Could 60 Games Mean a Bad Team From Last Year Will Be Your 2020 World Series Champion?
"What to expect with baseball's return, and that's where I start okay. Baseball's back and you are what you are angry. It took this long fair. You're indifferent because you already hated it or I guess that's really in different. If you hate the game and you don't care, it's even coming back and you just made fun of it the whole time during this public display of not being able to figure out okay I. Get that one, too, but there's probably a lot of us is gonNA. Throw it on now. The problem is baseball should have been back before. Let's say what a week before the NBA. NBA gets to sing rolling and I don't know how much crossover there is between NBA and baseball fan I'd imagine there's probably more crossover between the NFL and the NBA Fan, but who cares whatever we got this thing back and I. Still Really like baseball and I always thought it was going to happen. There's a specific reason. Why was finally work out? No matter what version of what we have get to that and a little bit because there was a couple of reporters that we're actually seeing like as it's probably over probably doomed. Okay then it's definitely coming back now. Because remember the rules when you're on television, it sounds a lot better. If you're an opinion, person sports saying it's the death of baseball, and I'm now going to write the verbal obituary in. It's never coming back. WHOA, that's a good clip makes a really good video. Good sound bite. Let's play that on the radio. Show a little bit later today, or you could be on the desk and say. They'll probably figure it out, and that's not as exciting, but it's the accurate on the. I would say. It's the lane that I've been in this entire time, so let's take a close. Look at what we have. 'cause look out, folks I the Internet last night and I looked up some baseball stuff. We got sixty games normal playoffs. Thank God good on that a little bit later. But what is sixty games me? Baseball's weird. You can have bad teams. Put together a decent sixty games and could team go forty and twenty. Sure, but I think a Lotta. These teams are going to be right around five, hundred, thirty, five, twenty five, and then you're going link. Think how little! The discrepancy could be look at how the playoff chase ends now in September with the advancement of you know the different kind of playoff alignments they have and I don't like some of the extra game stuff, but it all has been really really exciting. The last few years of what we've seen in more than last five years of what we've gotten out of the baseball plaster incredible incredible. Scenes, finishes and all sorts of drama. In scares me a little bit that the product has been great in the postseason, and if not really helping the rest of the months, but if you look at and I did this I look back at some of the worst teams in baseball interlock. Place all right Toronto Toronto. At one point was twenty nine and fifty two, and then they went twenty, two and twenty over forty two game stretch. That's a sixty seven. When teen played two games over five hundred for Forty Games San Francisco. You Ask all right here. You Go last year twenty six and thirty eight at one point, and then ended up at fifty, five and fifty three, so they want on that Mastro. That's a forty four game stretch were San. Francisco played twenty nine. Nine and fifteen baseball they were a seventy seven and eighty-five team, but more folks I tried the best I could find from their stretches, fourteen and thirteen. That was an awful awful baseball team. Remember Seattle last year against smaller sample. They started the year thirteen and to remember although Seattle tweets they were twenty, five and thirty five, and that was a bad baseball team. How about this one? Miami was ten thirty one on May Fifteenth, then they stretched it to forty one in sixty three. That's a bad baseball team that from Miami. That's a bad baseball team. That from the middle of May to the end July played thirty one and thirty two baseball. That's crazy, and then you have Detroit. Who was actually eighteen and twenty, and if you forgot how many games Detroit one last year I don't blame you because I did to the Tigers in forty seven games and I couldn't find anything that was thirty and thirty over sixty game stretch, but over forty they were two games under five hundred, so we could have some really weird stuff. Now you could have a cy young winner be six and four. You could have with the second base being occupied an extra inning games. The unintended part of that is we could just have a walk fest, and all these extra things, but I'm not sitting here clamoring for. For more extra innings, even though I used to like it when I watch the Games, I can also understand that basically these managers now don't even WanNa. Play them because they'd rather not burn out there. They'd rather take the loss that day. Burn out their arms for an entire week. At least that's what they tell us. All the time is somebody hits four hundred. No, thank you by the way nobody's hit three fifty cents Josh Hamilton like ten years ago. We've had four years over the past four years. Excuse me, five hitters have hit twenty home runs over the first sixty games, so look at maybe twenty. Twenty being. You're leading home run number, and there's all sorts of other things how you're gonNA. Use Your roster with thirty, two twenty eight to twenty six. You'RE GONNA. Call up different players, and how you're gonNA use your

"Anything like that or would make a big sane in in the clubhouse or the call Him To be treated differently. It was Josh Hamilton and forced to get Josh. Before something that back corporate just hit feel for hundred and fifty something game which we want or we had to do what we had to do it but that was never probably Josh Wash. I once asked Dave Dombrowski. This is after the. Tigers came so close to beating the Red Sox and the two thousand Thirteen American League Championship series. And I asked him you know. How long did it take him to get over that That series loss. Because if you look back at it The Tigers dominated about ninety percent of that series. He said you know I. I really haven't gotten over. There was the following spring. I'm wondering about you and two thousand ten two thousand eleven when you think back to game six and two thousand eleven you guys repeatedly within one strike of winning the world series. You've had a lifetime baseball. How do you process that or is it something? It's still kind