Zion Williamson, Lonzo Ball, Pelicans Hold off Donovan Mitchell, Jazz for Win

"We are back on. Get up and jay. Williams made his way to take a look at the game of the night last night. A good one between the jazz. And the pelicans and this one was all about ziad. Look at him. Going right equity go back just constantly challenging rudy gobert. He gets his shot blocked more than any other player in the league. But it doesn't matter because it's going to finish at the rim. He had fifteen points in the third quarter. Zion did look at them continuing here and just taking a straw once again. He loves eternal right shoulder. That's his patented move. Twenty-six ten last night for zion who was really emerging clear in his second season. Well let's take you to where this game is decided thirty seconds ago jazz are down by one. And here's the big sequence. J. will often miss from donovan mitchell. Donovan mitchell mrs baruch. I don't know if i call that over to bat call rudy gobert. That just much taller. But since i did it take another look at it here. That's go bear. He does get called for over the bag. Zion would make too so the pelicans of a three point lead in. Here's the final shot. Not a great look that the utah jazz get off. Zion gets the rebound josh. Hart gets uncontested dunk. And that is all she wrote. The pelicans get the win. One twenty nine one twenty four and again as i on finishing with twenty six points. Ten boards five assists. Joining anthony davis as the only players in new orleans history with game with those numbers before turning twenty one years old. They will play again tomorrow night

What's going on with the New Orleans Pelicans?

"This year's deputy f team the new orleans pelicans. I don't know what baker this team you can catch them on any given night and it's a completely different experience than the last night. I don't know if the players make sense together. Actually i'm pretty sure they don't. I don't really know what the overall philosophy is. I don't know if they're trying to be a playoff team if they're trying to be rebuilding. I'm just constantly confused and there are some optimism because they want a couple of games around people here they go here. Zion and then they get killed last night by the bulls and have one hundred thousand breakdowns. And i guess my first question to you is the pelicans what the fuck you. How many exclamation points can we tack onto that. Wt fd think. But i was hoping you could answer this question. Because i think you're spot on in that it's so much depends your view of this team on when you catch them even just like what stage in the season. You caught them because for a minute. It looked like they were going to live up to their personnel and be a tough minded offensive team. Scrounging out offensive rebounds to get points and just kinda struggling on that in because they're spacing issues the script has completely flipped. And now this is all of a sudden very competent offense. I think park has really driven by brandon. Ingram is i ion williamson. They're making that part of it work but the defense. Jesus christ i mean it is. There is inconsistent defensively as really any team out there. Yeah i would say other than brooklyn. It's the team that's most likely to give up one hundred forty on any given night to any team. That knows what they're doing. I so if you actually look at their stats and you haven't been watching that much and you look at the stats and you look at williamson in ingram and all right. Those guys are having good years pretty efficient. And then you look at lonzo and you look at bledsoe. Lonzo shoot thirty seven percent from three so she and forty percent so going into the season like well. Their guards can't shoot. They're not going to be able to have enough space. Well their guards are actually shooting. Okay but then. When i watch everybody together. I don't have a five-man line-up that i liked like yesterday. They're playing Kyra lewis with He he got a little more run and he's really interesting. Rookies really fast. He's little darren foxy and gave them an energy that i was like. Well maybe this. Maybe i would like this version of the pelicans more. If fast you know now unleash sign a little bed. Go up and down a little bit more. But i still don't know who the other two teammates would be with cairo. Lewis design and branding. And i guess the fundamental question for me is do zion and brandon. Ingram makes sense together on a team. That's actually trying to win the title. I think they make sense on offense but the question was i on really broadly. As who are you going to put the five that's gonna make up for all. He doesn't do defensively right now. That's always been my issue with the idea of playing small and we are putting him at the five his rotations is. Aren't there really the pelicans as a team. If i were an opposing coach. I would say this is a team. We can beat him rotation every they are. Pass away from defensive breakdown every time out on the floor and keep moving the ball. You keep doing what you're supposed to do they will they will mess up in a whether it's undersized guy in the corner doesn't quite rotate over all the way. Jj radic or josh. Hart they try hard. They do what they can. But they're not equipped to be helped rotation defenders. If a guy like zion isn't going to be one so i mean i'm i'm kinda bullish on the anger rooms ion depot in general but i am really struggling to see how you put together those lineups. I can see how they kind of got into this conundrum where they clearly wanted to have some veterans early. Some veterans fell into their lap in terms of what was available and trying to get some pics and make their other moves but long term. It's a weird team to build with. And then you get lonzo into this conversation to and what they want to do with him. It's it's kind of messy.

"All the cdl formats not whereas on right. It's it's like no. Yeah they do it a different yeah warzone. Wars is nasty mutation. You might be up there. You turks mason or symphony. Whatever you wanna call. Tommy pham who guy that just filled the young pss nasty husker. Husker's is a dog. Like my one that i liked to watch stuff like that. So is cool is so fun to see where gaming is going in. Cd's dudes i. I'll play a lot of. It's always good by you. You love play with these guys because goodbyes he just go out there and just you know. Try to try to be a dog. I get out of the most kids or those kind of things. Do you watch a cd. Cdl at all a little bit. Not not too much. I had to kind of get into it a little bit more but you know. I think this is fun to watch. I think i think it's gonna have a big year this year because one they they they took the rousers back down to four which a lot of people say. That's just help. Call duties meant to be played but to they like i mean it's a new league so like they're just starting to get their feet under them so i think every year is going to get better but this year particular there's just a lotta like narratives around the league because la thieves are in it. So like nate. Got a team which was like a huge deal. Heck's reclaimed the optic ip so huntsman. Optic and then there's one other one other thing but yeah it just feels like there's a lot of buzz and hype around the league now definitely is so it's like you said it's news has been growing I think that's the biggest thing especially for. Somebody's guys like it gets. It's really competitive pure. I don't understand like it's gets competitive at that level and and it's it's fun to watch. I always have plasma. I watched it. And but i miss you and i went to a land atlanta vent in anaheim at the. I think it was a call of duty worldly but obviously like that can't happen this year. It's all everyone's competing from from home. But i've never been to like never been to like a seal land that but i've heard that like when it gets really intense and like the crowd's going crazy like it's it's it's insane experience. I i really want to check on that. When it gets back to postcode immunity would have one one. Yeah another interesting thing is like you have to despite whatever you wanna say by activision and their inability to stop hackers The staying power that call duties add like a game is just insane because like how many games go like how how often were you. Were you playing fall. Guys are decent amount and then and then nothing like a month. you know. it's funny. As is i don't know if you remember but when it was really huge there was like ninja earn knows like mr b's g to and like aim labs they all like put in money for skin and skin like just came out.

