"Today's case brings us back to January fifteenth of Nineteen, Seventy Four, and if you're listening to this episode, Live on Release Day, we can tell you. It's been exactly forty six years six months and eleven days since a significant day, the movie blazing saddles was in theaters and songs time in a bottle by Jim Crow Chee and the joker by Steve Miller band were topping the charts and the setting for today's case Wichita Kansas. That's the largest city in the state of Kansas and the. LARGEST, city in the United States. Geographically speaking Wichita is located in south. Central Kansas. Nestled against the Arkansas River. In Wichita birthplace of both pizza hut and white castle, making a fast food wonderland of sorts. And another thing that this fine city produced the outlaw. Will Bonnie also known as billy the kid? which saw Kansas has many suburban neighborhoods, the kind of neighborhoods that are perfect for raising a family and that's exactly where Joseph. Otero and his wife Julie planted their roots in decided to raise their children. This family consisted of thirty. Eight Year Old Dad Joseph. Thirty four year, old mom, Giulio Tarot and the Otero children, nine year, old Joseph junior eleven year old Josephine, thirteen year olds Carmen, fourteen year old Danny and fifteen year old Charlie. It's a big wonderful family name on this particular morning of January fifteenth, Matriarch. Julie Woke her children for school at around seven am. The older kids were running late and left school with their dad at seven fifty a m. As Joseph was pulling out of the family's garage to leave driving his children. His son Charley started to close the garage door as the car was pulling out. But Joseph stopped him and told him to leave it open because he was returning right after he drove kids to school, so charlie obliged. She listened to his dad. He got back in the car and off. They went. Sculpture proceeded as normal for the kids and at the end of the day the three older children. Walked tone. And it's not clear whether the children normally walk home, but we do know is at the time. The Otero family only had one working vehicle because there other car had been in an accident and it was at the shot being repaired. When the kids got home, they couldn't open the front door, so Danny went around to the back, and he tried to get the back door open, but that was locked to so danny goes back around to the front of the House, and he somehow manages to unlock the front door. Once they were inside the first thing that children saw was the contents of their mom's purse spilled out onto the living room floor. They look to the kitchen and they see their father's wallet on the Stove. A child's lunchbox was on the kitchen table josephina Joseph Juniors winter coats were on the living room, couch, and an open loaf of bread, a knife and several jars of sandwich spread were on the kitchen table. Some of the pieces of the bread were slathered with Mayo, and some weren't, and it was kind of as if somebody had been interrupted when they're making their sandwiches, and there was also a gallon of milk left out next to the kitchen sink. Next to the half made sandwiches. There was an open can of Pairs. One of the chairs at the kitchen table was pulled out. And there was a pair of men's shoes under the chair. The three kids knew something was just off, and they walked around looking for a sign of either their mom. Their Dad or they're two younger siblings. They went upstairs towards the master bedroom. And that's where they made a horrifying discovery. They saw their parents lifeless bodies. The frantic children attempted to cut the rope from around their mom's neck and the ropes around their father's wrists. They removed the gag from their MOM's mouth with a set of toenail clippers and tried to revive her. Danny then went to get a knife to try to cut the ropes off of his father's hands. And there was also a belt around his father's throat, which loosened and he then tried to revive him. But his father's chest was just very stiff. Danny ran to the phone to call for help. But when he picked up the receiver at the line is dead. So we started out of the house, found neighbor, and they called the police. When the police arrived at the scene, it was three forty pm, and they were met by Charlie. Who was just completely distraught? He told him that his parents were inside. There were in their bedroom and they were tied up. The police told us three children to stay outside and stay calm and try to comfort them. Please entered the home. and. It was neat orderly. The only thing out of place that stuck out to them initially was this. person the floor in his wallet on the Stove, and obviously these things in the kitchen, which made it seem like somebody had been interrupted making lunch for these children. Officers moved through the house towards the master bedroom. They. Push the door open at approached shows, if senior who is clearly deceased and lying on the floor of the master bedroom. There is and moved to a piece of white rope and a large butcher knife that laid next to him. Julia. Tara, was on the bed. Her legs were hanging off the side, slightly bent. Julia was wearing jeans a housecoat. Her feet were bound the ankles. She'd indentations around her neck, and there was one piece of rope tied to the north corner of the bed. There was blood around her nose and around her mouth. Neither Julia or Joseph had a pulse. Julie's hands were still tied behind her back, and there was a white gag rules to her head, which was stained with her blood. And when Charlie Danny and Carmen their three children