A highlight from 41: 2023 Predictions!

"Welcome to the Ultra Flex Football Podcast where we have fun with our friends while we talk about football and any anything else we wanna talk about. We're here for season two. I don't know if we're officially calling it season two but this is our second season of talking about NFL football. So, we're back. With me as always is Rob Green. What's up? And Ryan Wheeler. Howdy, howdy. Season two episode one is what it's officially gonna be titled and Tony, I told you not to talk so close to the mic, man. You like, blew out my eardrums there at the beginning but I just get excited. I know. You're so excited. You get excited so easily. We were talking about that before we like, actually started recording but anywho, uh so, we do that thing where we have an album and we split up the songs in the album and we try to get the song titles into the show as discreetly as possible. Sometimes not as discreet as we'd like to think we are but we're gonna give you our titles that way you know what to listen for. See how many you can catch. Just a little game within our show. My song titles, the album first of all is called Down to Earth by Jimmy Buffet. Rest in peace, Jimmy Buffet. It's his first album. Down to Earth. The songs that I have to get in are The Christian, LSD, The Missionary, and A Mile High in Denver. Rob, what do you got? Alright, I have the captain and the kid, Captain America, Ain't He a Genius, and Turnabout. Alright, and Sir Anthony. I've got There's Nothing Soft about Hard Times, I Can't Be Your Hero Today, and Truck Stop Salvation. So, we'll see if we can get all of those in. Uh most of the episode today is gonna be football. It's uh we we were doing some things during the off season to help pass time. Uh you know, Ultra Flex After Dark and having some fun with games and things like that but football season is here. Uh we're gonna be doing football talk here in a second where we're gonna pick our division of winners. We're gonna pick our Super Bowl, MVP, and then we're gonna pick week one games and then we'll have one game at the end. So, uh football, football, football. So, let's get it started with football talk. Just that really amps you up, doesn't it? Golly, that was good. It puts me in the football mood. It just, it feels like we're kind of, you know, whimsical, a little bit of uh goofy when we talk. So, I thought that was a good one for football, our football talk. Let's, let's start with, in my opinion, the less competitive conference which would be the NFC. Uh maybe you guys think differently. Um but let's go with NFC West. We'll skim over this if we all agree pretty quickly. Uh I'll go first. This one and then we'll just kinda alternate uh as we jump divisions but uh for me, the NFC West is the 49ers winning this division. Um I think they're the best team in the NFC. Any chance we can like we go NFC West that includes the that way for people that don't necessarily have the NFC West on the top of their head you're just gonna see that includes like the 49ers, Seahawks, Cardinals, uh Rams. Yeah, you just you just did it. Yeah, we can do it. Okay. Nailed it. Yeah. So, 49ers, Seahawks, uh Cardinals, Rams. For me, Cardinals, Rams are both gonna be pretty not so great. Comes out of the Seahawks and 49ers and I just think the 49ers are a better roster. Brian? Oh, it's next. Um I'm gonna go with the 49ers. I just think top to bottom, the roster is the best. Rob? Yeah, I agree but I wanna be different. So, give me the Seahawks. We hated on him last year. We picked him to be like what? One and sixteen I think cuz we thought they were terrible. Gino Smith's gonna continue his uh career turnaround, turn about. I don't know if I can use that here. And uh. And he's gonna lead them to a division title. Alright. They have the offensive weapons to do it though. They definitely have the offensive weapons. Maybe Brock Purdy isn't as good as he looked at the end of last year. We'll see. He doesn't have to be. They have Sam Darnold as the backup. I don't think that's why he doesn't have to be good but anyway. Yeah. I think he has enough weapons and Kyle Shanahan around him that will make him. Exactly it. Make him look good. Uh Ryan, I'll let you go first this time. We're talking about the NFC North. So, we got the Lions, the Packers, the Bears, and the Vikings. Who do you have winning that? The NFC North, I have the Packers taking that division. It kinda just feels like a crapshoot division honestly. I mean, I don't really feel good about my pick. I don't feel about picking any, good about picking any of those teams. So, I just want Jordan Love to be good because he's got an awesome name and quite honestly, that's that's how I came up with my answer. So, I was like, got the guy that has love in his name. I'm pretty sure from looking at this division, the odds are the closest bunch of four out of all the the division. Makes sense. So, it kind of is the most wide open division, I think. Who do you have? Yeah, who do you have picking, Rob? You know, our team last year was the Lions. So, I'm gonna I'm gonna bring that over to this year. Let's go with the Lions too. I don't even know the last time they won the division. Nineties probably. Early 90s, mid 90s. If they did then. I just don't know either. I think we'll find out pretty early AKA we're filming this on a Monday before the season starts. So, we'll find out in 3 days whether or not they'll be a pretty good team again which they have enough talent on the offense to put up points. It'll just. Yeah, what are we thinking like 60 points in that first game here with the Lions and Chiefs? It's gonna be a high score game. Probably, yeah. Yeah, no Chris Jones for the Chiefs and then the Lions don't really have much of anybody on defense. Um that means that yeah, they did what they took that linebacker. I can't think of his name right now. Um. The guy that everybody won the bills. Jack Campbell. Jack Campbell. Yeah. Yeah. Um but I agree. I have power on offense to be the best team in that division but I wouldn't would I be shocked if the Vikings or the Packers or even the Bears for that matter were to win it. Probably not. So, I'll go with the Lions. Uh the NFC East another compelling division. Got three and a half maybe. I don't know about Washington. Good teams. Um which the Cowboys, the Eagles, uh the commanders, and the Giants. Rob, who do you have winning the NFC East? Yeah, I like the Eagles. I think they're the best team in the NFC and I think they showed that last year. I think they'll do that again this year. Jalen Hurts continues his uh breakout. I won't say an MVP season but he could have another MVP caliber season like he did last year. Yeah, mine's gonna be the Eagles as well. I think their roster. While the Cowboys and Giants are gonna probably both win nine, ten games. I think the Eagles are just good enough to win eleven or twelve games and and win that division. So, Ryan, what about you? Yeah, I'm gonna be different and go uh Cowboys um not because I wanna be different but because I actually think the Cowboys are I think they have a better defense and I think their offense maybe not as good but I think they have a good offense and uh quite honestly, both these teams have pretty cake schedules. Um the Rob and I were talking about it earlier. Um sorry, we left you out of this conversation, Tony but the uh the Cowboys or I'm sorry, the the Eagles first was like seven games are the Patriots, Vikings, Buccaneers, Commanders, Rams, Jets, Dolphins, and then commanders again. It's like it's not that difficult. It could be six and one, seven and all. Yeah. And then the Cowboys was very similar. Like last year. So, it kinda feels like whoever wins this division is probably gonna win it with twelve. Twelve wins. Somewhere around there. Eleven, twelve. So, I just, I'm just gonna go Cowboys on that. That's gonna be a lot of my points in the AFC uh which we'll talk about in a second uh which is how hard all of their schedules are but uh last division um the NFC side is the NFC South. Could be the worst division in football. Uh we got the Saints, the Bucks, the Falcons, and the Panthers.

Ryan Wheeler Rob Green Sam Darnold Kyle Shanahan Jack Campbell Chris Jones Brian Jalen Hurts Ryan Jordan Love Down To Earth Jimmy Buffet 60 Points Brock Purdy Twelve Last Year Eleven Nine Panthers Rams

