"I know what you just said. The opposite of what i hear most the time. Obviously i'm not an offer owner. I have a business that helps offer owners. But i hear test test test test test test. That and now you're saying is you know obviously if something works continue with it and then discreet another offer so for me. That's very logical because if you have let's say you know depending on what level your businesses out obviously but if you have a whole bunch of buyers these are people who are bought from you sell them more stuff. They already like what you sold them. So creating a not another offer for your pool of buyers is probably going to be a lot more worthwhile than trying to test the control. That's already maybe doing pretty pretty well and and you're just kind of trying to game the system. But i find that really interesting. I love to hear different. Perspectives of like how people grow their businesses. And what they do. But that's that's genius especially when you start getting even to. Let's say the six figures a month level you got a good pool of buyers and for me for my business like i have a lot of cold leads you know. We have a lot of leads because we have like a lot of seo stuff going on whatever but my best buyers are always referrals or people who have started other businesses from the main business. And that's where. I get the best people to work with and the people who spend you know. They don't spend money for with us but you know that maximize their processing with us. So why reinvent the wheel. Why not do what works which is ask for referrals or ask for you. Know if people want you know are buying one program. When gets her program. We'll maybe they want something to hone in on us specific skill and i don't know anything about music so i won't sound like what four but It's it's super interesting to hear that is that you know An every entrepreneur has a different way and their secret sauce. I love that. that's your secret sauce. And that's what you know Helps you get there in terms of you know talking about testing stuff and working through different offers and so forth. Is there anything in terms of technology because this is always a question that i was wonder when people have these like super successful offers and they have teams and so forth. What is the technology behind us that you're like this piece of software. This is awesome stuff. This is you know everybody needs this for tracking this or whatever. The case is so. I'm just curious at everybody listening. We're not promoting anything. Nobody's paying us. There's no affiliate links. Were just chatting. Saw lead jonathan. Tell us his favorite stuff that he uses. So i i guess. I have a contrarian approach on a lot of points especially in our marketing but i honestly love to. I would love to not use any. I don't i don't care the the least amount of stuff or software or whatever that we can use to accomplish something the better because it's simpler. It's just to me. It's not what the tech isn't what matters it's again at all. Always always always comes down to the offer. This is something..

"Let's say for example dump creative versus say. This one has potential. Obviously there's numbers behind it but sometimes you feel strongly about something and you. You work along with your intuition. But i'm curious why creative has stayed to be. You know your number one. And how often do you change. Creatives to make your deceive. you can beat your controls. So that's the question and there's a couple of different answers here so you know. Honestly how often do we change creative. My my philosophy is as little as possible. I don't want to do extra work right. If a phrase that. I afraid that that we say all the time is in what it comes to media buying and if it works let a work while i mean you could turn beat it. I personally never never been able to beat that particular page but if it works work and then one thing that i learned from mark ford is he said this kind of a a big idea based on one thing that he said but when it comes to testing testing offers he said mark says tested things that scream. Not the things that whisper. And we've all heard if you've been in marketing or optimization or funnels or whatever for any length of time we've all heard test the color test the headline test all that kind of stuff and the reality is like here. You can get games doing that. You can give you can double your conversions headline tests. Does it happen often. no again you do. Yes but the thing is. How much effort does it take to do all that like. Where's the line of diminishing returns and if we talk about testing the things that stream a very easy obvious example as let's say we have one sales page and instead of changing the headline it's a it's a. It's an offer for a pair of shoes if we're selling. Let's say a pair of shoes to people who are somewhere on some remote island and they don't even wear shoes. you think that offers going to convert very well. No because they don't want us but if you like cloth or something or with spears or you know whatever they use we'll of course your results are just gonna take completely chain. You're gonna completely skyrocket. The point here is that you can test headlines. And you can't optimize and i think you should to a point however if you zoom out and you think about let's say you have one offer and maybe the one offers doing really really great and you could spend a week two weeks launch a year trying to optimize off are trying to boost ayovi trying to boost the conversions etc and again to determine extent. I think he should but was worth paying attention to more is. What's going to boost your rear results. More having an offer where you're gonna. He's a headline. Get a thirty percent boost at most or just simply having another having another offer like nice a great phrase that i love from i got for my mentor roger hamilton. Which by the way. Nobody has read the book wink wink wink. And grow rich by roger hamilton. I highly recommend that you can get it for free. Google media but he says don't add complexity multiply simplicity..

