"jose alvarado" Discussed on Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney

"It just felt to me like they kind of had an idea what was coming, which makes you think, if it goes 7, now what? Like it would be mccullers turn to start again. Javier would be ready. I would think in relief, all hands on deck and all that. And game 7 seems like it's a year away. But I'm sure the Astros are having some oh boy. What do we do if it gets to 7? Because he's got to do more than execute better. He's got to change his pitch mix if he's going to face them again. Yeah, I think dusty had game 7 in his mind as that was playing out last night, as you know, there's been some criticism of dusty for in the eyes of some, not getting mccullers out of there sooner. Dan, I was watching that. I'm thinking, dusty, thinking is, you know what, I might need this guy and say game 7 and I need him to pitch? Like, you know, going into that game last night, he'd only pitched twice in 28 days. And so he needed Lance mccullers to have an outing where he's on this mountain. He's working through some things. And he needs to do everything he can to help make him better in a game 7. And I got to believe, yeah, that if there is a game 7, mccullers on the mound, it's going to be very different, right? With his pitch mix. Yeah, I would have to think. And I think one of the tricky parts for dusty, you know, is mccullers had sat down 7 in a row coming into the 5th inning. Like he was looking fine. He had gotten the two through 8 hitters or one through 7 hitters, I think, 7 in a row. And then he gets the first out of the 5th inning. So he had set down 8 in a row, and then marsh, the number 9 hitter gets a base hit. You know, if he had given up kind of an innocuous single in the third and innocuous single in the fourth and schwarber's leading off the 5th, maybe he doesn't even come back out for the 5th inning, but he had set down 7 in a row the 8 and 9 hitters were the first two guys up. He gets the number 8 hitter Segura and nana base hit for marsh and then boom, boom. And then it happens in the blink of an eye. So, you know, it was one of those things where things maybe could have turned out different. And they're not going to win the game. No matter what happens, but what it might have done if he had come out earlier is force rob Thompson to use Jose alvarado or forcing him to use Syrian domains or force him to use David Robertson or something like that. And maybe that compromises them a little bit tonight or tomorrow night. So, you know, because you saw alvarado got up and then they hit the homers and he sat down and then kind of brogden was the guy who got up. So it allowed rob Thompson to really make moves a little bit more freely. And it's always tricky. You know, you're trying to win this game, but you're thinking about other games and sometimes when you try to straddle the line a little bit too much, you don't achieve either rule. Yeah, and you led perfectly into my next question, how big was that for the Phillies that they didn't have to use any of their big relievers last night? I think it's huge because the way baseball goes these days, as you know, is three days in a rosa thing. You rarely see guys pitch three games in a row. Three days in a row. I know it's the World Series, but still, even if they go out there, they might be a little bit compromised. But now rob Thompson doesn't have to worry about that. That's gone. He can, he can load up his big guys tonight and tomorrow night. And then they get a day off. And then there are two games down in Houston, if necessary. So I think it was really big. And listen, Nick Nelson, in the 8th, inning when he walked a couple of guys, it almost forced Thompson to make another move and go to somebody else that he didn't want, but it was one of those nights where things worked out. They just played out perfectly for rob Thompson. The moments happened at the right moments for him to be able to make the bullpen decisions that he wanted to make. Now, how much fun is it for you to watch rob Thompson manage in this World Series? Because you guys speak the same language. It's fun to hear that every day. Yeah. So he's from a small town in southwestern Ontario or western stereo, I guess, Corona, Ontario, kind of across the border from Port Huron, Michigan for context for U.S. listeners. But he, as you know, is as down to earth a guy as you will ever meet, not just in baseball, like anywhere, life or 59 years of age, been a coach forever and been passed over for some managerial openings. But now finally getting a chance after Joe Girardi was let go and it's just and I love dusty just as much, you know, as you know, even though destiny as long as I have maybe longer, he's a great guy too, but you know I won't lie when I say that as a Canadian. It's kind of cool to see a Canadian managing in the World Series. No Canadian has managed in the, what we know is the World Series from 1903 on. There was a gentleman in the 1800s who did it before it was really the World Series. But to see rob Thompson getting this chance and to imagine what, you know, all the bars that he talked about the little Italian, the pizza joint, you know, up the street from where his family lived to know what all the bars in Corona and in sarnia and in Stratford and in all the places where he has roots in Ontario, the Canadian baseball community is not huge. It's not nearly as big as the U.S. baseball community, obviously, but there are a lot of people taking a lot of pride in really enjoying what rob Thompson is experiencing right now. And you know, good things you like to believe good things happen to good people and it took a while for rob Thompson, but it's great to see him getting this opportunity. He told us it's a cool story yesterday about his contract negotiations. I'll let you go through that. That was really fun to hear him because I thought it was a direct reflection of his personality. Yeah, well, you were the one who asked the question. So you deserve the credit. But he said, here's the best part. He goes, we were on the bus. I can't remember. Was it Atlanta or St. Louis? Like he doesn't even remember what city they were in. And he goes, and Dave dombrowski said, can you come to my hotel room? I'd like to talk to you about something. So he figured it might be a contract, but he didn't want to assume. And he said he went to Deborah's hotel room and they did the contract. And then I followed up and I said, wait a minute, you did it in one night. He goes, what night? We did it in 20 minutes. It took 20 minutes for him to sort out the contract. And within that 20 minutes was him wanting to make sure the coaches were okay. Are the coaches going to stay because I love the coaches. And that's rob Thompson in a nutshell. And you know, he wasn't going to fight about money. He's appreciative of the opportunity. I interviewed Bryson stout a couple of days ago. And I said, what does rob Thompson meant to this team? That was the whole question. He said, he's meant everything. Like he's meant everything. He's just got a deft touch and a way of making the players feel valued and putting them in good spots. You know, even a little thing, The Rain out changed the pitching plans. And I can't remember which among us who among us asked the question, you know, so what did you say to him?