Welcome to the MMQB podcast. I am Matt Verteram, joined by Gilberto Manzano here. It is Thursday, August 24th, and that means we only have one week of preseason football up. We're all thankful for that. Gil, have you finished up your training camp tour? Are you done now, or you still got a few more you gotta hit? Yeah, no, I'm done, and when you said the date, Matt, I actually forgot what date it is today, so that tells me we're two weeks away from the real football season, so I am done with training camp. I don't know about you, Matt, but after like the fifth or sixth stop, I was over it. I saw enough, you know, kind of somewhat real football. I did check out a couple scrimmages, which felt like a little bit of real football, but before that I was like, I'm over the traveling. Let's just get to the Chiefs and the Lions for that. There's a night opener. Yeah, man, I went to eight camps. I saw nine teams because the Lions and the Giants had joined practice when I was up in Allen Park. The day that I woke up in Kansas City, I actually didn't know what city I was in when I woke up. I had like a two -second, I don't know if panic's the same. So, I'm done. I finished on Tuesday. I went up to Green Bay for the last one, which was kind of more of an add -on at the end. I had gone up there for OTAs to do a feature on Jordan Love, and I wanted to go back up there and visit with Matt Lafleur, and it was worth the six -hour round trip. It was a long, long bit of traveling one day, but we made it happen. How many camps did you get to over the course of the summer? I got to, I want to say eight, and I had like you with the extra one with the Saints. The Saints came to Southern California for joint scrimmage with the Chargers, so technically nine teams, but the way I think I did it was, I think it was five states. I drove to Las Vegas and Arizona, and then I flew to San Jose, Seattle, and Denver, and going from Seattle to Denver, that's the one I felt. But yeah, man, I primarily got the West Coast teams. I got, you know, eight teams. The ones that were easy was the ones in my backyard in LA, the Cowboys, the Chargers, and the Rams, but you know, after the, I got on the plane. You know, at one point I started thinking, I don't know how you did it, Matt, because you were driving everything. Me driving to Las Vegas and Arizona, that was too much. I couldn't do any more car rides after that. Yeah, I didn't fly for any of them. I'm based outside of Chicago. You're based in Los Angeles, so you, your teams are more sprawling for you. I mean, you're not driving to Seattle from LA. For me, the longest drive I had was Kansas City, which was like six and a half hours each way. So I did, I did make that happen. But luckily, like Chicago to Indy's not bad. Indy to Cincinnati's a couple hours. You know, it wasn't, wasn't too bad. Look, we're going to get into Trey Lance. We're going to get into, there was an injury at Broncos camp earlier today before us recording with Jerry Jeudy, with what appears to be a hamstring injury. We'll talk about that a little bit. But I, I want to ask you, so the eight teams you saw, or the eight practices you was the most impressive? And was there a team that stood out to you, either good or bad, that you were kind of surprised by? Yeah, it's a tough question, man, because I was thinking that because I got, I got a good balance of really bad teams from Arizona. I saw our guy, Connor Orr, had him at one and 16 for the, for his win -loss record, a story that came out today. So they, they, they looked like they're going to be really bad. And it was tough for me to figure out who's who on that roster. So I got that. And then I got all the really good teams, like the 49ers, you know, I'm high on the Seahawks, you know, that from our doing our, our midsummer prediction, by the way, that was tough. We had to pick our Super Bowl teams in what, like April or May we're going to do it again. And I'm so happy about that, but the Seahawks look good. I like the Cowboys a lot, but every year it's the same thing. Like they get far and they don't get past the second round. So I can't commit to them. Same thing with the Chargers. They just don't go far. Like they're really hyped to have a lot of good players. So I keep going back to the 49ers because they've shown to me to at least get to the Super Bowl, or at least make it to the NFC title game. And then Brock Purdie being healthy. That to me was all I needed to see to say, you know what? I like the Seahawks, but I'm going to leave that bandwagon and go to the 49ers. Do you believe in Purdie? I mean, look, obviously you believe in him enough that you're, you're, you're high in the Niners, but you know, they'll roll with Purdie, which we knew they would, if he was healthy. Lance is the third string guy. And I know you wrote a piece on trail, Lance, we can get to him in a little bit here. The roster's stacked. I don't think anybody questions that. I mean, they have all pros literally in almost every single meeting room. They, they, they have guys everywhere. They have a very good head coach in Kyle Shanahan, but they've been a team that they haven't found their quarterback or at least they haven't proven to have found their quarterback yet. They went to Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo, of course, now with the Raiders, who you saw as well during your tour.

"Celebrate that. Getting a lab. Okay. Yeah. I believe by grinding. After the grind, you mean? Excuse me, while I go back to the grind. Rise and grind. Were you wake up? That's where you wake up and begin rising grind. Even that stretch is too long, then you gotta get right to grind. You're not grinding soon enough. Okay. Oh, good morning. Let's grind. Yeah. Marvin, I'm sleep. I've been grinding all my life. 24/7. Sacrifice. Hustle pay the price? Nobody grinds. Like I grind. Stat of the day brought to you by panini America, the official trading card to the Dan Patrick show, yes, Paul. I hate to bring it out. But you notice on social media, there's people that wake up and it's 6 15 in the morning they post just finish my second workout attacking the day who's with me. What do you want to do to those people? Do you want to pat them on the back and respect them or do you want to like, throw them down a flight of stairs? It's why I'm not on social media. Dan, there's a handful of people who are like, full of energy at 5 45 a.m.. It's still goes back to the guy who compliments his wife or his wife who compliments her husband and he's my ray of sunshine. Wind under my wings and just say it to each other. That's all. Just say it to each other. My rock, you can't surround your rock with all this love. The greatest thing that's ever happened to me? Like my kids will text each other and I'll go just call. Wait, why? I know. What do you mean? Calm. I know. There's only a couple of reasons when you call someone and they're never good. Yes, and then when I call my kids, they never answer. If I text them, they answer right away and I go, why didn't you answer? Oh, I was busy. Not too busy. You just text me. Yes, time. Because most people don't want to have a conversation anymore. They want to get their point across and share whatever pictures and words they want to say, they're not interested in return from what's going on in your life. And that's why I just send you guys emojis. Just a thumbs up and a smiley face. No matter what the question is or comment is, it's just a thumbs up. Yes, well. Do you guys get nervous when you get a phone call from someone? I'm at the point now. My kids. I got a phone call about a week ago from a grade school friend. I keep in touch with, but like every 5 years. Oh no, someone's dead. And while I'm waiting to hit answer on the comic, oh no, one of our Friends is dead. It was a nice call and it was nothing bad at all. That scares me. We had Robert Orion, he big shot bomb when 7 titles, and I was wondering, he works covering the Lakers. And I was wondering, what is the comp. And we brought up Charles Haley because he won what 5 or 6 super bowls with cowboys in the niners, but he was a great player. I mean, in Robert said, look, he thinks he's a Hall of Famer. He's not going to get in. But we just brought up Julian Edelman. Julian Edelman was never a Pro Bowl wide receiver, but you can't write the history of the NFL without Julian Edelman. Robert in Boca on that topic. Hi, Robert. Hey, good morning. Thanks for taking my call. Real quick. I'm also a longtime member of the dead dad's club. Dan, my dad was in the same plane crash as Wendell ladner. Yeah, the former ABA player with the Kentucky colonels. And others. And that's Julius was the only Julius was the only member of the team to go to his funeral. Anyway, a comp for Robert Ori in hockey would be Ken morrow. Who went from the 1980 gold medal team in Lake placid to write to the island for the first of their four Stanley cups. Yeah. And you know what's strange? The first professional hockey game I ever saw was rangers islanders at the garden. And the islanders were kickstarting their dynasty then. I'm right behind Billy Smith was the gold center. Very famous. And I'm watching. And I'm with a guy who's from New York. He goes, just letting you know not all hockey games are like this because I'm going, this is awesome. And it was an unbelievable game and Ken morrow, of course, was one of the stars. But he was never one of the great players on that islander team because they had so many great players there. I mean, that was, that was almost like, well, you had the islanders, then you had Edmonton, I think. It was the order. And just how great those two franchises were with incredible Hall of Famer. Is that Dennis potvin in those guys? He seemed to be very famous. Number 5, I believe. Mike bossy was on that. Padlock fontaine was on that team. Which is a better seat up against a glass behind the goalkeeper or on the sides. I didn't have a choice, but I just know that this it was unbelievable atmosphere. And the fact that the islanders won at the garden. Yes, march. Is John C Reilly a good comparison to Robert Dory as far as an actor? Banana won anything. He's a great actor. I don't think she's been a part of great films. John C Reilly was in it and you know he's just snap your finger. Yes. Someone on Twitter just had another come for Robert Rory, the band foreigner. Oh, wow. Cold as ice. I know. Who had more hits? Robert ore or foreigner. No one's doing that polling. Nobody's doing that pull today. I'm going to say big shot bob. If Sheryl Crow's in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame foreigner should be in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Then I said it. Are we sure they're not? They're not. I don't know why I went up there. They're not. What the heck was that? Tyson in Colorado. Hey ty, what's on your mind? Hey, Dan, just finished my morning post about this show being my ray of sunshine every day. Thank you. I want to be your rock, Tyson. I want to be your rock. My comp for Robert Ori is Adam Vinatieri. They kind of both get called on for one specific thing. And they neither of them ever seem to miss. That's pretty good. Thank you, Tyson. And I'm glad that I'm your rock. I'm the wind under your wings. Yes, yes. Well, Adam Vinatieri's Hall of Famer though. Like he's special, he's specialized, but he was in more often. Because he was there for the entire game as far as kicking, field goals, extra points, kick-offs. And then he'd bring him in to close. Yes, Marv, did you have a thought there? As a matter of fact, I did, Dan. Oh, okay. Is anybody going to write a nice long post to their wives via social media? Oh, this weekend? Yeah, Mother's Day? No, no, no. I'm going to tell my wife. I'm going to do something that is completely different than most people. I'm just going to tell her I love her. Oh, I thought you could say brunch. No, I got some things already. Already? Yes, I guess. All right, Saturday. I've only had those Dan's deals. I got all those. The blankets, olive oil, candles, brownies. I kept that. Boom. Yeah, but that's okay. Okay. Yeah, I said you could. Because I knew you needed help. I would just get your wife one of those t-shirts you have on. Too late. I already got it. Yeah, okay. Marvin's T-shirt, the hands, the hands, T-shirt, it's available. You can go to Dan Patrick dot com and you can have one of those shirts, but more importantly, your wife can be wearing one of those shirts. People always say, why don't you make any shirts for women? Yeah, we just did. Strategically placed by accident.

