"What's your life going to be like your day to day life? I think that's such a great selling point for colleges, but I think it's a great lesson for everyone who's listening because I can buy unless you have the most unique product. I can buy it in a million different places. So I have to understand why I should do business with you and part of that is what's surrounds that product. So I really applaud that. I think that's such a great lesson to be learned. Yeah. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I think one of the most fun moments I had decides the polar vortex was Nicki Minaj paid for the tuition of one of our students. And people were freaking out about it, of course. And there was a student who said, I wish that I, because the student had tweeted Nicki Minaj, there was a student who said in the comments of the post, I wish I could tweet Jon Snow and have him pay for my tuition and I responded as the college and said, well, you can. It's called sending a crow and everyone was freaking out like, did the college account just make a Game of Thrones reference? That's like, yes, I did. Yes, I did. I just watched it and I know but that reference was. But see, I think that's the point and you've said it a few times, is social media is social. It's supposed to be fun. When it becomes to clinical, when it just becomes give me give me sign up sign up sign up. I think that's where we all become disconnected because now you're just marketing at me versus involving me, you know, we really want I'm hoping that people really are getting from what you're saying is that social media is like peering through the fence and going, oh, I want to go over there. What's happening over there, that engages. That makes me want to learn more about your school, your product, your service. And I think that's really, really fascinating. So then talk to me about the jump.

"I think channel four has the luxury of not being the BBC. I love the BBC, and I listen to it or watch it far more than I want any other channel. But the fact is that given the BBC's position have given the fact that it is, in a sense a state run and controlled organism even though it manages to run a very, very fine and very objective operation, but I think the glory of channel four in the sense is that it's not the BPC, and that it actually has the opportunity to roam free and make of the world what we can. Although you are governed by the same regulator of court, might be the BBC and channel four. Can you remember a time when journalists came under so much criticism from the public as well as the government? I think there have been many times when it has been tough. I don't think it's gone on for as long as this, but then the pandemic is a very, is in exacerbating factor. But I'm in the times in misses thatchers, period, when there was tremendous warfare with the media. You know, it goes in cycle. I even remember how Wilson complaining about the media. You know, I mean, it's part of the furniture. It's part of the bunch of frankly, if democracy stops complaining about the media, then we've reached a very bad situation. Do you think does cancel culture exist? And do you worry about it if it does? Not so far as terrible news is concerned. I really am not conscious of it at all. Everybody is under pressure one way or another and mainly under pressure to tell the truth, and that our responsibility if we're caught short telling the truth, then we should be culture attention and not repeat it. But the fact is that that doesn't happen very often. People exaggerate the extent to which there is some sort of a battle going on. I don't really think there is. And I guess before we end it, I'm really interested in hearing your take on the health of the news industry right now..

"How in the world would you get agreement among the United Nations as to how that force should use its power? You wouldn't. You've only got to give a moment's thought to it, to know that you wouldn't. So you would veto it. It wouldn't be no good. There would be no point you'd never get a grim down rules of engagement. Now, it's much harder. They feel him battled. They think we're the enemy. It's got to a very soft and sad space. Are you the enemy? Of course not. I want truth. I want to find out what's going on. I want to know more about on behalf of the viewer in the listener. What is happening? What is your real purpose? What is the purpose of this law, or what is the purpose of what you're doing? But it can be very difficult to get. Of course, you can get a background briefing, but there are no pictures. And nothing to prove you ever spoke to anyone, because it's off camera. Your fellow big name interviewers tend to have a particular approach. You know, Jeremy paxman used to go on the attack Andrew Neil would adopt a sort of tone of incredulity if you like. How would you describe your interview style? Well, I'm much thicker than there. They're accomplished people with university degrees. I'm not. And therefore I have to be a much more animal, and I try to ask the question a that the viewer might really want answered. And then, you know, I mean, I try to follow up with an intelligent question, but I mean, the idea that I know any more than the average citizen, but perhaps that's the joy of this. I mean, the average citizen wants you to ask questions on their behalf. They don't want you to pull out your PhD and check subsection 5 plus 6 and see whether the minister is telling the truth. They want you to ask straight on. What's going on here? There is no disturbance you whatsoever in the Conservative Party. But that rebellion is not dead. The legislation is gone, John. It's finished. The only thing they're not gone. And they've lost everything. They were in the government lobby this evening. The atmosphere in the government lobby was excellent this evening. There was no difficulty about it. Well, your opponents also saying that they've won in a sense because they've drawn a line under maastricht and prevented you going any further with any kind of integration and effectively have forced you to outlaw any possibility to return to the ERA. I don't, but I certainly don't wish to go back to the exchange rate mechanism at the moment. Under any circumstances at the moment, you can see the difficulties that actually exist in the exchange rate mechanism in other countries. Now, it's not all just been straight news for you, clearly. You know, you've been stoned on TV. You've danced, you've sung on camera. I know you're a former chorister. So you know, even so, is that, isn't that quite an unusual thing for a news journalist to do? Is there a case or is there not a case for saying the news reader shouldn't be part of the story that audiences want a more bland figure? I don't think the presenter of news has a responsibility to evade the truth that he or she is a human being. And I think the attraction in many ways.

