This is a team that has the starting pitching now to get it done. And we've seen in short series, anything can happen, and I think this team, while it doesn't have the best lineup here and I wouldn't take their lineup over what you're going to get on the other side in Toronto in a short series, it's so much of it is about the starting pitching. And I think they have enough now to keep it really razor's margin between them. Now, as for the Blue Jays, they narrowly missed out on the postseason last year. And before this year, Vladimir Guerrero, junior used a movie analogy to tell us what to expect. I think what we did what we did last year was a trailer. Now you guys want to see the movie. What do Vlad junior and the Blue Jays need to have happen to make this movie exciting and make a playoff run? Extend the analogy. They don't even have a regular season to have been a Montage pretty much. That's all leading all leading up to this. I mean, the real dramatic moment they had was the firing of their manager halfway through the season when they were still a winning team. And they have put things together in the sense that this was arguably the best lineup pretty good argument. You can make best lineup on paper coming into the season. So the Mariners certainly can stay in this one. It's going to be, I think, a great pitching matchup and at that point who can crack who and I'm just trusting that Toronto line up more than I do the Mariners, I think this one is going to come down to. Now the winner of this one gets as their reward, a matchup with last year's World Series runner up, the Astros. They're the number one seed in the American League, one 106 games. Tell us about Houston's attack. And are they the clear cut most dangerous team in the American League deal? Yeah, yeah, clear cut. No, I really think it is. This is a team that probably deserved more to be spoken about more on the glowing terms we reserved for the Dodgers these days. They are there every season. You may have strong feelings about how they got to this place, having won a World Series a few years ago, but with a team they have today, they are for my money the best rotation in baseball. Justin Verlander is healthy. He's going to win Cy Young framer Valdez deserves more respect in the baseball world. Lance mccullers just came back the back end of the season. You have Louis Garcia, Christian Javier, Jose arki. I would trust any of those guys to start a postseason game and they're going to be there for. This is a team that is going to frustrate a lot of people this fall and they're going to sit around and wait for who they have coming, but yes, I think clear cut favorite at this point. "The two teams that don't win the division to be the wild card and awfully good team is going to be out after one game this postseason if that plays out, Buster What do you see in terms of the three teams that the Giants Dodgers and Padres as what they could potentially do before the deadline to try to strengthen what already is very good rosters for each of the three Yeah, We mentioned the Mets and how the Mets have demonstrated. Look, they're going to be aggressive. I think the same thing is true for the Padres. They are all in on this season, right? And so if we get to the deadline, and there's something available that they feel like, can be difference making. I think they'll move. I tell you what the Giants have been the sleeping giants and they are the sleeping giant in his trademark it because they have all these expiring contracts of guys who are part of that. That the championship run last year for Brandon Crawford last year for Brandon Belt, only one more year for Buster Posey. So they have a ton of payroll flexibility moving forward, and if they want to flex that muscle, that opportunity is going to be there for them. You know, they've done a great job of finding pieces and getting some of those veterans back. But day to me are really dangerous team. And while the Dodgers historically have been the most aggressive team in baseball to trade deadline trading for you, Darvish one year trading for Manny Machado another year You do wonder, uh, if they'll the fact that they won the World Series last year is going to affect their aggressiveness. You know, feeling like, Look, you know, we've gotten it done. We've already got the highest payroll in baseball. Do we really need to step up? Um, I do would say that's about the Dodgers. I think even without Trevor Bauer They're good enough to win. You know, they have enough depth. And let's face it that we're asking questions about Trevor Bauer and what he would be on the mound moving forward anyway, without the sticky stuff because since the crackdowns happened, he just hasn't been nearly as effective. Last one Buster, who is the one player that come the middle of July to the end of July that will we will be talking about the most player or pitcher who will be in the most demand come the trade deadline. Craig Kimbrel, the Cubs closer, I think, you know, you know, it's interesting. There's very specific markets and limited markets for position players. Everybody can use a reliever and a team. I'm watching most closely with Craig Kimbrel, the Boston Red Sox Had him before Alex Cora had him before the Red Sox have been excellent with their bullpen. They've been the surprise team in baseball this year. No question about it. And if they want to go for the jugular, adding Kimball when he's throwing so well, uh, would absolutely be a great edition, but I'm sure that they're going to have competition for him. When the dust settles, and we look at all the Cubs trades that they make the most return. I think they're going to get on for any player is going to be Kimbrel because not only is under contract but this year, but he's got a club option for next year, and I'm sure that would be attractive for anybody get a one year obligation on a really effective reliever. "I think we're getting a pretty clear picture that most of these pictures were probably finding some way to