"Your voices is recognized around the country. And your enthusiasm and passion for the game of football is obvious on DATs. The one thing I didn't see a whole lot of just from a very from a obviously, from a novice fan's perspective last couple of weeks, they just didn't bring it. You know, honestly, yesterday I thought the intensity level was so much better, but going back to the San Francisco 40 Niners game two weeks ago that to me Really, really bothered me, bro. Watching that you just watching the 40. Niners basically lineup offensively and run the ball down the throats of the Arizona Cardinals. That really bothered me because They had a third string quarterback in CJ. Beth Heard that there were starting out there wasn't Jimmy G wasn't Nick Molins there? Back up. It was the third string quarterback. Basically, the only thing they could do is run the ball for the most part in that situation, and that's exactly what they did in the fact you couldn't stop him. That bothered me greatly When you look at yesterday, and the play in game win and you're in, I heard you were in the pregame talking about that mentality. What is it that they didn't bring? Because we had a We had a backup quarterback in They had their third string quarterback in things were pretty. Even What did we not bring? Yeah, you know, honestly, I just It was the playmaking ability that we've always seen from the likes of calamari. You could see when collar. Murray was in that game, right the difference and how they were able to move the ball COLUMN. Murray when he did play through the ball very, very well. And I think that is a conversation that We've all gotta have about Kyla Murray is how bad was he hurt? I think he was definitely hurt. I know the injury. Morgan Fox came down with the knee right on that ankle right there. You could just see it through. That was bone on bone, baby. If he doesn't let me just say this if Cuyler Marie does not have a hairline fracture or some type of fracture, I'm going to be stunned. Today. If we find that out if he gets an Amar I done and there's nothing structurally wrong with that. He is a tough player. Two. He is not a kid that's known as soft. He's a tough kid. Here's a kid that will tell you right now. He'll he'll be the first one to tell you doesn't like contact. But all I know is this. This kid is lined up for 32 consecutive starts. He came out of Oklahoma. Everyone is like all of the kids. 5 8.5 is 5 8.5, and he's He's £198, and he's not gonna hold up in the NFL. Well, we all found out. It was 5 10 in an eighth and he was £207, of course, and he's played in 32 consecutive games. The kid has gone out when he has been hurt. I don't I don't question this kid's toughness. I don't I question his maturity. He's got to continue to mature as a franchise quarterback on this team. He's a young kid. He's only in his second year. Give this kid some time. Who's the leader on the defense? Or who needs to be the leader on the defense? Because it seems when the need when they needed to make a big stop. They're unable to do it. Yeah, there doesn't seem to be that voice on that defense. The Darnell dockets of that team there anymore. Can I tell you right now, Jordan Hicks has had an up and down season the mike linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals. He's had an up and down season but coming into this game, knowing what kind of game I thought it was going to be, because the Rams are starting John Woolford Ah guy that had never thrown a pass in the National Football League because I thought there were going to line up and try to run the ball. I said Jordan Hicks is going to be my ax factor. He's going to be the guy that's going to get everyone else lined up, because that's what a Mike backer does. He controls that box gets every Buddy lined up in the box Buddha Baker's taken care off the secondary. Jordan Hicks is getting everyone else lined up the physicality. They needed Jordan Hicks to be that physical presence inside. Well, what happens on the very first play of the game? He makes a pick as well. It's just a great read. Great read of John Wolford's eyes and jumping that that was a horrible pick by John offered by the way, but that to me was the X factor that Jordan Hicks brought to the table and then guess what happened. He got hurt. First quarter and was out And so the cardinals were suffering pretty badly. Let's shift to the talk. That happens every time the sea when the season ends Larry Fitzgerald. Yes, I know Larry Fitzgerald. Okay. You know what? I'm going to say this right here for the last three years, bro. I've been saying every year. Larry's done. Where is this is Larry's last year? The Larry's Don't so I'm going to do it. Ah, fourth year in the road right here. Larry is done. Where is not coming back? Just knock it off. He's not coming back. And Larry, if you're listening right now, you better come back. I just don't see him going out this way. Cove in 19 Seasons fans. Not there If there's a guy banged up, Yeah, and if there's a guy that deserves a victory lap around this league for the human being, he is and what he's brought to the game. It's a Larry Fitzgerald. Yeah, I would agree with that. I hope he does come back. I absolutely love this guy. What a class act he truly is and a joy to watch play this game. One of the greatest of all time. I don't care what position you play. I'm talking about a great football player and a guy that didn't shy away from any contact. And what's interesting is that most people have been around him would say he was his equally good human being as he is a football player. Absolutely. And that's why I think if, in fact he is done playing, I think more than anything else. It'll be that desire to go out and start career number two. That won't get him going and headed in that direction. There's a guy like Larry Go to the broadcast booth. Does he go to do something else? I was gonna go do some, like, you know, go work for humanity somewhere. Yeah, I don't. I don't see him going to the broadcast booth immediately. Maybe at some point in time, But, yeah, I see him on safari, for the most part. Taking a bunch of underprivileged kids also, look at the elephants. You know, I did some work with safe into the Paul feeding and you know, one out there for Thanksgiving one year and Larry showed up with a bunch of people and what was so interesting about it was that everybody Larry brought with him jumped in to help. Well, they were just standing around for pictures. They all jumped in to help. Larry was meeting everybody, but everybody worked. It was a cool thing to see. You know, it really is..

