"I mean, there always has to be, look, we all love a sports argument, right? A debate. And those have been around since the beginning of sports. And I'm not saying that they have it. But my problem now is there's so much animosity that vented towards baseball toward sports owners, agents, and players that a lot of the fun has come out of it. And that's why it's important and I think we recognize a guy like John Lester when he retires after 16 years. Yeah. And again, in 5 years, hopefully we get a chance to kind of bring him back up and do it all again when he's eligible for the Hall of Fame. Well, Alex, we got to get out of here and I got to wrap up this podcast. Thanks for joining me on it. Got anything you want to push? By the way? Just full coverage. We got the Patriots in the playoffs, two Caracas back to south, it should sell the deadline and we'll talk more about Ortiz candidacy, 98, 5 sports sub dot com. Well done, Alex, I'm very proud of you. We all taught you well, you know? And by the way, keep Evan Lazar in line, would you? Oh, I will. You know I am. By the way, when I text you, Bengal texts from the playoffs, will you please respond right away? I will try. I will. See, prime is, 'cause it's during after this, you know, once a patriots get eliminated definitely. If it's in the middle of a patriots game, I don't know what's going on, but are you going to buffalo, by the way? I am not. I will actually be on with Ted Johnson Sunday warning on the sports of from 8 to ten after the game. So there you go. Stick it sticking around to excuse me, sticking around to jump on air, so. All right, 8 to ten on Sunday morning with Ted Johnson, the former Super Bowl winning patriots linebacker. That will be much less than win or lose in Buffalo on Saturday night. I want to thank everybody for downloading today's podcast. Thank our terrific guests,.

"He's stirred up the pot a little bit when it came out on Tuesday that he didn't vote for one David Ortiz. He didn't vote for anybody for the Hall of Fame except Jeff Kent. And if you're telling me that Jeff Kent belongs in the baseball Hall of Fame over David Ortiz, given how much uncertainty there was regarding steroids and help me out here. Performance and hand PEDs. How much uncertainty there was over PEDs and the testing and that's what a lot of writers like myself feel about baseball in this era. There's so much unknown. Yes, a couple of tests come back positive and the rules were set. And that's why you have to come down hard as Chad Jennings said on my Red Sox meet podcast last week. He said, that's why he comes down hard on Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez because they broke the rules after the rules were definitively set in place. But in the early 2000s late 1990s, there was so much of a gray area that Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, Roger Clemens, even, you know, Jeff Kent's name has never been mentioned with it, but his numbers took a major spike up at that point. You know, all of these great names thrown into the pot with the PED big question mark hanging over baseball. You know, you can say if you want that practically everybody was doing it, which I don't think that's fair because I think there were still a lot of players who went to the weight room, they did what they could to strengthen their body, but they weren't going to take any of the stuff, not because they didn't want to break the rules or bend the rules, but because they were concerned about what it would do to their body long-term. Long story short, I'm rambling here. I think it's ridiculous that Dan shaughnessy would not vote for David Ortiz, but would put Jeff Kent in the Hall of Fame. What is the deal with Jeff Kent? Why Jeff Kent? Well, let me bring up the numbers. I don't remember a ton of Jeff Kent's career. I can't remember him at the end..

"Back with Alex barth of 98 5, the sports hub. Can I give you one more stat on John Lester? Yeah, please do. Okay, so when the Red Sox traded Jon Lester in the 2014 season, right, they go out. They signed David price the next year and that was kind of seen as the tradeoff. If you look at the numbers for David price and John Lester between 2015 and 2019, when price was in Boston, they're nearly identical. Lester has the edge in some categories price as the edge of a categories. I think that says a lot because price was hailed as this monumental signing. Obviously, it didn't turn out great, but you hailed as this monumental signing, right? And the guy he replaced the guy they didn't want to pay basically did the same thing. And they could have had them for a significantly less. So that's kind of you, I'm glad you did this, Alex. Thank you. You saved my bacon here. You can't tell the John Lester story without explaining what happened in 2014. And what happened preceding that and how the Red Sox let them get away to recap everybody, I think Red Sox fans know that the Red Sox had a chance to sign him at a much lower value and Red Sox ownership decided to take a pass. They thought that John Lester was asking too much, they lowballed him. And that is the reason why John Lester in the end decided not to sign with the Red Sox and the Red Sox. Waited too long and then they had to decide as we mentioned in 2014 to trade him to the Oakland a's and you know Alex, what were your memories of that? That whole thing. I was crushed. Like I said, lesser is one of my favorite players at the time. And. I knew I knew the whole thing sports as a business and these guys are hired guns and all that. Like, I was holding. I was in college at that.