of nausea. Well it will always know at you when you 'cause you play this game to win the world series. I got two world series in one of my head chance to actually win the first one twenty ten. We didn't have the giants they pitch. Well we didn't pitch very well this a bunch of run but One in twenty eleven I don't think I will ever get that. Want to weigh twice From one to the world series. But you don't was to champion the plane when the way add to lose but I never get over never I just will always remember in the thing that makes me the thing that I thought about. When we lost that game was it wasn't about me. It was about be going up in there being strong from group because we did have one more day to come back out here and I had to be strong for them so whatever. I felt At the time I couldn't tell you what I felt. I was still focused on one game. We had left and then we rock with And then we got back and we had beating two days. The made her in In Texas John Didn't waste any time We had our meeting two days in Texas to go over. What just happened and what we gotta do to get past it into the next year. That's when I fell apart Talking about the game I realized what we just and from that point on you know it it. It keeps knowing that you you. You'd never lose because you so close. You're so close and you can't ever take granted that you're GonNa have an opportunity at a world series. I went back to back years. Still lost for the holiday is always going to beat there. David phrase we had on a few weeks ago and it was very interesting that he told us that when after he tied the game. And then you guys took the lead. Josh Hamilton Hits a home run. David said that he was standing position at third base when the cardinals fell behind and in his mind he made peace with the idea that they were gonNA lose the series. Because you know what Josh is a great story. This is really good for baseball. If if they win it and Josh is a heroic role in it and so David had that mindset As competitive he is and yet they come back and win and you know he's a good guy. Have you ever gotten a chance to talk to him or would you even talk to him about that? No I'm David I like a lot of things. That he's a Gamer You know I'm real friends. We'd be seeing that respect to each other on the let's say to champions out there ballad winning and we just ended up on a shot in of it and they one thing that call data both is three times. I had mentioned to Gary about Being a no doubles and he was slicing bulbs downright learn. We get downright right feline. Excuse me WHO's almost looking quarter and then so you know I didn't really gary up again about was we in doubles. Because he's time I asked him. He was out of that they were but we didn't see no some creep up ball man. A couple of stuff that Nelson creeped up could have been a couple steps that he would sit there and across the ball. But I didn't get upset with Nelson because what else you wouldn't have been there anyway. He told you depot Detroit up only pitching Detroit head it could do not welcome cruising crew there so that was the mantra of that club. We lost we all had a piece of it. We didn't point fingers in. I think was gonNA point thing. Is that All got over his head so It was just one of those things will be Talking Russa had used this whole bench. Oliver been definitely left-handers and he went out there and he had faced to lefties in a pitch. Tony hit ran out of players. Buffets Tulips pitches. And you wouldn't believe those two left. This came with basic pictured bugging them over to wash. I always love talking with you. You know always respect you work. And you're so respected within the game for your honesty and for that work ethic I appreciate you talking with us and distracting us in this tough time. Well thank you appreciate it Old that got a little Giddy when I've seen Texas. I couldn't wait to talk with you. And I'm glad we played with the hookup bleacher tweets already buster Tweets four Wednesday here. I one up our guy. The man the myth the legend form producer in baseball tonight podcast Troy Farkas at Troy. Underscore Farkas writes in if slash when baseball returns? Will there be home and away a masks. What do you think well first off? I'm glad that troy sentence that question before we listened the Ron Washington interview. Because if he had heard that he would have been lying on the floor in a pool of tears because as a rangers fan he would have been so embittered with reliving. Two thousand eleven world series. He wouldn't have been able to even function. I'm guessing that If Troy's ideas right the home away mass which would be pretty cool for him. He'd be wearing it home anything that had rangers logo on it. What do you think absolutely? And there's a about a zero percent chance. He listens to the Ron Washington interview. And I'm trying to go back in our producer. Espn Chad because I think David freeze came up with something came up our producer chat and he just went off and it was a little bit awkward but I respect his passion and I'm glad he's still chiming in here last one for today. Darren Wong at D. Wong underscore rates in. We've heard a lot about baseball ops and player salaries but where Do Co? Coaching salaries fall in terms of cuts. Any grumblings from that part of the sport no question. A lot of grumblings a lot of concern. I would expect it. And if there's no baseball you're going to see those guys potentially furloughed as well like the the furloughs that we're talking about with angels in so many other teams they are gonNA cut deeply Which is why within the baseball industry. The teams have guaranteed to keep people on through October. The padres are in that In that mix the Detroit. Tigers are in that mix there like folk heroes now like they've gained so much sometime coming up. I'm going to have a conversation about that because I her evert some really interesting observations about the teams that aren't making these cuts in how this is going to benefit them. Going FORWARD INTERESTING STUFF. Thanks for right. In in bleacher twitter's Hashtag bleacher tweets on twitter. And tomorrow I'm very excited. We've got Wayne Kirby on the podcast great stories with him absolutely. He of course a longtime coach. Texas Rangers Baltimore Orioles now. The scene Diego padres. He's got stories about Manny Ramirez and other than moment when Jason Grimsley retrieved our Belle's bat from the umpire's room Curbs is a great storyteller talks about fostering the relationship with players a through his humor and his honesty. That's it.

