End six naps as well So again small sample size and the fifth worst graded player on offense. This one was surprising to me. This is the one that sort of jumped out. When i looked at this quarter on paterson they had him in there now as a receiving threat sixty nine point one grade really good. They had him with a zero point. Zero pass blocking grades so he beat out jalen mayfield's one point four last week with the i'm guessing the absolute worst pass blocking grade. You can get As a runner he got the fifty two point. Two's so sort of middle of the pack. Some people give me grief because on twitter. I said hey. Is it time for patterson to be running back one When actually as a runner he wasn't that effective some of that i think was because he was offset with the The play that got blown up on third and short where he lost like four or five yards so that took away a good bit of his yardage and also it's spirit to say patterson had most of his out of the backfield but as a receiver. And i think that's where a lot of people were right and they called me out on that If if you're one of the ones who pointed that out you're correct. I was wrong in my assessment of him as a runner and apparently pf wadley agrees with you that he should not be the top dog at running back. Where did some of falcons offensive players land matt ryan was at number eight. His overall grade of sixty five point mine again sort of for player who sort of consistently has spent his entire career in the high seventies into the eighties and sometimes a high eighties and even into the nineties with pf scores This is a rough start ryan. It's actually not as bad as last year or two thousand nineteen which was a disastrous start. The first year when dirk koetter came back But clearly. I think the pressure of these first two games has gotten ryan off the mark. I'm really thinking we're gonna see a bounce back. And i wanna point out. He sort of has a notorious history for starting the first few games of every season somewhat slow even if you go back to two thousand sixteen when he won the mvp award you go back and look so of his lowest grade games. Were those first few games of the season. Even though that second game in oakland they won his first. Game against tampa bay was one of his worst games of that season so he was at number eight calvin ridley at number nine on this list this week again much more productive this year. Is this this game. Pardon me is receiver and kind surprised to see him there Russell gauge was at number six again. I think he had a decent game. And mike davison number seven. So there's some of the key guys where they landed for the falcons offense. We're gonna talk about the falcons defense. Some of the guys stood out there but before we do that remain. "Of twenty twenty one season. Let's start with the offense so obviously this is the unit like many people were curious to see how key guys played throughout this game. There's some interesting scores here. There's guys who. I think we're on the opposite. End the the spectrum of what we're expecting guys who are sort of in the middle of the pack that maybe looked better than we thought and some really big surprises overall in this group. Let's start at the top. The guys who earn the best grades d number one greater player for the falcons. Right guard. chris lindstrom He had a very strong game according to pf He had one of the best run blocking scores so he was getting it done as a run blocker. Also very very solid as a pass blocker overall grade of eighty three point seven. Really great game from him. Hopefully we're going to see more of that and again considering some competition that he was going against. That's a really great score going up against one of the best defensive lines and football Both last year and of course going into this year so great to see that from lindstrom really excited about his long term potential as an interior protector for this offensive line next to him Thirteen total snaps. So keep this in mind. Tight end lee smith. He had a really good pass blocking grade of Well i'm sorry. Pass receiving grade of seventy nine point. Four which is a little surprising. He had the one play where he caught it and sort of crawled to a i on so i guess you get extra points from. Pf for making that kind of effort. It's i'll beyond this. This is one of the grades. I looked at and i thought. That's that's a curious guy. Show up on this part of the list. But he's there he's our number two highest greater player. And of course when you're starting right guard in your blocking tight end or two of your best graded offensive players. Something probably is not going incredibly well for your offense. I'm sorry i am laughing because this list is sort of getting even more absurd as we go down at our number three on the list. Caleb gerry right tackle from what i saw. He did not have a particularly strong game. Now i will say this. His overall grade of just under seventy was is good. His run blocking grade seventy four point. Four i think is what lifted his grade because his pass blocking was still a sixty one now. Sixty one is not terrible. It's sort of a right a right at league average. Give or take. So you figure if the if you've got thirty two starters he's probably in that fifteen to eighteen range on average so you know not terrible not bad not not necessarily blowing the doors off as a pass blocker but as a run blocker. He's he's apparently getting the job done so kudos to him for having a relatively strong game overall the whole the whole performance number four thirteen snaps christian blake wide receiver again. Really sort of surprising to see him on the list. Thought some other guys played better than him but and this is one thing to keep in mind. Let me also caveat this with pro football focus a lot of times. They will come back and they do. Their initial grades and these are the initial grades. They'll come back and have a couple of other people give their grades and they'll sort of do a mid week reassessment now from what i've seen their grades don't change dramatically but sometimes they'll come in and they'll realize oh you know what on this play. It looks like yeah he. He did throw that ball behind. So we're gonna take a point off or the opposite though they'll give guys a little bit of a bump in and you may see this list change in more but right now these these are the guys on their initial grading from pf number five on this list Tight end cockpits. I actually thought he'd be a little bit higher because he showed the incredible athleticism. I think we're all excited about for his long term potential. Also incidentally cockpits played fifty seven of the seventy seventy two total snaps so he he was in there a lot more especially when you compare him to hayden. Hearse only played thirty snaps at tight in. This was a little bit interesting to me because last week it seemed like we didn't see pits all this week We saw a lot more of him and so far the results that good now one of the encouraging things here you know his pass passing grades. Sixty point eight pretty good his pass blocking gray the seventy one point two If he can continue to do that where he can be successful as an inland blocker. That is i mean. That's not what we drafted him for. But there's a tight end. That's kind of what you're hoping for. And that would make him a little bit more well rounded. Now it's one game small sample size clearly but if pits can round out as an all-round tight end that makes him a kinda guy that could be on the field for the majority of snaps. And that's a really encouraging initial sign from the rookie. In not something that's gonna get a lot of attention. People are going to pay attention to receiving stats and whatnot. But this is something that matters especially for his particular position right. The five guys at the bottom. I don't know what's going on here. I like this player. Lot but in eighteen total snaps. The worst greater player was fullback. Keith smith terrible. Passing grade godawful pass blocking grade below average run blocking just a rough game for him and i don't necessarily i didn't necessarily see it but yeah just not what you wanted to see next up. Probably no surprise here. Jalen mayfield left guard. Now we'll say this. His overall grade was a twenty eight point. Five his pass blocking grade which was a one point. Four last week went up to thirty one point eight this week so that is improvement. It's still terrible but that is improvement so he went from the absolute worse to probably still the worst but not the worst in you know all of pf history in his run blocking was still a thirty three. He had just one penalty on the day though. So i do want to give him some credit there he. He has cleaned up from the penalty standpoint. And i think the falcons offense was able to manufacture a little bit more even with him being clearly subpar at left guard. let's hope that trajectory keeps pointing up and that he can get god win the be amazing to see his pass blocking get into the forties or fifties next week And they're going against the giants team in week. Three that is not have near the same Pass rush that. We've seen the first two weeks. Maybe there's some hope for mayfield to continue to grow into that. Left guard spot before. "I don't necessarily know if they're gonna blitz as much and that might be josh because we had a rookie defensive end who played pretty well display his staff Shown it yeah. He really did it before i jump into that. I just want to throw this out there. Sophy dean just tweeted out crazy stat. I just counted up. Twenty five percent of bills quarterback josh allens career touchdown passes have come against the dolphins so That's that is not good. But but jake we talked about it and i joke that we pre used that spike in reference. I mean i thought i was so happy that i do think. Jalen phillips is going to be a key to this game and one of the big things that came out. Last night was His burst off the line. He was one of the quickest players. He ranked fourth with a seven tenth of a second quickest off the line. According next gen stats. He was the fourth fastest player in the league. With fifteen with minimum fifteen pass attempts to check up the video on the fence. I mean what you saw last week. Was you know. He wasn't going out there. Getting to the quarterbacks per se wasn't he didn't even log a tackle. Maybe not in a quarterback hit but song exploding off the line you saw taking double teams and you truly saw him. You know opening up holes for those stunts to come in and and get pressure on the quarterback so i think we saw twenty two. Snap jalen phillips. I hope that number is greatly this weekend again. I don't want to say that he's going to be the spy or he's going to be the difference maker in this game. But i think when you have an athletic player like josh and you also have a guy like jalen. Phillips drop back in coverage is good against iran can set the edge but can get at the quarterback. I mean i think using him more To your advantage would would definitely go along way against josh aound because the getting pressure on him is going to be the only way this team to win. Yeah josh and i think it's important to kind of put this out. Your too is that we're not gonna you know. Put jalen phillips in the ring of honor because he already has first and foremost. But secondly. Because i don't think this is a stat that