"And we all go to cliches everywhere. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay. In classic os fashion, I asked you a question. 20 minutes ago. And I answered one. We did not. No, we didn't answer the question. Okay, so as a thought exercise, we were building a team. Acknowledging that you're probably not going to have the perfect goalie in Andre basilisk, who's a specimen, can basically do anything and would thrive in any environment I'd say, although he's gotten a pretty good pretty good handle as well, yes. What are we sacrificing or what are we prioritizing? You could take it from either direction in terms of either a physical trait or a skill set for a goalie that you feel like, all right, this is something they're going to struggle at, but I feel like we can get an infrastructure around them that will allow us to minimize that and still allow them to succeed at NHL level. One thing I am not sacrificing is that skating and the one thing that absolutely has to be there now because I don't care. We did this a different way one year where it was like if you're building a team, you want three top line centers, four great top 4D or one elite goaltender. And if you gave me truth serum, I'd say four top four D and I'll build you a goaltender that can succeed behind it, right? Like I would take the structure and the defensive play ahead of an elite goaltender and I'd say I can find you or not I shouldn't say I. I would say I can hire goalie coaches that I think can build you a goaltender that would see succeed behind that. Well, you still would say that just because having four good defensemen is such a luxury, both offensively and defensively. Yeah, but I'm still not a hundred percent sure that everyone would see it that way. So and the goal union people wouldn't expect that answer for me. So there's that caveat. But the one thing I am not sacrificing. I would sacrifice size ahead of this is even if I haven't as the game becomes so dynamic, even if I have a great defense. I gotta have a goalie that can move. Like I just gotta have a goalie that can move. If you can't skate, you can't play. I hear that all the time around the National Hockey League for goal tenders right now. And I think that's just the one that, you know, I'll take a 6 footer who can skate over a 6 foot 5 that can't. And like Soros is the perfect example, but that's the one attribute that you absolutely have to have. And I would sacrifice others, not all of them, but I'd sacrifice others as long as my goalie could move and skate. Do they actually list sorrow since what? I think they do. I think the only place it's in his dating profile he lists that he's 6 foot. Otherwise, I think he's probably more in the 5 8 ish race. Listen, and this is so common. So I've written stories obviously about the trend towards bay and Jonathan bernier telling me like he watches and cheers for the small goalies. Like look at the career he's carved out.

"So speaking with people around the league last year, I did a big Jack Hughes feature for appearing side. And I was like, you know, I was going through all the tape. I was very curious in the projection or the progression of his game from year two to year three and the steps he took, right? And just speaking with people in different teams and stuff, everyone agreed that as a community, we weren't talking enough about how fun the Devils were last year, how much offensive talent they had and how much of a handful they could wind up being for other teams to deal with if they could ever get a save. And the degree to which they created in that last season was pretty wild to consider. I don't know what I'm curious what you got and you can pull it out. I'll give you the stats I've got. They use 7 different goalies. Those 7 goalies combined to give up 61 more goals than expected. According to evolving hockey, those 7 goalie stopped 88.1% of the shots they faced, which was only better than the Seattle kraken. And it's been a cursed position for them, right? We can talk about blackwood here and what happened, what went wrong, what the future outlook should be like. But they were clearly looking for a reliable backup to help cover for him, and in consecutive off seasons they signed Corey Crawford and Jonathan bernier and they got ten combined games out of them. Now they traded a draft pick at the draft to bring in, we take advantage check. I assume they're going to try to get something out of his numbers in his first two seasons. I've been quite pedestrian. But it's going to come down to what they can get out of black would obvious. He's in kind of a crossroads season where I believe it's the last year of the bridge contract he signed his salary actually escalates a little bit, so he's pretty pricey this season. He's 26 or whatever, he's turning 26 this season. And his numbers have not been good the past year and a half or so clearly. But I'm really curious about the Devils because they're a team that I love watching. I have high hopes for because of the personnel they have, especially in terms of upfront skaters. But for them to go from being like a frisky young team to a team that actually gives people problems, they need to stop being 31st and deep sampled and see a percentage. So how do you break that down in terms of what they actually got? Because they were obviously using goalies you probably shouldn't have been playing in the NHL last season as well. They were one of my circuit exhibit a's. Nico dawes. And there were periods there. Like I think as much as on the overall, or Nico's numbers ended up, there were certainly stretches there where they should be encouraged by his future, because he shouldn't have been in the National Hockey League, like just based on just, I mean, it was his first year pro. He played ten games the year before in Germany. There were some periods there were, there's some real upside there.

