"You're out of black men in there with that much money and that just name clout that's coming back to the blue jays at the marlins trade all over again when you think about it. your headline which aus- johnson mark burleigh and jose reyes With some other guys thrown in like john buckingham. Osceola but Yeah i i think we're going there craig. is absolutely right. I mean the rockies. Just give away or an auto. Surely the blue jays can probably negotiate. We'll take on all the money and sure you can take russians. And maybe that's something that you got right there years three years for blackman layer options right. That's interesting eighteen is when i sovereign our amazon. What you were saying for in terms of price yes. He's twenty one twenty one twenty one mill. Twenty one mill than thirteen melt. The last two years are player options which at age thirty five and thirty six rate. I don't i don't see him getting out. He'll a lot one year of money for the rockies to get back. That could be critical. Right you're left could be especially knowing that it a player option really gonna turn down the money. No that's what. I'm saying looking at forty two plus thirteen. So you're looking at fifty five million dollars that the rockies have to be adhered to potentially and like we said he's probably not gonna opt out of those years plus the auto money which is substantial. You'd be doing the rockies favor all but can i ask this question though. Isn't that same fifty five million dollars better than throwing that same amount of money at jackie. Bradley jr. yes all reacted your job will sit the because if you'd includes if it includes a narrow nado than yes it does and at that point if i'm taking on all the salary you're looking at over one hundred dollars if i'm taking on all that salary i'm saying you get groshans and we get marc as black men and araneta. We'll take on all the salary that's it because we're more than we're giving you one hundred million dollar relief all totally. That's what you're trading for. Plus excuse yes part of that could be. It's just a balance out the money a little bit. Be like take ted aerobics. Twelve million and cannot but look craig where you're going with that package let let's say black included in this and you go aaron auto you take all this money you get more cast in there and i think you're right. I think it might take five guys to get this done. I think you're looking at danny danson. I think you're looking at a rowdy. Potentially maybe an outfielder. Let's leave lord assata this discussion. Maybe yaas cards in play maybe grischuk and then this is where it will get interesting. I still even know who he was a year ago. I still do. I i still. It takes sword groceries. I still think it would take a sim in which richardson ornella. Minoa or a cloth. Stein if you start getting that expensive do still bat by an ad. Both of those guys shapes johnson. Let's say for argument's sake t oscar out of it. Let's say let's in. Let's say it's groshans. Let's say it simian would richardson..
Next generation nuclear is a step closer to market
"The way we produce electric power is changing Minnesota generated twenty five percent of our electricity from renewables like wind and solar in two, thousand, nineteen and nationally coal electric power has been cut in half in the last decade and many utilities planned to go much further but going completely carbon-free is going to be tricky. Extracting alternatives such as natural gas still emits carbon and many states are looking to retire old nuclear power plants. So engineers are developing a new kind of nuclear last month. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave its first ever design approval to accompany working on the technology. That company is new scale power and here to talk about it is co founder Jose Reyes previously, he was the head of the Department of nuclear. Engineering at state. University Jose. Welcome to climate cast. Well, thank you so much for inviting him. Excited to share with you our technology why developed smaller nuclear reactors there are many parts of the world that don't have the grid to support a thousand megawatt electric nuclear power plant or they don't have the capital to invest in such large projects a so it really developed it so that it could reach a wide market and so we're looking at small module reactors. Each of our module of only produces sixty megawatts electric So not power or a forty, five, thousand homes in the US. Now I budget, we designed the plant that would house up to twelve of these modules, but we also have configurations of packs or six packs. So it's it's very flexible in in terms of where we could deploy these designs, Jose? What would these reactor buildings look like? Well, it looked like an industrial building as opposed to the LARCH containment domes that you associate with nuclear power. Each reactor is factory fabricated our containment vessels only about fifteen feet in diameter about seventy feet long So it's a very different configuration. What's the climate benefit of these smaller nuclear power systems? A company called energy, environmental economics each three. They performed a study for Washington state that showed that the least cost path to achieving percents clean energy out by twenty forty five was to include small module reactors. Assault new schedule meets with twenty nine utilities. Every six months utilize from Canada in the US many of them have coal fire plants which needs to retire, but we design our plant so that we can repurpose those coal fire plants and we can also retrain many of their workers to work at a do scale plant. So a twelve module loose gambling. Would avoid over six million tons of CO, two emissions per year, and so that's the equivalent of taking one point three, million cars off the road each year. Are they safe? Yes these are extremely safe reactors. This is a very unique design in that under any a worst case conditions of the reactors will shut themselves down without any operator action without any AC or DC power and Alamein cooled for an unlimited period time without the need to add water. So how soon can we realistically get to reliable carbon-free energy production? Are Design courses now approved and so that means that customers can start looking at how to a reference are designed in their integrated resource plans, and so that's very important. First step sob think we can make a very big impact in helping states, beat their clean-energy holes Jose us with new scale power. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective on climate cast today. Thanks so much for having.

