New York City announces Memorial Day rules for city's beaches and parks
"There's nothing that really answers to the description of beach weather in today's accu weather forecast but some people will be heading to the city's beaches anyway today where they will find themselves restricted as Roger stern reports Roger today's weather may attract more people than on Saturday or Sunday governor Cuomo visited Jones beach on Long Island yesterday to celebrate the new normal for people who want to enjoy the sand and the surf we're at the beach beaches in New York state state beaches are open Jones beach is sunken meadow beech hill there hills Robert Moses beach all operating at fifty percent capacity and groups have to stay six feet from each
New York City beaches open for holiday weekend, no swimming allowed
"A few days at the beach is typically a no brainer for Memorial Day weekend needless to say it is a little bit more complicated this year some beaches are open some are restricting who can go others are restricting what you can do there here to tell us where new Yorkers and new Jerseyans can go to welcome the summer wireless socially distancing is WNYC's Karen Yi and the Jake often hearts of Gothamist Karen Jake hello hi David it it it there is still so much we don't know about cope with nineteen but many epidemiologists say that with social distancing precautions in place heading to the beach does not pose a large threat for people in low risk groups Cameron let's start with you governor Murphy said beaches would re open for the holiday weekend is that right yes that's right so Murphy has said if speech is re opened they need to limit the amount of people on the beach and enforced social distancing so it's really gonna be up to each municipality to decide how to do that and what parts of the beaches or boardwalks to re open so remember not all of the beach is closed during the pandemic some have already re opened and some remain partially close and it's equally as complicated in New York City right Jake governor Cuomo joined New Jersey Connecticut and Delaware to open up the beaches but mayor bill de Blasio technically won't open up city beaches that's right David New York City is fourteen miles on public beaches are technically close what that really means is the beaches are closed to swimming sports picnics many of the social things people go to the beach for but you can still walk sit on the beach or even dip your feet into the water up to your ankles the idea is to discourage nothing Yorkers from going to the beach so it's not over crowded what about beaches on Long Island to Jones beach the Hamptons these are very popular spots for new Yorkers or they could be an option many all island beaches will be open this weekend but they're not exactly rolling out the red carpet for us New York City residents several towns including East Hampton have plans to limit or entirely banned outsiders from their shores that's led to some regional contentions of Nassau County official had to walk back in down and out of towners on Nickerson beach after my colleague Sylvia Chang points out that beaches that receive federal funding must be open to the public the state run beaches like Robert Moses in Jones beach will be open to everyone but they're restricting capacity to fifty percent and governor Cuomo says people could be turned away from parking lot as early as ten AM single parking is always a problem and beaches in both states Karen tell us about the Jersey Shore is parking to be restricted even more than usual yes so again it's gonna come down to home rule it's New Jersey right so it's gonna be up to each town since sandy hook which is run by the National Park Service is limiting parking to fifty percent and so is island beach state park which is run by the state mayors have told me that they're gonna be announcing reminders on loudspeakers there's gonna be civilian ambassadors patrolling the boardwalk there's gonna be a lot of signage but really it's gonna have to come down to trust trust that people will do the right thing and act responsibly what Jake in New York City you have reported on members of the NYPD enforcing social distancing measures in physically aggressive ways in the subways and on city streets can new Yorkers expect a large police presence on the beaches what is the plan for monitoring resource can definitely expect to see a major law enforcement presence this weekend and why PDP stale has been up thirty percent they'll be joined by parks police and thousands of social distancing ambassadors similar to New Jersey if things get too crowded the mayor says they may even put up fencing literally barricading the beaches anyone who tries to swim will be ordered out well in New Jersey some mayors are concerned about not enough police presence on the beaches Cameron that what are you hearing I spoke two point pleasant beach mayor Paul Kenitra and he's very concerned about this so his speech is partially open not the boardwalk so this means that Jenkins beach is also gonna be close but the biggest problem for him and re opening everything is that he says he can't hire the seasonal officers who normally boost up as police force during the summer because all the training academies are closed so for the things that are open for the part of each that is open he says this weekend will be a test run for whether the precautions they've implemented will work we need to see how realistic it is to have our badge checkers wearing the mask and gloves and in hot weather we need to make sure that our lifeguards are able to you know the date people and do things