"Anyway, I went with my mom took me and my brother and my mom's a cancer survivor and she knew John Lester, she was well aware of Jon Lester's story. We were all well aware of John Lester's story. You know, we were big fans of his, for that reason Andy was a good player. We used to donate $31 to the Jimmy fund every year because that was his number. So to see his no hitter with my mom, that was just a really cool moment. So, you know, from then on, Jon Lester's always been one of my favorite athletes because just what he embodied. He went about it the right way all of that. So a hell of a career. And again, it's a shame he didn't get to spend more of it in Boston. Indeed. And yes, that no hitter that happened did happen back in 2000 and 8 against the Kansas City Royals, really was in a remarkable achievement. And really, that's when the tracks what would have happened, what would have happened if 14 year old me ran up to you coming out of the press box and said, I'm going to work with you one day. What has said, get the F out of the way, kid. I'm going to make you part of the Fenway concrete if you don't get out of my way. And I'm sure I unfortunately said that to some poor kid. But on May 19th, 2008 Lester through a no hitter in a 7 zero win against the Kansas City Royals. In that game, Lester through a 130 pictures allowing only two walks striking out 9 batters actually was charged with a throwing error on a pick off attempt in the second inning. It was the first no hitter thrown by a Red Sox lefty. Do you know since when? You probably don't know this. But I'm going to ask it anyway. Is it since cyan? No. 1956, Mel Parnell. It was the first Red Sox left handed picture since Mel Parnell in 56 to throw a no hitter. It was I was there. It was a remarkable achievement given what John Lester has been through and had been through up until that very young part of a portion of his career. And he picked 16 years in the major leagues. And that in his third season was his only no hitter. And certainly a remarkable run of success from 2007 through 2011. He kind of fell off the cliff a little bit in 2012, but in 2000 and 9 he picked 6 and a third perfect inning striking out ten batters and 61 pitches through 6 innings and that was against the Texas Rangers who at the time in that season were leading the American League west. But you know when I when we talk about a guy like John Lester, obviously everybody understands what he went through early in his career overcoming cancer. And to me, that's a remarkable achievement in and of itself. But after 16 seasons, I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame. I think he's going to get there. And I think he's going to get there for that intangible that if you talk to any John Lester teammate of his over the years with the Red Sox, the cubs and the Cardinals, he was a very incredibly fierce competitor, Alex. Yeah, again, he was, I think, the thing about Lester's and I kind of said.

"Covering all things Boston sports. He's a great follow on Twitter. One of the things I love about Alex barth is you can really kill him for his passion. And his sometimes absurd hyperbolic takes on Twitter. But that is Alex barth. You should be following him at real Alex barth. He does a great job covering the Patriots, but he also does a great job of stand on top of other things, Boston sports, and that's what brings us to the Red Sox. Two big storylines we're going to get to in this Red Sox beat podcast. First of all, on Tuesday, a Red Sox legend retires from Major League Baseball and I don't think that's hyperbole. One of my very favorite words, John Lester, retiring from Major League Baseball after a terrific career, one with the, that's obviously started with the Red Sox. I think he's a Hall of Famer. Alex is based on his Red Sox career alone, but then he goes to Chicago with the cubs, starts game 7 there, wins the World Series with the cubs, of course, the cubs snap that incredibly long drought World Series drought dating back to 1908. And they broke that in 2016 in Cleveland a 108 year drought. And any finish up this past season with the Saint Louis Cardinals, he was part of that historic 17 game winning streak that got St. Louis into the wild card and got them into the postseason. So John Lester goes out of winter, your thoughts, Alex on John Lester's career. Yeah, well it's a damn shame I didn't get to spend more of it in Boston. I'll tell you that first and foremost. Everything you kind of want, you know, he wasn't the flashy ace. He wasn't Kershaw, got like that for a lander, but you felt good when he was on the mound. He was just a, I think, consistency is something we undervalue as sports fans and sports evaluators like maybe a guy's peak is so high, but you know how reliable are they John Lester? You pretty much knew what you were getting every time he took them out and he'd go out there and get on the mound. He started over 30 games. I believe every season of his career until this most recent one or for the most of his career, the early seasons, obviously interrupted, but to overcome cancer and then be that reliable physically. I think is really a testament to what he did. And I mean, a lot of people talk about Lester in the World Series and all that. I was actually at John Lester's no hitter. And it was a very cool moment for me as was I, I was in the press box covering it. Yes. So I was 2010, so I would have been like 16 years earlier than that. Let's go back. I think it was 2000 and 7. I believe it was 2007 against Baltimore. So I would have been 13. My Kansas City. Now I gotta look this up. Go ahead and continue. No, I think it was one of those buckles, one of those is Lester, Kansas. Anyway, Kansas City, I believe, is Lester. But I'm looking it up. Go ahead. Okay..

I got Andrew Luck coming over retirement going to the Patriots. And then I want to tell you I grew up watching Coast Guard Academy football playing Merrimack outta Maine. And that was the biggest game of my life. It wasn't Columbus was in Albert, but I didn't care. It was the biggest game. Saturday, and I think college was lost coat lost like touch on that, right, like everyone's with the dollars, but not every town is Tuscaloosa. I grew up in Groton, Connecticut, and it was Didn't care about Tuscaloosa because Groton, Connecticut on Saturday when I wouldn't marry Matt came was the biggest deal of my day when I was 10 years old. I'm glad to hear that. But how are you indicting college football for that? They wants the way Is that game still being played? Are you being denied the right to go to it? I'm not sure I follow Why you've got it is No, I take issue with not that it's not. It's not that it's not a game, but it's that the importance or the beauty of the game is eliminated. Right like like the contracts go to the top five. We all know the money follows the big leaders. But the war bash Mount Union game is awesome for what it is The Merrimack, the Merrimack Coast Guard Academy. Is an awesome, right. But what the war back amount Union game, which is what, like the Division three championship Every year. Those teams always seemed to be there. Right there. Top Division three, uh, that's probably aired on one of the ESPN channels, right? Then you get to the championship game. They're gonna air it somewhere. Somebody's