"Live from NPR news in Washington. I'm Dave Mattingly. President Biden is ordering employers with more than 100 workers to mandate Covid 19 vaccinations or have their employees undergo weekly testing. It's one of the measures announced by the president yesterday as part of his six point strategy to combat the virus amid the spread of the Delta variant, despite America having unprecedented and successful vaccination program Despite the fact that for almost five months, free vaccines have been available in 80,000 different locations. We still have nearly 80 million Americans. Will fail to get the shot. The Justice Department is suing the state of Texas over its new abortion law. That law bans abortions after roughly six weeks of pregnancy. At a news conference yesterday, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the federal lawsuit saying the DOJ believes the law is unconstitutional and infringes on the rights of women. Because the statute makes it too risky for an abortion clinic to stay open. Abortion providers have ceased providing services. This leaves women in Texas unable to exercise their constitutional rights. And unable to obtain judicial review at the very moment they need it. A spokeswoman for Texas governor Greg Abbott says the governor is confident the courts will uphold the law. This is NPR news. And it's w N Y. C at 5 30 to Friday, September 10th 66 clear this morning Sunny and 77 today. Good morning. I am Michael Hill. Mayor De Blasio says he doesn't intend to follow the lead of Los Angeles County where all public school students 12 to 17 years old must get covid 19 vaccinations Instead, De Blasio says his first priority is for kids to go back to school in person. There's a family that's not yet ready. I don't want that family kept out of school. I want them in school where we can help their kids, especially for the kids who have been out for the last year and a half. De Blasio says about two thirds of New York City kids who are eligible have gotten vaccinated, and many public schools will host vaccination sites when school starts up again next week. That's on Monday. About a quarter of New York City teachers have not been vaccinated against Covid 19 in person classes, as we said start on Monday for the one million city public school students, But school staff can wait until September 27 to take their first dose, and there's no deadline for them to become fully vaccinated. Dr. Simon Lee is a pediatric intensive care physician. At Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, He says he would not feel comfortable sending his kids to a classroom with an unvaccinated teacher. Yeah. If I knew that, Um the teacher was not vaccinated and had we had no good reason for that. Then my answer would be I would not be happy with the school system. Parents can ask teachers, but teachers do not have to disclose their vaccination status. Watchdog groups are calling for an investigation into whether former governor Andrew Cuomo used campaign funds to pay for his spokesperson. Which as a part of work for the governor between before Cuomo resigned last month, then as a partner began responding to press inquiries from Cuomo's campaign email account. Susan Lerner, head of common Cause, New York, filed a complaint with the State Board of Elections, arguing that paying a spokesperson with campaign funds violates election laws since Cuomo is not currently running for or holding elected office. How is former Governor Cuomo paying for his spokespersons? Salary? Um it appears that it may be coming out of campaign funds, and that is a violation of the black letter of the law. Neither the Cuomo campaign committee nor the Board of Elections responded to a request for comment. 66 clear this morning Sunny with a high near 77 slightly breezy out there clear with a low around 59 tonight. "They were right here. Jasmine Garza. NPR NEWS NEW YORK This is NPR news. When New York City's municipal employees go to work on Monday, they will either have to show proof of vaccination or submit to weekly covid testing, but just days away from that deadline, more than a third of the city workforce is still holding out on getting the shot. My colleagues, Elizabeth Kim and Rebecca Ibarra took a look at those numbers on today's episode of Consider This a news podcast from NPR and W N My see here they are. What's the latest vaccination rate among the city's work force? And how does that compare? To the overall population. So the city employs roughly 370,000 people. It's a number of that fluctuates depending on the season. But as of Tuesday, 65% of that workforce had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Now that's significantly lower than the general adult population in New York City, where 78% of people have gotten at least one shot. And which agencies are behind in getting the shot. The agency that came in last at 44% was the city's sanitation Department, which has about 10,000 employees. But there were several agencies that had vaccination rates of less than 60% of the Fire Department Emergency management services. Notably the NYPD, which has around 52,000 civilian and uniform staffers had an uptake of only 53%. Now these are first responders, which have routine contact with the public, so these numbers are somewhat troubling. Yeah, So Liz W. N Y. C. Spoke with Dr Simon Lee. He's a pediatric intensive care physician at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and he says he would not feel comfortable sending his kids to a classroom with an unvaccinated teacher. Yeah, if I knew that, um, the teacher was not vaccinated and had We had no good reason for that. Then my answer would be I would not be happy with the school system. So what are the possible consequences of this vaccine hesitancy among city workers? So based on what we've seen in case studies, um we know that cases can rise in workspaces that have unvaccinated people and not only just in workspaces, but the cases can. There can be cases with the people that those unvaccinated um workers come into contact with. We also know that the delta variant is much more contagious, and city health officials have said that the latest surge is really a pandemic of the unvaccinated. What is the mayor saying about these lagging numbers? I read off a list of some of these less than stellar vax rates to the mayor during a press conference, d E p. We see a 54% vaccination rate, and I asked him why he thought these agencies were having such a difficult time. Convincing their employees to get vaccinated. We're all dealing with The fact that unfortunately in a crisis in an era where we should be all pulling together, A lot of our employees are being treated to a lot of misinformation. I know that's a big part of the problem. Um, and our job is to keep working through