"Back. I am Jim Rome. I said I would go back back, and that's exactly what we're doing. Former MLB Ryan Dempster. Last segment. We're joined right now by a linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals. He is a Super Bowl champion. He had 10 tackles in Sunday's win over Washington. For the season. 16 tackles two for a loss a career high last year, 150 tackles a sack and a half 11 tackles for loss. Three. I aunties, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery last season. He leads all active linebackers in interception since 2015 with 10 He was the 84th pick overall, back in 2015 at Texas. Arizona's out fast there to know they're in first in the NFC West, and they're hosting Detroit Sunday. Jordan Hicks is my gas, Jordan. Good to have you back? How are you? Um, great. Appreciate the intro. Appreciate you coming back Jordan so to know it was not his to know for the first time in five seasons. How much better his life When you roll out of the rack, you wake up, you goto work and you are, too. Oh, no. It's so much better. You know, you play this game to win. And really, uh, Monday and Tuesday there. Ah, you know, determined Mood wise based on how you perform on Sunday, so you know, being to know is obviously great. Got a lot of work to do. Moving forward. Gotta gotta tough season ahead of us. But You know, we're taking a one time we're talking to Jordan Hicks. What about that one over Washington? That was a game where you held them scoreless in the first half, and to just three points for the first three quarters. You'd probably tell me that you were not thrilled about allowing a couple of TGS and the fourth butt overall. How pleased were you with the way the defense showed up this past Sunday? Yeah, Obviously there's there's things we feel like we can improve, you know, especially with it being only the second game and performing like that. You know, we were pleased and quite a bit of aspects. But You know, a lot of a lot of what were predicated on a stop on the run and something that you know we want to do better than that. But you know, we fix what she notices. We fixed a lot of things from last year from this point to that point, so You know, that's really what we're focused on. We're taking it. One game at a time. One day, the time just making sure that we're tryingto detail our craft, and you know it. Obviously, the outcome outcome is determined on that. George Hicks is my guest. I like that. You're looking to detail your craft. Now you're captain this year my senses with or without that title, you are always going to look to lead from the front. That said, What does the title mean to you? And knowing the respect that comes along with that? How does that make you feel? Yeah, it means it means a lot for me to say that you know me. Me being a captain is something that I take lightly would be would be a lot. You know, I put a lot of Got away in the respect and the leadership that I that I carry out there on the field. Um and you know for me, it's always been a goal. It's It's been something that I've I've strived to become. And again, it's It's respect you. No, I say it all The time. I played this game for respect and and to leave. Leave a legacy. You know for those those behind me and for my Children, and so You know when when you get something like that? That is a statement of respect. So you know it's it's appreciated by the players and means a lot. You get a sense of how much the game means to you and how much of craft means to you. You and I have talked in the past, but your time in Philadelphia and the bad luck that you had when it came to injuries, then you break out last year with 150 tackles. Which was third most in the NFL. How satisfying was it to have a season like that? Where you were impacting the game? Helping your team week in and week out? Yeah, very, very satisfying. You know, at the end of the day, Jim, it was it was about health. You know, I was able to play every snap last year, and I think you know the stats correlate with my ability to stay on the field. You know, I've always said as long as I could be out there, things will fall into place on DH. That's just that's what happened last year. Obviously, we didn't perform the way we wanted to, you know, and obviously that's where we're We were trying to, you know, get better and correct. But personally, you know my ability to show that