"Brains and exert even in some people on here that tune in my twitch. Doing like the the knife for boston on you know what. Nfl was having streamers stream them there the night football game. So i think you're gonna start seeing that. Even more and like twits shannon iphone you two are gonna diss blow the roof and new. Needless to say i was early. Investment twitch who you know they got. They got bought by amazon. Yeah what's honestly. If you really think about it. They might have sold up too early because they're definitely so tour because if they sold it in like a year oh my god they were so billion billions. Yeah it's interesting too. Because like you said about the thursday night football like like twitch like is just becoming a immediate destination i i know i mean just chatting has consistently like one of the most popular categories like there's people who host whole podcast on twitch train being one of them. Who's like who's really kind of innovative on that like format. But you know it's become more than even a gaming platform becoming like a live content hub hub. You know and it's great because i've done You know some of like the durham pointing like call duty tournament and and it was crazy by like we talked about. You know the nfl doing it but it will be brand that you wouldn't even think. Oh like bud light like bud. Light hat you know. Twitch channel had the whole tournament going on you know light. So sir aaa aaa. Who's been in it for into gaming for several years. But you know you see. There's so many different brands. I really was that a couple figure out more time. I had known you know thinking but now there's a lot of brain brain you wouldn't think about you know being on twitter doing being v against basically getting into the video game space kathmann cash out killing it..

"Straight you know when my one of my good friends you yeah man. But i don't i don't i would not want to be in cleveland. In in in march. I'm going to be in columbus will let you know how it is. Good luck with. Don't brother i am not jealous. I got. I'm curious to hear what you think of this. I just got a text from cameron. And he said last-second heaves shouldn't count against the players field goal percentage. Unless it goes in it. Shouldn't it really shouldn't. But i don't know do do guys. If guys are like half quarter whatever do they wait for the buzzer to sound and then and then shoot it. Just just after that. Sometimes people would do that if it was like a hat like half court heave when it's like you know an actual meg somewhat. Maybe make three pointer they want. But what Is funny and now we're gonna wrap appearance at what water. What's important for you for the pelicans specifically for the rest of the season in order. Like the cops which you guys want to accomplish defensively rebounding and and and rebounding what we've been you know pretty good. I was like say this will like like nine. Nine th overall in defensive rating thing. We're top three and rebounding percentage So our standard eight teams usually perf- like hot rank highly defensively. Yeah so. I think you know we get a little bit. Better and defensive end Keep over rebounding where it did not get better. I think those those carry us throughout the season Offensively we gotta get gotta get better. You got to get a little bit better internal organization and stuff like that but obviously they come with time You know. I think that's part a little bit harder because you have to get used to everyone's strengths everyone's You know comfort level. You know new new new system and those kind of things with in defense of a new system guy is going to be offensively. it takes a little bit longer. So he's got to get better on offense of end In terms of organization. Take care of the ball into this kind of thing. We do that. We're gonna be you know we're going to be a tough team. We're going to be team that no-one i'll that a lot of guys are going to use normally was going learn new orleans nagai the rest guys and they think it's easy win now you know it's not that way and you know if we think we continue to do those things then we'll we'll be a force south got some dogs chop it with you. Thanks everybody for listening to another episode of our podcast and also thank you to our sponsor and good luck thank mega..

"The you know and get better watch some film. Get better with You know going. Going through offense of defender schemes. You know slowly because obviously when When you're competitive especially with young guys when you competitive you know and you have to our practice and you got plan five or five. Everything's good you got plan hard button your but doing all those things but a lot of times people struggle when you slow things down and you know you're you're walking through defensive schemes. You walk through offensive play calls and stuff like that and then you're mice are going to places like you you you wanna be there just like your mind is trying to go one hundred miles an hour and right now. I don't need to go one hundred miles. An hour need to go ten deaf. So that's kind of what we have to do now. We have to get better with Get better in terms of just watching film and mentally going through thing that a slower speed because you know if we try to practice for an hour and a half and get after it you know for practices. We're going to. We're going to burn out very quickly this season. So that's something that we really have to do. It is something that we're focusing on It's not easy but you know we're getting better at it and You know that that's what we had to do this year. So we're looking forward to the challenge. I think we've done a good job so far this year but You know he's gonna keep doing it. Yeah well with the increase. Focus on game planning and film out. Imagine that's where four years of college definitely comes in handy especially at villanova. You know deaf It's it's so crazy because you've met goes right you you've seen how coaches and his philosophy suffolk that bro him and stand or like do identical. It's crazy it's crazy stuff that he says i have a flesh bags and i'm just like what the fuck i got. I got i left. I got rid of course right to ask like i. I did my four year. I did my bid. I did my time with a mike. I wanted to get as far away from fucking coach. Right there was renting. I do a ton of code is i. Don't wanna die on the floor for those ball. I don't wanna take charge practice. I trust my body got games and all that and then get this year. And it's getting an elaine stop not quite jumps up. Stop getting lane. Don't don't doesn't like this jumping in the air to pass you know because the ball is on the rim did it is so many things that just coincide with coz right. His philosophy is just like shit on back at nova honestly. Has stan acknowledged like to you..

