"For decades here. But I totally, I was drawn in by the punt God. I couldn't speak against the punt God during draft season. And I regretted it. And now all these months later, I'm coming clean. That I'm a Jordan stout guy. Your courage will, or lack thereof. We'll go down in podcast history. It will. Oh my goodness, at my funeral, they'll be talking about the fact that I didn't defend Jordan stout during the last season. Oh, I'm not looking forward to that. But. My funeral. What's your best case scenario for the ravens here? Super Bowl. It's got to be 13 wins. It's the Super Bowl, it's. I would just, I would devour a Raven Super Bowl run. Like so many pieces of, I don't know what I'm really into these days. Banana cream pie maybe? I was at jets practice yesterday. That's such a funny thing to eat. Well, I was gonna say like chocolate cake or something. I don't know, but I'm off I'm back off well I'm trying to back off the sweets again. I let sugar back into my life and now I'm trying to undo that that mistake, but the jets practice yesterday training camp and they just walked out like a full banana cream pie. And it looked incredible, but I just had to walk away. I said to walk away. Oh man, before we wrap this show up, Connor. I should have done this during the segment, but I just sort of set it aside 'cause I thought it would be a fun or not fun. Sort of trivia question to wrap this up with, do you know what a group of tigers is called? Oh. It's like a pride of lions, a school if it would. But a group of tigers. Isn't it? No. Is it like a fleet? You're close. Floss. It's a streak. A streak. A streak of tigers. Do you know what a pack of ferrets is called? A pack? A business. Yeah. I think so, right? It's really good. Yeah. I'll go with that. No one's gonna fact check us. What it's late enough in the show. But my least favorite part of my life. In this industry or perhaps in general, is when we put together a magazine story because I was your editor on the Joe burrow story, you have to, for the magazine version, write those little photo captions and all of them get like snappy headlines and our colleague Mark bechdel kind of jokes that he has a streak of like a thousand executive issues in which he's worked triple threat into one of those snatching lines, but I use there's a picture of Joe burrow leading a Bengals huddle and I used winning streak and then the caption was like, you know, the Bengals won 6 or the last 7 games. And I got multiple notes saying like, that's not a winning streak. 6 out of 7 games. I was like, no, it's a winning streak. That's it. That's my life. Streak of tigers. What comes up with this dub ship, by the way? Like who gets to decide?

"Little bit on the quarterbacks, big array feel and Jim Garoppolo is still out there and maybe a little bit of tyrann Mathieu at the end of the show, but here we go. You are, gosh, I don't know how this happened to you. And I feel a little bit bad, but I feel like you also do a good job with it, but you are a draft grade sky. At the MMT. And you wrote draft grades for all 32 teams. We put them out on Saturday, but I do want to run through some of the classes that you that you really liked and why at this point. And I guess we'll start up top. You gave out two a pluses, and we'll start with the Baltimore Ravens. Yeah, I mean, I just, I don't see a cogent argument anywhere from anyone else on why this isn't far and away the number one draft class. A granted Baltimore's team specific, right? There are already a good team. So they're already a good team that got maybe the best safety prospect that's come out in 5 years. The best center prospect that's come out in God, I have no idea. A long time. And then to get David ajabo, who's gonna, at some point, contribute, right? And was a borderline top 15 pick in the second round. Travis Jones, who we talked about as a first round pick real beastly sort of space eating tackle and then our guy Daniel fought a Lele from Minnesota who I don't think would work anywhere else, but think about him as like a 6th tackle or a 6th offensive lineman and that Raven's offense and moving him around. He's gonna destroy people like this was it was just a phenomenal job and you know, I get it that we overweight classes where it's like this team took 6 people I heard of, you know and but you know I really think they did a nice job. So I'm gonna bring up two things with this draft class and sadly I agree with you on everything here. But the eagles jumped ahead of them to get Jordan Davis. Yeah. And then all of a sudden down and pick 76, the ravens get Travis Jones anyway and Jones is not Jordan Davis, but he has a Yukon pedigree and that means something at NFL. And he's gonna be he's gonna be a fine player here. So it's almost like if you went to the ravens that said, well, you can have Jordan Davis and whatever safety number 7 off the board or whatever it would be, or you can have Kyle Hamilton and Travis Jones, I think you quite obviously take the