How did you get so lucky. You know it's the perfect industry is perfect this as the perfect that and that's just not true. I mean the truth. Is i dropped out of grad school twice. I have a degree in mechanical engineering. I went to grad school for materials engineering absolutely hated it and i dropped out and then i happened to go to another program for it was kind of like an program disguised as in the engineering school. Somehow i don't know how. The director of the program was an entrepreneur. And at the time. I had been reading like four hour work week. And that's when all that those kind of coming out. And i started reading about blogs and making money online and all that i wasn't doing any research school was reading like richdad board in the lab that i was supposed to be doing research and i went to the second semester of the second program. That was a went to the director. He became kind of like my first mentor. He was the first person that i met in real life. That read books like self-development books and business books and long story short. I pulled him aside the second the first day of the second semester and we walked down the hall before we started class and i was like look man. I've been playing music for a long time. I've been researching business. And i used to do the whole thing about cutting people's yards cutting people cutting the grass for money and all that and i talked to him for a while. And it's like you know. I think i think i can start teaching guitar. Because it's the skill that have already have and obviously there's a market there. I mean people take guitar lessons and they have for years and years..

"And he said most people go to their graves where he's actually said. Most people die with their music still locked up inside them and because of music education. one point. no. That's that's the reason i think so ultimately like i said we can talk about the the bigger vision long-term and how we're going to change all this but the underlying philosophy of what we're doing is music language. I without having to learn an instrument without having to learn what most people think of as music and therefore it's a lot easier people can express themselves. They get excited about it and we all know that you know. Music in general is is like therapy. brings people together. It allows you to de stress after a long day. Or it kind of marks It's almost like anthems throughout your life. You know that one song was used to listen to with x. group of friends in high school. It's it's everybody feels that so if everybody can access it well as a whole musical well i mean i i agree with that and i agree with exactly what you said with the you know. Music is hard. I remember when we were doing music in high school and stuff. They're like well if you're good in math than you're gonna learn music so you already just disqualified everybody. That doesn't consider themselves good. Math and i was good in math personally. And i still couldn't figure out what the hell is. This is like. I can't follow any of stuff and my teacher did think i was quite talented at the recorder. I did it for two years and it was. It was actually as geeky as this sounds. I loved it. i really loved it. I used to ride my mom now. Because i used to practice it and stuff like that but they did give a lot of you know like if you're good at math or if you're this or if you're that there was so many steps to say like This is what you need to be..

"Seven figure. A month owner offer owner We have john's built a really cool course on About music and guitar playing I'll let jonathan give us a little bit more information about all of the guitar stuff. But i just did want to mention how we met john how we connected And how. I think you're brilliant entrepreneur and You're you're just really killing So johnson and i met through. We met through copy accelerator. I guess you had some some processing questions or some payment questions which are my favorite. You know obviously my favorite topic and we were able to connect you there And i'm always happy to hear from you and hear about your successes and so forth. So can you tell us a little bit about your program and Just kind of what's what's been keeping busy since cova starks. I know that your program really during the covid era. So i think people would be interested in hearing that first of all. It's awesome to be here. Claverie getting a chance to talk conform to it regarding the kobe thing. The first thing that comes to mind is actually cinder vinegar. Tara said that they had their record year. They sold mortgage tarisa than any other year in history last year. So you know when everybody's locked up at home. They have their guitar on the corner or some. They've already they've they've always wanted to do. You know i guess they just whip out like atari and start you know trying to buy programs online and figure out how to play. I guess so awesome. Yeah what about the actual program itself. We have several different. I guess you'd say programs depending on what somebody's interested in what they're struggling with and what they want to be able to do on guitar. But the main thing i think that kind of underpins everything that we do is just in general the core philosophy. And if you listen to music which i've never met a person who doesn't listen to music. Been you their songs that you like. And their songs that you don't like and the difference between the song like in the songs that you don't like is literally how how it makes you feel the ones that make you feel good. You wanna keep listening to because it makes you feel good ones that you know..