"The pacers have, I think everyone's just assuming they will trade all their good players, other veteran good players, the name of the miles Turner and buddy healed. That's her and healed certainly. That's being TJ McConnell. Although TJ McConnell, now he's got some leak pass equity just on his own, right? He does, and as I wrote in the column, he has to be absolutely furious that Jose alvarado came along and stole TJ McConnell's thunder as the preeminent cat burglar on backcourt steels, where he literally crouches in the corner and sneaks up behind and gets inbounds passes or steals it from people bringing the ball up. TJ McConnell was the king of the inbounds pesto, they didn't even have no one even got the ball. He would just steal the inbounds pass. And Halliburton, tyrese Halliburton, I have a little thing on him coming out next week. I don't want to spoil it too much, but you nailed it in your pacers preview, which is, which is up today. The guy is just a passing genius in any defensive coverage where you put two on the ball. He is going to pick it apart with two steps ahead, brilliance. The question is the interesting one for the pacers is, as you pointed out, very, very saliently, is he's going to face all kinds of defenses this year because he's the number one option by far, including switches. And does he have either the speed or like the step back hesitation dribble, step back three craft to beat switches, but he's like, I mean, he's going to be a 2010 guy this season, right? I mean, I don't know what the odds are on him leading the league in assist, but it's got to be pretty high. Probably pretty low, I guess. Yeah, yeah, I mean, he's a big reason to watch even though they will shut him down with some vague injury on February 17th. But so my main argument though is you can't put a team with The Rookie of the year 29th. Is good, okay? He's a year older than these other guys who came out so they may catch him in whatever, but he was they picked him 6, I think. 6th. He was the best rookie in summer league. He's been the best rookie in preseason. Like, if you're set nods on rookie of the year, like why wouldn't it be him? I think he's just plug and play ready to go starting wing in the NBA. Like right now. Yeah, they do, you know, between Halliburton healed Mather and duarte, I mean, Hal burns obviously gonna start. One of those last three guys is coming off the bench could be healed, could be Mather in. Could be any of them. You just gotta start bathroom. He's the second most important piece in your future. All right, so are you coming out right now, John hollinger, you're predicting, this wasn't even gonna be one of the awards that we called shot that we called shot. You're calling it matheran rookie of the year. Over Caro over whoever else is, you know, odds, odds are good. Calling my shot. I like it. I mean, why can't he if he starts and they eventually wither away the talent? Why can't he average like 17 and four? Yeah. Right? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, especially after the all star break when they shut everyone else down. They'll probably keep him going, put the ball in his hands more. Yeah. We put up some big numbers. You know, this is what everyone came for in deep Indiana Pacers talk. Yeah, I apologize about what I'm doing to the ratings for your show. No, this is fine 'cause all the pacers fans are gonna spend all your sign no one's talking about. No, we right now. Are talking about you for the first 8 minutes of a national ESPN podcast. Okay, give me a couple of hours. It's like the what when they give the one national TV game between Orlando and Houston just to say, look, we covered it like we did it. Yeah, that's one where we gotta break out some bells and whistles. Like we gotta do the second spectrum alternate broadcast with funky sound effects and stuff like that. Van Gundy, van Gundy should wear a toupee and to play by play. I don't know. We gotta do something. Different for them. Give me a couple others where you really disagreed vehemently. Either on the high end or the low end with my league pass rankings or the algorithms league pass rankings. You know what? I'm not gonna say this is a vehement disagreement. But I actually thought New Orleans could have been even higher because basically everyone on that roster is interesting. And the accumulation of everyone and how it all fits is interesting. And the whole question of like, are they somehow going to start the year 5 and 16 again? Like they always do, even though they look to have all this talent. That part is interesting. Like, who is the, who is the boring guy on New Orleans right now? Who comes into the game and you're like, eh. Maybe I'll maybe I'll change over to the pacers game now. Nobody. Nobody on that. I mean, they could play four guys. Well, that would make them work so I'm not flipping to any pacers game over at the pelicans. I guess the most boring guy, I mean, even Jonas valentinus is fun to watch. Oh, yeah, totally. Yeah. I mean, obviously I'm biased here. Well, yeah, but he's gonna like run people over, flex and roar, his three point pump fake takes 9 seconds and no one quite knows what to make of it. And it's just the whole thing is delightful. Larry Nance, I guess if you're just sort of a casual channel flipping fan, Larry Nance dribble handoffs and flare screens are not gonna light your world on fires. Maybe it's him, but for me, so the pelicans came 5th and the top 5 in order were one Brooklyn, two Golden State, three Memphis, four Denver. That's a tough top 5. I mean, really, but I'm with you, like Zion is, we're on Zion withdrawal. Like I can't wait to watch this guy. I can't wait to watch how he fits in. And you're high on them, right? I believe you and I are both on the high end of pelicans expectations. I had the 48 win succeed. Yeah. So it's interesting to see how this all fits together, you know? Are they going to defend? Do they have any three point shooting or will it matter? Will they just score 80 points in the paper game? And it just won't matter. From an entertainment perspective, I don't care about any of those questions. I don't care. Okay, yes, they will need to defend and shoot threes to win 48 games. For me to watch them, I don't even care if they're shooting injuries. More power to them if they play no defense, it'll be even more fun to watch. Although they need to get some fast breaks, that's where defense will help is we need to get Zion in the open court and just people coming near him and then bouncing off of him in all directions at the same time. So you had pelicans 6th, which means I believe the team among the sort of top 7 8 in the west that you had in the play in is Dallas Dallas was Dallas and Minnesota in the plane. Dallas and Minnesota.