I can stay on the field, you know, and and create that. That momentum moving into this year. You know, mental lot and and I think it's it's propelled, you know myself in the right direction. You know, it's like you want to have that moment, Um, Jordan, but the Aussies was just so unusual, and it's or not to be unlike any other offseason, it came before it like you had some trips that you had planned. Everything went up in the air. What was the experience like for you? And how did you and your family approached? This particular offseason. Yeah, it was. It was completely different. Obviously, for everybody. We actually we hunker down from Austin, Texas. We hunkered down in Austin, my family and I and I was listening. In the garage running around the neighborhood, finding a field to do my drills on. You know, it was. It was really a test of how much of a pro you know you can be and Ah ah, lot of the facilities around me were closed. So I was I was isolated. I had to do everything on my own. And so I got creative. Have some people in my corner that help me out. But it was completely different. And you know it's it's Ah, It's kind of been saying it's It's therapeutic to be back playing football around people, you know, getting back to normal life. You know, that's got to be the case. What's it like? I mean, if it's therapeutic being around people and having that Klaus close proximity and doing the thing you love most, I get that. What's it like doing that, though in from an empty stadium? It had a lot of conversations on it. It's different. It is. You know, you watch the games on TV, and it's it's actually louder. The crowd noise seems louder on the TV that actually isn't persons in person. It's It's quiet in the stadiums, and so you know, it's it's an adversity that You know, we're all facing and you know, whoever face is that the best is going to come out on top and you know, it's just it's part of the new normal that we're having to deal with now. Our for us. You know, we haven't made any an excuse. We just You know it is what it is, and we're looking past it. You know, George I was saying on the NFL on CBS. I had an appearance this past Sunday and one of my takes was about Cuyler Murray and I said for my money, Lamar Jackson Pound for Pound is not the most electric guy in the NFL. Patrick Holmes is not even the most electric player. I'm not saying the Cuyler is yet in their class. I'm saying for my money, he is the most electrifying athlete I've seen in a long, long time as a linebacker. What do you think when you watch him?.

Whatever what are the questions <hes> do we hit him with the last one you gotta do it. Yeah you have been placed into a hot tub time machine and you can go back to any moment in baseball history and bear a witness. You can be there. You can watch can't get your seats in the dugout but you can be there and watch what moment is it and why. I don't know that's tough. That's a tough one wha- what seems as you grow up a fan of <hes> i mean i was. "Four six. The pitch pools takes a fastball in there at one hundred Hicks. It's two and one. So pull whole six on the all time home run list third on the all-time RBI list with over two thousand. See this is the combination. It's just not playing anymore and Albert pufus on the extreme side of it at thirty nine but baseball executives understand with the increase of law city younger players tend to have more bat speed to one pitch. Looking fantastic. Now the blue sky behind it. One pitch. Fletcher looks at a fastball at one hundred for strike one out or half of the Blake, I want you to stay at that hotel. That's right to the right of the arch that distributor, one is the millennium hotel does that sound right at. But now it looks tired dicey. I mean, it's got a little bit of every, it's got a touch of everything. The parts of the window scary. A little bit. One and two to count Hicks. The pitch curve is low and outside two balls. Two strikes. Angels, looking for a base runner and trying to get the tying run of the play up did homered against Hicks in the eight to make it a two run game? They're extending Hicks having to go five outs for the save. To pitch Fletcher swings. And he fights it off foul at home play now was one hundred from Hicks. Two balls. Two strikes. David fletcher. Appears to be the Swiss army knife. For bread awesomeness moves around in the middle of