Ian Happ on Jon Lester’s Impact: 'He Changed This Organization'

"John lester he leaves a legacy here. We all know that we all know what an incredible human being is. But for you personally. What did john mean to you. I know you guys were really really close. What he teach you. What kind of life lessons and baseball lessons did he give to. So that you could have your own your own path and your own career. John john taught me how to be a pro. You know from from that first year in two thousand seventeen It really took me under his wing And and just taught me all the little things that go into preparing He was the most prepared player. Most prepared pitcher. I've ever seen The way that he went about his bullpens the way he went about his day before. Prep i think he taught a lot of of guys that he played with how to do that. and it was just so amazing to watch him compete. He was one of the guys that You'd run through a wall for every day Being behind them and it was such a privilege to get to the play with him for a few years and to get to experience that for me. He's a no doubt hall of famer if he changed his organization And i can't say enough good things about what he's done for me personally As a baseball player and just as a person

"Give you a little Terrell Brown. Be right out there in front. Behind me, is the home of Daniel Zimmerman's. It's It's scary stuff, because when it goes right to voice mail And it's almost show time. Then you you think the worst like what happened there, right. Right. So that's It scared me. I'll be honest. I appreciate it. You know, I felt like Ebeneezer Scrooge for a minute where I got to see the ghost of Christmas future Like so I was dead and you guys were all remember me And I appreciate I thought cat maybe would have been a little bit more choked up. Like I expected tears from cap. No shot. He's good with those. I thought, maybe you know, honey, I felt nice. Nice eulogy. Yeah, it was written is right here. Written ready to go. I didn't know what to expect. So you always gotta be ready, right? Got to be ready. And so you weren't here for the meeting? The meeting was capped talking about cap. Of course, Danny. He's not here. People is Jon Lester. They shot I'm gonna drill in the day I was working. I'm speaking. Jon Lester. I'm driving. I'm driving in and I hear you guys talking about Jon Lester. You're making it personal. And I didn't understand why this is like the Cubs treating Jon Lester Crappy. I want to talk to you about that. They absolutely did. They're broke. They just can't afford him. It's not personal. They're broke. They made an offer as soon as he got another offer after telling him when he reached out to the owner. Yeah, we can't make any officer. Maybe they didn't have the money at the time when the nationals made the offer, And then the money came. It was called Cover your ass. So if anyone says today that comes making offer Yeah, after I already got the offer when he called them and said What do you want to pay me? Three million. Let's just get a deal done. I don't want to go anywhere else. They had a food bar that they had to try to look for the money. Was it in sometimes secret Treasure chest wasn't in the bags of Crown Royal It is the empty benches found some million forum. If feels here, Lester's a couple least for one more year. You could just tell things are changing over there. Our next segment. We'll talk about a white Tyler Chatwood no longer here with the Cubs that also tells a story. I wait a minute. He's a blue Jake all right, five years 55 for him for the Blue Jays. Uh, same deal. Exactly. Uh, we'll play shot or no shot. "He became a free agent after the Cubs declined his $25 million option for next year, and he made sure fans Knew how grateful he was for their support since he signed with the Cubs, Lester tweeted on Friday that he would be paying for everyone's first Miller light it for different Chicago bars over the weekend. And he shared an update yesterday he tweeted out some information indicating that 3466 beers had been put on his tab. Totalling $25,637.90, including a gratuity. He said he had received a credit card fraud alert on Saturday. For all the charges, but pretty cool thing. Don't you think I'm looking at the tweet from Lester? Nice work, Chicago. And The list. The number of Miller Lites mentions his fraud alert and And the total number of beers on his tab. And then he said yesterday, let's finish strong today and mask up. Damn it. You gotta love Jon Lester, and by the way, he tipped more than 20%. No. Yeah, well, you know what? Hey, he can afford it right? But still, but he still doesn't have to. That's right. And he didn't have to do what he did for Chicago fans. Thank you, Jon Lester. Stand by on you and Page six people are talking about the bearers lost in overtime against the Saints and Soldier field yesterday. At least it wasn't a tie at you know, I was thinking last night. If this ends in a tie, I'm going to feel like I just wasted my whole Sunday. I know. I know what I would have been better than the Bear's losing, technically speaking, but It didn't end the way any of us wanted to. And Dan Hampton will join us after the 7 A.m. news to talk more about that, But you know that way. What can you say? It's just the offenses still sputtering, isn't it? I mean, the defense there on the field a lot and I guess they they played OK, don't you think that's what the defense played well and look, they don't have a chance in that game. If the defence Rowe Kwan Smith had his best game is a bear. You know now that said, you still see so much inconsistency there offensively and that's the thing they have to get fixed. If they want to. Have the second half of the season anything close to what they had in the first half. And they're gonna have a tough game on Sunday at Tennessee. There already underdogs for that game, You know that's Ah, a noon game. Yeah, there is that. The thing about it, though, Bob is that they still have they have two games to go with Green Bay. Down the road here. They've got the Vikings and the Vikings one yesterday at Lambeau, but division games so They can still kind of get this thing straightened out. But they can't wait. You know, they've got to do it now. We should talk about more pleasant things like your Northwestern Wildcats. Yes, yes to Odo. How about that after coming from 17 down TTO win at Iowa on Saturday. Now they will come home and take on Nebraska and it's It's one of those years where you have per duo and Northwestern, both to a no. In the Big 10 West. And, of course, Wisconsin's one note. They didn't play this week. They're supposed to play Purdue on Saturday. We'll see if that game happens. 