"To you and me was a dream only a dream. And it came back to you and and I asked a lot of our guests. What do you like What you listening to? And Jonathan said every heaven more be. I've never heard of Kevin more b in my life, but I like this song because it has a really beautiful Ford pickup in it during his now Johnson boy. Usually, Jonathan, we talk about vital space is the things you guys you're doing with that. But today we're gonna talk about raising money to help people pay the utility bills and welcome to the show. Welcome back. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Well, thanks for the idea about Kevin More B. I'll have to listen to more. Okay. Um so You guys were trying to help you guys were raising money. Tonto do help people who might be evicted on death in the end of the month. Hopefully, this federal bill this $900 billion covert relief bill will take effect and the president will sign it. And then the eviction deadline that the eviction Moratorium will be extended out to January. The 31st so maybe a little bit a little bit of reprieve, but people also have have you need to pay there. Like heat and light and stuff like this, So tell us about what you're doing. So I mean, the housing component is something the federal government hopefully conduce for our people here who need help, and it's really large topic that's hard to get a grasp on. And so this weekend, one of our donors reached out to me and sent this really feel good article about Ah Florida man who paid the utility bills of 100 people. And that got me thinking that's really a manageable thing. Sort of help with people behind on utilities, and I reached out to cure a Coachella at the city who manages to connect network which is or Let people access help through our city on Dad, how many people are behind on their bills, and she could just pull it up. She looked it up, and it was 577 people on Monday, and 24 more people requested help over the night, So it's up to 602 today. And they were averaging about $300 each and so we set the goal of $125,000 to be able to clear all those requests, and that's what we're working towards. We've already had $20,000 donated. And I'm trying to deliver this as a Christmas present to Santa Fe residents. People don't need Via what Vital faces, D'accord. It was the fastest way for us to get involved and get this working. So we used a nonprofit that I founded and for every dollar donated will go directly towards paying this. These bills. And so when you go to www dot vital spaces dot ward, there'll be a pop up that says, Donate to the Connect Utility fund and don't eat there. 100% secure. Yep, absolutely any right off available? Yes, we are. Five a one C three organization so it's fully tax deductible and we will send you the notification instantly. Fourth donation on But like I said, it's just It was a really short tangible thing. I could think my teeth into because so many of the problems facing us Seem too big and too large. They seem like they're insurmountable. But this is like The city can come together and actually pay off the heating utility bills of its neighbors and residents for each other, because I know some people did really well this year and hopefully we should spread that and other people are really hurting. And the idea is this is just a really Pretty tangible way to make an impact before the holidays and help people out. All right, most importantly, people running who in the hell is this guy? So your furniture maker you also found in this vital spaces thing And you? You take vacant buildings. On the turn Me over to artist for workspaces. Maybe a combination of work and living spaces and maybe selling spaces on do you been doing this? You actually opened up some storefronts out of the out of the out at the mall, the outlet mall. Ah, And as far as I know, I can say that Jonathan Boyd is an honest human being. Yeah, I think I am. Yeah, but you know, that's what I know about. It's all right. Yeah, but in business studio a bunch of times Yeah. Vital spaces has been providing studio space for almost two years. Now, toe artists in Santa Fe and people can apply at vital spaces that Warg and basically we negotiate with property owners to find buildings that are empty for whatever reason, and then we temporarily occupy them. And offer studio space presentation space and display space so that artists who are struggling and couldn't normally afford market rate rents here can have space to work and live here. Are you still making furniture? I just stopped making a bed to hop on the phone with you. Okay, so that would be a yes because the people who work with would make furniture are trustworthy. Salt of the earth kind of people. The once again, um vital spaces dot org is the place you go. It's also the nonprofit puts artists in places but you can go there to donate money. If you want to help out people who might be faced with losing gas or electricity, things like that. Yeah, All the people came. All the people we've identified, came through the connect network, which is the network that the city of city and county of San Today set up to be able to get resource is two people who need them. And so if anybody needs help, they should be looking at Connect Network, which is Santa Fe n. M dot gov backslash connect on Deacon Google Connect Santa Fe and it comes up to and then they connect you to resource is and that's how we've identified. These 600 people who need help paying their utility bills. And so I absolutely encourage others. If they need that help, Theo, get in touch there is this opening the door is their deadline. Work. I'm trying to raise this.