"Patrick show on Fox Sports radio. Final hour in this Thursday. How did we get to the final hour already? Because we're having fun, who has more fun than we do. Buddy. I was just talking to Tyler about meat Friday on a Thursday. He's going to go out and shop. I said, you can't get whatever you want. It's going to be great. You put it on the traeger. So Tyler will do that. Tyler standing by taking your phone calls as well. I know. How about that? It feels like that. Like the last few months, it just feels like we breeze right by and then it's Thursday, final hour. How did that happen? Then we got Friday and then it's the weekend. But hopefully you feel the same when you're listening or watching, watching on peacock download the app, you can watch for free. Coming up, we will talk to one of the 6 NFL executives who is in charge of creating the schedule. Take us behind the scenes, what's factored in here. We've heard some of the games that are already leaking out the Detroit Lions will be in Kansas City. That'll be the kick-off night on NBC. The lions are getting 7 early line. Monday night it will be the bills and the jets in New York. We know the international games. Week 5 on NBC, cowboys in the forty-niners. Black Friday, the dolphins in the jets on Amazon, week 13, niners eagles rematch Christmas Day, raiders chiefs that CBS and Nickelodeon and also the Giants and the eagles on Fox, week 17, the Bengals in the Kansas City Chiefs. What would be the worst matchup? Is there a bad matchup potential for week one? It doesn't feel like there's a bad matchup for week one. There's usually a bad matchup for like week 17. Yes. You know what? It feels weird saying these two teams and maybe I haven't thought this through much at all. But

"These kids always feel my hands. Christmas came early for us football fans with the NFL announced earlier today that the eagles will play host of the Giants on Christmas Day in a much anticipated and digital matchup four 30 Eastern Time for those asking giants fans are hoping Christmas Day goes significantly better than their eagles games last year. That include the 38 to 7 route in the divisional playoff, the Giants went zero three against the eagles last year. That was the first time in the Super Bowl era, the Giants lost three different times to the same opponent in a single season, but Lewis, it's a new year, and of course the Lions, the Giants excuse me, overachieved last season based off their talent, now they've got more pieces in place. Have they done enough though to close the gap with Philly this off season? Yeah, I think they've done enough to close the gap. I don't think they've caught them, but there's no question that Joe Shane the general manager went to work starting in free agency and then on through the draft to kind of fix up some of their holes. You know, that they had their field. Look, they knew that they needed to go ahead and add some more firepower on the perimeter in particular to help out Daniel Jones and help out with his Ascension in his transformation. So they get Paris Campbell who you saw on your screen they get Darren Waller from the Raiders who you saw on your screen as well. So those are two veteran pass catchers, then they go into draft and they draft one of the fastest guys in the draft and Jalen Hyatt who you see on your screen right there to really have a guy who can really take the top off the defense. And then the guy who you didn't see on there who may be the most important is John Michael Schmidt, the center out of Minnesota, who they park right in the middle of this offense, which is where they needed to help on the offensive line to go along with two bookend tackles Andrew Thomas has become one of the best left tackles in all of football. And then at the right side, Evan Neil gone into a second year, has to make improvements. And I believe that he will make improvements. On the defensive side look, they draft the ante banks out of Maryland, who's one of the best press cover corners in this entire draft this year. Then the guys up front, look at all the guys who they had all the first round picks they have invested on the front line. I mean, kayvon thibodeau in his second year has to take off Dexter Lawrence, you have to be better. Leonard Williams, you have to be better. So I think this team is there. They may not have caught the eagles, but they definitely made up some ground this off season. Let's talk Philly for a second Louis. I think we can all see the succession plan on defense for some of the pieces that they lost, but these young, more unproven players, like examples, Jordan Davis, and a Kobe dean from their draft class last year have a lot to prove. Are they capable do you think of stepping up and replacing the likes of javon hargrave and two linebackers and TJ Edwards and Kaiser white? Yeah, I do think they are. And for two reasons. One, they're going to be intrinsically internally motivated because of the fact that they come from programs that were accustomed to winning. So the expectations for them to play at a high level are already instilled in them. Number two, they're around each other, right? So they're going to be able to push each other and number three. Think about the veterans that they have on the defensive side of the ball in particular that they're going to learn from. You're going to be learning from guys like Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham, who are eagles for life who are two of the very best that I've ever played for that organization who are going to demand that these guys take the mantle and run with it in a way that is befitting of guys who've been drafted as high as they've been drafted and that it'll be fitting of Philadelphia eagle defensive line. And so I think they're set up for success there. The only people they'll have the blame if they don't meet expectations are themselves. Interesting stuff there. Of course, Philly seems to be transitioning to a bit of a new era right now. And that brings us to the final object of the day here on NFL live is it's time for one more thing. This is a fun one before we go. On the day that we learned the date of the next chiefs Bengals matchup, let's remind everyone with this Cincinnati mayor had to say, prior to their playoff matchup, this past January. Good afternoon, Cincinnati. I have a proclamation from the desk of the mayor. Be it proclaimed, whereas the Cincinnati Bengals are headed to burrow head stadium for their second consecutive AFC championship game. Whereas last year's game, the Bengals scored more points than the chiefs resulting in a Bengals victory and achieves loss. Whereas Joseph Lee burrow, whose three and L against mahomes has been asked by officials to take a paternity test to confirming whether or not he's his father. Okay, so of course you may recall that the chiefs went on to beat the bangles and earn a spot of Super Bowl 57 and to absolute nobody's surprise, chief start in Travis Kelce, took a shot at the mayor of Cincinnati after the game and only the way that he can. Hey, I've got some wise words for that Cincinnati mayor. Know your rolling shut your mouth. You jabroni. Jabroni, anytime you can say that on oh, it's good. All that takes us to today where the aforementioned Cincinnati mayor after that pure vault was joined by former chief and current Bengals tackle Orlando Brown junior to make the official announcement of this year's matchup. Yeah, we're ready. The Bengals play the chiefs week 17. And I've got nothing else to add. And cut. How was that? Yeah. Here goes better than the last time. Well done, bravo, sometimes short and sweet is the best way to go about your business. Full schedule released tomorrow, including one that I football game on NFL live. "To be one of the most sought after basketball players in the nation? Say hello to Billy Preston. You turn into a star down here. We want Billy, we want Billy. Until somebody had called the NCAA anonymously. The federal probe has turned up widespread fraud and corruption in college basketball. Listen to the bag game from 30 for 30 podcasts. We all got mud on us, man. All of us. Let me very quickly interrupt here. There was a change in the 14 selection. The Pittsburgh Steelers have moved up to number four two here. The patrons were back to steelers off. Let me think about Broderick Jones here. Yes. Because you're jumping ahead of the New York line. Belichick would like nothing more than to give it to the jets, right? The Pittsburgh steelers select Broderick Jones. Offensive tackle Georgia. And Charlie looks like Bill Belichick engineered sending the offensive tackle away from the jets and two the Pittsburgh Steelers. Oh man, that trader by the Steelers to 14th overall allowed them to grab offensive tackle Broderick Jones. Again, as you saw, many people thought he would have gone to the jets at pick 15 as they look to bulk up their offensive line. The jets instead took edge rusher will McDonald the fourth with the pick after Broderick Jones, head coach Robert Saleh claimed this week that McDonald's was always the plan in New York. The difference between 13 and 15 and the way the everything shook out made no difference to us. First and foremost, we're always going to take the best player available and that presents itself and you can make an argument that best available wasn't a need while it doesn't change what you do with just for the last two years everybody we've drafted seem to be in need. Bus available now doesn't necessarily mean you need it, but you never want to pass up somebody who you think can change the game for you. All right, Louis, I'm not sure anybody I know translates coach speak better than you do. You buy in this one from Robert salad? Look, I love rob, but no, I don't. Absolutely don't. And this is an offense. Look, this is an offense that last year was 31st in the NFL and run block win rate and was 21st in pass block win rate. They have a quarterback who's knocking on the door of 40 years old. Do you really think he wants to be dealing with edge pressure coming up coming at him at an alarming rate, especially concerning the fact that they're dealing with teams like the Miami Dolphins that can just send pass rushers at you and waves? Do you really think he wants to deal with that? You really think they're going to put him in harm's way. And look, I like will McDonald as much as anyone, but he is not better than any of the tackles that went off the board ahead of him, and I understand the player evaluation field as we know is subjective. We can both look at the same player and come to vastly different conclusions. But all of the tackles that were taken ahead of will McDonald are better prospects in my mind and present a greater value for them than when will McDonald does himself. So we'll see how this plays out. I just don't think they're going to like it though. Yeah, or Lou, everybody is saying exactly what they should say in this situation. You've got Robert Saul essentially saying, no, that's the guy we want it and you've got Bill Belichick saying absolutely nothing. Because that's exactly what you do, whether something is either deliberate or not, because everybody will assume that you are the mad genius in this situation. Look, in this situation, when you have Aaron Rodgers and an offensive line that needs help, you absolutely are drafting for need, not for value. Yes, I understand every coach and GM across the league will tell you always draft for need. Always drop our value, not need. In this case, you need the offensive line. You need them. You are chasing a Super Bowl. It didn't fall right for them. End of story, I understand why solids saying what he said, but ultimately they could really use that offensive lineman. You know what I love the most about all this is that bill's pettiness has no end. There's no end. He will never forget. He will never forget the jets and he won't let the judge ever forget him. And you know what? His silence speaks volumes. And I love it. I love every bit of it. That's what makes this season maybe one of the best we've had in a long time. So much drama. Rivalries often extend not just on the field, but also way off of it as well. Once again, we make the transition from Aaron Rodgers new team to his old team. That's the packers who have turned over a new leaf at quarterback, Jordan love is now leading the way, love will take over for Rogers with just one career start under his belt earlier today. He spoke to the media for the first time with the Rogers trade. You know, the whole off season the approach I'd be the starter. So that was just my mindset going into it. I couldn't really control what happened, going forward. It was out of my control, but that was kind of the approach I took to it and just went from there. Yeah, we talked after the trade. It's kind of just wish you the best going forward. He wished me the best and always there for me if I need anything if have any questions or anything, but I'm always just grateful to be around him and for the time I had with him to be able to learn and be behind him. It's very grateful for me. All right, for more, let's bring in our terrific ESPN packers reporter, rob damask and rob, you were there today as love answered questions. What else did he have to say besides what we just heard? Yeah, field, we all know that Jordan love waited three years for this. I asked him today how long that seemed. He said, well, it seemed like three years, it seemed like a while. He mentioned that the hardest part was last march, march of 2022, when Rogers signed that three year $150 million contract extension, and he said to himself, what do I do now? Where do I go from here? But in the back of his mind, he said he always believed that he would get this chance. And speaking of belief, there was a lot of talk about confidence, how much he has in himself, how much other guys have in him and running it back Aaron Jones said this. He said, we know that Jordan believes in himself number one. And you're never going to believe in someone if they don't believe in themselves. So because Jordan feels that way, it's permeated throughout the locker room and they have confidence in him. Despite the fact that he's really never played a whole lot for you. Yeah, we'll see how that confidence looks at the end of September or so, but you never know, rob, the packers have been down this road before and has certainly worked out for them pretty darn well. Great stuff, rob will talk to you again soon. I am sure. All right, so let's talk about the definition of success for Jordan love. Who is the ultimate wild card in this NFL season? How would you define a successful year for him? it up, right? They won what 8 games last year? Get them to at least that mark or a little bit better, show that you are a professional football player at the quarterback position in the National Football League. Show us that you've evolved since sitting on the bench. Show us that, hey, what the Green Bay Packers saw in practice and what little bit of gameplay that you had that you've learned from it that you've gotten better from your first year in the National Football League from Utah state. I think you'll be successful. I understand that and he can't be Aaron Rodgers off the bat. I understand all those sort of things. I think a lot of people are looking at it and saying what they got rid of Aaron Rodgers for Jordan love, who has once started under his belt in three seasons with the packers and at the end of the day, you got to give him an opportunity to be successful. Don't turn the football over. Lean heavily in the running game under your defense and get your team into the end zone. And I think he'll be fine. Yeah, I absolutely agree. And the more I kind of study this situation and think about it, the more I like it, especially for the second half key of this upcoming season. But I think no question it all starts with Jordan love himself as Aaron Jones talked about having that self belief. I think it quickly then translates to Matt Lafleur and he must