get a better grip on the ball, and we're going to see some natural drops. We're seeing offense go up a little bit. We're seeing pictures suddenly not strike guys out. I mean, Jose Berrios didn't strike out of battery yesterday, but I mean, then strike out about that's your bed. Your best telltale sign the strikeouts are the things that raised the alarm. So the strikeouts should be something that you look at. As much as runs. Yeah, like, what's the drop like I got? Yeah. We as the strikeouts coming back down in this period of time. If the hits equal the amount of strikeouts are hits above the amount of strikeouts. That's what you have. I know we can't you not. You know, you're not supposed to look at one data point, you know so like, no, no, no, but it's one that can indicate and with with a series of other data points, like one can maybe draw conclusions. I shouldn't like single out the White Sox game from yesterday because It is. It's like this one data, but But like to what? Your Hussein, look at. How many balls were in play yesterday? Look at Jose Berrios, not striking anybody. Giolito. I love him. And I'm not trying to be a jerk. But like he had one strikeout in his last start. I mean, there could be something here where we're seeing the effects where these pictures just aren't As comfortable or they've got to work through it. "So as i said i would look to fade guys with decreases on their fastballs. That have limited arsenals. I would look to fade guys that you noticed some pretty big spin rate declines from. That weren't very good pitchers or aren't very good pitchers. If you're still a very good pitcher you still have a good chance of being a very good pitcher but if you're not a very good pitcher and you've got decent because of this spin rate decrease under some unscrupulous means or something like that. Well then maybe that's something you want to take a little bit more of a look at so a lot of stuff here with all of this spin rate discussion and these different types of things. I am going to run through here and talk some pictures dating back to thursday that have had spin rate decreases. But i need to put a lot of context to this on. Today's show so i will be doing that. And it's a big reason. Why i'm not doing the down. The line segment just to make sure. I elaborate a lot more on this especially because this is the week where major league baseball is allegedly going to crack down quite a bit. So with that on thursday dylan cease again. The spin rates were down a little bit. Did have some velocity upticks however. This start was in houston. I'm gonna talk about that. Keep that in mind. I'm gonna talk about that here in a few minutes time. Shohei ohtani a guy with some pretty big spin rate decreases in his last start also velocity some concerns there but otani a guy that you know again you wanna keep a very eye on for some of those injury indicators and all of that also thursday rich hill with some big spin rate decreases for the race and richhill somebody who popped up on the On the radar because he talked about how and they'll be didn't do enough to protect pitchers with this whole thing going on well that seemed kind of suggestive. That richhill was probably using substances upset. That the mlb didn't back up. There is that we did see everything. Dropped him although his velocity was down as well and of course you worry about the injury indicators with richhill with all of the things that he has in his background friday brad hand down once again. Nick witrh grin for the indians Down from their bullpen. Karen shack is still down. Nick sandline is still down all of that other unions bullpen does have some concerns in terms of some of those spin rate guys. The pirates bullpen. As well sam howard down yet again. Kyle crick same thing for him so guys. In the indians pen the pirates pen the braves bullpen. the red sox bullpen. Talked about these bullpens. A lot those are bullpens that concern me quite a bit but trying to pick on some of those teams looking at some full game overs and stuff like that. James cappelli for oakland down quite a bit going to yankee stadium and something. It's been kind of a challenge here. I think with some of these pictures. Is you know accounting for the environmental differences for example gallup ralian. You know he goes from oakland. Where it's you know that sort of that marine air that marine layer. You know the thing that we saw at the us open. I know san diego much further south than oakland but you of get some different conditions along the water. Then you get in say the bronx then you get in a lot of these different ballparks. So that's been kinda difficult here trying to cut through the noise looking at pitcher spin rates on a day-by-day basis and with that in mind. Jose burritos for the twins of velocity decrease for him as the twins. play against seattle. And i've noticed that a lot of starting pitchers and specifically road starting pitchers have gone to ballparks with humidors and have seen decreases velocity and spin. So i've seen this a lot in texas and in seattle and in houston and we saw a ton in arizona with the dodgers. This past weekend here so something is happening in these. Ballparks with the humidors. And i don't know if it's a slightly heavier baseball. I don't know if because of the increased storage in the humidor if he i don't know i don't know what is happening here. Somebody much smarter than me. Some of the background in physics would probably be able to explain this to me. I don't know if the humidor balls are slicker or something like that. But we're noticing. At least i've noticed here. That in texas and seattle and houston and some of these retractable roof stadiums. That have these humidors. That visiting pitchers are seeing pretty big spin rate decreases. And i don't know if this is substance usage related. I don't know if it's environmentally related. I don't know. But what i know is now i have to kind of draw a line through these because we're seeing a lot of them kinda