"Detroit has a talent gap and and a skills gap and this isn't unique to the city. It's impacting the region and the state as well. So how do we get people to work. What are some of the things to be done about it and how to do it under the current system which as much as some wanted to change it? It's the world. We live in right now without saddling people with puns of debt. Jose is the Director of workforce and Community Development for Washtenaw Community College. And as someone who's both dealt with the city directly a former job at a Detroit based nonprofit and now now working for a community college regionally he brings an interesting perspective. That conversation from the Detroit Policy Conference right after we think our members on patriarch who make the show possible symbol like Alvar. Your support really matters and thank you so much. He joins Colin Mike. Cathy and others at Patriotair Dot com slash daily Detroit so without further. Ado Jose Reyes Jose. Welcome to daily Detroit. Thank you pleasure to be here so I wanted to talk to you. Because workforce development like workforce. That's a fancy word for getting people jobs right well. It's actually more than that okay. Let's talk about that. You know workforce development. I think in some respects Max that is just getting folks. Jobs is the most cursory understanding. Okay workforce development really is understanding the supply and demand chain and again think about it workforce development is based on employer demand supply and demand chain the job seekers out of talent supply and so in the employers are where the demands are in for the skill sets and so for me is a eco-system with the educational provider somewhere in the middle In terms of Skilling up individuals so what is the state of that demand right now in our region is not just in our region I would say even nationally we have two issues at bay day. One is the skills gap which has been referred to as individuals. They're currently in the labor force. Not Matching up to where the new jobs and new technology is taking the jobs that they currently have so employers are looking how to skill up there individuals that they currently have in the talent pipeline. But at the same time we we also have a talent gap which is simply we have folks that are trickling out of their jobs as they are being you know reaching age of Retirement and whatnot and and we don't have enough folks coming into the talent pipeline and so those individuals eighteen to twenty nine we. Detroit in particular has one of the lowest labor participation rates of anywhere in the nation. Wow Yeah so you're talking. Forty seven percent labor participation. A healthy a City probably show where between sixty five to seventy percent labor participation. That's kind of stunning. Why is that well? I think part of that. We're looking at what's going on. Maybe at this city city of Detroit level within the city. Is that you also have epidemic poverty. You actually have the highest poverty in city of Detroit without any any regard for any other city There's no other city in America that has higher poverty than the city of Detroit. And so we think about that has huge what I call residual effects so again folks are poverty. Don't necessarily get the educational opportunities and as such we have generational cycles of poverty have continued Y also. No and I hear this from my listeners. All the time. There's a lot of people that either that are rather frustrated with the amount of debt that they're carrying and then also looking at opportunities going. Well am I going going to have to go and get like a huge amount of loans to be able to become you know more employable and to me. It feels like there are a lot of opportunities. Enfield's that maybe wouldn't take much so that's an interesting point. So one of the first things is that for folks that are outside the labor force career pathways and understanding of career. Pathways is huge. One of the things I did as the CEO of Detroit and point solutions was actually invest into technical Education Centers in partnership with Randolph Technical Education Center was the first place that I actually worked on trying to create a polytechnical school. That would the open for the youth during the day but in the evening be open to the adult so the parents in those communities because this is generational from this standpoint so we wanted to make sure that folks understood where these career pathways are and then provide equity track for them to actually obtain the the skill set that they need it and again I think you know you know we talking off off off the Mike you know. When we're dealing with folks me this opportunity because again to unite somebody with a better quality of life? We know jobs in the economic wellbeing are two critical factors to be able to achieve that quality of life that individuals in their family deserve. And so we wanted to be sure that we can give folks those opportunities and I think there is this well always been this conception that to obese. Assess what you got to go to college in the bottom line is you can make a six figure salary without having six figure debt if you were to go into a skill trade great like an apprenticeship for you know for skilled trades like a pipe fitter carpenter because there's still a demand is more of a demand today than it was. There's so much demand Matt I mean think about specifically in my north neighborhood there now trucks and crews from other states coming to work on homes and to me. It's kind of crazy crazy. I mean I. It is the concept of journeyman right because people they travel for this work but it is predominant. It is something where I'm looking there going. Wow wait a second. That's a broke broke Brooklyn area code. I look at the plate and I'm like. Oh Wow that's Philip like Pennsylvania. What are they doing? Working on House rehabs in the city of Detroit but I talk to be live and talk to the people doing it. Some of them are not major project. Owners they're just a couple from somewhere or whatever they're like we could not get workers or people would tell. Tell me there's a six month. I had something done on the house. I live in and the contractor literally said well I can see you again maybe in June on and that is just not going to work for People Jeremiah spoke to that in real detail. which is you know? The construction skilled trades is really a agile group of individuals. They go there where the projects are with opportunities are and so you