22 positive Koven 19 tests for the Badgers I I have a feeling That today. We're going to hear about more cases in the big 10. It just has to be. I mean, if you talk to anybody at college right now. It seems like everybody's got the virus. Some people do really well with it. Young people for the most part two, but still it's running rampant. Well, I know you. Ah, your daughter's works with the football team in Illinois. They got hit over the weekend. They lost their starting quarterback for 21 days as Wisconsin did last week and They had a bunch of cases. Bunch of guys who couldn't play because of contact tracing for their game against Purdue. And, yeah, I mean, it's you got to believe there's more common. Well, I would not. It's not just the big 10. I mean, you saw the The guy was likely likely the Heisman Trophy favourite. Now, depending he's going to miss this week's game again. Trevor Laurence quarterback for Clemson missed their game against Boston College. He's out again this week, so It's it's It's pretty much a national thing. The Pac 12 starts playing this week. The Mid American Conference starts playing this week. We'll see how those conferences fair. And I can't wait. Teo get Dan Hamptons review of the of the fight that happened on your fight, Really? Although certainly the roar punches thrown that you normally see in one of those didn't start when somebody liked it. The three Stooges move through the through the face. Well, that's what TV went back and showed that with with with Anthony Miller, I think it wass. With the player who ended up getting the was the CJ gardener Johnson, who got the the punch from from from the whims, but you know, it's just that he got to keep your composure in those situations as As tough to do is that maybe everything kind of went downhill Pretty quick and well read and next play fool's got picked off. So after he poked him like they put them in the eye, you know to start all that ruckus. Did he go after he did that? Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Yeah, That's.

"I don't think he's a guy. I trust the whole lot. So I would have Milton that number three Thanks, Steve. Thank you for the phone call Call again, All right? There's also a new interesting, you know. It's a strategy that Jesse floated as well. Where if you don't want Lester to be your third pitcher. What if he pitched your second game and then Hendrix pitcher third game If you needed him to like you, Darvish goes out there gets you win. I know you don't like mess around. I don't like messing around either. You know why I lose the first two and then what's the point? But do you trust Jon Lester in a must win situation? I mean, I would rather start the better picture sooner. No, I agree. Like I'm not. I'm not playing that game. Where? Yeah, Well, we'll take care of business here and there and you know if we need him Done and restart your best pictures. I agree with you, then you could also start Hendricks in Game one of the next Siri's Tio. We'll get to the next series First. That's true to go with the home in away splits. For Kyle Hendricks in his career at home. He is 35 20 in 85 games start. Away. He's 33 27 87 games, his e. R. A at home 2.58 his e. R A. On the road 3.75. He's given up 57 home runs on the Road and 45 at Wrigley Field. So I mean, he is a much better picture at the friendly confines. Ideally for the Cubs, Should they win the division? That first round will be at home, So you should probably that goes to the theory of Should you wait in pigeon in games? I mean, doesn't really matter cause all three or at home so If you need him, he will be at home for the first for the wild card. Siri's at least and then all the all the games on the road for every team. Essentially in this in the bubble in the postseason, those huge art Darvish have a chance to win the Cy Young. We'll talk about it. Next baseball show with Chicago's home for Sports, ESPN, 1000.

"You brought up Jon Lester and I thought the most interesting thing about this is Jon Lester is I can say Howard asked at this time of the morning. He's a guy that has been through 24 7. Yes, School is ah, Utah. I love talking to him in the clubhouse. And you know, conversation could go on for 10 minutes or 20 minutes or 30 minutes and you walk away thinking boy? That guy knows baseball. I just learned something right? And I was concerned when earlier in the week and after his last starter to heed voiced concerns about his confidence going forward. That's not Jon Lester. We know That's not him. Now He's 36. Obviously, you know, the end is nearing its always nearing for all of us. But as a baseball player, the end is nearing for him. This is his last year with the Cubs under contract. And he wants to perform the best He can, and he's not been happy with what's been going on. But I was watching the Marquis network on the post game last night, and they were breaking down how Lester attacked the Brewers yesterday with his cutter and four seamer. He got 16. Swings and misses 12 of the 16 rounds cutter in his four seamer yesterday, and he was able to do pitch well, do everything he could possibly do to get the Cubs to get a win last night. They just couldn't hit Brandon Woodruff earlier this year. They have better success against. I think he's pitched against only three times. So, but you got to get some hits, but I was happy to see Jon Lester. Now, if I'm Lester, I go in the locker room and listen. I busted my tail to try and keep us in games. Let's go. Let's pick it up. We've got 2.5 a little more than two weeks to go. Let's hold onto this first place position might might question the Cubs fans is 3123323776 people always talk about the window, The windows wide open all the windows closed. And this this feels like you got like a popsicle stick trying to hate hold the window up and that stick is bending right now because of your big guys Don't hit on field talked about it a couple days ago. Apparently, they didn't get the memo or they got it for a day. Right? For one inning. Anyone? Yeah, If you're big guys are going to hit. You can't win in baseball. Nowadays, it's just pitching is only going to get you so far. Even if you're pitching is doing well.