games positions. Due to pitch plus your swing and a miss the curve got seconds strikeout for Hicks. But again, you got a young kid that you're closer. You're sending them out there anything for taking back in the dugout to sit down and then going back out to pitch. That's just not the way they closures are typically handled. Now he's coming out of this game. Gago supper. The bullpen. As well as the lefty Tyler web, and we'll see what the cardinals wanna do and because of injury that reliever given as much time as needed to get loose. As after Hicks through the pitch. "Tony Kemp Kevin pillar Christian yelich, and Eric themes, or the four players who had combo meal since our last show. Probably not much to say about camp Palomares just a batting average on base drag, but he ended up with fifteen in homers, fifteen steals yelich currently leading the league in home runs and stolen bases. Last time that happened seems awfully rare to me, and Eric Fame's, who I mean he's just is not turning it around. He's thirty five home. Runs last season. And now he's available and every league amazing. It is. And they're using them pretty smartly. They worked him in here initially from the, the righty lefty platoon going on with Aguilar. And I think we're gonna see more of times if you keeps this up and yellow, just showing no signs of stopping what he's doing his, his numbers over the last, like what hundred six games like fifty something homers in two three seventy batting average, like Anne running like he doesn't even need basis. And he's doing it. It's amazing. What he's like you're. Question about the, the league leader in both categories just because we think we're still in basis were, if you flash back twenty years ago, twenty plus years ago, it would be tough to do that. Ricky Henderson didn't have a prayer of doing what was the last time? Anybody led the league in both? I, I don't know. And we got a tweet today from our friend, Tom, the internet said that yelich top three in all five of the player raider categories, that's got to be something we've never seen before this. Would not be shocked. If trout had a year where he qualified as top five. I'd have to I'm gonna I'm gonna have to dig that one up. But it's gonna take a little time. All right. Let's move it on now. And let's talk about the closers in the carousel. Cavs. Okay, who do we need to discuss here? I car knows I think so because cross Martinez got two inning. Save on Sunday. But Jordan Hicks was was warming up Martinez just didn't throw that many pitches in the eighth inning. And it was the Mets there was like no threat at the bottom there lineup. Although they had pinch hitters coming up. I thought it was a bit odd. Like, why would you have Hicks warm-up warming up? It's not like hitching a game. But like I've seen it with the Phillies like penny Schick, a warm up and that they view that as an actual outing, I don't think Hicks is losing the job. I think it's I think he's still there closer, the now one of the things that makes me curious about Martinez, is that I know he has said and I do believe the cardinals have given hint to this that it's the rotation for him pretty soon, really. I just read this over the weekend, I'm trying to put This new. chart mentioned that he is expressed it. My understanding is at least, you know, and it's possible that people are passing on information, second hand and they're interpreting, interpreting his words for the teams words, but there are hints, that they're going to work and back towards the rotation in the second half. Do you drop way? Davis of the Rockies. That's the guy thought we would. Most. No, I think that was just one of those weird series and I think he's going to be alright on the road, but I, I am alarmed here, Scott over expen- fine behind him, you know, I mean it was just one of those weekends. Of course field they happen. I mean they shouldn't happen, but they do that was crazy. He was hit hard in the ninth inning. But again, it was like a golf ball pounding like a pinball machine. It was crazy. What was going on there? I still Wade Davis gets more than. Twenty five saves a season up to thirty see that happening. Like I've been saying for well over is better than Davis. But, you know, the Rockies don't care about that 'cause they're paid in that way. You know, when you pay those closer contracts, you gotta give him saves..

