Heaven and Hell with Bart Ehrman
"Hey welcome to stuff to blow your mind. My name is Robert Lamb and I'm Joe McCormick and this week. We are going to be featuring a couple of interviews. That I recorded last week because last week Robert, you were out of quote, the office you or at least you off work for a bit and so so I recorded conversations with authors of some books one book. That's already out this year in one book. That's coming up so on Thursday of this week. We're going to be airing a conversation that I had with the author of A. A fascinating upcoming book about the evolutionary biology of cancer, but today we're going to be exploring topic in the realm of ancient history and religion. If you've followed us for a while, I think you probably know this about us that one of our favorite kind of trails to go down his tracing the evolution of religious ideas through ancient history I mean I think I've outed myself on this podcast before. As a the kind of nonreligious person who loves the Bible. Can I love to read ancient religious texts and learn about them and see how the ideas from. From the ancient world of super filtered through to us today and shape to the societies we live in, and that's exactly the kind of thing. We're GONNA be diving into in this episode I'm talking with a secular Biblical historian named Bart Erman about his most recent book, which is called Heaven and hell a history of the afterlife. This book was released in March of this year by Simon. And Schuster, and it's all about the Christian ideas of life after death where they come from ancient history, what influence their development and how they changed over time so? So there was a part that cited in the intro of Bart's book where he talks about a pew research poll that was conducted a few years ago. I think. Maybe it was in two thousand fifteen. Where it found that seventy two percent of Americans believe in a literal heaven and fifty eight percent believe in literal hell, and yet I think most Americans would be deeply surprised, even shock to learn what historians can show about the origins of these beliefs in the strange thing. Is that like the historical conclusions that Bart's GonNa talk about in this episode? Are Not fringe or unusual among secular scholars of the Bible, in historians of the ancient Near East This is utterly mainstream, critical scholarship, and yet I think regular people are especially in the united. States, are going to find it very surprising. Yeah, absolutely, and I want to stress something here for everybody, so I just got back. To work this morning and I plugged into a pre production cut of this interview and it's really it's really excellent, so if you're even slightly scared away by the idea of an interview with a secular biblical scholar don't be because Barda is tremendous. He's he's funny. Very High Energy. I think you're really going to enjoy this chat. Joe Had with Bart here. Yeah, parts full of knowledge, good humor passion for his subject. I think you're really going to enjoy the episode, but before we can do it I'll just give a little bit of background on Bart's here's his biography Bart. D Ehrman is a leading authority on the New Testament and the history of early Christianity, and the author or editor of. Of more than thirty books, including the New York Times bestsellers misquoting Jesus, how Jesus became God, and the triumph of Christianity, and that last one's really interesting. It's about how Christianity took over the Roman Empire and went from a really small religion, too dominant religion of the empire, and just a matter of a few centuries anyway, so he is a distinguished professor of religious studies, the University of North Carolina Chapel, Hill and he. He has created eight popular audio and video courses for the great courses. He has been featured in time. The New Yorker The Washington Post and has appeared on NBC CNN and the daily show with Jon Stewart as well as the history channel National Geographic Channel BBC NPR, all the hits his most recent book is Heaven and Hell just one more thing before we get into it I. WanNa mention obviously we are dealing with. With the audio constraints of of remote recording in the age of Covid, nineteen, so for example around the twelve minute mark in the episode there is briefly some background noise that sounds like a fan was turned on or some rain. It only lasts for about a minute or so, and so please just put up with a little bit of background noise, and it's very brief I promise. It's not the sounds of hell right. Now audio recordings of the underworld leaking up through some sort of mining microphone right? The well to hell was not unleashed office. So yeah, I would say without any further ado. Let's jump right in. Bardem and welcome to the PODCAST. Thanks so much for joining us today. Yes, thanks for having me so your Book Heaven and Hell I just finished reading yesterday, and I I really really enjoyed it. and I want to say that I started reading this book. It very