appropriately with the set up that we have one up one down on the lifeguard stands in with the new half the filters for their resuscitation devices so the mayor said there's really no playbook for this I mean everybody is really trying out what works for their particular beach okay so if people can solve the puzzle of finding an open beach what happens when they get there will there be open public restrooms or boardwalk restaurants open for food pickup so curbside pickup is allowed for nonessential businesses take out is going to continue for restaurants a New Jersey recently allowed to go cocktails on the public restroom issue again that's going to depend on the town whether they decide to open those or how they apply limits to that the one thing that the state is encouraging is that everyone wear a mask right and it's the same thing in New York there will be some to go through the options available re sparked beaches are is open many of the vendors on Coney Island and they'll be some bathrooms and Porta potties starting this weekend and finally you keep in mind the water's going to be fifty five degrees not exactly swimming weather even if you are out yeah I think that's gonna keep a lot of people out of the water we'll have to hear much more about how it goes this weekend WNYC's Karen Yi and the Gothamist reporter Jake often hearts thank you for joining us thanks

Coronavirus News: With NYC beaches closed, Nassau County beach will be resident-only
"With the mayor declaring New York City beaches closed for Memorial Day weekend and beyond some people in the city may have their sights set on the beaches of Long Island but it sounds your own words Jones reports city folk will not be welcome on many of those speeches Nickerson beach on the south shore will be open this weekend but only to Nassau County residents county exactly lower current we've decided to you know for the interest of the health and safety of our residents to just limit people who go to napa county residents instead officials have also voted to keep their town beaches residents only and current expects other towns to follow suit mayor de Blasio a bit disappointed at the decision we can't open our beaches we cannot take the chance of a huge number of people congregating together I mean look at Coney Island on typical beach weekend other residents only ban does not affect state run Jones beach which will be open at fifty percent
'Why We Swim' Looks For Answers In People And Places Across The Globe
"And humans came from. Dust says ECCLESIASTES DIS but Bonnie Sui us that humankind also wants sprang from end still seeks. Water why we swim is her latest book which Texas from Ponds Pools to surfers racers and a few who have survived icy currents Bonnie Soy who writes frequently for the New York Times in California Sunday magazine. Join just for more home in Berkeley California. Thanks so much for being with us. Thanks so much for having me Scott. You begin with an amazing story about a man whose name I will not chance to even try and say March Eleven nineteen eighty-four what happened on this planet. Good Liquor Thorson. He's an Icelandic fishermen and fishing trawler with his crew. It's calm waters it's cold it's forty one degrees and the boat overturns with forty one degree water within twenty to thirty minutes we die from hypothermia but he did not everyone else did and he ended up swimming six hours and when he finally got to the hospital the doctors weren't able to discern his heartbeat or read his temperature on the thermometer but he didn't show any signs of hypothermia and he was only a little bit dehydrated. He was a strong swimmer certainly but was he also saved by his own biology. He was like the story very much. Because it is this the distillation of what makes swimming so special for humans. We have to learn how to swim. we're not born knowing how to do it instinctively and yet there are sort of traces of that evolutionary past still within us that our evolutionary past that came from the sea and so with good liquor for. Thorson turns out that his body fat was two to three times normal human thickness and more solid and so he resembled a Marine Mammal. More than terrestrial mammal. And that saved him. Did you grow up feeling? Pull into the even. If it was only Jones Beach in New York I did. I mean my family origin story is at my parents met no swimming pool in Hong Kong. We grew up with swimming family and so we grew up at Jones beach in the pool. Lifeguards swim team. I just always remember feeling more comfortable and happy in the water actually than on land. I mean there's just a sense of magic that you get from being in the water and buoyancy that you just don't have on land you in this book talk to swimmers all over the world right nearby you though you you swim San Francisco Bay without a wet suit and there are people including I gather you who believe that's actually good for you in all ways it can be. I mean I have also talked to scientists and researchers who say cardiovascular risk. Don't go into sudden shock cold water because it could stop your heart that aside a wr decided there are benefits to cold water immersion. And there's been quite a bit of research in recent years where your dopamine levels go up in your over time that your cardiovascular system is strengthened and you know there are people there are things that we knew from across cultures around the world that there was a water cure there. Was you know jumping in cold? Water was good for you and jumping in hot water and then jumping into cold water and so we didn't know why exactly in the science kinda