he's incredible. This is why he's great. Those statistics are gonna come. But i think it did give us an idea of what the dolphins have seen out of him at what he is capable of given more and more opportunities just to kind of put it into perspective. Josh andrew van gingko was seen as miami's one of these top pass rushers arguably even the top pass rusher outside of abating logbook so it was strange to me the fact that bad kinkel brushed on fourteen passes last week and jalen phillips the rookie. Rush on fifteen passes last week. That's kind of something to think about. I don't know if that's a trend. That's gonna continue. But when the dolphins are going to probably try to mimic what the steelers did and let's play a game where you don't make a lot of turnovers you just play clean football and you wait for your opponent to make a mistake and take advantage of those That's clear what the bills did last time. These guys played But josh i have to say looking at these sets looking out. Jalen phillips ken get into the field and you can have a spine happening on that miami dolphins defense. I'm not entirely sure. We're gonna see that same pressure rate that we saw against doing within week one. Yeah and just to throw out some names with joey. Hopefully we do see a spike hiddensee. Jalen phillips have a monster game. But i just think it's funny guy post a of it so generic you know. Here's every rep. "That's easy and after that. You know who is in jon allen and that'll be easier right the the jets are coming up soon. Yeah you know they. All they have is who right. He'll be fine all they have to. Make it to miami. Chris wilken but maybe maybe drill in mayfield was going to be that player. Julia know wasn't good in training camping. Got like not many wraps and then he would just turn on when it comes to the regular season. You just olo is going to happen again. I want the kid to get off reps. And i understand that i just want the team to have like okay as you pointed out if this kid takes these early season ribs and mentally. He's getting beaten down from it. Like what answer do they have the only answer. They probably have at this point as well. Keep rolling them out there. He's going to get better. No point as army and to his credit. Arthur smith did mention that. You know he thinks that jalen mayfield is very very tough minded individual You know he made a point of emphasis to make that statement when asked about him I don't think any of this has been fair to jail. Mayfield now like no. From the very beginning. He was dealt a very very rough hand He comes in. He played right tackle in college. And you know projects more as a guard in the nfl according to the roi score and that's completely fair. They drafted him as a judge In training camp. They don't put him. They don't give him the left guard reps they give him the right tackle raps. He doesn't get enough reps. And then he comes in into the regular season. Basing fletcher cox than Right away like this kid was just set up for failure in my opinion from the very beginning. Especially someone who you know. We weren't really expecting when he was drafted. We weren't really expecting them to make that day. One impact was a player for twenty twenty two for next season. And you know he comes in game one all right like you know your throat your thrown to the wolves essentially because the team didn't really address left guard at all and except for with josh andrews who you know he got hurt entertain new would have been much better so yeah definitely like would some perspective jalen make like he's he he's getting it on social media and from the fan base but just keep some perspective that this really isn't his fault like it's not his fault that he's in this position really bad for like really bad for him. It's it's one thing he's a you know it's a veteran or if somebody's playing a position he's ever played before in is just every every detail about it. It just feels unfair to him But yeah it'll be interesting to see see where it goes from here knocking to get a whole lot. Easier moving forward but hope for his second hope for Twitter sake that determine like again. I'm more upset at. How team handled this than i am of jalen mayfield struggling because you've got nervous but no i like. This was a recipe firmness struggle. Like everything came together for him to like you know struggling because of course in week one. Yeah exactly well just remember like in the preseason. The first preseason game that offensive line was an absolute disaster. Preseason week two against arguably i would say much better defensive line playing mostly starters. The same guys looked a lot better. So there's a chance that it could. And then the cleveland game came and they just you know thumb dolman was taking the carries from philippi. Franks that's how how beco- throws running for his life and again they look benz they are. We're ready fulfills go. Forget yeah yeah. I mean i it was. It's very rough for mayfield. In the whole offensive line's going to have to grow up very fast. And it's unfortunate for them. But i would have been like mayfield would have been coming into this game at the same place mat. Hennessy was you know having to dan rea. Maybe getting a couple of spots starts under his belt just to get used to it going into week one against an all pro defensive tackle. No it's like okay. We'll never planned on the left before you never played offensive. You never played guard before. That's fine just go in there and play against like one of the best defense arrest. Anybody that can relate to jail of mayfield right now. Is matt hints. Your first career start. Is chris jones and your second one is against vida obey look hit a go do it. So yeah i hope honestly and this is the way i hope the hennessy is probably to the side and saying hey i know it's tough for you but you know you gotta we gotta work our way out of this collective we as a team on the unit. Yeah yeah and in fairness hennessy has his own struggles like he he. He was a twenty in the last game. Pass like the only reason times. Guide honors for not mentioning. That is because mayfield was like a one so this is only what his fourth career start. Yes he's not it's it's is. He played. I think he came in. Let's guard or something. Yeah he's not that far ahead of right. Yeah hey what's good thing about the offensive line. Was they all consistently run. Baulked well Which is something we were not at all used to seeing ever. So we'll him. Credit for that even mayfield with his abysmal grade. Like an average run blocker. He was a good run blocker. mcgarry was serviceable. Obviously chris lindstrom. That's not nothing because this the right and the use of play auction in the future more and more will help negate some of those amazing pass rushes. we saw arthur smith you know. Use that in tennessee beautifully. The last couple of years and used play action. Lot more than dirk. Carter did last year especially on the early down which was really nice to see you know. That's one of the positives on the offense but the pass blocking has to be a lot better for that to be effective in for that to be put in use in the first place there. Cutting us play action when you're down twenty twenty two seven late and a fourth. Yeah let's do it. Roll it out. Place we one. Everybody knows running the ball. All right man. I mean yeah thank goodness. He's a hit. "Smith's playbook was that titans offense. I think at least at the very beginning sharp is going to be a bigger part of this offense than lake indefinitely than darby just because of his knowledge with well within this playbook. "Don't even know what what's touch on. Really i mean left yeah mayfield. A left guard is going to be. There's going to be problematic like this reminds me of. I was the twenty eleven playoffs where we were. We were against the green bay packers. And i can't remember who the starting corey was. But i'm gonna mess up all these names. Now it's wins yes. Okay so curtis. Oh it's going to be forced into a starting role. And i remember thinking. Oh no oh no. And that was indeed a very very big problem in atlanta did not play well Mayfield gives me that same feeling like he. I would've expected a little something out of him. I didn't really understand the the the the draft pick. I think he he went the third round And you know it. It didn't really feel. Fill a need. But i know we're kind of working on a best player available but we we saw mayfield. This preseason at garvey's i am a tackle and he was awful at both. That's what i can't imagine the disaster. That's going to happen week. One i i hope they give him a lot of help. I wish we're able to see a lot more matt seasons. He's obviously the starter now. He's had you know a full year under his belt when he gets to see a lot of him in account lakewood genus said kayla. Mcgarry is still don't know if he's he's like i don't know if he's good. I feel much better man. Ghana was still. Don't know exactly what happened to him but he appears like he's going to be out for awhile he's probably better than mcgarry. "Nfl season begins for the falcons. Let's start with the formation of the falcons versed practice squad now a couple of caveats here. The practice squad size in previous years was ten. It is sixteen this year. Same as last year likewise. Nfl teams are given four spots where they can protect those practice squad players that they cannot be poached by other teams. That will be the case again this year as well. In the falcons have announced fifteen of their possible. Sixteen practice squad signings so. This is a little bit mysterious. We're not sure what they're going to do with that final spot on the practice squad although we do have some speculation around that. And that's something we'll watch at the alcoholic over the coming days but here at the initial fifteen players who have been signed to the practice squad and only one. This is really interesting. Only one of those players has come from another team That's gonna be quinton bell. Who is coming over from tampa bay otherwise all fourteen of the remaining players on the practice squad spent time with the falcons this year in training camp and the preseason so The falcons apparently liked what they saw or they weren't compelled by any players on any other teams enough to favor them over the guys that they saw camp so something to keep in mind. So here's the list offensive lineman believers many of you may remember. We thought he was going to make the fifty three man roster. Well they've put them on the practice squad for now As i mentioned quinton bell outside outside linebacker was previously with tampa bay the year inside linebacker Emmanuel l'herbe running back dante foreman wide receiver. John green who finished the preseason pretty strong had the touchdown pass From josh rosen in the final preseason game running back caleb huntley again one of those guys that when he didn't make the roster with a little bit surprised by that We thought for certain he would be on the practice squad and he is indeed and he was one of the first player sign Safety dwayne johnson junior who Mike rothstein from espn noted throughout camp Looked like he was playing pretty. Well i think this is an instance where the team favored The veterans they had safety and the draft picks that they had at corner and they felt like they could stash. Dwayne johnson for a year Even though he played