That the clipper is the clippers that got smacked by on my rex wax Milwaukee killed miami the other day. Milwaukee got killed by twenty thirty but knicks So it's actually like a like this year has been a lot of gave that had been blowout but any given night anything could happen and s the beauty of the league. Click looking good. Yeah they're three and one. I think god on twitter who the undefeated thinking with the magic the magical the only team that were three now. I don't know if long. I think the the foreign though. I think that only before and the only undefeated team an mba so while marquel actually playing really seen too much. Yeah i think he's averaging like twenty years when he won. This is so funny. I don't know why i only knew. This may blow out before like question. Who is your if you had to put her early. So that's really what i've been doing. So it's like. I told you guys earlier. My mba life is very Not too exciting so as much as kind as much as it pains me to say this. You also have a pretty good fantasy team. I do have a pretty good fantasy team. I've actually been been killing my fantasy leagues. Actually let me go see. Actually got a couple of people playing today that actually. I don't think i don't think gonna affect me too much. But i'm in. I think i'm in either first second in almost all my leagues. That's actually wild elma. I'm like seventy three early on the playoff. Push right now. It's going to be very close for me. And i play you. I play you then you don't. You don't need the win but i do know i don't. I'm i'm seventy three in the league that i am the ceo of Overly were a lot of my guys played at villanova. Worry on and i'm i'm seventy three. They were sleeping on me. They thought they thought shit was sweet. I started out a win to and then after that is a ww one loss ww. Actually on a one two three four five. Five game win streak. I just played the person who's number one in league matthew kennedy and looks like i'm going to beat him so i'm killing and my and my team is stacked i got well. I had joe burrow but obviously he got hurt so actually traded. I made a trade traded curtis samuels and durrell henderson junior. Tom brady so my. Have tom brady. Dalvin cook derrick. Henry davante adams terry mclaren raw rob gronkowski and then my flexi gonna be hines. Colts johnson taylor from the calls mike williams jesse jackson when he gives back For the chargers new orleans defense. And then i got the kicker from vegas so my team's kind nice i don't want to jinx it kind of nice in the other team league what am i. What am i in this league. Marley guy i am into but i caught a big eldest week. There's only thing. I hate about fantasy. Because i had a bunch of news from the from the buffalo bills. I like jeered. Allies by quarterback had their defense now had one other person ever ingram was one of my tight ends. He was on by so had a bunch of guys that were owned by and it was like all right. But i have a nice bench. But i don't wanna drop anybody and get a quarterback because my dues nice i could try to trade him for some some like i just took the i was just like you know what i'm gonna take the l. I'm still going to be in like first or second. And i'm gonna keep all my players so it's a nice life. I wish i could wish i could say the same. I'm out here fighting tooth and nail. Going to get every dollar i can. Two of these leagues gives them some money..

Patrick beverley some of those guys like there's no friendliness competition and then you know maybe off season. Then it's like all right then you know we can be cool and all that but It was definitely hard to coexist with some of those guys. Because like we see you know seeing damon see espejo exceed. The wide just came out with a wine there. Obviously i love one i was. I was drinking Drink his one night. And i seen him. Now it's like. I'm not saying they're trying to have to most conversation with you. 'cause like i'm sitting there hoping you'll lose and we win and doing all that so it was. It was just weird. But i'm happy. I'm hoping we don't have to do that again. And if we do gonna. I don't i feel like i do a probably popov's any unlikely unlikely. New friends from the bubble unlikely new friends. I think you are in the same investment. I think it's like five or six different investments so crazy because you know you always grow up thinking oh we can do this this and this and is kind of how we can work together and then you know you grow up and life happens and then you guys go you know you raise then somehow you know you make your way back to doing stuff together so it was actually really really. Yeah i mean you know when we were like hooping together in high school. I think if you would ask me like what the perfect scenario would have been like seven years down the road. That was when i still had you know. Nba or professional aspiration. I would have been like. Oh you know what it would be us like hooping together like in the nba. Which don't get me wrong. I would would probably be pretty cool but but now that like you know. We're doing what you're doing like not to like. I don't wanna like gas myself. But like what you do what you do at the highest level. And i like to think that like i do the same just like at a different and like a different game and i think it's just really cool that i'm able to take what i do and bring it to your world. You're able to take some what you doing bringing into my world. And i think that we offer each other just something that's really unique. And i think that you know you're an adviser dr tar business intertwined. I think that what you've done in your career. We see you guys doing a lot of work gaming. How can we do this. And so we realize like. Hey there's a really cool white space here for for an agency that can can walk these worlds. You know play between these worlds really really well And so we quietly for the last. I guess three years or so have been doing gaming work under the cut and sew name and it wasn't until recently that we spurred us ourselves ourselves down and we're like we can't be an industry agnostic agency and reach our full potential in the space because the gaming industry is too protective. It's too wary. It's to sort of aware of others that are looking to come in and exploit it which you know we'd like to think we're not doing And so we built zone gaming which sits undercutting so and it's It's exclusively dedicated into the gaming space. So it's you know working with brands. Both endemic and non endemic Doing everything from social and digital influencers to content to live event production to brand strategy brand identity Really anything on the marketing side. We feel really really confident in doing And then i'd say an interesting part about our mindset is we're not just using. We're not just a service business. Saint peter's okay and so by default. I have to teach them about endemic and non endemic brands. Okay let's just part of the curriculum because that is what the industry talks about right. I personally hate this sort of differentiation. Between the two. And i'll tell you why i hate it because it makes it seem like non endemic brands. Don't really belong right. Like like like endemic brands are special and and are part of the the group and on drawn in the sand right. I kinda hate that. Because and i've spent quite a bit of time in the last two years educating brands so sort of the peace before where you come in which is like what do we. Why do we need to know about east sports at all. And why is it interesting for us at all. And then they sort of decide what they wanna do in the but but even like as part of that education process. What i've realized is some of them do feel excluded in this. Non endemic brand. Sort of category. My question to you. Is you really treat those two categories differently when a brand walks in the door. And do you agree that maybe this differentiation is something that should go away. I think we treat them differently. And the reason we treat them differently because in my opinion you know the gaming consumer is a ruthless one right and if you if you come at them in an authentic way in a way that doesn't understand how they speak their language the emotes they use and you don't speak to them in a way that likes to be spoken they'll write you off forever. And so i think that if you're a brand know not to use this word again if you're if you've been