"Third base coach of the Atlanta. Braves he was the manager of the Texas Rangers for eight seasons and twice. The Rangers played in the World Series in two thousand ten two thousand eleven. They one eighty seven or more games in five seasons washing the time you were the manager. Yeah how important would it be for you to get another shot at being a manager? Well for me it was important because I still think I'm I got the ability you know to to to meet a group on to lead an organization To to to to go exactly to the world series I've never lost at drawing So I still think I have it matter of fact I knew I haven't. I don't think I have. It is not I definitely do again. I just walked up to opportunity presents itself. How close did you feel like you came to getting that job in San Diego's Fairly public that you were one of the finalists. Well I've felt extremely good about it. You know I have relationship with AJ and I thought I hit it off extremely well with all the ship. I thought I've met age as a staff and I I thought we hit it off well and I really you know and heaven interviewed for a job. You don't WanNa get too giddy sort of save until they've told you that you had the job but I just I just really felt like My opportunity was going to present itself but then San Diego decided that there was going to go on a different direction. You know I'm just happy. Opportunity that include family their wash you you are. You have a great reputation as being incredibly honest an incredibly hard worker And you're also you know year old school in some respects but you've also managed to navigate your way through this shift that the baseball is taken into analytics and I bumped into so many former players who asked me. Hey what do I need to do to be able to do that? What would you tell them about finding their way into this new world In which you know. Analytics drives so much of the conversation. You got to be proactive. You've got to do the best that you can learn what they want to see on the field or learn the direction in which they won't the game 'cause travel right now also you have to embrace the fact that when when you learning from what they want they have to learn from what you have to give to and I think we're guys stakes is They forget what they know and what they what they bring to the table and just because it's something different that doesn't mean that you have to put on the back seat You gotta be proactive. I want to learn it. You know and I'm GonNa teach you what I know. And then that process we just keep moving forward because the game ten and If you WANNA be in the game change with it you can't get upset about the way things are going to be run by the way they won't think but you know if if you embrace dake want you to do and then they embrace what you want to do that it works. And that's that's the way it has to be just because the game is changing. That doesn't mean that you should become dumb to the game of baseball. No and no matter what the number said no you have to know that you will. You will say look. Get what the numbers say. But that's not what I see. That's not what my eyes see. How do you feel like that that honesty is work for you when it comes to dealing with that sort of situation? But I've been very. I've been very fortunate in the game of baseball. The transition I started with with vision in Atlantic with the Oakland A.'s. Yeah it was the first one to to to try to come up with it so I'm learning building being and And then when I went to Texas you know I had some of the best talent that I've ever been around and we were able to put things together on the feel and the way the game being played and then after I left Texas and I went to Atlanta I realized that they were analytic heavy. Also so what I. How did it was I race? What they had to they looked at it. And if I had any questions to ask quest if I ask you a question if the analysis if you question we'll give you an answer. That's I'm not asking questions to downplay with the numbers. Say anything like that. I just want the answer to the question that I ask. If you answered I can see it. I mean when you with those analytic is in a put stuff on the board. It's real it's it's for real. It is a real some of it. You know you may say well you know. I don't agree with that. But for the most part if you look at it it makes sense. Now it's up to you to be able to give it to the kid and and after one thing that I've been been good with And been very fortunate in the game is everywhere that I've been that analytics have been heavy. it's been a two way street. They give it to meet they. Let me apply to the guy who's I'm working with So that he can understand and you explain it to me. And that's how you just keep moving gaming again. That doesn't make any sense to get upset because the game changing the game will always be changing. Wash a few weeks ago. We talked to bill. James is you know is is sort of the godfather of modern analytics and he acknowledged that the area of the game. That were the numbers. Don't as truly reflect what's going on more than any other is on defense. How close do you think we are where you are have the belief That the numbers that are generated On defensive analytics or actually reflective of defensive that you see well To be honest with you in the beginning I was like everyone else gets believe it because I was used to get the chart from a pitcher and then take it home in and color-coded on a on a diamond then as you progress it all comes together but now they give it to you right away and I would say between eighty and eighty five percent of the time. The ball usually hit what numbers saying that. It is going to get hit. Sometimes we may overdo it with the shift but for the both part Eighty five percent of the time Is is right on and another fifteen percent is divided up. It might be five over here. It might three percent over there like nine over there and the game is willing to give up those little bitty percentages and just make certain at the big part is covered and it took me a minute. It really did. It took me a while we get used to it but You know you can't you can't deny like you say which is seen when I have a trail here where they see a guy should be playing and I decided to before I gave into the analytics. I decided to put him here. And then I'll see the ball go that consistently it. Don't take a rocket science. Don't understand this is where he should be. And I'll just do it where it doesn't bother me that the fifteen the eight or nine percent. That's not being covered. It wouldn't to give it to him and I don't get headaches over so it's been working it really. Has You had a prominent place in the book moneyball And then you became one of the prominent characters in the movie moneyball. What was that like To See herself played on the big screen. Well it was wonderful and I was there for the premiere I just. I'm managing Texas at the time and they premiered it over in San Francisco. I happened to be in town I mean Oakland it premiered it in Oakland and I just happened to be in town so I called the premier and I'll tell you what we had we had we had timely hitting What we didn't do there was no no against run into the bay still it. They billion in Hagia