Next generation nuclear is a step closer to market
"The way we produce electric power is changing Minnesota generated twenty five percent of our electricity from renewables like wind and solar in two, thousand, nineteen and nationally coal electric power has been cut in half in the last decade and many utilities planned to go much further but going completely carbon-free is going to be tricky. Extracting alternatives such as natural gas still emits carbon and many states are looking to retire old nuclear power plants. So engineers are developing a new kind of nuclear last month. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave its first ever design approval to accompany working on the technology. That company is new scale power and here to talk about it is co founder Jose Reyes previously, he was the head of the Department of nuclear. Engineering at state. University Jose. Welcome to climate cast. Well, thank you so much for inviting him. Excited to share with you our technology why developed smaller nuclear reactors there are many parts of the world that don't have the grid to support a thousand megawatt electric nuclear power plant or they don't have the capital to invest in such large projects a so it really developed it so that it could reach a wide market and so we're looking at small module reactors. Each of our module of only produces sixty megawatts electric So not power or a forty, five, thousand homes in the US. Now I budget, we designed the plant that would house up to twelve of these modules, but we also have configurations of packs or six packs. So it's it's very flexible in in terms of where we could deploy these designs, Jose? What would these reactor buildings look like? Well, it looked like an industrial building as opposed to the LARCH containment domes that you associate with nuclear power. Each reactor is factory fabricated our containment vessels only about fifteen feet in diameter about seventy feet long So it's a very different configuration. What's the climate benefit of these smaller nuclear power systems? A company called energy, environmental economics each three. They performed a study for Washington state that showed that the least cost path to achieving percents clean energy out by twenty forty five was to include small module reactors. Assault new schedule meets with twenty nine utilities. Every six months utilize from Canada in the US many of them have coal fire plants which needs to retire, but we design our plant so that we can repurpose those coal fire plants and we can also retrain many of their workers to work at a do scale plant. So a twelve module loose gambling. Would avoid over six million tons of CO, two emissions per year, and so that's the equivalent of taking one point three, million cars off the road each year. Are they safe? Yes these are extremely safe reactors. This is a very unique design in that under any a worst case conditions of the reactors will shut themselves down without any operator action without any AC or DC power and Alamein cooled for an unlimited period time without the need to add water. So how soon can we realistically get to reliable carbon-free energy production? Are Design courses now approved and so that means that customers can start looking at how to a reference are designed in their integrated resource plans, and so that's very important. First step sob think we can make a very big impact in helping states, beat their clean-energy holes Jose us with new scale power. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective on climate cast today. Thanks so much for having.

"Detroit has a talent gap and and a skills gap and this isn't unique to the city. It's impacting the region and the state as well. So how do we get people to work. What are some of the things to be done about it and how to do it under the current system which as much as some wanted to change it? It's the world. We live in right now without saddling people with puns of debt. Jose is the Director of workforce and Community Development for Washtenaw Community College. And as someone who's both dealt with the city directly a former job at a Detroit based nonprofit and now now working for a community college regionally he brings an interesting perspective. That conversation from the Detroit Policy Conference right after we think our members on patriarch who make the show possible symbol like Alvar. Your support really matters and thank you so much. He joins Colin Mike. Cathy and others at Patriotair Dot com slash daily Detroit so without further. Ado Jose Reyes Jose. Welcome to daily Detroit. Thank you pleasure to be here so I wanted to talk to you. Because workforce development like workforce. That's a fancy word for getting people jobs right well. It's actually more than that okay. Let's talk about that. You know workforce development. I think in some respects Max that is just getting folks. Jobs is the most cursory understanding. Okay workforce development really is understanding the supply and demand chain and again think about it workforce development is based on employer demand supply and demand chain the job seekers out of talent supply and so in the employers are where the demands are in for the skill sets and so for me is a eco-system with the educational provider somewhere in the middle In terms of Skilling up individuals so what is the state of that demand right now in our region is not just in our region I would say even nationally we have two issues at bay day. One is the skills gap which has been referred to as individuals. They're currently in the labor force. Not Matching up to where the new jobs and new technology is taking the jobs that they currently have so employers are looking how to skill up there individuals that they currently have in the talent pipeline. But at the same time we we also have a talent gap which is simply we have folks that are trickling out of their jobs as they are being you know reaching age of Retirement and whatnot and and we don't have enough folks coming into the talent pipeline and so those individuals eighteen