were questioned by arriving officers. They told them that they lived at this home with their parents in there too little siblings, Josephine and Joseph Junior and they didn't know where they were. The older siblings became distraught over the idea of having to tell the babies of the family that their parents had been killed, but that was something that they'd never actually have to do. Because the reality of the nightmare that was unfolding in real time that morning was about to get so much worse than anyone on the scene could have imagined. Inside the home, one of the officers was attempting to clear the house room by room, making sure the perpetrator who attacked Julian Joseph senior word no longer on the premises. And it's in an upstairs bedroom that this officer Shirley made one of the most horrific and haunting discoveries of his entire life. Through me entered was clearly the bedroom of two children, there were bunk beds and boys toys everywhere. And in the center of the floor, was the lifeless body of Joseph Otero, junior he was wearing his school close a long sleeved button up shirt, jeans and socks. And, we are going to describe his injuries because Joseph Junior was nine years old, and we're not here to describe injuries inflicted on children, gratuitous or detail. But it wouldn't be long before. Four horrifying discovery in this home was about to be made. As the search of the home continued. What are the officers descended the stairs to the basement. And it was there that they found the body of eleven year old Josephine. Like the case of Joseph Junior rocketed, discuss her injuries or the circumstances under which her life was cruelly taken. As News, the massacre spread to say the community was shocked. Devastated horrified doesn't begin to describe the kind of impact. A crime like this has on a neighborhood. And many of the most grizzled police officers will never see examples of such cruelty across thirty year careers. The Tara home was seals off and law. Enforcement set up a command post an old school across the street from the House. It was revealed that the families Brown nineteen sixty eight Vista cruiser station wagon was missing from the garage, but it was found later that same day in the parking lot of a grocery store. Then the search for the person who slaughtered this family commenced. In the thing is. Is that no one on the scene that day? Realize that this search would be one that would stretch over more than three decades, because the murder of his family be the first four murders of ten that terrorized and continue to haunt the suburbs of Wichita Kansas to.

Cheers me maybes. Cheers. Canton Tuesday, January fifteenth, nineteen. Seventy four in Wichita, Kansas as expected. This was a cold day and like most other days fifteen year old. Charlie. Oh, terro counted down until the final school. Bell rang three o'clock, Charlie collected his things, and he made his way outside. Charlie was fifteen years old and in the tenth grade, it was his duty as the oldest child together up his brother and sister and lead the charge home back to their little White House with black shutters on north edge more street. The family had only been in town for a little more than ten weeks. They were still figuring out the logistics of their new life together. In Wichita, they still had boxes of household items that were to be unpacked Charlie's brother. Danny was just a tad younger at fourteen years of age in their sister, Carmen June. She was thirteen. Now their home is not terribly far from their school. So it was a short walk on a cold day when they arrived at the little house, the door was locked as usual in the family. Dog lucky was out in the fenced in backyard. Pacing near the gate. Charlie used his key to unlock the door when they entered the home. They noticed the kitchen had been left in a strange manner. It was incredibly hot inside the house. Charlie expected to see his father, Joseph, their father. Joseph was a hardworking, man, but he had practically been confined to the home after a recent car accident. In the kitchen, open food. Containers were sitting on the counter tops, and it looked like someone was making a sandwich Charlie called for his father several times, but got no answer the three kids walked the house, looking for their mom, dad little brother and sister. Anyone who may be home, Charlie opened the door to the master bedroom and walked into a horrific. Seen his mother lay dead on the bed, his father lifeless on the floor, Charlie called out to Danny and Carmen. June. Both parents were bound at the feet and wrist. One of the children grabbed a knife from the kitchen and the children cut bindings from their parents. This was a hopeless effort as both had been dead for a couple of hours. Charlie ran to the kitchen, grabbed the phone receiver hanging on the wall and called zero for the operator. Charlie listened, but heard nothing as the phone was dead. He would not be able to call police or medics. He shouted for Danny and Carmen to join him. As he ran to the neighbor's house, they pounded on the door. And luckily their neighbor was home, they told him that they've found their parents dead and their parents room, and they called the police while they wait for police to arrive the neighbor ventured to the Toro home to see if he could help in any way. He saw what the children had seen, and he knew it was too late the first to arrive on the scene war, the medics. They arrived just five minutes after the call was placed when they arrived. The three terro teenage children were standing out front waiting for their arrival. The