"But is it loaded? What idiot would let, dear man, I mean, on board, with a loaded pistol. And then I thought you were an idiot. You're not going to survive this, you try that. So I didn't do it. More code. We're not doing it? No, thank God I didn't want a stupid thing to try and do. Okay, so by 1978, you were in Vietnam reporting on a refugee crisis and remind us what happened in Vietnam because I think you ended up getting arrested. Well, there was a tremendous exodus of people and they were taking every kind of vessel boat whatever to escape. And of course the malaysians were not too clean to see people on that scale coming into their country, especially illegally. And they took pretty strong measures to try and stop them. We got on to one of the boats because we thought there was a clever idea to see just how much they were suffering. And they were suffering gravely. They were dead people on the boat. They were terribly squashed below decks in huge numbers, and we had a boat that had taken us out there. And he was standing off, and we thought, well, that's fine. He'll wait for us. But actually he didn't. He fled, and we were left stranded on the boat, our fate, really bound with theirs. And we then spent a certain amount of time trying to help these people land. And of course, that upset the locals, something rotten, and we arrested. Well, in 1990, yearend Johannesburg to watch Nelson Mandela walked to freedom. What was that like and how do you go about reporting a story of that kind? I think the problem was, it was intoxicating. It was absolutely the most glorious and it was liberation. It was, I mean, near South Africa had a terrible record of apartheid and all the rest of it..

"I really wanted to be a troublemaker. I wanted to change things. I mean, after I was sent down from university, I had to find something to do. And I went to work in a day center for homeless and vulnerable teenagers. And I stayed there for three years and it kind of taught me everything I hadn't learned at that point. So how come you're sitting with me now on the media show? You did become a journalist. Well, I did. And I wish I could have said I'd worked for the BBC, and that that made the transformation, but actually, despite pining to work for the BBC, I never have been invited. But still time, John. But, of course, in that time, the invention of independent radio of commercial radio was hatched, and the first station on air was LBC, London broadcasting. And I applied for a job there. For some reason, I think probably yes, probably the thought Peter snow, John snow. Well, he may be our own John snow of your right and they've got their own Peter snow. That'll make sense. And I had three years journalism really because sadly the IRA went wild and were bobbing their way across London. And the lucky thing was that I rode a bicycle, and so I got to the seat of the crime. Often before anyone else was anywhere near it. And all I had to find was somewhere to lock my bike up, and otherwise I had my tape recorder on my shoulder and dive straight in. And across if you're getting raw amazing revealing stuff, right there on the ground. It is much more powerful, even if it's not as good. It may not be great journalism, but it was very powerful radio, and people felt they were in the heart of it, and he were therefore thought to be a very good reporter, even though probably was a terrible reporter. You took over as channel four news news reader from Peter sissons after he absconded to the BBC. Was that always your end goal to read the news?.

"Of the most famous faces in broadcasting. John snow has been the face of the program since 1989. Over the course of three decades he has grilled every prime minister from Margaret Thatcher up to and including Theresa May, he drew the iconic words let bygones be bygones from Nelson Mandela, he shared a plane with Idi Amin reported on wars in Iran and crises in Vietnam. And it's not all been hard news. He has danced and sang on TV and even got stoned on camera. But he's also been accused of being too partisan of having political views that were too obvious and which undermine the network's impartiality. And so, at a time when the future of channel four is up for grabs, his words have come under unprecedented scrutiny. Jon Snow, welcome to the media show, and I guess before we start the first question is, you've got a few days left at channel four news, hoping for an interview with Boris Johnson? I'm absolutely standing ready and I have every hope that that phone call will come and I'll suddenly be able to say I've literally interviewed every prime minister since I started. And that would be your last scoop on California. Hey, what? Before we get stuck in, I just want to get one thing clear, which is how you see yourself. We know how we see you. But how do you see yourself? Do you see yourself as a newsreader first and foremost? Are you a reporter, digging for original journalism who just happens to read the news? I see myself as lucky. And on top of that, I'm a reporter. I am, I have nothing else, no other responsibility than to tell stories to tell the truth and to interrogate. Because you love being on the road, don't you? Oh, I love being on the road. That's the, that's the, that's the real arena of retrieving information and ideas and stories.

