"When this comes out probably still fairly recently that i think was weirdly under promoted. I don't know why who didn't do more to get the word i mean. It's an original hulu movie that they produce. It wasn't something that they bought. you know. That was a studio cast off. Yeah it's a really really fun teen comedy. I mean it's certainly in the vein of of book smart or unprecedented which was another movie. That kinda went under the radar last year. Those hbo original but these two teenage girls one of whom is kind of nerdy and outstanding and the other is a bit more rebellious played by coup. Verma and Victoria morales most basically newcomers here. And they just have this great tradition of any of those. Whether you talk about book smart or unprecedented or super bad or harold and kumar and the filmmakers from the harold and kumar movies are producers on this so okay certainly bring some of that but just that great chemistry. It's real it's funny and raunchy but it's also serious. I mean the characters end up going on this road trip to find plan b the morning after pill after sunny the coup verma's character has had an ill advised sexual encounter with someone in needs this pill and so it's dealing with some serious issues Obviously it's set in south dakota where they go to a pharmacy and the pharmacist is allowed to deny them. And but it doesn't just become this big message movie. I mean it's always focus on the character's distinctly these particular characters not just like archetypes or whatever these people their lives and it's always funny even when serious stuff happened so it's been really well reviewed by people who saw it so hopefully more people will see it and if you have hulu i mean you know it's right there so watch it. We're planning on watching it. I think tonight either tonight or tomorrow. I'm very much looking forward to it and I found out about it from david wayne of all he posted about it. Oh well i'm glad someone like. That is promoting. yeah deserves it. Yeah awesome well josh. What's going on awesome movie here. We are. I think as of this we were in our nineteen sixty seven season. You know it is sexy for like five minutes and then it's gone it's done that's really well put thank you. I mean we have discussed these things before but that like that valve olympic boom. It's a if only if only that up so recorded. Yeah that'd been it's okay. That's what the applause for. "Like what is this. I mean that's that's another way that like you know traditional or stop motion effects You know bring out more creativity than just cgi because yeah you're right. The more recent stuff has been kind of the same kind of thing over and over again but back then those all seem so unique and different even if they were like similar characters and settings right yeah he had the most recent thing i saw was like a promotional video for a custom guitar then made adam jones. I don't know if you saw this. And it was accompanied by an instrumental that was essentially like a new tool song just with no vocals and nine minutes long or whatever and is just look like a screensaver. Not in a positive way. I'll still watch the long rumored by tool fans feature length Tool movie music thing which probably will never happened. I mean but you know. I could still dream for it. Yeah i watch that too i mean. Of course yeah. That sounds heard anything about that. Sounds cool thing that we all used to talk about in the early two thousands. But that's a long time ago so well. The finished puzzle for come. True includes a nightmare on elm street. Three dream warriors devs maniac possessor an antiviral inception the cell silent hill. It follows eternal sunshine of the spotless. Mind science of sleep on rails video games and tool music videos. So josh is there any any major things. We didn't quite get to well going through the pieces Well i just wanna give a shout out to a movie that i couldn't include because i haven't seen but i think has a lot of relevance which is rodney ashes film the nightmare documentary about Sleep paralysis than i think Sort of reenact that experience in a horror style and the shadow man figure in this movie is clearly a reference to the figure that people tend to see during sleep paralysis. That's not something that i've experienced personally. But that's like the common thing that people mention i have once and it was scary as hell. Yeah so again. I think maybe you don't wanna watch that movie. I don't know. And i haven't seen it. But i've read enough about it to know that that's got to be an influence on this. I would think so. Yeah the only other thing. I wanted to bring up and your film. History is better than mine so i don't know maybe maybe you saw the connection but any significance to the weekend at bernie's terminator posters. Would you say mean. Terminator is kind of see. Maybe a little clear sci-fi yeah. I mean i don't know i guess like i actually never seen weekend at bernie's which is an important part of any film history education. Of course. i'm sure it'll come up on awesome movie. You're at some point. Yeah i mean we have. The you know the climax of the movie where she's like sleepwalking and they have to guide her. And i suppose that's almost like carrying along bernie's corpse stretching their just correct the case josh. I think yeah. I