opportune time because though I didn't plan it this way. I'm also currently in the middle of rereading. Rereading the divine comedy, actually my wife and I are reading it together and of course, the divine comedy Dante his wonderful poetry, but it's also psychologically fascinating because when you go through the theology of Dante, you get the sense of somebody who is simultaneously ingenious and thoughtful, and in some ways very intellectually bold and open minded for his historical context, but in other ways. Dante's also very limited and provincial in a word medieval like the way you see him taking so much pleasure in designing horrific tortures for his enemies from these. Petty Thirteenth Century political struggles in Italy. Working with ancient religious texts do you find yourself encountering? This kind of irony embodied within the same author or traditional lot

"This is this is this. Is this a surprise? Did you always know that you know most of the time? The law is the law. Well we'll. Absolutely I knew that, but Jeff Toobin I talk about this all the time as do I. Talk About this with my legal nerd friends, you know. When you get on the bench, they do especially the Supreme Court they do surprise you and I think by and large many of them don't become these judicial activists that people think that they do. They do respect precedent, and if you read this opinion, that is what Justice Roberts. Said said he didn't think that the Texas law that came before this should have been struck down. So that really is at his core, but he. He said because it had been struck down. He is going to abide by the precedent in that case, and so that's why he stuck with the majority of liberals in this case, not because he necessarily believed that the abortion access shouldn't have been restricted, but because it was legal precedent, so he stuck sort of the color of the law, but I think what's really interesting is, will this to the benefit of Donald? Trump will. Will Conservatives now be very nervous and think Oh, my Gosh I've got a vote for Donald trump now because he's GonNa put more conservatives on the bench and I think historically Evangelical Christians were sort of that one vote voter single issue voters. They only were antiabortion voters. I think times have changed I. Think you'll see a lot of Democrats wanting to defeat Donald Trump. They are though single issue, voters and I think you're gonNA. GonNa Find Republicans are those single issue voters. They're thinking about racial equality. They're thinking about the corona virus that thinking about the fact that there were bounties allegedly on our service. Men and women and trump did nothing about that, so there are a lot of issues that people care about all wrapped up defeating Donald Trump, and so I, don't know that this decision is necessarily going to newer to the benefit of Donald trump anymore. I just think that it. The idea of someone becoming chief justice turns. Turns them in a different way. They are there to interpret the law, and sometimes called upon to strengthen or weaken the law, and I think their idea of what they're doing for the country, not how they feel personally, but what is right for the country now we have. We've had several justices that you know just vote through party, but we're seeing maybe that we can't depend on who a person you think is conservative being a conservative in the midst of the law. You know they can personally be that, but not necessarily. Make the law work for them in that way and you. It's amazing thing about the law and all the things that we're talking about today, because it's might be one of the reasons that the view. Won An emmy over the weekend. Yes, we did and we're actually talking about is something we never do. And it's. It's kind of wonderful because you know. We are show and you know we've had many iterations, but at its core Barbara Walters started a show. With women talking about their opinions, and it's been on now. How long? How long is this? Twenty. I, think it's twenty years now. I think we're going twenty. Four years. My Gosh, how? The second time the show has one. Yeah I was second time I was twelve. I was twelve warmly started. Yes! I was. I was in vitro. Just what you know, who is more excited about this best talk show win best informative talk show you know who lost their mind. Can we show it, please?.

