"Goes sky high over the mercury Houston takes game one over Boston the American League A bittersweet goodbye to the San Francisco Giants for joined by NPR's Tom Goldman Tom thanks so much for being with us Thank you for having me The WNBA history last night The Chicago sky won by about a thousand points so with the Phoenix mercury it was just 86 to 50 They're one win from the championship and it was a smothering defensive effort wasn't it By Chicago Yeah The 36 points With defensive in another way this morning yes The 36 points that was the biggest margin of victory in a WNBA final scheme And this is how crazy it got One of the players who doesn't get the same attention as the marquee names like Brittany griner or Diana taurasi for Phoenix or Chicago's case Parker Go ahead You're a fan The sky's kalea copper She had 20 points at halftime all the Phoenix starters collectively had 17 Yeah with a win tomorrow of the sky when their first ever WNBA title guarantees feedings will be better She said last night we'll be better than 50 You can take that to Vegas You don't have to go to Vegas these days It's all online but I know what she means Houston has to beat the Boston Red Sox 5 for lots of pop in the game wasn't there As predicted yeah no pop bigger for the home team Houston than a game tying home run by my favorite 5 foot 6 inch Major League Baseball player Jose Altuve Maybe the only one And then a go ahead home run by shortstop Carlos Correa and after he hit the ball Correa dropped his bat He's still not running yet He pointed to his wrist and he screamed This is my time And he's not lying you know He and Altuve and the other Houston infielders Alex Bregman and Yuri goriel They've been the foundation of this Astros juggernaut now playing in its 5th straight American League championship series October is their time Scott When you talk about pop in this game honorable mention has to go in a losing effort to Boston outfielder Kiki Hernandez He was amazing for hits two home runs and a diving catch to save Boston early when Houston had the bases loaded It's a little hard though to embrace Houston's greatness isn't it For non Houston fans yeah the 2017 sign stealing scandal it was 5 years ago but it lingers especially when Houston goes on the road and hears it from hostile crowds You know it reminds me a bit of the berry Bond saga the great San Francisco slugger who was well on his way to becoming one of the best players ever when he got linked to performance enhancing drugs And while still considered great that link will tarnish his legacy forever And you can see this great Houston team always having to deal with its issue I was sorry to say goodbye to the Giants What a season And what an ending Oh yeah A bad ending You know when a first base empire blew a call that ended a top game with division rival LA Dodgers the umpire called a third strike on a San Francisco batter when the batter checked his swing replaced clearly showed he didn't swing But you know Scott kudos to San Francisco manager Gabe kapler for taking the high road He said he was disappointed in the ending but the Giants had other opportunities to win the game and they can't blame it on the blown call Tip of the cap to him and the Giants who surprised all of us with a league best 107 regular season wins Yeah It's just terrific Great great year Dodgers and braves tonight We'll talk about them next week Tom Goldman thanks so much You're.

"And get it taken care of James click astra's gm here on seven ninety james without a and his struggles in the month. There's main obviously pretty well documented. But he's such a great player in a great postseason player with the guy like that. Do you trust that. He'll work his way out of his slump for the month. Or is it something that you guys discuss. Just kind of. Stay out of the way and let the veteran take care of his business Jose altuve has forgotten more about hitting than i know. So personally i stay out of the way on that one The guy has a track record That's you know impeccable. So i don't want to overreact to it at the same time you know when you see one of you guys. Struggling one of your key is You know not getting the results on the field that that he would like to get. You always wondering is. There's nothing i can do. Is there something i can do to help out. And so you know we'll always keep those conversations with him and with every player we keep an eye on everybody's performance and making sure that they have everything they need and that they're locked in but You know when it comes to hitting We're gonna trust to figure it out with With his teammates coaches you obviously has a system where He can get himself right and when he's right. He's he's pretty impressive. Kyle tucker and this has been on my mind. It's i may not even be relevant. But i i'd like to know just because you're an expert at this and watching him. I think he's so good. I do his command of the plate and he's going the other way and i know you know that it's a captain obvious statement but if you were evaluating him and you hadn't seen much and the only thing you'd seen as the way you've watched him swing the bat and play defense this year. Well how would you evaluate and what what would you. If you're a right in the scouting report how would you write it up about kyle. Tucker right now what you've seen I think you have to talk about the potential for a five to guy. Honestly i mean we're talking about here. We talk about hit for power. We talked about running tro field. These are all parts of his game. We've seen him still basis. We can Throw guys out in the field him. I think he's well above average in right field. They obviously was final goals last year. I mean you know the he does everything that you want a baseball player to do And the ability honestly to stay in their against lefties hit lefties just as well as writings Or at least not. Be one of those guys. Who's who team can bring in a killer And get them out. I mean the fact that he and alvarez to have the ability to hang in there against both sides really adds a a real element and You know something that that might get glossed over a little bit. But that would be. If i was out there scouting probably be part of my report is You know there's some lefties where something about their bad path..

"In that clip. Poor second baseman Jose Altuve. He may have what they call in baseball and other sports the yips, and they felled many a lesser player three times in the serious Altuve A has Basically lost the ability to throw the ball accurately, even short distances. He's been bouncing in the dirt, and two of those three bad throws have contributed to Houston. Losing. There are many who say this and the Astros losing the last three games is karmic payback. For their sign stealing scandal in 2017 the year they won the world Siri's, but I don't know are you have to feel sorry for l, too? Have a He's a popular player, Smallest guy in the field. Who does great things most of the time. Totally. So what makes something like that happened to a great player besides karmic payback. All right, often fear fear of failure of not being able to perform. I mean, it can happen in anything, but we see it most dramatically in sports. It happened to me, Ari when I was a competitive tennis player many years ago, when the ball would go to my four Really when when the ball would go to my forehand side, My mind would go. Oh, and my arm would shake and I couldn't execute a forehand. What had been a pretty simple skill. The key to fixing it. If you can is banishing the fear, stopping those nasty voices and locking back into the present, which is where elite athletes spend most of their time. I'm sure I'll Tuesday is being counseled, or at least Telling himself to do just that to get back into that flow state athletes talk about when they're simply doing and not thinking that is NPR sports correspondent and former competitive tennis player Tom Goldman. "You prove Because you don't even show up. You don't even have a pulse. Your team didn't have a pulse up against the raise. The Rays are beating up and they're smacking you around. And isn't there a little baseball karma there Because you would say Jose Altuve was wearing a buzzer even though there's been no proof of it. I thought Jose Altuve was wearing a buzzer when he wouldn't rip off his shirt and all that nonsense and do that publicly when he was rounded third and hit the walk up from one last year. They'll see has to take care of the Yankees and go back to the World Series before they lost to the Nationals. That was bizarre to me. Oh, yeah, my wife doesn't like when my shirt gets ripped off, so they run into the locker room change into the championship shirt Ale Championship. And then go and celebrate with the team on the field publicly. That was bizarre to me. And now all the sudden, Jose Altuve a who's a good fielder can't remember how to throw a baseball. You can't throw it. The 10 ft from second base toe toe first base, The 10 15 ft. I'm not a big believer in the baseball gods or the hockey gods or the football gods. And I sometimes will say that I'm not like a big believer in that. This time baseball gods. They looked around, and they said Okay, we'll give you a little hope will give you two victories to Siri's victories in the first two rounds. We'll give you a little confidence. Oh, yeah, We're going to prove everyone wrong. Goto shut everyone out, And then we're gonna Take away your ability to throw right. That's the only explanation you have for Jose Altuve. I don't get it. We forgot how to throw a baseball. I think I might be just that This whole thing has got his head so badly, and he's struggling at the plate. He's not getting the signs all year. All year. Whole team all year has been struggling at the plate, right And so that gets in your head. You're not doing well at the plate. Then you're thinking about it. Then you start getting the yips in the field. So I think that might be too. What happened with lt because