"And congratulations, you know, you may not have been the favorite or even in the conversation, but in the end, you're going to have a banner that your kids can come to the now while say the real, but they can now come to bally's in Paris next year. Look up and say, that's my dad. That's gonna be cool. It's pretty cool. I just think about that. I think I'm gonna make sure that both the girls come out this year to see it. You're gonna have to get the picture. And what I mean by that is, eventually, you're gonna be playing one day, and it's gonna be in the background. Right. Like, so you'll be at a table nearby and it'll be right there. I never thought that I haven't thought of that. How can I hug you and I were playing? I forgot what game it would probably do to 7, because I was there. I don't play many mixed games. And so it's probably just a 7. And like right behind him there was his picture. And I was like, huh, hold on a second. Click. And so I did it with Joe hashim once. I've done it with Greg Merck. It's just hysterical. It eventually happened. So the minute it has to have someone take a picture. It's going to be a fun troll to be playing and playing in a pot and just when somebody's in the tank and just like remind them, hey man. You see that? That should be a fun show. Maybe another good one is that it fill is sitting there and you're in the background. You can take your picture like that. There you go. That is going to be used a lot that there will be a lot of there will be a lot of tweets with my band out there next year. Well, congratulations Josh like I said, what a great showing an incredible rhyme. Really a run for the ages in a run that all of us dream about, right? You win one, you win two all of a sudden, you kind of look around and go, I guess I gotta go for it. Let's go, you know? And then you end up getting in and what a great story. And from hoping to win another to not only winning in two, but now winning player of the year is congratulations Josh, what a great run. I appreciate it, man. Thanks for having me. "Deal. That would have been a last time. That's true. That's true, but he was a harder route. So I give you even more credit, so. Oh, my God. And that I'm related to Kevin Bacon by 6°. So you definitely did around the mountain there instead of through it. So I actually don't have a problem with this twist this time. Oh my God. It was a long week for survivor fans because we had all been teased that there was going to be a big twist and there were a lot of spoiler alerts out there that it was going to be the worst thing ever to happen on survivor and I'm like, oh my God, as bad as this season's been, I can't even imagine what it's going to be. And then when I watched it and they explained it and I'm like, you know what? Not a fan of it, but I don't think it's a big deal because everybody had an opportunity to participate if they wanted to. And so there was a choice to participate or not and you had a base hit on just kept talking about your place in the game. But I think it was also on how well you thought you could handle that little balance thing. And then even after that, you still had opportunity the person that ended up getting voted out had an opportunity to protect himself or herself. I'm not trying to spoil anything here. With some of the other 97s with the throne in the game. So I actually didn't have too much of a problem with it. All right, well that's good. Like I said, if everyone has the opportunity, that's one thing, but you know, when someone just randomly, 'cause it's funny, I woke up this morning to like three stories in my news feed of people just absolutely saying this is it. I'm done with survivor or this is ridiculous and survivor was good because people survived on their own merits. There weren't immunity idols like they introduced in 2013 hidden ones. And so everyone was just ripping mad about this was like the final straw for a lot of people. It was just and here's a tie into poker as well too. We'll talk about this a little bit more and then later in the show too. You know, if you were a poker purist, you want to watch unadulterated poker on television, right? You don't want the cutout 44 minute plus commercials. ESPN thing, right? Right. Or the wpt. That all worked to make poker as big as it is because it brought in people who are poker periods, right? Right. So there is a place for it, not saying that. But if you're a poker purist, you just want to watch that 8 hour long tournament. Without any cuts and just watch it, right? So and I think that's what the problem is this year is you get survivor purists like me, they Bloomberg's co host is fantastic, by the way, much smarter than David Bloomberg is. We're just like, we're not getting to