"Well that's who that guy is and we know the deal there is anyway. I see a bunch of listeners again. Russell kings Brian anybody in there. That i see that recognized. And some not-so-subtle pearl clutching about the play of cow. Peterson in the preseason at. I'm not one of the parole clutches. I tend towards everything. I've seen from cal peterson in his short career has been positive and if he's going to have a a rough patch or rough stretch. That's going to happen to any player and you know. Hey it's preseason. As far as i'm concerned is an acceptable Rationalization for why you know. Maybe he allowed some goals that that caused people's eyebrows to raise at. This is a player regardless of what any one fan thinks. This is a player that the organization is high on. I won't share names or specific comments of people that i've spoken to in the organization but rest assured like that contract. He got was not. It's not it's not show me contract. Obviously at three years five million dollars a year before his current contract ends they have built his contract structure and their expectations around him on the expectation that he will be not just discerning goalie but a very good if not excellent if not elite started going And i understand that. His development curve has taken a little bit longer than other goalies have certainly in the kings in the past but one of the things i find myself doing in one of the things that i see. Training and conversations online is a tendency to compare. What's happening on the kings right now with what happened to the kings from two thousand six to two thousand twelve on that short upward rise to not just cup contender status but cup winner status and i i always want sort of way in pump the brakes and say that was an incredibly rare situation and incredibly wonderful situation. And there's no reason that any other five year period six periods should mirror. Exactly what happened to the kings in that stretch and so a guy like jonathan quick the first legitimate You know franchise goalie that the kings have ever had he. He broke in to professional hockey in an era where smartphones had not yet been introduced and social media didn't exist and so there wasn't any buzz about jonathan quick. There wasn't any fan conversation around jonathan quick. Was you and your buddy. You know who maybe knew who he was. Or maybe didn't i don't know how many people knew what the reading royals were. Back in. two thousand and six but jonah quake spent some time not a ton in the h. l. on the manchester monarchs. The kings had jonathan bernier. There is no. "But the fact that maybe that window, uh to get Jack Eichel back and on the ice isn't As wide as as that teams, my fear and and to your point charity. If you go the one route and you can't have Jack Eichel in your lineup until Whether it's February or March or whatever timetable it is. You're right. It doesn't make a lot of sense. And especially since you mean you want to know how how it's going to turn out. So yes, does it Does it bleed into next offseason? I mean, certainly that's that's not a great scenario for the Sabres. Certainly not a great scenario for Jack Eichel, who you know, miss half of last season with the injury, So it's a lot of this is unpalatable on many levels and for all the parties involved, But I don't disagree at all that this is You know, may not be something that gets resolved between now and October 12th minute season starts or early in the season. You're right. It could last months and months, which Wow gives us lots to talk about, but not great for fans of the team. That's for sure. He's got when hockey returns and we have another season. Are we as the league returning to the pre pandemic divisional setup and playoff format And if so, you're happy with that? You're not happy with that. What are your thoughts? Yeah, No, I I, but it will go back to to what we knew before. Of course, What will be new this year is the addition of the 30 seconds the NHL team in Seattle and so fascinated to see how the Seattle crack and, um perform especially, you know, the bar has been set incredibly high. When you think about the years 17 18 Vegas Golden Knights and charging from expansion team to establish Cup final and almost unheard of, uh, possibility, and in such a great story for the game, and certainly for for fans in Vegas. I'm not sure that Seattle can replicate that. And Ron Francis GM there has has gone about things in ways that's different than what George McPhee did in Vegas in starting in 27 2017 with the expansion draft and their first off season, so I am curious as he playing in the Pacific Division. That's another change. We go back to the normal before. Divisional set up with the West Conference in the East Conference. And with Arizona moving to the central Division. Um not a great move for them, necessarily given the you know the uncertainty surrounding their future in Arizona and where they're at as a team and in terms of another rebuild. Um, but Seattle will play in the Pacific