"How's Skye? Kal Jon Lester on the mound? Abdullah. It's time for a star of the night. Johnny's own base percentage before seven stat off the night. Clemens on base 24 now made was to nine on the baseball show that up, you get Every street 10 90 on ESPN 1000 Tonight. Stat of the night. 62 Wait Well, Hola, 60 to 62. So when we do this, I have a stat ready And you can usually have a stat ready Because I just like, you know, to stand off and mine is also 62. You have matching 62. I think so. Who wants to go first? You want to give yours first? No, you go first, even you We did the nice intro on everything, and I just can't interrupt. So you go first tonight. Saturday night 62. The White Sox have won 62 games against the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have won 60 the record between the two teams. The Siri's record is 62 60 Tonight, Stab the night is 62. And Abdullah. The last time the White Sox won this Siri's was back in 2014. The Cubs have won every Siri's or There have been ties. 2014 has been a lot of ties, or 60 two's A stab in my stead of the night is also 62. This comes from Jason Benetti and Elias Sports. The White Sox and Cubs are playing 620.620 baseball combined at a 62% average. They've never played against each other with a better combined winning percentage. So also is 62 about that. That's pretty good about that. It's a pretty good Ah, that's pretty good for the baseball show here in the first week, some good stats. I'm excited for the Cubs in the White Sox because this should be a good benchmark. Spot here in this season, because when we come back for our show on Tuesday night Monday, we will be carrying on NBA basketball here on ESPN 1000 Tuesday night, though we will discuss The halfway point in Major league baseball season. It's gotten here quick in the second half is upon us. So we'll go through our mid season awards on Tuesday night's show here on the baseball show. That's kind of the problem with us talking about slumps and guys playing well, not really a problem playing well, but it's like, Well, can they keep this up for a whole season? Dude, there's 30 games left in the playoffs, start believing the whole season. Is a month of baseball left and then the playoffs start and then and then That's it. Then you're done. It's crazy. But that's what it is. So people the guys there something come out need to come out of their slums. The guys they're hitting will need to continue their success. "And it's always great to talk to Jon Lester he started everything when he signed with the cubs back in twenty fifteen he led them to a World Series in twenty sixteen and he joins us right now on the corona hot line John always great to talk to you so this spring training get older is it still as good as it's ever been and I love spring training it it's a good time of the year you know you are last year we had a a longer all season so you know to get back out here get some warm weather and get around the guys is always fun you know I think when you look the more more you do you know you got to figure out what works and what doesn't work out routine but yeah man it's good it's good to be back it's good to be around the guys you know a lot of energy a lot of focus to camp right now and if you guys are excited to go John how is camp different with with David Rawson charge versus what you experience the last several years with Joe all well I mean I think that's the kind of comparing apples and oranges you know I and I think they both have their unique ways of going about business and and I I I love the way Joe did thing with doing it when he was here it was it was always a pleasure to have camp with him in the season and all that you know I think Rossi just being new to everything I think is you know he's gonna be more energetic you're going to be kind of more in your face or something but the way can't going right now is great and the guys are excited guys are focused on on the stuff I need to get done yeah I mean I don't think you could really compare ministers to different styles that that kind of go about things in different ways and and both very positive way Jon Lester joining us it's waddling selfie on ESPN one thousand more to that I mean have you noticed the difference between David Ross the player in the guy who came over with you when you played with in Boston verses David Ross the manager is the the same guy I think guys different title I think that's what's been fun to see us so far eight specs the same thing that he expected out of me when we pay when we played together five days so you know the accountability the the effort of preparation the focus the attention to detail and I was stuff that he always prided himself on and he he made sure that I was locked into those as well on the on the day that that are occurring over to him being in kind of the same guys as far as on the field with us right now one thing I've been surprised with this is you know he hasn't changed because he has a new title and I think that that's hard for anybody you know when you read you get promotions are you move up in and to not feel like you have to change that the stuff that he has done to this point in his life and and then in this career is going to work and just a different title he still buses shops or can you not do that now because your manager and not just to capture no you know you can I mean he's he's still I think that's what's gonna make everything you need you know I think he on the line when you're here you know he acted use your boss and and you're you're respectful that it you know all that but when it comes down to also you know you still bodies and you still have to keep everybody accountable you know a lot of that that goes for the players to the manager to the other coaches so that we give our time job with the same guy you know I think when when the lights turn on we get going to you know things are gonna change a little bit but I think it's all gonna be for the good water when I we're debating this yesterday in the wake of a lot of comparisons because a geo and now because the David Ross you played for at least a handful of managers like how much of a difference does a manager make at the end of the day whether the club was good or not arm I think a lot I mean I think you know the managers the team is the extension of the manager you know and I I I've been fortunate enough to play for a lot of good ones and and so is it so drop the and I think he's using those experiences are from guys