ladder. Yeah, I think the win there is in the aggregate, right? And again, again, nobody is saying that any of the Georgia guys are worse than the Yukon player. But what I am saying is that there's an element of the unknown in Georgia because we have yet to pluck all these players apart, right? We have yet to pull them all apart and play them in a defense that isn't run by Kirby smart who I would guess if you put him in the NFL would be one of the three or four best defensive coordinators in the NFL. Do you think that's fair to say? Yeah, I'll go with that. So because it reminds me of, was it the Clemson defense that got way overdrafted that year? The Cleveland Farrell year. Yeah, it was kind of a couple of years. The Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd before that, they've had a lot of sort of high pedigree guys, not quite work out the next level. Yeah, and you know, I think it's not because of any one particular reason, right? But it's like, you know, I think their strength was in the fact that they were kind of all together, right? And what was it, right? It was the year the Cleveland Farrell year was Cleveland Farrell, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, back to all in the top 20. And so it's like, okay, you know, maybe that's the same kind of deal with the with Georgia, where you don't know whereas Travis Jones. I mean, you know, you're playing Purdue and it's like the fourth quarter and you're the only guy, you know? And everyone knows it. And you're getting doubled and tripled and it probably really is an unpleasant experience. And you know, they just, I thought he played really well, things considered. My burner account is saying that the Yukon guy is better than the Georgia guys, but it's probably about it. I'm just gonna throw one thing out there about this draft class because obviously we want to talk about the specialists. My secret take that I never spoke aloud and I'm a coward and I will take your barbs and insults here. But Jordan stout was by far the best punter in the draft to me. But everyone was so into Matt eraser, the punt God that I got. And look, his nickname's the punt God, you can't really argue with that, but I kind of shrugged my shoulders and was just like, oh, I don't know, I guess I'm wrong on it. I thought stout was the better directional punter. I thought he was, he did it in the elements as opposed to the thin air out in Colorado and the mountain west, but yeah, Jordan stout first punter off the board. Those are the ravens, great pickup there for the ravens. I do agree that there is a there is some sort of inherent value on identifying specialists via the draft and developing them. Because there is that not premium, but it's an annoyance, right? Whereas a lot of teams just go buy that old axiom where you take like 9 of them to camp with you and then screw it. You know, one of them has got to work and then you cut the rest of them. But I do think there is an inherent value in not having to battle with or overpay for kickers. I mean, that really changed a lot of things during COVID, right? Where a lot of teams weren't doing that anymore. And so they had to look into the college market a little bit. But yeah, no, you're right. I mean, and if John Harbaugh drafts a punter, I'm assuming he's a really, really good punter. And just one more note on the back end of that class. Isaiah likely, who I know that we were like, meh on hot and cold on, but as like the Raven's third tight end, hell yeah. Give me that any day of the week. And they're going to line up, they're going to two and three tight end you to death. And I just love it. I love it when a team just full heartedly warmly embraces who they are. And this draft is just such a Raven strath. And I think that's why I liked it so much. Let's go on to the eagles, the other a plus team here, and AJ browns, the headliner, but lots of good stuff besides AJ Brown. Yeah, so can I, so I don't know where the best place to do this is, but I wrote a column praising Howie roseman and it had occurred to me like a couple hours after the draft that I guess I owe the readers an apology or I have sort of like misrepresented myself, which is an interesting thing to do. So do you remember when the eagles so I said Howie Rosen was the executive of this draft. He destroyed it. I don't think there's any other way around that. I think he has been manipulating the drafts, the early round draft capital better than anybody except for maybe the ravens. Over the last like two or three years. But I was so intensely critical of him for tanking that game against the Washington commander's team. Remember that? Yep. And I don't think a lot of what happened is possible without moving up as far as you did. And I did not even think about that as a footnote in the column praising Howie roseman until afterwards, and I don't know if you could throw that back in. I went back into the column to add a good risk reference, but I did not think of I did not think of that..