"Let's jump over to the pelicans, the pelicans announced recent imaging of Zion Williams right 5th metatarsal show continued improvement. He's cleared to return to play progression without any restrictions. So that's great news in terms of Zion getting in a full off season of work and then preparing for next season to get missed the entire season this year, but the hope is that he can get back on track and be ready to go for opening night this next season. Yeah, huge. I mean, no other way to put it. This is a massive for the pelicans. I just posted their off season preview. Without looking. How many free agents to take the two way guys out of it? How many free agents do you think the pelicans have this off season? Oh my gosh. I know they have most of their guys that are locked up for one. That's it. Wow. And I thought I was maybe maybe aiming a little. I was like, maybe there's like guys that I'm not thinking of on the roster. I thought I was, okay. Got three if you count there two way guys, Gary Clark and Jared Harper. Wow. But of their standard players, just one, Tony Snell, Jose alvarado is on a partially guaranteed contract, which clearly they're going to keep him. And let that contract become fully guaranteed. All the other guys, the other 13 players on standard deals are signed. For next week. And that's it. Continuity and consistency. Now you get your main guy back. Some are workouts. You're going to have them on the floor. Going into training camp. You're going to have them on the floor. I'm going to it's way too early to fully lock this in. So we don't need to make this a lock pick. But this team's going to be pushing for a home court advantage in the playoffs next year, I think. They were pretty good. In the second half of last year, CJ McCollum was awesome for them..

"Like the move to just kind of go like, just get a little tipsy every night. Get a little wine drunk every night and just kind of just let the get the takes off, man. That's what the people want, give the people he still has an opportunity to become a big storyline in the playoffs. We know he likes that. So just do it. Yeah. Tweet every game. He should live tweet every game. Chris, it would be like after the Emmys, if Jason Bateman just one night was watching some show and was like, I don't know who these dweebs who vote on the Emmys are doing. But I'll tell you this, Julia. What? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. His takes so far, the thing with LeBron and the tweets are mostly just that like he's like, I was into their early stuff. So it's always like I've been watching this guy since he was 12. I have his early singles. You guys weren't messing with him when he was independent. So far and mostly it's just like jaws special tyrese maxi is special. So it's the usual, but I like that he's always like, I've been scouting this guy. Yeah, he's very much like I saw them when they were still calling Mookie blaylock. Yeah, I think he needs to weave in an old guy. You know, like, yeah, maybe a biz backed biombo. I remember this guy early on thinking this guy's gonna be playing for 12 years and now here we are. It's your 12, something like that. Maybe just to mix it up. Come on, Looney is a great locker room presence. What I want him to go the next step, which is just to start claiming people that we know he didn't know about. Jose alvarado, you should have just been like, I've known this guy I've got people in Puerto Rico. They told me about him. As far as.

"I assume they'll get right here, but these first two performances have not been encouraging. And sun's pells, the sun should still win this series. They are an elite defensive team without Devin Booker. They have a lot of experience playing now after the season without one of their star guards or even without ayton. They're just a better team than the pelicans who are young and inexperienced but I'll tell you the pelicans are killing them on the offensive glass and CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram had been surgical. Attacking ayton in the pick and roll ain't been pretty solid and he's coming up much higher on screens for CJ than he is for BI, which is smart. But CJ has gotten around him a few times and gotten into the lane and caused some havoc and BI has made some mid range jumpers over him. But more than that, they're going at Chris Paul hard. They are hunting Chris Paul in a way I've never seen a team hunt Chris Paul really before hunting him as if he's a defensive liability which he has never been in his career. And he's looked vulnerable, particularly to CJ blowing by him, and without Booker, I would expect the pelicans to do a lot more of that. And just try to wear them down and wear them out Willy green obviously knows this team in this personnel really well. And then you have this sort of Specter as Kevin pelton wrote about, you know, we all say, well, they've still got Chris Paul. Well, for 12, 15, whatever minutes, they're not gonna have either Chris Paul or Devin Booker. They're gonna have campaign and Landry shim it and Torrey Craig, and they're gonna have to make something out of that. And that's not gonna be easy. Where they're really gonna have to lean into the complexity of their pick and roll attack with the flare screens at the cuts and guys moving around because you take away Devin Booker, you take away the fail safe. You take away the guy that's hey, where's devonte Graham? Barely playing, by the way. Where's Jose alvarado, who is like a cat burglar, but smaller than me, where's a big guy that I can roast off to dribble? Where's the little guy that I can post and draw help? You take them in Booker away. That's gone. And now you've got to run your system. And if you're totally system dependent and maybe they can find 8 in for some post ups when Larry Nance is in the game because the pelicans are switching one to 5 with Larry Nance who's been sensational and is reminded everyone why he was such a big part of that trade. That Larry Nance is presence in that trade, changed that trade from a trade. I didn't really love for the pelicans. And we'll see it even how it looks in two or three years. It looks great right now in the moment. We'll see how it looks in two or three years to one that I thought, okay, I can live with that. Larry Nance is really good. They're playing a bit center revelation playing Larry nances center or something the blazers basically never did. Maybe they can get some 8 and post ups on switches and lob it over the top and they got JaVale on one of those in game two. They'll definitely clean up their transition defense, which was but I don't even know what the hell happened to the sun's transition defensive game too. I've never seen it like that. But they're gonna have to run that system to perfection into Orleans against a raucous crowd against a team that's pretty confident that's bursting with some bravado that has survived Chris Paul torturing Jackson Hayes, poor Jackson haze on Jay Crowder. That was a matchup everybody pointed to right away as a materialized saying, Chris Paul is going to put him through pick and roll hell and not just says defending the screener. They're going to get him switched onto Chris Paul and he's