see enough of the actual gameplay. And it comes a week after one of the best episodes ever. When it was all gameplay and people talking and the carnival games and stuff so I think that's it. So you know again it's that proverbial who you're trying to appeal to in season 41 that people have been with you forever and who are probably dwindling. Or are you trying to reinvent some excitement to get more people in to keep the show going? And this will get to one of the items that are coming up after the next item and it's sort of similar where mainstream poker and stuff like that and do you want any more do you want? So this is very similar to that argument. So we'll continue with that in a minute. But I just thought it was interesting that the money all problem came up, and I always think of 21, I think of, you know, I just think of that movie as proving that there are games that they think are luck, but they're actually skill. And that's why poker and all that. And then, of course, that guy who started the whole MIT slash Harvard team or whatever blackjack team was at your table at the World Series you didn't even know it. So good opportunity to make fun of you one last time. Kim a space he was on my table, I would have known, but so here's the thing I haven't seen 21. I have no idea what you're talking about. So now I'm going to have to go research it, which is exciting. I'm going to learn something later today. Oh, man. That's pretty good movie. It was pretty fun. Yeah. Yeah, you should watch it. All right, as he often does Daniel nagra, who finished third in this year's World Series. The player of the year race has detailed his financials from this year's series. Kid poker catched in 18 of the 55 of NC entered waiting 1,451,797.68, but after deducting the 1 million 52,773 thousand I messed that up big time. It's not looking with a profit or $399,024 and 68 cents or a 37.9% return on an investment just slightly better than what you could do with crypto and Robinhood. This one was of course don't include what he wrote backers, which he also detailed in his post or any non buying cost playing cards such as food. So this is very interesting because one of the things that when you first jumps out is raw numbers, you think, holy cow, he committed a million point 5 almost .05 to entering events. But it's not really necessarily true. If he had success early on in one of $400,000 payout, he may have said, okay, now I'll enter 5 more events. So there's no real way to know how many a lot of people have a budget. And they say, okay, we're going to enter this, but if I win this, we'll enter more. Some people do that. Some people don't have those stipulations on there. So there's no real way of doing it. But it's a fantastic return on his investment. You know, 38% for a month's work. You know, that's massive. I mean, just think about it. If there's 30 days in a month, I mean, it's crazy how much is daily income would have been. So pretty phenomenal. But at the same time, it's scary to think that he paid a $1 million in buy ins, you know? Crazy. Yeah, so a couple things here. I mean, he made as much as the president of the United States makes me a year in a few months. So that's pretty cool. To me, again, without doing the math until you see the 37.9% return on my wow, that is a hard way of making it easy living, which is what we've always said about being a program now, right? All the success and he only stay at home 400,000 and I think again, I think believe this before backers. And like that just doesn't seem worth it. I know. Now, obviously he's a pro so he played 55 events or 80, I think 89 events. More of a kind of the online ones, I think. So that's pretty healthy schedule there. And I'm sure there was some weekend warrior like us that flew out there and played one $500 by an event one and who has a nauseating return on investment right, right? Because they want to play the one event and did really well with it. So, but when this is your business, I mean, you have to play. You mean I have my 55 events. I think Josh aria just posted his stuff to you. I think he played 37 events if I read it correctly. Somewhere in the 30s. So and they're going to play a good 20 events more than he did. And still come up short to the player of the year race. So the other thing is just how exhausting that is. Yes. And really, I don't think if people are listening and not playing any World Series events, I don't think you realize how exhausting it is. Obviously, hopefully you make part of the united but even making it past the dinner break like you did, it could be exhausting. But especially if it's two day events though. And don't even get started on the main event, which is super cool. To even fathom playing 55 events..