starting to catch up. What is this Brown fat you talk about in this book. Well this was really interesting. I did not know about Brown fat until I started swimming with a Dolphin Club swimmers in San Francisco Bay and so I went to ucsf to talk to the foremost researchers in Brown fat and it turns out that mammals are born with two kinds of white fat which we all know about the energy stores of our bodies and Brown fat which actually Burns and produces heat energy. We kind of start to lose it as we get older but there are ways to do what's called the Browning of white fat which is to kind of turn it into energy burning tissue. That fat is called Beige Fat. And so what? Kind of encourages. The development of beige fat is cold water exposure and exercise among other things. But those have been proven to be causing this change in our bodies. Wonder if you have any words for people who aren't able to swim these days you know. The water is a draw for us no matter what and so even if you can't get in the water if you can walk near it can look at. It can see it can You know have some what a wall Nichols calls domestic waters in your house and you know. Take about the shower. Just look at imagery watches surf movie. I mean those things. Make a difference for our souls and our the way our bodies and brains work. Click we respond to those set points in the environment and even if we can't get in the waters right now you know the ocean will be waiting for us. He just signed a deal with playground sessions nap, which is co owned by Quincy Jones beach, you how to play the piano is in service that cost ten dollars a month. Let's listen in to my conversation with Harry Connick junior here on talking tech all about learning to play the piano. So I'm wearing a playground sessions, which I know you're familiar with and it uses innovative technology that I haven't really seen before. So explain have a piano works. How reading music works. They also have instructors I'm one of the instructors takes people from. I mean as basic as a possibly gets, you know, talking to people who have never played don't think they can play don't think they have any musical ability, all and walks them through some very basic fundamental concepts of playing all the way through some more intermediate and advanced concepts. So it uses a whole bunch of different ways to engage people. And I gotta tell you. It's it's extremely cool. It's it's kind of a dictating and you kinda learn without realize you're learning. So as it's it's a it's a very exciting new frontier that I'm proud to be a part of in a nutshell is basically giving you numbers for the notes and in knowing that that might see is one in my e may be three or five or whatever. And just associating those numbers with the note. Is that where you begin that's part of it for sure. But I even go back or the map some people, you know, look at the piano keyboard, and they see, you know, all of those black and white notes, and they are intimidated by that I talk about the fact that there's only twelve of those notes in just a block of notes that repeats, you know, over and over again in. I mean, we go back to to those kinds of basics in in like even people that I know that I've seen that particular lesson. You know, you have to assume that most people love music almost everybody loves music in most people know nothing about it. And in you have to you have to remember that like when I was a kid. I knew nothing about music when I was three or four years old, and I was experienced I got I got a chance to had a lot of exposure to, you know, other than listening to the radio most people don't really know how it works. And if you break it down to a really really prime. Mary and fundamental level with the type of enthusiasm invert of that that, you know, somebody like me has I think it's possible to you know, fire some of those synapses in people's brains and get them to think about it in a way, they haven't thought about it before let me quickly ask you the name of my podcast is called talking tech. Are you a tech enthusiasts? You tell me what you bring with you on tour. What are some of the gadgets you like to play with? Well, you know, I I love technology. I got a patent on a system of reading music about probably nineteen or so years ago, and we haven't used sheet music on my bandstand, since then we we have a we developed a software that allows on musicians to read off of the screen, and you know, to change, you know, at the on a dime. Really whatever song. I I need him to play. So, you know, people are starting to catch on to that technology in you know, I'm I write all of my scores on on. My computer so technology plays a really big part in in. What I do. I'm Jefferson Graham with USA day. You have been listening to talking tech. Thanks to Harry Connick. "Your way to see Santana. Doobie brothers at Jones beach, August the twenty fifth Earl rights football weekend. We're going to talk about the greatest football movies of all time. We welcome in Joe new Myra movie Gaba. Joe you have a new release to talk about I got one that's an incredibly topical football movies are always this will be it's called Arctic. Well, there you go that makes right? It's actually a documentary about what happened yesterday. No. It's actually an adventure movies. Actually, pretty good did adventure movie about a guy stranded in the Arctic after a plane crash. There's very little dialogue and he struggles to survive, and then a rescue helicopter comes to help them end that crashes, and then he has to kind of pull one of the survivors from that helicopter crash along