"I'm after Jordan Hicks got pretty big money to go to the Zona cardinals. I'm not sure Jordan Xs, even Pederson Zac Brown and the eagles got him for like pennies on the dollar. Jordan Hicks, does count towards a competitor. We pick formula. Zac Brown doesn't that seem? Like, a great move Countess is a guy that will probably be the third or fourth safety for the eagles. He was claimed off waivers doesn't count against the compensatory pick formula. And then Cody Kessler gives them competition for Nate side felt in the backup quarterback job, which is important Philadelphia. With Carson Wentz his injury history. And then I you know, the Stephanie was new skis morning. I'm just like shocked given the state of NFL offensive line play that nobody get paid him more than one point five million on one year deal. Like, are you kidding me? Seven with new skis played very well at center at both guard spots, and nobody thought he was a better option than than what they've got. I mean, I'm like amazed absolutely amazed that nobody went out and paid him more than that. And maybe he didn't really. To go. Maybe somebody offered a more. You didn't want to go. You wanted to stay with the eagles. I don't get it. But I'm loving all of those moves really for the eagles. I just think it's one reason why they're one of the best franchises these days. Jaguars linebacker tells them Smith posts on Instagram that he's not gonna be football this year. This is a head scratcher for me Bry. You know, he's scheduled to make a lot of money. He won't make a dime of that. Now. It seems pretty clear that there's something going on personally in his life. So it's kind of tough to comment on it. Right. I mean, you know, there's got to be something very, I don't know if it's personal health. I don't know if it's the health of a loved one. I don't know if it's a family situation. You know, he's not saying he's not talking about it other than the say, he's not gonna play football this year. I think it's weird that he put that post on Instagram before he talked to the Jaguars about it. You know, the only franchisees ever played for. It's a little bizarre that he didn't talk to them about it. And instead, you know, just posted on Instagram. I can't say I really understand that it does make sense now that the Jaguars signed some of these veteran linebackers that they signed recently that makes a little bit more sense. That they did that. But still I just kind of a bizarre situation. Really? I mean that that hopefully everything's okay. Telvisions seemingly always been a good guy. Good player. Let let's hope he's ok, and let's hope whatever's going on with him that he's okay. And that's been really the sentiment from the Jaguars. You know? And I think people think part of the reason why they signed Najji. Good jake. Ryan they drafted Quincy Williams in the third round. I mean, I think people believe that they made all those signings. They made Romy Wilson because they wanted to have some depth just to make sure I think they knew something like this. Might happen. They thought that this might happen. And so they want to be prepared. But you gotta think at some point more information will come out regarding this. Jeez. Stuck by the Seahawks. They cut Doug Baldwin and Kam chancellor with failed physical, and then they signed defensive end Ziggy answer. Oh. Did you call them dog Baldwin? I didn't mean to if I did sound like you call them dog Baldwin. I will say this the dude played like a dog. And I know I don't know if this is out there public. I think it is. But like, I know players and coaches have told me that his nickname was angry. Doug because he was always angry ornery about something. And that really is what fueled him to have an unbelievable career. We kind of knew this was coming. There had been some reports about it Kim chancellor didn't even play last year. So that's a totally different situation. But Doug Baldwin. You know, I think that they were hoping he'd play this year, but three surgeries one off season in my mind..

"E could he could not I mean, I've been high on this dude since he showed up, and I think I really think the Pittsburgh pirate fan base needs something to be excited about needs to do that they can hang their hat on. And I believe Tom is that Jared does it have to be a starting pitcher? Because the first thing the cancer mind was a pitcher. But it was not a starting pitcher. No, actually, the question was which young pitcher so feel free to answer accordingly. Oh, okay. Great. Because I am going with Jordan Hicks built owing with Jordan Hicks. I control initially for this guy. But anytime that you're talking about one four one zero five on the gun with movement. These are sinkers these are not forcing fastballs that. He's throwing. Yeah. I'm going to be paying attention anytime that I'm looking at one of my five TV's here at the launching pad during baseball season, and it's ready to to. It's it's time to close out a game in Saint Louis. I will be paying attention to that game. For that simple reason that Jordan Hicks is the guy that's getting the ball tonight. Yet realized I mean, it's only about thirty miles an hour or so less jeered. But like he almost throws quite literally twice as hard as you. Do. That's not true at all. That's incredible. Like. That's if he threw twice as hard as me he'd throw like a hundred and fifty miles an hour. I said I said almost right? So you take sixty eight you double that once day. That's accurate. I will not let this slander be spoken on my own podcast. Whatever it is. So white socks day, by the way through sixty nine which was tough to see after warming up and having a mound. I did not warm up and threw off flat ground with the hangover. So we'll see I mean, I know that I'll throw harder than him. If seventy two his max, and I threw sixty eight without warming up on flat ground. Gimme a mound. Give me a some warm pitches. And I'm blown right past the guy that both throwing ninety one. There has never been a Santa rivalry. The the answer is Jack Flaherty. Oh, I like it. Jay. About eleven strikeouts per nine last year over one hundred and fifty one innings three point three four ERA. I think it might be RA might go up a little bit. But I think the strike outs are going to remain. I think the walks might drop a little bit. But I think he might be the cardinals ace as soon as the two thousand nineteen season as far as that rotation goes on a printing basis, especially with the news that Carlos Martinez could be deployed out of the bullpen this year. Which is an interesting story to watch in and of itself. But good picks. I like your guys picks to they were pretty good. If you were let's stick with pitching. If you were a new franchise and you had to pick one of these pitchers to build your rotation around for the next fons. Who would you take in? Why Blake Snell the affirmation Aaron Nola or Jose barrios, the less? Gimme the last. I'm going Blake snow..

