"Here and orphan clinging to a stuffed animal A mom holding her newborn The Holocaust survivor who hoped history would never repeat itself These are among the first Ukrainian refugees to arrive in Israel ABC's jordana Miller joins us from Jerusalem with more on the refugees who made it on state sponsored flights from Poland Romania and Moldova Yesterday on the Sunday the first three planes arrived with about 400 refugees I would say it was about half of them are Jews and half of them were not And I can tell you from just watching the pictures of the landing here so many of these refugees still seemed completely shocked that this was a war that didn't anticipate saying goodbye to family that they didn't expect to have to leave and so much concern and worry on the one hand and on the other hand a huge sense of relief that they're in a place that safe right Probably before this war they would have seen news reports from Israel and thought it was a war zone but of course it's not And so they feel that they at least are in a safe place and for the Jews on that flight this is a kind of homecoming for some of them who either have Israelis citizenship or family here There's a huge Ukrainian Jewish population in Israel and a huge Russian Jewish population So these are people that are going to have a chance at least to start a new life And some of them even Holocaust survivors from what I understand That's right There were a number of Holocaust survivors that came and those were probably some of the most heartbreaking and difficult stories to hear about because this war and Ukraine has triggered those painful memories and the anxiety and the terror of what it was like to hide or be encamped during the Second World War when the Nazis were rounding up people and deporting them and murdering them on a mass scale So that really for people to have to be on the run again so late in their life at the twilight or the sunset we should say of their lives Just terrible So for those survivors they said they're just happy to know they'll never be persecuted again ABC's jordana Miller joining us from Jerusalem Thank you jordana Thank you 16 arrests so far an operation new day That's the plan released by Seattle mayor Bruce harrell last week to stop crime and increase safety in the city Paul Rivera talked to Casey McMurray of the prosecutor's office Four of those 16 are being handled on the federal level Now all of those arrests had a connection to the 12th and Jackson and little Saigon area There are many parts to operation new day which Seattle mayor Bruce harrell gave an update on Friday about There's police presence and other changes like closing bus stops but also arrests and prosecution Now officials say arrests made during the last couple of months were aimed at stopping fentanyl dealers or those who were in possession of drugs and were illegally carrying guns according to authorities The King County prosecuting attorney's office talked to us about this work I think we all see what's going on downtown And everybody in that team worked that was an operation today on Friday has the same concerns We want Seattle to look better than it is now We want people to feel safe We want people across King County regardless of whether neighborhood is to feel safe But there are some worries from the King County prosecuting attorney's office that some of those arrested were able to get out of jail due to getting a low bail or on their own recognizance as ordered by a judge While they said they haven't missed any important court dates yet we're talking about those 16 There is worry about them maybe missing in the future in part due to their criminal.

Chicago had said that the district would the school district would have a tentative hybrid plan for the fall semester, which involved kids back in classes at least For a percentage of the time. Now, they say they will not do that they will not welcome students back to the classroom in Chicago. They will rely only on remote instruction because of the recent uptick in the cove. It cases huge story that we saw yesterday was this thing. This explosion that took place in the port of Beirut right there in the capital of Lebanon, and investigators have begun. The search through the wreckage of the death toll is ridiculously high, is expected to go higher than the 1 35 that we know of right now. Jordana Miller is covering the story from ABC News joins us now with the very latest That's right. The numbers are certain to go higher and higher than the official 1 35 right now, enough because so many believe that dozens. They're trapped underneath the rubble after this massive Explosion there at least 5000 injured as well. We're hearing from hospitals. They're just absolutely inundated, really overwhelmed. They don't have enough doctors or beds or equipment. Eyewitnesses told story today that strangers in the street helped them recover that there were, you know, makeshift field hospital set up in some parking lot. Oh, and you know this was a devastating explosion. The radius now we think was about six or seven miles from the epicenter from the port. So it not only destroyed and brought down buildings in the immediate listen ity, but So far, 67 miles away and blew out windows and brought down buildings and you know the cars that were blown that you know of blocks away. I mean, literally the residents of free route Today we heard from them there in shock and grief on now that's turning into a little bit of anger as we learn about the fact that all of this may have been prevented. That it may have been due to negligence over the stored chemicals at the port. Can you explain the providence of these chemicals? I mean, were they taken from one specific shipment where they compiled over the course of years. So what We know from the initial reporting out of Lebanon that these chemicals almost 3000 metric tons of ammonium nitrate were taken off of a Russian own ship that came through the port in 2014. There was some dispute over the ship. It wasn't allowed to continue. To move them beak. It had come from Georgia, and so the cargo was confiscated and it turned out to be these massive amounts of ammonium nitrate. Now. Apparently, the operators of the port had gone to the government several times recently. It's just six months ago to say Listen, this is dangerous. We need toe. Get these chemicals out of the port. They're going to literally in one of the reports. You know, one of the operators of the port said this could destroy the root. Prophetic words because, according to the governor of Beirut, at least half the city has been majorly damaged by this explosion. The question tonight. Is also really what ignited the chemicals because they don't have combust. So was there a nearby you know? Ah, fire did some light munitions go off and fireworks go off. It's unclear, but this looks like a massive Oh, and tragic industrial accident that you know, many people in there were beginning to feel angry about that. It could have been avoided well are already a lot of anger in Beirut over what's been going on when it comes to the political corruption and the complete downfall of the currency there, down 90%. I believe since September, there was already a lot of unrest there with people not being able to take money out of banks and food security being an issue now. Absolutely. I mean, we've seen we've seen the last number six months. At least we've seen massive rallies and protests. Ah, some of them turning violent through Beirut. You know, there have been demonstrations, anti government demonstrations against what many call endemic corruption on DH. Ah, lot of pushback against Hezbollah, the Shiite militant group there that many 11. These are beginning to say, you know, having out outsized influence in the country they don't want A group or Iran's influence in Beirut. And as you said, the economy that the, um the currency has been in freefall on all of that, while You know, they would have been also fighting covert 19 like the rest of the world, the matter fact. Before this explosion, Beirut was about to go into a full lock down for a few days. So all of that now complicated by this on really will likely We could really create more instability there. I think it's worth noting as well that this, you know In the United States. We think of Lebanon we think of Beirut specifically is it's a place that's constantly under some sort of, you know, fighting that's been going on and from their civil war all the way through 1990 through the terrorist attacks their wars with Israel. There has never been an explosion. This large That's right. You think about you know if the Lebanese and the people of Beirut are shocked by this explosion, I mean, we saw pictures of it and it devastated and that it devastated your eyes. But these are people who've been through AA lot right. They've had 11 on bomb during their boards with Israel. You know, they've had assassination attempt They've had shooting through the streets. You know, even just recently, some of the protests there were quite violent. You know, but this just is nothing they have ever experienced on DH. It feels like the city you know till the day it feels like the day after a new atomic bomb went off there and people are are. It's going to take awhile. A real trauma. Get over there, Giordano.