it's bizarre. He won hop that throw, and it was a short throw to second base. I remember this is not. I know it's a 60 game season, so anything could happen. That's a 29 and 31 baseball team in the regular season. Mental side of baseball. When you know you're guilty, you could tell everyone we're innocent. It's a bunch of hogwash. Shut your mouth. Get the facts, blah, blah, blah. There's a guilty conscious in there. And we saw some signs in the regular season. Yes, they suffered injuries. Verlander goes down. This is the entire year. We're seeing more signs of that were all to J. O. I just forgot how to throw a baseball forgot to do it. All right. Let's get to Levy on Bell. Some teams that makes sense for him. First two teens. I thought of the Bears in the 40 Niners. Now the 40 Niners. They get back for he most of last week. They do have Jerick McKinnon. They could use another offensive weapon because levay on Bell is just not a running back. He's also good in the past catching game. No throwing, dumping the ball off to him in the back out of the backfield, and I still think he has something left in the tank. He took that year off in Pittsburgh, then goes to the Jets. The Jets are miserable situation. Had an OK year last year was not great, not the same levy on Belle if he is motivated if he wants to prove people that The narrative about him right now is wrong. Then I think he'd get back to being a very good player probably won't be a lead again but could go back to being a very good player. So I may seem like the 40 Niners. I would have interest if I'm a team like the Bears after losing to re Cohen I would have interest as well. And they definitely more options. Because really all Nick Foles has to work with is Alan Robinson, the Patriots? This is a Patriots move ever seen one I know they have their bevy of backs, but Sony, Michelle, now on the eye, are expected to return at some point. Wanted to be so patriots given $56 million Tango or whatever would be $89 Million. And you know what? The costs of bay because he just got a lot of money with the With the Jets because that was a four year deal. Any did even get through year too. So there's going to be a lot of money going his way maybe takes a cheaper deal. But the Pats of Cap room with all the guys opted out. With all the players leaving in free agency. They got cap room on the Pats. I would go on out there and I would get Levy on Belle to team up with Camp, who is expected to return this weekend, returned to practice tomorrow as the Patriots who have the Broncos on Sunday at one PM Miami has been rumored If I'm Latvian value, not going to Miami to win. Not going to Miami because it's the best situation. You go to Miami because you have a house down there, and it's for your personal life. How about Kansas City? Kansas City is an option for everybody. Does. That team has so much talent, and you could never have enough talent in this league. Maybe Kansas City brings him in. Remember, last year, Kansas City brought in a washed up ashore. McCoy. You don't have Damien Williams? Yes, You have quite a bird's lair. You don't need him. In Kansas City, but it could be an option Chargers with Claire being hurt. The Browns Chuck down. I don't know when he's going to come back. That's a team that you don't need him. But it would be fun with the Browns Pittsburgh connection, even Pittsburgh. I don't think it goes back to Pittsburgh because how it ended. Where they were taken things. Players were taking things from his locker. And then he told the team. I'm coming back that I'm not coming back and be there. By this date. Pittsburgh could use them, though James Connor has been up and down any style at one Good week. Yeah, the Eagles will be thrown out. Their cardinals could be thrown out there. Grams. And you know what? We talked about Kansas City with.

"Toss, Come said Here comes his 60th pitch. Breaking balls hammered left field Good wass, and it's gone. A three run homer by Korea and the Astros leads 5 to 3 didn't have it down. Regular season, But I do think, in some senses a testament to the strength of the organization. You look at what happened to this there without the two best pitchers in the league that they had last year. Garrett Cole obviously left for the Yankees. Justin Verlander is injured. Without their best power hitter. You're done already there with that They're closer. And yet, as we've seen so far in the playoffs, there's still more than a competitive team. That was Ben Reiter, longtime baseball writer. He was the one that penned the cover story for Sports Illustrated about the Astros being the 2017 world. Siri's three years before they did it, and then of course they did it. He joined us yesterday on the show, The Astros won 11 6. And they got monster innings and Monster home runs and clutch hitting. And yet again, here's Jose Altuve, a with a crucial R B I and a home run late in that game, a two run shot in the bottom of the seventh, which basically close things out to make it 11 before. Carlos Correa had a to R B I singles will arrive R B. I single in the eighth or the sixth rather and just overall, they're good players came up huge. Korea had that home run. A three run shot to make it 8 to 5 to three rather in the fourth inning. They Are back, and this is ruining the storyline that America wanted to hang his hat on. The Astros were only good because they cheated. The Astros only won a World Series because they banged on those damn trash cans. Slighter. It was not supposed to be this way. This was supposed to their comeuppance. This was supposed to be when we got a pound of flesh. This was supposed to be with the Astros fell on hard times they would learn their lesson because their own aura so smug The players were so defiant There was no humility, no apology that felt anywhere near authentic. The Astros fell like they cheated, and then they rubbed it in everybody's face. Nan Adam and we're still playing. We don't have to give back our rings. And then Rob, Manfred said was a piece of metal and it just threw us all in this tie is a well You know what Karma's a basting, You'll get yours. Astros It was great. Verlander was out. They were sub 500. They were terrible in the regular season. They've lost Garrett Cole in free agency. This was the comeuppance. Another back in the LCS. And this one hurts because the longer that they play in the more that they win, especially without Verlander, and especially without coal. And especially now that they can't Chico. They're not at home as well. They're playing on neutral site games. What does it tell you? It tells you Crap. They're actually just a really good baseball team. Now. Doesn't erase what they did. They cheated. It was bad. They deserve a punishment. They didn't really get it. Whether it was the bank on trash cans, whether it was buzzers whether it was a million other things. They were looking for a competitive advantage that was illegal and help them win a world. Siri's What Look. The fact is, they're really good team with really good players and really good organization, and that's just not going to go away. This is much like the Patriots after spy gate. I always said this about the Pats spy gate sucks and deflate. Gate sucks for this reason. They never needed to do it. This wasn't the Jets trying to find it up her hand. It wasn't a Bengals trying to win a playoff game. It was a team that could win Super Bowls and maniacally couldn't help themselves. They were too bloodthirsty, tto win. It got too crazy. It was like a guy that's already a millionaire because he's a hedge fund millionaire or because he is a CEO of a fortune 500 company or something like that, and then has to cheat on his taxes and Has to steal money from so much. Somebody is accounted a Ponzi scheme. It's like, Don't you have enough? You don't need to do that. You don't need the second yacht. You know, it's It was unnecessary for the Astros to do this to still be winners. It was unnecessary for the Patriots to do that to still be winners. And yet they did it because they're maniacal. And that's what we're learning again about the Astros. They didn't need to do that Toe win. It certainly helped him. Don't get me wrong obviously helped him that splits show how much it helped him. Right? This year back of the LCS. And whereas I know you want the Astros the worst thing that could happen to you, big boy. Is that the Yankees win this Siri's tonight. And then get but both Assad or busted by the Astros, the LCS and then you've got to sit back and realize they beat you. Not only when they were cheating, but also when they were playing fair so you can't go back on your silly We deserve the world. Siri's give it to us. You should just hand the world serious to us. We lost But to cheaters, you know you're not gonna have that leg to stand on your I completely agree. And I don't want to come across as piggy doodle doo. Because this goes for the race to tonight is tonight is Game five. The word die game for the CS. I'm gonna go. Apple is everybody's love for Houston here and just tell you one thing for 15 to 20 years. Notoriously, the two biggest wastes of space in the major league postseason have been the Minnesota Twins in the Oakland A's Every year. Doesn't matter they get in, and they are complete and utter waste of time. And that is exactly the stars that got a line for the Houston Astros here. Look if MLB had done the right thing, and I had to go with a stupid bracket is if anybody was going to fill this out. March Madness style thie asteroids would have been playing the raised this round. The Yankees were playing the A's, and it would have been the right thing for Major League baseball to do instead. The Astros got in. They have some playoff pedigree. I'm not sure they're of how they obviously doing that lineup there. Pitching isn't what it used to be has been writer pointed out without coal and without Verlander. They got the Minnesota Twins who laid down like dogs every year in a best of three, and that's exactly.