with them to through the Arctic to try and get to safety and essentially a man versus nature kind of. We've I love that kind of stuff. It's like cast away or the Robert Redford film always laws where he's on a boat or even like one hundred twenty seven. Hours where James Franklin choppers arm off? I love this kind of stuff. I'm always like a guy with no dialogue trapped in nature. I'm all gave it three stars. It's a lot fun. It may not be the movie you wanna watch though when it's nine degrees out or negative four with the wind chill. Anybody? We know in the movie the guy is actually a guy who is the villain in the JAMES BOND film, casino royale, and also in doctor strange is a Danish attorney mas- Mickelson. So nobody really know. But it's like, you know, there's kind of no dialogues. Okay. Doesn't matter. You just kinda watching this guy. But it's actually a lot of fun. You know, it's a it's a survival movie. But like I say, maybe not the one that to escape the cold whip. But it how many stars for Arctic again give it three. Yeah. Yeah. I liked it. All right best football movies. All the time. You're not gonna give us Rudy. You know, sadly, I have to throw Rudy. And they're letting you know what I mean, either for my money. These are not maybe not the best football movies. I mean, I love Brian saw when I was a kid. I always movie that the TV movies. So you can't cut that. But these are my favorites. So you know football off the top of my head. I love having can wait. And it's a two that was Warren Beatty. That was a good movie. It wasn't necessarily a football movie. But it was good movie. Right. But the crucial part of actually think like, you know, it's it's football scenes are shot so beautifully, and it's really a crucial part of the movie, that's really fun. And so as a football movie, I you know, it may not be in there. But I love the football in heaven can wait anyway. Very cool. Yeah. And then, of course, the longest yard the original. We'll be which is terrific anything where you've got, you know, Richard jaws keel, and they're wanting to close line one of the guys I. The kid and that sort of that rag tag group of guys getting together. And then for the obviously the actual football movies. I like, you know, people give any given Sunday a lot of heat, it's olive stone. 'cause it's fictionalized, but I'd like it because we're gonna have all of those elements of the of the game in it has got owners. It's got the media. It's got obviously the coach play Pacino with his great speech about you know, football's a game of inches, and it's all about what's in front of you. That was Cameron Cameron Diaz is the owner. That's right me. Fox is the quarterback. Yeah. I like that one. I think it's a lot of fun. Like, I don't know if I saw it from beginning to end. Joe my favorite is remember the titans, Denzel Washington, Denzel Washington, which is great to a lot of people like we are Marshall two, but you'd like tighten. Yeah. I was going up. Yeah. Lights, of course. Because it's kind of I mean, it takes place. No, Desa, Texas, and it kind of has a nice based on true story. Also. And it kind of has a sense of what football means to a small town, which is obviously what it means to America. And it's sort of a great sort of thing and the and the running back in there who's got who's injured and kind of has played his last game. I like that. 'cause they have the sense of of what I actually would say that's one of my favorites. And then I got to throw in Rudy. Because even though every it's now become a cliche and people chanting Rudy Rudy Rudy that moment when Sean and runs out and the two personal thing. You know, I think that's it really kinda gets to the emotion and the and the the what it means to every single person to kind of be on that field one more. And I don't know if you've seen it or not it's the replacements Gene Hackman seen it right about the ordinary guys gave me. That was really good movie movie. Now, I my memory fails wasn't there a movie where there were threatening the Super Bowl, and there was a blimp in the movie Sunday Sunday right from seventy seven or it was Robert Shaw. Yeah. Exactly giant blimp. In fact, it's got a great poster of the bloom kind of going over to the Super Bowl stadium. Yeah. Yeah. That's a fun one too. But I mean, I sort of feel like for the fun stuff. I would throw in Warren Beatty is having can wait. But that was good. Like football stuff in any given Sunday. Or or we are marshals a great one. Yeah. Or Friday night lights with our movie guy. Joe new Meyer, the W R movie minute. And Joe before we run, I just it's just remarkable to me. You don't want to think of sports movies is a bunch of great baseball movies. And I you know, I like the the natural and field of dreams, you realize how many of football movies there are and were right. Well, you know, I mean football for me is the more cinematic sport. I like baseball more is a sport. But football. I mean, it's made for the movies. I mean, everything from the cross cutting to them, you know, watching a pass go down the field which actually in heaven has got a great one. Or even you know. I mean, Newt rock the all American have moments like win one for the gipper. Like, those kind of thing there's no comparable line like that in baseball movies. There's no crying in baseball. There's no crew is Tom Hanks. That's right. League of their own. But you're right. You're right. I forgot about the rock anything. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. You'll football. I just feel like there's and there's sort of a teamwork element to football which not that there isn't in baseball. But for the movie it really satisfies that game. What what what needs a great movies basketball basketball needs a their own version of that never had a great? They've had some goofy comedies. Yeah. They never really had a good one. Yeah. They never had a good one. I mean break with Gabe. Kaplan doesn't quite contract because hockey has a miracle. That's right hockey miracles. Great movie. Right. Was a great movie. Yeah. Yeah. And it has the same kind of thing. Right. Kind of rough and tumble and very visual. Obviously, very Connecticut. Yeah. Exactly. Joe new Meyer bringing out words like kinetic on a Friday, Joe. All right, talk to you. John Mayer, our W O R movie minute guy. But that's a surprise me. When you start thinking of a football movies were because he's just I don't know. The romance of baseball. I guess I always grew up as a baseball fan more than anything else. But I think football lends itself better to visualization. Whereas, you know, baseball's kind of static more gritty. Yeah. Okay. There you go. Hey coming up next. We're gonna have open phones Friday. Yeah. Let's open a phone lines. Anything you wanna talk about what's on your mind. What do you want to get off your chest? You wanna talk about the wall? You wanna talk about the this restaurant banning maga- hats, anything it's your call. Call us eight hundred three to one zero seven ten. Hi, I'm Brian Scudamore from one eight hundred gotjunk, I'm sorry. I've changed my mind. This junk is too weird to let anyone see. We love weird junk. I think you might be underestimating how weird this is. Is it weirder than four hundred wedding dresses weirder than twenty five thousand 'electronic cigarettes? My junk is definitely weirder than that. Respectfully, ma'am, everyone thinks that their junk is weird. Well, my junk is weird for real. I want picked up several thousand cans of tuna. Are you making that up a promise, I'm not, ma'am? "Joined by one of our favorites. And the listeners really like him to former governor David Paterson when it comes to a politico people just consider him a good guy and a fair guy. He's a nice guy. That's too isn't. He. He's a liberal. But he's he's a nice guy. No. But he's also I think he's fair I do on both sides, and he'll join us around seven forty and about an hour from now if you like Santana and the Doobie brothers. They're teaming up this summer on a tour, and we've got some tickets for you in about an hour. You'll be able to see them at Jones beach on August, the twenty fifth will play name that tune where we did last week the week before for the who will do it for Santana and a Doobie brothers about the eight twenty five so about an hour from now. So the Super Bowl coming up. You know, I I saw the today show they're gonna do a story on Super Bowl commercials enough for Super Bowl. I think that that that ship has sailed I think there's nothing you can do in a commercial other than either shooting somebody on camera or having naked women. I mean, there's nothing that's going to get any attention. What what's the big deal? If someone's going to do in a commercial that people are going to talk about the Super Bowl commercials. Most people are at parties and don't pay attention to the commercials anyway, and they come out ahead of time. So. That you can watch them online if you wanted to. And it's interesting that I think it's coke. Isn't it? Coke is not going to do a commercial during the game. But they're doing it right before kickoff. So they'll they'll they'll get coverage. I got to change our contests. We have a contest coming Friday for all of us on the staff and one of the bets Vegas was taking was which commercial show up. I during the game Coker, Pepsi. So so we know what's gonna leave it in there. But I didn't realize you you knew this. I was gonna make it a trick question. But you know, the answer. So let me I'll have one advantage over Riedel. No less. Well, he's already. He's already put in his vote. Really? I really had to every sheet. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I think he has Joe Nemeth winning the MVP. I got to see some of his answers. So excited about this game. I know you hate the patriots. In fact, the post on the back page today calls them the hatred, but they're back where back that's what they like to say. You know, I I don't like the pretty boy, I I think the posts sums it up pretty brave quarterback in the coaches stupid hoodie. America is sick of the pats where they had a big rally yesterday in Foxborough both teams had rallies. Obviously the patriots. Got covered right. Yeah. They both got coming. So we have a little bit from both Tom Brady at the the patriots rally yesterday been so blessed obviously being here for as long as I have and to play with so many, great, teammates and coaches to represent this team and organization, and obviously to represent you guys is what it's all about. So I can't thank you enough. It is remarkable remarkable game last week the city, especially that overtime drive as soon as the patriots. If the game goes over time and the patriots win the toss as our buddy water wolf would say you could turn your TV off right there. By the way, Warner is gonna join us fried green Super Bowl preview from the man himself. Doesn't bother you that they cheat so much. I mean, you know, you got deflate gate they were caught spying December. You know, it's like Nixon he didn't have to have Watergate to win the election and Brady and those guys don't have to cheat to win an even older those a little play these pick plays at there really are. Yes. Very edge sided,.