think you did it. That is a perfect place to end this. Because we figured this movie out for sure. Okay well josh. Is there another movie you saw recently. You'd like to recommend to our listeners. Sure completely different. I'm going to recommend a movie that that i know you've seen and i think you're not really that into and most critics seemed to have not been into and i had sort of low expectations because of that but i really loved and that is french exit from as azel jacobs that is I mean i don't know as of when this comes out. Probably still just playing in theaters but We'll be available on vod. I imagine within the next few weeks. And it's i can understand why some people were not into it. It's kind of excessively quirky in some ways. But it just had this dry of certes sense of humor. That really really worked for me. Michelle pfeiffer is amazing in it as this sort of socialite. Nukes city socialite who discovers that her fortune has disappeared and she doesn't know how to live without lots and lots of money and event ends up. G moves to paris to stay in a friend's apartment along with her son played by lucas hedges. Who and they have this kind of unhealthily close relationship but it's this talking about whimsical about michelle. Gandara it's this actually quite whimsical witty comedy about their relationship and about this this woman sort of search for her identity with the lack of money and her husband who has had died. And it's got these funny magical realist touches. The husband has been reincarnated as their cats and just a lot of really entertaining supporting performances. And i mean i. I laughed and smiled and was captivated the whole way through so if people have seen reviews. They're not that enthused. I hope they'll give it another look again. It'll probably be on. Vod fairly soon. So french exit is peck. Yeah i like to. I think a lot. More than maybe i lead on and i'm almost tempted to rewatch it. And say hey. Let's do an episode on it. Because i know that you really loved it and i think maybe it deserves another shot from. I hope so. I mean from you and from anyone because like i said i you know as we have discussed whether it qualifies but for me this is my favorite movie of twenty twenty one so far it was not released in two thousand twenty except to critics like you and me who got. Yeah so it's at the top of list at the moment. Yeah nothing makes sense anymore. J world that's right. We sure are well josh. Why don't you tell people what you got going on. What do i got going on. Well i got awesome movie year in the thick of or maybe reaching the end depending on when this comes out of our season on the films of two thousand and three so. That's been a lot of fun talking about those movies. Including multiple. David rosen favorites. So that's cool so we got that still going at awesome movie year dot com and awesome movie year on facebook and instagram and awesome movie pod on twitter. So check that out wherever you listen to. Podcasts my stuff. Josh bell hates everything. dot com. Josh bell hates everything on facebook and it signal bleed on twitter. My reviews in all sorts of different places All kinds of Collated there you my best so Check out all that stuff if you wanna see me or hear me or read me talking about movies. All of the above even dream you josh within the next frontier. Can i get movie reviews into people's dreams. Then i'll really be you know taking things to another level. We'll all be looking.

The Vigil (Featuring Josh Bell)
"Talk the vigil okay. Josh bell is back with us on the podcast josh. How's it going man. It's going all right. How are you. I'm alright watching a ton of movies. As i know you are always including including this weird one. The vigil this is. This is something i found out about through you through your review and immediately spoke to me. Of course i do love. Jewish demons are. You are jewish demon. Maybe that's right. Thank you josh. I'm putting that as a poll quo. My next prided right. Where did you find out about. It was something that like a- did you know this was coming. Or is it something just kinda popped up out of nowhere. I mean it's a it's an ifc released. So i get you know press releases and she'll rules from their pr folks. So i knew that it was coming. I think it had played a number of festivals. Maybe even going all the way back to playing some person festivals. I think it was it was doing that circuit for a while. So i may or may not have heard about it before then but certainly when i saw it as an upcoming ifc release. It intrigued me and And i pitched the review and got the chance to write about it. Which was cool and i certainly also i'm interested in this whole jewish horror angle. Which is not a common thing but is a thing which will talk about more. There's so many horror movies now. It seems like every week. There's like you know so many horror movies that come out and so many deal with you know either you know possession or some form of religious iconography so like to get this jewish angle definitely at least makes it something interesting and different right. I mean and i yeah certainly i. I write about a ton of horror movies whether it's full reviews like this or in my little. Vod column that. i write And it seems like in this past year with people in the lockdown. And whatever. And