"The planet. I'm Chris consensus. And I'm Scott walk Happy Thanksgiving. Gobble gobble. Gobble gobble, how's it going? Turkey day. You know, I always start off this day by rewatching clips of the plane strains and automobiles and that's my favorite one is the rental car. Scene where? The Ferris Bueller secretary. Never saw it. Spoiler alert, please. You've never seen plain streets in that movie? I've seen excerpts of it, you know, like you have you're talking about what you do. Like what you do every Thanksgiving is what I do. You know, what I've seen over my lifetime, I've never actually watched the movie. Comprehend this information. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I saw your little Facebook post about it today, and I thought, yep. I can't really don't know what he's talking about. Trump is me, you're gonna do this, 'cause you come to all this stuff, wait, wait, like making a murderer? Yeah, yeah. That's probably been framed for step in other murders by the time the rest of us have watched. You need to make some time today. I promise you you're going to love it. All right. I'll figure out, you know, I just finished watching the staircase, which is very similar to the making a murderer and another brutal corrupt system that screwed people. But yeah, all right, I'll try to give it a shot. But only three promise to watch. You promise to watch Star Wars. Yeah, okay. The baby owner one I haven't seen that. Yeah, the baby Yoda, The Mandalorian. Watch that one. 'cause I can always subscribe to 18 different streaming services now. Not all get rid of cable things and create idea of folks. Yeah, exactly. 20 times more of her TV now and I have no idea what channel anything's on. Exactly. And you never end up watching TV end up just like looking on your phone because you don't you're too lazy to turn on and try to scroll through the menu to find something alive. I actually watched less TV now because it's so frustrated, Googling, where can I watch a man? Exactly. Exactly. Forget it. I'm just gonna like, you know, read the newspaper. Exactly. All right, let's do poker now. All right, this year's World Series of poker has come to an end and here are our final updates, spinning glazer one event 78 to ten K rats championship for a sports career bracelet. Previously in the series, he had a second third and 9th place finishes. They'll help you made a 6th final table the series, and I can't believe you didn't notice I did. You did it everywhere and I just said screw it. He's doing it to piss me off or he's really stupid. So either way, you know, I don't know, but you're really itchy L button on my laptop is what it is. Constantly putting extra L's where they don't belong. It's like Easter egg hunt for you. Anyway, I feel help me with one out. Actually. One L and Phil, too and help me. You made a 6 final table of the series. Adrian Mateo is one of an 82, the 250 K high roller for his fourth career bracelet in the highest buy in event of the series. Leo Omar gets when event 83 to $1500 closer to become the only woman to win an open event this series. Jeremy Osman is one of N 84 to 50 K PO high roller defeating Phil Helmut one L and NFL. Heads up, helping me set the record for the most final tables in a series with 7 Daniel mcgrady who finished third. Josh aria was 7th, the grand I would go on to finish third in the very next event while aria had a tenth place finish two events later. And Josh Ari is this year's player of the year at 11 cache is two bracelets in two other final tables with 4194.59 points helping me to finish second with 3720.01 points and ten cash is one bracelet. 6 other final tables, while doing your grano, who hasn't won a bracelet since 2013, boy, I would have lost that, but rallied to finish third with 3531.03 points with 18 cashes and three final tables. The World Series of poker started a new series of NFT options, which we don't care about at all. Nope. But if you do, it features famous clips from the series over the years. And finally, well known when Las Vegas tax expert Russ Fox had published his estimates of the tax burden for this year's main event final table. New world champion Cory, elder, a German who lives in Austria, very smartly for tax purposes and two British final table participants won't owe a single penny in taxes based on U.S. tax treaties with those two nations and the fact that neither of those countries not companies. Countries, tax gambling, winnings, the other players who have in the United States Turkey and Argentina will see a good chunk of their winnings going to various governments with high park lives in New Jersey's likely to pay the highest percentage of his winnings. Okay, where to start? The only NFT I'd be interested in is he called me with Jack high. I think that's the one I would get a little bit more for that. Yeah, that's the one I might buy. And maybe the Chris moneymaker, not knowing it's his turn to act and the whole world's looking at him and they all thought that he had a serious decision to make and he's getting ready to fold. Those two, I might consider, you know, put some Cheddar down on, but other than that, yeah, I have no interest in NFTs right now. I tell you Rea. What a remarkable year. I mean, he comes out of