Division. I think they have a legitimate chance to be a playoff team. That division is is a charitably. We can say its in transition. But there's just there are a lot of teams that aren't you know, sort of armed far along the evolutionary curves. So I think Seattle has a really good chance given their goaltending and and the way they are built. I think they have a legitimate chance to be a playoff team and certainly be playing meaningful games into February and March. Scott before I let you go If you go back through the offseason, who is there a team or maybe a two or three teams that you thought really had a tremendous offseason draft free agency trades whatever and have put themselves in position to really be a strong contender next season, who had a good off season. Yeah, I'm really curious about two of the teams in the Metropolitan Division, the New York Rangers and and the and the New Jersey Devils. You know, it's been It's been on sort of dry spell for the Devils. Lots of, you know, sort of. Stutter steps moving back and forth. They had a number one pick, of course in Nicolosi sure, and then Jack Hughes as well. I think both those players a former Great foundation down the middle for the Devils and Tom Fitzgerald's done a really nice job there in building out around that taenia, added Thomas daughter Some veterans scoring upfront. I'm really curious about the back end, though. Of course, the big free agent signing with Dougie Hamilton a monster, uh, deal there at $9 million a year. It's a lot for Dougie Hamilton. But he's a dynamic player. He is a point machine, and that's really important for that Devils team is where they have struggled offensively. And the goaltending with Jonathan Bernier, who had, I think quietly, very strong season in Detroit, and I mean emerging, but not very good team. Um, I think that Mackenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier give the devil's a chance. In a very difficult division to play again, meaningful games. I'm not sure their playoff team but I think they're going to be in the mix. And, of course, the New York Rangers are just there's such a fascinating team coming off of You know the pick, um, going into last season of Alexis LaFraniere at number one and the year before with Capital Concho at number two, um, really have solidified themselves. Adam Fox are defending Norris Trophy champion. Of course, they needed to get tougher and Chris Jury, of course, well known to Sabre fans who is now going into his first season as the GM. After the shake up at the end of last season in upper management. I thought the ad of Barkley good drove from from Tampa Coming off the cup wins, there was really important. I think they're going to be harder to play against. They still need to decide what to do with me because advantage at who's got one year left on his deal, but the Rangers, I think the expectation is gonna be really high for that Ranger team. Very talented should be a ton of fun to watch and you are going on behind the bench there. I'm curious about how the Devils and the Rangers make out in what should be a crowded metropolitan division. Yeah and some goalies can get a rep for being really good on really bad teams right. I'm not sure if that's fair for bernie. I do think a team like the flyers has interest in him. I think carolina did make him an offer. Just it was really low ball offer. I think he's gonna hit the mark surprise supplies But like you know like there's a guy that i still think can be a number one guy. He has had a lot of success. But what happens if you put him in an environment where you're not busy. You're not seeing a lot of shots. Yup and the expectations are just totally different. I think he can handle that. But i know there's a lot of goalie coaches and general managers right now. That are looking at that with enough uncertainty that. I don't know how deeply they're willing to commit to commit to him. He he was awesome last year even the past two years. I think i think he was. He was for detroit taste too good based on what they were trying to accomplish. But yeah i mean if you look at his results. Compared to the other trotted out there and look at his game you actually fit carolina really well steadiness to him that the devolve. That's just a you know. It's like i actually think checks a lot of the boxers but i just i just don't know that he's that that they're willing to pay him what he thinks he can get on the open maybe hits the market. I think he's going to be pretty highly after a couple of some sort of crazy contract. But i think there's going to be teams that are lining up to try and get them and that's the question right in a buyer's market and this this clearly is a buyer's mark. He's like he's still positive significant positive. He's plus one percent but that sort that amongst the league in its eighteenth. matter of fact. It's just ahead of jonathan. Bernier was plus point nine behind a much worst events team and when you look at expected. Save percentage for ned in carolina. It