"A great call because no one's gonna know that come after me for going to and for making fun of Jose Altuve okay let me finish short I'm not tall I get it how tall is Jose Altuve in these days one five six I think I'm taller than Jose Altuve act yeah you should be you are Jose Altuve Hey it's five six all right so I mean the question is this right like as we sit here and we take in everything the way baseball's handled this pandemic in this summer with virtually no plan right now in place no plan going forward and really no way to actually save face for the summer because like if they came in and said sixty games we're starting up at the end of the month theoretically with the four major sports in the United States America you could be back before everyone else in in all this back and forth in us making fun of baseball and everyone just complaining about everything in baseball related they could theoretically get on the field play some games who can forget about it like I'll be cool with that but if they came out tonight said sixty games we're gonna start in a month there you go they beat back the MBA to be back NHL and obviously they would they would start up before football I'd be okay with that there would there would be no issue something like of course this is been annoying to hear the back and forth between the two sides but I'd I'd say okay fine you're gonna play games I'm okay with that that's fine that's what we want but they have no plan in place whatsoever it's kind of crazy to me that we're still sitting here it's June twenty second in Major League Baseball has zero plan right now in place yeah it's it's crazy because you're right they have had the most amount of time now hockey hasn't set an official date they're going to try to figure that out with the health issues and they don't even have hub they don't even have places the player the one city that is the one to support I mean that seems to have their blank together is it the MLS is pretty much is set to go and also the the the NBA they have a city they have a bubble they have a way to get there Toronto is already there the rafters are already in fort Myers they went there today the star quarantining to get ready for this and by all accounts every NBA player has to tell their team whether or not they're going to participate by Wednesday yeah is it the twenty fourth is the deadline for players and you see a few players come on so they're not going like Trevor Reza said today he's got some family stuff that he's dealing with with his son in a custody battle so he's not going only gets you some for a month so he's not going to go because he doesn't want to forfeit that time of the family completely understand if you have a reason to forfeit the season I completely understand it completely get if you've got a fairly recent if you've got a health reason if you want to be around your loved ones because they're sick I accomplish I'm not gonna trash any of player for not being around if you don't think it's safe enough and you don't want to go who mine to tell you that years to think it's too safe I'm not wanted I'm not judge and jury here if you don't want to go don't go it's fine but ultimately the NBA seems set on their ways of playing at Disney even though the cases and the amount the positivity rate continues to go up for Florida they figure word a bubble we're not technically in Orlando we're on the campus of Disney world we'll be fine we'll be separated from everyone else we're actually on the beaches welcome to the club rugby at the bars we're not going to be like the the women's soccer team in Orlando going to bars and and for them having to withdraw from their tournament because a few of their players tested positive after going to a bar in Orlando so they think they're going to be fine no there remains to be seen but ultimately they have a plan baseball an outdoor sport could've been playing you could even playing baseball games going on right now if you did it the right way if you were in cities before the spikes and everything like that you had players that were quarantined and taken the proper health measures you could complain right now it was better in Florida and Arizona I'm going to go the case is a star despite now would you describe your feelings as confident that they will still be a season I'm not confident comes back into his lair he's not going to speak tonight Manford no what what is that Bain nine.
Are the Astros really being targeted for hit-by-pitches this spring?
"Astros batters are getting hit more than other clubs here so far in spring training but the beatings don't appear to be revenge for the sign stealing scandal seven Astros have been hit this spring including stars Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve a but both were next on breaking balls late in the count deliberate purpose pitches usually our first pitch fastballs commissioner rob Manfred has warned teams not to throw at Houston hitters over the team's twenty seventeen cheating scandal dads feel Hewlett reporting the Astros not getting being tonight to take on the Miami Marlins and great for
Mike Trout rips cheating Astros, calls for bigger punishment
"Happy Spring Training has been so happy so far. No I was GONNA say being the leadoff hitter is generally a good thing but not if the leadoff hitter for the Astros in two thousand one that might be a little bit dicey so on Monday Mike. Trout spoke in baseball circles. I really feel like it's words that are being carved on tablets might trout use. The Word Cheat. He noted the absurdity of the advantage of knowing what pitch is coming at this Take Note Jim Crane any express frustration over the fact. The Astra's haven't been disciplined. He spoke forcefully as forcefully as he has an N. issue baseball. And if you're the astros in your angry the world right now this might be the moment that forces you to look in the mirror I really feel like when Clayton Kershaw sees about the said something the Astros might dismiss it as well. Those guys are sore losers because we beat them. When cody bellinger said something they might think. Well what are you talking about your strikeout machine? In the two thousand Seventeen World Series Boba shed Gleyber Torres. Come out and said things they might think. Shut up you too young to say anything. One might. Trout says something that has to resonate even with the most defying the Astros. Because not only is a great players you know. He's also incredibly respected within the sport and they know him as a great in accepting person and so i. I sent on twitter this morning. That it's like getting yelled at by your favorite uncle. There's just something to it. What do you think yeah no look? I Applied Mike Trout. You know he's not always a man of many words. That's for sure you know. I'm sure he considered beforehand. What he was going to say he obviously knew these questions or coming to him so he took obviously a very strong stance towards not only the Astros but towards the commissioner so as one of the faces of the game. I absolutely applaud him for coming down. Hard on everything that's happened. So tell me how you think he's. Words would go over with a George Springer and Altoona Bregman Carlos Correa marlins not on the Astros anymore but certainly saw him early this spring address this because I feel like that they would just listen and say nothing. It wouldn't be any complaints among the Astros and Mike. Trout speaks in this way. What do you think yeah? It's a good question. You know for all the apologies. We've now seen the Astros gives since that initial press conference. I still don't know if there's a lot of remorse or regret at least I haven't been down there in West Palm was Houston. But that's the feeling I get from far that they did it. They know they're supposed to apologize. But they're still feeling of. We got away with it. We one where the champs so be it So I don't think that feeling of remorse. Is there now. Is that going to change? Because Mike Trout says he's lost respect for them. Probably not you would hope they. Would you know do a little inner self reflecting and sink a little more about their actions? But I think they're also it's also easy to say. This happened in two thousand seventeen. We don't care moving on and maybe that's what the sport itself does need to do at some point this spring and I feel like that is best for the Astros at this point. Let's face it. They've taken a lot of incoming shots they punch back the other day. I think it's time for them to stop worrying about trying to save what they've already loss. You know watching Carlos Correa over the weekend pushed back a talk about individual situations in the world series when they weren't cheating and I I thought it was absurd. Yes we were cheating in the first inning the second and third inning but in that run-scoring spot in the fence. We weren't cheating you know and to extend my a comparison the astros with someone who cheated in neighborhood poker game. Can you imagine if someone said? Yeah we dealt from the bottom of the deck with firsthand second anther. We played that fourth. Hand straight up like other players. Don't WanNa hear that and I feel like that while Carlos was passionate in trying to absolve Jose altuve and trying to draw lines. It's a waste of time. Their legacies in cement. It's over in terms of the Court of public opinion. No absolutely and we all know. There's only one solution for the Astros and that's to go out and win the World Series in twenty twenty and at least remove the cloud of suspicion for this season. When we're pretty sure they're not gonNA Poll any shenanigans released today extent. They have that is the only way two thousand seventeen as you said that legacy is incident. You know it's always GonNa be be doubt now. They're going to go out and prove that they actually are as good as we think they. They are at least as good as they've been the last three years
Astros' Jose Altuve alleged to have buzzer under jersey to cheat
