Whether I mean that comes to fruition, where Ackland is the second overall pick or Matthew Veneers is I'm not entirely sure, but I'm sure there are teams out there that do value a guy like William Echlin over a guy like Matthew Veneers just because William Macklin last year in the Swedish Hockey League, playing in a professional hockey league over in Europe started off really, really strong in his seasons with Juror Gardens. Wenger Gardens is Djurgarden. Yes, it's an there aren't all right team. They're not. They're not a top level team, you know, like some of the other teams over there, but You know he was able to contribute real well generate play. Really be a creative playmaker and a good passer. And, you know, it also helps when you're playing with a guy like Alexander Holtz, who was the first round pick of the Devil's the past 2020 draft, so You know, and Matthew veneers. I think that he is a very good You know, to a center. He's 100% of the time he's going, You know, it's just Don't know. Some teams might see William. I mean, I personally don't have William Ekland over Matthew. But here's I think Matthew veneers is over William Echlin, but I could easily see where some people would say. You know, William Macklin, I I think he might turn out to be a better player than Then Matthew being here is just in terms of offensive production in playmaking. Just because I don't think ba nears is necessarily that Premier playmaker or anything like that. He's just a really good two way player with a good drive to his game. He could still generate offense, but the he's one of the million players that's going to comparing himself to Jonathan Tapes. It was chronic immune Response syndrome, where I just couldn't quite recover and my immune system was reacting to everything that I did any kind of stress anything that I would do throughout the day. Just there's always kind of stress response. So Took some time. That was the frustrating part was not really knowing when or how we're going to get over the hump that is the captain is back. Jonathan Tapes in a video released today talked about the health situation that kept him off the ice for all of last season. I want to ask Dr Kevin most about that and a lot more. Kevin is the chief medical officer at Northwestern Medicine, Central to Page Hospital and frequent co host of the Afternoon news. He joins us again. Doctor. Welcome back. Steve, How are you doing? I'm well, Thank you. So tell me what you make of this Jonathan Taves announcement today. It's interesting. You know, when you look at that illness in the spectrum of that illness, um a lot of it is actually associated with exposures to toxins into things along those lines. And then all the way to the other extreme, where he is where his body never got enough time to rest, and the immune system, as we found out through Covid is very unique and very unusual. What we don't like is when the immune system turns on against ourselves like it does for rheumatoid arthritis like it does for Lupus, so the immune system Although it is great in keeping out infectious diseases and illnesses, we often have these other illnesses where it goes a little haywire and in the case of Jonathan Tase in the case of people with arthritis. That we need to be able to curtail that back and try to get it back and in the think that it's supposed to be in, so was he just sort of exhausted from playing so much hockey or what brings this on? Yeah, You know, I mean, the stress on the body can be many things that can be mental. It can be physical. It can be psychological. So the stress that we have with our body is really bearing. If you look at someone like him, not only did he have large physical stress, I mean, there certainly is the psychological stress of being a great athlete in playing so Individuals like this are certainly set up for more illnesses, even something as simple as infectious mono. You know, your immune system gets beaten down. So not unusual to or not unexpected actually to hear this, and hopefully now his body has gotten a chance to reset that immune system back to where it is where it should be, where it's looking for appropriate things to attack instead of attacking itself. Well, that's the question then, isn't it? Is this irrecoverable situation or Is it something that he risks recurring. Yeah, you know, I mean, it's the chance, and that's why the word chronic is there instead of acute acute meaning it's happening right now. Chronic means that it's happening and couldn't happen for a longer period of time. Not a lot is known as far as the study of this and how to treat it, So certainly they probably looked at putting putting them on steroids and tried a bunch of everything, but it's not like Oh, Here, take this medication and you're gonna be fine for the rest of your life. I think there's going to be a balance of activity. Diet stress, physical stress as well as everything else again. Keep that immune system backwards supposed to be. And you know the questions were whether or not this might have been caused by Covid 19. I mean the Hawks and everyone. Did a remarkable job of protecting his privacy through all this, but we don't know about that, right? We don't know. Certainly, we don't tell me like I said, this can be caused by something as simple as mold. So certainly we know that Covid reached havoc with a lot of our immune systems and actually does Damage to our immune system. So, uh, certainly be speculation to say what actually caused this. He probably doesn't know nor do his. I'm sure he has unbelievably phenomenal physicians. They may not know what the causes and now it's just how do we get him back to the healthy side? How do we keep his immune system acting the way it's supposed to act? More on a regular bait on a regular, uh, fighting disease instead of fighting their own body. Well, it's a happy day. It was so nice to wake up to hear about that. Video, and I can just imagine how frightening it must have been for him, You know, world class athlete to not quite know what's going on. Okay, Let's move on a lot of covid questions. Doctor, including there was a headline earlier this week. About the fact that now they think Moderna and Pfizer might be effective. Long term in a booster not might not be required. Did I read that correctly? You did. You know it's so interesting because we're seeing studies coming out left and right on boosters. But this one was very encouraging, saying that for we're talking potentially two year, three year, five year protection because what we're seeing now, Steve is that we're getting more data. On people who got this vaccine very early. So we have people now who are in that clinical trial a year almost a year ago, and now we're still studying them and looking boy. The immune response does not seem to be dropping much, and that's exactly what we want to see, because as it