"And then you high 5s the Duff blimp guy. That was Kevin Stefanski that is solid. I mean, look, they I was just beside myself. They kicked the extra point and went to overtime so they could get their three 7 and one record where they were aiming for. They punted an overtime, too. So, you know, they gave Tom Brady a couple of chances to win it. And I don't care if they won. It was ridiculous. I agree. But it does set up nicely, Gary. The Jacoby Brissette going out on a high note leaves leaves everybody with a good taste in their mouth. And if the other guy comes in and starts to struggle a little bit, then maybe this is the first podcast that gets to capitalize on the bring back Jacoby Brissette, bandwagon. Right? I mean, I'll make the signage in my basement this week. I don't know if I'll unveil it. I don't know if I'll show it off publicly in any way shape or form, but if this is it, this was a really impressive run for him. I just don't see how you could possibly argue he's not a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL right now with the state of quarterbacks in the league and with kind of questionable crop coming up in the draft this year. Someone should have him as their starting quarterback in 2023. If the browns really appreciated Jacoby brisset for his service, they would cut him and let him sign with the jets. Oh, yes. Gotta be awesome. Do the right thing. Yeah, I thought this was, you look at the Buccaneers and they have one of the easier second half schedules in the NFL. I think the second or third is the second half schedule in the NFL. They get the browns right before the other guy comes back and this was the perfect opportunity for them to just sort of start that gliding process. And I thought with Rashad white, starting the game again, had a few nice runs at the beginning of the game. My thought was, okay, this is going to be a, they're going to win this game by 25 points. And I can't believe the browns managed to keep it this close. Yeah. I mean, look, Chris Godwin looks like he's returning to form here. And like you said, it looked like a continuation of the last time we saw them out in Germany where they really were starting to get the run game going for really the first time this season and then it just they just didn't do anything against a brown defense that has desperately struggled to tackle opponents all season. The other thing that came up in this one as the loss is bad enough. Tristan wolfs went down in the overtime session and we don't know how bad it is right now, but it looked pretty bad when it happened. And if they're without him, there aren't many teams that can survive basically what now four injuries on the offensive line, but I mean when Tom Brady is your quarterback, you do need to be sturdy on the front 5 and triss and worst was there best remaining player on that offensive line and if he's out, I just, I don't know where this goes aside from winning the NFC south at 7 and ten and then losing in the first round of the playoffs. Yeah, and that's, you know, I don't know. That would be nice for you and me, but I don't think Tom Brady likes that. You know, that's the bummer about winning the Super Bowl Gary is then you can never not win the Super Bowl, you know? Everything else just kind of seems like a bummer, right? That's what I'm saying. That's what I've been saying the bills fans for a while like. Yeah, like you don't want to win the Super Bowl. You don't want it. You just want to keep climbing and climbing and climbing and never quite get there. Never grab that prize, or it'll just never feel the same after that. And die incomplete. Falcons commanders. We're going to keep on talking about the commanders. They are just, they're avoiding the lightning ish around. Man, there's 7 and 5 Connor. Can you believe that? This is a team that just plays, I mean, every week's just going to be a coin flip. And we saw it in this one. They were they won this game 1913. The falcons had a first and goal around the 5 yard line with about two minutes left, and they end up getting the commanders get a tip interception to basically clinch the game at that point. That's how they're going to do. It's just going to be ugly, unwatchable football, and get just enough plays out of the taxpayer here. And let the defense do the rest. The taxpayer Taylor heinicke always paying his taxes on time, but. There's a couple teams, the cowboys certainly primarily that still have the browns into some degree. But they still have the fresh two headed backfield, which I think it plus a relatively healthy offensive line. And I think that that's just a huge deal for the commanders at this point. They're putting up their logging first downs. They have some semblance of a play action game that is at least starting to help them get the ball to their receivers downfield. And okay, you know, you're going to win a few games that way. And I don't know what happens from here on out, but good for all the players who like good for just the players specifically. That's what I'll say. Good, good for just those guys. When the world gets in the way of your music, try the new Bose quiet comfort earbuds too. "And welcome to the MM QB NFL podcast on Gary bramley. And I'm Connor rohrer. In Connor, we are starting with this packers eagle Sunday Night game. Where I feel like the least interesting development was the final score and the fact that the packers held off or excuse me the eagles out of the packers. And there's just so much more to talk about with the near and long-term future of the Green Bay Packers. Jordan love came in Gary and was spicy. And I think the best throw that he made was incomplete, but he threw an absolute back shoulder rocket to Aaron Jones that went right through his hands. He was almost perfect in this game and obviously very small sample size. But against a pretty good defense borderline, great defense. And you're sitting there thinking, man, what would have happened if Aaron Rodgers was healthy all season? And are these assembled weapons actually kind of good? Is this team actually okay? I don't know, Gary. I'm more confused than when I started the day than no, I'm more confused now at the end of the day than when I was at the start. And that's saying a lot. There you go. Look, the weapons are coming together nicely. Christian Watson and another long touchdown in this one. The grain of salt you take with Jordan love is you say, okay, well, this is a team that, you know, and you will see that didn't prepare for him. It's also an eagle scene that lost Chauncey Gardner Johnson in the middle of this game, read blankenship, who I liked as a prospect, but no one liked enough to actually draft him out of middle Tennessee. And going in there and playing. So you have some shorthanded secondary. You can't throw a whole lot at Jordan love. Now, I would say the other side of this argument that I'm having with myself is when Jordan love got his loan start last year, you're on the road in Kansas City, the chiefs know you're getting the start, they're prepared for you and see spagnolo just, you know, he can throw a million different things at you to confuse a young quarterback. And that was an extremely tall order at that point for that packer scene, but look, he went out there, he felt loose. I mean, like you said, that cover two hole shot to Aaron Jones that should have been caught. That was a really impressive throw. His ball placement was a little bit off, but not drastically off. Like I thought he was, it was fine. The one that he threw, I think it was a little bit behind lazard in the middle of the field. I thought, I thought it was. He was not leading Allen lazard into his impending death by putting it in front of him. Nice safe throwing window. He utilized it. There were also a couple plays where he moved around in the pocket, and if you're not in that sort of clock saving mode, you could take off and he probably could have run for, you know, ten, 12 yards and a couple of these plays here. Yeah, boy, we'll get to some of these scenarios later, but trade him to the Broncos, man. Or something. Let's save them. Let's help them out. Who we got going on down there, but seriously, I don't know how I'm not interested in the packers moving forward this season. Unless we see an extended period of Jordan love, because I think it makes all the sense in the world. Rogers, there's the report today, which is one of my favorite things in NFL media, Gary, which I believe all these guys, but it's always the report that the injury is much worse than you realized. And it's like a time honored tradition now. It comes in the end of November beginning in December, X injury that important player is dealing with is way worse than you can imagine. So he's got the thumb injury now. He's got the rib injury. Just sit you're out. You're out of the playoffs. You're done. Give Jordan love the month of December to make this complicated or to boost his trade value because you're not getting rid of Aaron Rodgers at this point. He basically owns the team. And so I don't know, do something for yourself here, you know? I mean, I would imagine that would come from like Rogers camp, you know, the thumb injury. He actually he's been playing without a thumb for like three weeks. They've just been CGI. On the broadcast here, as they did. I think this kind of gives him an opportunity to kind of be like, you know what? I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna play out the string for a team that again, they're four and 8 now. They're not mathematically eliminated, but this is, you know, and yeah, I mean, they could get to 9 and 8, sure. Like, they're a good team, but I don't know if it really makes sense to try and make this run at this point. Because and we've talked about it a couple of times this year. We expected maybe a bit of not quite as rocky a road as it's been for the packers offense. But, you know, it wasn't going to be what it was with the Monte Adams last year. We thought the defense would be pretty good. The defense is not very good. They have injury issues of their own, but man, Kenny Clark, who is maybe my favorite defensive line in the NFL. He got kind of manhandled tonight. The linebackers without divinity Campbell, they just quay walker is going to be a fine player. He was not up to the task tonight. It was, what are the final numbers here? 7000 rushing yards for the game. No, 360 three, and you always kind of, when you look at the eagles rushing numbers, you have to keep in mind some of these are Jalen hurts scrambles, which kind of inflate things. But a lot of these were not Jalen hurt scrambles. So you were just dudes running through tackles again and again and again. Yeah, they thought that the final, the field goal drive was one of the more commanding when they basically put the game out of reach. That was one of the more commanding drives where it just felt very automatic to me and whether it was Jalen or whether it was Boston Scott or whoever they're going to throw in there. When they have a day where they're groovin and man, they gotta keep Kelsey and all these guys. They have to stay healthy. But if they have, if they have a game where they're grooving, it's over. And I don't know how you stop that. I think offensive line play is so rhythm based because it's really 5 guys moving as one unit and some games you're gonna have great games, some games you're not, but holy smokes. If you could get that kind of push, I mean, that's a Super Bowl caliber team right there. Yeah. And look, another turnover in this game, but just it's just a total fluke turnover. It's AJ Brown trying to make something on a third and long, and ends up losing a fumble. You know, again, they were not gonna go plus two every game from here on out, but that turnover luck has turned against them, and it really hasn't really has an affected them. All that much. Yeah. Yeah, that's great. I'm excited. Gary, we got some packers drama. We have the eagles flying. And we got a really great show. That's what we do. We had exciting games, we had some really defensive, the prideful day for defense across the NFL, I would say. And also just some very sad and quarterbacking that we can kind of point and laugh at. "Podcast I am Gary Grammy. And I'm Jenny frantic. And we are starting off our week 9 Sunday recap with what went down in Kansas City. We're going to talk about the chiefs and what went on with their quarterback and what's going on with their offense. We're also going to talk about a quarterback who did not participate in this game for reasons that you might have heard of. But we're going to start this one off with Jordan love who was forced into action for his first NFL regular season start. And not great. It didn't go great. Yeah, love definitely struggled. I think it's important though to look at the bigger picture and he was put in a situation that was really difficult on the road and arrowhead stadium, which is a tough place to play, even when the chiefs aren't at their peak. Against the defense that blitzed him a lot, whatever you think of how the Kansas City Chiefs defense has been playing this year. Steve spagnolo knows how to get pressure and generate pressure and they certainly were able to blitz a lot on third downs, which played into the woeful third down conversion rate for the packers. Also special teams had a lot of miscues in the first half. And love didn't know that he was going to play until Wednesday and most of the week was dominated by this maelstrom that came out of the fact that Rogers had misled people about whether or not he was vaccinated and then took to a radio interview with a friend to try to explain himself, but ended up spreading a lot of misinformation. So it was just not an ideal circumstance for love to make his starting debut in Gary. And certainly there were things you could criticize about love's performance. His ball placement was often a lot of different situations. He was definitely green, which showed up in critical game management situations. So yeah, he has a lot of work and development to do as a player, but ultimately, I don't know that we should be holding this up as a critical data point necessarily just given all the other stuff that's going on around him..