know I think you know Detroit at point time when it was you know. Detroit prior to World War or two was one of the richest cities in the world and one of the largest is still right. One hundred thirty nine square. Miles is one of the largest cities in America as well. But you know I think thinks some things have happened. Pulse war to that out on the economic downturn as a result a lot of our construction skilled trades journey. Men's went to where those opportunities were or we're at that time so some went down to the state of Texas and started to build up those areas as Atlanta came on so we lost a lot of that skilled trade Labor Labor that we had and they went to the where the opportunities are now. Because the city is in this resurgence and it's building itself up in reinventing itself it now l. has need for that talent. You know we saw it with district. Detroit when I was in the workforce a Detroit Employment Solutions You know we have twelve thousand folks come through our portal looking for opportunities construction skill traits so as more you know opportunities for development go on more and more folks get that idea that hey I want to be part of that well and it's not just limited to construction I mean I see companies like quicken and IT companies technology companies. All trying to hire and find people and and I mean a lot of them are having a heck of a time doing it. You know it's funny. You mentioned that you know one of the things that I did once. We got the what we call the Detroit Register Apprenticeship Program Program or D wrap as it was affectionately known as underway the other piece I looked at as we're the we're the hot jobs were it healthcare and so we started looking at. Can we apprentice size those opportunities in a way or create special initiative. So one of the things we did was create tech higher. It was actually a initiative by the of Obama Administration but we took some anchor employers that were in the region that had technology needs and did eight week boot camps. We then spun off of that and I call.

"Now it is totally possible that something like that is secretly going on behind the scenes. And we can't see evidence of it in court. But from the transcript of what did happen in federal court today, it does just seem like this delay is happening because Paul manafort's defense team can't get it together. I mean to federal trials back to back against experienced aggressive prosecutors, including the possibility that the first trial might not actually even be over yet. Special counsel's office is due to tell the court in Virginia tomorrow whether or not they're gonna put Manafort on trial again, whether they're going to retry him on the ten felony counts where the jury wasn't able to reach a verdict in his case last week. I doubt that Wall Street Journal's reporting last night that Paul Manafort and his team may have talked to the special counsel and his prosecutors about the prospect of some kind of deal to make the charges in the second trial go away, but. It doesn't appear that any such negotiations are the reason that manafort's team is trying so hard now to slow this thing down. So the news about this minor delay in Paul manafort's next trial is set today. There's new trial date in terms of went, opening arguments are going to start. This comes though amid new reporting from the Washington Post tonight that the president himself continues to be basically losing his mind, overt. The Russia scandal writ large and the legal inquiries, the legal investigations, the prosecution's that have sprung from that scandal so far we're gonna have a little more on this coming up later on in the show. But bottom line, the Washington Post is basically reporting tonight that administration officials have been doing the sort of delicate dance. They've been cajoling the president and consoling the president and basically trying delaying tactics with the president to try to keep the president from firing attorney general Jeff Sessions in an effort to end to the Russia investigation. And it's related prosecutions as I say, we will have more on that in a moment. We actually have a former very senior Justice department official here tonight. He left the Justice department quite recently. He's going to be joining us for his first TV interview since leaving government service here tonight. So we will talk with him about that and more. The other important thing going on here is that the president of course isn't alone in his crusade to try to dismantle or roadblock the Russia investigation and all of its component parts by going after key personnel and officials who have connections to different parts of the investigation. This is from an almost. Lyrical portrait more than twenty years ago. It was written in nineteen. Ninety-six was published in the New York Times about the head of a drug gang in the Bronx and the criminal organization that he ran in the Bronx quote when the history is written of the drug gangs of New York in the nineteen eighties in the mid nineteen ninety s the kind that rectus cities nerves helped create record high murder rates and made gunfire a common sound. In many neighborhoods, the author of that history might want to spend a chapter on Jose Ramos, or as he was known l. fail, calm, charismatic and predatory Jose Reyes rose to become both dealer and supplier building an empire operating in a neighborhood doused and drug money. Mr. as was a general in an army. He also devoured books on the mafia. He read Machiavelli, argued, LeBron's philosophy anti killed, managing a hit team that left a trail of rivals dead in Manhattan and the Bronx. He. It was so well insulated that it took law enforcement authorities, several years to even hear of his existence when they did. They were often amazed at his reach two months ago. Mr. as was convicted of running a drug organization and of killing seven men. This guy's name was Jose Reyes. They called him l. fail, which means the ugly one. And it was one of the legendary gang prosecutions of that whole era, his whole organization. But also he himself indicted in one thousand nine hundred four. They tried l. fail the tried Jose Reyes in federal court in New York City. The judge deliberated for eight days when they came back, they ruled that he was guilty of seven murders, which meant of course life in prison. Prosecution was led in part by an assistant US attorney in the southern district of New York who was thought of as a bit of a brainiac before law school..