base pads and just give out and so we never gave away out because we never had a bunch of guys that could run anyway but we could pitch and we can catch the ball and We never hit We do everything according to personnel. You know Hudson Modem veto would throw the ball and gail too hot air. Tata's jealous geometry would catch the ball and I'm talking about the outfield now. We had some pretty good outfielders out there too. That could run down and we stayed in Bombay and we gotTa Bass hitting the savage eight hundred and one thing that billy bean always head doing that. Money Bowl a period. When I was there we always had someone. That's growing gain weight and get a three hour. We kept closer. We always had a closure so when you went to the premier. How much how hard you work to To meet Brad Pitt. It was easy even he was. He was wide open. There you swell guy you mean. It was just like a family ruin. So did he wasn't it he say. Oh you're one run Washington you know because he obviously read the book and and gone through the movie. I'm curious about how that conversation was. No he didn't know he didn't know I was running Washington and I really didn't Try to impress it up on him. You know what I'm saying. I just happened to shake his hand after the meeting. I did mention my name but was so many people get a piece that A name didn't ring a bell at the time the premier was in Oakland it was at Thank at eight o'clock that night and we had a game that makes day and I was staying in San Francisco so premier entity had after party but then after I got my car and I went back to San Francisco because we had a game the next day. So I'm GonNa ask you the names of some of the people you've been around in your time and baseball and just curious about your stories Your work with Marcus. Simeon made such a difference in his career. As you know there was a time because of the number of errors that he was making that there was a question about whether or not he'd be able to continue shortstop and last year finished third in the American League. Mvp voting tell about why you believed in that that he would be able to make that transition. Well I believe because they'll being called me and when we being called me that showed me. He believes Day Force believed and by Melvin. Believed THOSE THREE GUYS. That could have made a decision on markers that could've just interrupted Marcus career. But they were positive and the fact that they've felt like Marcus could be a shortstop and billy bean do that. I could be the guy to help him do it. And the rest is history You know you could be the best coach of the best teacher in the world muster. But if you can't apply with you giving then that doesn't make you look good at all so for me. The CREDIT GOES TO BILLY BEING. I therefore second Bob. Melvin third because bobbies the one made the lineup and he put him in there every day and then Mauka Simeon. I just put road down there for Marcus travel and he never got off that road. He'd had a question one time and he was a tremendous student. He's a tremendous athlete. A tremendous person..

"Ammo is calling me. Kiedis a researcher. Espn he's a hot show on the show. Get up but as we've learned it's much more that he's a wild partier. Who Facilitates Greenberg now? I'm glad that we finally settled on that. Hembo after after about a year of me Fabricating what I actually do on. The show was finally exposed last week. So I'm I'm actually sort of Surprised I was invited back now. Now that I've been sort of fraud but you guys you guys are having some Grayson at where more under control here. Okay our show so we don't mind if you're kind of putting off on the side and still being on our show. Hey have you seen the movie war of the Roses War of the roses? I can't say that rings a Bell Seriously Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner a lesson for the young here. They're divorcing couple that gets into a knockdown drag out fight over the House that they've shared and as they stake out territories in that house in the end. The effectively wrecked the house. That's what I was thinking of last night when I read the latest story in the back and forth between the two sides a leaked internal memo from Major League Baseball. Of course. That's what the owners do they. Leak Which seems to back up their What they've said that they had an opportunity to renegotiate player. Salaries we move forward. There's a denial from the players association back and forth in that article back and forth last night and I just continue to shake my head saying they need to get along. They're going to with all this back and forth they're going to damage the Golden Goose Hembo. But they don't they don't need to get along as much as they just need to put their egos aside and be grown. Yes in this in this ancient movie. That you share. This'll be rob Manfred. Tony Clark from each other south like you're working their house. I I totally agree with you in the sense that they can't get out of their own way. We talked about this now a few times and I it. It doesn't it never ceases to amaze me how little progress we've made because like we're we're seemingly having very similar conversation last week and the week before and I read The New York Post article this morning as well. It seems pretty clear to me at least that a couple months ago. The Union acknowledged You know given the fact that there's a lot of uncertainty moving forward potentially without fans that these financial conversations would be for debate. What's incredible to me is is now that we stand here less than a week before. Memorial Day that. Not only do we have. We not made considerable progress. They're still the extraordinarily Lack of goodwill that is being like you said publicly portrayed such as possible way. It's the worst possible time to do it. It really blows me away. Yeah one hundred percent. I had an agent say to me. I don't know if you saw what I wrote the other day saying that in this moment because the owners really need this season to happen more than the players do in this particular moment the players have some leverage and they could theoretically parlay that into Future Considerations for Free Agency for service time manipulate for tanking and an agent said. You think that you know these guys have enough time to work it out. I said Hey. Last month we saw Republicans and Democrats Ballard stimulus package in a week. You would hope that baseball officials and the union could work out any kind of a CBA adjustment over the course of what it's been two and a half months. Yeah two and a half months and also nothing else. Nothing better to do either is you're you're caller was outstanding. Because what you said in it that I totally agreed with think. It's hard to deny that. Made the Major League Baseball Players Association. The union can make considerable strides. If they're willing to play the long game if you're not worried about the here and now if you're not worried about how much money and I am. I bringing home for my son this season. If and when we play and you can take a look at a broader scope here because right now I would say. It's pretty pretty obvious. Pretty easy to say that. Stella separately stagnated over the last few years. And there's