a great switch defender, but he's not a great switch defender if you run him through another pick and roll where he's defending the ball handler all of a sudden he gets lost. And the pelicans have quickly moved on from him when it's gone badly and brought in Trey Murphy and I like that lineup for them a lot that's smaller lineup or even with alvarado and then just herb and BI at the forward spots. But the pelicans have some answers. They've got some bravado, like I don't think this is going to be an easy series for the suns and it just shows you how fragile it is and these injuries obviously suck, but through a week in the playoffs, a lot of what we thought we knew a lot of what we thought was certain appears uncertain and all of a sudden you're like, is the most likely finals warriors Celtics now? Is that what we're going to be doing? Obviously there's a long way to go. I'm not going to dive too much further into these games 'cause they're tonight by the time you listen to this podcast they'll be in like 8 or 9 hours and I always like to schedule these. So they have some breathing space and talk about games that are two or three days away. But that's sort of the early feel for some of these playoffs. Hopefully everybody gets healthy soon. We enjoy some good playoffs. Let's talk about two of the more exciting first round series that resume later this weekend net Celtics and wolves, grizz, starting with the one and only Sarah cousteau. "Where's my, where's my reward for doing what I did? Yeah. And then that's not there, and you're still seen as this guy who's maybe got a battle to get in. That's got to be frustrating. It certainly especially given where he's come from from being that perennial all star and all of that. And feeling like he's got something left. That there's certainly some frustration wrapped up in there. But that's also, that's not just the NBA. That's sports. That's pro sports in general. Once they're done with you there, I'm with you. Yeah, it's tough. I mean, it's funny. I don't want to get into a huge change. 'cause now it's not the time for this. But whenever people suggest things like, you know, they should do a lottery team should play a tournament. You know, whoever wins the tournament gets to the top pick, what's my motivation to play for a better pick to get somebody to take my spot? I'm not interested in that. You gotta incent me in other ways to do that. So that's just, you know, it is what it is with that, but yeah. We can discuss that at a later time when we can we don't have other topics and I can rail on the draft process. A million thoughts I have about how to make it better. We'll have plenty of time. We'll have plenty of time to get into that before June, but that's a summer topic. That's an NBA August. That's true. So tonight, Atlanta Miami, New Orleans Phoenix, we know what those series are. I don't think we need to talk about it a whole lot. Yeah, the only thing is if Trae Young. If he goes Berserk, sure. That's the way for the hawks. The pelicans. I think we saw probably them do about as good as they can do against the suns. The only thing that is encouraging, not for the rest of this series, but it might be pretty good next year. They've got they found some stuff this year, you know? Everybody who was throwing dirt on David Griffin. Earlier, we might want to leave that alone for a little bit here. I think he's got some stuff. Him in staff have identified some guys and found some players, herb Jones, Jose alvarado, naji Marshall, some guys a little bit later down and presumably Zion in the fall. So but yeah, they good one now. He's doing the undertaker again. David Griffin. But yeah, and this is weird because the two TNT games, I'm like, eh, I mean, Trey Trey, okay, if Trey goes Berserk, but otherwise we know my name is the better team. Oh, okay, there's some guys in favor, but look, we kind of know what that series is..

"There have been solid with those two guys together. Jackson age does enough stuff as a cutter around the rim and a dump off guy that he's super dangerous despite the spacing issues. CJ has been great. BI has been really good when he's been healthy. After an adjustment period with CJ, I do think there are some interesting matchups in this game if assuming the spurs have everybody. I think you'll see a lot of the cell on CJ McCollum, which is kind of a fun matchup and a fun test for a really interesting second year player. Josh Richardson has also gotten the CJ McConnell match up quite a bit. And on the other end, I think we're going to see not on herb, not on herb, guarding Dijon Murray, who has morphed into an all star this year in just an ace long two jump shot maker. The boards are a key in one game, anything can happen, but these are two of the top ten offensive rebounding teams in the league. The spurs offensive rebound. Look at that. I think they're 8th in offensive rebounding. The pelicans are a great defensive rebounding team. The spurs are 24th. So are the pelicans? Can they generate 8 extra points? 6 extra points on offensive rebounding. That can be kind of the difference in this in a one game take all like this. My gut, I just think the pelicans, they just have more pure kind of capital T talent on hand when they have both McCollum and Ingram just more kind of explosiveness to them than the spurs who are faster and more explosive than they have been in the past and killed in Johnson's been rampaging for the last couple of months and all that. I just kind of think the pelicans have a little bit more firepower, but and a little bit more at stake. And I don't know if the players feel that, but they do need to win this game. The pelicans is an organization really need to win this game. I just think the firepower they have will carry them through by a little bit, but it would not surprise me if the spurs won. Yeah, you know, it's funny. I have the least amount of confidence on this game of the over four about what it's actually going to look like. I've been enjoying the Kelvin Johnson sort of experience lately. And I never loved him as a one on one player. Like yes, he's strong and he can use that strength to get to the hoop, but like so could Stanley Johnson in his first few years and I was sort of not a Kelvin Johnson guy and like all the sudden. Okay, maybe his dribble game isn't deceptive enough. It doesn't matter, but he's become this really nice complimentary piece against a catch and shoot player. He gives the spurs a lot of structure. He's asked to do a lot kind of now as a essentially as a four man for all practical purposes, and that's what he is. It'll be fun to see how one of these, hey, we're not going big and you're not going small. Let's see how it plays out with possibly gets haze. But I really enjoyed, you know, Johnson and pearls kind of interesting. He's one of these skills not stretch bigs. And they did a really nice job in the first couple of matchups against New Orleans. With turtle in the short roll game, right? And you got to make Valentine's defend a little bit in space. You know, they even use Kelvin Johnson in that capacity with pearl in a couple of the march games to that effect. So I mean, that was sort of something you think. I mean, San