You know, looking Tio if I tap the cultural and institutional knowledge when we first that we formed this curatorial committee to help guide us in our selection process, right when we began and we were hoping to tap the many different voices in the institutions of our city, and I think we're now thinking about also expanding the curatorial committee to just conclude Mohr Artists and more of the grassroots elements of the community that we support. "A vital spaces and Jonathan Boyd is here from vital space to Jonathan good afternoon how are you today doing great thanks for having me Richard all right this is a really cool really cool no non profit here in Santa Fe Kinney K. kind of describe to us what the mission of vital spaces is the mission of vital spaces is to make use of under utilized buildings meaning any empty building throughout the whole city that is vacant for whatever reason redevelopment for lease for sale or just empty and then turn those into opportunities to create affordable spaces for artistic community to work show and connect okay how long have you been in existence we are in existence coming up on one year and we have done a lot in that one year all right so you recently signed a lease for a building in the midtown campus area and everybody you know lot of people are gone well how can they do that but it's basically a short term lease until the development begins correct so that's why it's worked so we are not doing what a lot of people approach the city for a lot of projects on the Middletown campus and the city shied away from a lot of those projects because they were looking for permanent homes and I think the city was reticent to work with anyone in the idea of getting a black eye when kicking them out when that would inevitably happen and part of our mission statement is the temporary nature of what we do so are permanence is through our rotation around the city in many locations and that really appealed to everyone in the city understanding that we are directly interim we are addressing this time not thinking about what's happening in two three or five years from now you have not actually put on an attorney on retainer to sue the city when they try exactly because I mean that is the nature of what you guys do you kind of the itinerant vagabond artist advocate is essentially right exactly I mean there's a lot of components to what we do because it not only ties into helping artistic community but it also ties into a city vibrancy project because empty spaces are no good for anybody right anybody wants the downtown and sees an empty storefront wonders why that is and so that's part of the project is saying let's use this space there's no reason it needs to be empty and it really works for everyone in the sense that not only are the artists given space to work or show their work but it also works for building owners I mean a lot of problems the city has had with the campus has been because they are holding empty buildings and nobody sees a leak nobody sees a water main no heater line right or whatever it is which applies to many other buildings they've occupied on a temporary basis you're there you're kind of a caretaker absolutely all right so what building and in the midtown campus and who's going to I mean kind of give us a description of what's going to happen there so we are working on the southwest annex of the library it was the fine arts gallery so for those familiar when you're facing the Fogelson library it's on the right and then the four buildings on the left which is a hundred eighty seat theater like lecture hall rom and then the focus on libraries right there so we are right now working to put up four to six foot temporary dividers and create the studio space because it really was a gallery space light open floor plan so we'll have eight working artist studios the space and we're also really looking at a lot of educational partnerships to be able to host educational programming throughout the summer given that we are so closely tied in there with the schools when do you intend to occupy it we are occupied you're in it we're in it we have you working on we are working on it we cleared it out just yesterday of all the things and moved into the other storage buildings around the campus that are in there and we are just waiting because it's a city owned building we had to permit through this eight for these temporary dividers and so we're waiting on that permit and then we will have our artists in there hopefully in a couple weeks Jonathan Boyd is our guest on copying culture from vital spaces founder and director vital spaces I'm Richard easier hosted in copying culture all right so you guys don't you get you waste no time basically sign a lease got some providers are going to move in eight artists will occupy the space exactly have