gonna happen. TBS gonna have it or Fox is gonna have somebody's gonna happen. I'm one of their sports networks. So you're gonna have a chance to watch it if you want, And I guarantee you that it does. One quarter of the ratings that a regular season SEC game does on CBS. So that's what college football plays, too. Then they'll they'll give you a taste of everything, but the fans across the country is going to dictate what's going to get the most attention. Yeah, but here's the thing. Here's the thing. All the money goes to the recruiting the stars. The dollar points the commitment day all of that spread that out. Gives gives him love to the kids from you know, from Secaucus, New Jersey That's going to Merrimack. You know, give God loved of that. Don't put all the money to the Clemson in the Ohio State. Lend them money out for the fun. We all world, you know, we're all right. I mean, I appreciate the call. Thank you very much. I understand your passion for the little guy and I smile when I hear you say it. But you're taking it too far in your unrealistic Money goes to money like I s so funny that you said that right after I explained to you the way the business of college football works. The Division three championship will be aired on some national network beat ESPN. Uh, can you or ESPN two or three or four or five or six, or Fox and CBS Whether it's gonna be aired. You're gonna get a chance to see that you're dying to see that game. You're big Division Three football fields. That's one of your alma mater. You're gonna be able to watch that game. But it's gonna be you and the other people who've graduated from school over the last 10 years. And not a whole hell of other people, and they're not going to put it up on the pan. Dual sports book betting app. You're not gonna be able to bet that game. Oh, but you can bet Clemson against Miami. Even bet any SEC Big 10 Big 12 called football game You want And when they put them on ESPN quack, CBS, they're going to join numbers. They're going to get people to watch. You're not going to get so many people watch the Division three championship game. That's why They're not going to get his bigger check written by the sports network. It's carrying it because it's not going to go on our viewers to merit getting that check. So you want the SEC toe fund all the smaller schools across the country because they are the highest profile conference in college football. Get the biggest check toe let the networks air their games. What's kind of not their job. I think it's enough to DSCC schools. The college football. Major mass of money generating schools can put money toward the other sports in their university. They do share But they share amongst themselves at that college they should need to have to share with college is 1000 miles away, playing at a lesser level. That's not their job. Rick from Iowa is up on CBS Sports radio already Already. How are you? I'm good. How you doing? Good. What's on your mind? Johnny Mac. I love you, man. Thank you. But the whole the whole the whole national anthem thing. You know, I grew up here in Iowa. Very patriotic very down to earth. I played baseball all throughout high school. Little bit in college, you know, stand up for the national anthem Got me jacked up. I've been to Green Bay I've been to South Band watched Notre Dame Packers, which I hate. But anyway, that's another story. When you're sitting there as a fan and 60,000 people are standing up for the national anthem. It just it gets the crowd energized. They do the flyovers. Get the players. They they're multi millionaires, billionaires. Whatever. They want to kneel. It pisses me off. You know what The NFL created this monster. Back in the eighties. They want to broadcast the national anthem. Try to get people to sign up for The armed forces, the army, the Navy, the Air Force Marines, Whatever. That's great. But you know what? It's all about Patriotism. We live in the fricking country of America. The land of the free the home of the brave If you're not gonna stand for the flag, and I tell you what, as as a guy I sat there and listened to it. Listen to the national anthem standing. Point. Defending my freedom defending my honor defending my team. If You know when common Captain Nick, I'm not? No, I'm before you feel pretty strongly about this. I'm feeling the emotion to the phone and good for you. So I will reiterate the question. I asked at the top, which you haven't gotten around answering yet. Should they do away with the national anthem? It sporting events. If it is going to have reactions, like the one you're having if someone doesn't handle themselves, position themselves the way that you want. Then it becomes an issue And you want to have your to say if you wanna be able calm on the carpet for it. Okay, fine. This is Mark Cuban, right? Should they do away with the anthem? Because it has become too politicized. Maybe another professions you know, America's pastime is baseball. They've always played the national anthem at baseball. Well, we've always played the national anthem on every National Football League..
Ian Happ on Jon Lester’s Impact: 'He Changed This Organization'
"John lester he leaves a legacy here. We all know that we all know what an incredible human being is. But for you personally. What did john mean to you. I know you guys were really really close. What he teach you. What kind of life lessons and baseball lessons did he give to. So that you could have your own your own path and your own career. John john taught me how to be a pro. You know from from that first year in two thousand seventeen It really took me under his wing And and just taught me all the little things that go into preparing He was the most prepared player. Most prepared pitcher. I've ever seen The way that he went about his bullpens the way he went about his day before. Prep i think he taught a lot of of guys that he played with how to do that. and it was just so amazing to watch him compete. He was one of the guys that You'd run through a wall for every day Being behind them and it was such a privilege to get to the play with him for a few years and to get to experience that for me. He's a no doubt hall of famer if he changed his organization And i can't say enough good things about what he's done for me personally As a baseball player and just as a person