like Terry Francona from guys like John feral you know guys like Joe obviously the most recent one to kind of you know kind of figure out his way I think the biggest thing is is you you you you are in that respect for your players in the and all those guys have Joe definitely did that in you know obviously the Rossi doing that as well so yeah I mean we're just an extension of him going out there playing and and hopefully we do that well for Mister John hobby talked about preparation I know the front office is talked about accountability the last year or so but from the veterans perspective why did you guys get to where you needed to be and wanted to be last year I mean if we do that we would have moved on further you know baseball the funny sport and that's why we play a hundred sixty to a woman you know I've been a part of you know close to a hundred loss teams I've been part of teams that have you know one hundred plus games that have been party instead of like the playoffs by one game and you know I've been a part of a lot of things and I think if you knew what made each team specials for the ones that go on and and actually went that you'd be able to duplicate that every year or replicate that every year and it's just hard man you got a battle injuries you got guys that that try to fight through think they can't then you have a little bit of a lark you got to have everybody going you know like I said if if if it was one thing that you put your finger on it we were expected move on and and be better and and sometimes you just can't fix those areas and and unfortunately we weren't able to and and you know we as a result we had a longer offseason personally John how do you feel about your two thousand and nineteen performance and how will that affect you going forward what you expected two thousand at twenty and I was obviously not very good last year you know kind of example could couple different things that you don't have to put a finger on it either earlier put a finger on it all with a fixed it we've been a better picture than I was last year but you know that year I learned a lot about you know moving forward to you know get older and and figure out what I have and don't have and what I can and can't do and you know you just learn front move on and and this year of your good everything's been going well mossy the program was great their own actually was good starting this year so and I'm just I'm looking forward to the twenty you're not only personally but for this team I think we I think we're a good place that's good to hear Jon Lester joining us waddling selfie on ESPN one thousand you just mentioned getting older I mean you're thirty secs so like you know the question comes up Hey what is Jon Lester have left in the tank what do you respond with I mean a lot I mean I like I said I I I feel good my programs my goodness this offseason you know I feel like I'm in a better place right now than I was you know this time last year as far as physically mechanically the way the ball kind of responding to what I'm trying to do on the mound right now so I mean I don't know if that translates into anything going forward you know I mean that's the whole point of the season and and working to get to that but you know right now feels good and awfully can continue to build off of what what we've been doing I DO channel we talked to you last year at spring training you tell those lucky you lead by example you you're not often around rock guy Kris Bryant this offseason has gone through a lot of trade rumors you dealt with that in Boston you did get traded will you give our have you given any advice to Chris Brian and how to deal with all this I think Chris is fine he's a Big Boy you know I mean he's I think the first time you your name your little surprise then you can ask questions but you know I think at the end of the day he's done a very good job of of separating the business aspect of this game and then the personal aspect that that we all really love to be a part of you know it sucks sometimes when you have that reality of this is actually a business and you know that the the cubs are trying to run the club the best way they can and if that was to involve him in a trade or any of us in a trade you know I I it's hard at first but it's you just kinda you kind of figure out as you go and I think you've done a good job answering questions about it I think he feels like he's in a good place he looks good you know it is internal surveys the looks like just normal Chris out there smiling and enjoying the game so I mean if you ever ask me for advice than that I'm there for but I think when somebody is dealing with it pretty well like years you know you don't wanna you don't want to beat a dead horse for for lack of a better a better term he had a couple of times during our talk right now about nineteen and I thought after that as a cubs fan after the nineteenth season that feel would really go to work are you surprised at the lack of change at all with person now now we got a good team I mean I don't I mean I think people just sometimes want change to change you know no real reason behind it is the fact that you just want something new we have a very good thing I mean we have three guys that are gonna be running all start every year should be current all stars every year now with that being said we we need we need those guys to be healthy you know I need Chris right to be healthy and the hobby to be healthy and it raised to be healthy and when they're able to stay in there like and and be healthy in that aspect of their games and you'll see the talent you'll see that the production come out you know you got you coming off of an injury year and then kind of trying to figure out himself again and I think he did that I'm excited for his for his twenty campaign to see what you can really do and and get after it get Kimbrough back into what he is you know it's a hard position we put him in last year to come in it's never really worked out I'm excited for him we got a good scene I mean I know we have some questions that all teams have questions you never have a full one hundred percent roster alike yeah this is the guy at every position but I love our god to love the way we compete I love I love our attitude will grab everybody seems a good place to get stuff done working hard John bigger picture what what bothers you most about this Astros cheating scandal I don't know man I'm kind of I don't know I I I I want to get back to talking.