pop up here and i think that they're also sort of skewing the analysis of the foreign substance. Crackdown where we're seeing a lot of people talking about you. Know these big spin rate drops and the drop. Cross the league and all of that to me. It looks as though we're getting increased noise from those retractable roof stadiums. That have the humidors. So those are things again. I said you really want to apply context to it's all you just want to look and say well. Jose berrios had a spin rate. Drop up got to feed him now no because that might not happen in his next. Start not pitching with that humidor baseball. So that's something i've been trying to look at. Here's something i actually found this morning and nelson. We're going to look at a lot closer. If i can just to sort of see if this is creating this extra element of noise. And that's the hard part about these spin rate decreases is that there's so much noise there's so much context it has to be applied to each one of these starts. You know because you've got that strong relationship between velocity and span if a guy's velocity is down a little bit to spin rates are going to be down to be throwing harder. The spin rates might be up. You know it's a very slippery slope here and it's something that just adds another layer of difficulty to betting on baseball and i talked about this on one of the previous shows. Here baseball is. It's not a fun game right now. With with where everything is with your players going up against each other with hitters being upset about these substances and how far pitchers have taken it but then their teammates are doing the same things and you know you got the labor stoppage. It's almost inevitable now. It's a challenge. It makes it very hard to handicap the game and so know. I'm just trying to do everything i can do. Apply context and sort of analyze and read through these things but it is very difficult and now adding this extra wrinkle here of the humidor. At least from what i'm seeing. What the recent returns on the data. It's very frustrating. It's very hard to try. To pinpoint a lot of different things corbin burns's finneran decreased but again pitching in colorado. So not as extreme as his previous start at home but down in colorado. So you know. Just another one of the wrinkles. Jose urania decreased velocity and spin for the tigers. Second straight start. This has happened. I don't think he's healthy. He did have an i l. stint earlier this season. I don't think he's really healthy. But at the same time. Alex cobb with decreased velocity and spin. And we're seeing this a lot here at angel stadium where we're seeing a lot of decreased velocity and decreased spin so i don't know if this is calibration with the system. I don't know if this a tracking issue. I don't know if it's an environmental thing. I know but it's getting very frustrating. To look through these spin rate things as well and sort of half to apply all of these different layers. All these different caveats to looking at all of this stuff like for example. Trevor bauer his. Four seam fastball spin rate down three hundred and twenty one. Rpm in his friday start against the diamondbacks. He's still through seven. Shutout innings struck out eight. Walk three but that was another one there with chase field and that's one that kind of got me thinking okay. Something is up here with the humidor and with spin rates. And honestly i feel like i remember seeing something about this in april earlier on when i was kinda tracking spin rates to look for injuries. All of that so again. Just another layer you say kukuchi big drops for him on friday. Another layer with that retractable roof. And humidor so what. I'm seeing here. Is that if you can't use some of these grip agents spin rates velocity. We'll be down in places with humidors so this is probably going to increase offense in some of these bad pictures parks. We've seen seattle actually be much better off pensively of late at home. Maybe we see in texas ally on the under tonight so hopefully it doesn't happen tonight but i do think that may be kind of a byproduct of this crackdown on substances. Is that in these humidor stadiums. I think that we may see it. Increase in offense. We saw a lot of runs. Scored that dodgers diamondbacks series. At least on sunday. I of the section pretty good in the month of june. The pitching staffs been really bad. So i think there's that i think playing overs in retractable roof. "I'm like. I think the average is gonna come now for sure. I don't think there's any way could sustain a to ninety batting average. Think he's probably more like two forty five to fifty but considering the league average is like two thirty six can click. that's actually a-plus. He'll still be generating positively. There should also probably hit on a forty one percent homer to fly ball rate slightly. Almost one of every five is leaving. I don't know that that can continue in fact. I'm certain that it cannot. I mean for a full season. The top guys can be in the twenties. I think even maybe some earnings. I'm gonna look it up from from twenty nine thousand nine our last full season but yeah i see some thirties here at the very top and thirty three percent by yelich thirty one percent by nelson cruz and piano lonzo back in two thousand nineteen so forty percent is it's just not happening so this leads to the next question. Are you selling in trade leagues because you can get a mint. Fifty homers five steals to ninety one average twenty six years old selling I mean i would definitely dangle him out there. I i wonder how much you can actually get for him I think there'll be a lot of people are scott gold of the breakout. And so yeah. I mean i kind of see what's out there You know. I mean the biggest issue with tyler. Neil in the past i mean outside of you know kind of just the the. The profile of striking out too much is been playing time. But he's got that locked in now. So i think it's reasonable to expect that he's going to keep some level of