pretty well may have deserved a spot at the back end. I think this is an instance where they felt. They could get him onto the practice squad and indeed to have offensive lineman. Sam jones offensive lineman ryan news. Newsreel is somebody that we thought could be a potential darkhorse to make the back end of the roster. He actually had a really strong. Preseason one of our highest graded offensive lineman By pf So he is a name to keep in mind as someone that could potentially get promoted during the season especially if their injuries and we all know how the nfl is so he is a name that is on the practice squad wouldn't surprise me if he becomes the the protector players. All right outside linebacker. George obina tight end john rain. Many of you know that He was my darkhorse. Pick to be tight. End for the falcons ultimately went with just three tight ends for the fifty three man roster John rain. I thought played a little bit better than parker who is currently on the covert list and hessy could return and actually be put on fifty three man roster. We'll see how that plays out But rain is on the practice squad. I think they liked enough of him to At least wanna keep him around and see how he can grow and develop defensive. Lineman chris layton Wide receiver austin trammell. Tremble with someone that Really showed up early in camp but an unfortunate injury took him out for an extended period of time. it looks like the falcons did like what they saul initially from him So he is on the practice squad as well. Tied-in david wells. And finally cornerback cris williamson williamson someone that again Looked good early in camp. Maybe fell off a little bit as can't progress But he is on the practice squad now. Something to keep in mind is again. That open spot You know we at the colic think that they're probably not going to carry all three quarterbacks on the fifty three fifty three man roster for the entire season. I think it probably makes sense. That they're going to stash a franks onto the practice squad at some point They're only right now. Running with eight offensive lineman on the fifty three man roster that probably should be Nine and given the recent injury Which will cover here. In the second that really sort of reinforces the fact that they need more depth at offensive line so that is the initial practice squad again. One open spot. We'll see what happens with that and keep in mind this initial. We're not even to the first regular season game. This portion of the roster. These sixteen guys is probably going to rotate throughout the season as it does every single year but there are some promising players that did look good and camp and it'll be interesting to see what happens with them all right. I mentioned the injury And this is an incredibly unfortunate or fortunate depending on what you think of his play but Presumed starting left guard. Josh andrews broke his hand in practice and he has been placed on injured reserve. Now that sounds arguably worse than what it is because The injured reserve are the same as they were last year. And it's a change from the norm Number one an unlimited number of players can come off of injured reserve now so in the past it used to be that you could only take Two players off of injured reserve in any given season. Well with the covert roles. You can now bring back as many players during the season as you want. So you don't have to put them on season ending injured reserve secondly You can bring back a player as soon as three weeks. The old injured reserve rules required a player to be out at least six weeks. If you're going to bring the back So josh andrews with this week in then next week being the first week of the nfl season before the first games could come back after about four weeks and it depends on severity of the injury. Depends on whether it needs surgery or not. He could come back in in a soon as you know four weeks after the third game now right now. It looks like rookie. Jalen mayfield will probably be the presumed starter. However the falcons did put in a waiver claim for offensive guard. Kobe gossip gossip was a two thousand eighteen. Sixth round draft. Pick of the minnesota vikings. He was waived. And the falcons put in that way. Reclaim and they did get him. So it looks like gossip will be on the fifty three man roster at least for now taking up that spot that joe josh andrews was going to occupy So at this point the falcons still only have eight. Active offensive lineman on the roster. It wouldn't surprise me if they tried to sign someone else to add to the fifty roster and then as i mentioned before pushing someone like flea franks down to the practice squad An additional addendum to this is it. Looks like the falcons may also be placing kendall sheffield cornerback. Kendall sheffield on injured reserve This was a move that many of us thought would happen. And it was kinda surprising that he was put on the initial fifty three man roster even though he hadn't played this entire preseason. He's missed almost every single practice. Preseason game preseason game three of the twenty twenty one season they will be at home sunday night of all times to face. The cleveland browns. Who also going to be playing some starters and yes that includes they're infamous quarterback So evan first of all how you doing man. I'm doing well. dwi how you doing. I'm good. This is got me intrigued. We weren't sure if we were. We're going to see starters but it sounds like we will. We may not see every last one of them. But every indication from arthur smith in an interview with rich eisen and what he said to the media today would seem to indicate we will see starters for some period of time. What are you looking forward to. From the starters you know if we just starting on the offensive side of the ball boy. That seems like an obvious point here from but what are you looking for to most from being able to potentially see the starters competence good Play calling. I don't obviously expect them to come out with like you know their secret. Top secret plays in stuff in blois away but just some light. Decent play calling In situational play calling that makes sense because in the past couple of years there wasn't a whole lot of that Maybe some good Blocking would be nice if we see some of the starting lot of offensive line You know and then it's like i think the big thing everybody wants these obviously cow pitch. But let's see how matt ryan in cockpits connect in a game assuming both of them play. I think how pits is more likely Matt ryan probably not as much if he does play. I can't imagine it's more than one or two series Just because at this point you know he. He's a veteran. he doesn't really need it But yeah i mean. That's kind of what i wanna see You know calvin ridley. We kind of know what. We're getting there but i think towel pits is the big one that everybody's going to tune in to see. Yeah absolutely He may only play a couple of series and that remains to be seen. I don't think. I think it's pretty clear we're not going to get the full quote unquote dress rehearsal. The people always talk about right Arthur smith even said you know everything's changed. That is no longer a thing that coaches think about. They didn't even game plan this week in the same way that they used to for preseason game three so i think that's a strong indicator that they're probably gonna pull the starters relatively early more like what you've seen in the past in a preseason game to where the as you mentioned you know guys were in for a series or two and that's what i'm expecting especially with some of the veterans matt ryan calvin ridley Jake matthews guys who. They know exactly what they're going to get out of them. There's not a lot of questions there. and then even a little bit further down With someone like chris lindstrom hayden hers. But yeah i wanna see pits But you mentioned early kind of want to see just the overall flow the offense and maybe most importantly how does this sort of new patchwork offensive line. Look how this hennessy look. We haven't seen a ton of him but he has sort of become like the unchallenged. Starter at center you know they brought in drew dolman and i don't think dominance challenged him at all for that spot which hopefully is good news about hennessy. Like they've they've sat him like a presumed starter which is right. That could be a really good sign. Offensive line holds up as well. This too oh. God yeah absolutely backs. Yeah yeah because we haven't seen patterson at all my davis we saw little all sin. But then you know beyond that. It's like the deontay form in caleb huntley battle so right running back should be interesting. Yeah to that point. What about the guys. Further down the roster on the offensive zone ball. Who is. i'm looking at this. i. I'm curious about jalen mayfield. You know we'll get some reps at left guard. Could he push josh andrews. Were that starting position You and i have talked about ryan zule and how good he is. Look to this preseason. Is he a guy. That's gonna carve out a spot at the back end of this roster guy john rain yeah john rain the titan four in my mind is he going to show enough to secure that position or the teen could look for cuts elsewhere to try to shore up that fourth in there's no certainties here and then the other big one it you know there's if there's not already a lot to look at the receiver battle once you get past ridley gaijin zacchaeus news zacchaeus. We haven't seen any of either You know between christian. Blake chris in john green antonio none taj sharp who's probably the favourite for the four five slot in them. Frank darby trevor davis frank rb lifted last week with that was one game You know there's gonna be a battle there too so yeah concerning Darby scott over at the mothership even said in his mailbag today scott bear. He felt like frank darby was on the outside looking in. It may not make them lustre so definitely name to pay attention to sunday nights. A great point on that one. And of course i think we're we're sort of dancing around it. But how did we not mention josh. Rosen josh rosen. I mean right now. The falcons backup quarterback comes down to a failed first round. Pick who is on his fifteen in four years and a undrafted free agent quarterback with a big arm and athleticism but who is radically inconsistent like. This is the backup quarterback position right now. So yeah what about josh rosen. Do you think it sounds like he's going to get some playing time in this one to properly evaluate them. Has your opinion changed on. You know what it looks like for him as far as making this team no just because a lot of the reports have just been practice reports We need to see what he's gonna do in a game in. Obviously he hasn't had a ton of time to learn the playbook but I mean it's it's up for grabs. I don't think he's ever been in a better situation than he is right now to be a quarterback to all the other teams. It's like like san francisco for example was less news on. They like go in. "Just just as a oregon into kind of specific positions as a whole going back to the if the starter's play on both sides of the ball and i think the thing that all fans should be looking for that i will be looking for is. How did the starters play. Because you mentioned the the depth issues jeff. Schultz wrote a piece for the athletic. Saying basically the falcons had the most minimum wage contracts