"Hood Boom right there, right there. All information that you need is right there. There you go, 3123323776. Let's go to Patrick and Saint Charles. Hey, Patrick. What's up, sparkles? What's going on, guys. Good morning. How are you? Good path. Thank you. Calling. I got two questions for you. I mean, diehard Jon Lester fan. I'm a Red Sox fan. I idolized him. I've met him. Awesome guy. In your opinion, question. Number one is Jon Lester, a Hall of Famer. Uh, it's gonna be very, very close. He gets a 200 wins for a lot of people. That is. Ah, huge Benchmark. If you go back through, there's a few analysts that have made the case that he already is a Hall of Famer. It'll be close well in the modern time, Patrick today 200 is the benchmark because we have to lower our expectations. We will not see another 300. Game winner in our lifetime. This is why you get the Lester's in the mark Burley's and names like that that are possible Hall of Fame candidates because we're just not going to get Quality starts that you know the 275 300 game winner anymore. Correct, So it's a possibility. You never know. Okay if he is elected into the baseball Hall of Fame, what had William where? Boston Red Sox 100%. Why Why not? He want to world Syriza's there. Why would he wear Cubs hat? From my understanding as a Boston Red Sox fan. Jon Lester never got a true good pie in Boston, and that's still a sour taste in his mouth. It's not his choice. Baseball, So I completely understand. I'll set up in Listen after this, but I'm just saying What? I don't think you were about to read back. I don't know if you Specifically pick a team. In my opinion. Yeah, well as again we put you the phone calls is baseball's called Corrector. Wade Boggs wouldn't as a ray. That was the end of that year straight Wade Boggs and a raise, You know Andre Dawson as an expo. No. But Gostin. Well, that worked. But Dawson, it wasn't his choice. We wanted to go in as a cub, and they wouldn't let him because it because Wade Boggs ruined it for everybody right? Because he took the bonus from the res part of his contract when they signed him was Hey. We're going to send you this big money deal. We just want you to go in the Hall of Famer as a raise. Supposed to read sex. Jon Lester pitched nine years for the Red Sox. 110 wins six years for the Cubs. 77 wins. I think the Hall of Fame if he made it with a big if, if he made it, he would probably go in as a Red Sox. Yeah, I agree. Yeah, and what I think of Well, when I think of Dawson, I think I'm as an expo. Was when he was first. He's in that great outfield with Tim Raines, Warren Cromartie and Alice Family and Alice Valentine. Hell's own time. So that's That's what I think of first all black outfield in the late seventies early eighties with the Expos like It was groundbreaking in that market as groundbreaking, so that's sure he should be an expo. As you mentioned, I agree with you that more than likely the two championships Red Sox. Yeah, I think he goes into the Red Sox. Yeah, I think it's 100%. He goes into the Red Sox and I could tell you he's He loved his time in Chicago. He wanted to be here, he said. I'll make any contract deferment deferral, whatever you want. Let's make it work. And they had indicated him yet that this is easy. We'll get this shortcut. Done, right. Red Sox or not. Can't make it over. Oh, wait. The Nationals made an offer. I call him up because if someone asked at the press conference, did the Cubs make an offer? He can't say no. Way too late in the process. It was over. All right back to the phone off ago. Let's go to, uh, Jackson out on the tri state. Hey, Jackson. Hey, guys, What's up, buddy? Hey, Jackson, not a have to agree with Danny here. And I love Jon. Laughter and everything like that. But What Jesse said earlier is this is gonna be a huge rebuilt. We can't even get rid of Kris Bryant. And it seems like they want to just get rid of everybody. And you can't rip it down to the studs. Even in this year like you want to So as much as I love Jon Lester, you've got to stop thinking about it, you know emotionally and think about it as a business. Has nothing do with emotion. You asked him to build your culture. You need to continue said culture. He has told you I want to be here and nowhere else. Make it work. You want to defer some of the money I don't care, and they've indicated to him. No question. We want you to be here. They didn't come to him in October and go ahead and it's the tear down. Do you need to go look somewhere else? He reached out and called the owner by himself, not his agent him twice. And was told Talk to jet. I empowered him. It's all his call. No offer. No offer. No offer. Noah. Whoa. You got an offer way Gotta we gotta react. Make an offer made an offer. Yeah. Jackson from us really handle Jackson. From my standpoint, Jax. I just think that it's a good trade ship. If you do sign him for that deal. Ah, sweetheart, Deal our hometown discount pretty much right for Jon Lester. Then if you want to trade him by the deadline you can because someone will say okay, I can't give you my age, but I give you my high B level prospect. And I don't think they would have done that. Anyway. He would have just retired as a cop. It would have been a swan song. It would have been cool and you would have had this amazing influence on your young pitchers. John, can I increase your chances of winning a championship? We're not what you wanna hear. John because they know I think he would.

Then you you think the worst like what happened there, right. Right. So that's It scared me. I'll be honest. I appreciate it. You know, I felt like Ebeneezer Scrooge for a minute where I got to see the ghost of Christmas future Like so I was dead and you guys were all remember me And I appreciate I thought cat maybe would have been a little bit more choked up. Like I expected tears from cap. No shot. He's good with those. I thought, maybe you know, honey, I felt nice. Nice eulogy. Yeah, it was written is right here. Written ready to go. I didn't know what to expect. So you always gotta be ready, right? Got to be ready. And so you weren't here for the meeting? The meeting was capped talking about cap. Of course, Danny. He's not here. People is Jon Lester. They shot I'm gonna drill in the day I was working. I'm speaking. Jon Lester. I'm driving. I'm driving in and I hear you guys talking about Jon Lester. You're making it personal. And I didn't understand why this is like the Cubs treating Jon Lester Crappy. I want to talk to you about that. They absolutely did. They're broke. They just can't afford him. It's not personal. They're broke. They made an offer as soon as he got another offer after telling him when he reached out to the owner. Yeah, we can't make any officer. Maybe they didn't have the money at the time when the nationals made the offer, And then the money came. It was called Cover your ass. So if anyone says today that comes making offer Yeah, after I already got the offer when he called them and said What do you want to pay me? Three million. Let's just get a deal done. I don't want to go anywhere else. They had a food bar that they had to try to look for the money. Was it in sometimes secret Treasure chest wasn't in the bags of Crown Royal It is the empty benches found some million forum. If feels here, Lester's a couple least for one more year. So Jon Lester and Kyle Schwarber on the Washington Nationals now, Dave? Yeah, they just want to go to the inauguration. So is that it Now they're they're good for them. Was there really any chance that Lester was going to re sign again with the Cubs? I mean, I think there was a chance, but it sounds like the Nationals. Made him a better offer. And that's presumably white took it. I mean, I don't think there was ever any guarantee that they were going to get something done with him here, and he goes to a team in Washington, where he joins a rather formidable Rotation with the Shires, ER and Strasbourg and Corbin and Yeah, they got Schwarber out there and who's got a better starting rotation. Now the nationals of the White Sox. Why that That'll be good question. That could very well be a match up. I don't know if Washington is going to get back to the world serious they wanted a couple of years ago, but they had a bad year this year, but