"I still would be, would they took Jake Bailey in the 5th, right? They have the last pick in the fourth round, one 37 overall. If they're going to go punter, I think that's the pick. Yeah, it's basically 37 overall. Right. I could totally see today being like running back one 21. Offensive or defensive lineman one 27 punter one 37. I could totally see that. Don't sleep on Jordan stout. That's all I'll say. Obviously I'm a big matter is a guy. If he's on the board, great, I wouldn't be surprised if they take stout. The other thing I would say is keep an eye out for coverage players. Keep an eye out for coverage players today. There's been a bit of an accident there. It started with Nate Abner a couple years ago. They're now lost brain golden Brandon king. Matthew slater is here to hear at this point, right? Some of the guys that are like there. And this is now we're getting into the 6th and 7th round picks they have. Drew Hart law from Penn State ran a 4.24 40. Teams love him as a gunner. John patrician from Pitt is a hybrid linebacker safety who the dude just gets the football. He gets a football he's fearless in contact. I like him later on. There's one other guy I would say to watch later on in terms of special teams and I don't know how realistic he is now that they took Marcus Jones, but Dallas flowers for Pittsburgh state in Kansas. Is a really interesting thing in Kansas. Pick no H, there's no H at the end. Pittsburgh state. D two school in Kansas. I think that he's so he was an all American kick returner in the NIA. He then transferred to Pittsburgh state last year. He led the nation as a kick returner. He's bigger. He's an outside coronary 6 two one 91 long arms. Again, great athlete. I think he reminds me of gunner in that. I think he would come in. He'd give you a kick returner right away, but unlike gunner, I think there is some upside for him to contribute it as listed position down the road two or.

"They liked him last year. I think this was kind of their plan B if Mac Jones didn't pan out, Davis mills. I think he's more athletic than Davis mills. He can move around a little bit. Maybe, but they both have similar level of arm talent. They both have really good arms. They both had injuries, but there are also flashes on the tape of really good tape when they were healthy and when they were going right in college. So I kind of see a little from what I had heard Davis mills was kind of their plan B quarterback, right? It Mac didn't fall to them. I just think cars are as strong as a little more gunslinger in them. Yeah. I think I could see really got that grip it and rip it kind of style. So yeah. Interesting developmental quarterback candidate. I hate watching him in the preseason. So that's quarterbacks. And I know people are going to assume hell was supposed to be first round pick. I'm good on the same house. I'm fine on the same house. And then later on, there's Caleb Ella B there's EJ Perry. I kind of like EJ Perry for them, honestly, if they're going if they're going to go later. Later, like 6 or 7 rounds. Yeah. The reason why I like EJ Perry is because I feel like he has that ability to mimic a lot of the quarterbacks that they're going to face on scout team. I'm not talking about him as a backup quarterback obviously. He's off the charts and he's actually got that size and look, I remember being in that locker room after the Patriots won the Super Bowl against the rams in 2018, 2019. And how many of those guys on defense credited Brian Hoyer with getting them ready to face mcvay's offense in the face Jared Goff. That was like the number one thing that came out of a lot of those guys mouth. So the scout team quarterback thing is not a complete nothing, right? It's not a complete nothing. And I do think that there's an element to it with EJ Perry that he's got similar size and similar athleticism to a guy like Josh Allen. He's obviously not Josh Allen. But he's the closest thing that you're gonna get on terms of scout team quarterbacks to somebody like Josh Allen. So I think that that's an interesting one too, if they want to take that view of, okay, he's going to be a long-term backup slash he's going to be an athletic guy that we can put on scout team to mimic some of these athletic cubies we're going to face. Yeah, no. So I was more so focusing on that trend that they generally take their backup quarterbacks high. But yeah, if they go later, EJ Perry. The punters. The punch. Matter is should be off the board by one 21. Yes. I mean, we've talked about this in the last couple of days. I think they're going to have Jordan stout.