Antonio will come up with a few things that are clearly, you know, that will work that give them an advantage against as you say, better talent, but I don't have a huge feel, even though these teams both played in each other in March about what it's going to look like apart from that. But yeah, I mean, it's been fun to kind of get to know the spurs, a little bit again, as kind of knowing, we're going to have to talk about them and sort of watching them and obviously Dijon has just become just an incredibly creative player. With defensive capacity, just can change the game as a defender a bit. Wasn't on my ballot this year, but I do think that, again, it also, it gives them a fighting chance behind them. They're not a great defensive team, but he is great against the point of attack. He's a great weak side. Guard defender because he can just come so quick. It'll be a fun game. Again, I don't want to insult the good people of New Orleans and San Antonio. This is my least interesting game. And it's a very interesting game. Agreed. I think disperse are playing pretty well. The pelicans are playing pretty well when they have everybody. Match up, it's kind of interesting. It's two teams that don't shoot a lot of threes, but the pelicans have kind of more of that variance explosion to them than the spurs do. The spurs, of course, give up no threes at all. That's just a Popovich constant. I'm picking the pelicans their home. I just think they're more explosive and that lineup has been working well. And they found their bench is kind of stabilized with Jose alvarado. I don't know how much Trey Murphy will play. I like Trey Murphy. I think that kid's got a chance to be really good as a complimentary wing player and has had a couple of big games a couple of exclusive games, but a couple of big games down the stretch and the pelicans have been playing like for their lives for a long time here. I'm gonna take them, which means I've taken all the home teams, I guess, and which would give us the nets is the 7, so we are pretty, here's what my predictions and I think we got all the same predictions. I'm with you on everything. Give us the nets as the nets is the 7th seed facing the Celtics, the wolves, as the 7 seed facing the grizzlies, that would be awesome. Just that's my series. I'm going to Memphis, by the way. I'm Memphis. Two of the loudest, two of the loudest trash talker talking teams in the league. One of them is backed it up with tons of wins. The other I was watching, I think I was watching, I was watching spurs warriors on Saturday night because I wanted to see, I chose that game, I want to see how draymond was like, I knew both teams set tons of guys. Draymond looked great by the way. He looks like draymond again. And the spurs announcers were having a little aside about the play in and this and that. And I think it was Bill land, the play by play, guys said, you know, the wolves, the wolves act like they've actually won something in this league. And I think that's the kind of like, that's how people think of the wolves and their trash talk, which got most of the attention when they just humiliated Russell Westbrook and the Lakers. Just as this team that's a little too big for their britches, like Memphis, the britches fit, 'cause when you win 55 plus games, talk your talk. Like you back it up every game. There's this sense that the wolves are a little too little too yappy, a little too loud. I kind of like it. I kind of like that for the wolves. I kind of think they should lean into that. And then we would get clippers, pills for the 8th seed and hawks calves for the 8th seed and I would probably pick the home team. But I would probably pick the clippers and the hawks and those games respectfully Cleveland would be at home. I misspoke there. So that's where we are. I guess we'll see starting tomorrow. We get the first two playing games. Playing week, they made a whole week out of this. If you make the playoffs now, you get like a week off. It's actually kind of another added bonus to being in the top 6, you get a week to rest and recuperate, which for the Mavs, as we mentioned earlier, that could be huge. I'm very excited about either outcome in the clipper Timberwolves game. Because I have been assigned to Memphis, I fly there on Thursday. And if I get the Timberwolves then I'm going to be writing a lot of really fun news or about all just the bile that is on the floor directed at one another and that could be fun and also be fun to kind of see that sentence.

"Guys off the TV, please. My guess is because a lot of people are like, why is it not buck sixers, which is a huge game in the east. My guess is it's because the Mavs to have a 7 third. That's a very early star for them. It's only a 6 30. Local start. My guess is that's why to then push them back into their normal start times are 7 30 local, which is 8 30 eastern. So you'd be posting pushing the game back a whole hour. And my guess is that's why they're not doing it because people may have already done their plans and whatever. And that's why they didn't change it. But yeah, you're absolutely right. Nobody wants this. This was like remember for years when I was like, the Lakers couldn't get good in the Knicks can get good. And then both were playing on Christmas Day and we're like, what? Yes. What is this? Now I do kind of miss it because I was one of your scheduled in the family time. We made the catch a nap, one Christmas three. Yeah, I hear you, but it is what it is. All right, let's get to where do we want to go next? Well, Jared Harper to the pelicans on a two way contract. We talked about alvarado got bumped up to a full contract, so that frees up a spot for Jared Harper to get a two way deal. So he'll get a look there from the pelicans. And he had been with them earlier this season has been kind of on and off. He's been playing for the my favorite DET name, the Birmingham squadron of the G league. He had been playing with them all year. And then on Jose alvarado, just to kind of close a little bit of Luke because we've had some subsequent reporting on him. He got 1.5 million for the remainder of the season basically all the pelicans had left to give of their mid level exception they gave its alvarado. That's a deal. I mean, that's a huge bump because as an undrafted rookie, he would have been looking at about a 100,000 or so down the stretch here, a little over that probably about a 140,000 ish. So that's huge. That's why when you start to like, man, this dude did a four year deal. He might have been able to get something out of that and then he'll be fully guaranteed at about 1.5 million next year. And then into non guarantees and a team option on that final season. Right. Well, I mean, good for him. Good for him to land that communicate a cool story. All right, let's finish up. Hey, did you see their pelicans bio? I didn't. It was really cute. So you know, there was the whole thing with Jose alvarado, you know, Kenny shoot. That was like the whole thing that was out there. And it said, yes, he can shoot. And he got paid. That's what the chances are. Too. I thought that was pretty fun. That's cool. That's cool. Good job, pelicans. All right, let's finish up with this..