traditionally not a democr- you haven't entered the space before. I think it's really important to take a slightly different approach in. Make sure that you almost Pay your respect and and earn your stripes and pay homage to the culture In a way that maybe a brand who's been activating endemically for a really long time like could skip over. "Matt for our for our listeners and our viewers. Could you tell our audience who hasn't heard of you. That'd be surprised but who maybe doesn't know your background how you got into sports. What you're working on today. Some of the things. I talked about maybe Would love to get sort of the man. Hillman story yeah absolutely. I'll spare you too much. But i I launched a full service marketing agency. That was completely outside of these sports. Space called cut and so Coming up on three years ago now so is in january. Two thousand eighteen with two partners. The three of us sort of just felt like we really unique But also diverse skill sets between Done a ton of work in sports and entertainment space. My two partners were rebound florida at a tech startup that became sort of a case. Study for consumer marketing. It was called jack. Blew up on college campuses. They were the minds behind a lot of that. And so the three of us just kind of linked up and realized that we wanted to to build something together and we had all been doing some consulting on the side and realized that an agency model was really really. Good way for us to be able to you. Know it's not like one. Plus one plus one equals. You know nine right. It's not three so We put our heads together and started to build this business. You know it's a service based business Work with companies big and small and help them help them reach a younger More culturally aware demographic that businesses called cut and so again started it almost three years ago and you know where gaming sort of came into the picture is through our work cut and so will one gaming as as ubiquitous at this point right at it is. It is so far transcended. It's it's it's individual industry in seeping into everything that we know and so If you do anything in the world of sports entertainment or music or it's really hard to gaming wasn't always like that but We were doing a lot of work with with athletes Who were really really passionate. Gamers and this was late. The early two thousand eighteen. When you did it wasn't commonplace to see athletes in celebrities streaming on twitch this was pre ninja drake. This was It was it. It was a little bit of a different market And we want athlete in particular. We're working with a guy named josh. Well then you're starting to see that more and more with No at least now you know we're starting to get smarter and and it's not just about you know their salary and it what we get paid and all that it's about you know generation wellness about using our platform in using thing our network to know. Make a better life for ourselves and our family and UC like like Braun is obviously. Let's see one of the best players ever you know lace them up but when you know just one of the best businessmen there is and it goes from that so you have that model. Then you have have steph doing what he's doing. Katie don't he's doing iggy doing what they're doing. It just trickled down so you know. Luckily you know we have those guys. They'd take somebody hits and they take some of the bullets for some stuff but for for us you know on the end of that total bowl so I don't really take too much hits but You know it's amazing to be able to now you know follow your passions and it's not just like Oh shut up in Gerbil and just play Bass S.. Won't this all you focus on. It now is about you know being able to follow other passenger to have outside of basketball. Yeah I mean it's it's actually it's actually it's it's crazy. How far how far? It's calm like rich rich setup but the amount of like little mini empires within the NBA. You name some of them but like like you know Chris. Paul Incredible Business D. Wade incredible business. Look what he's done with way of like every every single one of these. These guys is building empires underneath themselves. It's just you know we've never we've never seen anything like back in the day you know it was. MJ who had the the you know he sold a lot of shoes was in a movie but and had like incredible credible endorsement deals but nothing to the level that we're seeing now of guys creating new businesses and building investment portfolios. It's it's just incredible exactly so I think I think we're winding down Bro. I know You GotTa Game Tomorrow. I think I think we've We've let the folks folks in plenty. We gotta we gotta gotTa leave some to question. We can't we can't tell them everything we well I hope. I hope that you guys enjoyed that you know. "And they'll take care of you. You know generations that are heart family. But I'm just so nervous I'm just I don't want them to feel like they're entitled or they're better than anyone because does not rely so I that's probably like the one thing you know. I am probably scared about would become. Dad is trying to find find the balance for and we kinda talked about it a little bit. We're Kahlo on that episode but Down was like the the part. I'm really really worried about it. Just because I know spoil the hell out of him I know Shannon is going to spoil them. I know my parents are like you guys are like is going going to be spoiled all the way around but I had to try to find a balance between that and keeping them grounded. Sore uncle is is going to be in that bitch with gifts every day. Oh my God I is is going to be so crazy because there's going to be so many people that is going to be around you guys and then is going to be like random stuff like aac Chef tasha guy that don't know I have a chef down in New Orleans Name is Natasha I don't want to put our whole government out there but I think it's chef Tasha underscore knowle's her ogies follower tele. Jr sent you get a heavy down. WHO GETS A meal fire food? But it's like it's going to be totally because like I said they're going to be spoiled and then you know they're going to be three years old and you know get they're like. Oh well you know I want you know my first you know. Hopefully my first one's a boy and I wanted to be named after me so it was like. Jj what do you want to eat like. And like he'll be saying well. I WanNa pokey bowl or something like that. Like I'm like uh-huh I'm so he's going to be so this sport get whatever he wants so. I don't know Bro that that's going to be. I would be leaning on a lot of the people you know. When that day comes Nassir winter will come but I will be bleeding on a lot of people. I love how he disliked that question and I and it was like a serious question. We gave like a heartfelt. Like I dunno like you would have thought if you're listening to us so like Dang he must be. How about to have Kim like mother on his girl must be like eight months pregnant? Na Na to nine one month pregnant you know there's just I Dunno now we joke about it a lot like we joke about You know I think in every single episode I say something about you having having a kid in the next year and we joke about it but at the same time like you the one thing that strikes me about you is like how family oriented you are and like you know you talk about like you know family and the family that you want to have for yourself more than like anyone I know and you're always like I wanna have four kids and then I want them to have a bunch of kids and I want to be the old. GRANDPA IMPA has a a big ass. House has everybody over for the holidays and has sixteen little cousins running around. And that's exactly what it is like I want to advocates sometime soon. I'm not sure what has the next year or two years But you know if two years ago I don't I'm I'll be looking at Shannon. I'm like all right. It's time but not yet I am very I know exactly what I want I want. I said I want four kids. Two boys two girls already got most of names picked out. I want to retire back. Back in Maryland but Shannon doesn't want to because of the because does he doesn't want to have the code so maybe somewhere warmer by what. I want to have a big house with a big big yard I want I want to have everyone over there for our Thanksgiving Christmas. You Know Memorial Day weekend July for like New Year's odors that I want that to be my house. I