that meticulously. And using a variety of tools to move people. I think you're going to see the incentives and the mandates having more and more impact. Meanwhile, Governor Kathy Huckle is mandating that all state healthcare workers get a covid vaccine. No exceptions. Is the city considering a similar mandate. So that state mandate, by the way applies to all city healthcare workers as well with respect to the rest of the municipal workforce. The mayor has said that all options are on the table. You have to think that by releasing these numbers, he's preparing to make the case that the city needs to go to a full mandate, so it'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming days. "I mean, win is a right mind will go to the police a fake ID. Suddenly, the search was on for people who'd spent most their lives trying not to be found. The victim's compensation fund, established shortly after 9 11 was available to anyone who applied regardless of immigration status, But proving that a person was at the site of the attacks became an odyssey. They have not pay stuffs. They have no income tax. They can not lease, Garcia says. Employers themselves didn't want to admit to hiring an undocumented worker. Tepeyac went so far as to search missing people's homes to see they have a passport certificate or to see they send money with some names. And it was really difficult because people were not using their real identities. The Polyak whittled its list of 700 or so missing people down to 67. 67 families whose main provider had disappeared in the attacks. Only about 12 of those families would come forward and be able to prove the existence of their loved one and get some aid. Some of the assistance came from churches, non profits and private donors at Greenfield Hill Congregational in Connecticut. Reverend Elite Award says she remembers waking up one morning in mid December, I walked into the church office, um There was an envelope in my mailbox and I opened it up in a check for a quarter million dollars fell out. And there was a note with it. That just said, Please use this to reach the people who aren't being reached and and that was all it said the church ended up creating grants for families. 1106 bodies have not been identified from 9 11. The Mexican consulate alone estimates that 16 nationals died that day. But Only five are acknowledged at the National September 11th Memorial. Garcia herself has lost contact with the families of the missing except for one person. Gino, the man who showed up at her office is on the morning of 9 11 looking like an apparition caked in white dust. You always call me on 9 11. Every every 9 11. She's expecting his call this Saturday and she knows what he'll say. Oh, my God, I'm so lucky to be alive. He's lucky to be alive, but he doesn't like to talk about how it happened. The invisible people. They both tried so hard to find. They swear they were real 20 years ago. They swear they were right here. "Luckily, these co infections tend to be rare, with one large study from Stanford showing about 5% of kids with Covid also having RSV The symptoms are very similar between RSV and Covid. So if your kid is coughing has fever or any other signs of a respiratory infection. Doctors recommend that they go get tested for Covid. Will also often run a test for other viruses at the same time. And some of the same things that fight covid like hand washing, social distancing and masks work against RSV two. Okay. Now, what about asthma does in person schooling present a legitimate concern for Children who have asthma. So, yes And no right now, the CDC says that moderate to severe asthma can make you more likely to develop severe covid. That's because some study shows slightly worse outcomes for asthmatics with lung damage or ones with non allergic asthma. But overall clear connection hasn't been made between having asthma in general, and the chances of catching SARS Kobe to the virus behind Covid. Another thing to clear up. Some patients have asked if inhalers with corticosteroids might increase the chances of covid. But Dr Harris says not to worry. This should not significantly decrease their immune system's response to SARS, Kobe two or any other virus. It really is a low level of steroid. That they use every day. And it's really meant to suppress their body's ability to cause worsening asthma that mucus production and inflammatory changes. It should not affect their ability to fight Sars-cov-2. He also says the best way to protect Children with asthma or any kid for that matter is to just go get vaccinated. Yes, we keep hearing that last year seek on the sign said the kids were at lower risk for severe covid than adults. But now We're hearing an alarmingly so about more and more pediatric hospitalizations. Does the delta bearing behave differently in kids relative to pass variants? So severe Covid has spiked this summer among kids alongside the Delta Variants surge. A couple of CDC studies published on September 3rd looked directly at this question. So they showed that weekly hospitalizations among Children and teens were five times higher in mid August than they had been at the end of June. Hospitalizations have also grown most among infants 0 to 4 years old since the rise of Delta, about about 10 fold. His 70 hospitalizations per 100,000 infants nationwide. Note in pediatric hospitalizations were also four times higher in states with lower vaccination rates. Right Vaccination really is the key, but it's unclear if these patterns are due to the delta variant or because of the reopening. What do you mean? Well. The delta variant began arising in the late spring in about a month or so later, right states began to reopen, so the jump in hospitalizations is likely due to the combination of people mingling more. And the Delta variant being able to spread faster. But I think the big takeaway is that what happened in the past school year might not be able to forecast events in the upcoming school year because in person learning was so restricted last year. You know, school staff can can wait until September 27 to take their first dose of covered vaccine because of that, some teachers may not be fully vaccine until the end of October. What's the danger there partially vaccinated or unvaccinated teacher? The danger is a higher likelihood of catching the delta variant for that unvaccinated person. So full vaccination still lowers the chances of infection by 70 to 80%. It's still lowers the chances of hospitalization by 90%. You know, an unvaccinated teacher in Northern California spread the delta variant to half of her elementary class 12 out of 24 kids. In the two rows closest to the teacher's desk had the most cases. I asked Dr Simon Lee, pediatric intensive care physician at Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School if he would feel comfortable sending his kids to a classroom with an unvaccinated teacher. Yeah. If I knew that, Um the teacher was not vaccinated and had we had no good reason for that. Then my answer would be I would not be happy with the school system. So right now, about three quarters, or 74% of New York City teachers have received at least one dose of covid vaccine as of this week, But that still leaves about a quarter of teachers unvaccinated. Just a few seconds left. Can parents ask a teacher about their vaccination status is that legal parents can directly ask teachers without violating privacy laws. But there's no requirement for the teachers to actually answer. And parents would be unlikely to get an answer from the school itself, as employers have to keep confidential all medical information about employees under the Americans With Disabilities Act. I've been speaking with W. N Y C Science and health editor seek Anak Pennsauken. Thank you..