wanes, that's going to be the trigger for A booster shot. So if we know that the levels are still saying hi, and those individuals are not getting hospitalized, two things we know it's working against the delta. "Surprise that the Blackhawks weren't prepared for what Carolina was going to throw out. And maybe that's a little bit of an experience for some of the guys on the roster of the Blackhawks when you when you have a guy like Jonathan tapes in there, and you sent him out for the first shift of a big period, you know that he knows The magnitude of that he gets the job done. I think they kind of scrambled a little bit. I'll give blanket and some credit, too. He gave up those two goals quickly within 50 seconds of of the opening face off of the second period and was kind of battle and I think some of his confidence there but regrouped a little bit. Up there right after that, able to make some saves that Carolina was thrown some some good opportunities towards him on made some big saves towards the end, and that one with 23 seconds to go on. Ah, who was a big one as you head into the third period, all tied up, and once again the Blackhawks. We're seeing that face offs are becoming a factor here in this game like the last game against Carolina, If you look out, you know where the Blackhawks we're looking down the middle. They were looking for somebody that could come in and take some face offs and Jonathan Tape's Was going to be penciled in obviously to that equation, as was Kirby Doc, who needed to be better. But you know, in the first period, the Blackhawks were it 57%. And after this one, they're down 35%. They got just drilled again. I think that that it shows the character of a good team like Carolina, able to in some ways, flip that switch and turned it on. They knew that they are much better team which you saw in the first period. They had to stay out of the penalty box. They got a little bit lucky in the second period with The absence of one lineman. They certainly had too many men on the ice, and that would have been an easy pick off for the linesman. If Tony Sericolo was out on the ice, you got one linesmen to referees, So They didn't pick up that too many men on the ice and that would have given the Blackhawks unearthly opportunity on the power play ties to regain some momentum. you're probably gonna be about a playoff spot if you pick up six seven point six or eight points on that trip and and that the fact they only picked up a few things started to spiral then obviously the we saw a lot of trade happened last week where a lot of defenseman got moved in and you wondered if the Blackhawks were gonna pull the trigger on America if it's been deleted get out in front of that but they stayed patient and I don't know if they were trying to package and Eric Gustafson with another asset like a robin letter to try all the packaging of the return and try to get that first round pick that they're covering but unfortunately they weren't able to make it happen Charlie you mentioned letter there and I think a lot of hawks fans are wondering he he will reportedly he was willing to consider a three year deal with the hawks now you know I don't know if we've seen confirmation of that report but it's out there that robin Lehner was willing to potentially talk a three year deal with the hawks do you think that something that was truly in their interest or do you think they just don't want to be locked up long term with robin Lehner due to maybe a quirky history to say the least well I I'm not sure about it because robin Lehner is on record saying that he didn't want to take a discount like you felt like you wanted to be paid market value and and he deserves that what whatever he was asking for he deserves what he wants and if the Blackhawks were gonna offer him he offered what he wanted like he had every right to take it to and and has every right to take it to the summer and get exactly what he's looking for the the fact that if you know the Hawkins did offer a three year deal letter would have been willing to take lasted it do a three year deal I feel like the team would have pulled the trigger on it because I I don't know necessarily if they were looking to try a lot of money and term to to robin letter because that's just not exactly how they operate in it we see all around the NHL now teams are very reluctant to give big contracts to goaltender than in the Florida Panthers are seeing it right now they they find Sir David Gonski two an eight year contract worth ten point five million dollars and he has been performing this season so I think maybe that's also what is scaring off the hawks and wanted to have that type of security with the goaltender another couple minutes where's Charlie Roumeliotis from the Blackhawks insider at NBC sports Chicago the guys they get back for a for a letter is is that yes they need to get some names back or is to Bangor to be their back up for the rest of the season or what you know what's going on yeah I imagine so I read in Markham Sudan will be the Blackhawks is back up you know barring Jonathan three Duncan Keith those core players I don't blame them for being frustrated like they want to win in Chicago but the the problem is if they don't want to go somewhere else to win another ring like their soul that and they have no movement clauses in their contracts read that they want to spend the rest of your career here in Chicago and they want to win the Stanley Cup again in Chicago so I don't see that it man it would be if thirteen is out of date senior retired Black Hawk that it wouldn't feel right if they if they went somewhere else Charlie one last quick one for you what is the biggest need for the hawks this offseason to try and get them back on track and into the playoff conversation next year yes hi it's tough because you kind of want to see how this you know they've been battered by injuries particularly that of the blue line with Calvin Han and Brent Seabrook and then Andrew Shaw you know I would I would sail and it is those guys need to get healthy first and then you want to see how your developments are going with Adam vocalist and Kirby dach but to me ideally like you need you need another top six winger like you need another top six four they have Jonathan Tate and Kirby docking Dylan Strome and and obviously Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat but they don't have really that photo type scoring winger that can help balance out the lines and I'm not saying that the Blackhawks have it all made on their depth on their defensive group because they tell but you look at the reality is they have five guys under contract for at least the next two seasons after that and that's not even including Adam vocalist and potentially Ian Mitchell so I want to say a top four defenseman but it just didn't seem feasible because all the they have all