this up polygamy some of the rest of the season projections have him for twenty more home runs. You'd that's huge. So like twenty and five the rest of the way thirty five ten season i mean. Even the batting average is that they have the low end is to thirty nine. Which as you pointed out would be around. League average like is not good but it would not is not gonna kill you especially if you're getting hundred numbers in six steals which steamer has projected in. He has like the perfect kinda swing for this. New ball is what we're seeing is Hitters put loft onto to try to get it out our fallen short but it's the it's the hitters. That are kind of kind of doing this. Line drives with power. That are getting home. Run so i. i do think it's possible. He hits you know another eighteen. Plus bombs rests. The lay would combine huge power. The american league east remains the only division in baseball with four of the five teams. Have records over five hundred. Nobody's a slouching division and even the last place orioles the only team in the division with a losing record their tough out after the three california teams in the national league west. It doesn't matter what the raise their the epitome of the next man up kind of team in baseball. You don't see that baseball very often year about that football basketball but the are definitely that way The depth of that team is absolutely incredible. tyler glasnost future cy. Young winner as the starter. So they're not gonna miss flakes now. richhill forty one years old. They're getting a new level out of him this year And then the real. The real power of this team is the bullpen. They are always five or six guys. Eat in five or six guys who are better than the top two on half the teams in baseball and this year for the first time in a long time. They're getting a lot of offense to getting a lot of power. They're they're They're getting on base at probably the best clip in the league. If not the best. They're definitely up near the top solid team. Probably the strongest team top to bottom in the american league this move to the al central. We all know the white sox. They survived that little storm with tony. Larussa mercedes and the clubhouse not feeling that great about larussa calling out the young player. But i wanna talk about the minnesota twins and what has happened to them. Byron buxton is coming back for them but when he went out they went straight down to the bottom. They're in last place in the al central even below two detroit tigers who are rebuilding. What happened there craig. Just a complete across the board failure. you know. The starting pitching did not come through j half as been a disaster. Matt shoemaker has been an even bigger disaster. Those were a couple of guys that really needs to step up. I there as jose berrios. He's he's good but he's not where they need him to be right now. The bullpen has been terrible. They've also been extraordinarily on walkie their record in extra inning games. I don't have it off the top of my head but it's like really really bad. I think one one extra inning game out of like eight or nine. They lost a lot of one. Run games if anything has gone wrong for this team. It has and like you mentioned buxton. He is distraught. Stirs the drink there and losing him for so long Makes this lineup. so much. Easier to pitch to a huge problem for them They're going to be a seller at the deadline at this point. I don't think they're going to be able to dig out of this hole. You're going to see someone like nelson cruz on the market and just it could be a retrench ear lot of talents. They're going to be fine again next year. Probably but i think they dug themselves to people. I'll guess is craig calcaterra from the cup of coffee daily newsletter. Let's go to the national league and the nfl east. I don't know how to metro mentoring first place but they are. I think that's the thing that's going to tell me that. They have staying power. They took a big hit and they did it at the right time. They did it when the braves weren't doing anything The nationals are clearly not the team. we thought they'd be the phillies have been a mass in a lotta ways A good time for the mets to get hurt. I think if anything they're going to be stronger lindores not going to be a below average hitter all year. You not two hundred to twelve hit or whatever. He's doing right now. That is going to be sustainable. He's gonna do better he's gonna tear Conforto is gonna come back. And he's gonna be alright pete alonso can say about him he. He's been fantastic but he has another year over what he's doing now. I think the mets are pretty formidable. And and look. Let's let's not undersell. I don't believe in you know in all the the good juju bad juju and and all that stuff that's around the team but getting a new owner getting a new mindset getting a new front office. "That's something crazy and unbelievable. But i told myself and told jose berrios. Hey if he throws me a cutter inside. I hit it to left field. If he throws me the sinker middle in. I might hit to the middle. If somebody comes in i might hit it upo. Sino almost nailed those predictions as hard as he nailed those baseballs i think he maybe got the sequence of which pitches he was gonna hit out and where he was gonna hit them out slightly wrong. I think he got some of them right. Some not so right but still apparently he had predicted that he was gonna have three homer game so suddenly. I'm thinking okay. This is Miguel snow ability. And i was trying to look for other predictions that he had made to see if they had all come true and i found one that did not actually come true so his ability to predict baseball events is somewhat limited. I found this story in the star tribune from. I think it's late january twenty fourteen and this was before had made his major league debut and only played sixty seven games above class a but he said that he intended to play for the twins at the major league level. That season right away. He thought he was