"Recent conversation on the rich eisen show. Do you see them working with jordan. Every day all day trying to teach teach them as much as he can and So that that's the cool part the era you know. Can you give me an example of that like do you see him off to the side. Giving jordan love tips and things like that so maybe it might be a play in What he saw it was like a if it was like the first read of the second diary maybe what he saw or You know or maybe a little bit on the mechanic side of it or It just goes into so many so many different things or it could be The found at a at the kate is trying to catch them jumping off sides little things so many things and he's just trying to Better the players around him truly so it sounds like not not like an icy relationship. There buck that that it has been a learning environment. There which is healthy there for jordan love and i tip my cap aaron rogers for making that a more comfortable situation that might be. Yeah he an on record talking about how awkward it was for him coming in with brett farve the breath of not necessarily wanting to offer mentorship opportunities for the guy who was there to replace him but damn rises credit. Whenever he's talked about joy he's been very complimentary complimentary. He's praised on he's given is is flowers. I think it's uncomfortable situation when you have been the facing a franchisor. The franchise quarterback in the draft guide. As vincent dare to replace you. It just has to put you in a weird space leader but by all accounts. He's finding a way to manage it. Yeah no doubt. Let's get to the sound here of of matt leflore. This is the The head coach of the green bay packers and this is from otas on may twenty fifth. So here's his conversation or his his thoughts on on where jordan love was in the development process. Now you've had a full year to work with jordan love. What do you think you have there. I just a guy that's eager. Continue to grow and learn. And i love his attitude and in how he attacks it on a daily basis. I think he's he's definitely matured over the course of the year You know you can tell like. I talked about earlier that he's put in the time. This offseason Not only just you know lifting and running and coming in and good football shape but also you can tell that. He's putting in the time in is craft in trying to continue to work at on his mechanics. Fundamentals that are so critical to playing the position at the highest level possible. So he's still got a lot to lot to learn. I think he would tell you that but you know he's gonna take it one day at a time and he goes out there with purpose and You know i just. I like his mindset right now whether that was good stuff there From the floor. Like he's got a tight rope there buck in terms of wanting to instill some confidence in your young quarterback and saying good things about him and the fact that he's got a great attitude he's eager to learn and to grow talked about his maturation. It's like you can't be to venice praise because you don't wanna offend aaron rodgers but you also want to be building up. You're young quarterback. It's kind of a weird spot for matt lafleur to be end. Yeah very weird because you head coach of the entire team but you're trying to manage these delicate relationships three time. Be pnn rogers who definitely wants to continue to be the qb one. The team wants him back So you gotta make sure. There's just enough to make him intrigued by possibility of coming back. And then jordan love you got a young guy who has to get ready to play and as a coach you got to think of all of the worst case scenarios. If aaron doesn't come back we gotta play. Play this guy. How do we get him to rips that. He they need to succeed and thrive and give them the confidence man. A you start my walking a tight rope estimate. Leflore join each time steps to the mic. Yeah you don't wanna get too caught up in what takes place in some of these as and look everybody's positive and it's sunshine and roses across the nfl but it is encouraging when you hear you know jordan was made some big throws and seeing some growth in an improvement there in his place. So that's that's encouraging their for jordan love and for the green bay packers but look. We've talked to everybody. This is a compilation in this episode of pre-draft sound of post draft sound. We've heard from coaches at the college level. The nfl level is general manager. Teammate there aaron jones we haven't heard from his jordan love himself so so let's run a little bit of the sound from him. This is actually after. Ota's june ninth. Here's jordan love talking about his offseason mindset and where he's at what's your mindset just throughout this whole offseason my said this offseason been to get ready and get myself ready. And that's been my mind. Says since i got here and You know or the an was here not here. That's going to be my mindset regardless. Because i have to get myself ready to play And be able to go out there and take charge of the team in Be able to perform at a high level and do my best so everybody else can Do their job as well. Just be able to perform at high level. Like i said so You know my goal is to take day by day. Get better than he'd improve. And what were you thinking. It's the biggest way in which you've grown as a quarterback while know what you're able to get out of last season without preseason games but what's the biggest change in you as a quarterback now versus a year ago Yes so the biggest thing. I've been trying to work on and improve is just taken another step in. You know the offense understanding it understanding what doing my res my progressions Where the ball needs to go breakdown defenses. And just you know the process of a quarterback that will we gotta do so. I just been trying to build on that in a more comfortable in this offense and make plays a so. Obviously last year was such a weird rookie year with the pandemic. And everything like that and obviously this is a very interesting all season for you as well. So how would you sum up your first. Your first two years of your. Nfl experience are going to your second year experience going to my second year. It's definitely been a different year in my first year. I didn't get experienced a lot of things that you know would go on in a normal year so I still like a lot of rookies. Were still unsure of what it's like normal year so getting back to normal year this year. It'll be good to see some some different things but know lash. I was able to you know. Obviously behind aaron behind tim just grow my game and understand the offense and grown a lot of areas that You know you might not have been able to see but just get better off the field. Obviously i wasn't able to get a lot of reps but You know my mental game. In the knowledge. I was able to get last year. I think it's going to help me a lot jordan. Hey i know put putting a ton of offseason workouts being in the ot as many camps in getting first team right now should the opportunity present itself. Are you prepared to be the quarterback week number one hundred percent Obviously this is a time. Where i'm getting a lot of extremely valuable reps that you might not have been getting in a normal circumstance. So i'm just gonna take day by day and But yeah that's i mean that's what i'm here for draft here to play quarterback so.