Owner really is stupid doc. Mary we looked back talking hopeless. She doesn't rock in that chair. Great heart though hard gold. Yeah all right. Let's move onto the dexter trailer. What do you think is it looking. Good it got it. Got got my Downpour on youtube no. It made me like very interested. Because like i've talked about like dexter is one of my favorite shows of all time. I loved the character of the first four seasons output up there pretty much anything i've watched and ever since then the decline was wasn't an immediate decline. It was an obvious drop in quality. But it's still very much watchable. Put the finale or something that is like the worst possible. Finale you can do. I feel like a good finale for that show could have saved it but Sounds like thrones. That really. Because i think game of thrones at the end like it's something where everyone's like remake season remakes using. It's like well we know what season eight like. That's the end that was supposed to be. The andrews has done poorly. And you can't like extent we're just gonna do a new season but we know where these characters engineers is dead like. We'll be pointless with this. Like dexter was left alive a non nothing ending. Well now we can get the guy who is there for the earlier seasons and the good stuff that come back and it's like sure some of the story ended but there's still a lot you can do with that character. Some of the characters aren't going to be there anymore anymore unfortunately but like for that character. There's still stuff to explore and like the show is dexter. I game of thrones wasn't just a john show if it was just a johnson jon snow show Then maybe you could take him going into while and three explore that cadre. There is so much so many other moving parts. Where dexter is more focused on dexter. So if you leave that window open. I think it's a more natural transition to be like. Okay maybe eight years later. Let's try to get the ending it deserves. And it's great to see michael c hall. Come back i think he is. One of the more underrated television actors of all time with that character. Obviously the bryan cranston james gandolfini and like the way he plays like character. I think he's like maybe not at that top level. But he's in a discussion. Est like some like one of the best leads. I think in the drama series over.

Amera is like stunning in the face. She's just so pretty. I am going to disagree with you you can. Yeah, I don't know there's okay. So I'm going to get into this so but that's just talk about Andrew first. Let's do it. He runs a daycare with Mommy know he wears Jon Snow cause play like in costumes as a night for the children. Yeah in the daycare where he works twelve to thirteen hours a day and then when he's alone after work, he likes to be alone and play tennis by himself and give himself a French braid. Well cuz he doesn't have friends. Do you think maybe he just doesn't have friends like it's not because he works so long. I don't like him. There is something very not. Okay about him. So he meets a Mera on a dating site and she's right years old and she loves makeup. She's half a Gyptian and half-french, right? And basically he she was on the app and two days later. She met Andrew and he has very weird video chats with her. I think that they're trying to listen. I don't know but I feel like they're trying to paint him as the great guy and her as the villain and I think it's the exact opposite. I think it might be too. So now he inhales helium and he's talking to us on helium balloons. It's like I love dating seven year old boys. That's what I mean. Like what's wrong with you you doing a mustache doesn't connect and it scares me. Yeah. He his hair has bald patches. So three days after they meet she flies to Vegas three days ago. He proposes and then she gets her K1 Visa a year later. But Corona happens Ryan, her visa is only good for 5 months, but there's a travel ban. So what they're going to do is they're going to go to Mexico. They're going to quarantine for fourteen days. And then they're going to come to the u.s. And keeps saying they have to quote unquote activate the Visa. Yeah, and his mom is like what I don't like this. Like what is this and I don't understand it's like some loophole. Okay. So also they yeah cuz they're not coming in that they're coming in through Mexico. So that that was I guess the loophole. Okay Noel. Yeah, they're running a daycare during a pandemic. No one has a mask on no way Jose California like the epicenter but I was going to like was there not Corona in California. Seriously, it's wild so she's packing for Mexico City in one suitcase. Is she bringing her? Yellow Paddington Bear rain jacket. What is she packing? Yes, and the thing is like do you who do you live with cuz you're not you're.