Yeah, that's that's that would be a pretty good match up to say the least. No, no news from from my cubs. Nothing happening. No, no move. Nothing. Nothing Earth shattering that I've heard up. And he shared an update yesterday he tweeted out some information indicating that 3466 beers had been put on his tab. Totalling $25,637.90, including a gratuity. He said he had received a credit card fraud alert on Saturday. For all the charges, but pretty cool thing. Don't you think I'm looking at the tweet from Lester? Nice work, Chicago. And The list. The number of Miller Lites mentions his fraud alert and And the total number of beers on his tab. And then he said yesterday, let's finish strong today and mask up. Damn it. You gotta love Jon Lester, and by the way, he tipped more than 20%. No. Yeah, well, you know what? Hey, he can afford it right? But still, but he still doesn't have to. That's right. And he didn't have to do what he did for Chicago fans. Thank you, Jon Lester. Stand by on you and Page six people are talking about the bearers lost in overtime against the Saints and Soldier field yesterday. At least it wasn't a tie at you know, I was thinking last night. If this ends in a tie, I'm going to feel like I just wasted my whole Sunday. I know. I know what I would have been better than the Bear's losing, technically speaking, but It didn't end the way any of us wanted to. And Dan Hampton will join us after the 7 A.m. news to talk more about that, But you know that way. What can you say? It's just the offenses still sputtering, isn't it? I mean, the defense there on the field a lot and I guess they they played OK, don't you think that's what the defense played well and look, they don't have a chance in that game. If the defence Rowe Kwan Smith had his best game is a bear. You know now that said, you still see so much inconsistency there offensively and that's the thing they have to get fixed. If they want to. Have the second half of the season anything close to what they had in the first half. And they're gonna have a tough game on Sunday at Tennessee. There already underdogs for that game, You know that's Ah, a noon game. Yeah, there is that. The thing about it, though, Bob is that they still have they have two games to go with Green Bay. Down the road here. They've got the Vikings and the Vikings one yesterday at Lambeau, but division games so They can still kind of get this thing straightened out. But they can't wait. You know, they've got to do it now. We should talk about more pleasant things like your Northwestern Wildcats. Yes, yes to Odo. How about that after coming from 17 down TTO win at Iowa on Saturday. Now they will come home and take on Nebraska and it's It's one of those years where you have per duo and Northwestern, both to a no. In the Big 10 West. And, of course, Wisconsin's one note. They didn't play this week. They're supposed to play Purdue on Saturday. We'll see if that game happens. 22 positive Koven 19 tests for the Badgers I I have a feeling That today. We're going to hear about more cases in the big 10. It just has to be. I mean, if you talk to anybody at college right now. It seems like everybody's got the virus. Some people do really well with it. Young people for the most part two, but still it's running rampant. Well, I know you. Ah, your daughter's works with the football team in Illinois. They got hit over the weekend. They lost their starting quarterback for 21 days as Wisconsin did last week and They had a bunch of cases. Bunch of guys who couldn't play because of contact tracing for their game against Purdue. And, yeah, I mean, it's you got to believe there's more common. Well, I would not. It's not just the big 10. I mean, you saw the The guy was likely likely the Heisman Trophy favourite. Now, depending he's going to miss this week's game again. Trevor Laurence quarterback for Clemson missed their game against Boston College. He's out again this week, so It's it's It's pretty much a national thing. The Pac 12 starts playing this week. The Mid American Conference starts playing this week. We'll see how those conferences fair. And I can't wait. Teo get Dan Hamptons review of the of the fight that happened on your fight, Really? Although certainly the roar punches thrown that you normally see in one of those didn't start when somebody liked it. The three Stooges move through the through the face. Well, that's what TV went back and showed that with with with Anthony Miller, I think it wass. With the player who ended up getting the was the CJ gardener Johnson, who got the the punch from from from the whims, but you know, it's just that he got to keep your composure in those situations as As tough to do is that maybe everything kind of went downhill Pretty quick and well read and next play fool's got picked off. So after he poked him like they put them in the eye, you know to start all that ruckus. Did he go after he did that? Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Yeah, That's.
Cubs Offense Struggles Downright Ugly, Lester Lacking Confidence
"You brought up Jon Lester and I thought the most interesting thing about this is Jon Lester is I can say Howard asked at this time of the morning. He's a guy that has been through 24 7. Yes, School is ah, Utah. I love talking to him in the clubhouse. And you know, conversation could go on for 10 minutes or 20 minutes or 30 minutes and you walk away thinking boy? That guy knows baseball. I just learned something right? And I was concerned when earlier in the week and after his last starter to heed voiced concerns about his confidence going forward. That's not Jon Lester. We know That's not him. Now He's 36. Obviously, you know, the end is nearing its always nearing for all of us. But as a baseball player, the end is nearing for him. This is his last year with the Cubs under contract. And he wants to perform the best He can, and he's not been happy with what's been going on. But I was watching the Marquis network on the post game last night, and they were breaking down how Lester attacked the Brewers yesterday with his cutter and four seamer. He got 16. Swings and misses 12 of the 16 rounds cutter in his four seamer yesterday, and he was able to do pitch well, do everything he could possibly do to get the Cubs to get a win last night. They just couldn't hit Brandon Woodruff earlier this year. They have better success against. I think he's pitched against only three times. So, but you got to get some hits, but I was happy to see Jon Lester. Now, if I'm Lester, I go in the locker room and listen. I busted my tail to try and keep us in games. Let's go. Let's pick it up. We've got 2.5 a little more than two weeks to go. Let's hold onto this first place position might might question the Cubs fans is 3123323776 people always talk about the window, The windows wide open all the windows closed. And this this feels like you got like a popsicle stick trying to hate hold the window up and that stick is bending right now because of your big guys Don't hit on field talked about it a couple days ago. Apparently, they didn't get the memo or they got it for a day. Right? For one inning. Anyone? Yeah, If you're big guys are going to hit. You can't win in baseball. Nowadays, it's just pitching is only going to get you so far. Even if you're pitching is doing well.