Football will have you every week here on Thursdays breaking down, not only the Thursday night football game, but the biggest games of the weekend because you're already doing that in prepping for that for the unbelievable show. You have the NFL matchup show on ESPN and of course the great work you do for NFL films as well. Let's start with the Thursday night or Greg eagles falcons. What are you most intrigued about in this matchup. Oh, that I'm actually intrigued with how the falcons choose to play offense with their personnel. For this reason, Nigel Brad will not play in this game, and it would seem to me that the falcons would wanna stay with base personnel quite a bit which they do. They do often play with two tight. They do play with a fullback, but I think they would want the eagles linebackers assuming the eagles play with three linebackers. They may decide to go big nickel and play Graham, the safety almost as a linebacker or Jenkins can do that as well. But I think you wanna put the eagles in that situation Ross and then line up with a lot of base personnel. Obviously, they won't do that on third nine, but I think you wanna see how the eagles are going to handle that with nine zero, Brad out of the game because the only real starting linebacker they will have out there is Jordan Hicks, their middle linebacker, and he's coming off. I believe in Killys injury. Yeah, I was gonna ask you out of the guys other than once al-shabaab Jeffrey and TIMMY Jernigan as well as Nigel, Brad, which guy hurts him the most. And it sounds like you you think it might be Brad them? I think it could be yes. The other intriguing element to this game is just what you mentioned with the eagles missing Jeffrey and MAC Hollins who will be out as well. I think that you'll see a lot of two tight end sets, and I think the rookie Dallas guttered we'll get significant snaps in this game. So that's the on that side of the ball. That's the the other element that intrigues me in this game. Totally agree. You know, Greg eagles fans are very nervous about Nick foles and the fact that he's not played well in the preseason. Do you have a read on that? I mean, he has had a history in his career of being up and down guy, a major history. There's a very wide variance in his play. I think he needs to be schemed. I think the eagles did such a good job with that and in the playoffs last year. And I think you'll see a lot of that. They'll be a major chess match. Going on here, don't forget. Teams of now had an off season all teams, but certainly the falcons have had an off season to figure out how better to defend run, pass option concepts. And I know the eagles are trying to expand those concepts as well. So I think that that's a critical dimension to this game.

"Good baseball teams in if there's a way to improve alexandroupolis is going to do it but that today you know when you go through a season like this there there have to be these little magic moments and that one was that was as entertaining baseball game as you will ever see today there was some magic moments for the cardinals on sunday courtesy of jack flared he was fantastic and that's a another team who you know you never know how quickly young talent is going to evolve and you kinda look to that cardinals rotation going into the season guys late weaver and flaherty potentially having a lot of growth for them in a short time and maybe that rotation looks a lot different old flaherty was fantastic on sunday struck out thirteen phillies and route to a five one victory so people are gonna remember flare these performance richard but i think one thing we're really gonna remember from that game is jordan hicks cardinals reliever he hit a hundred and five miles an hour on the gun twice in that in that outing and relief of flared one third inning outing and this is a guy who's got a lot of attention this year for the pure velocity he's up there in the arolla beyond they were all the chapman realm he's averaging ninety nine mile an hour plus with his fastball at the average but what stands out to me richard he struck out nine guys in twenty two innings so it's not like he's just blowing his fastball by people you know he's getting some ground balls in that that seems to be predominant route by which he's getting his out so it's not the traditional one hundred five on our fireball if you will know and i think steph cass had his him today throwing the five fastest pitches of the season so obviously on a day when flared outpitched aaron nola he was geeked up and got the last four outs but he you know he throws a hundred and he's effectively while i think that's the term for it a walked to in there's a lot going on with the cardinals right now they lose their shortstop paul d young for for weeks and they're kind of might mathies trying to figure out you know the colt long back.