"My any winks at me. Daza said news like coach. We got this good. Let's love throws execution there. And you know that's an awesome place for him to be because we had some problems in game. We snap the ball horribly to him. We put him behind the gun of an aggressive defense and snap the ball poorly which led to him taking his is down getting his is up. And as you guys a quarterback. That's pretty difficult when you're playing against iraqi oil Defense but disallows through and he keeps battling keeps fighting them. He's going to be a great throw in this offense. You need a special quarterback but we have a special quarterback and a very very special man also the point buck about having all those new kids fifty three kids you know. It's basically a brand new environment for jordan. Love in fact. He learned all their names. I mean that sound insignificant. Some people. I think that's kind of a big deal shows you that There's a a knowledge and understanding outside of yourself maybe selflessness and i think that's something that will play well in an nfl locker room. You know. I think he will play. Will i think you talk about the importance of just knowing everybody's name Being able to get there right because eventually if you're going to be the leader of the team you need to know people have these conversations and For him to go about that early to me displays the level of maturity that only the real well adjusted young players. Get and so he. He has that The fact that he was able to endure a rough season. Because you remember now us. But tom shane in other people. Were talking about him mel kiper. He was the buzz of the draft. And you didn't know the expectations. The pressure the hype. It can filter in in make you play out of character. Death surly showed up in his play his policies. No it's true. I think if he would have maintained his level of play. We're talking about somebody that would end up being a top five pick He would have been right up there in the discussion as the first quarterback off the board. Because that was what you saw there in two thousand eighteen just wasn't able to carry it over for some the reasons we've mentioned But anyways we get to the draft green bay packers. I don't know i. I had put him there in a mock draft at one point time. I don't think. I did it in the final mock draft. I know we had talked about it at times. You probably had them in there as well. I don't even remember. But i know you're had been discussed but it was kind of dismissed by the general public is Let's click bait. You guys are just trying to draw some attention but when you look at you know kind of where. Aaron rodgers was in his career. You look the history of the packers. It wasn't like they were going to force something. You felt like if if a top quarterback fell to them. They wouldn't be afraid to take him and that's exactly what happened in this case. Except they weren't patient actually. Once they saw him getting ranged the they went up and got him. Let's find out the packers are going to do again. They moved up in a trade here with miami. Miami will have two first. Round picks. Here is green bay. Let's find out where they go for this. Let's hope the miami dolphins have traded the twenty six six to the green bay packers. We'd the twenty six thick and twenty twenty. Nfl draft the green bay packers select jordan love quarterback utah state. Okay this is fascinating. Because i believe aaron rodgers is the same age as brett farve was in thousand and five when they selected aaron rodgers in the first round. Stunning brett farve. And you have to wonder how stunned aaron rodgers might be that. A quarterback is going twenty six overall when aaron rodgers went twenty four overall in the two thousand five draft. Just your thoughts on what the packers did. And that connection there. Do one thing a photo was the right move at the right time. People have very very short memories. When it comes to aaron rodgers in those things but arabs this coming off the third year in a row where his completion percentage and his passer rating had declined. And you're beginning to wonder. Is this the end of the line for the quarterback not a career is over but is in. The twilight is a time for us to get the franchise quarterback in the building and with a look. The bulk of the people in the building have been there for a while with the way to aaron rodgers. Able to have success sitting on the bench word to three years before you play. I'm sure there was a factor in a if he kinda plays loggins Or whatever we got a young guy that is ready. If aaron rodgers is not able to pick up his plate we got a young guy who can county get it done. It made sense to me at the time. And i know people are caught up on the trade. And why did they trade up. Why didn't they wait a market position. And if you identify that as a market position particularly when you don't have any other guys in those first round slots worth their great you go and get the quarterback because we talked about. It's the most important position why not sit a solidify. The most important position football. Yeah and you think okay. Maybe it leads to an uncomfortable couple years. Well if it if it's followed up by fifteen years of stability at the position isn't isn't that juice worth the squeeze is the exact same thing to try to see if they can strike. Get lightning in a bottle again. Because that's what happened with. Aaron rodgers and i think the other thing. We'll talk about this later. I think people forget. How am rogers. Career started out in green bay. How he struggled those first. Two preseason barely completing over fifty percent of his passes having questions about whether he would ever be the guy and then year three Chance to get on the field than you're four away go but very similar and has worked out for the green bay packers are thing they wanna they wanna keep the again. See if it works out. Hi buck we. We ended up pulling some sound here from branko akins general manager of the green bay packers and this is after day one of this year's draft as he reflected back on last year's decision to make the move there with jordan love so we wanted to get the perspective of the packers general manager in here. Here's what he had to say. Certainly i think we went into the draft last year. Wanna go backwards to fire but we we had a lot of thoughts about you know receivers in different things and maybe moving up the draft in follow that way so we ended up going to differ route. But we were you know like i said we didn't expect jordan to be. There were exceptionally happy that he was and You know we're excited for his development. He's got a long way to go but we're excited for his development. Well there you go buck i. It sounds like there You know it just kinda fell to them and they're excited about the future here for jordan love. It should be excited. I mean we can argue about whether he was worthy of being a first round play. Whatever there's no doubt that there's tremendous talent there and they have research in place that has allowed the quarterback to thrive. We can talk about the weapons and those things but when you look. They're more than enough weapons for him to hit the ground running if he gets an opportunity. I think it's about the development Mouth or has has talked about is the development. It is learning how to play the nfl way with without turning the ball over. He does things using a tremendous amount of success. Because i think he understands how to win. Yeah i again. I i give him credit and they knew that was probably going to be a little bit sticky little bit messy. You know we can say whether or not we would have made this decision. We know with aaron rodgers still showing. He's got plenty left now. Maybe we wouldn't but hey. I admire people that fall their convictions. If you're convicted on it and believe in jordan love you take him and that's and that's what they did and how. They're you have brian on that whole thing. I think the other side of it. That's interesting is the relationship between the two quarterbacks And i think this one's a little bit different than than maybe the aaron rodgers relationship with brett farve. It sounds like erin has been a little more accommodating. at least that's what i got. According to aaron jones Packers running back with his.