The last time the White Sox won this Siri's was back in 2014. The Cubs have won every Siri's or There have been ties. 2014 has been a lot of ties, or 60 two's A stab in my stead of the night is also 62. This comes from Jason Benetti and Elias Sports. The White Sox and Cubs are playing 620.620 baseball combined at a 62% average. They've never played against each other with a better combined winning percentage. So also is 62 about that. That's pretty good about that. It's a pretty good Ah, that's pretty good for the baseball show here in the first week, some good stats. I'm excited for the Cubs in the White Sox because this should be a good benchmark. Spot here in this season, because when we come back for our show on Tuesday night Monday, we will be carrying on NBA basketball here on ESPN 1000 Tuesday night, though we will discuss The halfway point in Major league baseball season. It's gotten here quick in the second half is upon us. So we'll go through our mid season awards on Tuesday night's show here on the baseball show. That's kind of the problem with us talking about slumps and guys playing well, not really a problem playing well, but it's like, Well, can they keep this up for a whole season? Dude, there's 30 games left in the playoffs, start believing the whole season. Is a month of baseball left and then the playoffs start and then and then That's it. Then you're done. It's crazy. But that's what it is. So people the guys there something come out need to come out of their slums. The guys they're hitting will need to continue their success. "When it comes to the rules of the game or what it's going to be easier or tougher on David Ross is yeah N. dot rice at all about any of his baseball thoughts like I'm not I think Jon Lester's it you know it obviously John's got his priorities in the right place for John loves wall and I think there are a lot of guys that love ball and want to get back to doing what they know you know what they not only to get compensated handsomely for doing but something it's in their blood at Johns also guided probably understands the clock is ticking for him right so he wants a bounce back year this year yeah to do this yeah it's all goals yes and I thought I thought it was interesting when he said that they put that those dates out there so sort of let the pictures now Hey you've got two months here so think of it is like you're almost in in January yeah you know and then you report in mid February you're like six weeks away middle of June from reporting and then you'll have three weeks of of spring training so get the arm in in the position that you normally what happened and I think I heard Clayton Kershaw the other day said that too that that he's basically taking it like this is January this month yeah and listen if things have to change I'm sure these guys understand they'll be flexible but you have to give them this type of planning in advance so that they can prepare themselves right all right so I two days final four topic we've had fun with this getting our favorite things yes a lot of people add cookie feedback that surprise me yeah wasn't prepared for that I thought it was great to like those great to have the cookie monster on raiding the rainy hurting someone asked for his somebody asked for his tweet today for that they missed it and they wanted to make sure on paper they had all four of his options where to get the best cookies Merck it only should support you after the show naked did you yeah a little sleep when I got back only rainy murk in though can have like a cookie happy hour and his number one cookie resides in Las Vegas yeah of all the things we do in Vegas he goes for the cookie yes literally that's not a that's not a figure of speech that psycho he's going for the cookie yes in the E. it's his favorite cookie in America all right so this is today the way we're turning this is these are our favorite all time sports teams but it can not be in your fandom so for instance I cannot list the bears the bulls the cobs or the Blackhawks or any team that like I'm a fan of the Paul you know they these have to be outside of the teams that we have routed for like locally okay so I just ask you this question because a doll and I had a little bit of an argument about this I asked them at one point could I use the eighty five bears is one of my teams because out wrote I cried I didn't know Jura pairs bearing now maybe this is you twenty twenty while you were on that team how could that be that's the whole point this is not an immediate dollar cannot pick Alabama I know it's not from there but he loves family like but I didn't grow up loving the eighty four info in fact I don't sleep in at the time that's like when you pick Soldier Field is one of your favorite stadium because you played there we yeah yeah nine I mean I'm alive do you do you want honesty or do you want what you want and you get a tattoo like cap I find that I get to pick the eighty five bears because I was only one I was I was one years old and wasn't actually rooting for the bears and the only one I didn't know any better so I could pick the five best you know we can't root I did our teams and we grew up enjoying from afar that's what I did when you became a parent does your mindset changed I I'm not on my list you know what I quote you was like a father figure to me you pulling the pain was the greatest ever but we know you played for the bears anyway with me if I'm okay that I'm screaming you played with half of all I work with **** the last piece follow the rules I am on there yes I'm on the air I work with axes the new while it's liberating I do you want me to go first then you could do with rain storm more of your stuff out I have my teens okay good take I'm just telling you I was going to put them on my on the outside looking in less than a dollar gave me the same speech you choose yeah I'm with a dial on the dating is stupid number four for me is in nineteen eighty nine San Francisco forty Niners they were fourteen into that your don't you remember they beat the Broncos just murdered them in the post in the Super Bowl Joe Montana five touchdown passes in that game Jerry rice with three touchdown catches that