"Lowest paid. And how did we create? How do we? Know. For many years. We've sort of gone on this principle. Love if we just take care of the investor class. We'll get a taste. Donald say we I'm now up there. But. The pendulum has swung away from valuing work. And we have to figure out you know, and they always talk about the people that talk about trickle down are always about three liberty well. What's more liberating than? Not Having to worry about your health insurance being tied your job or Working really hard, but still having to use food stamps. That's not freedom. And we have to find a way to make those in his country. Who are essential? To give, them more liberty. And more liberty comes from. Being able to live a life. That is built on granite and non quicksand. I could talk to you forever. My friend thank you so much for joining us again I. Hope Everyone Watches the movie I hope you having fun. I hope you're staying healthy help. You're loving your family and your kids and enjoying yourself and let me say. May I have a moment? Yeah. I'm so impressed by everything. The only thing I would say. Do you have to do it so handsomely. that. The handsomeness if I may. Feels a little bit like a personal attack. The other stop. I love it if you could do the show. Without temples. I will I will pass these comments on onto managements and we'll see what we can do. Jon Stewart. Thank you so much for joining us on the show. I hope to see you again. "This proves that our community can rise up and come together under the worst circumstances. It also proves it. I look good glasses. You Trevor. Making so much for that Roy that was amazing. Don't go away because Jon Stewart's is next. We'll be right back. Welcome back to the social distancing show earlier today I spoke with my old boss, John Stewart's his new movie irresistible, which he wrote and directed, we'll be in theaters and on demand beginning, June twenty-sixth, we talked about his movie and much more. Favorable look at your Lens and not not the screen, so it's No the other. Yeah, that's closer to they're they're? Yeah that's. You know look, please. Oh Man. Jon Stewart. Welcome to the daily social distancing show I'm going to impress now. It's got to be a week straight joke. It's and everything from this space, and this is how you doing. For the first time since I've been doing this, someone had the decency to kindness to go. You might want to look at the camera. Yeah. But this is like you know what it's like the it's the common new thing. People don't realize because I'll screens and cameras. I feel like someone needs to put them in line because this is not how we talk to each other, this is. Yeah you only look at first. I WANNA. Look at you, do it like they imagined it in the science fiction movies in the seventies where you do the vehicle and your head in my Ano- Talk. I've come to realize that like all the things that we learned from science fiction in the movies. It was very ambitious, but we've got like very. You know like you know like if you grew up with parents. Bring you a very like cheap version of the cool thing you wanted as a kid. That's the future we live in now, so we would like imagine if you could talk to someone through a screen. They're like okay. You can't do that, but you can look off at them and seemed like you don't know where they are and communicate effectively. That's basically what we do. Well, you write like what is this? What is this room behind you I'm in my attic. Yes, the room when my children were younger. This was their playroom, and so they did allowed doodling. Cousins did because is where they come up with their cousins, and then day grew up. And decided. You know what I'm just going to stay in my room, quarantine or no quarantine And you're going to go up into the attic, so that's what we've done. It's funny because like it's. It's beautiful now. That was your kids who did that, but it almost looks like the same graffiti that's on like the confederate monuments around America, it looks like you let people practice the graffiti your house before they go to the monuments, so they can get it right and Tika has infiltrated my hat. Her Doing. The Best I can, but they are rabble-rousers. And as you can see. They have decided that the this wall must. This is the Berlin Wall. And they going to take it down. What are you? What are you what you make of all that like like honestly because like? I mean this just like the confederate monuments like every statue coming down, I mean it started with confederate statues. It started with. You know like racist people from history. Then we started seeing you. Don't statues coming down. All of like people who fought for the Union, people fought against slavery. And like what do you make of it? We just should we get rid of statues. What's going on what you'll find is? If you don't allow regular order to take down the statues that represent. The insurrection that tried to destroy this country and preserve the institution of slavery. If you make that impossible to do through. Leading a peaceful treaty and all that you're going to end up with a spasm. People shouldn't have four hundred. The statues are not from the confederate era from the Crow era there or when they. Say just see now, I know. They let you go I just WANNA make sure everybody understands like we will subjugate. And bring in your life. So? You know because these statues are not people say like you're a racing history, which by the way I don't remember the Conservatives during the Iraq war. When the Saddam Hussein statue fell Baghdad I. Don't recall Republicans at the time going..