We were able to hang out with the med students for about six weeks. We lived on campus in washington heights of really good experience. But i noticed that. When i was in the hospital and i was shadowing the doctors that i just didn't it wasn't there was something about being in the hospital that i just couldn't really stomach i didn't had I was. I was impacted by what i saw two impacted by seeing people who are sick people who may not be here at any moment for me. That was just a really emotional experience in. So I mean time I will be here. I know Ernie was just talking about. He said he was gonna be talking about the vaccine. The covert vaccine, and I was just discussing that this morning on the program that I do so let's continue that topic because I'm telling you, it is just getting weirder. And weirder out there. If you would like to join the conversation 800 to 889227 800 to 8 W B A P and your input is always necessary on this because They are pushing this vaccine like nobody's business. They're pushing the vaccine again and again is this is America For the most part? Last time I checked And I say, for the most part, it's not like the America I used to know, but it still has the same street signs and mostly the same freedoms. Esso, if you've chosen to get the vaccine, that's great, I you know, I've just I've been talked to question everything, and that's what I've been doing as of late, especially given Everything that we're now learning about the vaccine, the CDC, you may have seen this story. I think it just broke on local news yesterday they're investigating cases of heart inflammation in teens and young adults who have been getting the two shot covert vaccine. And again this is this is in teens. And young adults. They're looking into reports of heart conditions. Um, who've received again? This thing this is the modified are in a code vaccine. This is, according to a vaccine safety group with the CDC. This is May 17th meeting the group presented reports of the heart condition called my Oh, card itis. The CDC is advisory Committee on Immunization practices from safety data collected by the Department of Defense. I read that this 42 is like, Wait. What? Why is the wise the Department of defense collecting safety data Adi But, you know, I've also learned you let those something's go. And eventually the answer pops up, eh? So anyway, it's the Department of Defense, the vaccine adverse event reporting system and vaccine safety Data Lake. Remember these air all funded by Your tax dollars and mine as well. So the news This news in particular is just a few weeks after the FDA authorized the visor covert vaccine for minors, 12 and under And remember again I go back What to see here? This is May 2021. So why the year and a half ish? Not quite that you're in a year and change. And it was. Hey, we just have to, you know, slow the curve two weeks to slow the curve. Flatten the curve. Whatever the language was they used at that point, which has been lost to the Annals of history. S O is two weeks to the flat in the curve. Just keep us from collapsing the entire health care system. That's what they were saying. That has now turned into you know, a year to flatten the curve, and by the way, if you don't get the vaccine, you are in the president's words gonna pay for it. You gonna pay the price? That that was a little strange, But that's just me. Maybe I'm more of a conspiracy theorist and most so Madonna's vaccine currently is authorized for people 18 and older, of course safety group did not specify which vaccine was given in these cases. Huh? So you've got teens and young adults. Who've received the marina covered 19 vaccine. They are getting having his heart problems. And This is again just a few weeks after the FDA authorized the covert or the Pfizer Cove in 1944, minors, 12 and under So they're not even really saying which Which vaccine was given in these cases. Hmm. I wonder, so it's ah, They say that it's uh, This is Dr Lord's Kleinman. He's a professor and vice chair of the department of Pediatrics at Rutgers. Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. See Robert Wood, Johnson and I I I only know this because one time I used to listen to P B. Uh, PBS. Yeah. National NPR. Sorry. National Public radio quite a bit. Okay. I say. Keep your mind open due to all things. And I remember Robert Wood Johnson, of course, being a Big, big great giver to NPR for what it's worth. So, he says. It's the Lawrence climbing. This doctor says Terrific things are being transparent. It shows the surveillance systems are working. The problem is, where are we listening to them? Are we listening to any of these problems? What little is known. You know, at this point, they trying your at least attempting to share it with with us. The vaccines Vaccine safety group says the relatively few reports of my oh card itis appeared to be mild. Mild Now again. This is a vaccine for you know for for people, um, for a for a group of individuals, the Utes of America who don't seem to be All that affected by Covert, and I know the line has been As it was with masks your You know you're not wearing a mask to protect yourself. You're wearing it to protect People you love. But then we're told you I'll get the vaccine. Because it'll keep you from from spreading. The the Rhona is some people have referred to it. Torto to other folks. But even if you have the vaccine, you still have to wear that mask. So again. It's the conflicting. It's the you've got the conflicting advice from the government and that the CDC is well, you have these conditions like the heart conditions with the The younger of folks among us getting the vaccine. All of these. All of these issues. They're just adding up to me to be something that should be more question. More question that it is being.