"So I'm coming around to the idea that they might draft the punter, but we already went Penn State once in this box. So I don't think we can do it twice. And I think we took Jordan stout last week, didn't we? I don't think so we took EJ Perry. We took a call. Stout that's so them to not taste like you're right. They're gonna like stout better as much as I hate to admit it. Yeah, so I love Tyler Beatty. I think that that's a great pick and one thing that they do really like and we've already taken two guys at the top and even if you want to talk about Zion McCollum in terms of college production at that level, they love guys that produce in college. Like they love big time producers like that. They always cite that. Whenever they draft somebody that had great stats in college, they always talk about it. That 1900 yards and 18 touchdowns from Tyler Beatty last year is a monster number. That's a productive back. I love Tyler Beatty. I'm all for trading up to try to grab Tyler Beatty here. All right, so I wanted the last pick in the fourth round because they hate picking in the 5th round, so just pretend I stopped it in time, but it's fine. So we're gonna get how do they have that? That's not Gilmore. How do they have that 7th round pick? Oh, 'cause they got that from the Patriots sent that to Miami for I say a Ford and then Carolina trades some guard to Miami and that's how they got it. So let's make this trade. Yeah. People in the chat are bringing up an interesting point Alex we could try to trade Nikhil Harry for a pick. So let's get to like two 21 'cause we're not getting a top 200 pick farm. No. So let's get to two ten and see what the board looks like. But I was thinking that. But we agree Tyler Beatty here. It's a little high, but I think he's the kind of guy that would take high. And all of that. I don't think you dial our babies just a passing downs back either. Like I think he can do it all..

"So I've said this before, I think all things considered the talent, the skill set, the position, the positional value, the way the position stacked, the other players of the position throughout the draft. Pound for pound, I think, quay walker is the best pick they could make in the draft if they can get him at 50. He's a good player. And I don't know that they can. For the other linebackers in the class. For what they need at linebacker. What do you bring to the table? All of that. He would be great. I love these first three picks, really. I do. I'm trying to tell if they add any future assets here. I can't put all moving around. He'll walk or bath as your defense is better. Those are three day one starters. I like Jalen amore Davis too as a potential upside corner on the outside and then we've talked about this. What much rather amor Davis and cordell flood? What much great, bigger green? And then a little fancy at the end, a little styling at the end with Connor Hayward and Jordan stout. It's a good polls, but players that the Patriots would like, this person has some research. This was well done. Did their homework? Yeah, this is a good one. I agree. Jalen armor Davis, long athletic head kind of a bumpy road at Alabama, but somebody wants season. Yeah, but somebody that I think is really, really high upside. The one thing that I would say about this draft and macro mentioned the age of the draft prospects, a lot of older guys, because of COVID, because it's just a wonky three or four year run for a lot of these dudes, like a lot of guys don't haven't played a lot of football, a lot of guys are older. It's just a weird, everybody's got something, right? Like everybody's either 25 year old rookie, Andrew bridge junior's only played 15 games in college, like there's always a little bit of something like that with a lot of these guys. In this class. It just seems like everybody's got just something going on with how many years they played or whatever. Jaylen on more Davis is another one of those guys I really like him. All right, one more, oh, well we got, okay, Jermaine Johnson's not making it there. I just don't think he's making it to 21. We talked about Danny gray. Tariq and Troy Andrews this is a good mock if it happens. I don't think it happens. I think it's a great mock of it happens. Here's the one I wanted to pull up a tire elam. Troy Anderson. Finally, somebody knows where to take.

"So yeah, I don't know that he ever plays a down for them in the NFL and you don't always love that when you're making a draft pick, but I think he's somebody who could ultimately make the team better. It's in a bit of a roundabout way. But just because we don't see the work being put in, doesn't mean the player's not putting in the work. It doesn't mean the player's not contributing. So behind the scenes pick, but we know enough. We know by now, well enough, how much they value those kind of guys. So whether it's EJ Perry, I can see Jordan stout there, a punt or something like that, but yeah, EJ Perry, they're going to draft him the casual fans aren't going to understand it. They're going to bitch about it. It makes a ton of sense and it's especially at one 53. I think I was like the 8th to last pick. Two 53, where I say 8 53, two 53. Yeah, so I think the biggest thing with DJ Perry, too, and I know this is nothing to do with his football ability necessarily. I just think that Robert Kraft in particular would love having an Ivy League guy on the team. It just is something that that kind of brain and the intelligence that it brings to it. Especially for a backup quarterback, somebody that's going to be really in there just for the mental side of it more or less like Brian Hoyer. I can't remember who it was, but they had somebody else that was an Ivy League guy. They always love to point out that he was an ivy leaguer. Who was that? Yeah. I want to look it up. Keep going. Yeah. So I don't know. It's just a little thing. It's obviously nothing to do with football, but I just think it's interesting. So yeah, there you have it. Oh, that's right. Brandon Copeland. Yeah, Brandon Copeland was like a really smart dude. Yeah, it was a pen, I think. Yeah, where did James Devlin go to school?.