"And the GOP establishment still turn to him after that's been exposed and says seriously, though that is a beautiful coat like there's no moving them off of that. Will tied their fortunes to him and I'm sure there's a lot of. Nervousness right now about whether that is going to turn out to be a wise decision, but within the council's within the the the GOP electorate, he has such sway that there's fear about about leaving him. You know the other thing about this thing and tell us I want to move on to something else That was so interesting to me is. Is He is the head of the government that is in charge of dealing with this pandemic and this government of his and their public health experts have made certain recommendations to try and contain this virus, and keep it from spreading, and he flagrantly disregarded all of those for his event Intelligensia, despite the pleadings of local officials to reconsider and so on. And is really really odd to be the head of the government that is charged with dealing with a pandemic and the leader of the resistance to the very recommendations that his own government is making. That's the story of his presidency. He's. The, insurgent incumbent I mean the pandemic from the beginning. He has a press conference with all the the leaders of the health experts. The CDC experts Dr Fallacy. And the recommendations that America needs to take and how we have to shelter in place in all these things, and then goes back in tweets out liberate Michigan. Liberate Virginia. It's everything that he says I am in complete control. I take no responsibility. And that's the message of his presidency. Cognitive dissonance cognitive dissonance is what he should brown. He's running, did you? The signs are make America great again. That's a sign that's running against the incumbent America. That's what it's saying is America's not great right now. We, gotTa make great again. WHO's been charged? None of this makes any sense, but I. Don't think it's supposed to. Because I think it's supposed to appeal to a more reptilian feeling. I think as they started out the year. They actually they actually changed the slogan to keep America Great. And then we hit. The TRIFECTA of crises and people aren't feeling terribly great right now and so they're trying to adapt, but I think what's happened. John is the cost of you know. There was a long period of time when people said. who were serve on the bubble? Well, you know I. Don't like the way he behaves, but he's strong economies good, and now the cost of the chaos that swirls around him, and the cost of the incompetence is beginning to dawn on people, and you can see it in these polling numbers. I'm not saying he's GonNa. Lose the election because you can never underestimate a guy who will do anything. it's kind of a symmetric warfare. You know, but I do think something has changed because of of what's happened. I want to talk about race with you and the the issue of race and I. Want to bring up a store. That is a little bit off point, but I think leads into it. You told a story some years ago about when a critic attacked you because you had an all male writers room on your show and deeply offended you because the implication was that you were sexist and you didn't feel like you were sexist. Tell me about that. Well that was so. We, had a it was a a website called Judge Bell, which wrote an article accusing. Me Of. Being sexist running a sexist operation I. Went into hydrogen very defensive. how dare they? I was raised by a single mother. You know when I was growing up. And by the way this was in the early seventies before single motherhood took off as fad, she was a pioneer and single motherhood and. She wore a shirt that said a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. So I knew I was impeached shift from early on. So how dare you accuse me being sexist, and this is outrageous and I I went back to the writer's room and I said. Can you believe this Shit Steve? Rory Kevin Mike. Right, believe Shit Dan. What do you think Dan? You believe this shit. Elliott. Greg Darren anybody anybody believes this shit. and. So. In that moment. I was embarrassed. I was I was. Somewhat ashamed of myself. A for my defensiveness but be. For it being correct for us, not having because years before that. We had instituted a policy. For some of these very reasons you know our show was. Like almost all late night shows almost all white noman. And, so we'd instituted a policy of years back for writing samples to make all writing submissions a blind in other words, all the names would be taken off it and they would all be formatted to say so. You wouldn't have any idea. And yet even in that time. All writers, we ended up hiring ended up being male. And White. You Know I. Guess I guess the The implication being hey man, fair process is what it is. We're not sexist. They're just funnier. Well. What you didn't realize his first of all systems tend to propagate themselves. And second of all. Where are we getting the submissions from? I mean we're a bunch of white dudes? Some from the Ivy League, but we're getting from. Agencies will who's running the agencies. which white dudes some from Ivy League schools?.

"Worn. His appeal at this point seems to be. In his ability as a troll. And if that's enough to get another four years so I mean, but that's I've been shocked. To be like. Wow He's not really writing any new material Kong flu. Really, that's what you're going to go. Okay, you Kinda hit on the head of the thing that was striking about it other than the fact that they touted it as as this massive. Event that was going to draw this huge crowd was the material was all there was no new material was a relaunch with no new material, and it's no new material coming in the middle of a pandemic and economic crisis racial protests across the nation. It's the day after June eighteenth. He's in Tulsa the site of one of the most horrific racial massacres. In our nation's history, it's the ninety ninth anniversary of it, and he does twenty minutes on. HOW INCREDIBLY STEEP RAMPS ARE! And it. Just shows. You know this is someone who is utterly removed from it. Everything is just to his