nowhere again. Obviously, he's been a player the whole time and all that, but I mean, just to have this massive year. And every time helmets tried to one up, I'm gonna get it back or whatever our AB right there with him finishing right near him or whatever. It was a pretty remarkable year for him. Congratulations, really phenomenal. Yeah, he was definitely a fly in his soup this whole series, right? Thought he was going to catch up and then you follow that over there. Hey, hey, he's had another final table. Well, guess what? Josh Ari just missed the final labels. I don't do much. So yeah, somebody called him an unlikely player of the year. I don't know if that seems like a stretch to me. Obviously, I think some of these other names, people probably would have thought a bit more. But I don't necessarily think it's an unlikely, but one of these great pros gets a good streak and the initial we had three of them. I mean, three of the most fantastic players will oversee finished one two and three and they all had great series. Solidifying our player of the year, you know, professional player going to do well in this World Series stuff. I mean, they really did just rise to the occasion. The other stuff on top of LEGO markets, that's fantastic. You know, a woman winning, it's always always great when that can happen because then it just opens up the field to more women saying, hey, I think I can do this too and getting them out there to play and that's a great thing. Some of these other names I didn't really recognize, but they had multiple bracelets. Again, this week, everybody who want to bracelet seem to have wondered fourth bracelet. It's crazy. And I haven't heard telling you squawking about the player of the year. Here at the end, I'm sure he probably was somewhere. But it's interesting because he talked about when he had his first meltdown over here and it should reward final tables over anything else. So we've got to look at now we kind of know some of the stats, right? So aria made four final tables, he made 7, but aria had two bracelets he only had one, so I don't know. I mean, 11 cashes and ten companies had ten. So, you know, I think between those two, I think we're really splitting hairs now. Would have been interesting if Negro would have cast a couple more times 18 cashes had more than almost as much of those two guys combined. Had he had a couple more cashes and actually been the player of the year and I'm not looking for a appointment to the college football playoff selection committee here by saying it, but I would have a hard time stop eating a player of the year that didn't win a bracelet. Yeah. Yeah, that's true. I mean, still 18 cash is pretty phenomenal. But that's remarkable. Remarkable. I think you meant new granular..

"You're listening to the best podcast on the planet. I'm Chris Cassandra. And I'm Scott long. We should let the listeners know that we are recording this under a tornado warning. Until 5 o'clock, so I mean, we are dedicated. We're putting our lives on the line for the anti of nation today. Yeah, I'm Bill woman and you're Helen Hunt. Not Bill Tobin. Why do you keep getting them mixed up? It's 15 years later, Scott. I know. And that guy's dead too, I really should. It give him some respect. But I like it when the cow goes by and you're like, how? Same guy. I always say that's like the job I would do if I could start over. Jason tornadoes, you know? Wouldn't want to do that. I'm gonna hang out with Helen Hunt all day. Perfect. I don't know about that part, but yeah. Alexi and the cows and the houses and stuff get ripped up and I've never seen him live tornado. I've seen water spouts, you know, I've never seen one in front of me, and I've always wanted to, so. I haven't seen one either, so maybe our dream will come true today in the middle. All right, fingers crossed. All right, we're almost half the way halfway half of the way half the way halfway. Halfway through. Take of the out of it. We're almost halfway through. Halfway through the World Series of poker and here, this week's updates, my goal adamo, one event 38, the 50 K high roller for his third career bracelet beating Justin bonomo heads up. Eric Seidel also made the final table. Didn't give me a shout out, either. Man, what is wrong with him? Josh aria, one of M 39, the $1500 plo for his third career bracelet in a final table featuring two other bracelet winners, Bradley Rubin one of 42, $1500 razz. For his third career race that there's a theme going on here. Yeah. And he said it was probably his only only his third career raz tournament. And finally, Tommy Lee won an event 45, the ten K plo is a second time he has won that event. This week's not as sexy as last week, I have to say. Yeah, we didn't have any meeting juicy stuff to talk about today. It's just a lot of like, wow, you guys were great poker players. I mean, you know, Bradley Rubin's got nothing on me. I won my first rest tournament show. Right. Yes. So, there you go. But you know, just that kind of thing shows you that, you know, as long as you're not a play poker, you know what I mean? You can play any event. You just convert whatever you've learned from other disciplines and to that. So there's always that famous story of Jennifer harman,.