in the nfl. Make sense for all the salary cap reasons we've been covering throughout the off season. We know that the death is not there. The falcons best chance to win. This season is for their starters to stay healthy and play damn well and that's why normally i wouldn't really care how starters looking preseason but we need to see them have much more success than the team did in the first preseason game and if the stars go out there and light it up i will feel much more confident going into the year. If they don't. I'm not going to be the sky's falling but i'll be a little bit more trepidation with my expectations specifically though obviously the offensive line. I mean i think that was the the big like nightmare. Scenario in in game one was just wildly and blocked second teamers. And the falcons are in good shape. I think with have when i when i saw matt. Hennessy didn't dress. I was a little surprised by that. clearly speaks to how the coaching staff feels about him. Where he's basically okay. You're being treated like starter So i think they should feel in good shape about jake matthews mad hennessy. I think chris lindstrom again is on a path to be a star in this league. And then i think kayla mcgarry we saw what life could be like without kayla gary in the first game so i think that should help. Everybody appreciate him. A little bit more than they. Then he's not great by any means but he's not bad either. He's he's an average tackle and you can get by with one average tackle in this league But how the depth shakes out behind them. I don't think is a surprise to anybody that that's what i'll be looking for. You know whether it's jalen mayfield or Who's the rookie. They drew dahmane or josh andrews or any of those guys It's a shame that matt gono his missed all of this preseason. Because i really think there's tunde here for him to really stake his claim and outside of that if the starter's play i wanna see the running backs and because the guys there in the first game didn't get anything done and a lot of that is attributed probably to the offensive line. I do think you saw a lot more consistency in cohesion. In the play calling and the scheme they stuck to outside zone runs. Play action that bootlegs and screens. Which are your three main pillars of of an offense and especially in the preseason. You're really not going to see a lot of wrinkles. But i want to see how. Especially mike davis and quadri alison. I don't think we're gonna see a ton of quarter l. Patterson or if we if very vanilla because i think he's if there's like an x factor on offense going into this season for me i think he's he's that just because a grind. This seems like the team has something in mind for him but every team that's ever headquarters. L patterson like fan base thinks that before the season starts and then he gets thirty eight carries across the season. These mainly just to kick returner Manage that and then. I just want to see a a quarterbacks played better. I think we have an idea of how this is going to shake out and aj mccarron is going to be the primary backup and sleep. Eight francs practice squad. You know maybe third quarterback guy And just pray to matt. Ryan doesn't miss any any time but for as much as everybody kinda came away talking about flea bay francs and he certainly did kind of like spark the offense. I don't buy any. When a quarterback has the most rushing yards in a preseason game. he that doesn't mean the quarterback's good something gone off the rails. Like danny yelling. Did that all the time like i need. I need you to get in there and move the ball with your arm for me to take him seriously as as a quarterback with upside which is why. It's a shame that kurtz is gone. Because he he at least move the ball through the air. It kept the offense month's schedule made some plays with his arm and it looks like he's doing well so far in green bay up there and i wish him nothing but the best because he's a super nice guy but those are the three things that i'm looking at my basically named every position dame but offensive line kind of running next. We didn't get to see in the first preseason game and then just i need to see the quarterbacks play better yeah at everything you said one hundred percent and for me on the offensive line specifically. It's that left. Guard spot Yes i feel like that. Josh andrews right now sort of the pencil in starter jalen mayfield. Being moved away from tackle and back to competing for that left guard spot. It sounds like he was alternating times with josh enters with the first team that this week. So it'll be interesting to see if mayfield can crack into the quote unquote starting lineup. And get some snaps. Their that's obviously a position of a deep concern on the offensive line. The wide receivers to me is is really interesting. We know ridley russell gauge clearly. The to starting guys It looks like right now. Elimidate zacchaeus is going to be wide receiver. Three although taj sharp has been really making a push up but you still have that fourth in that fifth wide receiver spot and potentially six. Many of us are sort of assuming the falcons go with five largest Here but you've got guys like frank darby who they drafted Austin trammell who really looked at the beginning of camp but got injured has you know has been quiet since.

"I mean jalen mayfield. At tackle was pretty bad. I think that's not a surprise. He's guy that didn't have a ton of reps in college. He only started eighteen games due to injury in cova. And that sort of thing always a guy that i pretty much thought was wasn't nfl guard. I think he can certainly play tackle in a pinch. But i don't think he's ever someone that i thought would be sort of level prospect as an nfl tackle. And i think you saw y you know. His length is is an issue. His size isn't the isn't the greatest and while he's a bad athlete at tackle below average at guard. he's actually pretty good athletes. I think he defected. He is sort of transitioning to the left guard battle. Now probably what. The team always sort of wanted from him. But auden let you you get the first shot at this. We mentioned it. Jelly may feel did get started today. When josh andrews had to leave for cramps he's moved into the second team left guard spot. How confident are you. If it was jalen mayfield. Starting in week one at left guard. Still not very honest with you. This this is going to be a position of weakness one way or the other or another just like it has been a position of weakness since Since andy Parted ways with the team. Jalen mayfield especially now. I think the team kind of botched it a little bit with jalen mayfield. I think they should have. Ideally been you know prepping for that left guard battle from the beginning from day. One because you know he was drafted someone with the idea of transitioning to a guard like i don't think he's a tackle at this next level in the nfl but he can he can pass as You know maybe one day. A a solid guard. But he didn't get. That opportunity wasn't fair to him that you know the team. Just put him into that right tackle role which he probably would not be ready for especially in year one. He's probably not gonna be ready for a guard role in your one but let alone tackle so for me that just took away weeks of potential developmental time guard especially would especially someone who played tackling collagen. You you wanna transitioning over to this position at the next level you know i just. I just think that this was a blunder by the coaching staff. To be honest. And it's one of the few blunders. We've seen from this coaching south thus far. But especially now i. If if you told me the jail mayfield going to be the starter in week one. Would i be happier than with josh andrews. I mean sure yeah. Yeah but that's not really saying much. Yeah cut you're still talking about like an unproven rookie. Who you know who many of us didn't expect to really contribute in year one when he was dropped Taking the reins of that position. And you know overall. I the only thing that would make me confident in the opposition would be to go out and make make an external lou for a guy that's non currently on the roster i mean but you know maybe maybe mayfield improvement wrong. Maybe drew dolphin can prove me wrong. I mean i hope. I'll be the first one to say to tip my cap to them if they do. But you know right now. I'm not exactly competent. These rookies are the answer in twenty twenty one rank guard. Yeah it was always going to be a tall order. And i was. You know. I think pretty bullish on jalen mayfield at guard and i and i think if it was like look i mean it's it's what you said. It was an easy decision if we had to choose between josh j. Mayfield at left guard. Start the season and we didn't have any other options. It's obviously jalen mayfield. And it's because like he can grow like he. There's a chance that he starts out very shaky. But by the end of the season he's solid buff guard and those giving him those reps even if they're bad like that does have value whereas giving them to a career backup like josh andrews who we know is bad and who's not gonna be here in future years. It's a waste on both accounts. So that's kind of where i'm at. But yeah evan did you ever take on on. Jalen mayfield hopeful. His prospects at left guard this year. Or are you still hoping for a veteran signing trade at this point Well if it's all about like winning this year than yeah signing or trade or something I agree with what you in on non were saying about. You know the best way to for him to grow is to be in that position at struggle early. Where like joshing andrews. I mean it's safe to say we know what his ceiling is He's not all sudden. Gonna turn into a pro bowler where mayfield you know. I'm not gonna say a pro bowler but he's got realistically more of a chance because we don't know what his ceiling is at a position. He hasn't played or josh injuries. You know what you're getting out of it So yeah i mean. If if that's the route they ultimately decide to go with. Luckily we got two more games so we can kind of see you know. Maybe he'll actually didn't play at left guard and give us a better idea. I know he was looking okay at The like joint practice or whatever. Yeah yeah you know. Let's see it in a you know a real game I'm no what's preseason but like you know it's more of a game than a joint practice so Yeah but i'm i'm not too optimistic on either one being a great left guard right out of the gate anyway. So i'd rather give it to mayfield just for the as you pointed out the experience. Yeah yeah and i think especially if is playing poorly you just kind of have to get like. Yeah go ahead. I was just going to mention one thing too. Is i know you mentioned. Pf earlier two guards actually finished in the top five offensive grades for the team in. That was sam jones. Who's right guard. Got a seventy then And left guard ryan news who a technically the third left guard got a sixty six point two So you know that doesn't mean anything though but it's still like okay. Maybe you know. There's some talent there toward the bottom Yeah no that's a good point. Because i think we should talk about positives to and i think if you're looking at offensive line positives it's pretty limited. But i think those guys that you mentioned sam jones who played a little bit of center and a little bit of guard and ryan news all the undrafted..