was Jerry rice that was John Taylor that was Roger Craig that was all of the some of the best players of all time so that was my favorite football team that was enough for me because I always rooted against them because they stood in the bears way in the late eighties a few times you ready second course light already first course like this well that's a first brought to you by course lights your wife in the background so are you number three she's asking me if any dogs going to the patriots no I don't think so I don't I'm on the air okay the main number three for me this may surprise you maybe not the nineteen eighty three Philadelphia seventy Sixers Juno was on that team yes I do give me this I will go Dr J. yes I will go Maurice cheeks yes Sir I will go Moses Malone yes Sir I will choose a lobby Jones yes Sir injured Tony yes Earl Cureton yes well I'm just telling these later it because this is on my list to waddle so that is why Philadelphia seventy Sixers the way the way I turned it was different but that's it's cool keep going that that was my number three to number two the hickory Huskers from the movie Hoosiers okay but weren't they based on a true team and they'll be released on the nineteen fifty four championship team but this was like in the movie I think it was the fifty one championship but it was based on a fifty nine of the nineteen fifty four state championship team and number one for me is in nineteen eighty men's Olympic hockey see I I don't know that kinda you're you're aware of those accounts that are not a fan base we repaired Verica no that's what I did because I normally would put them on my list and I did not because of that then the better for what were you gonna root for that year Russia possibly so we wouldn't have won as reasons about I don't know yeah maybe Canada oh Canada now you got to find a new number one you got to find a new number one I'm defending you wanted this is the the United States we said stuff that you didn't root for because they're your team we refer mereka Audi eighty three for Philadelphia seventy Sixers were my team as well from my country not your kind of rooted for the seventy Sixers in eighty three all right that number four for me is the seventy Steelers the first bat I ever made I believe was for the nineteen seventy nine season with mark Pablo we bet five dollars he took the cowboys I had the Steelers that team was awesome they were hundreds you are gambling at ten I think it was eight or nine thank you there was a first but we bet with a five dollar bill with a big money back I don't know five Bucks you start with me if I would have lost but I won in the Steelers were I mean the Steelers were cool right the I mean the the the steel curtain and everything number three is the nineteen eighty seven Minnesota Twins the Homer hanky Minnesota Twins number one they beat my hated St Louis cardinals in that series it will take her baby son aims hi her back right Dan Gladden right leadoff hitter Kirby Puckett right Blyleven eleven appall modernity I don't think Molly would know he was not he was not afraid my leader twins team Frank viola Frey Frank was making sweet music for that team ready after he was okay that team I think he was there closer to the big black beard Gary guy yet he was on that team yes love that don bailer was on that team yes there were big team in RBI baseball yeah they were fun and it was a cool crowd number two I just went with the doctor J. seventy Sixers I mean they were super cool everything Dr J. in that year they broke through and number one it was it was I hated the Celtics does Showtime Lakers when I was growing up I used to watch CBS and watch the Lakers against the Celtics and root them on their way they would run and gun and say one day will the bulls ever be this good the magic Johnson's Showtime Lakers were so damn good and so damn fine I was team records over the Celtics every day though I always used to try to shoot the ball like Jamal Wilkes yes from up over his head yeah that jumper I I hear you I feel you I got I got nervous there for a second because I thought you're gonna take one of mine so he bites I will start with the west Canaan coyotes of varsity blues the greatest football movie ever made of course I will tweeter John mocks Billy Bob wins the game come on how could you not how could you not love that team they pull down all you know you said well I haven't seen it yet you just ruined it come out of Dallas seriously you know they win the game plus the best bars the whip cream on and number number three for me is obviously this is the one I was worried about when when so he said the Lakers the Kobe Shaq Lakers those Lakers of all one oh two oh three those were I love Kobe Bryant so watching those the bulls are crap so watching those Lakers then were it was great I love those teams number three number two is the sandlot team and you're like oh that's not a team that had played a game yeah they did they beat a bunch of Pepperidge farm eating crumpets as baseball players that's what they did they came back to beat that team of rich kids here and the sandlot he was awesome ham Porter playing catcher talk about how important I know we did is that your girlfriend out there naked I think I can get her number that's a great team and number one for me I've never rooted for a team harder than I rooted for the six oh seven Florida Gators that gave me the two months worth of rent when I won the bracket here at ESPN taking money out of Tom models pocket unbeknownst to him because he didn't when he came in second place so I think he's still got it well yeah because I want you came inside if they were if the if the Florida lost you would have won and I would come in while we both cash a check yeah I think we want you want a little bit but I wanted for a hit for for an intern back then I won or no for just starting out I went to months rent it was awesome and I love I've never cheered harder for it to you content game than any other team member Anna Meller what about your favorite you chance for me how about when I was nine years old the nineteen ninety run and shoot Houston Oilers how fun where they with Warren moon at the helm give yourself the.