own rhythms. He's incapable of. Rising to a moment. And we'll just see if if plan that same song. Is what they wanted to hear. Even the idea that you talk about material like. The idea that we're talking about President developing material. For his. Vaudeville show. Is Like Oh my God. I mean and this is in this terrible moment of anguish. When so many people are suffering? From a variety of economic or systemic ills? To have him up there be Glib. Was I. Think for me one of the most shocking aspects of it. To see somebody pantomime in the way that he panta minds. Seem so. Devoid of understanding? Of the pain and fear that so many people are going through it was. bonkers and expected. In a way this thing is setting up to underscore the contrast between he and Biden. There are a lot of criticisms about the pace and rhythm of the Biden campaign, but the quality said he projects are qualities of empathy qualities of dignity qualities of character. They play well against the trump stake. Don't they right at this moment when this country is so ridden I again like. Even when the country wasn't in this situation, I would have thought grabbing by the Pussy wouldn't have been a winning slogan, but apparently was so. and I don't know that it's even about. What you project like look, there's an easier. Task for the Republicans. It's be well. I shouldn't even say the Republicans it's. There is no Republican Party. It's a fully owned subsidiary of the trump organization. and. There's no real principle to it. If there were. Every criticism that they leveled against Obama for eight years. Would raise their hackles. When trump does it literally down to the amount of time? He Plays Golf. I mean as they say there's always a tweet, but. I mean Donald. Trump's presidency is a failed presidency by the metrics laid out by Donald Trump. The things that he criticized you know. He made his bones as a troll. And now that he's in office, the chickens come home to roost, but. He lives in an entirely. Different universe of his own making. And his minions. Coddle. That you know there's there's so many myths about this man. You know they'll say he's a fighter. He's a counterpuncher. But he's he's not a counterpuncher. A counterpuncher is a strategic move to parry an attack with precision. Donald trump is a tantrum. Donald Trump doesn't he just hits back? He can't discern the difference between. An attack? A personal attack. A constructive criticism. or Even praised, that's not worshipful enough. They all get the same treatment. He attacks. Fox News. That's not counterpunching. Fox News is A. A nuclear reactor. For Rim job machine. Like all that thing does. Is is coddle and Philippe that man. was like seven minutes a week where they might push back a little bit and even that. There is no bar of worship you can raise to. Even when his his? Whatever the photo stump was he basically tear. Gas is peaceful protesters and then holds up a Bible. My favorite thing is his the look on his face when he holds up the Bible. is so stern looks like he's saying who wrote this? I'm going to stay late until I. Find Out who wrote this your trump. And you know as the literally teargassing protesters. Puts you more on the side of Jesus when it actually puts you more on the side of punches pilot, but that's besides the point. The point is after ended, and this thing is a debatable. Scott Walker. Who is? Supposedly. You know one of the more competent and respected members of the GOP establishment. tweets out. I just so admired the guts of this man. I can't imagine any other president having the guts to make that wall. And of course the Internet does what the Internet does. Which is goes back and finds a bunch of images of every president since Eisenhower making that walk, but without a phalanx of riot police next to them, but what it said to me was. Not only is this the emperor's new clothes? But the story ended. The emperor was called out for being naked. The crowd laughed and.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill Goes Quiet After NYPD Officers Doused with Water
"But we start with the situation in which a number one the police commissioner of New York City o'neill as cops are under siege has not been heard from sheen his last statement of any note was a tweet he did about the passing of Robert Morgan saw that was Sir Gee that was towards the end of the weekend and he is out of sight out of mind everybody's wonder how can we honor from the police commissioner about these attacks on the police okay once again Curtis you have been on the streets you understand you know the cops you know various politicians in very city leaders what do you think is happening here with why are we not hearing from o'neill I think it could be one of three things Hey he said odds with the mayor on this so he's just biting his lip and he sent out his his means to address this Terence morning and who is the head of patrol this is what he had to say we will identify who is involved in a rational be made with that is not acceptable how many women were out there keeping people safe and the two arrests have been made one of Brooklyn one in Manhattan where the two water don king situation to the N. Y. P. took place have a what are the charges well they put out a a flyer and I had a laugh at it because the headline of the flyer is wanted for obstruction of government administration right which is which is a B. S. charge and I know it's a B. S. charge because whenever the cops wanted to harass me an arrest me they couldn't figure out a charge the look to sergeant Sarge would say one of the structure of government administration and I would see what the hell does that mean well give me an example of what you had done to receive that charge standing in front of a police officer questioning him his it far do you to do what he was doing which was trying to lock me up exchanging words it is the it is a charge with you going to court generally the judge looks at the assistant district attorney dependent on the Berlin says you're kidding me is this is all you got on the guy anything he says it cut him loose that said he was held open not cut him loose time Sir did have a lot of