"O o line group so it's entirely possible it's just gonna take them a little bit longer to gel so i think we could see significant improvement in week. Two of the preseason but the big red flag to me and this is kind of the main point is that we did see one starter on the offensive line quote unquote starter. I guess you could say and it was josh andrews and for a guy that is sort of being pencilled in as your your week when starter at left guard with a bunch of backups. And against a bunch of backups. I think you would want that guy to sort of impress and look like he's sort of a tier above everyone else and it was the opposite he was arguably the worst of the players on the field and that second team unit and they're certainly something to be said about a guy playing better when he's surrounded by better talent. But i mean against backups. You should be able to hold your own. Josh andrus was one of the worst graded offensive lineman on the team. This doesn't shock me and it doesn't shock anyone who follows. Pf for has looked into josh andrews previous career before coming to atlanta that he's always been a very poor pass. Protector per f never graded out as even an average starter in his years in the league and that doesn't mean he can't ever get there but putting a lot of faith in this guy to suddenly sort of turn his entire nfl career round and requ starter. Doesn't seem like a smart plan to me. Evan how do you feel about sort of josh andrews situation. Now that we've actually seen him in action. i mean. obviously it's as you pointed out something to make you nervous He could be one of those guys that if he's with starting unit maybe he does play better. Hopefully that would be the case. But that's why. I think we have preseason the kind of get these kinks out Left guard you know maybe mayfield is going to make a push there. I think i saw. He was playing with the twos according to twitter. Or maybe the ones. I don't know reps with the ones today after joshua's left for negative or no. No that did happen. We'll talk about that later as well but yeah yeah for sure. He did get some reps today. Yeah yes so. Josh andrews shouldn't be considered the starting left guard Because i mean as you mentioned. He looked that bad against backups and stuff against tennessee. Why should we expect more. You know with him starting but again it's preseason while see what happens against miami. Yeah yeah i mean. I certainly think that it's worth sort of taking some time and not totally giving up on somewhat after you know just a single performance but it's definitely alarming to see so. Yeah odd and on your thoughts on the josh andrew situation right now. Are you at all confident in his abilities. Or are you going to be sort of Throwing up rachel words if the team ends up going into week went with him as the starter. No-confidence josh andrews a team starter. Like what this isn't like jalen mayfield. Also looked pretty bad out there where this is the first time you've ever seen him you know in pads in an nfl game. Josh andrews has a history of not being very good in in his nfl career. And we know especially in today's modern. Nfl game pass blocking is king. Like you can be this. Isn't the eighties anymore. Where If you're a good run blocker your you can kind of you know. Make it in the nfl that that's one of our players from a few years ago. I think it was ben garland. I'd guard for the falcons was actually one of the top three or top five rated guards in the nfl in run blocking grade but he was outside the top one hundred in pass blocking in as a result he's no longer on the atlanta falcons. I say this because Andrus is of in okay run blocker and he is a putrid pass blocker. i mean it's it's heinous. How bad of a pass walker. He has his f score last year. Impasse liking was like an eighteen point. One which was i think. The second worst among all offense lineman in the entire third word on so no. I'm absolutely i zero confidence in him. And you know. I don't even if you line him up next All pros if you line them up next to ryan genz net center in david bahktiar left tackle. Who are the Premier players the position. I don't think he'll be very good. Because if you suck you suck leggit you can put me in the falcons offensive line. It doesn't matter how good the guys around me are. Like the defender still getting through me. And you know dr andrews. I've i don't have any confidence in Fortunately i think the coaching staff knows all of this. And i'd be shocked if andrews is the week one starter barring an injury. Yeah yeah. I totally agree there and you know i tweeted it out but i think it's worth mentioning guys that we're going to probably see some roster tinkering but i think it's going to be after the preseason not during They had an open spot today. You know that they fill today with defensive. Lineman eli an coup. Who's just sort of a undrafted sort of camp by they. Had you know they have some defensive line injuries they wanna make sure they have enough guys out there to play with the reserves but i mean they could have filled that spot with an actual scientists get compete for the roster and they still didn't so i think what that tells us is this. Is this this front office at this team is sort of taking a wait and see approach. They're gonna let the preseason play out. But i don't think that means that they're done. I think they're going to wait. 'til tell cuts and i. They're going to see who's out there. They probably got some guys in mind. I wouldn't be shocked if they've already had conversations with guys like possibly nick. Eastern stephen was news. Sort of the guys that i'm advocating for but there's other guys out there too and there will be veterans. Let go of their always are surprised cuts. There may also be the sort of like. I think both both of you guys mentioned it. But andy levitra you know that sort of a last minute trade after the offensive line but totally abysmal and day traded for and deliver at the last minute for six round pick and that was a huge addition to the offensive line ended up being a great move. That's also very much on the table. So just because they haven't made a move yet doesn't mean it's not going to happen so that's important for folks to remember in terms of other notable guys in the offensive line..

Did i ever google anything about well. I think this is an easy one. And i think you guys might be on my side with this when they were he was in close contact with the band and they all have phones and they have a youtube channel and geo location match your on youtube it matches you know you guys are in the same place at same time so there you go and It's simple i mean this. This one's a. It's a no-brainer. I had the same. It's just no reason to be just the same like reason like when i was taking my kid to preschool That all of sudden the parents for the other kids at the school started a pop up in my facebook. You may know this person thing which i did not want to see them in a night did not want to become friends with them because they just happen to have kid going to the same damn school. It's because every single day our phones were in the exact same locations together Yeah it's the same thing and this also comes back to the. My phone is listening to me argument because okay. You're with two people. You're talking about the same thing you split up. The other person could very well justice. He's go google it it since you were in the same place. They can infer that you are at the same table talking about the same subject. If there's a time limit around when that person googled and your interaction with them very simple cross-reference there So i think this is the same type of creepy nece that they all. Do you know just because your phones are in the same location the same time. They're gonna they're gonna find those factors in they're gonna put you together. That's what they do and there was that case from a few years back and it may be apocryphal but it was swear pizza delivery person got robbed and then a few hours later. The robber came up on their facebook as someone you may know. I don't remember that crackdown. Yeah they are able to track down the thief because he popped up on the person's facebook as and it was. It was exactly this. They were they were in the same place at the same time and so the app said you might know this person. And that's how they tried. It doesn't matter of fact i do. I get my back please. The law of unintended consequences sometimes has a sense of humor. I got this last one here. Scammer service will ban anyone from instagram for sixty dollars. This comes from now anyone. You can almost get nearly anyone. Because i would. Let's say i will. I will pony up. Sixty eight bucks to get. Kim kardashian banned from instagram almost anyone. Oh my god yeah. It actually a dark net. Diaries about this not too long ago. Where this guy kept getting harassed by these scammers saying that They they wanted their their handle. This guy had a really nice handle and the guy wanted it and like pony up. Or i'm gonna make your life. Hell started ordering pizzas to his house and sees troll hacker little nobody and then. He finally got him banned from instagram. So he could you know maybe hopefully get the the handle later or was one of those. If you can't have it nobody can type of things The guy ended up befriending him. The the hacker troll. It's a great episode. Recommend going back and listening to it because it ties right into this and it's just one of those things where you know. There's a loophole where you can get people band fairly easily on these on these platforms because there's no. There's no adult supervision or human oversight anymore. No there's no real customer service accounts and there's nobody to call and there's nobody to reach out to and there's no board that's going to review things and put the time in actually do a study of what happened. There's no internet police. No and there's like you've said that time and time again. Yeah here's a here's a case. In point my roommate like dealt with somebody and got a crappy zillow review from this guy even though it was their their their beef was nothing about real estate but he went on her zillow account and left a nasty message to you know put in a review requests. And they're like no no. this seems valid. This is an automated reply blah blah blah Escalated to a human. The human looked at it. No no no. This looks legit to us. They never had any dealings whatsoever. And it stuck out as a one star review on there and there's no recourse for things like that none whatsoever and i mean. How are we supposed to respond to the people that give us one star ratings on apple i to take them on the air you turn lemons eliminate contents in the thing i keep saying over and over again i keep shouting at cloud switches if you can't do that thing at scale than maybe you shouldn't do that