"So you get you get to kind of I don't wanna say mentor, but you get to help guys out a little bit more when you're playing golf and we've got some good golfer. So it makes a lot of fun that is so true. Because when you're on a golf course, it's five hours where you're going to be out there hanging out. And they always say that that's where you really get to know people get to spend that kind of time with somebody where they can kind of go haymaking. I ask you something you like. Yeah. Of course, for sure, and it's cool, man. Because like I said when you get to that. House know business time like this is work. I'm at work. So I'm I'm focused on what I have to do today in order to be ready to go whenever my my day is and those guys are the same way like ham getting ready to be in the game tonight. So it's go time. So it's nice like you said, this decompress, take a deep breath, and and just have some fun. The one time in the clubhouse or maybe during the game where someone came up. It was like he look, right. I know that. In the middle. Oh, yeah. You'd like did you really just ask me if I'm staying connected. You'll see some guys will get new clubs during the season. They'll get new putter sent whatever and everybody over there locker and Bill. Can you give me a left hand in one? But like you said it's a long season. So you've got to break up the monotony of it and make it make it enjoyable because it can be a grind. I mean. I'm sure it is out here for these guys to I mean, it's their seasons probably longer than ours. Obviously, they can pick and choose a little bit more. But it's still a long year. Patrick Peterson told us that there's been ties where golf has lingered into the locker room between he and Larry FitzGerald because they go at it. All the time has there been a time where intense golf has lingered in the club. No. The only time that that I've seen it. And it's actually funny is when you do a shirt off somebody and they were to the field that day. You know that that's when it gets fun because you're walking around the clubhouse. And you're like you just kind of like. Would you guys played here? Guys stand right next to you. So that's that's fun. To get to kinda get back at people, especially you know, a couple guys that maybe two or three times in a row and you finally win one. And you're just like they were go. I'm a little bit to put my put my uniform. We asked. Everybody comes on the podcast with us on this. One your dream foursome who's filling out the other three live we play dead or alive. That's a hard one. I gotta go tiger. I mean, I think that's my generation kind of my dad's Jack nNcholas Arnold Palmer and think that's he probably got more people in the Gulf than anybody in probably the history of the sport. Man, that's hard. I probably wouldn't do a baseball guy. I would probably do like. Probably like a tiger, Jordan. Okay. Gone, but he's not bringing his wallet. He's gotta leave. Doing that gambling nonsense. He does. I don't know, man. I don't know who my fourth would be. I'd probably just bring like my dad and something like that. You know, be a part of that being able to play five hours with your dead. And then tiger and Jordan to that's one of those that we'll talk about forever. Give me a golf course. It's on your bucket list. Man. What's the nicest course you've played? So far Augusta. Yeah. I guess too. I got to play to Gotten to play play against. against six. Oh, right. Got sick media lottery. Not to two years ago for the first time played it right after Sergio one. Okay. We all have that..

"And a caddy and the best thing you said when we came up and who was like, hey, man, how you doing? And you response was on here playing golf that easy. Sometimes right. It can't be it can't be get out of the we've had a bad winter up there in Atlanta this year raining all that stuff. So I haven't been able to get out hunting and fishing and golfing as much as I would have liked to get down here. Even though it's a little cold outside golfing. So it's all good. How many more outings do you have before you? Really start to lock in and get ready for spring training coming up. I got a little bit. I've been working out pretty much since November Fogo so Mefin good with where I'm at probably need to pick up the throne a little bit, you know, as far as intensity wise in the next couple of weeks. But. I feel good man played catch. You know, probably what was it about a week ago? And it actually felt pretty good for the first time. For that first week. I was like man, this is actually isn't bad. So it's been going. I always thought bow hunting it would help a little bit. That's that's not we talked still. It kills me. I didn't get to come up and do a little bow hunting. You're always welcome. You just gotta holler. Let me know. But it so we I don't bow hunt as much because I got my kids now. So they wanna go sit in a stand with me and do all that. So we take the we take the rifle out there. But we have a good time up there. It's fun, especially now that my oldest son. He's eight he killed his first oh last year got another one this year. So he's he's fired up. I I it's cool. It's you know, what it's it's hard because I'm so safety conscious. I'm more worried about what easy. Yeah. What he's doing as opposed to actually the deer. This year was was was crazy because I had my middle kid with us too. So he's he's five. So we had five and eight in there with me. And I'm just like, it's it's a cluster, but. So, but it's good. It's a good feeling when when they get excited for it was first outdoor sport for John Lester, wasn't hunting fishing or Gulf outdoor sport was probably baseball. Oh. Probably phishing. I grew up fishing in the north west. That was my my dad didn't hunt. I'm getting him into the hunting now. So I got to see him kills I buck and all that stuff. So it was cool, but probably fishing, and then golf as I got older who got you into Gulf by dad and my grandpa and my dad's dad, my dad's dad was left handed, so he'd he'd take me to the driving range and try to give me the lefty pointers and helped me out. So yeah, those two my dad would always take me in the summer when we had time. And there was a little recourse read it from our our house, and he dropped me off there in on his way to work and pick me up on the way back, and I'd just walk around that nine holes of bunch and and have phone Gulf was with you from when you were little then. Yeah. I mean, it was and I played it. And I I enjoyed it. But I really didn't start kind of getting into it and trying to get better at it until probably I got to pro ball and probably really the big leagues. And then you got Josh Beckett. And wait. 'field taking out you gotta you gotta start playing. Well, you can't be throwing up. They was talking. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Everybody says baseball club houses, one of the most competitive places for the go. Oh, yeah. So we, you know me being young..