obviously a wide variety of reasons for that but now is the time this is probably the most leverage that the unionist had. I don't know twenty twenty five years in if you can just harness some of that and show you know fifty fifty Goodwill in some sense at least you might be able to get somewhere and right now. I don't see that happening because these these both sides are dug in their heels so much. There's also a lot of pride here I think. And these are the sort of the tactics that we typically use with these kinds of Labor issues back and forth. But this is not your typical. This isn't that your typical nineteen ninety. Four nineteen ninety-five type players right. This is a once a this one in a thing and the players have to be able to look past a here now and so does union leadership and I don't see that happening based on what I'm reading based on what I'm hearing. That thought process is much more prevalent among the rank and file but to date. It hasn't been reflected in how the union leadership is handling it and it certainly hasn't been reflected in how The owners of have been handling it. Because these leaks are standard operating procedure and their destructive and I cannot figure out why they can't get into a room and try to work it out that way So coming up. We're going to be interviewing one Ron Washington and one of the players that I'm going to ask him about Is Josh Hamilton? Of course was such a a force for the Rangers in the best of times but has had such troubled history What do you got on Josh Hamilton? Ever met Josh Hamilton. But I do know people that know him. Well as I played college baseball and for spring break every year we went down to clearwater and we trained at the winning inning. The winning getting close. Who Don't know is the place in clearwater Florida. Jack Russell Stadium that Josh Hamilton. Was you know for lack of a better term Rehab back into Major League Baseball and there was a group of people there if you gentlemen in particular but not only kept him on the straight narrow know from a health standpoint but also Help you know. Bring him back from baseball standpoint because obviously he had been so far removed from the game for so long. They told me a story once boss that I will never forget. And that's that after years literally years of Josh Hamilton. Being away from the game of baseball and not playing at all once they were comfortable with where he was from a rehab standpoint. They gave him this sort of the thumbs up. We're GONNA start playing again we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA get on the field. We're GONNA play baseball again. Because that's what he that's what he needed. Obviously his recovery and story they share isn't putting biting t on Home Plate at Jack Russell Stadium and Josh. Hamilton started to take swings and met first round buster. Zion Centerfield is a remarkable story. When people ask me. Who's the most gifted baseball player I ever watched? The Internet question for me. Is Josh Hamilton? Because for someone who who has such a complicated life gone through so much he was so gifted and when you watch him in that Homerun Derby at Yankee stadium given the context of everything that he went through with his life. And you know you hear these sort of anecdotes from people. That knew him. Well this was a this is the kind of talent that comes along very rarely. We're lucky that he harnessed it for just a little bit but obviously there was so much more that he left on the table but I will never forget the story. And then pool halls. I mean, these are huge signing. Now, they got a new manager Osma says more likely to bat poles let's say six or seven whereas I don't think social wanted to move out of the four. All right. And so the idea though, that an awesome. It's you know, didn't do a great job in in Detroit. And so he kinda failed. I wanna save sideways, but I love him because he's a Jew. Can you know, but I get your NGO. During the ju- by the catcher, one of the greatest Holden. Call tales JD Salinger tails. But I mean, I do I do think like there's zero pressure. If you consider the pressure that is on Bryce Harper right now to win in Philly now and Phil Philadelphia's startup season. Really, well, but the pressure on him to win is so great because he's in the same division that he was in Philly fans are not forgiving, and what do you what do you think of the booming where where are you on the the NATs fans last night are correct. Let them have it or why do people total with ownership older players moving around Italy. Correct. Totally correct. Because you know, he could have made slightly less money and stayed in that his entire life to me. There's something special about about style riveta junior jeeter. You know what I'm saying? Yes. Yes. I agree. I'm like, it's almost like an NBA player without tattoos. You say to yourself what I never seen. So raiders them. You know what? I mean. It's like that's to me. There's something really special about staying all the way through because if you are that player and Bryce Harper would've continued to just mash the ball and be great and say, let's make you know, certainly they have bad pitchers. Sure is amazing in Strasberg's amazing. And you know, they have their pitchers and the players. I just would love to have would have loved to have seen him. I'm always the guy who's like stay with your team. So he makes a little less money, but stays the same division. So I I haven't the fan. It's funny because it kind of in a weird way like represents what's happening in the world. Like, you look at like millennials or whatever kids who are out in you know, they graduate. They changed his career and careers by the time, you're thirty five different things that they do by the time thirty which by the way is fine, and it, and I support it because you wanna, you know, wanna be you don't wanna just be stuck somewhere. You don't wanna be? But there's a big. Between. It's not like we said to to Bryce Harper. Hey, man. I know you can play baseball. But you took this job at you know, FedEx. And you gotta do that job. All the time. We're not telling him don't do the thing that you love and your passion. We're saying stay with a fan base that could love you. We felt the same way about pool. So I think, you know, which was like, hey, you could be this generation's STAN Musial, you could be you can did you gain by going? I guess southern California's really nice, but you probably could buy a house there with all the money you hadn't Saint Louis and live there in the off season. It's like what? Yeah. What did he gain from that? When you're in the regular season. How much are you really? Just don't think I don't think people are aware of what the reaction will be now in some cases. I think people don't care. I think every contract Jason were signed. He's like, I don't care. I'm this is what I'm saying. Like, I'm going to be caveman in any what I'm worth with Bryce with rice Harper doing the Philly introduction. And explaining almost let let's go back to FedEx is almost like, hey, I've been working at FedEx. And then at a press conference when he joins ups be like, this is always been my biggest dream to be UPS. Fedex is like, hey where this come on. Wait what? Yeah..