"You just didn't know what was behind the but when you look at them and i think it's interesting if you go back that that was a time where we were really debating justin herbert and jordan love. It wasn't just in herbert. Was not in the discussion at that. Time to and borough like that was more who it'd be between jordan love and justin herbert now find site. Two thousand twenty. We know justin herbs kind of the best of the bunch early on through one year of his nfl career. But at that time there was a time where i had love over. Herbert came out of this week. I think that's that kind of change. You got him side by side. And i thought okay. Herbert may be separated himself. A little bit there from jordan love but that was the discussion. That was taking place. Now i think i mean like now where we look back on. It seems kinda crazy but that was a very real discussion because Just down a game. If people weren't as high on justin herber for whatever reason but they were smitten by jordan loves talent and the potential. Keep in mind also coincided with patrick mahomes playing out of his mind and you know. Dj sometimes the best filters in to our current report. If you missed on a guy the previous year you over correct the following year. Some jordan loves injury had to do with the over correction the scouts. Were doing after missing out on patrick. Mahomes lead us perfectly into this next conversation. I i wasn't here for this one but you had a chance on the field at the combine in indianapolis member of the the combine. We used to have this thing called the comment workout. I miss it. I miss it after last year. But this is. This'll take you back to what that was like because you were on the field with with jordan love chance to visit with him in indianapolis and the subject of the comparison with patrick mahomes came up. So there's been a lot of comparisons and people have thrown out the mahomes comparison because of how pam mahomes looked at a college player and how he's grown and matured as an nfl player. When you look at yourself and you look at pat mahomes. Do you see any similarities. Yeah definitely Now he's a great player I love watching them. And i love to try and take a little bits pieces of his game just know how he plays. You know playmaker gets the job done so try and just do that to myself game so thinking about that because there's been some conversation terrific year two years ago last year was was not the same. You you had a number of turnovers. Explain the differences. Maybe explain why the fall off your final season. Yeah i mean. Obviously turnovers went up You know I had to say no means you know. I felt like i was trying to a little bit too much out there Trying to force throws and some tighter windows that you know could hit the check now. Could've you know took off a run So i just tried to do a little bit too much forcible. So that's that's really interesting because like the self-awareness be able to kind of realize maybe always doing too much When you look at where you want improve and how you would like to play as a pro. How do you take steps to kind of correct. Some of that not not put too much on your own shoulders. Yeah i mean it starts just learning what you need to improve on I've been doing this whole process just trying to know. See in myself. What i need to get better so I think just consisting. That's the main thing today. I mean. I missed throws out there today but Just trying to get better low man. Is this all the part of the deal. We understand how to combine is like you daunted different receivers and the like and then even going back to utah utah state just so and thinking about their football adversity. You had to endure. How's it made it better. How they make you a better pro. Yeah i mean that diversity off as you know it's just i think of it is just learning mistakes Learning things that. I've got to evaluate it and learn from inau can't make those same mistakes y- great conversation their book. I thought he brought it up and it. It makes a lot of sense. It's just there was times in that two thousand nineteen campaign just trying to do too much being a lot of that. I mean he said that. And i think sometimes you can get roped into doing the all thing when the buzzers been on you about being a top pick. Your team expects you to play at that special level. But you don't have the weapons around you debts. You normally have yet. It challenges you in a different way. And so i think jordan luck caught up in that. Some of the mistakes that he made on tape were just poor decisions. Were you struggling to force it. Throw not necessarily trick back over just a bad throw a bad play in a vast nation There's no doubt that the kid is talented enough with is he going to be one of those five star players me so much to be determined based on how he continues to develop and what the packers do when it comes to supply them with weapons on the outside and though don't we mentioned that there was a lot of changeover that at that coaching staff there utah state was matt wells right. Matt wells was there and left and went to texas tech Sitting at gerry anderson there And we had a chance to visit with. Gary anderson was head coach at utah state and gary anderson. That's an interesting insight here. This is a couple minutes of our conversation with him about his very talented quarterback at the time a young jordan. Love won't ask you about your quarterback here in jordan. Love a guy than everybody. Nfl's been paying attention to for a while as a special talent. But what can you tell us about your signal. Caller specialists kid. Well he makes you smile in a lot of ways you know tremendous player. He makes you smile because he's just he. He's a leader He steady eddy. He's t we have fifty three fifty four new kids in our program this year and he knows everyone their names. I would bet he knows everyone of those kids names. And he's excited about them being part of the team and he's not too big for any part of this process he'd i guess easiest way for me to up jordan love off the field. If i had a daughter i would be real proud. Follow sudden you know. He said hey. Could i marry her. I'd be really really happy about that. Because he's a special special young man on the field. You always had a couple of three different coordinators. He's handled that very well as he's gone through time he's a spongy. Wants to get better. He always just right in the middle Last game we score while offense touchdown. That's not like us. that's not. That's not who we are on offense and we know we were playing a great offense but it was. Those last two drives are look at jordan. Catch his eye. He catches.

"You and patrick mahomes when you seem patrick mahomes. Is there any little bit of his game. That might be in your majesty. Liu yali patrimony crazy arm strength crazy ability to throw the ball. You know different angles stuff like that. I think i have that You know that's where i see some ladies and You know make plays you know Like i said don sidearm. No don crazy deep passes beano may plays. I mean that's where you can compare us in a. I feel like that you know comparable him in that aspect old. I tape that i watched. The summer was watching his michigan state. Last year you have a throw in that game that's as good as anybody's head and its entire draft. That's one of the best of us that i've ever seen against michigan. State one down the field kid. Can you recall a what the play call was what you saw and how you execute on play you talking about a deep one. I wanna see you were wrong to let it left left. Throwing was yeah. I mean the play. Six napa on me. I have my post wheel. House cheers and had a stick around from number three So i got off that you know. D annual beat the tackling size. So i had to get out of. The pocket started rolling so wheel. Feel kinda. just do a sidearm Not complete a catch on. Yeah it's ridiculous. So that is i wanna ask you about one more. Because i'm watching game this year one stage right before it's in the second quarter towards the end of the second quarter. Hit a corner out going over to the left. Drop in that game as well. You remember what that went to call. Was there and what you saw. Unfortunately these highlights don't end with the guy catching football but they were amazing throats. I can't even think you should leave. Was a corner out about two or three minutes before half-time. I think this one you were going to the right and hit a corner out. I know i know. During the lsu game scramble to the right one Might even have been a post on zoos slant when are scrambling are turn into like a deep of conic throat. But he actually. He caught it then. He headed got hurt shoulder on that play. When we're talking about now that was a lot even a posted dropped in that game at some point. Little that describing. This listening to conversation speaks to a gunslingers mentality once who are fearless there could raise. They continue to throw in the tight windows regardless of turnovers in the light. How do you maintain aggressive mentality. Even if you've had some mistakes early yeah So yeah being augusta you know especially off this year in a lot of mistakes but you know you just gotta be able to stay confident. That can make the pros. Obviously just situation will get smarter on decisions. I need a may not force about need to still have that confidence to be able to make couple of things. I want unpack here. First of all. You know you talk about facing adversity. You don't you. Don't get more diversity than losing your father at the age of fourteen. So i thought he made a great point there. Nothing will be hard or anything. He has to deal with. Whether it's a quarterback controversy or maybe a bad game here there s not going to face this kid with what he's been through in life. Dj here's the thing when you have a guy who has gone through tough times you do find out a little bit about them in handling all the things they handle. You'd like to think did he's tough ingredient to endure the circumstances that will eventually face as maybe the starting quarterback of the packers in time. What i like about him in terms of the toughness in the middle daddy display. I don't think it really impacted his play. And i think he's able to focus and kind kinda. Do the things that you need to do to be a high end player And so we always talk about people stories in their testimonies. I think he certainly has a testimony. We'll see how that benefits him going down a lot. I go back into my church. Here and talk about testimonies. Were does that word come from. He comes from being tested right. This kids had tests like really been tested in his personal life. And i think that's going to help him as he tries to navigate a different situation like this is just his his launched his. Nfl career is a lot different than These other quarterbacks that have entered the league last year. So i think he's equipped to handle that. We talked about the senior bowl there and talk to him prior to that game. That was the interview. Just listened to but when you think about it. That's the last game that he's played in. There was no preseason last year with the with the covert off season so the last competitive football game that jordan love is competed and was was the senior bowl so we went back through and just grab some snippets of our analysis From that game so this is You and me out there buck Anderson juliano charles davis That this is a little bit of what we had to say during that senior bowl contest room to run on thirteen. Thirteen affleck hasty is not gonna make it to the twenty five yard line. Dj in buckingham. Bring you in on this as well. You guys have talked about decision. Making for jordan love this past season. He get better. I thought he made a great decision there. He could have run the football but rather than put himself in. Harm's way pitched it off to a back and let him take. Would you guys these make good decisions. Book go go to you on that one as well but to be. He's showing off a little bit of his arm strength and then no one to pull back a little bit so far. I know they haven't put up points. I've liked what i've seen from jordan love. I think it's been a solid performance. I think the big thing everyone wanted to see is could he of play connected us football from the pocket. He has shown that in this game need to continue to what the rest of the four i did. We learn anything about jordan. Love today and i know he's still on the field but early. I don't think we did. But he's he's very smooth. The ball you can watch how we operate throws football is pretty as you'll ever see it just hadn't had the volume of place you need to make a statement. I love to bring bucky in on that buck. Just because when you have a guy with his skill set what it does to the volume of your playbook i mean it just expands it like when he got versatile like so much With it i think as we're seeing national football league these creative coordinates guys. That can bring other stuff to the table. It allows them to dig deeper. Makes it harder for the office so thinking back about here in those Those words what stands out to you from what we saw down their mobile they. I think the thing that stands out there was so much hype surrounding his play in performance in terms of coming in the patrick mahomes saying because remember pets mahomes was popping in earnest and a lot of that was due in a lot of the comparisons were due to patrick. Mahomes been in a similar situation. Where he steph for year he was That was hard to figure out Join certainly benefited from that. And so what i wanted to see. When we were down there was well. What is the talent like because what we knew about mahomes. The talent was extraordinary. You just didn't know if a guy who could play sandlot could really rain it in play a high level i think for jordan love. He has some of that but he didn't play to the same level of their patrick mahomes and when you get them in the senior bowl there was some uncertainty not necessarily debt unshakeable confidence that you expect a a high level player with guns. Think mentality to have as i think you kinda left there. Maybe a little reserved cautious very very talented. But and you just didn't know what was going to be after that but talented but a developmental player talented. But he's gonna be a turnover machine and you have to play around those things talented but we can work around. Whatever issues are and he will be function start..