want to have the fun in house and stuff like that. So Yeah I'm a very family oriented guy I love hanging out with the family and stuff like that. So yeah that's going to be the life. Ajay heart my single ass is going to be there just hanging out. Ah My single ass is just GONNA be hanging out no kids all of a dog though. May maybe you have to the time two dogs. Oh yeah maybe you have to. I'm going to have two dogs. You Bet to get your your your second one soon. Yeah Bro I totally I I am very I want all myself. I planning out all myself. I had to have two dogs. It's going to be to rots MM stuff like that like I want to have all that wealth I wanted to be. I have a vision of my my mom to say that would be the perfect family so every time I see a family where like for kids in two dogs like I mean like love. I'm like Oh man like they have the life. Did you see a the football player from Michigan State. Nah so his Really sad but he lost both of his parents and he On seeing the dog walked. What is two dollars on senior night? They're the cutest dog throw their Pit Bull boxer mixes. They're very cute. See like I said Nestor. Perfect family for myself but kind of get back to reality And current events. You know we oh you know we kind of started this podcast to list news kind of get into our world and listen to different athletes kind of their grind in different. CEO's and businessmen businesswomen about kind of how they got here and being entrepreneur was was a constant theme in most. If not every episode. And I don't want to Brag or anything but I think both of us are very entrepreneurial or lease we have a good start at least for our age of being entrepreneurs and when I say we both I mean mostly you and luckily you're able to like the little brother I kind of am. I'm able to tag along you. You bless new opportunities to talk about you know your entrepreneurial mindset and kind of you know have you always had that no and if now what made you have have you know what made you have because I think you have a very good You know myself for those things first off. You gotta give yourself more credit. But I don't I don't know any players in your draft class. That are that are doing what you're doing off the court if you could name one. I'm I'm happy to got pretty prolific off the court presence but I think it's just a different lane Yeah I think for me I I. I've always had a problem with authority I didn't I don't I never ever reacted well to being told what to do or when to do it even back in high school with coach single Terry like i. You know as much of a headache as he gave me. I think I gave him one right back. You probably is my parents the same thing so I've never really been good at listening to other people I always Always kind of you know beat to my own my own drama and always kind of wanted to do things my way and you know I just honestly I was. I think I think I think we're in a time where like entrepreneurs are becoming more and more important in society. I think there's people Gary v and like you know what whether people agree with him or not. I think we're in a time where you know. Being an entrepreneur is finally being looked at as like being on the the same level as like an athlete. You know like you have the scooter. Bronze and use have incredible people who are business amazing business people and really pushing pushing culture and the world forward even like you know even if you look at like some of the most important people in the world. Today they're business people there the mark Zuckerberg's Elon John. Musk like like they're entrepreneurs and You know I think I saw that happening. You know five six years ago. It's what I wanted for myself. I studied those people. I you know I started to think about what I WANNA do. What I WANNA be and ultimately what I what arrived at and I think what what most people would probably agree with? Is that the really the only way to have true. Freedom and true wealth is to is owner is to have ownership and and and to own your own Shit And you could have an amazing paying job but if you are reporting somewhere on at a certain certain time every day for others for other people it's going to be really hard to to build real wealth and real ownership and actually have freedom because that's that's why we work and that's why we we make money at the days to have freedom to not have to think about money and to do what it is that we wanted to live the lives that we want is really about freedom and You you know I just saw that early on. I wanted that for myself and I figured you know. Starting companies always risky. But it's probably the longer I wait the riskier. It is and I think that sounds backwards to some people. I think some people would say. Well you should wait till you have more experience or you should wait. Till you've been in the workforce longer but to me the closer. I am having kids and a wife. The more riskier geared is so my mind. If I'm like if I'm in my early to mid twenties and I could start something and I have no overhead and I can cut down my cost of living and you know. Be Frugal in exchange for giving myself. You know the time to take a risk on something. Then I'll do that ten times out of ten. You know when I when I have a kid to amount to feed an roof that I have to keep over his head. It's not GonNa be any easier so I just you know that was always my mindset and I always you know. Even when I was really big basketball I was always very into like you know culture and Music and sports and entertainment. Oh she's very into like what was happening in the world and I would study it and I felt good understanding of it and I always knew there would somehow be away to to monetize that. I didn't know quite what it was. But I knew there would be a way and I just tried to put myself in the right situations and meet the right people. And now I'm finally at a point where I'm able to take everything that I'm passionate about and actually get get paid to you not to do it and to help people understand it and to help help them implement it into their daily lives and I you know in the same way that that you you know you feel like you're you're living the life that you always wanted to live. I think you know for me for for the majority of the first part of my life. I wanted to be doing what you're doing. I wanted to get paid to play basketball but as that became less and less reality in my mind I was like all right. Well what's the next best thing. What will allow me to stay competitive? stay stay motivated. hopefully gained some recognition from it because whether people want to admit it or not they all wanna be highly highly regarded rich rich. Climate said it best in the episode. He's like I never wanted to be famous. I just wanted to be regarded And that was kind of always me I just wanted to be respected and and You know I I feel like I'm at a point now where I'm you know. Hopefully hopefully getting there and You know a lot a lot more work to be done but excited about where where entrepreneurially and and where you're entrepreneurially and and where we're able to you know intersect. Yeah and and for people that don't know love it you know the other new to our podcast or whatever you know matt started a consulting Slash Ashley Marketing Agency with two of his friends Out of La Conso But you talked about you. Know the risks and no being frugal and so just kind of talk about like when you guys started like what was going through your mind because obviously there's so much to the amount of fear 'cause you're like Oh what if this doesn't work out like I might be wasting you know a year or two years of my life. I'm quitting a job where you know. I kind of have a little bit of stability to go onto something where I have no idea what can happen so kind of talk about that and also talk about you. Know the fruit apart because frugal and L. A.. A like it doesn't it doesn't really go together like that's not the norm. La You know you walk down to a block and you see to Lambeau. The Ferrari in Arose Royce and everyone has watches and designer clothes. And everything like that kind of talk about as someone. Who's you know in twenty four twenty five twenty six pudding not business front of yourself and you know not going with the fancy cars at a fancy into watches or the fancy clothes and as you know buckling down and saving you money in kind of really in fessing involving a sofa really.