Mike Trout finalizing 12-year, $430 million extension with Angels
"Now as far as trout goes with this deal. This is a no brainer for the angels. Because the angels are about to sign a three billion dollar television contract. They had the money, and I understand the long contracts and baseball usually don't work, but what choice. Do they have Mike trout is that good? You look at his numbers and his career. They are historic and Mike trout, you could honestly argue if you look at his wins above replacement, which is the highest ever in baseball among any active player. You can make a case that might try to kind of underpaid as crazy as that sounds Mike shroud is going to make an average annual value of about thirty six million dollars per year. So not only does he top the largest contract in sports history with the four hundred thirty million, but he also breaks the average annual valued record, which is currently Zach ranked you with the Diamondbacks. He's making thirty four point four million child about thirty six million per year. The contract. We mentioned Bryce Harper last hour trout's deal is more than thirty percent larger than the three hundred thirty million dollar deal that Bryce Harper signed with the Phillies on March second and it best boxers can no Alvarez's deal with zone. That's that new digital streaming service for boxing it beats dissolves deal with Canelo. Alvarez by more than sixty five million dollars. Mike trout is just twenty-seven. He's just entering the private of his career. And we already know. Mike trout is the best player in the game. There's a chance he's going to get even better. And pass it. I'm reading his story now on ESPN dot com. He talks about how trout is already arguably put together the greatest star. Career in the history of baseball. Think about that Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig, Jeremiah GIO, Ted Williams, Willie Mays Mickey Mantle. No player in history has put up more wins above replacement that new stat war that very analytical that people use to compare players do different hours. No player in history has put up more wins above replacement there age twenty six and then trout, sixty four point three. And you know, I've seen a lot of people talk about this contract. Disabled angels. Don't exactly have a great history long-term deals. Remember, they gave pool holes that ten year two hundred forty million dollar deal. Josh Hamilton got five years one hundred twenty five million. Both of those contracts are considered albatross. And rightfully so the difference with trout easy, significantly younger than those guys were when they sign those deals. And the reality is for the angels. The possibility of losing trout is too daunting for them. Right. He's the face of baseball. He's the best player in the game. He's one of the best players ever. How do you not give this guy everything because you need them? And Mike trout, his personality it fits the city of LA it fits Anaheim. You know, he's not on the dodgers. He's not Kershaw. He's not in the media and being covered nonstop like he would have been if he signed with the Phillies that say teamed up with price Harper where he's from. Mike trousers kinda even kill the does this thing and guy's phenomenal. And I think that fits the angels. Really? Well, the other thing is this. The angels are in a position now with that new TV contract where signing trout long-term should not prohibit them from still putting a winning team around. You saw what they did with Shohei Ohtani. They still have players on that team. That are good. Art. Marino has shown the ability to spent three billion dollar TV deal when that kicks in. That is when the angels could start trying to put together a winning team. That is when it all unfold. For my trap because it will be a damn shame. It might trap. Does not get the opportunity. To play in the postseason over the next twelve years. She's been once they got swept in three games that was it. That was by traps postseason, Ron. Two twenty twelve. Has not been back since. So Mike trout as great as he is for him to kinda get the the national spotlight that he deserves. He has to get to the postseason. But baseball's the ultimate team sport. Good as trout is he single handedly. Cannot take you to the playoffs. Aron Texas was winning MVP's. Rangers were finishing in last place. So the angels made the commitment to trout trout signed the deal. And now the commitment needs to be made for the angels to put some pitching around trout for the angels to put a winning team. But as far as this deal this deal to me for trout wasn't oh brainer. He's the best player in the sport. For the next two years. The rumors of him signing in Philly where he's from would have been amped up. And then something that would have been talked about nonstop now. Mike trout us four hundred thirty million dollars. They rip up the final two years of his deal. Give them twelve New Year's

"Remember how. Bad that contract was. For the angels with Josh Hamilton yes I was funny. It ain't it ain't, as bad as the other guy that they signed and I would say I guess right before they signed Josh Hamilton and that's Albert Porthos our pull. Host just had season ending knee. Surgery or is going to. Have it so he's done for the year the. Rest of this season his stats. Are not very good for this season let me pull those backup here he's a to forty five hitter with nineteen home runs and. Sixty, four Rb is he has a two eighty nine on base percentage ooh that's a better on base percentage than he had last year in. The, major leagues when he had a two eighty six on base percentage now last year he, did drive in one hundred one runs and had twenty three home runs. But he's getting paid almost thirty million dollars a year. To do this he has been. An all star for the LA angels he signed in two thousand twelve so after the Rangers lost the World. Series since then he's been in this division and has been. An angel he's made the all star team one time in two? Thousand thousand fifteen he made the all star team by the way his on base percentage as an all-star with them three zero seven this is this is been a bad signing saint louis i know wanted him back but there was no way that they could match the mammoth the deal if he was crazy he can't draw walks i always thought he had a great i you know it'd be a disciplined hitter as he got older but it's just he doesn't strike out a lot in fact he's never had a hundred strikeouts season in his career still with the angels so it's kind of he doesn't draw tons of walks now he used to because his on base percentage in two thousand and nine he led major league baseball with a four forty three on base percentage which is crazy to think that barry bonds in his last year when we kind of thought he was done had a four eighty percentage that was what he had when we were like yeah you know he's not the same anymore you know he's only getting on base forty eight percent of the time so when you look at this he was a nine time all-star for the saint louis Cardinals and three time MVP, in the. National League he's made the, all star team one time in his seven years with the angels and. Here's the bad news, for.