"They need to Major League Baseball needs to do a serious investigation on some of these players like out too vague because they'll be able to find out I believe if they really want to know the truth I'm not sure of Major League Baseball wants to know the truth because all too there is such a beloved guy you know and then one of the best probably the best you know hit one of the best hitters in baseball do they really want evidence to come forward to show that al to van Bregman somebody's other guys were wearing electronic devices just like Major League Baseball didn't want the steroid stuff to come out I think they're full of crap I don't think they want the stuff to come out I don't how on earth if you are Major League Baseball how on earth do you allow this stuff to happen to not know anything about it how can a team keep this quiet for the entire year and by the way I don't buy the fact that it was only last year I can tell you that I they were probably doing this for several years Cora all these guys they probably were involved with this for a long period of time don't you tell me right now that all to say do you know deserves to be the MVP don't you tell me that now when you have an advantage like that were you know not only the type of pitcher gonna be getting but what part of the plate it's going to be on the location and you're a professional Major League Baseball player for Christ's sake there's a lot of college shooters that could probably get some hits and and and and perform if they know where a a major league pitchers throwing the ball and what kind of picture gonna get no wonder while to be had a metal part in fact I'm surprised they didn't have more out of the park in that series or any series in the playoffs it's a joke and it's a job for everyone to say that all too they should be punished at all for this and I believe one hundred percent that he was wearing one of these devices I believe there are other players on the Astros are wearing these devices as well so this is this is indefensible in my opinion Major League Baseball you better do your job you better find out what happened here the store is not going away no and I think they will do their job I think that in again there's there's no guaranteed evidence but there there's definitely some there's some evidence that points to it looks like this is probably the case they should lose their championship in two thousand seventeen like I said and how to obey and Bregman anybody warring those buzzer should be banned from baseball
Houston Astros' Carlos Correa's defense of Jose Altuve
"Astro shortstop Carlos Correa was very outspoken over the weekend about the accusations against his team some of the comments that were made around baseball on Friday and after about the Astros most notably most famously Cody Ballenger who played for the Dodgers was very critical of the Astros was very harsh on them on Friday and didn't hold back when he thought that he believed Jose Altuve a stolen MVP award for Erin judge that the Astros stole a World Series from the Dodgers and the Dodgers have a very very legitimate gripe on the conversation around the sign stealing and the accusations is the Astros in two thousand and seventeen Dodgers fans and the Dodgers faithful and the organization itself have a very serious scribe much more serious than the Yankees gripe when they didn't score any runs in the four games of the Astros won and I understand that that doesn't totally excuse the fact that the Astros cheated and again to me it doesn't matter how much she did or didn't help them they cheated and even if they tried to cheat and couldn't decipher the signs that still cheating and that's still against the rules and you should still be heavily criticized alternately punished for that so the Dodgers have a legitimate gripe Ballenger I don't think was really that far out there on anything that he said but Carlos qureia the Astros shortstop came to the defense of his team mate I thought qureia had more than a few comments that worked out good for him and the Astros and I thought the career had more than a few comments that did work out great for him and the Astros so I'll start with the good comments the comments the winning qureia's favor first a middling comment or two in the ones that it Corradino great job talking about the Astros first of all qureia's comments about wholesale to very and clearing Jose Altuve base name those are probably the best pieces of evidence in vindicating wholesale to very not the Astros Jose out to pay for what happened in two thousand seventeen qureia made it very clear to Ken Rosenthal the athletic multiple times they'll to they did not cheat he did not want the banging going on during his at bats if there was banging that went on he told them to stop banging during his at bats and I know many people are saying well the water hose out too vague apologize for what happened well wholesale to they apologize for not stopping it he did apologize for using the system he apologized for not stopping it's qureia talking about to say and how he didn't like it again I thought that was a really good comment and for people critical of the tattoo story for Jose out to very not wanting his shirt ripped off in the walk off home run situation in two thousand nineteen if Carlos Correa's going to defend wholesale to rate and a lot about it wouldn't he create something a lot more believable then Jose Altuve a has a bad tattoo and I he don't want anybody to see it and I didn't want anybody to see it so we can refer shirt off when they're when the light there'd be a little bit more believable what would you try to make it less far fetched that yeah he'd like us to add to that moment so we don't want anybody to see it by the way we got a little bit more to the old the wife didn't want the shirt ripped off qureia said that Jose Altuve ETS wife called his wife I look I'm not married but I've had girlfriends I've got a girlfriend now and we girlfriends talk to girlfriends when wives talk to whites when girlfriends talk to whites stuff gets done okay ladies when they get together and they run those households and they want their men to work together on something to get something done or to keep something from happening in the future it gets dark so I thought paraded a really good job clearing wholesale two days name I didn't want to believe Jose Altuve they cheated they were obviously bangs on the trash can during out to pay it back so we can see on video and we can hear on these audio clips the people have started to break down on social media and it became very clear that Hey the people the Baylor Trask and sometimes they just banged it and then I'll to base it don't do it and even somebody on social media clocked all the bags that he heard on on video and they could say that it never really happened more than once it out to vase at bats and sorts of was I thought courageously good job clearing up to his name I thought he did a pretty good job showing remorse he apologized a bunch of different times he explained that the Astros have to live with that that they have to put their heads down at night the to think about the fact that they cheated on their way to a two thousand and seventeen World Series I thought that was a good amount of remorse he was the player the show the most from wars in interviews this week he continued to show more remorse not cheating in two thousand nineteen qureia was adamant that the Astros did not use the trashcan banking system in two thousand eighteen two thousand nineteen the commissioner's office said that they did not use that trash can bring system into thousand nineteen they did say the commissioner's office the commissioner's report did say they cheated two thousand eighteen credits plane that was the codebreakers system that was up stairs not the players he thought of the talk of the buzzers was ludicrous any claimed and double down yet again that they did it clean and two thousand eighteen and they did a clean in two thousand and nineteen unfortunately for Carlos qureia the Astros do you believe a cheater speculation on what they did or didn't do it's really tough to say those are the good things I think paraded the middling thing where I don't know if it's good or I don't know if it's bad what determined yet he would have to Cody Bilger decided Cody villagers failures as a baseball player in the playoffs in two thousand seventeen he went after the Dodgers he was fine doing that I like that I like with athletes speak their mind I like when they speak their opinions and I really like it when they talk to each other through the media so that we can all hear about instead of handling it behind closed doors like most people would do so here's what I don't think career did very well I don't think astro shortstop Carlos creation defended Jim cranes comments the comments the crane made at his press conference we're not sure how much it helped qureia that day said to help them and the career went on to say well crane never played baseball so he doesn't know he's on familiar he should have just declined to discuss Jim cranes comments in my opinion and then I don't think courageous a really good job talking about the World Series where he claimed that they didn't cheat the World Series because well it was too hard to decipher the opponent signs in the World Series we tried to cheat but didn't complete the act of cheating is not good enough but that's not a good excuse that's not a good call me well you know the the they had a lot of different songs that we we saw all the signs of we could decide from that's not a good enough the that's not a good explanation okay again I think the biggest thing for me and I don't know how you exactly feel but we want to hear from you at Cody underscore students on Twitter as well as one hundred two to four two zero zero four if you want to get in on this tell me if it helped or didn't help that doesn't matter to me they tried the system and by trying it they broke the rules okay the rules are not broken because they deciphered the signs correctly and it was an advantage for them the rules were broken when they attempted to decipher the signs using cameras and try to relate that to the batter that's breaking the rules okay the problem that qureia runs into here is I'm sure Astros fans love this heck I really liked it again I love the with athletes talk to each other through the media I love it when a guy comes out passionately defends teammate goes at different people who may be critical the team I love that okay but all he did was fanned the flames for the other twenty eight fan bases were really ticked off I see twenty eight because the red Sox is still under investigation and notice they've been very quiet on this thing will baseball finish up finishes up their investigation the red Sox the biggest thing here for the Astros going for for Carlos Correa for Jose Altuve a for any of those players implicated in cheating in their time in Houston they can't prove that they are innocent almost nobody can prove their innocence that's what members of the Astros have to rely on the commissioner's report so much they have to keep pointing back to that's why Jim crane leaned on it so heavily in this press conference those are the only people that can clear the Astros name it's easily proven that they cheated they've even admitted to at this point they can't prove that they didn't do it they can't bring evidence to the case and said look we're not cheating here the only thing the Astros can bring to the conversation at this point are there comments and their conversations about how they didn't do it let's be very honest with ourselves here how often do you believe a cheater how often do you believe someone who has wronged you when they say I didn't wrong you like you think I wrong to you but I did wrong user how often would you believe that person it's very hard to believe the Astros it's very hard to believe them when they say they didn't cheat and two thousand eighteen or they didn't change in two thousand nineteen and that's why conversation persist about buzzers and a lack of a thorough investigation by