I had the ten ounce eight five Japanese wag. You New York Strip and truffle. Mac can cheese and Broccoli and Seafood Tower and someone very special in my life sent over a warm chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream from afar. You you know you are Yeah that was. That was my birthday dinner. Khanna Automatic Co really wanted us I didn't realize you got there. I thought about it. I didn't really know for sure until Chose him into bisque. Nath sent a bottle of wine on. Now you're good we actually We actually brought one just paid the corks fee we got the Shoot shoot what was it. Called Croydon. Deliberate was one of the wine access. Wines it was the what the white one with the with. The the Red Cross on it I think it's a Bordeaux Yup good really good well with the with the stake. I was the first episode. We've had we've had no guest. Also a lot of listeners. Have mentioned about having a an extended or a whole episode just about met in my so's relationship and Kind of how. Our careers intersect intersect and Just kind of like the grind of of everything I was. We have guests on. You know just about every week and you guys listen to their stories news and listen to the grind and etc and you know and it's been amazing so far but Now we saw someone who listeners Kinda wanted a AH episode of just kind of our dialogue is talking about our own grinds and our own struggles and things we had to get through and I thought it would be really liqueur kind of do that just because you know. Obviously we're to host of the lighthearted podcast presented by Ben Mo- Home and obviously you guys always Our hear stories from our childhood in you know those kind of things. But you don't really we know you know the full story of note of our lives and kind of how we got here so I thought it would be really cool to be both. That would be really cool to kind of have a episode about our grind. Yeah I mean we You know we try and do like fifteen to twenty minutes intro. Every episode before the guest comes on on audio platforms. Just for you guys to hear hear about what's going on in our lives while we're up to just try and keep it current trying you know not make it so every single Ayodeji just it's just an interview So this is just a just kind of an extension of that of how can we. How can we sort of show more ourselves to you guys and Answer the questions that you guys want want to hear about US and You know like you said we tell a lot of other people's stories so I think it's only right that we we talk talk a little bit more about about us and where we came from in you know. Ask some of the questions that were always asking our guests. I'm personally very excited to hear. Hear you answer the light-hearted ten personally. I feel like you're hard ten is gonNA. It'd be wild that one. Yeah but Yeah I think I think it's a as we round out twenty nineteen. I think it's a good time to do that. We both had eventful years and You know I'm excited. You know we're both from you. Know from Maryland Book Magaz- kind of talk about one year bring. Obviously I know your upbringing fairly well but the listeners. Don't so kind of talk about you bringing uh-huh no the fame and everything else okay. grew up in in Maryland. Along with you. We didn't know each other really but we grew up playing against each other Probably better better a UTAN. I paid for like the the trash ones. You got the last laugh if I was. I was early bloomer. I was twelve years old with a size twelve shoe and like six feet which is why I have all the crazy like old shoes. And I like the bait kind apes and stuff. I could barely wear them like sixty fourteen years ago But now group in Maryland Both luckily Komo was super blessed to have both parents around Younger brother named Charlie who am seven and a half years older. Who is the brother as well? was always always really really into basketball like very much so I kind of put all my chips into basketball really early on and Was Pretty intense about it. From the time I was in like the fifth or sixth grade was like working with trainers around the clock and playing like competitive. AAU and you know would go work out at like at like six. AM on Saturday mornings mornings at Montrose Christian for those guys that don't know or who might not be from the DC area. Those were like the top basketball programs So really from early age I put put a lot of a lot of time into basketball and really like had a lot of division one aspirations and and obviously professional aspirations also was pretty good was nationally ranked in middle school Got Invited all those like all American Camps Athena. I don't know if you remember the fee nom camp and like the the which was in San Diego and there was like a Nike Junior all American. Ken which was that. Who Magic in Virginia? And then there was a Fab- frosh a freshman all American Cam got to that by those while it's funny because we spent we talk on these episodes about. Oh you know you ever look at those rankings and look about look at everybody. Body was not who but anymore while you're looking at one of them so I looked at the rings a little too much but not basketball is like you know how I define myself. It was like everything for me Got To high school ended up Getting recruited to play at Sidwell friends which was an academic an incredible academic school that it could have never gone into otherwise Really really good school. A lot of You know politicians children and we went into school with the children of the president and It was just a really interesting experience or of a culture shock It was it was pretty crazy and they weren't very good at basketball at the time because they were really really good academically. But you know we you and I were like Kinda I along with Jamal. Where like the first people? There that kind of Eric finally got recruited to turn the program around We had awesome coach. Coaching Teri Garr recruit play their played varsity. All four years had really really good freshman and sophomore years Around junior year. I don't know I don't know if I don't know what it was but I just I started to like not play as well. I think I kind of got interested posted