And I don't know if that's wrong, right? Or what it is? But I don't tell me. I never have is that a thing. I think it used to be back in the day. But I don't you know, where I did. You know, what I did leave gratuity though? I left gratuity at. The on the cruise ship for the person who was doing the guy who was our a cruise ship attendant in the room. I slid him at the end of the cruise. I slid him a little something some just to say was okay. Because like he he he went above and beyond. He was he was doing. He was fixing our room twice a day. Yeah. And like leaving little stuff for the kids around which was he was doing stuff. He didn't have to do and for and for those who are matting academy. Patriots our podcast. You know, what a high maintenance travel Michael is anyway coffee need, and as we were checking into the hotel last night, and he had them give him seven Coffey. There's what do you mean? I have them. They said you can come down. Here's this, blah, blah, blah. And you said we'll meet it. Wow. Offer coffee, and I go I don't have to because Ardy bought coffee and the only thing. Just got the wrong filters. And the guy goes, well, sir. We we could give you filters. We have the right filters for that coffee maker. And I was like what for real? And I was willing to go macgyver style on filters that I had towels. I bet he goes then you guys sound like it was like. Let me tell you, sir. I'm need them filters. And in the guy goes, how many would you like any seven 'cause I'm ending end. The magic goes smart move seven nights seven filter. I find it. And the guy goes, I'm giving your eight. So you got an extra one in case you wanna make extra I find it. Absurd. That you have your own coffee set up. Everytime. You go onto road. Just go down the street and get a Cup. Do not. Because of what time, you know? I have a routine I know you route to see I don't end people don't need to see me before coffee. So if I leave and because we're all so much better off of after seeing you after coffee, one of the first things, I was told when I first started ESPN was don't end up on deadspin. We're told that. Yeah. It must put that vibe out there. That's what I'm saying..

So I get a round of beers for the boys and the beers or twenty one twenty two dollars twenty one to twenty twenty two bucks for if you buy a bunch of beer for everyone. Yeah. Then you to you. Yeah. You rounded up to twenty five around it up to twenty five what is the except that amount to tip a bathroom attendant. I'm not tipping him. Nothing. I don't know. Why? No. Because you're me out being in their number one. His job is to hand, you nice warm towel. I don't need you hand me. Anything? I don't need. You don't you? Don't reach a handout to me when we in the bathroom, but he's nowhere near your stated on the fact that he's there while you're going to the bathroom. He's just standing in a bathroom. He's by the sink. I don't care. He's been hired to do a job. I don't look if you if you're just standing in a bathroom. I am sorry that life has taken such a bad turn for you. I'm sorry. But I'm not number one dollar for what for giving you a towel pumping. The soap dispenser for you. Don't don't do that. No. That's nothing. It's hold. So like what's wrong with that? That's their job eight dollar two dollars. No, you never bought an toyed guy. Would spray a lot of drug car curve on you? Let me taste when I go to the club the colognes already. Good to go. I'm not going. And if I if something happens where I need to re up to Cologne. Yeah. Then it's time for me to go. I don't need to be in the club. No, more and their whole. I don't understand. You are fascinated with the Univer took a mint from the listen. There is nothing that you're doing in the bathroom that should require you to need a mint after the fact when he's look you would have it a couple of cocktails, maybe shot a Yeager. Maybe it's like, look, you know, what I'll throw an toyed in their new. I just don't understand. Why you're you're in and out. So he was so you're show pro the little man getting paid on PJ tour, but the little man that's trying to make ends meet make some extra money bathroom that dollar. That's the creepy guy. He's doing what he can make money. Okay. Cool, by the way. Just so you guys know Collins also doesn't tip valet people. That is not true. That is not true due to comes to bring your car. It's calms valet. No, no, no, no. If it's required. If if you force me to use valet and don't give me a choice, then that means you're actually than the valley that working there, you're paying them. Well about tipping. I'm not tipping. When you force me to. Tim. Here's the thing. It's not to a tip is saying, thank you. You went above and beyond. What you need to do. Now at tip is part of the income of the job know, what tips not called what salary. You know? Why? Because okay, I'm sorry. So you make a salary. Plus what tips right. So you can't say, okay. When I go to work today. I'm gonna make thirty bucks, but valley guy comes up to you and says if you're forced to use valet. Yes. A part of that job is gratuity for what for getting your car. Thanks for not bringing car back with a dent. What do you run two miles less less more miles on it? I cannot believe the hypocrisy with which you talk tipping. Look if you forcing me to do something. I'm not I'm not with that. Okay. Then uber. They have provided a valet service for you. These kids are running around getting your.