to twenty nine we. Detroit in particular has one of the lowest labor participation rates of anywhere in the nation. Wow Yeah so you're talking. Forty seven percent labor participation. A healthy a City probably show where between sixty five to seventy percent labor participation. That's kind of stunning. Why is that well? I think part of that. We're looking at what's going on. Maybe at this city city of Detroit level within the city. Is that you also have epidemic poverty. You actually have the highest poverty in city of Detroit without any any regard for any other city There's no other city in America that has higher poverty than the city of Detroit. And so we think about that has huge what I call residual effects so again folks are poverty. Don't necessarily get the educational opportunities and as such we have generational cycles of poverty have continued Y also. No and I hear this from my listeners. All the time. There's a lot of people that either that are rather frustrated with the amount of debt that they're carrying and then also looking at opportunities going. Well am I going going to have to go and get like a huge amount of loans to be able to become you know more employable and to me. It feels like there are a lot of opportunities. Enfield's that maybe wouldn't take much so that's an interesting point. So one of the first things is that for folks that are outside the labor force career pathways and understanding of career. Pathways is huge. One of the things I did as the CEO of Detroit and point solutions was actually invest into technical Education Centers in partnership with Randolph Technical Education Center was the first place that I actually worked on trying to create a polytechnical school. That would the open for the youth during the day but in the evening be open to the adult so the parents in those communities because this is generational from this standpoint so we wanted to make sure that folks understood where these career pathways are and then provide equity track for them to actually obtain the the skill set that they need it and again I think you know you know we talking off off off the Mike you know. When we're dealing with folks me this opportunity because again to unite somebody with a better quality of life? We know jobs in the economic wellbeing are two critical factors to be able to achieve that quality of life that individuals in their family deserve. And so we wanted to be sure that we can give folks those opportunities and I think there is this well always been this conception that to obese. Assess what you got to go to college in the bottom line is you can make a six figure salary without having six figure debt if you were to go into a skill trade great like an apprenticeship for you know for skilled trades like a pipe fitter carpenter because there's still a demand is more of a demand today than it was. There's so much demand Matt I mean think about specifically in my north neighborhood there now trucks and crews from other states coming to work on homes and to me. It's kind of crazy crazy. I mean I. It is the concept of journeyman right because people they travel for this work but it is predominant. It is something where I'm looking there going. Wow wait a second. That's a broke broke Brooklyn area code. I look at the plate and I'm like. Oh Wow that's Philip like Pennsylvania. What are they doing? Working on House rehabs in the city of Detroit but I talk to be live and talk to the people doing it. Some of them are not major project. Owners they're just a couple from somewhere or whatever they're like we could not get workers or people would tell. Tell me there's a six month. I had something done on the house. I live in and the contractor literally said well I can see you again maybe in June on and that is just not going to work for People Jeremiah spoke to that in real detail. which is you know? The construction skilled trades is really a agile group of individuals. They go there where the projects are with opportunities are and so you know I think you know Detroit at point time when it was you know. Detroit prior to World War or two was one of the richest cities in the world and one of the largest is still right. One hundred thirty nine square. Miles is one of the largest cities in America as well. But you know I think thinks some things have happened. Pulse war to that out on the economic downturn as a result a lot of our construction skilled trades journey. Men's went to where those opportunities were or we're at that time so some went down to the state of Texas and started to build up those areas as Atlanta came on so we lost a lot of that skilled trade Labor Labor that we had and they went to the where the opportunities are now. Because the city is in this resurgence and it's building itself up in reinventing itself it now l. has need for that talent. You know we saw it with district. Detroit when I was in the workforce a Detroit Employment Solutions You know we have twelve thousand folks come through our portal looking for opportunities construction skill traits so as more you know opportunities for development go on more and more folks get that idea that hey I want to be part of that well and it's not just limited to construction I mean I see companies like quicken and IT companies technology companies. All trying to hire and find people and and I mean a lot of them are having a heck of a time doing it. You know it's funny. You mentioned that you know one of the things that I did once. We got the what we call the Detroit Register Apprenticeship Program Program or D wrap as it was affectionately known as underway the other piece I looked at as we're the we're the hot jobs were it healthcare and so we started looking at. Can we apprentice size those opportunities in a way or create special initiative. So one of the things we did was create tech higher. It was actually a initiative by the of Obama Administration but we took some anchor employers that were in the region that had technology needs and did eight week boot camps. We then spun off of that and I call.