"You know where Made to help to prevent serious disease and illness and and certainly death so and they've done a remarkable job of two now. And there's no reason like vaccines can't continue to help us protect ourselves against against infections in serious infections that can seriously affect normally our health. But look at our economy out livelihood and everything else that has gone along with this. Open 19 pandemic. Dr. Patricia Willie Williams, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, and associate dean of inclusion and diversity at Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr Whitley Williams. Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to run through that survey with us and offer up all that great insight. We appreciate it. My pleasure. Thank you. And remember, get vaccinated. Absolutely. And finally, I'm joined now by Margaret Laws, President and CEO of Hope, Lab and organization focused on the mental health and well being of youth and young adults. You can find out more at hope lab dot ord, Margaret Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to talk to us. And let's start with a little bit Maura on the work that you do at hope Lamp. Adult 12 1st of all, Thanks, Ryan for having me on really excited as this conversation today. So a little bit more about hope Lab. We're a social innovation lab founded and funded by the founders of eBay, and we worked to develop tech products that improve the health and well being of teens and young adults. We're a team of behavioral scientists, designers and tech product managers, and we work with young people at every stage of the process, from developing ideas to developing and testing interventions and in products. Partner with other health, education and social service organizations and companies to get these products out to young people on bright Now we're also just starting to do some investing in early stage companies. It worked on the mental health and well being of teens and young adults and on health for LGBT Q. Plus young people, So we're doing some exciting work and really excited to talk to you a little bit more about it today and tell us about the reasoning behind focusing on teens and young adults with this project. Absolutely So if you think about adolescence, if you think about the teen years and emerging adulthood You're such an important time from a developmental perspective. It's a really big time for identity formation for building the skills of social connection and resilience that were really buffered you throughout your life. It's also I think it really incredibly important to support the young people who are the creative engine and innovators for our future. So the work we do at hope lad brings together a deep understanding of the science of adolescent development and the creativity, passion and innovation of working directly with young people as co creators. Solution to improve their own health and well being. Obviously it hope lab you're working on creating technology that will be helpful for youth and young adults. But I gotta tell you, I see some of the technology out there, especially social media and platforms like that. And I wonder what it's doing to the well being of this generation. What have you seen? What science? What data is there when it comes? The relationship between some of the different types of technology that are most frequently used among young people and their well being. It's a great question and a complicated question. And as you pointed out, it's really a double edged sword. No on the one hand team. They're on Tak and in tech is here to stay. I don't think any of us thinks that it's going away. The most recent surveys show that more than 40% of teens say they're on Tech almost constantly in the data also show that they're spending upwards of seven hours of the day on tech even outside of their school. Yeah, a lot of hours and, you know, way. See both, um the challenges and the benefits of tech amplified during the pandemic. So one of the things I think it's important to note and we're noting in our work is that some groups of teens, including those who identify its LGBT Q, plus Used tech disproportionately to find the support and connections that are crucial to them. So you know I could rattle off statistics, you know, all day long, but you're nearly for intended. Teams being adults. Report symptoms of moderate disappear Severe depression and that's up substantially from a couple of years ago. Um, young people who are in that category are even more likely to use digital health health resource is so one of the things we found is that social media while we all we often think of it is sort of the cause of some of these things. They're also arrested and an important outlet and venue for people to get it, supporting advice to feel less alone to get inspiration from others and to express themselves creatively. Uh, also to stay informed and connected during the code 19 pandemic, particularly those whose families have been affected. So you know, we try to see our work and hope Lab has really harnessing the positive power of these tools to help young people connect, find support. Learned skills and develop resilience. But we're also really interested in ways that these tech platforms and tools can become more supportive and more pro social and so we're working in that space as well. I'm joined by Margaret Laws president and CEO of Hope, Lab and organization focused on the mental health and well being of youth and young adults. You can find out more at hope lab dot or just to follow up on technology and young people with one more question. We know that some of these social spaces online can be places that are a bit rough, where there's a lot of negativity and perhaps bullying things like that. What have you found in terms of the Pact of that kind of content on younger people and how they respond to all of that. Yeah, I think you know that those things are absolutely true, and we've been really interested in Trying to understand you know where people are finding those having those experiences and where people are actually finding positive experiences and social connection, And what I would say is, I kind of to reiterate the point I just made were really trying T work, both with young people toe understand deeply. Experiences they're having online and I just rattled off a few statistics about some of the places people are Actually people who are having more challenges with suicidality depression are finding Positive support online, but also to