i i don't know if it's The world is scary and people want to see that reflected in movies or they want to watch movies where the scary stuff ends. But certainly there have been a lot of horror movies. And but i think this one does kind of rise above with the way that it approaches the subject matter in this in this unique way even though it does also do a lot of very familiar horror. Movie things sure. Yeah and and that score gets very very loud at times as many horror movies do it does. And there's some some some jump moments or whatever and i didn't feel like they were cheap necessarily. I felt like they fit with. What the character that. You're you're in the perspective of this main character as he's in these circumstances but i can understand if you felt like this was too many basic horror movie things and not enough to set it apart. I think you didn't like this movie as much as i did. Oh no i. I did like it but maybe not as much as you did because yeah it does it does have a lot of those tropes in it but i i do very much appreciate when a horror movie can at least try to do something different. You know. it's this movie definitely does and We'll get into a lot of those differences as were going through this thing. Why don't we jump into puzzle pieces. What you for your first one. Well my first one is Sort of as we were just saying sort of the bad version of this movie called the possession from two thousand twelve. That is a completely forgettable. Generic horror movie. That i had to look up on wikipedia to remember. Virtually anything about. Even though i saw it in the theater But it also involves this jewish mysticism and jewish the as the source of its horror. And i remember watching it and thinking. This movie is really dumb but at the same time i appreciate that it's dumb. It's using a different source material to be tom. It involves it involves a book. Which is i think. The the sort of jewish demon or whatever that people are most aware of An an a box that Is a thing that contains this demon and of course the dumb characters. They buy the box at a garage sale and get some some. Not good stuff happens and cure. Ascetic is is the main star of it. And jeffrey dean. Morgan and i don't remember for sure. But i don't think the characters are even jewish. I think it's just their random people and they picked up. You know just like in a weird way like the exoticism of an older horror movie. Which were they would buy like a more. We're told them from africa or would have a demon in it and it would mess with them so it's not a good movie but i think it points to the way that you could do this poorly just kind of reach out and i don't know if the filmmakers behind that film or jewish at all verses This filmmaker who get someone who went to rabbinical school and he's got this very strong jewish background So i can't recommend it. But i think i i wonder if he maybe saw that movie or looked to that movie and thought okay. Here's a mainstream movie with some of these ideas and that is a way to think that maybe people will accept my movie. Yeah no absolutely. I don't remember if i ever actually saw that one. I probably did at some point. But i think it's interesting though just to speak to the the fact that the characters possibly weren't even jewish like it's funny that us jews like. I don't even think we know this dark. Like creepy side of judaism. Because we just don't really pay attention to that stuff. It seems like at least most of us. I think i mean maybe it's just because there's so many more horror movies about christian mythology. But i feel like the demonic side of christianity is a lot more prominent even an stream christians so i'm just looking and and and to be fair to the possession of the main characters. I don't think our jewish but they do eventually consult a rabbi played by modest yahoo of course okay these are things i didn't even remember but i'm just thinking we competed. How can you forgive modest. Yahoo i know that's up to him. I mean he's i mean obviously if they're like we need a jewish pop culture guy who you know. He seems like the right one to go to. I suppose

"All so. Josh bell is back with us again. Josh. how's it going. Oh not too bad. How about you. I'm doing great i am. I am entering the second month of two thousand twenty one with the same vigor. I had at the beginning of two thousand twenty which is not much bigger. No i was gonna say none right. Yeah i'm trying. I'm trump trying to wake up and get excited. I mean there are lots of good movies and and the reason i say aside from being true. Is that this movie. Were about to talk about invigorated me a little bit. Because i loved it so damn much all right. Yeah i liked it too and this was a movie that people kind of slept on. I guess a little mia did when it came out in theaters last year. I remember the week that it opened. I had heard nothing about it. I just saw the listings on fandango and on movie and i assumed it was some kind of a small no budget. Nothing production that We're getting suddenly opening in theaters. These days because theaters will take anything right and it is a small production but it's definitely not On that kind of scale that i was imagining it so it was was an unexpected delight. Yeah absolutely and i was looking forward to it for quite a while. I