"I really don't I don't know if this function is worse than what it was with when Matt Harvey was there yeah now it's true yeah. How is that possible? You're right <hes> they don't even know where to turn and add to it all this bobby Baena thing now the wilpon will claim this is a great deal this is they've saved so much money paying eight percent but just that we got our annual reminder last week or a couple of weeks ago that Bobby I'll be Baena is still on the payroll. I don't think it's a great deal because they're not factoring the factoring into the bad publicity surrounding this Baena contracts there's articles written every every year about it and I it becomes a punchline to the organization and the organizations the target I know what would you have signed the Baena deal if you could have I guess so. I don't know if you've seen bobby always eaten at all but <hes> yeah I don't know here's the thing like it's gotten to the point. Now I think the Wilpon to make money off the deal so in any you don't really realize that there's probably a hundred different deferred money contracts out there that people don't know about but the mets are the ones that always get made fun of because it's Bobby Layman and and then you go look and I even tweeted it out like happy by today's the day you realize that he's making five hundred thousand dollars more repeat Alonzo <hes> yeah and and like it's the laughing stock all the time and then July fourth hits and the ball team since the whole baseball field on fire so I mean it's just like it's one thing after one thing Tony Byrne took his shirt off at one time when I was there and tried to fight Aa team when you can keep going on all the stuff that had happened <hes> under the Medicare and that was under one minute. I was demand general manager so we'll find daily are Mnaya back that I mean like so like where do you WanNa go. Do you just WanNa be eighty one and eighty one every year because that's basically what you tell the mets fan every year besides when I was there and I'm sixty seven and south that fell because Oh six seven gave it a right and Jose Reyes were kids that were home grown and if known for their lap when the Marlins didn't get the stadium myself Delgado the marlins picked up all of our contracts they went out assigned one guy. They signed Carlos Beltran. If people remember Delgado turn down the mets to sign for the Marlins he didn't WanNA come to New York right so like when people always say oh they spent them at data spend the money on the six minutes. It just happened to fall right place. Wait look at our starting pitching staff. He trachsel John McCain over Peres till huge you want me to keep going in and spend any money. It just went on their lap that we had the best starting nine. Maybe hitting nine in the last okay years old compared to that lineup January I've ever that was fun except for how it all ended when Beltran just left the the bad on his shoulders and didn't swing Yeah No. You're right going into that that was that was a fun lineup in a fun team Adam before we get off the All star thing you played in four games by the fourth appearance such a grueling schedule you get a day off every two weeks by the fourth appearance where you're looking to skip the game. We like hell. Let me stay home and laying atop in watching watching on T._v.. Or was it just as much the real <hes> it's it's a throw the fourth one I got the start which is cool. I didn't start the first three and then when I was mad I got voted in and started and now it was fun. <hes> a lot of the older guys like <hes> in Bonn and those guys have been like twelve or thirteen day would leave the fifteen. That's why I always had an issue with like wow this deciding. <hes> home field advantage at one time and guys. We're leaving in the fifth inning. I'm like Hey <hes> I want very blonde Lonzo in the ninth inning man <hes> so yeah that used to bother me a tiny bit but I always you soak it in.