really think about how we can work with, um, to support young entrepreneurs developing new platforms. There's a lot of that really exciting work going on among young people. Developing positive social spaces were collaborating with a group called Head Stream that Scott a ninja baiter and accelerator and a lot of exciting work going on there, and also, you know, starting to talk with some of the bigger social media platforms about Well being in this topic of well being. And how do these social spaces where young people are congregating and are going toe find support? Attending to and thinking about how to build well being into their platforms instead of having the platforms be places where people go and have negative experiences or bullying. A lot of work to be done in that space, something that that heavily on our mind and on the mind of a number of other organizations we work with who are supporting young people. During this time. So what are some of the other areas that you intend to really focus in on here in 2021? Yeah. I mean, one of the things we're thinking about how the pandemic affected young people. Loneliness, anxiety suicide, al it E and other mental health issues and teams have been exacerbated by Cho The 19 So you know, we had almost 80% of Jen's easy Deuce reported being lonely in 2020. And 40% of LGBT Q. Plus young people report that they seriously considered attempting suicide is a really disturbing trends. So we've been doing deep work on social connection and loneliness through a something we developed called nod. And we're also and we have a project called Milk, named for Harvey Milk that is working on positive identity affirmation and positive social connection. Opportunities for LGBT C. Plus, can people We're also working on Vaping cessation. One of the things that happened during coded for many of the parents out there. Or young people out there are aware that there there's ah lot of a thing going on, and 45% of teams who bakes say they want to quit..

"And we have some great conversations lined up for you. In a moment. We're getting update on the pandemic, and we'll discuss the hesitancy among some Americans to get vaccinated. Then we'll check in with an organization focused on the mental health and well being of youth and young adults and find out how technology and the disruptions due to the pandemic have impacted those age groups. First to get things started. I'm joined by Dr Patricia Willie Williams, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and associate dean of inclusion and diversity. Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr Whitley Williams. Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to talk to us. We have a lot to discuss. But before we get into the pandemic itself and its impact on certain racial and ethnic communities across the country, can you give us an overview of what the National Foundation for infectious diseases does? Well, Certainly we are an organization. Um and I'm like others were not a provider organization, but we're an organization that provides education. And advocacy to the public and to health care professionals about infectious diseases. Um, and about vaccines and, of course, an immunization, So it's safe to say you've been busy over the course of the past year. Way have been and we really are trying very hard to get the word out and inform the public and and as well as in former health care providers, Um, because we're in the midst of a pandemic s so we certainly want to, um, make sure that people are educated, so they make it a well informed decisions and go out and get vaccinated for sure. It seems like the worst from the holiday surge is behind us, although the daily death toll is still extremely high. Where would you say we're at right now? And what concerns do you have moving forward? Well, certainly I think we are starting to see and some areas the numbers stop jumping up in terms of hospitalizations and admission, But, um, I There's still great concern. So we're over our, um, the followed from our holiday travel over Um, the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Um, but we just recently had a Super Bowl didn't way and I don't know if you were watching, but I saw many people with without mask and they were pre and I'm sure there were post parties and that that was held in the city of the team that won. So I think you know, talking about you sure on the news. On Dr Fauci talking about super spreaders, eh? So I'm very concerned about that. But, you know, we'll see what happens over the next 2 to 4 weeks. We may have another third. And what about these variants that everyone keeps hearing about what we know about them, and there's a few of them going around correct. Yes, there are. They have been discovered. They're very variance from South Africa from UK and actually from other countries. We've detected some of those variance in our own country. Um, our, um pharmaceutical companies, Scientists are beginning to test some of our vaccines against these variants as well. So I think the word is still out, Um, in terms of how well the vaccine center now. Either, um, approved under emergency youth on those vaccines that are about to be, um, to be evaluated to see if they're ready for emergency use. And there couple of vaccines and the pipeline is well, so the manufacturers are very much aware the experience and Um, are testing to see if the vaccines are how effective the vaccines are recon see experience and then it's also important to monitor for the experience as well. So that is ongoing, and I think the word is really still out. But what we know if we really need to continue to vaccinate Against covert 19 and against flu. Um, asses, we go forward that feeling way we're going to control this pandemic. I'm joined by Dr Patricia Whitley Williams, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and associate dean of inclusion and diversity at Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Let's get to a recent study that the N F i D conducted which included some concerning data what went into the study. And what were you hoping to learn? What we really were concerned about. Why, um There might be, um Presidency vaccine hesitancy and because we are an organization that provides education, um to the public into health care professionals, and we want the correct information to get out. Um, that was the Real reason for doing the surveys, would we? So that we would better understand the concerns about both coated 19 and flu vaccines? Um and particularly