Look, there's been a lot of signs. This kid missed his senior year of school. There's a lot of red flags around this guy. You put him in the room with Josh Gordon. I don't think that's the kind of again, this is not the kind of culture you want surround your players with or else. It's just going to go off the deep end. So look Gordon Smith forty three out of forty, nine games. I mean we spent a lot of time talking about a player that never played. Yeah. And I mean, yeah, forty three hundred forty eight. He obviously was electric when he was out there, but twenty fourteen is very far removed from two thousand eighteen year. I was there. I mean, that was the year I was there and he was there and he was great. And you know, we had a chance to trade them, the San Francisco, we turned it down because we thought he could turn the corner. And one of the people that were spending time with them said, he's never gonna turn the corner. He was pretty adamant about it, and I wish he can and I hope he has and I'm glad that he's had, you know, whatever reason he's missing camp to get himself. Straight is great. And I hope Josh Ken come back, but he couldn't do it a Baylor, and he couldn't do it at Utah able to do to Cleveland. And so you know, you're counting on somebody that can't really do it. You've got a lot of vested in them. It's kind of going to be very difficult. It kind of reminds me and I hope that you know there can be some sort of good Beaumont, you know, in where he finds a little bit of a home, but you know, Josh Hamilton in baseball, he was going through a lot of issues with these sorts of things and an addiction, and in all of the all of that stuff was going on. And he found sort of a home with the Rangers for a little while where he kinda got us head clear and things were going well in the field and off the field and. And you hope that Josh Gordon will have some sort of clarity at some point where maybe he can find that in Cleveland. And obviously that's what we're all hoping for. Let's get to some probably the biggest news that's going around the NFL as far as you know, contract talk and what's going on with that. And that is Khalil Mack, obviously in Oakland with the raiders and Aaron Donald down with the LA Rams both of those guys. You know, we talked about this a little last week, but basically air Donald is going to set the market for the defensive tackles, and then that is going to intern set the market for for Khalil Mack with what he can do with the Oakland Raiders as a d. n. and what money he wants to get guaranteed from them. What sort of the update here in what were you hearing the Murray? I hope it's going to be much of an update. I think that Khalil Mack is just going to have to play on the tender because I don't think deals coming for them. I, I just don't think that's in the doesn't make sense for the raiders to do that. The raiders have to kind of get something straightened out with their own team and with MAC, I'm not sure that that's that's going to be part of the equation. And. Donald. I mean, let's need came out today and said, we're in the same ballpark the same zip code. I don't know really what that means. Obviously, he's gonna make over eighteen or nineteen million. And then you know if he does that if he gets paid a quarterback money, do you think my man now I know they're completely different positions, but now we know that back our boy first billers open up negotiations with the giants..

"My name is Josh Hamilton. I am the writer of this episode and I'm Chris Palmer was the episode director on this one. All right. So everybody at home, make sure that your net flicks is all queued up to all zeros and we're gonna hit play in three, two one play. And we're off and we're often running. What is this Netflix company? I hear they're going to be pretty big. Yeah, I think they got some good ideas. This looks like a good idea. They do the thing where they send you DVD's. Oh, that's. Like the library, really? Yeah. So Josh, you're seeing beforehand that. You sort of came onto the episodes directed here, sort of later in the in the not Josh. Sorry, Chris? Oh, yeah. This this is my first episode and I kind of inherited. It was started originally Joakim, Lauren and review. Head directed directed in the rough stage and I came on toward the end. There's a few rewrites and things. I think they added some Pige backstory to the. That's right. I remember. And so they'll there was some changes that that had to go through and helped out with that. You made it better. Just kidding. He would have been awesome original. It was. Terrible. So this episode kind of like this is part of it. It's to the second part of a two part, and we were trying to do that like early on. It's we're trying to do these kind of maybe like some stand-alones and then maybe some two parters three partners. So this one is like, I think our other than the first three. I attempted a two parter. Was that sort of something you know going into this first season because it was going to be on Netflix? It was. You didn't have necessarily the, you have to end the episode properly. You can just kind of keep it going. And then the next episode we'll pick up right where we're ends in early on, it was kind of like cliffhangers are good. Yeah, you know, and it was like, oh, good. That's awesome. Yeah. So just rolls right in the next one because we've worked on, I've worked on series where it's kind of like some of them are more serialized, but they really want a lot of standalone episodes. This sort of like just saying, please make it serialised in with cliffhangers, puts methods together. As you're saying like this one. Sort of it picks up and then it. It starts this whole sort of saga. The ball marrow. We got the two zany characters paired together here, which was kind of cool in Crandon honk on their own adventure. Yeah, it is fun to have like kind of these fun side characters group up and to see what kind of whacking they get into. This was kind of interesting because they went to heiress and they've explored those those aliens on heiresses a Rusians or whatever. And this is our first time we're like, the team goes to another planet and is like, because this is what we wanted to the voltron series. They help a lot of people along the way of their journey. And so this is like the first time where they go to bomb era, they're just going to get a crystal, but there's more to it than that. Now these Marins are like involved and they went to help them out. So it's kind of like we got the explorer different alliens and help them. This roster rock cows, rot cows. Is that what they are? I didn't design. I love them. I love that dog too. Huckabee'll rot cows. Yeah. This is I think around the first time that we start to see that Pige is not who pitched says that she was unsee that backstory of her. Yeah, can't exactly remember a while ago, but so she she's tells the audience finds out. She's a girl and then believe it's the sewed Shiro finds out and just okay. That's yeah. Okay. Gotcha. At the very end. And he calls her Katie, right? Yeah. And then. And then you know, we notice backstory about her parents. She's looking for her parents and her dad and her brother. And so I think in the episode before she's a little bit like, you know, I got, I'm going to leave the team. I'm gonna get outta here. And so this is sort of exploring, you know what's so important to her and these episodes visa flashbacks which we did put in later..