thing. "For the falcons that we can actually get a really good feel for because everything else if you're if let's say this upfront if you're freaking out about the offense don't it's the preseason it and honestly with the defense you may be feeling really good about the defense and with good reason it is different. It's fun but again nothing that you saw in that. Preseason game predictor or as an accurate predictor for let's go happened regular season except maybe special teams so that is again why. I think we started with that. So any last thoughts on what are special teams units. Did we did see young. Miss a long field goal but not the end of the world. I think and i discussed. He's his accuracy. Once you start getting into the fifty fifty three yard. Yeah it's changing fall off. Yeah yeah and and you know it's kind of been masked over because of obviously going to the pro bowl and have an onside kick talent that he does But yeah when if you're expecting him to make up fifty five yarder or something. It's a no brainer. Like don't end as not the case ending writer. He's not that type of kicker. But you know. I think it is interesting. That as it's been mentioned before cameras iliac or whatever is He was a placeholder for two when to win. Perfect fourteen fourteen in. As twenty nineteen So you know. They're familiar with each other. Maybe that helps play into cameron making the as a starting punter because as you know the team loves a good story anyway so that's a good one. Oh absolutely is and coup is for better for worse. Inside of fifty. He's very good And i think you even last year. I think out of the fifty plus range. He did fairly well. But i think he's had some shaky kicks there. He obviously missed the long one on friday. I'm not. I'm not freaking out about it. But i think that You've mentioned it before. You know he's not brian in that regard So we should keep that much All right let's talk about the offense so yeah so first of all Arthur smith had a rookie tight end. Cal pits dress out. It looked like competence was going to get into the game and then he essentially sat on the sidelines. So we did not get the cow pits. We saw almost primarily backups except for one player and that one player who was not a backup who's legitimate starter was left guard. Josh anders and i was mentioning earlier on twitter. It's all that we can talk about in the comic writers chat because josh andrews against a bunch of backups. Was god awful at that left guard. Spotlight noticeably the whole line was bad but like andrews was bad enough to stand out in a bad line and obviously going up against backups. You would hope that one of your future starters Is going to be better than that. So i think there. If you're looking for an immediate take away at least for me. It's the falcons probably needs to look beyond josh andrews to shore up that guard position because he did not look good at all Am i off base with that. Evan do you feel like that's probably One of the more alarming things about an offense that looked like garbage. Yeah no i think anybody who wants the game definitely agree um in. I think he was getting more the focus anyways from fans watching it because knowing he potentially the starter there left guard. the rest of them are depth. So wasn't i mean unless you're really into the willie reverse Stop and he. He struggled just like everybody else With andrews it could be one of those things where he's better when he surrounded better talent That's actually thing. So i don't know One game i'm not gonna go ahead and write everyone else but yeah that definitely was not start where you come away on. Yeah this guy should be are left guard okay. Well let's see what else we can do there but you know maybe give him one more chance but yeah that leaves a bad taste in your mouth and that's fair you're right you know. We should give it more than one game but if we see anything similar because more than likely the next preseason game The falcons will probably have their starters out there. I would expect for no more than like two or three series mayday four series at most depending on how things go if he is to your point. If he's with the starters and he looks better it could be a very valid point that he's just someone that has to be surrounded by better talent for for him to lay well Which is not the other world but also outside sorry to cut you off go ahead go say you know. And also arthur smith is lynn. Like literally was an offensive guard at. Unc coached offensive lineman. So it's not like we have a defensive coordinator trying to figure this out like e should be able to figure out who he wants there And we'll see going forward but definitely have an offensive line binded coach Making the decisions whether they end up bringing somebody else or they give him another shot. Maybe maybe he was on purpose to see how he does with the backups. I don't know and honestly this is one of those things where a lot of times in the preseason and the coaches admit that they do this and this is something to keep them on. They put their players in the position to be in one on one and they want to see how they hold up. Even though in game situations it may never come down to that But they wanted to know how these guys can you know. Hold up One on one against a defensive tackle Defensive end and this is something where it could just simply beat it. He doesn't accelerate situations. I think we'll have a better feel next week Again i do think. We'll probably see the starters out there for a very brief period of time. But we should see them and if he's out there at left guard as our starting left guard it will be our best Indication of where he probably stands. And whether or not the falcons new to replace him but he is a name sort of my red list right. now we're going to certainly pay attention to him Now the quarterbacks know matt ryan didn't even dress which was no shock and in fact no meaningful starter on their side of the ball actually dressed for this game And we we ended up getting a half of aj mccarron first. Half in the second half was fully bay. Franks i for one have not. I've i've been harping on. How boring mackerras is a quarterback. He he doesn't have a very big arm. He's sort of a generic quarterback that you would know what you're getting with him. Yes yeah. I mean like you know. His ceiling is yes and he's hit that like right now. He is a marginal backup at best in in the nfl. He is a journeyman backup. That is it. And that's why he's why he was available that's why he's here I actually think if you have between him. And matt shaw. It's not even close like shaab is would be leaps and bounds better than aj mccarron but franks at least has some potential some upside. So what are your thoughts on what you saw from the to. Qb's again with the caveat that sorta like everyone around them was sort of terrible. So it's hard to really get a a solid assessment of either of these guys. Yeah that's the important. A the offensive line was awful for both of them Franks obviously has more mobility and he displayed that on that huge Fifty two yard run But yeah if offensive of lines broken down both of these guys you know are naturally gonna struggle but mccarron made some bad throws one of which went for an interception There's actually two. But i think it was like it was pass interference or something In franks a you know. He went to for nine. But i would say like three or four. Those passes were literally just dropped draw He was pretty accurate for the most part I would definitely give the leg up to franks in this battle. Mccarron just did not look good at all. "In falcons i twenty twenty one preseason game at home going up against the tennessee. Titans this is arthur. Smith's first game as head. Coach of the falcons. And obviously we're going to start with the offense where arthur smith would be the play caller this year. It's why he was brought in. He was a brilliant play caller for his two years with the tennessee. Titans and obviously we want to see that tonight. We'll the starters play probably not Key starters like matt ryan calvin really at most. You will see them for one series i would. I would be surprised if we even see him for that But i would think if we see him for one series. It's going to be one and done Guys like that. They just simply don't need the time on the field in a preseason game now the offensive line. I think this is where we could see a good bit of variety and see a bunch of guys who are competing for spots. See guys who have been competing in camp at different spots the first name willie beavers. He has been out there right. Tackle it sounds like they're going to give him some run at left tackle now. Why would they do that. It looks like What they have in mind for. Beavers is for him to become the swing tackle with matt gono out for an unspecified period of time. He has not participated all camp yet. we still don't even know the full extent of his injury They need a good swing. Tackle someone that can Man the left or the right when called upon and it looks like beavers is moving to the front of that list right now so expect to see him. Get some play at left tackle Definitely something to pay attention to To see how he performs their which leaves the right tackle spot open for jalen mayfield to try to take that one back over kalem. Gary is not gonna play because of just recently getting back into training camp in this past week so expect to see jalen. Mayfield the rookie. That we took our third round getting there at right tackle for good bit of the game. I'd be surprised if he doesn't play the majority of the time. They're so definitely name to pay attention to now in the middle of the offensive. Line matt hennessy. Center more than likely going to be the starter. I do expect to see him for this game. They wanna give him some reps on the field. And i think it'll be a good opportunity for him to really get the experience that he did not get as a rookie last year. Now left guard. I think we're gonna see a rotation josh andrews right now is the in the lead to take over that spot. The veteran but drew The player we drafted out of stanford. This year has been getting some snaps at left guards. That's a competition. Look at and pay attention to in this game. It's josh andrews gerdelman. i think we're going to see those two guys rotate in that left guard spot. And so we're definitely going to pay attention to these key battles on the offensive line. If arthur smith is going to have an explosive offense a high scoring offense this year it's going to start with offensive line. And there are several question marks that We need to see some developments at these positions as for the rod receivers again. Don't expect calvin really to play much It's gonna fall back to guys like christian. Blake chris roland doin. Green alumnae zacchaeus. Who has been getting a lot of looks. Third