That there are three months to go to the election, and she's going to fly herself around the state. I don't know if that means every day or once a week or whatever. And just Ah, Here's the statement. First woman Marine to fly a combat mission. An F A 18 Hornet who That's a fancy plane. She won't be flying. One of those around the state would be very expensive. I know she has tons of money. Will be very expensive and rather ominous. Actually tohave a fighter, you know of killing machine flying around the state, it would look People would go. Oh, my God Trump sending the federal troops and there they go. The unknown federal troops get a get one of those. Laser beam things and try to blind the planet. Yeah, don't do that. I'll send you right to the federal pokey. Well, wait a minute. That was back when we had laws and laws were observed that maybe it won't. I wouldn't do that if I were, you know. Amy McGrath plans to fly herself across Kentucky to every region. Now we have 120 counties. We don't have 120 airports. We have a lot of airports. I've landed at many of them. I've been flying airplanes for a long time to what I would like to do is a matter of fact. Since Amy McGrath will not speak to me or has not in the last couple of years she did During the last campaign, she ran. I think she doesn't like Ian. That's what I think it couldn't be me. It's not personal. I talked to people from all walks of life. So Ian must have done something to upset Amy McGrath. Nonetheless, many people don't like me. That's just how it works. I've sent emails Ian and sent e mails. We don't even get replies. Have you gotten a reply in because Oh, no, Never They don't even answer us likes like they just go in a whole, you know? Yeah, they do. We're in the spam file. So what I propose is something that I did a long time ago when Doug McKelvin worked here. I will fly myself around the state behind Amy McGrath's airplane if she'll give me an interview on one of the airports somewhere here in Kentucky. There. I'm throwing that one out there and all it does is gives you a program. I'd be on for a few hours. Where would I be talking? Hey, I'm flying today and we're following Amy McGrath around the state and I would just be what's not going to be a flight of two like where you're flying next to each other, But I You know, they would have to tell me their destination and then I would fly my own aircraft to that destination. McKelvin went with me. Years ago. We did this and we gave out prizes. I don't even know when this was the early nineties, maybe, and I just did an afternoon show on the reason I had McKellen's. He knew enough about flying toe where he could also handle the radio controlled the W H s radio controls and I would fly the airplane, but he could also sort of be a little bit of a back up for me like a flight students. And so we were able to do that, because you know, I have to pay attention when I'm on the air, and then he would know to just hold the airplane and the altitude and then we go to our destination and we landed in a bunch of airports and handed people stuff. It was fun. So I would like to do this thing that I'm just I'm throwing this out here. For the Indian McGrath. People who ignore us and act like we don't exist. We're just trying to give you some air time so you can talk about your side of the story. Mitch McConnell's on here occasionally is not only that often, but Hey, does come on to the show, and I think he's been on with Tony Cruz before Senator McConnell I'm talking about, But I don't know that Amy McGrath has appeared on any of our shows, You know, in several years, and I don't know why. I'm not going to bite anybody's head off. I talked to Democrats and Republicans and independents and people from all walks of life. That's that's the flow of the show as it's been for 40 years, so I'm just throwing that out there extra, and I'm not gonna bill your campaign for my fuel. Any of that stuff. I will. I will just take it on as a personal expense just to get the interview to get the job done. All I'm worried about, though, is we're in the air. Here's Amy McGrath flying there. I'm at a safe distance, and I just want to warn Amy McGrath and advanced. She's rusty. I don't know how often she flies anymore. But here's a phrase we always use in flying situational awareness. A name a grass radar, But you'll have to know your situational awareness. You'll have two. That'll have to be on point at all times because we won't be the only aircraft in the air. There's also the papa chopper. That's Jon Snow water, You know, he posted that Tic tac video with the The brazen, garish, narcissistic headline. Did you know I have my own helicopter. He doesn't have anything else to do. So they post things online about how rich he is in the middle of a pandemic, with unemployment at alarming rates off the charts rates like the Great Depression, But he's showing us his helicopter and that guy will fly himself to go get a sandwich didn't fly himself. Some other guy does that forum, But we will have to look at being the lookout for the Papa chopper, which is wandering around aimless aimlessly a lot like Amy's campaign direction sometimes. Well, we don't understand the whole direction. So let's keep it our keeper. Eyes open on that. Just looking for the other air traffic. That's important. No joy so far back in a minute here on news radio, 8 40 W. H S. This report is sponsored by the podcast for gotten women of what is use radio..

"Found a way to inoculate teens from eating fast food, possibly, maybe. What's the secret? It's Photoshop to Photoshop contest premise that. We did at cracked. Okay. Yeah. I like when you're reading this you jumps to say you already did the study. I did this. Okay. Well, let me explain to people who might not be the study you had already performed essentially they found a way to get teens eating healthier by making them feel rebellious. Right. So the things they founded this experiment. So they during what they call the intervention where they just present these kids with information the intervention produce an enduring change in both boys and girls immediate gut level emotional reactions to junk food marketing messages and teenage boys. When it came to giving up junk foods started making healthier drink and food choices in their school cafeteria almost immediately. So basically, they read an article that framed corporations as being manipulative with their marketing and like making junk food as addictive as possible. So the truth. Population. Yeah. Like, the, you know, low income young people, right? And they frame it. As though like, this is a very specific article that they presented to these kids. But you'd get the same message from sitting inside one of those companies marketing or sales meetings like that's what they do. Right. So anyways after presenting that with them, they gave these kids the ED's for some of the products that those companies sell end just get told them to make it true by writing like, basically graffiti style on top of the ads to let corral some of the some of the misconception can rebels. Sick. I've had graffiti lachey fucking put a mustache on this, dude. And blackout one of his teeth on enjoy a burrito.