You communicated, with others you'd write on the walls because there, was no like Facebook right there's no message no magic The wall right there? Was, text messaging now so. Again you want, it to be public and people to see going. Down, memory lane there did you ever write like subtle. Facebook status to take shots at people and whatnot or no you never did though I did. That all the time okay like petty stuff shocking invite. Me to your house you got Facebook mess Facebook. Status the next morning shocking. To to imagine that you could approach things that. Way and such a, petty petty fashion you'd never think it now glad. I'm sitting. Down six one seven seven seven. Nine seven 93.7.

"Show and be entertaining then it's not going to be as good last year it was phenomenal it was and every you know you remember josh hamilton with what he did that a long time ago you ended up not even winning that homerun derby but he had they changed the rules about then i think they've done some a good job in changing the rules because josh hamilton hit thirty home runs off but then the none of it carried over and so then he got into the final and he didn't do as well and he didn't win allman derby the but that was kind of that didn't really matter at that point he did provide a lot of uis and is and all of that and so you know we talked about it i think i get the idea that you should market some other players to try and promote them it's not all about mike trout every year i think people do know who might trout is so to get some other guys in there is in bad but i think this year's field is definitely lacking some some marquee values trout declined apparently remember we started the week it's been a long week you said that yesterday mice long week we started the week what did we talk about who is our big topic of discussion blake snell number the blake snell snubbed the national tragedy that was blake snell not getting picked for the all star game i assumed that by now he was going to get named as a replacement he has not maybe we'll still i know zack greinke he's going now replacing john lester the thought was the justin verlander was gonna need a replacement 'cause he's pitching on sunday i don't know what's going on with that but blake's no pitch last night did not pitch like an all star he lasted only three innings gave up five hits walked three gave up three runs he's still twelve and four with a two point two seventy are those are pretty much all star numbers but the snell snub continues is it possible he could lead the al and yarra and not be an all star well i don't think he's second second behind berlin well then forget it no he talked about it we didn't quite understand what happened he got the the rules worked against him because you know there was a group in mostly based on player vote that pick five starters and they were all really good two of them went against each other last night severino kluber i think it was ver lander sale and gary calls so they were all really good and then by the time it got to the mlb office to pick out the remaining roster they had all these teams that didn't have a representative pick yet and we talked about the kind of antiquated and silly rule that every team's going to be represented in the all star game and so that that hurt blake snell though he could have gotten ahead of trevor bauer but they picked trevor bauer maybe because he says really weird things on twitter and otherwise like what did he say the other day he'll never sign a law a multiyear contract and he won't have a kid he's forty five because he said he won't sign a one more longer than a year because he made a bet with somebody and if you loses the bet here's gets shot in the daddy bags with a paintball gun from like ten feet away can't make this stuff up we do like you when something other than the usual cliches so we do have trevor bauer to thank for that i don't think that baseball is going to adopt the mookie betts suggestion of doing away with the homerun derby and stats would you tune in for seen players throw into a barrel i don't know that doesn't really do it for me skills competitions i'm generally in support of i love the ones that they used to do with the nfl players back in the.

"Is still i think if anything tamer version of what actual middle school is it's the irony of of portraying a thirteen year old's life that when you portray a thirteen year old's life honestly they're not allowed to you know they can't legally buy ticket to see it by themselves just like very funny for teaching kids these words or anything you're right but i was thinking if i was really cool parents like i would take my daughter to see eighth grade right because like hey i'm cool enough to appreciate this is what's happening out there and we can have a real conversation about it but you're right more often than not parents are going to hear this you can't do this it's too it's too bringing your kid is might will be fun and a little awkward it will be no more awkward than your actual day to day life with your kid so used to it josh hamilton terrific plane the dad in the movie what i liked about it is ladybird terrific film and often focuses on the the mother daughter relationship although tracy letts is very good as the dab laurie metcalf insertion ronin that's the heart of the movie what i'd like to but this father daughter story and the mother is not vilified she's just mentioned in passing that when mom left and you'll get that dialogue too late in the film in the best of the movie that fireplace in is so beautiful and so move over should've thank you was that a conscious attempts to listen let's not put people in boxes and that will say why did mom leave or what happened she's not here and let's just focus on on dad and daughter which maybe is a relationship we don't see enough in movies yeah we'll part of it was this is only five days in her life and wanting to be honest to the amount of information that does come up in a five days.