going to make the team out of spring training and his expectations. For how many home runs he was going to hit. It says when it was pointed out that his home rentals have jumped from twenty and twenty seven to twenty eight in two thousand twelve and two thirty five last year so didn't need an interpreter to explain what's next i'll hit forty five this year. More games he said maybe fifty five you never know. And he also said that he'd have hundred twenty walks. Maybe one hundred fifty confident guy well as it turns out about a month after that story was published in that prediction was made. He hurt his elbow and he had tommy john surgery and he did not play policies so that would quite come true but i guess maybe just that he has confidence in himself and so he predicts that he'll hit forty five homers or. He'll hit three in one game or he will turn a triple play just seemingly at every opportunity. So i'm gonna chalk this up to just being a prolific prognosticator more so than oppression prognosticator. I think that that's a fair assessment. And it's like. I said last time you know when you're a professional athlete. I think that you are under tremendous pressure all of the time. It's very hard job. And so i think that if you have to boost your confidence by saying i'm gonna do it and you find that sort of self affirmation to be either useful or motivating then more power to you know. I'm not going to hold people accountable for their predictions being right unless they're constructing a projection system for me. Yeah this is more media. Criticism may be than player criticism yet. Feel free to predict whatever you want if gives you confidence booster or it's fun but if it's going to be reported after the facts that you predicted those things then i need more complete accounting to know how often you were predicting these things how often you're actually correct. Just one more bit of banter. Jesse winker is on a pretty incredible role right now. Yeah he hit. Three home runs on sunday for the second time this season i think he is the twenty first player to have multiple three homer games in the same season. It's happened twenty five times. Sammy sosa did it. Three times in a single season the others are all two times and of course it has happened more often of late with the homerun rates. Being are so this is not quite as uncommon occurrence as it it would have been. We were just talking about galvano hitting three homers in a game. No wonder he is predicting that in these days of high homerun rates but winker has done it already. This year at duval did it last year. Who get nelson cruz. Debate in two thousand nineteen. Mookie betts did it in two thousand eighteen end twenty sixteen so it happened fairly frequently but winker is just an unbelievable tear just all season now. He has the highest. Wrc plus anyone other than letting your and vladimir guerrero is basically leading the league in everything now. The messianic bat is here. it's been wonderful to watch. But right behind him is jesse winker with a one eight. Wrc plus just behind vlad's one ninety five. He's batting three fifty four twelve six sixty five yup in fifty games in three hundred twenty one plate appearances us one homer behind vlad for the major league lead and he's basically like surpassed his previous single season highs in everything at this point. Of course he hasn't really played a a full healthy season. He's topped out at one hundred. Thirteen games three hundred. Eighty four plate appearances in previous seasons. And he's always been a pretty good hitter yankees a career one thirty seven. Wrc plus guy and was well above average coming into the year but just hadn't been healthy hadn't been in the lineup all the time and he someone who tends to get platoon to allot 'cause historically he hasn't hit lefties very well by men. He is mashing in. Bring this up. Not just to note that he has mashing but also because we are recording on tuesday. A few hours before winker plays the brewers and starting for the brewers is adrian. Hauser whom winker has absolutely owned in their past match ups and this is like one of the the more had head better versus pitcher ownership lines. I think going right now. He is faced houser thirteen times and he has a twenty three eighty five opie s in those thirteen plate appearances. He has homered five times. He's gotten eight hits and he's struck out a couple times. But that's your six fifteen six fifteen seventeen sixty nine slash line. So we don't know yet what he will do against hauser on tuesday. So i don't know if if they would look at that and like intellectually. Be aware that it doesn't really say anything definitive but like emotionally. Be kind of either gleeful at the prospect or trepidation about facing you know each other so i don't know if that's the dynamic that is at play for one or both of them but i suspect that in general players are very keenly aware of who has gotten them and who they've got right in the past and that they perhaps put more stock in it than is useful and i don't blame them because i think it is difficult to intellectualize away from feelings and if you have had a guy hit a bunch of home runs off of you for instance. You're going to be conscious of that every single time. Because it makes you grumpy negate the ball and you mash it around while he's running the bases and so. I think that that is my first assertion. The second is more of a question. I'm curious if this phenomenon exists for you. I think the jesse winker is great example of this. I think the jesse winker part of this is as you say that he is tuned in so you see him less often than you might. Otherwise but i think that he is a player who's poor defensive. Reputation has perhaps impacted my understanding of his game in toto because you are correct to say that like smartly platoon. Sure but in the right situation has been a good hitter over the course of his career rate in in a year when the reds offense last year was just really not very good at all he was.