Bregman, Altuve apologize for actions in 2017
"A couple of Houston Astros players have apologize for their actions in twenty seventeen when they sold signs and cheated on their way to a World Series victory all stars Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve Hey made brief statements on the first day of spring training in west Palm Beach
Houston Astros’ Altuve, Bregman apologize
"Afternoon the Houston Astros are apologizing sort of kind of yeah yeah for the aspects yes on a west Palm Beach the place to be the Astros opening up spring training and the owner and players Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve they apologize in brief statements today for their roles in the sign stealing scheme twenty seventeen of course and owner Jim crane had to deal with a number of questions after saying things about that they'd sign stealing didn't necessarily help them win so ESPN's Molly Rivera then had a follow up to him fine feeling is a distinct advantage for the header so how is that it doesn't affect competition so then what are you guys apologizing for were put apologizing because we broke the rules but is in fine feeling a distinct advantage for the header so doesn't automatically impact competition it it could possibly do that it could possibly not all right the kid maybe maybe not darn those reporters for asking Patrick last name I couldn't get over a listing tears so there you have it the Astros have started at spring training in poor dusty dusty Justin there yeah this brought in to kind of fix this but yeah they were they use the fixer is absolutely so the Astros spring training often running as the nationals pitchers and catchers first work out today at west Palm Beach full
Astros' Bregman, Altuve apologize for sign-stealing scheme
"At spring training in Florida owner Jim crane says the Astros didn't cheat we broke the rules player Alex Bregman apologized for the choices made by my team by the organization and by me Jose Altuve a also apologize we especially through remorse for the impacting our fans and the game of baseball Jim crane says Major League Baseball was right not to strip the Astros of the twenty seventeen World Series title because of stealing signs this didn't impact the game we had a good team we won the World Series and we'll leave it at that no players were punished but the Astros fired their manager and general manager I'm a Donahue
Did cheating help Astros win World Series? Hinch says we may never know
"Aj hinch and the interview. He did finally breaking his silence of the disgraced astros manager who was fired in the wake of the breaking story in major league. Next glad you said that the ask the disgraced astros manager he was not. There's nothing else to call him. He's a disgrace Astros manager He was caught up up in the science. Dealing Scandal of the Astros didn't do enough to stop it and the first thing rob Manfred did was announced his suspension for Major League Baseball and then a couple allows later. The Astros fired him. You mentioned the interview he did. It's going to air tonight. And he was asked. Does this championship that you wanted. Twenty Lee seventeen. Is it tainted by this new scandal. Unfortunately we open that door as a group in that question I may never be answered. We may never know we're going to have to live and move forward and be be better better in the sport but unfortunately no one can really answer. Threw that question. I I can't pinpoint what advantages or what what happened. Or what. Exactly what happened otherwise but we did it to ourselves. Okay wait I can answer. It had had a lot to do. Look at the home road. Splits of all your headers like Jose Altuve. Have you see our relay race. Home and road splits dislike. It's like four twenty at home one twenty on the road and you remember if correctly that was when they remember lost the Games in New York to the Yankees remember the laws and then at home the they won all games. I mean it was an if I'm a dodger fan. I'm salty as well 2017. MLB CHAMPION DOC. There are two parades coming twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen and then back to back. Alex Cora takes that same show on the road and same thing. I I asked we. We know of this movie Bets trae goes through. You know as as Alex Cora cheated to be named later. Is that a part of the look at you know. I think that was the penalty. Not was the red sox train. mookie Betts to the padres and they said No. No you gotta make amends and trading with the dodgers all right shoulder dodger you owe the dodgers at Aj Aj hinch clearly is in that mode all of us do this in our lives. Whenever something bad happens did the interview though he could he could run and hide for year and not be heard from? I think it's better when you get out in front of it. But is he getting out in front of my saying. I don't know what kind of impact this had. Clearly when you're batters know what's it's coming. It's a lot easier when you go to that length of we're putting in electronic sign stealing system and you play the. I'm only the manager card. I couldn't stop this. No one believes please. You know either. The point where he's at the point in his life and all of us do this right when something happens in our lives. It's bad that we're responsible for. What do we try to do at some point? We try rationalize why it happened. And it's not really our fault. Aj hinch is at this point where who knows what he's GonNa do in baseball again. He's going to manage again. Maybe a couple years somewhere where. I'm not quite sure that he's at that point. where I need to reconcile with myself because I am a world series champion and I'm not going to walk around every day going it was tainted? So I'm I'm GonNa convince myself that I don't know what kind of impact this had altuve as still had to hit the baseball even though he knew what was the old PD argument. So He's in that point of denial. where I'm going is still WANNA walk around and not just feel crappy every day that we won and we won by cheating? So I'm GonNa convince myself that I don't know what we we did. Any act on the game only problem is I get it if you told me that one every game at home then win every game at home even with the cheating scandal. Whoa with knowing what's coming? So that's the part that makes it hard that's why you can't go automatically and say well we should just turn championship over to the dodgers not that the dodgers. aww their fans would want it that way but they didn't win every game using that cheating system so okay so they won three quarters of their. But I'm just saying when eighty percent of they're games that that's the only reason and this could have It doesn't mean that Wa. The team couldn't have beaten them at some point. All I'm saying is I get it cheating. Cheating it helps them. I'm not denying that but it's a reason why you can't take the championship and I don't think that that will work for majorly based on you can easily take like the championship. And you can not awarded to anybody. Say No year but Rob Manfred and look rob Manfred and Adam. Silver are two of the new age commissioners which they they WANNA do nothing they want to do nothing but in grow the game and have great reputations right Adam silver wants to do a little bit less than Rob Manfred but rob Manfred I guarantee aren t you. He thought I'm taking care of this. Here's a suspension for hinch. Here's bench for Jeff Luna. I'm taking care of it and instead what happened. Was it mushroomed out of control to the point. Where an hour an hour after this broke? What was the biggest topic online? Put Pete Rose in the hall of fame. 'cause you're not taking care cheaters enough. This got completely out of control because Manfred doesn't WanNa be the guy where the first line of his wikipedia pages rob Manfred who presided over. MLB taking a world series away from a team for the first time Blah Blah Blah. Aw that would be his legacy. He wasn't going to do it he wasn't going to be the guy to say you're going to look back at my my rain and it's GonNa be pace of play but mainly it's going to be. He took look world series away. He presided over a dark time in major league baseball. He wasn't going to be that guy. I'm not gonNA wear it so I'm GonNa have this suspension and then whatever happens after it gets out of my control and I don't care that's why he didn't do anything. Yeah I I just I never been into it. Even college used to do it and the Olympics and taken away medals and stuff that we watched watched to tell me that Reggie Bush wasn't the heisman trophy winner. You know you could tell me that all you want but I watched that season. Do you know what I mean. So I'm not fully the Internet. I don't think that changes anything. That doesn't take their memory away from me. I think you've just got a penalize the organization but I I'm not into taking championships

"But here's the thing right because you have in this past week Major League Baseball comes out they hand out massive punishments as far as baseball goes there's still not enough as far as I'm concerned but this store punishment five million dollars to the Houston Astros owner you have AJ had suspended for year Jeff Lunel suspended for a year Alex kor that's coming down the pipeline and you get the actual fallout with the firing of hits the firing of Lunel the firing of core the firing a bell trim so all of these guys connected to the same thing that happened in two thousand and seventeen a World Series season the first World Series for bell trend the first World Series for hands the first World Series for the Houston Astros period and so now you get the punishments this week after tons of investigation of me going to thousands of emails talking to all of these different players and so think of the moment that this is for Jose Altuve a and Alex Bregman this week because what happened on Saturday is that there was a fan fest this same way Jeff will pond just wants to have Mike piazza drive you just what the dog you guys we're not talking about Belcher and I just wanna have Mike piazza drive today but that happened a couple of days ago before they fired Belcher and so this spring training promotional stuff bites yet again and for the Astros it's fan fest so Jose L. two VA and Alex Bregman all there in the same week these punishments come down for a franchise they had won the World Series big goes to the World Series last season and was considered under investigation for possibly cheating last season as well so you have to wonder what these guys are going to say right what's going to happen when you put a microphone in front of a guy like Alex Bregman Hey Alex Bregman you guys just went through this cheating scandal all of the good stuff is falling apart right now you look terrible as a franchise you were cocky is all hell in all of this by the way Alex Bregman along the way I mean my god you wouldn't shut up about how great you guys were so Alex what are your thoughts on all this Ford.