"Next in josh arias booker career. I had a to. Let's say emily two or three at the time. In two thousand five. She was three. I had a young daughter. I was buried at the time. I was focused. Well spoken sounds really trucking around a lot i i was. I was trying to be bad. And because my kids My daughter was everything to me at the time and I i don't know. I'm trying to find the right way to put it but yeah i was. I was in atlanta i. I had didn't move to vegas. How come and i was Because action junkie. And if i had moved vegas. I would've been a regular spearmint. Rhino and i would have done a lot of bad thing more than i did But yeah i wanted. I wanted my kids to grow up with family. Because i didn't have it So it was one of the main one of the main reasons. I stated grants because my dad was there and my brother. He was there and my wife at the time She had family there. And i want my kids to grow up with the like i did. I grew up with my dad had My dad had seven brothers and sisters but they all lived in israel So i did grow up. And i didn't know my bob so i literally had no uncles grandmother grandfather here. Nothing it was just basically me up brother my sister and my dad so so he's looking atlanta. Yeah i think it makes it makes sense especially like with young kids you know and also sort of understanding your weaknesses as as a poker player percents. Yeah i probably don't need to move to vegas. Because i mean no matter how much money you have it can all it can all turn into dust in the middle of the night in vegas deaths and it would definitely bows two hours to rich to you and I would have it would have been it would have been fun but It would have been it. Would looking back I've made plenty of mistakes along the way. But i wouldn't change anything that i've done. I'm always i live in. I like to live in the bullet and living today and everything that i do is a lesson along the way so i don't ever you'll never hear me say i wish i did this. I wished i did that. It's always you know learning from that experience and building from that experience like a kid right like you're sitting with your emotions. In how do i do. I learned from going broke. What i learn from this mistake. How to become a better person So since you're living in a land what games were you playing in like. During this time. I guess online poker was quite big and you were a full tilt pro. But i don't know how involved were with them. Yeah yeah i played a lot I played a lot at first. I was playing Bo dog was my first sponsor. And i played a lot dog in then Then i moved over to full. And i had always played a lot online I've always Mixed it up with the the geniuses playing high plan the nosebleed limits. I fared very well until Poker like poker evolve like around like brian hastings. And taylor that all those guys that like really turned it into a numbers game which it is now. I did really well. It's still that came along that. Because the fact that i didn't want to study and i didn't think that you could. You could do a poker action based on some numbers that you spe- and i was wrong and i think that though because like in the beginning you talked about how you knew this game of math whereas disconnect i i just because i was i was gullible to believe that i could be successful. No matter it was it was ego driven It was the fact. May i've made all this money. I don't need that shit and add I was badly wrong. And so i went through a few years of losing and Failing to it was the first time i liked that. I really failed to notice that what i'm doing wrong And i woke up from that finally after a few straight years losing like i think and because of the fact that i don't really love poker that much that played into the part like i didn't wanna start i didn't want to. I didn't want to look at this stuff because it was hard for me to comprehend. And and then. Finally it just dawned on baby noattacks if you're not gonna do this stuff that you have to. You can't compete.