wide receiver. Probably the front runner right now. Taj sharp who is bigger receiver is also going to get some significant opportunities in this game. And frank darby the draft pick the all of the media loves to talk to high energy guy he's shown flashes here and there this this'll be his first opportunity to prove what he can do in an actual game so definitely something to watch for their now. The tight ends obviously hayden. Hearst being somewhat of a veteran probably not gonna play much. what about cockpits mets. A great question. I do think we will see him out there somewhat. I think though. Arthur smith probably wants to keep him under wraps until the regular season. So while i think we will see pits more than the other starters. I don't think we're going to see him in there for an extended period of time Likewise the same will be true for lee smith which means a tight ends in this game. It's gonna really boil down to three guys. Parker hessy ryan becker and john rain. John rain is a name to pay attention to a mentioned in the previous podcast that he was getting a lot of attention with philippi francs. On the saturday practice looks to be a fairly good receiver out of the backfield. He can play full-back he could play tied in. He's more of that. H back tight end sonata full-sized guy but sort of like an aaron hernandez sized tight end and he is someone that got a think one or two first team snaps during the week so he may be moving up the chart definitely pay attention to him in parker. Hessy with the absence of jaden graham. There's a spot opened for that. Fourth tight end spot and Don't under sell it. The the importance of that position jin graham was a key contributor on special teams. So how parker and john rain and ryan. Becker can perform from a special team. Standpoint could really make the difference here. I think right now parker hessy is assumed to be in the lead for this position because of his past experience being with the tennessee. Titans when arthur smith was there but john rain is sort of a dark horse candidate. So keep an eye on him now. The running back situation. mike davis obviously right. Now is the pennsylvan- starter. I don't expect that to change quarter. All patterson is a veteran. We know what to expect with him. I don't think there's any need to put him out there. Honestly quadrille listen. Probably won't play because of the fact that he's been in the yellow jersey for most of this week during the practices non-contact until he gets fully healthy. Wouldn't expect to see him. Play much in this preseason game which means it's going to leave the running backs to recently signed dante foreman caleb huntley jv hawkins this is going to be an excellent opportunity to see where these young guys stand a form and obviously has been in a league for years. I don't really think they signed him with the intention of him seriously competing for a spot but obviously if he shows out he could earn a spot on this roster. I still think this one is down to caleb huntley and jv and hawkins who have both looked good and camp but honestly looking good and camp means nothing compared to these games so both of these guys definite names to watch for sort of that fourth running back spot. assuming that allison is going to be the defacto. Backup to mike davis and so yeah huntley and hawkins definitely keep an eye on these two guys see how they perform See the opportunities they get. These are the two most important names. I think on the offense to pay attention to because these are guys who can legitimately contribute during the season as well as for quarterback again as i mentioned matt ryan unlikely that he's going to play more than the series if that It's primarily going to be. Aj mccarron and felipe. A franks and honestly. We'll probably see a lot more. Franks i think the falcons wanna see what he can do in with extended playing time. Franks is a higher upside player than mccarron. We know what mccarron is Franks has got live arm. He's got some athleticism. He obviously has some accuracy issues but he has a player that i think the falcons are hoping they can develop into a good backup over the next year or two so definitely going to keep an eye on franks so we're going to talk about the defense and what to look for in a key players there but before we do that we'll take a quick break. Chris lindstrom or concerns with kayla gary. Now let's talk about That left guard spot because center. There's not a guaranteed starter there Let's talk about some of the names. That right now are at the top of that list. I think If you were to ask most people who do you think would be the day one starter at left guard if it was built just around who's on the roster today i think most people say it's probably gonna be josh andrus. Who is the one of the few veterans in this group. And we'll talk about the the youth on this roster in just a minute is in. My mind is probably gonna be josh andrews. The other name. I think that people are sort of clinging to as someone that the again for reasons you mentioned in the first half a non is someone that was drafted by this. Regime is jalen mayfield The rookie out of michigan Who is sort of a consensus head. Scratcher of the draft but a lot of people feel like There were other guys that could've taken when they took mayfield. Maybe his draft position didn't make sensors talent but left guard a andrews mayfield. Anyone else what do you think about position. And how concerned you that this is a question. Mark thing into the season this other than edge. Right now is the biggest question mark on the balkans roster completely. Because you know i understand. Love guard has been a position of weakness for the past few years. Because thomas dimitrov could not evaluate offense to save his life and he had a you know gave james carpenter up some big money to play a below average football for the past few years. But you know two carpenters credit. He was better last year than he was on the year before that like he wasn't carpenter wasn't an abject disaster out guard last year his pass. Blocking was you know solid sixty two according to a pro football focus and you know he someone who still someone whom. I'm sure the fan base isn't losing any sleep over him leaving and you know i'm they're welcoming him now. Being on their offspring mortga josh andrews last her endless light joe. Josh andrews his pass blocking he may james carpenter. Look like david brock. Dra concern. I mean like his pass blocking great according to pf was in eighteen point one word. I almost didn't even know that it could get that. Low it among among offensive lineman who played at least twenty percent of their team's snaps lost. Your josh andrews had the third lowest ask blocking grade in the nfl and this is among like over two hundred players along the offense line. So you know. He's someone who is always a below average passed last year was was really the first year where he really you know kind of playing time. He had fewer than one hundred snaps Of time before last season and last year he was just dreadful. Also you know hopefully like you said. Arthur smith can work some agic with him. And but you know. I'm going to be incredibly incredibly nervous. If he's lining up at left. Guard for the falcons. But you know right now is the proverbial favorite is because jalen may feel is pretty raw like jalen mayfield's feels like a pick you make per year to right but he may have to. You know be thrown into the fire and your one right away because you know daily mayfield. Someone who played at the tackle position in In most assignment college. But he's gonna take into a guard. Position is because he's he's better suited for that by his skill set his ram score. Was you know pretty poor. A four point something. I forgot what ugly it was as a tackle but when he kicks into guarded it's above seven point. Oh which is which is very solid Mayfield as someone whom. I'm going to be rooting for him in this In the offensive line training camp battle. Because if we're if we're going to be week at position. I'd rather we'd be weak with a a young rookie right. Learning and hopefully improving as time goes along because josh andrews is thirty years old. I don't really expect him to be good. But you know This is why this is why. Caleb mcgarry is so important because you can have you can have a weak link along the offensive line. You're not gonna find really very many or even maybe even any offensive lines in the nfl where they have five very good starters. You know you can afford to have that. Weakness can't afford to have three positions of weakness along the offensive line. Because that's just that's just a disaster waiting up. Yeah and this is i. i'm with you. Edge is a concern but this one in my mind is probably if not the biggest. It's right there it's second With with the edge position And you mentioned josh andrews. Six years of experience. He's thirty years old It would be surprising if he suddenly became a decent starter You know that would be some dark magic dark. Lord magic from arthur smith to turn that around to that degree This past week on colic live a myself in aaron freeman of the fans of the lock. Dhanjal can spot cast a guest on this podcast. Many times we were talking about this and aaron. Basically his one of his takes was the starting left guard is not currently on the roster and He making the case that he doesn't he thinks don't ultimately either trade for somebody or look for veterans that gets cut. You know to be a flyer at left guard. And i think he's probably on something I i'd be a lot more comfortable without either of these options because remember the last time the falcons did that was with andy. Le'veon's it'll be tree right and ended up being a very solid starter. You know for what. It's worth. I give i give democrat a lot of credit for making that. That was very savvy. I think that was after the four three season game where they just they just saw. What a disaster. The line was and that third preseason game against miami and they're like all right we we can't we can't have we'll see. I'll be very eager to see. Just how josh andrews and jalen mayfield perform and you know the young guy that center course In the preseason you know then we can possibly reassess our comfort level A few weeks from now. Yeah and that's it. I i feel like we have to add that caveat for the entire offense of lying because To the point. I was making earlier. The death for the falcons on offense right now going dresden. This is there's no doubt. Yeah it looking at the roster The for the offensive. Lineman purely offensive lineman Players with at least three or more years of actual experience in the league. There are three players for the offensive. Line Jake matthews matt gono and josh andrews who we just talked about otherwise injured. Yeah and ain't to exactly ghana's injured so to healthy players.