was nine six. Which is one of the highest totals are the highest sort of the easiest environment. Roughly speaking among sending two hundred shots. Now the interesting thing to me there is behind the same team. Peter meraz expected save percentage was almost thirty points lower. And this is this is sort of a conversation. We can spin off this later. We've seen this before we saw it was hysterical and lundquist. We saw last year with tristan. Jari having a really high expected and matt marine having a much lower one again behind the same team. Start scratching your head like. Why is this guy's environment so much easier than playing partner. It's the same team right. And sometimes that can be matchups. What teams what starts. You're getting especially the backup. Maybe getting some easier or sometimes harder starts on back to back nights. You know there are a lot of different factors thing but sometimes somebody's hurt tougher part of the schedule. Somebody's hurt in front of you in the defenses whereas like all these things can play into it. But the one factor that i think amongst those names that i just mentioned is the ability to sort of handle the puck and moves the puck like lundquist. Never got out of his net. Share can handle it like defenseman. Pierre maroshek doesn't really do much other than stop it and even sometimes doesn't do that right. Ed can handle it similar with jari. Murray totally different goals. So i do think that's one thing as we look at defensive environments i think goaltenders ability to handle and move the puck. And i'm not talking. Homerun breakout passes. They make the highlight tape. Just set it up and put his defenseman clean little overs clean little ups to get them out of their own and quicker can make their own life that much easier so as much as like ned fault that he had a really high expected. Saber centers. in fact that's what he was dealt but in fact some of his skills with the puck may have helped create an easier environment for him. So listen it's at the same time. Archy way would add a little bit better the chances they certainly had some a swell but good enough to win the hockey game five on five, and you know, we've got to do a better job, especially teams, so it's kind of hockey. We need a play to be successful. I think we need to be in a lot of those types of games, but we have to find ways to come up with two points. You left both Larkin and Manta off the first two power plays yesterday, Dylan said after the game. It was a good lesson for him to just kind of watch the man advantage and see what was and what not going on, I guess. And then you put him back in, I guess. What was that? A message you were sending to those guys. And what was the mind set there? No, it wasn't really a message. As much as you know those those those two individuals amongst a bunch of guys haven't got the job done and and ultimately, you know, regardless of what people's names are, we need people in there and get the job done and executing if you don't give other guys Opportunity. You don't know for sure what they can do. And so we give some other guy's an opportunity. And those two guys came out came off it. And ultimately, the guys that that got that opportunity. Yeah, I know you don't touch Charles done a good job. He's a really, really talented playmaking player. He's probably the most natural kind of half wall savvy, passing type player that we have. On the power play. You know, she's got a pretty good job there. I think he came into the year of the good attitude he came in. He wasn't playing scared toe, you know, afraid to not make the team. He just came in and played his game and understood that you know whether he made it a den. He was just gonna keep playing his game and always getting opportunities. Playing pretty good hockey is obviously not Super big. He's not super fast, so he's got to use his brains and his skill set. I think you've done a good job of that. Jeff, this marks the 10th game of the season. Can you speak to the sense of urgency that you and your team are starting to feel? I mean, after today, it's kind of crazy, but there's only 46 games left in the season. Why didn't Greenaway from the onset? There's a sense of urgency and I don't know that it's increasing. I just think you know, I think we understand how short this season is, and we understand available every game is, you know we got our season like a lot of people's lives totally changed last year and ultimately the end of it taken away last year, And so we know that things can change on a dime. They can change in a day, and we're not taking anything for granted. So we're Showing up every day trying to do the best weekend. You know, I think our guys have done a good job of trying to keep continue to get better. We gotta find ways to get results in these closer games. If we had done that, a little bit more record looks a little bit better. So we gotta make sure we play the right way. Put ourselves in position, win and then find ways to win the close games.