why, Um, there were helped disparity is very concerned about that. So wanted to find out a little bit more. About what were their concerns, Sister why people were hesitant to take the cove in 19 of vaccine. And then once we Perhaps might have received some information as a result of the survey. Maybe we can then move forward is to help us to address these concerns. So what were some of the top concerns that you heard from black Americans about vaccines? Sure. I think that in that way, this survey was very helpful. Um, something that you know I have a black American African American certainly was very disappointed to see but not surprised. So 30% of Black adults in the U. S. Do not plan to get a covert 19 vaccine an additional 20% or ensure, um and why, um Well, they were three main. I think concerns one is that the vaccine was developed to quickly. Um and it's interesting. I just came back from seeing patients this morning. And so a 19 year old African American young man and his mother on and after taking care of why he was there. I asked you going to be vaccinated, and one of the first things they said, is always developed too quickly. So that's a myth and tried to break that down. So the process that was used to develop these vaccines the scientists have been working on for the last 10 years. You know? How do you What a new platforms? How can we develop vaccines and a more, um, efficient way? So the messenger RNA vaccines, which fights him a journal examples off. Um, that process had been worked on for years. So when the virus was identified as to what was causing cope in 19, it was very, um not easy. But you one could understand how the technology was already there. So he is the virus. You know you have the technology to make the vaccine. So it was done. Uh, certainly in a more efficient playoff say, because the technology was sorry had already didn't developed. And secondly, there three phases that a biological or vaccine or medication goes through in terms of trying out that particular product right on the, um on the public volunteers informed consent, but in face three thousands of people in the U. Our vaccine or medication go through in terms of trying out that particular product right on the, um on the public volunteers informed consent, but in faith, three thousands of people in the U. And very effective on Bennett goes to Pharmaceutical makes an application to the Food and Drug Administration, The FDA and this an advisory committee of very diverse advisory committee that looks at the data and decides whether Bad vaccine should be recommended to the FDA director to be approved for emergencies, and that's exactly what happened on Ben from there. And then the third thing, of course, is always, um The second thing I'm sorry, is always so if I get the vaccine, you know, will be harmful. To me. It's going to hurt me in some way and based on the clinical trials and thousands of people that have gone before, um, you know that the data did not support that. It's not harmful. People are able to accept the vaccine and, you know, continued to function. So, um, it's certainly was not harmful in the third thing. Is that the that if I get the coded 19 vaccine, just like With the flu vaccine, people say always gave me the floor. Oh, it's going to give me coated 19 the covert 19 vaccines Do not give you covert 19 infection. The vaccine is made up of a type of a protein and that cannot give you the infection. So I think those three Miss. I'll say that a circulating and social media you know, it's not helping that those have missed that of circulating and they're not true. I think it is a combination of both things. One is, um There is mistrust because it's a you know, federally controlled, um, vaccine and the fact that the thinking is that it was developed to rapidly but the other piece is that black Americans, um For many years I have been concerned and very upset about the Tuskegee syphilis experiment. And even though eventually the Um, Public Health service did admit that this was a terrible error. It would never happen again. Um, I think black Americans still are very much aware and often times when there's a new vaccine or a new medication. Um, there are conspiracy theories that are floating around, saying, um, you know, this vaccine is going to be used in the black community and you know, going to make everybody Carol, or it's going to, um, you know, wipe out everybody and, you know, be very harmful to us. So those air really conspiracy theories that I think are in a minority of people but of the black community, But it's raises enough angst and suspicion that we have. You know if the people don't step forward and Um, you know when get vaccinated, so this is a great concern. I think it's something we have to really, really work on. You know, it's way we've got to stop these conspiracy theories because it's really hurting us black black Americans or 3 to 4 times at risk of becoming seriously ill. You know, from Kobe it ending up on breathing machines dying from coated. We know that we know this. That This proportion it? Um Um uh, that black Americans were disproportionately affected by covert 19 and flew also, although many people don't talk about that, Um and so we've got to get over that and understand that you know, these vaccines are safe and they are effective and you know what? I'm also a member of the National Medical Association, which is the provider Organization for African American positions. You know if the people don't step forward and Um, you know when get vaccinated, so this is a great concern. I think it's something we have to really, really work on. You know, it's we've got to stop these conspiracy theories because it's really hurting. Us black black Americans or 3 to 4 times at risk of becoming seriously ill. You know, from Kobe it ending up on breathing machines dying from coated. We know that we know this that disproportionate Um, Um uh, that black Americans were disproportionately affected by covert 19 and flew also, although many people don't talk about that, Um and so we've got to get over that and understand that you know, these vaccines are safe and they are effective and you know what? I'm also a member of the National Medical Association, which is the provider Organization for African American positions. And we even have a task force that met with the pharmaceutical companies because we wanted to tell our providers on membership who African American positions and nurses and other health care providers that it's important to tell your patients.