"Dozo with Sunday it baseball's Jessica and does and Jess Wow that game last night was insane that's the kind of name I got to tell you do the post-game work and you go back to the hotel and you're staring at the walls in the hotel room wide awake because you have so much his rental in and I was what about you because eventually I did go back to sleep but you had to get up like three hours later to get up this morning yeah it was up at five and then you write everything and I know now I have such an appreciation for writers because I like to give all of because I know that everyone that I'm working with this morning didn't watch the game and so I basically the right everything that I feel like we're the highlights of things I want to get into all the stuff I need them to look up graphics Oh that's put me up until one two in the morning and the I'm upset if I walk into work and getting ready to go so I'm a morning person it's been the nights that like that's why I'm so excited about this game six because I'll tell you what there's been a couple of games this world series where I'm like fighting sleep in the sixth seventh innings. I've only got a few hours this one I mean buster there were times I was jumping on my bed in my hotel room liking the TV Blake I'm sure my neighbors the hotel do not appreciate I'm like come on the world series game six you should be watching it was it was a nutty gate for the most part we'll put it this way in the first five games the world series there was one lead change last night we had two plus all the craziness for that game distinguish itself from the rest of the world series and I've got a laundry list of stuff to get tune we'll get into all of what happened last night but let's start with this I thought you know Dave Martinez what an emotional night like he goes absolutely nuts during the course of the game we're in the seventh inning stretch and he looked down the field and all of a sudden I see Dave Martinez being restrained by one of his coaches and he's going after the umpires he winds up getting a in our life by the Japan and their life go ahead the one who's restoring him he's gotTa winds up being rejected first manager in twenty three years to be objected from a world he's game and then after the game you get knuckleheads like me going in there and ask you know the right questions about how he felt in that moment and what did you think about the call I Dave Martinez handled it perfectly because he's like you know what I don't WanNa get any that I don't want to talk about that and he said it respectfully he said I I understand but you know what it's all about game seven in so many words and that's exactly what I thought he should have done in that moment considering what the outcome was there was no reason for him to relive all the details game unless they lose like I feel like and not that you want to relive it anyway and you WanNa take the high road but there was a moment there and this is for the people who weren't watching the game live but when you're watching it live during the entire time empires had the headsets on that that the showing trae Turner in the out just the emotions completely I mean honestly watching the broadcast they were bleeping out every other word was coming out of that dugout because it was so much emotion it felt like that something we're gonNA WE'RE GONNA be talking about this moment for years because in that moment it felt like the nationals are gonNA lose this game and this is why it's GonNa be because of this so I think Dave Martinez would have been a completely different person had anthony rendon day income and hit that home run I think then he would have been a lot more but when you win the game and it's like why go back in blow up that entire call a hundred percent and that's what I thought was really smart by him to not go back and relive that because they won the game and they force game seven and game seven will be started by Max Scherzer who chess on Sunday comes walking stiffly into the interview room in front of reporters he When he was answering questions he wasn't turning his neck he was sitting in his wheelchair and turning the whole swivel chair to talk to reporters and he was so down he gets a cortisone shot which pitchers talk about is being such essentially a miracle drug and then yesterday when we walk into the Ballpark here in Houston he's in catching the outfield and goes to Intel's Day Martinez I'm ready to go and you get the feeling that this could be something that could fire or at the players I asked David about that before the game yesterday about you know whether or not the players might rally around this any mentioned that time when Max fouled the ball off he was on face broke his nose and the next day Texan picture instead I'm good to go and he started that day with the black is Dave said that got the players fired up I gotta believe tonight there'll be so much adrenaline Max on the mound especially because I mean from that press conference buster and and for those of us that know him he was devastated Leanne devastated on Sunday that he could not help his team and I felt like it worked in the reverse like he could not hide the emotion of how much he felt like he was leading his team down and because of that and not because that's the sole reason they lost by any means at all but I felt like the team reacted to his devastation and not just him not pitching the overall vibe that he was giving like I feel awful that I can't pitch in game that I'm supposed to I think it works in the reverse for game seven because he is battled on everything he can the cortisone shot I think my only concern was shirt tonight is we've seen in his starts in this postseason him go one hundred ten and plus pitches how much length can't he give this team now the good thing is you know Daniel Hudson Sean deal those two pitchers you can use anybody pretty much out of the bullpen and there is more options for Dave Martinez out of the bullpen but what we've seen is they need length from these starters how much length can shares her bring your stuff was just flat from the get-go the guys more pitches than anybody in baseball this year over four thousand he just he just didn't have it and I think it was because he he's tired at the end of a long year and right that's the question about Max tonight on the other side we're GonNa see Zach ranking who's also looked tiredness postseason and I would assume that he's he followed by Garrett Cole I talked to Garyk before game six and asked him about how his ability with game seven was something he was handling because of the flight on the day last turn it had a similar situation where normally I would pen on day two but since we were flying I decided to it settled in DC and throw my pen on day three which for this week sets up pretty much the same exact way and I felt really good last week on day three so I'm just taking the same routine did last week to prepare for the bullpen as I'm doing this week to prepare for possibly having to pitch game seven yes I think he's GonNa wind up pitching like innings four through six tonight what do you think yeah I think so I think this is something that you definitely see and I think just for the royalva nats I mean to be able to get to that grinky you know the point that they want to be able to do they're going to have to do it early and once they do that knowing what is looming in the bullpen and that's one thing opposite of the nationals is the astros have so many guys that they can go to and Garrett Cole who has been the ultimate throw down the hammer are you know for the scene the one point I have to make with Garrett Cole and I know we've seen it so much but the last time he has pitched in relief you go back to his freshman year at us Cla I went and looked at this against the ant eaters gave up a winning run I mean this is like I know it's liked onion cheek like it's been how long since he was a little frothy with the Bruins this is something that I do think fans that now we've seen it time and time again from Randy Johnson no Madison Bumgarner these star pitchers come out of the bullpen it's not as easy is it looks folks he's talking about it being similar to bullpen game he's never done it really he's never done it as a professional he's never done it with the Astros this is something that I think you definitely look for especially early on if he's coming in mid inning what what is he doing where's his heart rate because it's definitely different than than coming in just as the starter all right let's dig into game six last night we'll start with this golf clap or Stephen Strasburg watching that last night just reminded me of how I felt during the two thousand fourteen postseason watching Madison bumgarner where he seemed so in control where even when there were runners on base pitching backwards coming back and counts by throwing off speed pitches he was just absolutely composed and in the end despite the fact that Max Sherzer got up at one point in the sixth inning there Stephen Strasburg still out on the mound in the ninth inning what a performance the fifth five no yeah this amazing to me again Jose Altuva and I remember in the moment I sent this note to our producer in the moment I was like I don't know what's GonNa Happen in this game but to me this is the stories this isn't even the game like that fifth inning at bat it to Jose Altuve to me was the series why I mean you have a pitcher or a hitter up to bat similar to the Anthony Rendon in the first inning where all you really gotta do is put the bomb play take one of those breaking balls fine whole get to the grass score some runs and respond and felt like to all the guys in that order that's what he does I mean that guy can hit anything and Stephen Strasburg you'll get three pitches he started on what the