you stay out of trouble so they've arrested this one person who was allegedly a gang member who is seen dumping a bucket of water and we don't know if this is going to be a serious charge or not serious when I was in any gradations of a soul I mean this assault this is also in the video in Harlem not only with a dousing the cops will water when they were making a bona fide address and they had the guy down on the squad car you know on the hood of the squad car but the guy came up and then hit him with the plastic the the plastic bucket yeah that's a soul I mean I I don't understand this but then again it's gotten so bad with the missing in action nature of police commissioner o'neill they now you have heads of the union saying you know nearly been a lap dog for the mayor who's responsible for this maybe it's your time to goal Sayonara and is another back in the mayor the rank and file has lost confidence in them and it's time that you resign I think in the interest of the department it's time to go I mean I I I I I don't know what else what else could be done at this point I think that it seems to me and I've spoken with some of my friends who are police officers here in New York City actually right around here right around the precinct here and they have no they have absolutely no faith in o'neill and they also feel that their lives are being put in danger because of the situation but they blame at least the ones that I talked to ultimately build Lazio yeah but it's o'neill who should be visiting the precincts affected building up to around saying Hey look him maybe some cops and not ready for prime time they're not ready for the streets but I gotta tell you we got your back even ease been missing in action now could he be hill could he be undergoing an operation the likelihood of that is probably not because he won't he would be hearing something about yeah I think or could he be on vacation with his family which would really really be an embarrassment to suddenly not have anything to say it's a police commission or the most powerful well trained police department in the world and you'll like missing in action well unfortunately let's say that he is on vacation we have no idea this would be a situation where you are paid you are you are given the responsibility of being the in charge of the biggest most important most critical police department in the world world and come back from vacation and you would have thought that the mayor with the state in New York City yesterday because this has become such an explosive issue in he was aware Washington DC campaigning for the presidency he had the hoods he had the goal to try to **** rushes way into that press conference and announce with Jon Stewart and some of our elected officials that finally the nine eleven victims compensation bill named after hours had passed you mean this is the same guy that just chose to go and get a Cup of coffee at Israel his favorite little ad copy clutch place in park slope after he worked out instead of going to the event where they dedicated a some certain set a certain area by one world trade that's that's unbelievable and children to her credit said now you have nothing with this let you in he said I don't want to speak well okay you don't want to speak of the mayor of New York City the mayor of New York City is getting

Jon Stewart on Rand Paul delaying 9/11 bill: 'It's absolutely outrageous'
"So this interview with fox news to Jon Stewart did it Jon Stewart ranted about rand Paul's decision to he's blocking this bill that would extend the September eleventh victims compensation fund and John Stewart called that an abomination pardon me if I'm not impressed in any way by rand Paul's fiscal responsibility virtue signalling what rand Paul did was outrageous he's a guy that put us in the hundreds of billions of dollars in debt and now he's going to tell us that a billion dollars a year over ten years is just to watch for us to handle you know there's some things that they have no trouble putting on the credit card but somehow when it comes to the nine eleven first responder community man we gotta go through this you know we asked him bombing ation now this bill is going to get past rand Paul here's just trying to make a point try to add an amendment to this bill and he's trying to make a point about the budget so this with this bill I think the amendment's gonna get defeated and voted down and this bill's going to move forward but I don't know how rand Paul can really put himself in a position to where you know John store it looks more reasonable and patriotic than you do can you make your point somewhere else right your whole money out of somewhere else and wasn't it sucks when you have money taken out of a program but if you're the national parks if your NASA listen these people need to be taken care of and if you're the Republicans you cannot run on a platform of where the Americans look how unamerican these people on the left our look at the anti semitic things these people on the left say they hate America you can't say that and then screw over the people who saved America on September eleventh the rand Paul's point is that he was objecting because any any program any program that would last decades should be offset by cutting spending somewhere else that's that's less valuable so he's trying to get that amendment added in there and it doesn't look like that a man it's going to happen and it's this is been a overwhelming bite isn't thing this is going to pass through but now they have to deal with these amendments and if your rand Paul your battles a little bit better than that I understand you need a high profile bill to make a case that the spending is out of control I get it but this is not the one you want to do it you cannot do this right now when your party is saying we're all about America this party over there is not and then you're **** over the people who helped save America the first responders on September eleventh got to pick your battles a little bit better than that but you're absolutely right we're already hearing that a bipartisan agreement is out all but a done deal to keep funding this for a lot more