"All right, Doctor. We need jobs and medical Director La Familia Medical Center here in Santa Fe. She comes on every week. We talk about what we have learned in the last week about Cove it and what we have learned in last week. I'll just jump the gun here. Is that the numbers? The trends are really good. Yeah, No, absolutely. Dropping like a stone. All of our case counts and, uh, and our testing rates and all of that we're If you just come by the past two days in Santa Fe County, we'd be in the green because our case counts have to be a below 12, which they were 12 and nine the last two days. And our testing percentages. I don't know what they're testing percentages were the last two days, but they have been hovering right around 5%, so they have to be below five. For us to get in. Both of those numbers have to be Hello, five for testing below 12 for cases for us to be in green. If any one of them goes below them were in the yellow, so we'll see. Two week average that correct I believe that's what they do. So we probably won't be in either the yellow or green when they update the numbers tomorrow. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. And we might get below 5% for testing. I'm not sure what numbers they go by. But the ones I'm looking at, I don't know that we'll be in the green yet. Or the yellow Even tomorrow and the update the numbers, But for sure in two weeks, we should definitely be at least in the L. A start the green unless Unless this is the normal well. You know, I was reading something about the 1918 1919 flu had three peaks. And so far, we've been really marrying that mirroring that here in the third peak. It was in March. Of 1919 of the second year, so we'll see what happens. Um, you know, the thing that they did not have is a vaccine in 1918 and 1919. And that's the big game changer that we have. So we'll see what happens. Um We, um way we've got the vaccine on one hand, and on the other hand, we've got all these mutations. Some of which are concerning for possibly being able to evade the vaccines. So you know it's zits again. I've said this before. It's cliche, but it's true. It's kind of a race against time here. All right, So get vaccinated. Get registered. Get your vaccination when when you're called up, even if it's in the middle of the night because the refrigerator broke and they need they need to use it all. So you could get that called midnight race over and get your vaccination, so we don't waste any I guess that just happened up in Farmington. All right. So the theory yesterday that I heard Dr Johnson was that All of the people who were skeptical about wearing a mask who misbehaved, you know, really didn't take a seriously. They've already gotten sick. So now they're no longer being counted. And now it's more than people who were still out there who are getting tested who are serious about this have been wearing a mask. I'm not sure I understand the theory. But it is far as as you know, I don't think everyone who's not wearing a mask has gotten sick. So but enough Drive down, drive down the numbers. Maybe. I just think that you know again. It's It's sort of Ah, Herd immunity thing. It's the fact of lockdown. I mean, we have in a lot of places we do have. I mean, I think it's different in different places, you know? So, um, we have in some places like New Mexico. We've had more stricter closures. And I think we've seen cases go down more quickly in those cases. There are still some parts of the country where you know hospitals. We say they're not full. But if the hospital is 75% full, they're pretty full. We still have deaths in the country that are above 2000. I believe so. Per day. So that's a lot. You know That's that's a huge number, so I don't think I've seen along on social media. Oh, doesn't matter if you have long down there. If you don't have lockdown because cases they're coming down everywhere. Well, I think they're not coming down the same rate everywhere. I think the peaks were different in different places, so they may be coming down fast, but they're coming down from a higher rate in a lot of places. So they still have their still a lot of hospitals across the country that it's not 100% full are still full enough so that health care workers are just Very burned out and stressed, and we still have over 2000 deaths a day happening, so I'm not out of the woods. I'm not gonna visit Florida anytime soon. The stories we had up Florida, especially after the Super Bowl in Tampa. You know, you hear about that, you know, hear about the grocery stores that don't even care. They don't. They don't enforce mass for the employees or the people shopping in all this. I'm not going to go to Florida anytime sent All right. So what else of Ah What else have you been reading? You know, we did hear that the South Africa Variant apparently is defeating AstraZeneca, so they're no no longer Ah, even using that they kind of paused using effort. Zeneca on the in South Africa. One of the things concern you that could be lurking out there. Well, I think that's the biggest thing that AstraZeneca study was very small and it was on young people. So it was hard to say whether or not it really helps with severe disease because young people are less Prone to severe disease anyway, but it didn't seem to help with preventing mild or moderate disease symptomatic disease, So that's why they did that. The scariest thing that I'm hearing out there is some of these mutations. This This statistic is from a couple of weeks ago, but man Alice in Brazil, which has been kind of just hit really hard twice. Is one of the places where this Brazilian variant maybe even came from and is taking over. Before this variant took over. 75% of the people in analysis already had co vid. So they should have been it herd immunity. But the thing about this variant is it hits people. Even if they've already had it is it's people again, So I think that's a curious thing to me. Is that these mutations, um, can happen and take hold and can can give the virus the ability to evade Antibodies from a previous infection or evade the vaccine. And so you know, I know that there's talk and there's plans toe may be created another booster shot or different vaccine so that we can address it. Mutations, but You know, it would be really good. If instead of doing that we can prevent the virus from mutating any in the first place by just ratted, getting close to eradicating it by getting everybody vaccinated. I guess the doctor we need Johnson Medical Director Love Familia Medical Center. What are you hearing in terms of number of doses coming this direction? In the next week or so. Well, I think what I'm hearing is that you know, we got a little bit less this past week that you know, we're giving the end of this week. Then then.