"That's all I'm trying to say is maybe what he's the pro because he wins with Woody at and guess, what would got ten percents. That's just full-time business. Oh, no. That doesn't matter that doesn't matter. I look let me put to things out on the record one. I don't believe he should have gotten ten percent, which I've said, I'm, but I believe he should have gotten more. Okay. Yes. I believe he should have gotten a little bit. The fact that we the circumstances in which they reached a deal, but we also know that we live in a world of perception deception is real especially now a spa. Now, especially in social media. So if you're telling me that coups comes out and says Ono paid them more than three thousand but less than ten percent. It's not a story. What's the big where there's smoke and somebody goes, it's not a story. Wait a minute. There's a story. Thank you. It's not a story as a Kim to no comment. Oh, why no comment? Thank you. What's going on? The other thing is coochie could easily come out and been like, hey, man. Look, he go. Here's what I here's. I wrote this due to check. Yeah. Yeah. Here you go. Like, this is what I pay the real. Here's what will happen. Sure. As the sun comes up on Madina caddy. What will happen is Cooper will end up paying this guy at some point some sort of bonus. Because I don't believe that he's going to be able to let this go in the last thing he need now. Going into the west coast. Swing Florida swing the players that well, you know, what I'll give coup. This when this story came out when he was still going on. Yeah. So he still wanting to Sony Open came out of what Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. So he stat at Sony. Oh enough gumption to get the job done and win Sony at the time volt, but here's the problem. Yeah. It's where this event happened. It's in Mexico, and you've made the comment, and I've made the comment we speculated in different areas that let's just say cooter did pay this guy a little bit more money and the guy that caddied for him doesn't want people in his area. No in he just got a huge windfall for safety purposes that yes. Yes. The opposite. You don't think? What do you mean? I'm thinking that. It's it's going to be a problem for cooter. I don't think you will go back unless he makes his whole, correct? And hey, go back. That's if he if he don't make this dude if he ain't ten percent in this going to be a problem, and we're going to be a problem, we watch too much narcos. No. Because now we think because coach is going to go across the board and playing this tournament he's going to have the Sinoloa cartel waiting for him. It ain't it ain't that there would be waiting for something. But the problem is if something were to go wrong. Yeah. Who's coming to help you I agree. And that's the thing. That's what you gotta think about look when things don't go right in another country. If you wrong somebody from that country guess who's coming to help you nobody from that country. Yeah. We we there's so much speculative stuff here that we we all believe that Gillis. Has the story. Yes. But do we believe there's layers to it that we just don't know? Yes. I think that we're all agreement on that. While we had the patriots here. We're talking about that coocher in the tipping etiquette with the with the pro player and caddy. Let's let. Hugh think that you should tip of bathroom attendant. Yeah. Like, let's go some tipping protocol for the people. What should you tip? Not a guy like you who's anal about his clubs, and who is worried about all of that a normal Brad and Chad finishing up their round of golf, dude. Wipes down to clubs cleans the clubs. What is what is an accepted about of money to tip them at a standard golf course would say five if you got to force them five dollars to twenty dollars a group twenty bucks force?.

So if you guys fifteen and a half, loft. Under your tent, but looking for that driver was sixteen degrees. What do you got the looks like a non iron looks like a driver plays? I it. It's all like when we come out to these events. It's so fun to see the celebrities mixed with the the people within the industry, we'd be remiss with isn't LPGA event. It's a no cut event, that's champions. Every winner from the PGA is here. They don't get Cup. You're mixing we saw. We are. Josh Donaldson was on the driving range yesterday. And there's an LPGA pro which will remain nameless would was watching. Donaldson hit the ball who hits. The ball is good as I've seen wedding, including a pro. So let's do the reenact those. She heard him hit one drive and didn't see it and then turned around, and he had he had this ping G four hundred for and he unleashed it. And I'll make the sound of the driver made. And then Mattio make the sound that the tour pro made. And it went dislike this. Oh. And her face laughing because she couldn't like she reacted. How we would do you know, what she reacted like someone who's never been to a baseball game. Would react standing next to the batting cage. When Josh hit a home run. Yeah. You know, like I mean ever seen something hit that hard in that far. It was full on flack and her face drop issues like. And we couldn't not laugh because it how funny the reaction. Yeah. Reaction. We all were like how the hell is that possible human being with a ponytail can hit a ball that foreign how how did that golf ball? Stay in one piece. Right because it was a Volvo. Yeah. And it was fifty degrees in blow in twenty into us. And he still has it was crazy. So a topic. We want to get into on on today's mad into Canada for we get to our guest is the controversy that that came up over the weekend with Matt Kuchar at the report that came in and report that came out Tom Gillis came out and had this story on social media that would Matt Kuchar won the event in Mexico. Hey, look gin and tonic aren't supposed to flower sangria, the drink of the islands wherever it originated from a you've been called fruity. So. Ginny tonic. Better Marcus Allen was calling me day. We don't say that. But yeah, we can't I know the Disney run podcast. And that's the other thing this four seasons resort is on Disney properties on Disney property, but