children were begging for the medics to go inside and help their parents. But the MTA explain that for now they would have to wait for police to arrive on the scene to clear the house and give them the okay to go in when the neighbor man was describing. NG to the first responders. What he had saw in the bedroom. The medics began to think that they might be at the scene of a murder suicide that maybe somehow in a fit of rage Joseph had killed his wife and then killed himself. Let's get into the investigation a little bit to to get a better understanding of what may have happened to these two people in that house that day while the children were at school, just one point out something that supposedly it's a murder suicide, but we have legs bound arms bound, right? Well, that's where I think the confusion comes in. So and what we will see happen here is the children when they found their parents. The parents were bound at the hands and feet, right. Remember the children went to the to the kitchen. They got a knife in, they cut the bindings from their parents trying to revive them or save them or something. So when the neighbor goes into see what had happened all. He sees Joseph, the father dead on the floor, the mother dead on the bed, and there's a knife lying next to Joseph the father, right, right. So he tells this to the medics and the medics are like, crap. This is a these. These kids just walked in to the result of murder suicide of their parents. So inside the home captain in that master bedroom, the two people that were found dead were Joseph Otero junior who is thirty eight years old and his wife. Julie aged thirty four. The taros have five children, three of which we have already introduced. These are the three oldest children. And again, they were Charles who fifteen. Danny, who's fourteen and Carmen, who was thirteen. They had walked home from school and found their parents dead in the home. The other two children attended a different school. They were like their older brothers and sisters. They walked to and from school as well. But they were younger. So they were an elementary school Charlie. The oldest of the children did not want his little sister Josephine who was only eleven and his little brother. Joseph age nine to see the swollen stiff bodies of their parents like he had. So Charlie stayed on the scene to help in any way that he could. But he sent Danny and Carmen off to intercept the younger children before they can make it all the way home around this same time, a police officer had arrived. This is officer Bulla. He went into the home and made his way to the master bedroom. He stepped into the room. He saw the bodies of Joseph and Julie. He touched their skin to gauge temperature. Both bodies were cold and stiff as rigor had set in. They had both been dead for a few hours and Joseph body would be lying on the floor on his back. Now, next to Joseph was a plastic bag and a knife. Julie was barefoot and her body. Was on the bed. She had dried blood around her mouth and nose. She had some bruising around her neck as well. There was some type of cloth lying next to her. Now, her feet were still bound by white cord strips of cord. Lay next to each of the bodies. Someone had opened all of the drawers to the dresser in rummaged through them. Okay. So I want to go over some information provided to the police by Charlie or the other children, and we kinda got into this a little bit before, but just to kind of clear it up. So the knife next to Joseph's body was the knife from the kitchen that the children, it used to cut the bindings from around his wrist. Right? So not from the perpetrator. So that also explains the chord lying next to Joseph. The plastic bag had been on Joseph's head. There was found next to him. This was removed by the children as well. The cloth that was lying next to Julie was actually, again. That her daughter had removed when they found her the cord lying next to her had been tied around her hands. So they, I thought, maybe a murder suicide. Like we talked about this because of what the neighbor had described. However, the neighbor had not realized that he was seeing it was an altered crime scene altered by the children trying to save their parents. Very brave of them to for the children, try to save their parents. Yeah. So now now the police know that both of the victims had actually been tied up and left that way when the children had found them, then the officer made his way to another bedroom inside this room to his shock and surprise. There was another body. This was little Joseph. He was found dead in his room lying on his side next to the bunk bed. He and Danny shared that room him in his older brother in the room with him or a phone book and a share with a broken leg. The chair was. Another room and had been moved into the boy's bedroom. Why the investigators did not know the boy had been tied around his ankles and the cord ran from his ankles up behind him and bound his hands together behind his back. The boys hands were swollen to about three times the size of their normal size. The boy's face and head were covered with multiple items, T shirt and two plastic bags. All hooded the boy's head. The officer then set off to search the remainder of the home. Could the killer or killers have left something behind? Could there be some trace as to who had committed these hor- horrible murders after searching the main level officer bowl of venture to the basement, the basement was dark and he could not find a light switch. So he were lied on the light of his flashlight. Once at the bottom of the stairs, he moved the