"Kind of could be his own guy amid some of those superstars and now it's Michael Brantley doing a great job for Houston with, with my guy Jose altuve, who I love watching play baseball on the I L. So that's what we're watching in the studio right now in case you are wondering. Oh, lots of phone calls. Eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six lots and lots of phone calls. Let's go to Tommy in new Hyde Park. What's up, Tommy? Hey, I'm great. How are you tonight? I'm Jackie Gleason thing. Okay. I don't know what that man of hold on it. L boy. I got all the time in the world. I got. I know that. Cracking I have high. Now I acted it out that thing. Now, we need a spot now, can't, we need your Sparta? Are you on a speakerphone because I'm having trouble hearing you but I actually do. Okay, I need you to pick up the telepho-. Speakerphone opin. Yeah. Thank you. Okay. Now. Crap. Tell me I can't. Speakerphone wasn't good. And then we went to a disaster of connection, sorry, Thom Jackie Gleason, and Ralph kramden and the Mets need a spark. They need something. Jimmy on Staten Island. What's up Jimmy? Hey, how are you? Good. How are you? Good. Good. So I guess my my thing is this is my problem of big Yankee fan. Baseball fan in general. Everyone. How much does he really have? When you bring a lineup to him every single game all supposedly or I'm sure the athletic department has as a pot to do with the lineup. Why are we told him of firing a coach manager, why not go to department and Fido guys will put the team together? Those guys will put together those guys decide went to give guy day, all who you bring in won't matter because they just puppets for the next. I don't believe that for a second. How do you how do you explain GIO or shelhah GIO shallow? Well, well, that's the with the with the scouting department. See, now you're doing the same thing. You're blaming everyone else for that is not fair, Jimmy. You know what? You don't why Jimmy why he GIO is such a great story because he has come to the Bronx maximized every opportunity, not been afraid hit. The baseball play great defense. And none of that in particular now listen, you wanna tell me there's a position on shift that worked. Okay. Yes. That's analytics. But we have to stop by stop saying that the manager just simply has no role if that were the case, you wouldn't need one. I do think the manager's job has changed. And I've not really heard this anywhere else. This is me just thinking, which can be dangerous. Let's be honest, but to me the manager's job now is to connect and bring out the best in his players. Because you're right. He is being toy. Told by percentages by statistics by analytics and by numbers crunchers, who should play when they should play and where they should play. That's fine. But they're not robots. If you're going to turn this into robots playing the game of baseball, then you're right. The manager has no role but in the exhaust in baseball season baseball is such a grind such a grind seven years of it for me was was was enough, because it was such a grind for me. And I respect greatly the people who do it for much, much longer than I did their tougher than I am. Maybe not at the moment because I'm pretty frigging tough, but, but, but they have a tougher they are willing to withstand a tougher day to day lifestyle. Then I could have for that long. Couldn't identify. The manager now has to bring out his best in his players. Even if he's being told which players to play. That's what I think. The manager's role is the manager doesn't have no role. He has a role that has greatly evolved to include a bunch of numbers crunchers, who sit in the back and like spreadsheets. You gotta live with it. You know who was at the forefront of all of this, the Houston Astros. And that's how they rebuilt their organization. And that's how now they are yearly contender. I'm not going to accept that. You can't fire Mickey Callaway or any other manager you because all he's doing is putting together, what he's told to put together lineup wise, defensive alignment wise and everything else, then there shouldn't be a manager of the year award for one thing. That I'm not going to accept. Let's go to Barbara on Long Island. What's that, Barbara? Hey cam. Thank you for taking my call. First of all, I love you. You're amazing and anytime you're on. I try to listen. Thank you. I very much appreciate that, right? You're, you're great. I just wanted to talk about the fact that you mentioned that the fans have influenced sometimes in this area, -solutely just to mention that we had season, tickets, very expensive season tickets right by the dugout role Levin, and I have to tell you, we didn't get them this year. And it's because we were nervous about what was the product that was going to be put out. And that's all I wanted to say. And you're right. I think that the fans have have an effect, and, you know, the wilpon should reflect on the fact that sometimes they're not gonna make. A profit if they put out a product like this is a convoluted situation and has many facets, if not just Calloway, although I'm not a fan. I agree with you there. But that's all I wanted to say and love. You can. Thank you. Thank you. Okay. Thank you, very. Barbara and Barbara's. Right. The fans can speak with their pocket books. Their checkbooks their attendance. Sports talk radio. A banner in the sky with a little prop plane. Pulling it. We've seen it all here, we've absolutely seen it all. Let's go to Sam on Long Island. What's up Sam? Hey Ken, how are you? I'm great. How are you? Sam. Good. You know, I started listening to talk radio. I had a bad motorcycle crash in August. I'm all better now. But a car and the radio. Okay, I love your show. Thanks, quiet called them. Thank listen. You I coached when I was my two kids, and I'm no coach. But I gotta tell you that a bunch of ten year old boys, the demand, the team said when we were losing seven to one goes here you take over. I'm going to go watch my daughter play soccer. I went over to every kid and I said, you know what you can go out and be star right now. I said swing in anything you want. Go have fun. And you know we won that game twelve to seven really I swear to God sorry if you told me that I didn't hear you. They were ten years old, my daughter I coached her team in basketball, and nobody wanted the girls that were on my team. I was a new coach. I got the six girls that nobody wanted. Okay. I took him to the champ. Ship. Good. We had on they just, you know, we're interested in making sure that ponytails are good. Laces were good and having pizza at the end of the game. Could now is it every one of those guys on the met, you know, listen to be midst in to begin with? You have to be a romantic. They win they'd be twenty years. So don't expect that much. But you know what? Every one of those guys could be a spot. Now they could do it themselves. They don't need to manage if they really wanna play. They know how bad that team looks. They know have good. They could look if they had some try they could do it themselves and stop blaming on and everyone else. But listen. I really enjoy the two hours in traffic. I'm locked in when it hit you on to really big tweak. Thank you, Sam. And I'm glad you're all better from that motorcycle accident. Thank the Lord. Thank you. Absolutely. Thank you for calling Sam. You know, thank you, Sam. I kind of feel like I'm not gonna make a bad analogy there, the girls on the team who ended up, you know, the other coaches didn't want them and they won the championship or went to the championship. And that's awesome. I love that stuff. And that kind of stands alone, I will say that when you hear about people embracing the moment with the Mets right now, I think of the obvious McNeil, and Alonzo. And unfortunately Davis falls in there at some level I do think Rosario. There have been moments of promise for him this season. He's lost his way defensively for periods, that are a little bit wacky that I'm guessing or mental concentration type of stuff. But it's a short list. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for the professional athletes in this market in particular, to once in a while hearken back to before they had anything or two when they really did just love playing the game because I think this is I know this is a tough market. I know it is. And I have to believe that some of the better the guy who the athletes, I should say athletes who come through here and are better for it. And do good things on whatever they're playing field is or playing surfaces. I have to believe that the they. They have to some even if they're not aware of it. They have to keep a little bit of that romance of the sport that Sam mentioned as part of who they are. I have to believe that because he gets tough around here and it gets tough around here, sometimes really early, and it's really really really early for the Mets right now because it's not even Memorial Day. Not even Memorial Day, by the way. I'll be with you Memorial Day to my God. I hope we're talking about a better Mets ten days. What what's today today is Saturday? Memorial Day is a week from Monday. So that is about what nine days. Basically, in nine days, we will again will obviously tomorrow, we'll do this again. But in nine days, we will take the pulse of the Mets, and I will bring myself, but his garden gnome with me that day, and we will take the pulse of the Mets that day big time. And we will see if they are improved from the shoddy production. They are as we speak losing a series of the Marlins. Keep the calls, coming, I thank you for the phone lines being jammed at the moment. Eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six break Erica. And I'll be back with your calls. Not concerned, not concerned at all. He'll be back. It'll be just fine. Yeah, I have by zero concerns about this. Not concerned. All right. Angels have hired Brad office as their managers replace Moshe. I think I know what you guys are going with this one, the fuss on Brad offices, the new manager. I don't know if if I were an angels fan, probably not enthused probably through. I'm sure he's a great guy. He's he's a stud. I mean, Google it, Brad office. Great, great shirtless pictures I can relate. But I don't think he's if you're trying to turn a new leaf at this organization and move forward in a new direction. If you want to be the analytical type, you want to also have a manager thinks on his toes. I don't know if it's the right choice. I went away. These are. These are this is a team in a manager that need each other more than ever got at the at the most important time of their lives. And that's what's happening here is Brad ause Mus as been brought in to deliver a veteran type of approach. But under the understanding that we are progressive and we are a forward thinking organization, and this is your opportunity to use that Dartmouth education to allow us because I believe Billy up lers quote was we are looking for somebody who can understand probabilistic strategies moving forward. What that means is we are looking for somebody who understands that when we wanna start a guy. Who hasn't faced a guy and hit him second, it's because our numbers and our analytics and our homework tells us based on our simulations that he's going to be just fine today. So Brad, put them in the fucking lineup. Got it. And they're looking for Brad to based on his past experiences and the opportunity he has now to go. Okay, no problem. So that's what they're going to get. Red name, David, bell manager, thoughts on this. I'm coming home coming home sales. Come in. Didn't eight. The move. Didn't hate the move, but are you guys sorta surprised that a lot of these teams are jumping on managers right now? Like, wouldn't you. I guess that's sort of like, I think Cora got hired right after the world when you know, you know, but aren't there better candidates out there aren't there that have just maybe better options, but but if if they are jeered, who are those guys because Girardi was in this mix right as you already laid out, but didn't he say that he's waiting for the cubs. He didn't say it industry. Yeah. I mean, like if it comes from a place where I'm sure he said it to a guy who said it to guy so so so. So just think about that. You've got Joe Girardi who is waiting around for a job that is currently occupied by one of the most progressive and forward thinking managers in baseball under a GM who was one of the most forward and progressive thinking GM's in the game of baseball, and you are waiting for that job as a manager who was asked to leave a organization that is benching themselves as a progressive in forward, thinking organization in New York and you couldn't. You couldn't make it work there in that payroll in that environment. And now you're gonna wait around for Chicago..

"Like you said, it wasn't as easy maybe as last year to get to this point and realized we've got some work to do to finish it off the back, but. Yeah. If you would've told us since training, we'd have a chance to go back to the World Series. One game to go, we would definitely have taken that, I think. So it doesn't really matter how you get here, but thankful that we are here now for sure. And that's the easy stuff first. And last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app, we can get to the catch interference, call the fan interference call. I should say from the Red Sox Astros game that ends up being the difference. Again, the SOX win eight, six. You can point directly to a two run shop Jose altuve that robs two runs from the boards and a lot of people's mind. I think it was the right call, but one that's going to be heavily debated, heavily scrutinized because it ends up being the perfect difference. Baseball's unique like that in that you've got an actual clear cut way and places right on the edge of the diamond where fans can directly interfere with what's going on in the field of play. Doesn't happen. The NBA doesn't happen in the NFL hell and hockey. They built actual glass to keep you now. That's probably more for everyone safety than everything else, but you get the idea. There are very clear barriers in these other sports that make this impossible and in baseball is something we saw most notably happened. "What was it like being in the draft room for that traffic? Just at San, there were so many balls in the air. As you describe, it sounded like it sounded like the movie. I was trying to be quiet, man. I. Bad a place I was kind of in the corner, I, I wasn't going to record it. So I was tapping notes on my laptop trying to type quietly. So like Nolan Ryan wouldn't glare me something like that. But it really was. It was exciting for somebody like me. First of all, knowing that this access would be really special and that readers would enjoy getting the sort of you that they that they never get, but also knowing that, you know, I've been interested in what goes on in those rooms for a long time and asked a lot of teams over the years. Like can I just come fly on the wall? You know, just for a little bit to see what the room is like. And they always said, no. So to get a yes to kind of start this whole thing off, it was really exciting. But yeah, I certainly don't wanna stand out anyway. What was the process of writing this book like? 'cause I, I wrote a book couple years ago and I think about the timeframe you go from the World Series to this book coming out a few weeks ago, and that's pretty compressed compressed. It was. I guess what I would say is that I have been reporting the book and living the book and some way. Since two thousand fourteen, I have tons of reporting that I never used over the years as well. Like notebooks filled with it. I maintain my relationships of the people in the book like players front office guys over the years checked in as these various things were happening to fifteen thousand sixteen two thousand seventeen. I certainly had some more reporting to do after Jose altuve through Yuli gurriel to clinch that final out on November. I and I did a lot more, but you know, it was really go time right then. So kind of sold the book about two and a half weeks. Later on, I wrote ten thousand. We proposal, I should say, and then sold the book of that two and a half weeks later. And then I gave myself, you know, I'm a magazine writer, so I structured it as you have ten long magazine features about six or seven thousand words which are pretty long to do in ten weeks. So you know, one feature week and you're done. It was not easy. It's tough on the family, but that's how you take time off to do it, or did you do it alongside? I took some leave the sl gimme some leave. I mean, they're obviously the story reflects well on everybody there as well. So they gave me some leave to do it not very much. So we look forward into baseball. What is the impact of data over time? I think the data advantage is narrowing I do. I mean, you don't hear very much anymore about this team's onto some new kind of way of analyzing data or discovered some new sorts of data. Of course not going to tell you if they are, but it doesn't seem as if that's like a way to differentiate yourself going forward. I think the way to differentiate yourself going forward is to first of all, maintain your command of cutting edge data. Again, you need it to underpin everything you do, but to focus your work on trying to understand and quantifies this, you can these softer factors that we discussed earlier. And also one thing that the Astros are really focused on right now is not necessarily improving how they select players or how the analyze players past performances, but how they're going to improve the future performances of. Of the players that they have. Now, part of that is what we were talking before. As far as the growth mindset like they do certainly select four players who they believe have that growth mindset.