there how about that house. That was so other things from that balcony for everybody. So this balcony it's kinda like a three quarter wrap around and you can see all of the resort. You can see the resort has like a lazy river, this is how cooled is places. So if you stay here, and this is one of the things I never took advantage of what I'm going to from now on when you stay here. You can use the spa, and yes like you don't have to get a massage to be able to go in the sauna and all that stuff. But that was my running joke that even you could come out of this place looking good. Maybe maybe it's going to take a long long time. It'd be a lot of work. It'd be a lot of work. But whatever it's you know, it's fine. Yeah. It's. Look it. We we were being treated like we were people, and we shouldn't have been I know. And that's. Did it was great. We had they staked. We look it was it was a it was a fun night to kind of kick off matting the caddy on a road again. And so our thanks to Alan and his crew at the four seasons post the picture of the food and whatnot, Mattie and caddy both Instagram and Twitter. We've got to come back in. We will come back. You were sitting on the driving range, and we're right in front of our friends at tailor-made. They're doing the club fitting for m five m six at appears. What's funny is that the for the pro-am today? You've definitely got the ams out here on the driving range, and they're they're getting fit for custom this. Here's the thing about this event, though, these ams a lot of them are celebrities and former athletes in other sports. So there is a lot of power on telling you some of the things that I saw on the driving range yesterday should not be done by an amateur who can play golf that doesn't get paid to play golf or it's not what you would teach a lot of times. You would teach normal amateur. Who was not a former pro athlete stop swinging angry. And look these guys. These are pro athletes are used to hand eye coordination. But I'm gonna stop. I'm gonna talk quiet here for a second because it's clear the guys getting fitted for their new drivers here aren't former athletes these appear to be executives of some sort company. Would you agree? Here's here's why feel bad. Look, I would do the same thing. But these guys show up to the first ones here at least for this this round of club that help because there's a lot of people here to see the swing, and but they're they're in front of.

The diamond resorts tournament of champions, the trank kilo golf club four seasons. Let's let's start there. Because there's there's a ton to get to just from our last twenty four hours in town. A first off the fine folks the four seasons, we're we're not they're not paying us. No, there's no relationship other than not even staying there. No and Alan and his group yesterday. They just wanted to show us around the property that's called hospitality, just straight. Good old. You can call it southern hospitality. If you want to. Yeah. Here's the deal. They gave us a view of the property of that hotel and everything around it. That was stupid. I mean, it was ridiculous. We they he took us in a suite that cost thirty five thousand dollars a night. It's above. So there's the presidential suite part. And then there's this which actually you can at top end nine bedrooms. It's got a balcony that you can see almost all the Florida. But the best part about that is not just the sunsets. Which are it was. That's when we got. Of course, got the see it was right at sunset, which is we're so spoiled, but you get to see all of the Disney parks fireworks fireworks from every all the parks all of it. It's creamy for thirty five thousand dollars a night. I better be able to see something and he was so slick too. He wouldn't give us any. I went in. I went full reporter sixty minute. Yeah. Who stayed here person been in this industry that they can't do it four seasons policy? Can't tell you the only thing that he would give us that we found interesting that was that a Powerball winner lotteries. Yeah. Yeah. Stayed there. And that was it that a lottery winner stay there. Air for what what do you say four or five days? Yeah. It was like four nights that he stayed there. And and had the all nine bedrooms and everything had a whole crew down. "The up and down the line up you know there really really good now the one area their vulnerable with their starting that they look a obviously as doubt you don't both starting staff full credit but you know what you do have a jon lester go down and i jake period of time ap fleet get hurt well maybe they can get into some traveled a thank you look back at that are through you know they can just out who are people night in and night out so fifteen to me is going to be a contender for the next decade i think we could hear of coach dynasty tight level and quite how the league you know be gonna kind of organization the kind of team commensurate with what we saw with the joe torre yankees i mean it's it's kind how it i know it's the cubs in many but he's been around for a long time that feels we're to hear answers like that about the cubs we given the market that there and the following that they have the ballpark there in everything else that's kind how it should be seth i'm curious another team in me in the en el central the st louis cardinals what you think of major league baseball's punishment against the cardinals for the packing against the houston astros yeah i think you got to come down hard on that stuff so certainly i thought even though it was obviously room guy i thought it was appropriate i think you need to turn mathis every organization that easy you need to have control and you need to watch over your employees and i don't think anything like that can be tolerated because it really goes to distract the integrity to get that's the bottom line the it's a really nice sports are really baby large part on the honor system i mean there are locked in my ways to quote unquote she but found anybody who we've gone era of shooting certainly but you know i think that major league baseball was appropriate i think it's an extremely violation earlier in the game and you know i'm one.