in some other stuff. Lost focus a little bit. Got The diamond board bro down. We're not gonNA. Oh Man. Oh Man I did I. I wanted to be a rapper at one point. And so he was referring to but yeah I just I got interested in some other. Things ended up getting a girlfriend. We all know having a girlfriend does to people when they're trying to focus this you know just for whatever reason I you know. The trajectory was not where it where it was. ended up actually quitting basketball after my junior senior year. which was crazy? I know you remember that And then was like what the hell am I doing and then decided to quit and rejoined the basketball. Ask Ball team but as anybody who's who played basketball or any sport knows you know if you WanNa play in college you the summer before your senior years like everything and I didn't play you that year because I quit and then I decided we wanna say quick whistle retired. Yeah retired resigned But anyway so by the time I decided I wanted to play again. All the Division One schools have given up their spots and up going to a division version three school called Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh which is another amazing school that I could have not gotten into without basketball. So I'm super grateful for that Went there and again just like didn't really have the career that I had hoped I don't know if it was part the system. Pardon me not being locked in Part me you know enjoying other aspects of college to put it nicely For whatever was again just just didn't really didn't really pan out but the good thing about Carnegie Mellon was I was surrounded by. I really really smart people. Computer scientists business they just all tons of brilliant people and it really forced me to really question my identity and to no longer define myself as a basketball player but really thinking about what interests me Off The court. And that's when I fell in love with technology and and I built a start up while I was in college with a couple of friends that we ended up raising some money for and and launching in Pittsburgh which ended up not succeeding but took some amazing lessons from it ended up getting some great internships in the music and entertainment space and So you know I know I've been rambling a little bit but if I had to sum it up you you know grew up super interested in basketball and then was had that kind of taken away from me and was really forced to to find other stuff and I think that's honestly what led me to where I am now and now through working with you and other guys in working with the PA.. I'm able to Impact actually the game in the culture of basketball in the sport in a way that I never would have been able to as a player so I'm definitely grateful for for how it went. I know that you asked me about my upbringing. I gave you a whole ass all last last thing. But yeah that's that's that's me I think that's always you know for a lot of our guests that we have on here Including yourself I never really know what's going on. You always have a dream and you have a plan. But it's like you know it's always about the work in the grind and you know for a youth like Oh you know you grew up Kinda put almost all year then that you know the basket of basketball but You really wanted to focus on it. But then as time went on you had other interests and other passionate and things you know you really do well really exceed it you know. That's kind of cool part about your grind is because as you know it'd be random times in college. I think when you got out of college towards the end of I want someone you've got out of college..

"You know where he comes from. No pun intended he you know his parents. You know what they stand for so you know his intentions are always good. You know his heart good so so it was more it was more of a maturity you know being seventeen eighteen year old kid when you come in and you're just so competitive you can't control it to to to the end like that play josh helping up angel dugout at the end of his career. Didn't that didn't surprise me but i was a happy that at least everybody else got to see the other side of them because to our opponents he was villain you know because he because he was a killer. You know you just so tough and competitive to other coaches two other coaches. They would tell me all the time like i. I would kill to have a guy like that. You know that that just competes like that you know i always remember the game at xavier. You're in josh new senior year. When <hes> are starting senator without daniel jeff was out running coronas was out and then we play kris jenkins it the five he got in foul trouble. We played josh hart at the five spot on national t._v. It was like a one vs forces. We were number one. They were like the readers or and you know so a game where i tell the story to basketball people all the time i remember when they were when he's going to get drafted. I told everybody this was a number one team because number three team on c._b._s. At on the road and josh's playing the five spot guarding these monsters and we can't run stuff on can't pull somebody getting every rebound. He ends up the game with like eleven points ten rebounds something like that and we we win and somebody kris jenkins hits threes. They get all the hype and i'm like are are six five two guards play. The center spot verte target was unbelievable when he was happy as hell we want eating care and that's that's true josh hartnett and that's rare that is rare in today's game. You can't say we don't want to just talk every year. Every season you guys had the that thirteen and nineteen year with with big. You know i guess big for where villanova is now. Could i was you guys didn't make it to the tournament guys struggled that year <hes> but it kind of shows how well <hes> no you handed recruiting and coaching after that because obviously you guys that you know the played in a fine for ami and just as a play i don't want i don't i know some of those guys and they're all great guys but sometimes you get bigheaded and stuff like that and obviously we went. We won announcing championship so you're getting married to all of our heads..