"Oh. What necessitates a bi I guess? Do I have to do like one for each of the guys or kind of sell all of them kind of hold? Whatever you want to do here. I was going to pick one for each, but I picked more for me, so I think I would buy miles sell her bellow I'd hold class B, but I don't really, I'm not really high on either of those too. Thought miles would make a little bit more of a jump this year. I know he's playing well, but I thought he'd diversify a little bit more of the scoring facilitating yeah, next to my answer. Jamie boss is actually pretty intriguing from that team too. Yeah, I'm with you. I would buy Mike miles sell her bellow and hold on Gillespie. I think the king of the hype train of the colon Gillespie is a good chance play in the NBA. Does as I try to mold my own views on scouting and evaluation does Jose alvarado's success sway any of your thoughts on guys that I don't want to say were rolled off, but sort of like Dan not really going to crack a NBA rotation then surprises you. Does that change your kind of view of when you're looking at these guys that maybe may not be slaughtered in the top 60, but we're seeing outside top 75 top 100 guys, get opportunities in peak contributing players on NBA floors. The guys that are elite defensively and can pass and have good NBA skill level, even if they're small in their super tough and they're willing to fucking scratch and claw and fight, like Jose alvarado is, those guys, I think, have a better shot. Karella right now can't really do anything on an MBA court. I'm sorry. He's electric with the ball, like with the ball at his hands, he's better than the other two. It's just like, he can't finish the product. That's how he touches that one. Yeah? Right. Okay. Next, oh man. This is an interesting one. Okay, how do you think a full season and NCA tournament would have affected the scouting and evaluation of the 2020 NBA draft class did more players get drafted for a role and fit than normal? Do the due to the dearth of play on video? Did some players slide or rise more than they should have? That is from tuana fin. Still got nothing on Twitter. That's actually something. It is interesting. Yeah, because the draft was like, I've heard it both ways from NBA teams on the 2020 draft..

"That inconsistency is still there. You really, you really want to see him turn that corner and not look back. But that's obviously like an awesome stat for him. I feel like it was a stubbornness with his own. I feel like he was like, no, no, not against these guys. I'm not struggling these guys. You saw it right over guys, you know? And he was successful. You know, you saw a couple of those threes go right in, back to back possession. And the pelicans shot away from the zone, but then we went right back into it. It was different stretch to drive. After going back to it. Yeah, I love the fact that they would move the ball around it. The next thing you know, you've got 6, 7 jaylen Brown matched up against 6 three, Jose alvarado. Just shoots right over the top. And again, but we saw them not do that in those back to back games, but against Charlotte and Portland when there's no rim protection there at all and they still opted to take 40 something threes in each of those games. You know, and it's frustrating when you don't. And in this, at least you recognize these guys can't stop. I can shoot over the top of this guy and I can take it right to the paint and there's nothing there. So you're right. If you have that, take advantage of it. How many times you see Tatum on a mismatch setting up a guy for a step back three? That's not what you do with mismatches. You attack these guys, but you do it quickly before the defense settles. And when there's no resistance in the paint at all, you have to take full advantage of it. That's a great stat for 13 for 13. One other player has done that in Celtics history. Can you guess who? Gordon. Hayward. Rob. We're all sharing Gordon Hayward. Yeah. 16 for 16 in a 2019 game. Wow. Wow. He did have a couple of those 18 for 20 games. I remember, you know, he's crazy..

"Success rate is obviously concerning as well one player who was who explored a whole lot of the studio space for the pelicans somberly team was not marshall and nause his intensity like defensively like that was. That was a big part for me of why really liked him last year on the pels and he he stood out on a team that needed that kind of that needed that youth and he ended up being a much larger part of their offense. Really he was. He had a usage rate of fifty percent in also had was leading. You was biding euro five zero percent. No no he's twenty five percents. Oh ochre thirty to twenty five percent. But then he also had a twenty eight. Assist percentage Basically was it was very high volume. When when marshall was out there and that were i mean. He's three. his three ball looked looked dr. He wasn't taking a ton of them when you think about how much ball was in marshall sands Wasn't really making. His twos was getting so. I thought he was fine. I didn't i thought that for him. Export like doing all that extra engvall work didn't really change. It didn't make me think. Oh he should be doing that all time pros but it did make me appreciate. Oh well he does. These other things ball had some success as a pastor. Statistically got on the defensive glass key plays hard. he's got a strong body you know. He's not really an elite athlete. But you hope that maybe that kind of quest matthews sorta style of defense could earn him a role but the three point shot is going to be big for him again. For a team with side williamson and brandon and and all these other guys. Yeah it was great that he did some pick and roll but not going to be as good as those guys. So y- maybe you'll do it on the backside every once in a while but it's mostly going to be a novelty for him. And then the the pelicans at to both of their two way guys dalton homes and jose alvarado were on their team but both of them had pretty small roles because the pelicans had a lot of other mouse defeat. So i didn't have any real thoughts on them. They were only playing in small spurts. Who talk about the sixers now. Entire east maxi had one of the better summer leagues really of any one ad where it really began for him was that his jump shot looks to be coming along. It's still little flat. It's still kind of a little bit of a push shot with the low released but he was very active taking them even had a a step back as well that opened up some more of his pick and roll game..