"High Well, I don't know exactly what you are. But I can't say that I could find in the morning. Kind of. I spent some time in the morning. Scanning what we call the news, as in global news, especially looking at Open 19 prevention and trying to see how Italy how Sweden has great Britain. And as you can imagine, it is a brigand grab bag. I mean, look at Brazil. I mean, we could want in on and you do have to ask out of about 200 countries. They all are in totally different places, and some of them seem to have it together and some of them absolutely do not. I have a lot of confidence. In New Mexico and I'll tell you why I do. I think it is because we are small is because we know one another better, and I believe that we are good at mobilizing on a local level, and you know, we that's part of our job. We're doing that all the time. We're connecting people and I went with anything Medical Richard. I often go back to our 100% community guru in San Miguel County that probes to the medical director there. Of L Central clinics, and he he really has been in the forefront. He was at the forefront of getting testing sites up and running in northern New Mexico, and I know he's working really hard now to kind of get it all laid out and then to provide direction, so I I believe with more people like Matt. I think the state can pull it together and a year from now. Hopefully we're all celebrating. Celebrating and really healthy. That would be wonderful. All right. "Yeah. Live from NPR news. I'm Dwayne Brown in Washington, D. C up to 25,000 National Guard troops will be assisting with security at the inauguration of President elect Joe Biden next week. Between the viral pandemic and the security threat. D. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is urging folks not to come to the city. I want to reiterate my request to Americans to enjoy this 59th inauguration of the president of the United States and the vice president of the United States. I'm from home. Enjoy it virtually on January. 20th. The nation remains on high alert after the FBI warned armed extremist and supporters of Donald Trump or planning attacks in all 50 state capitals leading up to Wednesday's inauguration. Mayor Bowser says Washington will see a new normal for security even after Biden is sworn into office. Vice president. Pence has spoken with his soon to be successor, Kamila Harris, extending his congratulations. It comes less than a week before the inauguration as NPR's Tamara Keith tells us It was their first conversation. Since the election. This has been an entirely uncommon transition. But now more than two months since the election outcome was clear, Pence and Harris have finally spoken, sources familiar with the conversation confirmed they spoke Thursday afternoon. The same can't be said for President Trump and President elect Biden. Trump still hasn't conceded that he lost the election, and he has said he has no intention of attending Biden's inauguration. Ah, break with 150 years of precedent. For his part, Biden said after last week's violent insurrection at the capital. He didn't want trump there anyway. Pence, however, is planning to be there on the West front of the Capitol marking the transfer of power. Camera. Keith. NPR news stocks finished the week lower across the board on Wall Street. Today, the tech heavy NASDAQ dropped 114 points down 8/10 of a percent. This is NPR. And this is W in my seat in New York. I'm Shawn Carlson, New Jersey has administered more than 300,000 doses of the covert 19 vaccine. But a very small percentage has gone to the African American and Latino populations there. W My CI's carinae reports on Lee 4% of the doses have been administered to black people and 5% to Latinos. That's despite the fact that both groups make up about a third of New Jersey's population. Experts say the numbers aren't surprising, given the huge mistrust in the health care system among communities of color. The group's first eligible for the vaccine were those in the medical industry. Shauna Hudson from Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School says Just being in the setting doesn't mean that you actually have access to the conversations that would make you feel more comfortable about it about 38% of the state's health care workers or black or Latino, according to census numbers. Meanwhile, officials say they've canceled tens of thousands of covert vaccine appointments at state run sites across New York, a link that wasn't yet live was leaked, allowing people to secure appointments before it went out to the general public. Melissa Derosa, top aide to governor. Cuomo says the state is investigating if the site was hacked. We understand the frustration if somebody got the link, not knowing that there was devious intent behind how it got out, however. As the governor said, there's seven million people buying for 250,000 shots and the system to sign up has to be fair. So I'm 20,000 appointments were canceled at Stony Brook University Hospital due to the snafu. State officials didn't immediately say how many other appointments it had to cancel and clinics in Binghamton, Buffalo, Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Utica. Made of glass.