Lakers, LeBron James and LeBron discussed on First Take

"What's going on. Everybody welcome. I take Molly came here and we have some major. Exciting news here on I take. I am so happy. So Maxon Stephen may be on vacation, but they are getting ready to take on the Big Apple. I take officially moving to a new studio in New York City. The debut show airs on Labor Day, September, third. So we may be changing the location, but you can still expect the same hot towards debate. And of course, lots of special guests and surprises to welcome the show to New York in speaking of a voice. I miss Steven, you're on the phone. Hey, how's vacation going in your discreet location? Disclose location? Yes. I'm loving loving. Neely, I, you know, I relaxed enough to get ready to beat up on Maxwell another year. And what have you that's a given look comes with the territory, but I mean credibly excited that we're moving to New York City both myself and maximum native New Yorkers. It's been a long time coming. It's something that pleaded in baseball for years, and finally it's happening. So I'm incredibly excited. Yes, I am Stephen, I cannot wait. And I think one of the major things I'm excited about is obviously, you know, it's the mecca for for a lot of things, especially I still consider the NBA as well. And I think certain guests will be able to get there in a lot of other surprise and stuff will have for the show. So I think it'd be major, but I, I know you have to be kind of sad because you're not going to have to drive up to bristle anymore. You're not gonna come up here. You know what it is. It is a very, very sad day because I mean, what's not to love about Bristol, Connecticut. I mean. ESPN down the block that there's a McDonald's and and and and and a ruby Tuesdays and stuff like that. I've really, it's really sad that I'm not going to be able to be there because I'm going to be in new you most times and on occasion, I'll find myself with John and feed and Dominic in LA. I mean my God, it's such a tough tough situation, but I think I'll say, I can't wait and obviously can't wait at four t with you guys. Now that'll be on your home city, but saving, I'll tell team soon. I hope you are actually relaxing for some reason. I don't believe you, but please do that because you know, once you're back, you're back. Just know this when I'm back copy ready, then I'll tell, sorry my condolences to Mexico element in advance must've taken. It's about to be out. All right, Steven, Al. Talk to you soon. All righty. Thank you. Congratulations, Shane. Okay. So we have a first day moving to the Big Apple catch us every day at ten eastern starting on September. Third. Sports right now. I'm at Collins, new Denver Nuggets. Point guard. Isaiah Thomas is sitting down with our MBA insider h. g. now ski, I t who signed a one year two million dollars contract with the nuggets. Last week opened up to watch telling him this free agency was flat out disappointing, the twenty nine year old who continues to fight the perceptions of his help. One onto say, quote, people know that I've earned deserve the Bax contract, and that's the only reason why I didn't get paid what I deserved because I got injured. I get that. The biggest thing for me was to get to the best opportunity for me this summer and show that I'm healthy. You can read. We'll just four article on Thomas right now on ESPN dot com. Staying in the NBA with Kawai heading to Toronto on the broad in Los Angeles. We're looking ahead to who are the best and worst team heading into the season where than forty ESPN reporters, insiders and editors came out with a new set of power rankings. You'd think with James in Los Angeles Lakers at least at the. Five think again, no surprise. The warriors are on top, but three of the top five teams are from the Eastern Conference, the Lakers checking nine, but that's only the six best among Western Conference teams. Let's get back to. I takes Tony. Thank you the Lakers outing. Another piece to help LeBron next season's dining, Michael Beasley to a one year deal. As you just heard the Lakers are number nine in our latest NBA tower, rankings Mazel serve with you. Do think the Lakers or more likely to surprise us as upcoming season or disappoint, you know, I'm a huge Lakers fan. I think they are more likely to disappoint what fortunately with you to say that look. I mean, there are some really interesting piece. I liked the addition of Michael Beasley. They need shooters, but there are some really challenging personalities on this roster land Stevenson and Ray John Rondo and javale McGee. And now Michael Beasley, the expectations are so high for this team. And I think ultimately we're talking about a team that's going to be the six to seven seed. I think in the Western Conference I would never count LeBron. But LeBron James, I don't think has ever been on a team that has finished six or seven in its conference. I think it's going to be a very, very tough challenge for Luke. Walton debt may be the toughest job in the NBA right now, balancing those personalities, balancing those egos and keeping LeBron James happy. Can I respond to Mr. happy over here? Does he need to get in there and say, as I like to say, my real job is at the as the Lakers radio play by play guy. This is going to be great. It's going to be a fascinating lab experiment. Number one, we got LeBron look at the roster LeBron had last year in Cleveland compared to this roster this wrestlers just as good, maybe better. I can't wait to see how these pieces come to. And keep in mind. The Lakers young guys are all getting ready to make a jump. Brandon Ingram doubled his statistical numbers. Last year, Josh Hart was just the MVP of summer league Lonzo ball's coming off of a minor knee surgery, but I expect him to get better this year and Kyle Kuzma was the steal of the draft. I can't wait to see what this Lakers team looks like with will run as the leader. The games are going to be ridiculously exciting, and most of all, we're not going to be losing anymore. I've suffered through five straight losing seasons. The end of that is here, and I think that the Lakers are going to surprise a lot of people in the opposite of Mason. Dominique. I think the Lakers are, if you look at that roster, there's some real possibilities. I think I agree with you in part because I don't think the expectations are very high expectations are pretty low for this team right now. All the reporting about other opinions about this team is that they're the. Main team there. They're a bunch of guys who are wildcards and is no way that you can put together. And it seems like every other week, the Lakers are coming out trying to defend their roster construction and try and explain to us what they're thinking. I think what they're trying to put together as a smart team of bunch of guys who have veteran experience that are adaptable on defense can pass pretty well not as many shoot as you would like to see. But they have a couple of shooters. I think they have a decent team and they have a guy by the name of LeBron James. I don't know if you guys watch the playoffs last year, watch any basketball. James is pretty damn good, and he makes your team a contender immediately. So I think that's -tations are low. So I think they will surprise and then you look at the Western Conference. I think we talk about how heavy how stack the Western Conference is often. I think that's a bit oversold, but to be honest, you look at some of these teams that you think LeBron's going to be worse than Utah. LeBron's going to be worse than Portland LeBron's going to be worse than Denver. Like I know they're good teams, young teams that are getting better, but he's LeBron James and he has a young good coach. Luke Walton wa think is flexible and smart enough to make this team good. I think expectations are low so they will surprise Molly. Where are you on this? They're going to surprise disappoint. What do we think? What do I think people are expecting? Tell me that for fifty wins is what the expectation is an wouldn't you agree make the Ryan that just came out, said that they were ninth in the Powell ratings, right? The ratings ESPN pirating said they're nice night than they're not yet pulling up pulling up the radio. That'd be about right because there's three Eastern Conference teams, so that would put them four, five, six in the state. I think the expectations are Western Conference finals and.