"And it's always great to talk to Jon Lester he started everything when he signed with the cubs back in twenty fifteen he led them to a World Series in twenty sixteen and he joins us right now on the corona hot line John always great to talk to you so this spring training get older is it still as good as it's ever been and I love spring training it it's a good time of the year you know you are last year we had a a longer all season so you know to get back out here get some warm weather and get around the guys is always fun you know I think when you look the more more you do you know you got to figure out what works and what doesn't work out routine but yeah man it's good it's good to be back it's good to be around the guys you know a lot of energy a lot of focus to camp right now and if you guys are excited to go John how is camp different with with David Rawson charge versus what you experience the last several years with Joe all well I mean I think that's the kind of comparing apples and oranges you know I and I think they both have their unique ways of going about business and and I I I love the way Joe did thing with doing it when he was here it was it was always a pleasure to have camp with him in the season and all that you know I think Rossi just being new to everything I think is you know he's gonna be more energetic you're going to be kind of more in your face or something but the way can't going right now is great and the guys are excited guys are focused on on the stuff I need to get done yeah I mean I don't think you could really compare ministers to different styles that that kind of go about things in different ways and and both very positive way Jon Lester joining us it's waddling selfie on ESPN one thousand more to that I mean have you noticed the difference between David Ross the player in the guy who came over with you when you played with in Boston verses David Ross the manager is the the same guy I think guys different title I think that's what's been fun to see us so far eight specs the same thing that he expected out of me when we pay when we played together five days so you know the accountability the the effort of preparation the focus the attention to detail and I was stuff that he always prided himself on and he he made sure that I was locked into those as well on the on the day that that are occurring over to him being in kind of the same guys as far as on the field with us right now one thing I've been surprised with this is you know he hasn't changed because he has a new title and I think that that's hard for anybody you know when you read you get promotions are you move up in and to not feel like you have to change that the stuff that he has done to this point in his life and and then in this career is going to work and just a different title he still buses shops or can you not do that now because your manager and not just to capture no you know you can I mean he's he's still I think that's what's gonna make everything you need you know I think he on the line when you're here you know he acted use your boss and and you're you're respectful that it you know all that but when it comes down to also you know you still bodies and you still have to keep everybody accountable you know a lot of that that goes for the players to the manager to the other coaches so that we give our time job with the same guy you know I think when when the lights turn on we get going to you know things are gonna change a little bit but I think it's all gonna be for the good water when I we're debating this yesterday in the wake of a lot of comparisons because a geo and now because the David Ross you played for at least a handful of managers like how much of a difference does a manager make at the end of the day whether the club was good or not arm I think a lot I mean I think you know the managers the team is the extension of the manager you know and I I I've been fortunate enough to play for a lot of good ones and and so is it so drop the and I think he's using those experiences are from guys like Terry Francona from guys like John feral you know guys like Joe obviously the most recent one to kind of you know kind of figure out his way I think the biggest thing is is you you you you are in that respect for your players in the and all those guys have Joe definitely did that in you know obviously the Rossi doing that as well so yeah I mean we're just an extension of him going out there playing and and hopefully we do that well for Mister John hobby talked about preparation I know the front office is talked about accountability the last year or so but from the veterans perspective why did you guys get to where you needed to be and wanted to be last year I mean if we do that we would have moved on further you know baseball the funny sport and that's why we play a hundred sixty to a woman you know I've been a part of you know close to a hundred loss teams I've been part of teams that have you know one hundred plus games that have been party instead of like the playoffs by one game and you know I've been a part of a lot of things and I think if you knew what made each team specials for the ones that go on and and actually went that you'd be able to duplicate that every year or replicate that every year and it's just hard man you got a battle injuries you got guys that that try to fight through think they can't then you have a little bit of a lark you got to have everybody going you know like I said if if if it was one thing that you put your finger on it we were expected move on and and be better and and sometimes you just can't fix those areas and and unfortunately we weren't able to and and you know we as a result we had a longer offseason personally John how do you feel about your two thousand and nineteen performance and how will that affect you going forward what you expected two thousand at twenty and I was obviously not very good last year you know kind of example could couple different things that you don't have to put a finger on it either earlier put a finger on it all with a fixed it we've been a better picture than I was last year but you know that year I learned a lot about you know moving forward to you know get older and and figure out what I have and don't have and what I can and can't do and you know you just learn front move on and and this year of your good everything's been going well mossy the program was great their own actually was good starting this year so and I'm just I'm looking forward to the twenty you're not only personally but for this team I think we I think we're a good place that's good to hear Jon Lester joining us waddling selfie on ESPN one thousand you just mentioned getting older I mean you're thirty secs so like you know the question comes up Hey what is Jon Lester have left in the tank what do you respond with I mean a lot I mean I like I said I I I feel good my programs my goodness this offseason you know I feel like I'm in a better place right now than I was you know this time last year as far as physically mechanically the way the ball kind of responding to what I'm trying to do on the mound right now so I mean I don't know if that translates into anything going forward you know I mean that's the whole point of the season and and working to get to that but you know right now feels good and awfully can continue to build off of what what we've been doing I DO channel we talked to you last year at spring training you tell those lucky you lead by example you you're not often around rock guy Kris Bryant this offseason has gone through a lot of trade rumors you dealt with that in Boston you did get traded will you give our have you given any advice to Chris Brian and how to deal with all this I think Chris is fine he's a Big Boy you know I mean he's I think the first time you your name your little surprise then you can ask questions but you know I think at the end of the day he's done a very good job of of separating the business aspect of this game and then the personal aspect that that we all really love to be a part of you know it sucks sometimes when you have that reality of this is actually a business and you know that the the cubs are trying to run the club the best way they can and if that was to involve him in a trade or any of us in a trade you know I I it's hard at first but it's you just kinda you kind of figure out as you go and I think you've done a good job answering questions about it I think he feels like he's in a good place he looks good you know it is internal surveys the looks like just normal Chris out there smiling and enjoying the game so I mean if you ever ask me for advice than that I'm there for but I think when somebody is dealing with it pretty well like years you know you don't wanna you don't want to beat a dead horse for for lack of a better a better term he had a couple of times during our talk right now about nineteen and I thought after that as a cubs fan after the nineteenth season that feel would really go to work are you surprised at the lack of change at all with person now now we got a good team I mean I don't I mean I think people just sometimes want change to change you know no real reason behind it is the fact that you just want something new we have a very good thing I mean we have three guys that are gonna be running all start every year should be current all stars every year now with that being said we we need we need those guys to be healthy you know I need Chris right to be healthy and the hobby to be healthy and it raised to be healthy and when they're able to stay in there like and and be healthy in that aspect of their games and you'll see the talent you'll see that the production come out you know you got you coming off of an injury year and then kind of trying to figure out himself again and I think he did that I'm excited for his for his twenty campaign to see what you can really do and and get after it get Kimbrough back into what he is you know it's a hard position we put him in last year to come in it's never really worked out I'm excited for him we got a good scene I mean I know we have some questions that all teams have questions you never have a full one hundred percent roster alike yeah this is the guy at every position but I love our god to love the way we compete I love I love our attitude will grab everybody seems a good place to get stuff done working hard John bigger picture what what bothers you most about this Astros cheating scandal I don't know man I'm kind of I don't know I I I I want to get back to talking.
