystery. Of course, he's going to be there. He's under contract. It's a beautiful mystery. What? Yeah, he's quoting Aaron Rodgers there. How would you feel if your Jared Goff after hearing that? What's the mystery? I thought I was the guy. Yeah, I thought I was That was a beautiful mystery, but we solve the mystery and you're not going to be our quarterback. I don't know if they can trade him. You know this dead cap money in salary cap issues and all of that, but Um I get the feeling when I saw Jared Golf last year, and I saw Jimmy Garoppolo. I was sort of seeing the same quarterback. As far as I don't know if the team was They invested in them. But I don't know if the team was really looking at them as you're our leader here that were firmly behind you here, and I think it's a very tenuous situation with Jared. I think it is with Jimmy Garoppolo. I think I think a few quarterbacks around the league. Because it doesn't take long for a franchise to go. You know what? Maybe we should move on. Just the fact that there was a report that the Dolphins were auditioning to its hunger via Loa for the second half of the season. Whether it was true or not. They were auditioning just to see Are you our starting quarterback? He just got there. The Lions have moved on from Matthew Stafford at 8 33. It's not a big deal.