"They have the same guys coming. They're building around it. Could they be better this year and your guy is holding out for whatever. Lack of communication or failure to communicate has occurred. Nothing has changed and at some point. Whether it's martin murphy james saint. It's not about the gm got me about something. You're not upset about nothing so whatever it is. Let's get together and have a discussion about it and put this thing to bed. So if it's about a phone conversation whatever we had let's get together. Let's apologized let's let's move on. Here's the biggest point. I want everybody to hear the best. Chance for aaron rodgers and the best chance for the green bay. Packers is to be together. That's the flat out truth. He has his best opportunity to win a super bowl with this team this year. Green bay has the same. So whatever pride you'd have to put aside whatever apologies need to be made. Everybody needs to make that so we can get this thing going in the right direction. Which is the potential to win the super bowl. Yeah and i'm glad you talk about what they have to do right now. You know i come from where i come from an illegal world. There's this idea that you can't negotiate the past. You can't go back negotiate deal based on how somebody felt back then. You gotta move forward and christianity. I wonder how much of a problem is it. That at least according to what we're hearing aaron rodgers has not come out and said exactly what he wants because where i come from. If you don't know that what are you negotiating on. What what are you discussing puts the packers for an office in a really tough spot right. Mark murphy's been reported that he's going to travel at some point over the next couple of weeks to go visit with aaron rodgers. And i'm interested to see.

"Who goes well because whoever goes i could set the bar for the other can be very interesting. The other question is what is baker debt. And how do you deal with him. although. I can't imagine them not extending and we'll see what happens there. All right guys. Speaking of payday to pay for tennessee. Because it's a huge day. They're julio jones expected to be introduced to the media and he's expected to be on the practice field. The titans traded for him on sunday and is a rival has raised expectations even further in twenty. Twenty one you see him getting off the plane right. They're ready to work and our espn reporter. Diana rossini is working already joining us. Now live from tennessee. Diana what are you hearing from. Titans can high right. Yeah it seems to be a bit of a surprise around here that julio jones is gonna be out at the practice field is going to be the first time we will see him with this offense in his number two jersey. That's the number he'll be wearing. Aj brown who wears number eleven. We know that he's looked up to julio his whole life he actually had a conversation with julio he said look you you take the number. Julia said nope. That's your number. You're the guy here. So julio chose to go with number two so he will be out on the field today and remember. These are voluntary practices. Leo doesn't have to be here. He's expected to be here next week for many cap. Which is where we'll see. Probably more of this offense in action now. I actually ran into john. Robinson just about fifteen minutes ago right here in the parking lot. He apologizes for this background. Here he says rodney construction. We're getting a brand new facility. A new studio and joked. I said yeah some construction here and some construction to this offense now that you have julio on your team and you know he laughed but he's all business because as much as there's hype they just really want to see him on the field. John did all the work in terms of trade dealing with atlanta. He shared a little detail that on saturday. When this trade went down he was on a pontoon boat with his family taking calls with atlanta to make this deal go down and obviously had tons of success with that. And we know. Julio now will be out on the field and probably the most important element for today. Julio is just going to get adjusted working out his timing with ryan tannehill as we know who actually had some experience in this offense because remember in atlanta when kyle shanahan was that offensive coordinator those offenses if they did then and that they do here in tennessee very similar so they just got to kind of stir the brain there and the mechanics to get. Julio caught up right know what get them. Caught up is not going to be the biggest. I still can't get over the pontoon boat. But diana despite the construction background you always do an excellent job so great to talk to you. Thanks ryan any time all right. Let's bring in our guys and talk a little bit about. Julio okay guys. So i just wanna go through this a little bit. Some are saying that the titans have become the biggest threat to the chiefs in the afc. I wanna know if you agree. I'll start with you grows. Who is the biggest threat to the chiefs in the afc. I still think it's buffalo. The team they had to beat in the afc championship game to get to the super bowl last year. They're very very close. You know they feel like their roster. The people talk about what tampa bay's bringing back buffalo. Didn't win the super bowl but their their roster state intact their coaching staff has stayed intact. A quarterback made major.

"Yeah there's no pressure there's nothing that if they if they were worried about the hope of him on the practice but they should never jackson the first round. This is normal progression. I equate this to a freshman playing on the varsity football team right. There's a lot of things coming at you. It's like drinking from a fire hose right. Everything's hitting you. At one time. He has to slowly progress and build his way in his attitude in the interview. Talking about yama be ready. He should expect to be ready. If there's numbers called you want to go playing you want to produce for the green bay packers but listen we're tracking this guy all every throw if it's an overthrown going downfield enough as he checking down. We have no idea how practices being designed for him. If he's doing the right things the wrong. The progression for jordan love is going to be slow and steady. Anybody thinks he's gonna come in and all the sudden just had this command of offense. He's not he didn't listen. When he was coming out of college. They had development questions about him. And now you've don't where he didn't even dress for a game. He wasn't a backup last year. It's gonna take him some time he'll be just fine. Let's just not make every throw be a super bowl winning. Throw okay there. you have it. I got to bring in chris. Canty dan graziano. Louis riddick bring our guys in lewis. Here's the thing that keeps occurring to me all right. If he gets a one day does not a season make. We don't know what that's going to tell us about him. But i gotta say if he's strings together a lot of good days and looks really good. I wonder how his play right now. If it has any impact on aaron rodgers situation not necessarily does although i will say this look personnel departments. Coaching staff discuss personnel every day..

Are the Packers Preparing for Life After Aaron Rodgers?

"Take a listen to our friend. Chris canty who was on keyshawn. Jay will zubin. The packers are telling you that prepares you for life. After aaron rodgers one front last season was with the personnel. This front. This offseason is with the financial house and making sure that they can have aaron rodgers on a year to year proposition rather than committing cab dollars and resources to in future years so i think that this is mark murphy in his roundabout way of saying. We're getting ready for life after aaron rodgers. We don't know exactly when that is because we gave him that contract in two thousand eighteen. We're going to be the ones to determine when exactly that happens. Not the player you heard them. The packers are preparing for life after aaron rodgers. No doubt obviously. They drafted now first of all that they really liked to take jordan. Love means that they didn't decide this year. We're going to take a quarterback they. They decided within like a two to three year window. Probably when we see a quarterback. We think we will be great. We're going to grab him and that we could actually get in the draft because they usually have a good record and jordan love they grabbed. They think he's going to be the next great one. When you look at the packers time between store and brett farve but you know as pretty you know breakfast starring brett farve and then during brett forbes rain they draft aaron rogers and rogers even better than fourth. Now they have gordon love. They're preparing for life after aaron rodgers. The thing is what tom brady just showed you. Is these dudes playing to their mid forties nowadays early mid forties. Who knows how much time. Rogers has

Bill Barnwell on Bears versus Packers

"Watching bears and packers and aaron rodgers to the surprise of literally. Nobody just decimated the bears and mitch trubisky forty one to twenty five so i wanna turn this conversation to the horse race. The mvp conversation because there really hasn't been a wire-to-wire front runner. This whole time. We've seen the pendulum kind of swing. Russell wilson kyle murray. Was there for hot. Second mahomes obviously and aaron rodgers who remains squarely in the thick of it after an off season full of drama around jordan. Love being drafted at quarterback and yet there is aaron rodgers just dominating again robert tanya and guys at touchdown to robert tanya made aaron rodgers the eleventh. Qb in nfl. History to pass for more than fifty thousand yards the second-fastest so where are you on. The whole rogers ram vp. Okay so i. I'm inclined to pick. Patrick mahomes by choice right now. And i think the only thing separating those two with russell wilson third is that one disastrous game. Rogers had against the bucks earlier this season. And i think if you're going to make a case for rodgers. Mvp to start with the idea that he's doing more with less and mahomes has to work with. And wilson has to work with the homes of course has a dominant group of receivers with Terry travis kelsey leading the way. Russell wilson has decay metcalf and tyler lockett and we talked about this before the season. Rogers has devante adams and a lot of question marks. Rogers has injuries and opt-outs affecting his receiving corps from week to week and on top of that. The guys who are extra showing up are posting the second highest drop rate for any quarterback in the league and yet when you put rodgers back there even against a very good defense which the bears are. There are stretches this year. He looks absolutely untouchable. The bears had no answers for him on sunday night. So the other

"Operate Jacobin the NFL draft came off without a hitch last night and was a welcome relief in rounds two and three you'll be tonight but this week's event as certainly re energize the football fan commissioner Roger Goodell was a guest on CBS this morning is hoping the NFL can start on time but the draft continues tonight last night's first round didn't have any surprises up top but they came later in the evening the Packers at the biggest eye opening move trading up to take Utah state quarterback Jordan love Green Bay is coming off a conference championship game appearance but instead of adding a weapon for Aaron Rodgers of which there were several possible wants to add they didn't step decide to draft his successor GM Brian Goodwin said it came down to finding the top player on their board Rogers was drafted late in the first round fifteen years ago and sat behind Brett Farr for three years perhaps the Packers will follow that same plan with love certainly needing seasoning after a down year with the Aggies the Bengals let off the draft by taking Heisman Trophy winner Joe borrow as expected all the number one pick in tonight's second round as well some of the other winners from last night's first round include the Miami Dolphins went three picks in the opening round and still got to a talk by lower thought was the tank for two up but that seemingly went out the window when they won five of their last nine games but they still got their guy at number five the Alabama quarterback is downplayed concerns over his injury saying he's fully recovered from hip surgery they also drafted some protection selecting offense of tackle Austin Jackson out of U. S. see the box also beefed up their offense of line moving up a spot to take some protection for Tom Brady and I was tackled Tristen worst tiki and Tierney will have complete coverage of tonight's festivities beginning