"To deliver. It's the closer carousel recorded. That on my phone remember you know who knows it could never always be our last show. You know we gotta talk about alex race because the walks have finally caught up to this guy and the cardinals are still kind in it in the wild card race for the second wildcard the national league i mean reds right now lead the padres. Everybody's assumes padres. But i you know i had to answer a question today from the. They'll be team. But which team is most which jim currently in position is most likely to miss out and everybody has to pick reds will lose out to the padres. But i don't really believe that's going to happen. I really don't like. I think the cardinals might catch the padres. The padres schedules very tough. Now it's tough to pitch to pick the cardinals to catch anybody when they don't have jocularity and now they're changing clothes probably do giovanni guy yoga's but their lineup carlson. Who knows it's it's an interesting team. It's like the phillies. It's a five hundred team. I really wanted to say that. Oakland was gonna catch boston but without bassett and what trevino struggling at the back end. You know. i really couldn't do that. So i'm not sure. There's going to be any excitement from the playoff race. Really you know maybe yankees catching the raise. I i made a bold statement which will be shown on the web page. One of these days probably wednesday anyway your thoughts on saint louis. Not only that. Alex resume may have lost the closer world this weekend. Finally but what is next year. And where would you rank. Oh i like it. Yeah because i still wonder whether the cardinals have designs on trying to get him. A starters career you never know you never know they wanted to be a starter i. I think that their desires aren't matching. The reality ramos might be locked at this point in his career to being a good short reliever maybe next year. He's more equipped to hold up over. One hundred sixty two game schedule. They've managed them a lot better over the past several weeks. I mean you. You mentioned geigo. Staggers throwing six and two thirds more innings for the year. He's in similar numbers of appearances. So this isn't about health this is about performance is he's the right handed jose alvarado. You can't walk everybody and get away with it all right but i wonder whether the injury history and the inability to rack up innings means that he's having some fatigue at this stage. Yeah he walked guys all year. But it's really coming back to bite him now. I won't draft the next year either role i think they try to make him a starter. And then he gets hurt or the leaving the bullpen. But he can't get away with these walks. And i think if you've only giovanni gago was a closer he could be as good as ryan presley. He could be matt barnes. He could be a top ten closer borderline top ten closer so to me. He's a must add right now for the rest of this season And yeah i think he's going to be very interesting if he's there closer next season so obvious opportunity. Certainly as he's up to it skills wise oh eighty eight whip. Last year was already seven year. Before that i was already one. We have a pattern here with giovanni go iago's you know he's not giving up homers hard to hit. He's terrific. He wanted user all year he really should have been the closer all year if they chose to make him the guy they drop in the high leverage spots. I get it. But he's one of the few who's been consistent career. We set on that last. Show not a lot of relievers do that. He does anyone else that we need to discuss. I mean call me the as i think. Yeah i think trevino may have lost the job. He's only pitch twice in the last ten days. Which told me he's hurt. So i haven't been a weekly league where i have to relief. Pitcher spots actually activated. Alex komai for the first time. Since april into a spot ahead of lou trevino and i i played for i. I have a shot in that league. And i decided that trevino was too risky at this point They gave andrew chafe and save last night against the yankees. Sergio romano save over the as well. He is not quite as well but he was called on to close. Trevino's should have been available. What do you do here. Did you leave trevino activists week. I would not because they made a distinct point over the weekend that they were moving away from him due to his recent struggles on the way he has been pitching. It is the right thing to do. strategies i don't recall oakland schedule off the top. My head check in where the yankees were with. I don't try to take all my own team schedule off the top man. I think they're in washington but the the point there is and there's teams that have only five games this week which also factors in his at detroit for three and then at toronto for three. The toronto one scare me away. Would you actually activate me like i did. I call him a sold. And i decided activate coma. I can still switch that. Actually games haven't started. But i'm not sure it's going to get all the saves for seattle and then there in houston which scared me a little bit. So yeah and the arizona. One while that's thought of as a favourable matchup pitching in that park against that line which does have the occasional guy who can threaten a pitch of there ought not as great as you is setting up stuck and writer saturday. Well let's just fluid roles call me at detroit. Today to cubs games than three tampa. Good pitching environment cubs schedule cubs are like baltimore right now yet that that's how bad things are for that team. Now they'll fix it in a year or two but anyone else chad green. I mean yankee situation is now set right. The lefty the angry left. He's back he's fine. I don't know that. I'd say he's fine but he's chad. Green johnny lasagna. Somebody tweeted me. Johnny lasagna's actually what yankee fans call elisa. Which i didn't even know about. How do i not know that it's like you don't know yankee fan or something i don't think i do. You're you're not. You're on your mets fan. Oh no you're going with a cat belongs now. Fun fun bias. Cats been punted off this show for the mets fan thing from years back. So don't join them. Take a look at the schedule now. Now let me ask you about corey. Kluber i mean what do you do here. You can't activate them in a weekly but due even use them in a daily. What's the pitch count. What are your expectations for the final five weeks. Corey kluber back today at the angels. Yeah and then. He's going to baltimore home the next time. I didn't check how far out it is after that No chance i start him. I don't think he's gonna pinch deep enough into this game. He also was not all that. Sharpen the rehab. Appearances velocity wasn't back. I know velocity doesn't matter so much with him that as it does with other pitchers but if you saw how he did before the no hitter earlier in the year is a little off and on i need to see evidence i need to see a star or two. That are quality for stardom. So it's a wait-and-see total you could are you starting at all like you any optimism. Here for him. I mean. I have optimism on everybody. "Is that off of 1 year old chapel and sister. Jean was clear to travel through see that she had a video game all year but has both doses of the code back seen. She's there. This is a this is a sister Jean free podcast. Well, we'll edit that out. But well let it and post. Yeah exactly. So you have to attack they're coming off of a c Championship. Then you have this battle of the bags with camera Crews and all off. And Moses right is player a c Player of the Year. Just a complete contrasting Styles Cameron krutwig. He likes him or paced game and half court and Lefty can hit jumpers from the elbow space. Good word game. I like them in jail handoffs and inside Pickle Fish finish won't on the basket First Energy is actually the 94th percentile and in pick-and-roll man scoring and they're very good and they're very good Coach Porter Moser Thursday nights on kenpom. They are number one and adjusted defensive efficiency. And then in Georgia Tech wants to wants to push and have Jose Alvarado kind of pressure and get five steals a game. So it'll it'll be like you said, contrasting stylistic Watcher. I am so excited to see Kim Kerr Lake here in the NBL next year. It's going to be great. Hope you first interview for the year Mike Mike. Divarco interesting Prospect Jose Alvarado, like great player great story really good Defender his improved his overall efficiencies score this year if off. If they would be Illinois and make the sweet sixteen and by the way, the Moses right Kofi cockburn match up in the Alvarado develop matchup like the against I would assume you would like their back pay like I am fascinated by potential Georgia Tech and Illinois matchup. I I like this Georgia Tech Team a lot. I'm very intrigued to see our Tech team play in the tournament. Yeah. I have to devote double figures in his last nine games had twenty and a c championship game. They're they're putting the pieces together obviously early in the year just past and said something like I think a team in the conference you make the the tournament and people look down those crazy and then he goes out and in wins it albeit in a a colored failed Escape tournament also, but they did win. So here we are. Okay, Tennessee, Oregon State Oklahoma state liberty, Oklahoma state is obviously Kayden Cunningham. I don't really think they have too many other interesting prospects. I'm not really a nice likely guy maybe. Yep. Tell me on Kayla bun in two years once he gets up to like two hundred forty pounds. Liberty does not also really have anyone that. I'm interested in. I'm also just not a liberty guy off don't don't need to dive deep into the Quagmire. That is Liberty. Tennessee has kylan Johnson and Jaden Springer if these if Oklahoma State in Tennessee get through both of their games sets up the prospect match up of the first two rounds in the NCAA tournament when we're will get Keon Johnson & Jake's in her against Cade Cunningham. What should be awesome and we can't have nice things but never pans out. I'm really hope I know right? Yeah. It's like there it is. Just when a game it's like no it's not people are even dead yet like USC like oh if they win like a couple and they could play Oregon or Iowa down there. It's like that's so far away. But this is just one game each. I have one kind of topical question in turn off. With Katie Cunningham was it yesterday on the athletic went live today? I talked to Candy yesterday. Yeah, very good. Very in-depth as a number one pick in the draft. Can you trust him when he said his favorite food is spaghetti. Yeah, it's funny..