you already started identifying these artists have you had some sign up do you have room for more so this is the last time I came on the show with you was to talk about the open call for entry for artists to apply and that's that vital spaces dot org and Jill is still it's it's a rolling entry and our core curatorial committee which is composed of curators and many great organizations the o'keefe we have aerial protect we have Joanne frac from site we have best Murphy from McAllen we have amber don Baer of my A. I. A. all review the court they applications quarterly goal but apply anytime please do that vital spaces dot org and so we have a list of people accepted already from the last quarterly application and probably waiting list we do yeah so great potentially now they have a room we well I mean we turned up this building in the last few months and we've got our eyes on a few more and so are the ideas that we can keep working and keep taking more people what kind of artist do you try and do a cross section you're trying do all painters oral printmakers are all sculptors or I mean I artist in need pretty much any artist indeed we try to evaluate based on not only the need but what they bring to the project and what the city you know once the fee based on what these curators think it's important to be shown our our mission is about underrepresented arts and that could mean both people and styles of art and that's what we're focused on so we have everything from poets and writers to dance to print makers to they only to who I really yeah yeah all in one space I am trying you trying match personalities we haven't gotten that it psychological profiling yet for vital spaces year one we are not there well it is the space between the ears I mean this is really cool and it has to be very exciting for the some of the artists there like maybe just emerging or maybe often found them if found themselves in a in need of a studio in there you are and I think that it's really what the feedback we're getting a lot which is an interesting thing that's happening is just that the artists create their own community and so it creates a lot of cross pollination increase projects that develop amongst themselves I mean where Sean is one of our artists and he was on the cover of the reporter he has a really cool story in fact absolutely and he brings a lot of energy to the project and get other artists in the building involved he's one of our terrace street artists and we're now really branching into educational programming and so specifically for the studios on the campus is going to be the the artists who decide to take those are going to be agreeing to engage in educational programming as part of their agreement to that studio so partnering with make windows school for the arts are I a I a or school design the Santa Fe school district and the city are the two partnerships were really flushing out as well as the Santa Fe Indian center were in early discussions with bind K. specifically the school district and the city thinking about the city's youth program that they hold that Driskell center right now that eight hundred kids in there last summer and we hope to be able to offer arts programming it's right there were already on the campus so it seems like a natural partnership which is flushing that out and really excited about the possibility of it Art Institute as well I'm at with Jamie Blosser absolutely we are on campuses ABS absolutely Jamie and I I mean take communication about what we're doing to make sure we're on the same page and we are just exploring ways we can work together our guest is Jonathan Boyd founder director of vital space is vital spaces dot orgy yeah all right if you want to apply can people can an artist have two spaces can they be B. and in multiple places if if if you have room and they have the need I mean we have the exhibition space and we have okay so absolutely we encourage our artists who are in our studios to use our exhibition space and but we would never offer to studios to one artist because we have such too many lines for need in this city for studio space that's why things I've learnt M. in this project as I thought I was going to be creating a lot of exhibition space around the city for people to see art and it turns out that everybody just needs a place to work all right so basically mixed use is is what they're looking at at vital spaces Jonathan border guess rigid need your house take a break we'll come back with more about vital space is not just a midtown campus but other buildings are planning or are already occupying the listing to talk twelve sixty one of three seven KPRC copying culture the podcast goes up after the show if you need a room we listened to it could listen to the whole thing or you want to share it at Santa Fe dot com slash.