He's only just never other than his rookie season ever had a. Pf grade below seventy two and a half in a single season only started all sixteen games. Every single year sense is rookie season. You know so you know. I don't know what people do dislike jake matthews for some reason. I can't put my finger on it. What could possibly be that. People don't like budget matthews. I refuse to acknowledge that such a thing could even exist if there was a big time game that perhaps you made a mistake in you know. I think i must have forgotten about it but you know so. That's all i have to say about that. But we love jake. We love you. So i didn't say anything specific. Okay if you guys inferred something from that statement. That's all on you so but yeah alright. Aaron you can get started with your next bold prediction okay. So this was the other one that i thought was. Maybe the bolt the boldest one in relation to my other twenty eighteen draft class baldwin So you guys tell me if it's boulder outcome less bold You know speaking of big man. He was talking about the position next to him. Left guard position prediction the week. One starter at the position is currently not on the falcons roster. I actually like this. Because you know if it's josh andrews. I think i'm going to be sipping some moscow mules just about every sunday. So do you have a player in mind or you. Just don't think it will be on the roster. I i don't know if this player is necessarily the guy but i've been reading some reports looking at other teams fifty three man roster predictions and i'm i'm keeping an eye on that kansas city chiefs offense of line battle because they added a bunch of guards this all season and i know a player. That's firmly on the bubble. Was andrew wylie a player that started in super bowl and really struggled at right tackle but he was kind of playing out of position and when he's played guard he's been a much better fit for them in plates and left guard for kansas city in twenty nineteen as well and he sort of seized beyond on the bubble. But you have other guys. The ron do for cardiff. And if the falcons were to make a eighty lavizzari like trade for a player You know do nato. Nea would be a decent candidate in that regard. But i think he's job might be a little bit safer now that kyle along dealing with his injury or whatever the so he might be able to be plugged back into starting. Right guard spot Moving forward but yet you know like people know people who regularly listen to lockdown falcons. No wasn't a huge fan of the mayfield pick And so while. I feel like jalen mayfield. Is the front runner to win. That left guard spot a whole lot of optimism that he's going to earn it. He just gonna basically be better than josh andrews which you know based off of how josh andrews is performed in the past It's not necessarily the highest bar to clear. So i i feel like you know we might get a repeat of what we saw in two thousand fifteen when dan quinn within his first off season and it kinda shuffled up that o. Line and then you know we. We got a preseason game against the dolphins and Thanks to earl mitchell in derrick shelby exposing some of the weaknesses. On our falcons off into line we got to complete reshuffle their and guess who were playing again. This preseason in what will probably be the progress rehearsal game again in to the miami dolphins so It shout out to manual blah. And whoever else they got over miami that will probably wind up exposing this offense. It seems to happen every summer. We go back two years ago. The jets game Where tyson below got completely worked in the foster. Basically like eight Gary you haven't even practice yet but you're the starter now because that's how bad it just feels. I don't think. Arthur smith regime is going to break this curse where it seems like all of our dreams come crashing down in the preseason because on the offense so we'll see how it goes at least this year it'll be expected. Try joshua josh andrews out there at left guard. Your no one's gonna be surprised if he gets blown up. So yeah i mean there are some you know. Free agents out there. Potentially you know. I know people have floated nick eastern. I've been a big proponent of steve steven was new ski as a stopgap guy not necessarily somebody's going to be a huge impact starter. But a guy that you know. In a sort of chris chesser sorta way can kind of keep the ship afloat and not be like a total liability. Also he can play center which is always a plus but yeah. I mean it's pretty slim pickings other otherwise you know we could have. We could have. The ben garland reunion ben. Girls similar thirty three years old. I always forget that he kind of had a late start to his providence in atlanta. But yeah i mean. I i agree. I think if i think it's going to be julie mayfield at left guard and i'm like in some ways fine with that Part of it is. Because i think arthur smith is not necessarily gonna leave as offensive line out there to dry like every single play like cutters seemed to be willing to do like okay guys like go block for three four five seconds on this deep pass and then you'd watch a bunch of pressures given. That's our offense. That's how we do it. So i don't think arthur smith is gonna ask that nearly as often. I mean i'm sure they're going to dial up deep self dialup play action and it would be nice if they could protect for that sort of stuff. But if it's a great run blocker. So i think if they are serious about let's try to quote establish the run and just get back to more balance i think jalen mayfield will be fine in terms of the run game as a pass. Protector guard you know. I don't know he hasn't played guard. So you know. It's probably not going to be great but i don't think josh gray there so there's certain point it's like well we might as well. I'd rather have jalen mayfield being bad than josh andrews being bad because at least mayfield's getting reps and as a guy that you're hoping that can improve i just i don't understand the fascination with josh andrews. The coaching staff seems to have. Maybe they'll make us all look silly. Maybe josh andrews was just languishing new york under adam gates which you know that would be the first time we've heard that so yeah but Yeah twu got any offensive line. Takes their at left guard as erin was saying that i went to the falcons website to look at offensive line. And.

Flatman is not a guaranteed. Unless you're things yeah. So yeah. So i i like that. We are also hearing. Is oliver getting the first chance in the slot. Play a lot better there. Yeah so you know. That's that's cool. avery. Williams and darren hall. I don't you're the one that's watch holiday. You think he's more of an outsider slot guy in the nfl. I think hall was more of a balaji corner hall is is going to be the one that's gonna give sheffield a fight for that russia spot. I think halls gonna make the roster. It'd be now he's you know he's gonna saying like if if sheffield wants to stay on the roster he's gone best that's one guy that he's going to have to be better than and i'm not quite sure he will be to be honest with you. darren hall is the what darren hall has that jeff doesn't show is this stakes are gonna stand out or did he ever harbor interception already at some point otas rookie navy. Maybe that yeah. I think he was the one that did come down with something like his first. The first or second Rookie minicamp so it was like this right there. He's already showing went as better than kenosha. Yeah that's the thing like an indian. Ps defense you just gotta be opportunistic. And like i think. Ship dan quinn. You know. Valued athletes at corner a lot. More and i think we've seen from the two picks the falcons had they went after guys. Who were ball hawks. Some guys that are opportunistic. Because i think the fa- dp and the facts understand like look. We're not going to out talent. He went on defense especially this year. So like we just need to come up with like a turn if we can average like one turnover a game better like that might be enough for our offense like if our offense is what we think it can be and we can run the ball a bit better like we might not need to be a great defense. We just need to create a turnover to shorten the game a little bit and then we could get by with blitzing and kind of covering up in papering over the weaknesses on this defense by being aggressive. And look. we're gonna make mistakes too. But i think that's the best strategy so we said that after the draft we pointed out the fact that what they have in the secondary right now are are a number of guys that are able to capitalize on turnovers because of their ball skills. This is going to be a. We may not see a guy that has the visit sax this year. I'm willing to bet that. But i think we'll ps is going to try to incorporate. Is that aggressive front. Seven and a back in a secondary that is able to make those plays. Because again you're going to see you wanna see some rush throws you're going to see some overthrows piracy's and tip passes. You're gonna see some some quarterbacks that are fluster trying to make a play and on backing unique guys that can turn into receivers with the ball near. And that's what they did with darren hall and enrichment so yeah. Yeah so it's yeah. I think the secondary is kind of coming together a little bit. I mean. I think it's gonna be great. But you know as opposed to where we stood after they cut ricardo allen. And let walk. And let davante as you walk like. It's doron harmon. Richie grant eric harris eight. That's decent three safety group. Like i mean it's not maybe the highest end group in the nfl but it's very versatile. All three of those guys can play in the box poor deep or cover to look so they can move around like the. Mp's likes you know. I think the corner group is not great. I mean we'll have to see how the rookies do. And i do think they make another addition cornerback or a linebacker. Probably the two most likely spots that are maybe edge on defense but like like. Jc jackson would be perfect like that. I think would really take this over the edge. You don't have to force fabian. Moreau to star outside. But i think they'd be moreau's probably better as like your corner three your primary backup and then you. Can you have oliver in the slot or whoever but more rose. I think i think so. Too honestly. like marc mckee's farm jesse jackson. But yeah right is. He's not he's not. You know a special type of talent but you know. He's i think he's gonna be just fine out there he. He played very well at times in washington on edge it was it was the slap where they try and the washington try to make him be a slot corner in s mathis day. And and that's where he that's why he went awry I think a like a monday or manage. Yeah yeah. I liked that a lot better to see. We'll see what darren hall and avery williams. Like i don't know if he's going to get a lot of run on defense this year but i think they're going to see what they have and see if they can trust him to play the slot in the future. Maybe he's a guy that just needs more experience. I think but. I think his freshman and sophomore year. She had eight and nine pass deflections in each year. So he's a guy that can get his hands on. The football size is really his thing. So we'll see if We'll see if he can carve out a role too. But yeah i mean williams's path will be special teams and we haven't heard too much about how that competition between him enroll into going. But i think darren hall. Probably pretty safe kendall sheffield. Is someone who we talked about. Probably going to have to show something in camp. Unless he's banking on them keeping six corners which we know dean pees likes to run a lot of three safety stuff so you know them. Keeping six is not a guarantee they might want to keep five safeties. Tj green guy. A lot of people don't know he did. Green is a good player. Like he's he's a decent. You know extra safety and they still jalen hawkins too so they might want to keep five safeties. I think a lot of that also is going to depend on. And we got. We just got done with this. What is not the result of a. Julio trade is far as clearing that castaways because they get the cap space that they're looking for they're going to have some extra cash to to bring in some free agents all season and you're still a couple of guys at there on on the market as safety that i think you know the team may give a look me cooker is one guy that comes to mind Often injured but you know if he's healthy and he's he's able to incorporate those ball skills as well right.