mean obviously. I hadn't heard about it either until it got that little theatrical run but then it's like unlike a and we were just talking about this before we started recording about saint maude but like a unlike a lot of movies where they get these little theatrical runs since pandemic but then already have the od release plans like a week or two weeks or at most a month later or something like that. This movie had absolutely nothing on the horizon. I was checking like over and over again and then all the sudden it was like. Oh it's finally out yes. They gave it the full traditional window. They played in theaters for a decent amount of time. A normal amount of time and then it was gone for what we used to think of. As the normal amount of time he'll it was Said finally out. on vod. And i don't know if it's i think it's sony who released. This may be one of the only ones who are still sticking with those windows. I think they might have done that for a couple of the other movies that they released last year. Like yellow rose. And that richard jenkins one where he worked at a fast restaurant The last shift. I think that was called sounds interesting. I haven't seen that. I didn't i saw rose which was which was nice. It's worth seeing but all of those were theatrical releases. That like this one. I think maybe did get the full window of time. So i don't know how that's working out for them but whatever everyone's just trying what they can try basically but Well hawaii don't we start getting into some puzzle pieces here. We'll get into more of what. This movie is all about along the way. But what do you have your first puzzle piece for the kid detective. Well my first one is probably the most obvious one that was mentioned in reference to this movie and almost every review. It's a mystery. Team has a very very similar premise Although treated much more comedic lee. And it's a it's a group of characters who used to be these kid detectives. They solved crimes when they were kids. They had a little club and now they're all grown up but They're still fixated on the idea of solving crimes and In that movie they treat it as if they sort of haven't grown up like they're still very immature and naive and they don't understand the way. The world works Which is not the case here in the kid. Detective i mean he may be kind of holding onto his past glory but he's clearly an adult that understands adore things But that's part of this sort of the source of the comedy in that movie that they and then they then end up in very cd case that they're trying to solve right goes against all of their weird wholesome values and it's a fun movie. I feel like it's one of those movies because it comes from a comedy sketch group. That probably would have been a great comedy sketch and his. Maybe not quite a great feature film is a lot of fun stuff and donald glover is the most famous member of that group. Who of course went on to do a lot of bigger things but he's he's funny so i'm i i would think that you probably thought of this one as well. Surprisingly i've never seen it. But i saw it mentioned in a lot of the reviews and actually planning on watching it this weekend. I'm like really excited to see this movie. It sounds Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. It's totally up your alley. I feel like you know with with all of the things that we've gotten from you on awesome movie year about your your picks that we end up watching. This is one hundred percent within that realm awesome awesome. Well i'll over my first pick. This is the first thing that kind of came to mind for me. Once i started watching the movie and shane black's the nice guys. Which is a movie as you know. I absolutely love. I think is probably the funniest movie of the last ten years. And it's just just as great example of private is just not being great at their job but kind of fumbling their way through it and saving the day and succeeding anyway and the jokes in this movie and the kid detective. It is a very dry movie. And i could see where some people Would you know kind of not like really. Dig into the particular brand of comedy. But there's so much funny in this if it's on your wavelength i guess like there's so many quick little bits and pieces and like there's visual gags. There's big swing for the fences jokes. There's just a lot of funny baked into this movie and it's just a matter of getting on its wavelength to like really find all of it and i feel like that's kind of in that shame. Black tradition of just quick zippy one liners and little just so many little things just baked into it for you to find and i just love love that kind of thing. Yeah that's a very. I mean i. I liked that movie a lot too. It's it's a lot of fun. And i'm not sure if the kid detective is quite as quick witted and black movie. I mean that's okay. That's not a problem. It's like you said it's a bit drier i. It's not as fast paced and zippy with the jokes or As a shame. Black movie but Definitely i can. I can see that That link there and the nice guys is great. Oh yes so good. And i will say that a lot of the things i said are going to work the way into some other puzzle pieces. But why don't we move on to your next piece though all right. Well yeah i think. I i also eventually came up with a bunch of things that we're.