"I'm really, I'm very high on all three of those receivers. And I think those guys can bow melt in villas Jones, Danny gray can all contribute to the Patriots. I think Danny gray has a real potential to be a starting wide receiver. I think villa's Jones and Bo Melton are more Isaiah McKenzie's, right? Gadget players return guys. Things like that. But I think a guy like Danny gray could be a complete receiver for them. I don't know, I just, I think we got lucky that the fact that guys are still here. So if we are picking here, I think it's V list Jones. Well, I think it's we've picked him like ten times. So yeah. I think we can pick villa's Jones here. Like I said, I would sleep on Danny grey. I think he's got potential, but feels Jones here makes a lot of sense too. So here's what we're going to do. We're going to take velas junks here. We're both going to get what we want. We're going to take V list Jones there. For what it's worth. Okay, Bo Melton went, we wouldn't have gotten them. We're moved down from here though. We're going to find a team that has two picks. We're going to trade with the rams. I think you agree. Is that mister relevant? I think you just are making the making this trade back so you can take matter rise somewhere. Off the board. At this point, he falls under the simulator fucked up rule. Okay. At this point, at this point, we can't take him. We didn't take him one 70. We're not taking him. I'm going to move back 8 spots because I want to make at least 8 picks because that's what the Patriots do. We're trying to emulate what they do. Who did we pass on? Christopher Allen's really the one player in that list. I guess Josh Thompson that kind of stands out. But now we have a 7th round or two. Right. So now we have a 6 and a 7. So I guess here, we're kind of looking at BPA, right? Again, a rise of falls under that he's not going to be here. He's not falling to it now. If you want to talk about taking Jordan stout here,.

"Obviously the quarterback. He's off to a really good start this year But he still will turn it over and can be interesting to see how he does know. Kane is back as the the main running back. He was hurt last year. The key guy on offense as john dodson the wide receiver. He's might you know. He got from ohio state. Probably you know maybe the two top wide receivers in the big ten this year dotson does all to even returns kicks. And he's just super smooth player Just knows how to how to play the game in really good route runner on paper washington. Another gotta watch on the wide receiver. they've been new c They one year with a kirk sorocca. Who is at minnesota under. Pj slack and went to penn state. Didn't work real well and make your age is now at some penn state and it seems like they tweak things a little bit but it's kind of the same offense you know but it's still a little different on defense John brisker is the safety. Who's probably the best player. Joy porter's kid is joint porter from the. Nfl is his son is aligned background team. He's really good player so and jordan. Stout handles this is kind of unique. He's both are placekicker and punter. And he's pretty good Averages forty eight yards of punt Pretty good place kicker. But it better punter. I think than place kicker So this is just a huge game. You look at penn state. What they've done this year. They went up to manson and one on now wisconsin laid. I thought played better in that. Game than Penn state but they just struggle to put the ball in the end zone penn. State's defense came up with some big plays and then mom. The auburn game was a really competitive game. Know i think auburn kind of screwed the pooch a little bit too It's you know they've they want some solid games Kinda like iowa in some ways where they won the significant games that they've had to play on one one on the road in a home game so this is just. I'll say this if i will get this one. Whether schedule sets up really well penn state still has to play michigan state michigan ohio state. I mean they still got still got some things ahead of them. they got go columbus. I think the but that big east is a whole lot. Auto beaten up on each other Here in the month of october another in our last week and our tober. I think it's michigan state in michigan. And then penn state at ohio state so We'll talk about some of games this week. But that's a that's a you know an iowa schedule they to produce next week. That's two thirty game on. Abc right so yes on abc All week off time to get rested up. Then they've got you know. Wisconsin northwestern backed back on.