"Like for example, it's hard to get on base in the first place right now, but do you does the stolen base, make baseball more exciting for you? Are you said that it's been going away because it does feel weird to have a league almost leader right now with twenty eight of them? Yeah. Yeah. I think it does make me set like stolen basis. I mean, it makes sense that we know that it only benefits to steal base if you can do it a certain percentage of the time and lots of players who tried to do it couldn't do that and now have realized that the canton thought better of it. So I get it, but I think it does make baseball more exciting when there's a better chance that the guy could go on any pitch. And the play itself is pretty exciting. Tag plays are exciting. So I think it's probably worse for baseball from a spectator perspective that they're fewer steals. Yeah. So I'm, I'm just looking over the the yearly league leaders for for stolen bases because I've, I kind of forget. I've. Just been alive and monitoring sort of sabermetrics ear and know last your d Gordon did steal sixty basis. I don't know what was like a good ura for steals. I mean, I know that you can go back to the visuals Ricky Henderson. Yes, but I mean, even just going back to the nineties before I think people were decrying that baseball was dead. You look at I dunno nineteen ninety six was baseball dead in nineteen Ninety-six. It was coming back. Can't locked still seventy five days every year since the nineteenth century. So yeah, baseball has been doing some remarkable things considering it's been dead for I dunno hundred twenty years or something, but no one, no one has surpassed. I dunno eighty who's the last player to steal even eighty basis in season. It looks like unless I am misreading this going way too quick. It looks like it would be Henderson and Vince Coleman in nineteen eighty eight. But since then we've seen a few seventies Jose Reyes stole seventy eight in two thousand seven. Just keep that number in mind right now, the league leader is TRAI Turner. With thirty two. That's just over half this many as Dee Gordon stole last season. Because again, if you're the NATs you're out here just trying to kind of come down from what's going on at the trade deadline. Bryce Harper was the one big name. We really had to latch any sort of storyline onto around the trade deadline, and that's a stressful thing to see in the news. I'm sure for a team that we talk about is only five, five and a half games back in that. Division might still have something to play for down the stretch. People not ready to trust some of the teams in front of them. All these things that we've heard already, but still you at your best players name floated out there and trade talks for a few days. You had your best player potentially leaving town. You already understand that that's coming this off season potentially having to deal with that. And so what's the perfect rebound you go out, you put up numbers like this against the Mets on Tuesday, five players with at least three RBI franchise record five players with at least three hits tied for second most in franchise history. "So the Yankees have this pretty comfortable leader up seven to three in the ninth and you know they're cruising people are even thinking about, should we bring in Domingo's Vado for or seven on the United pronounce lessening, but. Seven to ring seven for the ninth inning. I taught about. I mean, there's like. Okay. Well, we don't really have anyone else to pitch, but you know. So it's either shreve Chavan her seven, but. They bring in Chapman. Vado I think is I don't know. I'm trying to think twice people forget that when I covered this on Anki in twenty fifteen, he was there and we had a great relationship. People do forget that you're correct. Adam Siro Strada some others anyways. So Chapman comes in and he hasn't pitched in a week. That's why they wanna leave some work. And he's been battling this whole knee thing all year, which they keep saying it's not a big issue when it definitely is an issue that needs to be addressed because it it's coming up way too frequently. I feel like. Saying something on this, you should probably an issue completely. I mean, in every walk of life the way you like when you say, oh yes, Nobile we deal. It's probably deal like he got it address so he walked plucky to start the inning resolve your reaches on the infield single, and then tikey comes up pension for Matt den Dekker. Tie Kelly is hitting one hundred on the year. He I'm almost certain I could get Todd Kelly out like he's, he looks so fragile and small at the plate like in. So like lifeless and China walks him on four pitches, none of which were close. All fastballs. Nothing's close. Then Jose Reyes comes up. Jose Reyes might be the worst player in all baseball walks on four pitches. It's seven, four. I'm like, sitting in bed what is going? I'm going to screaming what is happening, what is going on? It's just like it's, it's like a nightmare. Just unfolding getting worse and worse. You don't get any worse. And then brand name comes up. And of course he gets hit by a pitch and it's. Five and still no one's warming up. No one, it's seven, five of the base load. Nobody. No one's warming chasing. Shreve gets hot, comes in real quick changes, freeze coming. I Chavin through eleven SRI balls. Eleven is so hard to do. How do you get pulled for chasing trees? It's time to revaluate on things like probably it's a big issue when you get pulled for chasing shreve. It's a match. I, I love Chapman. He's awesome..