"Seen a movie. Recently you'd like to recommend or listeners. I will yeah. I wanted to make sure not to overlap because we're about to do this. Big top ten movies of the year episode. And i didn't just want to repeat myself but i'm going to pick a movie that won't quite make my list but i did watch fairly recently as sort of catch up for the year and i think dave that you watched as well Is called swallow with haley. minute which is is really good. I mean it may not be in my top ten. But i definitely recommend it. She's great in that movie as this. This sort of disaffected housewife. Who develops this condition where she swallows Not edible objects and sort of this manifestation of her suburban on weei and yes. She's she's really good in it. It creates a very. It's not a horror movie but it creates very disturbing atmosphere And i think it kind of wraps up wraps itself up maybe a little too neatly at the end but as a character study of this woman. It's quite effective. So i liked it and i know it's it's now streaming on showtime if people have that and if you i'd heard about it earlier in the year and you know got to it eventually so swallow. Yeah no i. I was glad that i finally caught up with that. I think this movie is not going to be in that top. Ten list may may just Fall below there. But we'll we'll get our thoughts in on this episode. At least we'll have mentioned in the closing of two thousand twenty. Yeah this is. This is an interesting movie. I didn't love it. I've as i've like been putting together my puzzle piece lists and stuff like that and just kind of reflecting on 'em like it wasn't it wasn't that bad and i'm glad we're gonna be talking about it. I think it's It's definitely movie we're talking about and there should be some good pieces but i did want to ask you though upfront. Was this a movie. Obviously we just kind of randomly were like it will. Let's do the midnight sky but was this a movie that you were like really looking forward to and it was coming out now not right now i mean i wasn't i wasn't like oh i. Hey i can't believe. I'd have to see that movie or anything but i think george clooney as a director is not particularly. I mean there's some decent movies but he doesn't have a super great track record and the other thing is he doesn't have a particularly distinctive style. So there's nothing like. Oh the new george clooney movie. I know how that's going to be and like. I really enjoy what he does. So i'm going to look forward to that. I think he's a good actor And i like scifi movies. It was based on a book that got a lot of acclaim and it looked kind of intriguing to me but it wasn't at the top of my list of things that i wanted to see. I did however go out of my way to see this movie at the drive in when is available in part because i was excited because the drive in here hasn't been showing that many net flicks films. Even though some of the indoor theaters here have been. I would have loved to go see manque for example a big screen or Which we could have done if i wanted to go to an indoor theatre here. But they didn't have it at the drive in. So i saw that they were playing it and i thought oh. Yeah i'm just gonna i'm gonna go check that out because i didn't want to go see christmas chronicles to drive in which they played for many weeks or so. I was excited kind of about that. And i felt like this was a good movie to see on a big screen and i almost wonder if my slightly more favourable response to it had to do with getting to see it that way possible. I don't know so no. It was one of those movies that i think in the in the long list of what's coming up at the end of the year that is Prestigious and being pushed for awards a kind of got lost there. I think but Once it was once it was out. I thought you know what i wanna see at night. I actually went. I ended up going on the last day before it closed. Because i wanted to make sure to see it before it laughed and obviously there wasn't i don't think it did a huge business Three three other cars there with me. Maybe an and one of them left halfway through the movie so kind of movies so it's the kind of thing that like in the in the in the old times when you go to an indie theater in some unsuspecting people would think oh george clooney. He's a big handsome movie star. Let's go see that movie and then halfway through. What is this slow space nonsense. I needed a nap. I think what you're saying though About george clooney. The director is absolutely right. And and it sucks. I honestly it bugs me. Because i like him so much as an actor and just as like this personality i mean. He's one of the one of the few movie stars who feel like i'm rooting for away. When he does direct a movie when he does try to expand on what he does and yeah. It's definitely a lot more miss than hit for sure. Yeah and he's obviously dedicated to it. It's not like sometimes there's actors and they direct one movie and you get the impression that they thought like. I'm going to try this out. And then they don't really follow through with it but this has got to be his sixth or seventh movie as a director right. And i'm i'm sure he's planning more so it seems like he would have at some point developed a particular perspective or sil- or something and It doesn't have. I mean this movie doesn't feel like similar to other george clooney direct do now. He's in any way not at all every one of them seems like i almost wonder if you go back through them all if you'd find influence from whoever he had recently worked with you know the previous years. Yeah i think that's something that's come up a lot. The idea that he works with these big directors because he's a big movie star and they kind of rub off on him and he thinks oh you know what i want to make a movie like the coen brothers i wanna make. It'll be like steven soderbergh. I wanna make a movie like alphonso not to our right. And he's george clooney and he's famous so he gets money and he gets his pick of projects. I i don't know how hot this was a project but again it was. Based on a very acclaimed novel it was written the screenplay by mark smith who wrote the revenue in to certainly a hot screenwriter. I could see this as a project that had like a lot of interest from different directors. But george clooney's george.