"His only free throw Three was huge. Three rebounds, five assists in a steel and 31 minutes. Jordan ushers 16.7 of 12 shooting miss both of those threes, two free throws a rebound. You assisted at five turnovers, a blocked shot. Moses, right, started very slowly. I think he missed his first five shots, but he finished six of 14 for 12 points with eight rebounds, five offensive. In 34 minutes. Jose Alvarado is the guy who makes them go and he was the guy that got him starting the second half. He finished with 19 points and eight of 12, shooting three or four from three point land. He had six rebounds, five assists. And six steals in 40 minutes. He's got to be there Player of the game or if I was there, right And not so maybe you give it to devote Alvarado but Alvarado for sure. How's Sturdivant played? 12 solid minutes four points and two of three shooting. With a rebound. A little more. Khalid bore four points on two of three shooting missed a couple free throws, but he got three rebounds and a steel in 14 minutes. Rodney Howard. Backup center, played seven minutes, grab the rebound and had an assist. Georgia Tech ended up shooting 58% from the floor 35 of 60. They shot 63% in the second half 20 of 32. There were seven of 14 from beyond the arc 50%, including four of six in the second half. They only went to the free throw line nine times in the game. They made 5 56%. Ended up out rebounding, Notre Dame 27, 26 65 and the offensive glass, So the hours held their own. Their tech had 15 assists on 35 field goals. Just Nine turnovers. Two blocks, nine steals, and that was huge. Her name ended up with nine turnovers in the second half. They only had two in the first half for the Irish trey words. 18 minutes, missed all four of his shots, including a three Finish up played off 40. 15.6 of 15 shooting two of six from three point land. He made one of two free throws here. 10 assists. So another double double. For Prentice hub. So he now has five double doubles in his career and three this season. Also had two steals and a blocked shot a critical block shot that prevented at one point Georgia Tech from Taken the lead and the Irish, I think went up by six after that, but they couldn't hold it. John Durham was great, early and outstanding throughout the game, 18 points and eight of nine shooting some nifty moves in the paint. It included a Follow a jumper and his footwork around the basket. Just been terrific the last couple of weeks. He also had seven rebounds, some of them really physical, which is new for him. Two of them were offensive. He had three assists and a blocked shot in 25 minutes. He did have three turnovers. Nate, Let's Chesky Outstanding. 27 points, one office career high 11 of 13. Four of six from three point Land one of two from the free throw line. He had to.

"A Rams for Jared Goff and picks reported by NFL Insider Adam Schefter, who talked about it on SC at night. The Rams have been working on this for a few days now in the Detroit Lions really wanted to get this done and resolved as soon as possible, and there were other teams involved in the process as well, but it quickly became apparent. That the Los Angeles Rams wanted Matthew Stafford as badly as Matthew Stafford wanted them. Matthew Stafford was drawn to the idea that he was playing for Chamakh. They in the Rams offense with those weapons in that city, and that stadium, which host the Super Bowl next season, and obviously became quickly apparent. That those two sides wanted it to work and the Detroit Lions once they got all that compensation and return, keep in mind, they get back the former number one overall pick Jared Goff. They get to future first round picks a third round draft pick. Ah, lot of picks for Matthew Stafford, who they were going to trade anyway. It worked on all ends for all sides, and they agreed to the deal which cannot be processed. Told a new league year begins in the middle of March. Listen, it's never too much to give up for a quarterback that you believe in. Sean McVeigh is getting a quarterback that he's identified and studied at length already over the last couple of weeks. That he believes will be a star in L. A. Keep in mind. The Lions. New general manager is Brad Homes, Brad Homes formally off the Rams personnel department. He knows Jared Goff very well. And Dan Campbell, the lines New head coach, also looked at Gotham as somebody they wanted. So the Rams get the quarterback they want. Planter Chamakh Fay, the Lions get a quarterback that they know well to take over from Matthew Stafford, and they now will have double ones after this year in each of the next two years, Not to mention the throwing around pick in this year's draft way, always thought that this would be an unprecedented movement of quarterbacks during the off season and already We haven't gotten to the Super Bowl, where a week away from the Super Bowl, and we've already seen two former number one overall picks trade teams. It's just the start when you look at all the names that are out there. And all the potential moves that are out there. This will just be the beginning. And again. There aren't many teams. You could look at that. You know they're opening they started But, you know, we now know two. We know that Matthew Stafford's going to start for the Rams. We know that Jared Goff is going to start for the Detroit Lions. SportsCenter all night. ESPN radio. Let's get to some college basketball, Shall we? The SEC Big 10 classic happening all day. The SEC are the winners on the day, but we got a lot Of upsets. Let's start with number 16, Florida Taking on Georgia Tech in the second half.