"P. g. is the only josh josh has been in and around the game of poker his entire adult life and his racked up more than eight point. One million dollars in lifetime a multi table tournament cashes. I feel like i'm in danger of going. Full troy mcclure in this intro. But you may remember mr ari from the time. He got third in the two thousand four. Waso p main event. The year that passed cpg guest gregg fossil remer went. The distance also may remember him from his to w. s. o. p. e. gold bracelet victories or from the legendary bad. Beat he put on bryce yawkey at the final table at the fifty thousand dollar poker players championship. Playing deuce to seven triple draw. It was a particularly brutal hand where he busted poor mr yawkey despite being a more than ninety nine percent underdog one thing that tends to get left out. That story by the way is the fact that josh commanding gyp lead for handed and doubling up. Yawkey would have only cost him about fifteen percent of his stack. Another fun little story about that. Event is at one of my closest friends. The man i have to give a hat tip to for introducing josh and i in the first place actually bought a rather large piece of mr. Rei for that event and what brice yawkey didn't know he had going against him is at my friend runs. Absurdly hot backing players so spiking a one percenter was honestly kind of expected but when it comes to having a rich colorful successful journey through the world of gambling and playing poker it's hard to find them more compelling character than josh he is undeniably live a fulfilling life of high adventure on the green felt chasing poker greatness and in today's episode featuring the one and only josh aria. You're going to learn josh origin story into the world of poker and playing cards. What josh was feeling thinking and experiencing at that legendary thousand four main event final table. The project josh is currently working on. That will very likely fire you up and much much more so now without any further ado i bring to you a fearless gambler who has stood the test of time to one and only josh. Are you mr aria. How're you doing. Sarah good morning. I'm doing great man. How about you brad. I'm doing quite well doing quite well. We're just reminiscing about some old private games of atlanta's passed some ghosts in my closet. Let's keep those. Let's kick those in the past. Yeah it's good. It's good talking to people who've experienced similar things. I think where you know you can kind of. Sometimes this journey like when things go down like that it's very loan so it's a very lonely avenue by yourself so talking to people who've experienced stuff you know it's good good for my spirit the very It's a single sport so you never get You don't really get to Share yours sorrows and you know nobody wants to hear your bad beat stories than but now it's like we're both saying them together. It's like we're a team team of bad stories. Genuine bad beats though like legit bat. I typically start this show out by asking about your story through cards and this might be a long story and this might be the only question that we ask on the show so How old were you or how old are you now. When did you start playing cards. Was that look lighten. I'm forty six now. I started playing cards when i was eighteen. Seventeen eighteen. I don't really remember. It was back like ours. So i i used to play a lot of pool and i gambled playing pool. I was never into drinking and doing drugs and like everybody in my high school. My high school was a lot of drugs. A lot of drinking. And i found my way to the pool halls and everybody like everybody at the pool hall would sit around at dot gamble and try to get any edge that they could possibly get like. It's insane how big knits. Everybody was but the second that the pool room would close. Everybody would pull up barstools to a pool table and the bartender would start dealing poker. Well i was always good at math. So i started realize it came second nature to see that like. Oh wow this guy. Put all his money with the flush draw and there's only x. amount of cards that he can make flush with and blah blah blah. So i started poker. Really intrigued me So every night after the pool room would close. We would start a poker game and that evolved to no. We don't want josh play bla-bla-bla blah some like you got kicked out of your first game. Yeah yeah and then. I found out i've found home games in atlanta like one and two dollar games and i would just go broke every time. i was way too aggressive to play limit ochre Limit poker was real huge. No limit hadn't made its boom yet. And i would have. These huge swings of going broke building. A bankroll going broke building. Bankroll no bankroll management at all. I'd go broke. I'd go get a job. Get paycheck for two hundred In then Excuse me i found bigger gains around town and start building my bankroll up in every time i build my bankroll up i would drive up luxy and play poker against the big boys and i would always look over at the the twenty forty limit table like man one day. Hope to play in that game. And so i would just build my bankroll up and drive down. Gopro can come back and build it back up again and go down and finally I started doing good. And and i just i always made it a point and i told you earlier that i don't wanna go broke the same way twice so i always would just like i'd go broke and i would sit in those feelings and and learn from those feelings that i don't wanna feel this way. What is causing these feelings. And where did that come from that ability to sit with your emotions and because this is the healthy way to deal with it and i think lots of people kind of bury it in the backyard and then they explode one day but like just apple five always. I've always been a huge competitor. Played sports my whole life and whether it's any kind of competition it doesn't matter what it is and i i've lost a lot in poker. You have to deal with losing a lot so along the way I just don't look at losses as i look at him as learning experiences. And it's it's a very used up analogy. But it's just what i've done since i was a kid. The pain of losing hurts. And i want to understand why didn't Performed the best of my ability. And so i guess i was lucky to be able to analyze that at a young age. Then in like nineteen knicks. Maybe nine hundred ninety six or ninety seven Star playing tournaments and my aggression was something that people couldn't really deal with back then usually before when you get three bet. It was the nuts. Everybody they had when you when you three by somebody.