"Something that made sense in the eighteen hundreds when you had the picture throwing every inning, those those six hundred seven hundred innings seasons that some of those old guys threw up that a win made a little more sense there, but in a high-scoring era, where picture starting pitchers of throwing less, the wind doesn't make that much sense as a measure and some people will say, well, some pictures can picture the score and well, that's an interesting theory. If you go through baseball history, they're very few pictures that have any significant difference in win loss record between what you'd expect based on their runs allowed and the number of runs the team scored. So it's it's giving an award for an accounting fiction. If Jacob degrom teammates were better, he would have a lot more wins and he'd be just. The same picture. He was anytime and it's just something kind of perverse in my book about giving individual award based on the quality of a players team. I don't think a pitching award makes sense if we punish a picture for having Jose Reyes as a teammate instead of say, Alex bregman, it's just kind of a bizarre scenario in my opinion. Now, there's been kind of a flip side is that for a long time in the nineties. There were a lot of actual people in media who adopted sabermetrics before teams did. So yeah, the lot, the writers lot of writers not obviously not all writers. We can talk about the non sabre metric waiters all day, but you saw the media kind of adopted moneyball type sabermetrics before the before teams really caught on. But in the last fifteen years, teams caught on very quickly. And now we're kind of at a situation where every team is a money ball to some the ball team to some degree or another. I mean, I I, I'm hard on a team like the royals, but from an analytical standpoint, this was twenty years ago. They'd be one of the most forward thinking teams in the league that says how much the league has advanced in the last fifteen twenty years even. And so the writers now are a little behind in in some of these evaluations, which is we just kind of funny how that's flipped. I actually think that. If you gave every GM ballot now they'd probably do a better job than the writer is getting the Cy Young and the MVP. Right? Oh, yeah, probably they're, they're looking at that entire. You know, they're looking at the the little things that they used to not look at you. We said moneyball there quickly. I mean everyone seen the movie the book. I mean, I think you were even mentioned at one point in that book. Correct? I think the site I could committed was mentioned briefly, once. Yeah, I, I would. I would. I would not. I wouldn't call that being mentioned to my I, I was I I was doing consulting at that time, but I never, I guess. I mean, I never did anything with the as I guess. I probably shouldn't say that explicitly, but I never did anything for the as back then. So I wasn't. I wouldn't have been part of that narrative. Yeah, shots. Awesome. For picking that up in the in the book of the moneyball reference. There's a funny story though, a friend of mine who doesn't know anything about baseball, and she's always trying to figure out exactly what it is I do for. Living. And I said, I did stuff like you see in moneyball like in the story, and she kind of took it the wrong way. She thought saying that I did stuff like moneyball meant that I was in moneyball and she thought for a while that I didn't even know this. She had thought for a while that Jona hill was playing me because of the early and both handsome guys. Wow, that's great..

Cole hamels making his first start with the cubs yesterday marked shero. Just see us all Cole hamels being the demand of old, the Cy Young winner. The guy who was out there just dominating the pirates and throw ninety six mile an hour. This guy. Welcome news for the cubs because you Darvish their off-season signing. One hundred twenty six million dollars has not worked out. Look for Cole hamels to kind of slide into that number two slot in the cubs rotation. He needs to be really good in that first start. Any was the pitch twelve yesterday. Then Brian dosier hit his first one is a member of the dodgers and game as Monte granddaughter eventually walk off for LA in the tents right now. Rutledge we got cubs dodgers in the National League. I'm gonna say cuts actually. I think what they have in the pieces they've put together, especially Cole hamels going Biko hamels. I think they're in a little bit of a better spot. It's be real close though. Both these teams are dominant. I think the cubs have a better lineup when Chris Ryan's healthy, but the dodgers have better pitching. So we'll see how that works out met last year in the NL Jose Reyes made history. He gave up two home runs pitching on Tuesday night against the nets and came back yesterday and made up for by hitting two home runs. So he's the first player in baseball history. By the way the nationals won this game five to three raises the first. Player in baseball history to give up two home runs on one day and hit two home runs the following. The Mets have their best hitter is a pitcher that's that is the best hitter on their team as a pitcher.
